I
by Tracy Bidwell
cannot believe that it is 2012 already! This past year certainly flew by for me. I am, however, enjoying the very mild winter we’ve had so far -- I’ve only had to wear my Carhartt’s out to the barn once or twice -- and it’s been fabulous to ride in just a light coat. I hope you are taking advantage of the weather as well, be it out in the barn, in the yard or at football games. OQHA is celebrating a fabulous winter, with several World and Reserve World Champions returning from the 2011 AQHA World Show in Oklahoma. The 2011 Congress is also a cause for celebration, as final numbers prove that it was the largest Congress ever, with nearly 18,000 entries. Don’t forget that our biggest celebration is yet to come -- the Annual Awards and Banquet will be held Saturday, February 4th at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Columbus. Dinner will be served at 5 pm, with awards, as well as auctions, to follow. We are very excited to congratulate all of our winners and celebrate their hard work from 2011. Voting is already underway for 2012 officers and directors, so don’t forget to cast your vote! Results from the election will be announced at the Annual Meeting, which takes place prior to the Annual Awards and Banquet on February 4th. The meeting will begin at the Ramada Plaza Hotel at noon (Youth and Amateur Annual Meetings will begin at 11:30) and as always, members and guests are welcome to join us. I look forward to seeing many of your there, and for those that I don’t, Happy New Year!

Forum OQHA, hank you for hosting the Congress Model Horse Show. I really enjoyed showing and shopping later. This is a great venue for promoting horses.
T
Ja Jorda Mr. Charlie Menker, s a 2011 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen candidate, I want to express my appreciation for the endless dedication you and the entire OQHA team provide to the advancement of the Quarter Horse industry. The Congress and its queen contest has inspired young women for decades and each year a new group of ladies gets the opportunity for a lifetime. Thank you for providing that to us.

Best, Alyssa Freeman Oak Park, Illinois OQHA, hank you for working with Hot 2 Trot in 2010 and now again in 2011. I am looking forward to another successful year in 2012.
T
Dear Mr. Menker, want to congratulate you, the Tri-Chairmen and especially Cam Foreman on the 2011 All American Quarter Horse Congress. This event could not have gone more smoothly and the Ohio Expositions Commissioners, my staff and I greatly appreciate the effort put forth by Cam Foreman and his staff as it related to the Congress. Cam was very professional and responsive to any issues my management staff encountered. As you know, many changes were made for the 2011 Congress and my staff and I were apprehensive as to certain aspects related to the Congress. This was particularly true in the dirt work, the areas and the work areas for the horses. Your new staff performed all this work to your standards. Once again, I want to congratulate you on a great 2011 Congress and we look forward to working with Cam, you and OQHA in the future.

God bless, Courtney Sturgill 2012 Congress Queen Dear Don Recchitui, y name is Cheyanne Izon, a member of the Alberta Youth Quarter Horse team from Alberta, Canada. I would like to thank you for making the 2011 National Youth Team Tournament happen. My favorite part of the NYATT competition was when I walked up the center of the Coliseum and got my NYATT buckle. The Montana Silversmiths buckle you gave us for participating in the team tournament was my first Montana Silversmiths buckle ever. I would like to thank you again for organizing such a large event with over 70 teams from all over North America. It is a good way to meet other youth and compete against an all aged group which raises the skill level and the fun.
Dear Mr. Charlie Menker, hank you for all you do for the Congress Queen Contest. Your words of encouragement were greatly appreciated. I enjoyed our talk at the cocktail dinner. The meals were delivious, the sashes were beautiful and the manner in which the contest was conducted was outstanding! I hope you have a blessed holiday season.

irst, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to 2012. I am proud to say that 2011 was a great year for the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and it’s members. Many brought home top honors from the AQHA World Show, AQHA Select World Show and AQHYA Youth World Show, as well as numerous Champions and Reserve honors at the largest shows of the season, including the All American Quarter Horse Congress. I would like to thank all of the OQHA officers, directors, Tri-Chairmen, staff and our executive vice president Cam Foreman for their hard work and dedication this past year. The 2011 All American Quarter Horse Congress was the largest to date, and without your support none of this would be possible. I would also like to thank all of those who supported Ohio throught the year by attending our shows and I want to personally invite you and all of your friends to the Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 4th at the Ramada Plaza Hotel at 4900 Sinclair Rd in Columbus. More information about the Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet can be found on pages 5 and 7 of this magazine. Also, elections are now in full swing and I would like to encourage each and every member to exercise their right to vote. Election results will be announced at the Annual Meeting in February.

