H
appy (belated) New Year! I hope everybody had a fun and safe holiday season. Earlier this year I made some resolutions, just like everybody else. At the top of my list were to stay organized, stop constantly “running late”, and get more involved. Let’s be honest, being organized and timely are nearly impossible in a horse person’s life. Our tack rooms are a jungle of extra reins, unmanageable polo wraps, and untamed bailing twine. Our friends know that dinner at 7:00 really means 7:20, and that we will most likely be covered in dirt and horse hair. It’s shedding season after all! We mean well, but our horses don’t care if we have schedule. They want, no they demand, to play hide-and-seek in the 40 acre field. And, once they’ve been found, it’s time to find the halter they managed to hide from you. Being organized and punctual is hard, but I’ve found that getting more involved is much easier (and more fun)! Show season is coming up, and kicking off the season is Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Association’s Madness in March in Wilmington March 27-30. Make sure to sign up for your Ohio membership so that all of your points will count for year-end awards. Read below if you are trying to qualify for the 2014 AQHA By Katie Dobrowolski Novice Championship Show. My favorite event, the Annual Trail Ride, is June 20-22. It’s a stress-free weekend full of good food, laughs, and plenty of fun. Our goal is to make it the biggest trail ride in the country, so be sure to join us out on the trails. The Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association is hosting an even bigger and better Buckeye Classic this year. After last year’s success, I can’t wait to see what they have planned for this year! Reservations are filling up fast, and you won’t want to miss the show that offers free entries to Youth and Amateurs. While I’m waiting for the fun to start, I might try to organize the tack room. The enormous mountain of saddle pads and winter blankets is a little intimidating, though. Wish me luck! If you don’t see me in Wilmington, just wait fifteen minutes. I promise I’m on my way!
OQHA Guidelines for In-State Qualifying to the 2014 AQHA Novice Championship Show
T
he 2014 Nutrena AQHA Novice Championship Show is September 30-October 5, 2014 in Murfeesboro, Tennessee. Novice Youth and Novice Amateur exhibitors can qualify Nationally or through In-State Qualifications. Guidelines for national qualifications can be found at www.AQHA.com/ Showing/Novice-Championships. In-State Qualifications are listed below. The qualifying period begins at the Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Association’s Madness in March Show in Wilmington, Ohio March 29-30, 2014. The qualifying period ends June 30, 2014. The last show is Ohio-Michigan-Indiana Quarter Horse Association’s horse show June 28-29, 2014 at the University of Findlay Western Campus. Only Ohio points-approved shows will count toward qualifying in-state. Please check each show bill for shows that are Ohio-approved. The guidelines will follow current Ohio Quarter Horse Association points, rules, and regulation as outlined in the current OQHA Official Handbook.
• All Novice Youth and Novice Amateur exhibitors must place at a minimum of 10 OQHA approved shows (show to 10 judges). • Exhibitors must be a member in good standing with AQHA and OQHA. • Points will be compiled on a one horse, one exhibitor basis. • Points will be awards on the basis of one point for each horse the exhibitor defeats, with a maximum of 30 points awarded for each class. • In the event of a tie, the exhibitor placing in the most shows during the stated qualifying period will break the tie. The next tie will be broken by the exhibitor having the most number of firsts. • Exhibitor must reside in Ohio. • OQHA will submit the top 3 point earning exhibitors in each of the qualifying novice classes to AQHA by August 1, 2014.

