My name is Nicole Barker, and I am the new marketing and communications coordinator for OQHA. I am very happy to be a part of the 48th annual All American Quarter Horse Congress. It will be my 2nd time at the Congress, and I can not wait to experience this side of the event. I have shown and ridden since I was 9 years old, so this truly is a dream job for me. I am hoping to continue showing out here with my horse in the Amatuer all-around events. If there is anything I can do for you or any questions I can answer please let me know.

As we head into the last few weeks before Congress, all of us at the Ohio Quarter Horse Association are hard at work finalizing the last minute details for the show. We have many exciting events planned for the 48th Annual All American Quarter Horse Congress. These events include, but are not limited to, the Weaver Leather Freestyle Reining, the PBR Bull Riding, the Mercuria/ NCHA World Series of Cutting, the Equine Chronicle Masters, a special apperance by Pat Parelli, NRHA Ride a Reiner as well as a number of lectures/demonstrations. I would like to welcome Shane Rux to the Congress team as our new horse show photographer. He joins us with over 20 years of experience and is a familiar face around the AQHA and APHA show arenas.

Vesicular Stomatitis
Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease that primarily affects horses and cattle and occasionally swine, sheep, goats, llamas, and alpacas. Humans can also become infected with the disease when handling affected animals, but this is a rare event. Vesicular stomatitis has been confi rmed only in the Western Hemisphere. It is known to be an endemic disease in the warmer regions of North, Central, and South America, but outbreaks of the disease in other temperate geographic parts of the hemisphere occur sporadically.
examination of the mouth initially reveals blanched and raised vesicles or blister-like lesions on the inner surfaces of the lips, gums, tongue, and/or dental pad. In addition, these blister-like lesions can form on the lips, nostrils, coronary band, prepuce, vulva, and teats. The blisters swell and break, which causes oral pain and discomfort and reluctance to eat or drink. Lameness and severe weight loss may follow. Body temperature may rise immediately before or at the same time lesions first appear.
In the past decade, the Southwestern and Western United States have experienced a number of vesicular stomatitis outbreaks. Outbreaks usually occur during the warmer months, often along waterways. In some years, only a few premises in a single State have been affected. However, in other years, multiple States and many premises have been involved.
In horses, vesicular lesions generally occur on the upper surface of the tongue, the lips, around nostrils, corners of the mouth, and gums. Lesions in horses may also be expressed as crusting scabs on the muzzle, lips, or ventral abdomen.
Since there could be a vesicular stomatitis outbreak in any given year, it is essential that veterinarians and livestock owners be on the alert for animals displaying clinical signs of the disease. For current information on vesicular stomatitis outbreaks or summaries of the most recent past outbreaks, please visit the APHIS Web site at www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/nahss/equine/vsv/. Economic Impacts While vesicular stomatitis does not generally cause animals to die, it can still cause economic losses to livestock producers. The disease is particularly signifi cant because its outward signs are similar to (although generally less severe than) those of foot-and-mouth disease, a foreign animal disease of cloven-hoofed animals that was eradicated from the United States in 1929. The clinical signs of vesicular stomatitis are also similar to those of swine vesicular disease, another foreign animal disease. The only way to tell these diseases apart is through laboratory tests. Vesicular stomatitis is recognized internationally as a reportable disease. This means that there are serious economic and regulatory repercussions associated with the diagnosis. When the disease is detected in the United States, some countries may take action to block international trade of U.S. animals and animal products. Interstate movement of animals is also impacted. Premises containing affected animals are quarantined until 21 days after the lesions in the last affected animals have healed. As a result, quarantine periods can be lengthy. Clinical Signs In affected livestock, the incubation period for vesicular stomatitis ranges from 2 to 8 days. Often, excessive salivation is the fi rst sign of the disease. Close
Disease Spread How vesicular stomatitis spreads is not fully known; insect vectors, mechanical transmission, and movement of animals are all factors. Once the disease is introduced into a herd, it may move from animal to animal by contact or exposure to saliva or fl uid from ruptured vesicles. Humans rarely contract vesicular stomatitis, but they can become infected. In people, the disease causes an acute infl uenza-like illness with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headache, and malaise. To avoid exposure to this disease, individuals should use personal protective measures when handling affected animals. Recommended Actions There is no specifi c treatment or cure for vesicular stomatitis. Good sanitation and quarantine practices on affected farms usually contain the infection. When a defi nite diagnosis is made on a farm, the following procedures are recommended: • Separate animals with lesions from healthy animals, preferably by stabling. Animals on pastures tend to be affected more frequently with this disease. • As a precautionary measure, do not move animals from premises affected by vesicular stomatitis until at least 21 days after lesions in the last affected animal have healed. • Implement on-farm insect control programs that include the elimination or reduction of insect breeding areas and the use of insecticide sprays or insecticide-treated eartags on animals. • Use personal protective measures when handling affected animals to avoid human exposure to this disease. Ohio Queen Update
Good Afternoon! Just wanted to send a little update to OQHA regarding my queen appearances over the past several weeks: July 26th- This was a very busy day! I went straight from passing out awards and working the hospitality tent at the Buckeye Classic to the Ohio Union in Columbus, OH. Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids was hosting their annual fashion show and I was honored to be invited to walk the runway with a hero (cancer survivor)! This was a very touching experience. I also welcomed guests at this event! I enjoyed getting to meet and talk to many of the children that have battled cancer, including Princess Maggie who walked the runway at Congress last year. I also had the opportunity to share information about OQHA to many people at this event! This event was sold out with about 1500-2000 in the audience! The Youth World was an incredible event. Not only did I pass out awards for a few days, I also had the opportunity to attend the youth fashion show. I took part in judging the jeans and boots the youth teams had designed, as well as reading letters to the audience that were written to Rein in Cancer. I also was honored to escort the Youth Advisor of the Year out to the arena to receive her award. August 9th- This was an incredible day and one that I will always remember. I was invited to attend an event at the Fieldstone Therapeutic Riding Center in Chagrin Falls, OH. This was a special event, in which about 20 kids who are battling cancer came to the farm to meet, groom, and interact with the horses for the day. It was so nice to meet all the children and families and to see the joy on their faces from the horses. I also made up gift bags for all the children, including information and activity sheets about the American Quarter Horse along with some candy, of course! I’ve attached some pictures from the various events! Best Wishes, Carly L. Kidner 2014 OQHA Queen