The license is $50 for the open division and

$50 for amateur. Licenses can be purchased by calling AQHA’s customer service department or at an AQHA approved show. Forms for dinner reservations can be found on page XXof this magazine and are due no later than January 20th. The following is a complete listing, by class, of all 2011 OQHA Year-End Award Winners. Youth Headlines Be on the 2012 OQHYA Congress NYATT Team
A
ll OQHYA youth members are invited to compete for a spot on OQHA’s 2012 National Youth Activity Team Tournament team. In order to be eligible, youth must be a member of OQHYA and reside in Ohio, as well as attend at least two OQHYA board meetings between January 1st and July 1st. A youth’s 10 best shows during the qualifying period will count, provided that the youth placed in at least three shows and
accumulated a minimum of 10 points. The qualifying period for the NYATT team begins the Saturday of the SOQHA Winter Circuit in March and runs through July 31st. Members of the Congress NYATT team may only show in one event in the National Youth Activity Team Tournament. Events include Showmanship, Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining and Barrel Racing.
How to Qualify for the 2012 AQHYA World Show
Y
outh can qualify to represent Ohio at the 2012 AQHYA World Show two ways. The first is by earning enough AQHA points during the qualifying period to become nationally qualified. The national qualifying period began May 1, 2011 and runs through April 30, 2012. AQHA determines the number of points youth need to qualify nationally and they are listed on their website, www.aqha.com. Youth that wish to qualify nationally
and receive the stipend from OQHA must attend at least two OQHYA meetings between January 1, 2012 and July 1, 2012. The second way to qualify is in-state. Youth must be members of OQHYA, reside in Ohio and attend at least two meetings between January 1, 2012 and July 1, 2012. Youth must also place in a minimum of three shows, accumulating at least 10 points during the qualifying period. A youth’s 10 best shows during the qualifying period will count. The qualifying period begins on the Saturday of the SOQHA Winter Circuit in March and runs through May 31st. Youth that wish to qualify for a cattle event, working hunter, jumping, equitation over fences and other classes not usually offered at regular shows can declare their interest in competing at the AQHYA World Show. Letters of declaration must be sent on or before March 1st, 2012 and should be mailed through certified mail with return receipt to OQHA.

Amateur Update Amateurs Take Time to Help Toys For Tots
O
n Saturday December 10th, 2011, members of the Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association took time out during the busy holiday season to help the Marines with their annual Toys for Tots drive at Rickenbacker Air Base in Columbus. Toys for Tots was created in 1947 when a group of Marines recognized a need in this country to help the under-privileged children of America and found a way to fill that need. Thus, Toys for Tots was born and the Marine Corps has been working hard in every local community doing their best to help all those
less fortunate and in need to have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas. Every child deserves to open a present on Christmas morning and that’s where the Marine Corps comes in. Over the years having distributed over 416,000,000 toys and delivering the joy of Christmas and message of hope to more than 195,000,000 children across America. This year, Ohio Amateurs worked with Sgt Blackwell of the Central Ohio Lima Company 3rd Battalion 25th Marines to help organize and sort thousands of donated toys for children in Delaware, Franklin, Fairfield, Hocking, Licking, Madison, Perry, Pickaway and Union counties. All of the Amateur members who participated felt a great sense of satisfaction knowing that the spirit of Christmas would live on for children all around central Ohio. The Amateurs hope to represent the Ohio Quarter Horse Association with an even greater turnout in 2012.

Club Updates OMI Quarter Horse Association
Submitted by: Olga Kipp, OMIQHA Secretary he November meeting was held with eight members present. The year- end awards banquet was discussed and plans finalized. It will be Saturday January 21st at the Northridge Tennis Club: 900 Melrose Ave. in Findlay. The meeting will be at 4:30 pm, with the election of officers and the meal will follow at 6:00 pm. The awards, and the crowning of the queen, will be following dinner. There will be a buffet for $12.50 per person and there will be a cash bar. Ballots and dinner reservations were sent out in December. Lisa Busch volunteered to help Valerie Haydinger with the silent auction. Everyone who brings a silent auction donation will be in a special drawing for a free OMIQHA membership for 2012. Members are also encouraged to bring a gift for the 2012 queen to the banquet. Deb Herman reported there were no scholarship applications and there was no queen report. The 2012 showbill was gone over. There were a couple more Small Fry classes added. It was suggested to move Small Fry Western Pleasure back to back with Small Fry Western Horsemanship to help make it easier for the kids. We will again offer a free open Halter class with a paid entry to an amateur or youth Halter class. There will be no December meeting.

Club Updates Ohio Quarter Horse Racing Association Submitted by: Tamie Grandstaff, OQHRA Secretary
O presentation to follow.
hio Quarter Horse Racing Association wishes everyone a Happy New Year and many blessings for 2012! The 2011 Awards Banquet and Election of Officers will be held February, 18th, at Hoggy’s Barn & Grille In Gahanna, Ohio. The general membership meeting will be 4:00 pm with a buffet meal and award
Youth Report On Saturday October 29th the OQHRA hosted a Congress Youth Day at The Races at Beulah Park in Grove City. In Attendance were seven youth and two chaperones to learn some behind the scenes about what goes on at the races. The day started with a visit to the clocker, he clocks horses on a stopwatch to make sure they can run fast enough to race. This is called an official work out; all horses must have one before it can race. Next was a trip to the starting gates. The kids got to stand in the gates and we talked to the starter - he is the one that opens up the gates for the race. We learned how they train them to leave the gates so quickly and how to stand in the gates. 2011 Quarter Horse Congress - Youth Day at the Races! We then moved to the racing offices and took a tour of that. Pictured are Allaina, Hayden, Lindsey, Mariah, Maggie, We also went to the jockeys’ room and looked at silks, saddles Cheyenne and Victoria. and weights for jockeys, and other things. The group got to go to the announcers booth, watch them call a race, and see the photo finisher. It was a nice day at the track with the All American Quarter Horse Congress race finals going on. The kids all learned something - I think you can always learn something new, no matter how long you have been around horses. Beulah Park was wonderful to us and we hope to return there next year for a fun filled youth day!