would like to congratulate all of our members and exhibitors on a successful 2014. Our Year-End Awards Banquet was incredibly fun this year. The weather held off, and we took Columbus by storm! We moved the banquet to a new venue. The Hilton Columbus Downtown, hosted our event and was very accommodating to our needs. The night was full of laughter, dancing, crazy pictures from the photo booth, and even a few tears as we honored our long-time friends the Augspurger family and the Wolfe family. Thank you to all who made this banquet a night that we will surely remember for a long time! Prior to the Awards Banquet, was our Annual Meeting. We had an overview of the entire year, and 2013 was our best year yet! What an exciting time to be part of Ohio Quarter Horse Assocation! I would like to congratulate all of the elected and appointed board members and officers. You will see a few familiar faces join the board for the first time this year. Kristine Nagy, George Seanor, and Beth Himes are new board members, but all have been involved with OQHA and the Congress for many years now. We also have a new queen representing Ohio. Congratulations, Miss Carly Kidner! As we move forward into 2014, we are excited by the prospect of having another By Chris Cecil Darnell banner year. We are introducing Southern Belle Breeders classes to the Madness in March show, and we hope to see the program grow even more. The Amateurs and Scholarship committee are planning the 2nd Annual Buckeye Classic Golf Outing, which benefits our members who are pursuing higher education. We even have a few surprises up our sleeve for the Congress! Thank you to all who made 2013 such a success, and I look forward to a great year in 2014!
Annual Trail Ride Planned for 2014
A
fter a successful trail ride in 2013, OQHA has teamed up with Tri-Co for another ride June 20-22, 2014. Last year the Annual Trail Ride was the second largest in the nation with over 130 riders, second only behind Indiana. However, OQHA sported the largest Trail Ride Challenge with over 50 entries. This year the goal is to have the largest trail ride in the nation. The 2014 trail ride will begin with a home cooked dinner on Friday evening, followed by a generous breakfast on Saturday morning. Lunch will either be out on the trail or at the camp, depending on which ride option is chosen. Riders have a choice of five-hour or two-hour guided ride on Saturday afternoon. Following the trail ride is the $1,000 Jim Wells Memorial Trail Challenge. This is not your typical trail class! In this judged and timed competition, riders maneuver through a series of obstacles. Riding under a tarp, dragging a shovel behind you, and jumping barrels are just some of the tasks that were seen in last year’s Trail Challenge. There are three levels of competition for youth and amateurs, and offers cash and prizes to winners. The night does not finish after the Trail Challenge. Dinner includes a bonfire, hay ride, silent auction and raffle, and entertainment. Sunday concludes the weekend with breakfast and lunch, plus a guided trail ride. The price for the entire weekend is only $60 per person, and $110 per couple. A free t-shirt is offered to all participants who register before June 10, 2014. A limited number of horses will be available to rent for the weekend, but must be prepaid by June 13, 2014. Tie-lines and

portable corrals are allowed for those who are bringing their own horses. Camping is primitive at Tri-County Trails, but full amenities are available at the nearby Bear Creek KOA. To register for the 2014 OQHA/Tri-County Trail ride, contact Cynthia Bauman, Tri-County Trails at 330-323-3559 or Todd Salome at 740-404-4308. Dear OQHA and Chris Darnell, Thank for your support of the 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen Contest. As the Indiana Quarter Horse Association Queen, it was an honor to compete in this year’s contest. I hope to make OQHA proud at the 2014 Congress! Thank you again for providing me with the opportunity of a lifetime.
Dear OQHA and Ms. Chris Darnell, I have attended every Congress since I was three months old, early on as a spectator and later as a small fry, youth, and now as an amateur exhibitor. This year I was fortunate enough to experience the Congress as a queen contestant. Experiencing the Congress from a variety of perspectives has allowed me to see all that goes into the Congress. I want to sincerely thank you for all your hard work and dedication in making the Congress a success year after year for exhibitors and spectators alike. Your royal treatment and hospitality for all the Congress Queen contestants is greatly appreciated. Thank you for the beautiful sash, hair product, and delicious dinner provided to all the queen contestants and for the most generous runner up gift. From presenting the Congress Bronze to talented exhibitors to receiving my own and every exciting moment in between, it was definitely an unforgettable week! Your committment to the Congress is forever appreciated! Most Sincerely, Carly L. Kidner 2013 First Runner Up Congress Queen