Professional Spotlight One of Ohio’s own joined the NSBA Quarter Million Dollar Club Even if you have only attended a handful of Quarter Horse Shows in Ohio, you have no doubt heard Dawn Baker’s name announced in a western pleasure or hunter under saddle class. On August 13th, Dawn Baker’s name was announced for a different reason. At The National Snaffle Bit Association’s awards ceremony the crowd applauded the name of the Quarter Million Dollar Club Inductee. Baker was in good company with other top female riders such as Trisha Yamber, Katy Jo Zuidema, and Tina Kaven. The Ohio native was raised in Sunbury, by parents Heidi and Duane Piper, owners and operators of Piper Performance Horses. Growing up on a training farm allowed Dawn the opportunity to begin riding at an early age. She is often said to have begun riding before she was out of diapers! As a youth, Dawn earned numerous awards including AQHA high points, All-Around Youth, Congress Championships, and AQHYA World Championships. However, Baker’s successes did not end with her youth career. She made a brief stop in the Amateur arena on horse, Hey Monn. Together, they won several futurities and were named World Champions in 2005. In 2006, Dawn decided to try her hand in the pro events and gave up her Amatuer card. Currently, Dawn and husband, Brian Baker, own and operate Baker Futurity Horses out of the same location as her parents and brother, Chad.

Youth Spotlight
For Madison Thiel of Dublin, OH involvement in the Quarter Horse industry is a family affair. The seventeen year old has two sisters, Charley, who shows both on the Quarter Horse circuit and for an NCAA Equestrian Team, and Mackenzie who has shown on the Quarter Horse circuit and in the Congress Queen’s Competition. Their mother, Cyndi, and father, Tiger, also attend Quarter Horse shows with the girls. Madison recently became an AQHYA World Champion in Showmanship. To win the world championship, Madison beat out 185 other exhibitors from around the globe. Madison describes her teammate Lazy Lopin Diva as “a great all around horse.” She is currently competing in showmanship, horsemanship, halter, western pleasure, and western riding with Diva. “We just really clicked,” Madison said of Diva, a descendant of famed Thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat. The relationship with her horse is what’s kept Madison riding for 10 years despite the time commitment.
“I just absolutely love the friendship I make with the horse and I love the responsibility,” she said. “I love the people I meet and I love horses.” With several shows to attend, including the upcoming All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus in October, Madison will start her senior year being home schooled, but plans to attend Coffman High School in the spring. After graduation, Madison hopes to continue riding like her sister Charley, who rides for the University of Georgia. “I want to ride for a team in college,” Madison said. “I want to get a scholarship to ride.” The high school senior is excited about her recent election as an AQHA National Director for Region 4. Madison reported “I am anxious to serve the AQHA Region and meet new people that show, ride and love quarter horses.”