Ohio’s Own Dawn Baker Joins An Elite Club
awn Baker has been riding since she was in diapers, so it’s no surprise that this year she joined the National Snaffle Bit Association’s $250,000 Club. The NSBA formed the Quarter Million Dollar Club in 2011. Riders (open and non-pro) are inducted once they record earnings totaling $250,000. All NSBA earnings count in a rider’s earning figures from 1984 to the present. She has earned $73, 457.60 in Western Pleasure and $196, 712.17 in Hunter Under Saddle classes. She joins other Ohioans Ty Hornick, Randy Wilson and Kenny Lakins Jr. Dawn had an illustrious youth career. She earned several AQHA High Point Awards, AQHYA World Chmapionships and Congress Championships. She even won the coveted AQHA All-Around Youth Award. She rode such horses as Only Worthy, Im Tuff By Choice and Sonnys Sweet Jazz. As an amateur, she started showing futurity horses, and won a World Championship in 2005 with Hey Monn. Dawn gave up her amateur card in 2006, and has not looked back. The decision has paid off in dividends. The same year she gave up her amateur card, she won at the All American Quarter Horse Congress on Decorated By Mito owned by LT and Joanne Taylor. The combination won in both the Open and Limited Congress Hunter Under Saddle Futurity. Four years later, Dawn and the Taylors teamed up again. She rode BMQ Without A Doubt to a win in the Congress ThreeYear-Old Hunter Under Saddle Futurity and in the Southern Belle Breeders Division. That same year, Dawn also won the prestigious Equine Chronicle Congress Masters Two-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle with BMQ The Jig Is Up, which added $50,000 to her earnings. The winning combination followed up their Masters win with taking home a champion title at the Paint World Show.
In 2012, Dawn made another splash at the Congress, this time with Heza Ivy Invitation. The two-year-old was originally purchased as a Western Pleasure prospect, but was so versatile it was decided to show him in both Hunter Under Saddle and Western Pleasure. The 2010 bay stallion by Invitation Only showed in the NSBA TwoYear-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle Stakes with Dawn and in the Coughlin NSBA Two-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure Futurity with Dawn’s husband, Brian Baker. They made it back to the finals in each class. The finals for each class were not only the same day, but they were only separated by one classes. They managed to turn “Lee” from a Hunter Under Saddle horse to a Western Pleasure contender within minutes. The young horse had little problems making the transition, Dawn placed 4th in the Finals and Brian placed 13th in their respective classes. Dawn and Brian reside in Sunbury, Ohio and own and operate Baker Futurity Horses. They specialize in futurity and maturity horses. Brian is not far behind Dawn, having earned nearly $230,000. If their winning tradition continues, he will be inducted in 2014, as well. With the Bakers, horses and training are family affairs. They share their facilities with Dawn’s parents, Duane and Heidi Piper, and Dawn’s brother Chad Piper, who run Piper Performance Horses as a family. Dawn credits her success to the support of her family and husband, friends, and loyal clients. Join us in congratulating Dawn Baker on a tremendous accomplishment, and a milestone in a career of many more achievements to come.

They held the shows for over 36 years. “Sid Griffith was the one who talked us into holding Quarter Horse shows,” says Sherry. “Jess Cecil, Shirley DeLorean and Burgess Holt really helped us with getting information on starting AQHA shows.” The show facility had 300 stalls, two indoor arenas, and one outdoor arena to accomodate the large amount of exhibitors. Despite the shows being large, the Augspurgers made everybody feel welcome and like a part of the family. “We had a pool table in the back, and everybody would just gather there at the beginning of the day,” Sherry reminisced. Rolling Acres held approximately 15 days of shows per year. Their summer circuit was five days long, and drew in people from all over the country. Classes were large, and most youth classes had between 30 and 40 exhibitors. They were held before there were split combined shows, and lasted all day. “The shows started at 8:00 am and would last until about 3 or 3:30 am. We had just enough time to get breakfast, wash our faces, and start over,” said Sherry. Sherry and Rollie tried to keep everything fun and fair for exhibitors. Their circuit awards were unique, one year they gave oak furniture, including trunks and mirrors, to the youth classes. They had one of the largest team tournaments, but the teams were drawn from a hat to keep things even and interesting. Stall assignments were on a first come, first served basis. “We didn’t play any favorites, and people loved that,” Sherry said. Rollie and Sherry’s daughter, Mary Blackstone, grew up showing Quarter Horses at Rolling Acres. Eventually, she and her husband joined the family business and began to manage shows with her parents. Once she joined, they started doing split combined shows. They sold the show facilities in Delaware, Ohio in 2007 but continued to manage shows. In 2013, the Augspurger family decided to retire completely. “We are enjoying our winter days in Florida, and we love that,” laughed Sherry. “We loved having our shows, though. They were some of the best weekends of our lives.” However, their horse show legacy will continue to live on. Their shows have been divided between organizations and clubs, so that exhibitors can keep enjoying the shows. Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Association took over two shows, including the Memorial Day Weekend show. NOQHA will donate a $1,000 sponsorship from a pool of applicants in the Augspurger Name. They will also be adding another judge to the NOQHA Futurity Show for 2014. Fulton County Saddle Club will also run two shows in Wauseon, Ohio. Previously, they had four years of

introductory shows, and this gave them the opportunity have a regular show. Ohio-Michigan-Indiana Quarter Horse Association will run one show in late June. They have even added another judge to the show. Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association took over two shows, which they combined with their single date show and renamed it the Little Buckeye. This took over the vacated dates from the Regional show. The Amateur Association will also be making a donation in the name of the Augspurger family. Eastern Ohio Quarter Horse Association has taken over four shows from the Augspurgers. They are hosting a show in April in 2014, which due facilities being unavailabe, was not held in 2013. At the Year-End Banquet, Rollie, Sherry, and Mary were honored and given the Lifetime Achievement award for all of their years of service and dedication. OQHA President Chris Darnell presented them with a plaque during the banquet, and the Augspurger family received a standing ovation. Their commitment to the industry has made them irreplacable in the Quarter Horse community. OQHA would like to thank them for all that they have done and wish them a happy retirement.
OQHA Celebrates 2013 as Best Year Ever
F
ebruary 1, 2014 was Ohio Quarter Horse Association’s Annual Meeting. Events from the past year were recapped, new business was discussed, and the new directors and officers were announced. As the meeting went on, it was revealed that this was the best year OQHA has ever had. The OQHA/Tri-Co Annual Trail Ride was the largest trail ride in OQHA history. Nearly 150 people participated, and 119 riders went out on the trails. It was the second largest trail ride in the nation. The Jim Wells Memorial Trail Challenge was the largest in the nation with 38 participants. Todd Salome, Lisa Alley, Rod Atherton, Ron McCarty and Binnie Ann Masters all volunteered their time that weekend to make the trail ride go off without a hitch. The 2nd Annual “Test Ride A Horse” Clinic was another hit in 2013. Roger Landis, Cindy Morehead, Kim Cole, Clark Bradley, Steve Brown, Bill and Sherry Napier, and University of Findlay students all volunteered their time to make the clinic run smoothly. The premise of the clinic is to let youth ride finished show horses, so that they can learn what they like about each discipline. Horses for this event specialized in Western Pleasure, Showmanship, Horsemanship and Reining. The clinic had 50 participants. Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association had a charttopping year with their wildly successful Buckeye Classic, which included the Little Buckeye, Buckeye Open Golf Outing, and the Buckeye Classic. Their show made the AQHA Top 10 Horse Show List, and they are nominated for the Affiliate of the Year award. The innovative show featured free youth and amateur entries and the newly started Tabbed Out By Trainers. Tabbed Out By Trainers gave random novice exhibitors the chance to leave the show with their bill paid for. The First Annual Buckeye Open Golf Outing was hosted by the Amateurs, the Youth, and the Scholarship Committee. Elizabeth Gorski and Kelli Diaz were essential in organizing the event. They reached out to the community for hole sponsorships, and had 14 teams play in the tournament. It raised $3,700, which directly benefited the OQHA Scholarship Fund. Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association were wellrepresented on the national level. Lindsay Brush and Lauren Diaz were both elected to be Region 4 Directors. OQHYA had 33 exhibitors place in the Top 15 at the AQHYA World Show. They also won 6 World Champion and 6 World Champion titles at the World Show. Ellexxah Maxwell won the AQHA Youth All-Around for 2013, and 17 other youth exhibitors were on AQHYA Honor Roll. The 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress had the largest amount of entries ever, they totaled over 20,000. Part of the success came from the drive of the directors. Their goal was to lay a foundation that would benefit the Congress for years to come. Dr. Scott Myers opened with a quote, “If in everything we do, we focus on quality, continually raising the bar, success will follow.”