This year the Buckeye Classic was back and better than ever! Competitors traveled from far and wide to attend this magnificent event; some even as far as New Brunswick, Ontario, and Australia. The exhibitors enjoyed perks such as the Equine Chronicle Hospitality Tent, the Tabbed Out by a Trainer Program, Team Tournament Challenge, New AQHA Exhibitor Awards, Random Acts of Kindness Awards, Special Leadline and Small Fry Awards, Class and High Points Awards, FREE Youth Entries (Little Buckeye weekend), and FREE Amateur Entries (The Buckeye Classic). Therefore, it is no surprise the ten day event wracked up more than 10,000 entries between The Little Buckeye and The Buckeye Classic. The Buckeye Classic was not the only one showing generosity to others. In true Buckeye Classic spirit the exhibitors and guests of the horse show opened their wallets to give back. On Tuesday, July 22 many took a break from the show to participate in the Buckeye Open Golf Outing where $5,000 was raised to support the OQHA Scholarship Fund. Later in the show, another $5,000 was raised at the Silent Auction/Buckeye Eating Contest to support the launch of Congress Cares.
The Buckeye Classic Wrap Up
In 2013, The Buckeye Classic was awarded as an AQHA Top Ten show, and is truly considered a show that caters to the exhibitor. If you ask the Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association who they are and what they stand for their answer will be, “[An association] that concentrates on the interests of adult horse enthusiasts who do not train or show horses professionally. Whether you are a less experienced Novice Amateur, a Veteran Amateur or a Select Amateur, OAQHA welcomes your interest and involvement. We were the first Amateur Association formed within the American Quarter Horse Association and are excited to continue “Leading The Way!”

It’s early May and the winter is over. Horses’ hair coats are silk and ready for the show pen. It’s so nice to be looking forward to the upcoming show season…but wait…what’s this? The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association is holding their National Championship show in Harrisburg, PA. Over 10,000 college students and over 400 teams start the year with a desire to make it to nationals. The equestrians of The Ohio State University Western Equestrian Team are no exception. What makes them different is they have done what no team has done in the history of the sport. In 2014, the team obtained their 10th national championship, which is a first for the 47 year old collegiate industry. Not to mention, 6 reserve national championships under their belt. Coaches Ollie and Debbie Griffith of Plain City, Ohio are particularly proud of the team’s accomplishments against such fierce competition from other students and equestrian schools throughout the United States. “It’s pretty cool that while our students come to be doctors, lawyers, and business people, we can excel in an area where people are going to school to learn to be trainers, farm managers, and the like.” The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association is a unique way for college students to continue in or be introduced to the “horse show world.” While many teams have National and World Champion riders, those riders only account for one division of the IHSA. At the other end is the beginning rider, who is not accomplished before coming to school. “We have students who have never ridden that are given the opportunity to learn and show within their ability level.” As Griffith puts it, “Anyone who has shown knows the expense and effort that goes into doing well. Not having to own a horse or saddle is a dream come true for many students and parents. IT IS AFFORDABLE for anyone to participate. How great is it for someone not to leave the horse industry while in school?” Ohio State began the year with 35 western students and ended with the Team National Championship.

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY SETS THE BAR FOR COLLEGIATE RIDING
“We knew we had the muscle to get the job done, but we have before and fallen short. There are many great teams to compete against.” Ollie said. The Ohio State Team at nationals consisted of Austin Griffith (Open Horsemanship, reining) Ciara Bartholomew (Advanced), Lidia Pedrozo (Novice), Michelle LeMaster (Intermediate) and Caitlyn Loeffler (beginner). In 2014 the team won their region and went on to the Semi Finals in Canyon, Texas. This is the “March Madness” of college equestrians. After qualifying at Semi’s they moved on to the national championship which was held in Harrisburg, Pa. That’s where they sealed the deal, but it wasn’t easy.”
Open rider Austin Griffith says, “There was a lot of pressure because it came down to the last class and we were down by one point. It was all or nothing. It meant a lot to me because it was this group’s last chance to achieve a national championship together and my last year on the team.” When asked what the team and winning the nationals meant to Michelle LeMaster, she said “I have never done anything as terrifying and fulfilling as IHSA Nationals. I am so blessed to have been part of such an inspiring and hardworking team.”
Beginning rider Caitlyn Loeffler thought it was a special experience because she would have never learned to ride, let alone show a horse without the equestrian team. Ollie elaborated, “Our Novice rider (Lidia Pedrozo) never owned a horse and now is preparing to show her newly acquired, AQHA reining horse at competitions in Ohio and nationwide.” The American Quarter Horse Association and the National Reining Horse Association are the two major western sponsors of the Intercollegiate National Horse Show. Lidia is a Junior and president of the Ohio State Equestrian Team. She plans on finding a way to stay involved in the horse industry her entire life. “You can bet I will either become a part of the Equine Industry or be successful enough that I can enjoy my new passion. Thanks to the Ohio State Team, I have found it” she said. Stallion Directory OQHA Trail Ride
We held our 4th Annual Trail Ride & Challenge at TriCounty Trail Association on June 20-22, 2014. It was a top 3 AQHA Trail Ride with over 200 participants and 145 riders from 8 states. We had to split it into 2 differenct groups to accomodate all our riders. We had a great turnout despite the rainy weather over the weekend. On Saturday we held our annual Trail Challenge, where you could test you and your horses abilities and go through our challenging trail course. We had 67 riders take part in this challenge and stuck it out despite the rain. Food was provided throughout the weekend with a fantastic beef brisket on Saturday night at the awards banquet. This was our largest Trail Challenge yet with $1,000 added to the prize money. We helped to raise over $1,600 for the Tri-Co County Trail Association to help improve and maintain the facility. So far this has helped to install dump stations for campers as well as improve the trails.