The Congress added new classes to bring in more exhibtors. Small Fry Showmanship gave youth exhibitors another chance to win, and Ranch Horse Pleasure gave exhibitors a new class to try their hand in. The Congress Breeder’s Challenge Futurity brought in 56 weanlings from the 39 enrolled stallions. The purse was $60,000. Also added to the show was the Congress Super Sort. The alliance with Ranch Sorting National Championships allowed for the Congress to expand to more working cow events. It was held at a satellite facility in Jackson, Ohio to embrace the popular discipline, despite having no room at the Ohio Expo Center. This year was the 2nd Annual Congress Parade through downtown Columbus. It was three-times the size of the parade in 2012. Mayor Michael Coleman, Executive Director of Experience Columbus Brian Ross, and other elected officials rode through Columbus on Quarter Horses, leading them to a press conference at City Hall. Later that week, the Professional Bull Riders-Touring Pro returned to its former home in the Coliseum. Due to online ticket sales, the event was able to be more accessible to out-oftown visitors. The Board would like to thank Shawn, Eileen and Denny Thorsell, and Buckin Ohio for providing event management. They would also like to thank Chuck Smith for his participation in making the bull ride happen, and Tom Coughlin for sponsoring it. History was made during the 2013 Weaver Leather Congress Freestyle Reining. Stacy Westfall started off the night with a demonstration on basic reining practices and knowledge. Following the first half of the riders, Shawn and Sam Flarida did a special half-time performance. Accompanied by the vocals of Denny Strickland, they brought the audience to their feet as Sam shadowed Shawn’s every move to the song “I’ve Been Watching You.” The video instantly went viral and has over 50,000 unique hits. The events and horse show were part of making 2013 such a big year at the Congress. Technology played a role, as well. New software was designed for live scoring in classes, and new hardware was used at the gates for exhibitor check-in. Television monitors were outside of the arenas allowing exhibitors to stay informed while waiting for their classes. OQHA partnered with iEquine for a live stream of all classes, so friends and family could watch from afar. Looking back, 2013 was a great year for Ohio Quarter Horse Association. Many personal records were broken, and new ideas flourished, proving that OQHA and Congress are “Still The One.” Ohio Quarter Horse News • 11

Ellexxah Maxwell Wins Champion All-Around Honors for 2013 AQHA Season
E
llexxah Ireland Maxwell took home the AQHA Youth Champion All-Around honors for the 2013 show season. Ellexxah and her horse Zips Bossy Chip, a 2008 bay mare, earned 735 points, winning by nearly 300 points. They also won the Youth Showmanship, Performance Mares and Equitation. Ellexxah and “Annie B” have been partners for two years, and have collected many titles during that time, including Top 5 at AQHYA World Show, All American Quarter Horse Congress Champion Youth All-Around 12-14, Congress Reserve Youth All-Around All Ages, Ohio Quarter Horse Association 2013 Champion Youth 12-14 All-Around and OQHA 2012 Champion Youth 13 & Under All-Around. They have earned every Superior, AQHA Championship and Performance Championship in only two years. The Maxwells purchased Annie B in 2011 just before the Congress as a green three-year-old. Ellexxah had an immediate bond with the young mare, and was the first person to take her in the show pen. At their first show they won 2nd and 3rd, and went on to place Top 5 in NSBA Youth Hunter Under Saddle 11 & Under at the Congress that year. In 2012, Ellexxah and Annie B’s first full season together, they won High Point Performance Halter Mares, High Point Equitation, and Reserve High Point All-Around in AQHA. It’s no surprise that they have found so much success, at just thirteen Ellexxah has over a decade of show experience. She has been showing since she was eighteen months old, starting in leadline. To date, she is the youngest two-time Congress Champion. When she was just six-years-old in 2007, Ellexxah won 13 and Under Novice Showmanship and Small Fry Horsemanship. This year, she was Champion in NSBA NYATT Showmanship and AQHA and NSBA Youth Horsemanship 12-14. She was Reserve Champion in AQHA and NSBA Youth
Showmanship 12-14 and in NSBA Youth Equitation 12-14. She was Top 5 in three other classes, too. Ellexxah takes after her parents Melissa Miller and Brent Maxwell. Melissa and Ellexxah are both Showmanship Champions. Melissa won AQHA High Point Amateur Showmanship in 1994. Brent is a current OQHA Director and is also an AQHA judge. This year, Ellexxah was also elected to her fourth director term for OQHYA. As a family, they have found success in the show pen, and are very active in the horse community. When she’s not competing, Ellexxah attends Ohio Connections Academy and enjoys martial arts (she currently holds a black belt) and singing. Below: Ellexxah Maxwell and Zips Bossy Chip won Champion Youth All-Around 12-14 and Reserve Youth All-Around All Ages at the 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress. Amateur Update
Ohio Amateurs Keep Philanthropy At the Heart Of It All
A
t the 2013 AQHA Annual Convention, the Ohio Amateurs were approached by Ohio Quarter Horse Association President Chris Darnell and Executive Director Dr. Scott Myers. To fill the gap left by the Region 4 Championship Show, they wanted the Amateurs to host a show in conjunction with the Buckeye Classic. Amateur President Marla Atherton, 1st Vice President Justin Billings, Treasurer Chris Martin, and Director Kristin Martin could not believe it. They already had such big plans for the Buckeye Classic, adding another weekend to the show would have been nearly impossible. After a persuasive conversation, the Amateurs agreed to host a show, which they called the Little Buckeye. “We went into the meeting with Chris and Scott, and planned on telling them we couldn’t make the Little Buckeye work, but we ended up folding like a two dollar lawn chair. Luckily, it turned out to be a great decision that complimented the Buckeye Classic very well,” said Justin. Just a year earlier, Justin Billings was at the Ohio Amateur show leaning on the fence talking with Dean and Karol Lee from Buckeye Western Horse Association. As they were chatting, they began discussing the challenges of the Buckeye Classic. Dean and Karol had the show experience from years of hosting for BWHA. The Amateurs and Buckeye Western decided to team up and combine their strengths. “They had the experience, and we had the energy and enthusiasm. We were a perfect match,” said Justin. The Amateurs agreed that the majority of their officers and directors would leave their horses at home, and run the show sans paid manager. They worked 8:00 am until 10:00 pm for the six show days. “This show was already our baby, so we wanted to do something more. We wanted to put a personal touch on the whole experience in hopes that people would have a great time,” Justin said.

While they worked during the week checking people in, unloading shavings, and setting up the vendor tents, they took a break on Monday for the Buckeye Open Golf Outing. Despite the pouring rain, the golf outing was a sucess. Justin said, “the golf outing was a fun way to give back to the Youth Association. It raised $3,500, and it went directly into the youth scholarship fund. The Youth advisors and directors, Amateurs, and especially Elizabeth Gorski really banded together to make it work.” The Buckeye Open Golf Outing was not the only way that the Amateurs were planning on giving back. Their brainchildren were “Free Entries” and the innovative Tabbed Out By Trainers program. They had a grassroots movement to involve the average Quarter Horse owner, something AQHA has campaigned for the past several years. The logic behind free entries was that everybody loves something for free, and having a show with free entries was unheard of. For a new exhibitor, the largest barrier of showing is the cost, especially when day fees, drug fees, office fees, and fees for six judges get added together. Not to mention hauling to the show, stall rentals, and sleeping arrangements.

The Little Buckeye gave free entries to all youth classes, and the Buckeye Classic did the same for all amateur classes. They had approximately 10,000 entries. In total, $50,682 was given out in free entries. Since the show was such a success and so well received, the Buckeye Classic made the AQHA Top 10 Shows list. It was the second largest show in Ohio in 2013, only placing behind the Congress. Not only were entries free, but a few lucky novice exhibitors at the Little Buckeye had a chance to leave without a tab, courtesy of the Tabbed Out By Trainers. Trainers donated $150 and helped 16 random exhibitors leave without a tab. The Amateurs are quick to thank their sponsors, too. “Our Free Entry Program would simply not be possible without the generosity of our corporate partners. Their kindness allowed us to make showing more affordable for the average person and it encouraged many exhibitors to try their first AQHA show. Our goal was to give new attendees a taste of the AQHA, in hopes they will return for the full experience. Our
2013 day sponsors included The Martz Family, Olivia Hoecker of Pine Meadow Quarter Horses, Tom Coughlin of Coughlin Automotive, Fritz and Carole Leeman of Leeman Farm and Rebecca Bailey with One Hot Krymsun,” said Justin. Due to the success of the Buckeye Classic, the Ohio Amateurs have been able to give back more to the community. In just 2011, their community service budget was $300 a year. In 2013, they gave over $5,000 to their charities, New Vocations Horse Rescue, Toys For Tots, and Flying Horse Farms. They also added a partnership with St. Jude Research Hospital due to their famous Pancake Breakfast at the Congress. At the Year-End Banquet, the Amateurs had their First Annual Buckeye Eating Contest, where proceeds went to the Stephanie Spielman Fund in honor of Kevin Shively’s late wife. The group is not content to just write a check, they actually donate their time, too. “We wanted to get more involved, and not just hand over a check. We have people on our board that really love the volunteering aspect. It’s their favorite part,” said Justin.

The Amateurs have truly had a banner year in the eyes of their peers and the Ohio Quarter Horse Association Board of Directors. President Chris Darnell even nominated them for the Affiliate of the Year Award. Their creative new ideas brought in new exhibitors, and their enthusiasm made everybody leave looking forward to the next year. Marla and Justin will travel to New Orleans for the 2014 Annual Convention in March to represent the Amateurs, in hopes to receive the award. As for 2014, the Amateurs are optimistic about the Buckeye Classic. Online reservations for the horse show have been open since February 1, over half of the stalls have been sold. This year, the Tabbed Out By Trainers will be at both the Little Buckeye and the Buckeye Classic, giving even more people a chance to walk away without a tab. The Amateurs are also giving Amateur Director Maureen Persinger, OQHA President Chris Darnell, and Amateur out random prizes to first time exhibitors to encourage more Director Fred Borer served panackes at the Congress to benefit the St. Jude Research Hospital. participation in the future. “The success we have justifies all of the work we do,” said Justin, “the more we get, the more we give In the fall of 2013, the Amateurs attended the New Vocations back.” Horse Rescue “Pre-Jug Gala.” The gala was a fundraising event The Buckeye Classic is July 19-27, 2014 at Eden Park to benefit the adoption program. Amateur attendees also bid on other auction items. Their contribution to the gala totals over $1,000. Just a week later, the Amateurs took a trip up to Flying Horse Farms in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. They spent the entire day at the farm participating in the Camp Creators program. Preparing and cleaning cabins were a big part in helping get the camp ready for the children. During Christmas, the Amateurs volunteered with the Marine Corps at Toys For Tots. They spent all day in the warehouse and sorted a full semi-truck full of toys. Toys For Tots benefits nine counties in central Ohio. After sorting toys, the Amateurs presented a check for $1,500 to Toys For Tots.

ordan Ferguson, of Tipp City, OH and Baileys N Chocolate are no strangers to success, and have many accolades to prove that. They have won four Ohio Quarter Horse Association yearend High Point awards, numerous All American Quarter Horse Congress Top 10s, and qualified for the American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Show three times. This year they added a Reserve Congress Champion title. They bested 118 other competitors in Amateur Showmanship. Jordan and Baileys N Chocolate, whom she lovingly calls “Bill”, have been partners for eight years. Through their years of hard work, they have become a winning combination. As a youth team, they were the year-end All-Around Champions twice, and were Reserve Champions once. Jordan and Bill are currently in their third year of showing in the Amateur division, and won their second straight Amateur of the Year award in 2013. The Congress is Jordan’s favorite show, and holds a special place in her heart. Bill was bought from the Congress Super Sale. “I didn’t even know we were buying him until we started bidding on him,” said Jordan. “I just thought we were going to look, because nobody was sure if he would turn out to be a good horse.” To this day, the Congress is still her favorite horse 32 • Ohio Quarter Horse News
show to attend, and adding a Reserve Champion this year just sweetened it even more. “My favorite class is probably Showmanship or Equitation.” Which is evident by their Superior in Amateur Showmanship. When asked about Bill’s favorite class, Jordan laughed and said “Halter, because he just stands there and I give him treats after for just putting his ears up... Seriously.” Majoring in Business Administration, Jordan is a junior at Otterbein University in Columbus, Ohio. She is a three-year member of the Otterbein University Hunt Seat Equestrian Team, and competes regionally on the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association circuit. She is a member of the Equine Business Management Club, and has been on Academic Dean’s List since 2011. This year she plans to be more involved in the Ohio Amateur Association, and has started attending the monthly board meetings. Jordan and Bill have shown no signs of slowing down, despite Bill turning eighteen this year. She said it is his decision when he retires, and she will continue showing him until then. They are kicking off 2014 at March to the Arch Horse Show under the guidance of Hank Clason.

Vic stated that a variance report was mailed with the finance reports and asked for questions. Vic also stated that this will be the most successful year financially for Ohio Quarter Horse Association. Tri-Chairmen Report Scott Myers reported the 2013 Congress: • There were significant changes in several areas with the focus on quality of the horse show, while making things run more efficiently and economically. • Congress Computer Program The Congress program re-write was supposed to be completed in December of 2012; however, that was not a viable option. In 2013, we continued to make strides to develop the functionality of the program. There were some wireless issues at the Congress, but overall the program was able to function effectively. The split and call back procedure was a major improvement within the program that will continue to be enhanced. We identified that with the new software, there were hardware components that needed to be added. There were tablets and screens added throughout Congress. • Online Ticket Sales Overall, this was a successful new process. There were fees for this service that were passed on to the consumer at the time of purchase. We were able to sell sponsors for the tickets and accumulate email addresses for most patrons. • PBR The Bull Ride was not going to happen this year at Nationwide Arena, so the Tri Chair decided to pursue the opportunity to have it back at the Congress. It was a great revenue producing event. • Freestyle Reining Freestyle Reining was another very successful event this year. Weaver Leather came on board to be a named sponsor. The introductory performance by Stacey Westfall and the half time performance by Shawn and Sam Flarida were very well received. • Live Feed There was a new company offering the live feed and new videographer as well. Working with these entities, we were able to generate approximately $ 20,000 in advertising on the live feed that was proportionately divided between the 3 entities. • Stall Assignments The stall draw was done in the Richwood office for the first time. The final charts were published on our website. This proved to be very exhibitor friendly. • Entries 2013 had record numbers, starting with 18,644 regular entries. When Roping, Cutting and Racing are added, there were over 20,000 total entries which made this the largest Congress ever. Scott thanked the staff for all their work and dedication.
OHIO COMMITTEE REPORTS Annual Awards • Jeff James reported that everything is on track for the year end awards Annual Banquet • Candi Fites reported on the committee meeting held earlier in the day. There was an ad ran in the Ohio News to “save the date” instead of the typical reservation form. An invitation will be mailed to all Ohio members. Drug Task Force • Dr. Dave McDonald reported that there were no positive Congress drug tests. Section 2. Ask Amber What causes stomach ulcers in horses?
Equine gastric ulcers can be caused by exposing the lining of the stomach to acidic gastric secretions over a prolonged period of time. Several factors can predispose a horse to this condition: stress, limited access to long-stem forage (hay or pasture), large meal size, frequent travel, intense competitive schedule and high starch/sugar diets. To reduce the incidence of ulcers, feed a high fat, high fiber diet low in starch and sugar. Provide access to forage and feed smaller, more frequent meals (less than five lbs each).
