Hello Ohio snowmobilers. It is hard to think about snow when its 80 degrees and humid. But we are ready for the snow. I want to start off by thanking the OSSA board for their vote of confidence in electing me to a 3rd term as President of the Association. It has been a challenging and rewarding experience, but one that I look forward to and accept. In June we attended the International Snowmobile Congress in Green Bay Wisconsin. The focus at this year’s congress was maintaining land access. To us, that means keeping our trails open.

The American Council of Snowmobile Associations, (our parent organization) leads the fight to keep these state and federal forests open to snowmobiles. The constant barrage of law suits is never ending. One bright spot was when a forester from Yellowstone National Park spoke to our group. He informed us that the current arrangement allowing limited snowmobile and snow coaches into the park will be continued. It was of interest that long time snowmobiler and business owner, Bill Howell, of West Yellowstone, spoke about how the arrangements work and why rules are made, (sometimes good and sometimes not so good). Bill has run a hotel and snowmobile rental business for many years, and knows first hand how important it is to keep snowmobiling open to the public. One of the new rules for the future will be to allow limited self guided snowmobile groups in the park. Back in 2007, I was blessed to see Yellowstone on a sled. I will say that a guide is definitely the way to go. Their expertise and vast knowledge of the area was worth the extra money. If you ever have the chance to visit Yellowstone in the winter, jump at the chance. It is the trip of a lifetime. This is just one of the several fights ACSA has taken on for us, the snowmobiling public. If we loose one area, it very well could set the precedent to close others.

Back to our riding area. Please get involved with your club. As volunteers, we all need to do our part to keep our trails open. Ask how can I help out; trail clearing, brushing, sign placement, or fund raising can help the clubs be more successful. If we all do our part, it can be very rewarding. Stay involved, keep informed and most importantly, be a courteous snowmobiler.

Hello to all my fellow snowmobilers. I hope you all have had a safe and fruitful summer and that none of you had too much water damage from all the rain. Let’s expect this weather to translate into some decent snowfalls if all this rain can be any indication. I would like to take this time to thank Bill Dresnek, Mike Vystrcil and Tyler Vystrcil for their service on the board. They will be missed. I would like to welcome 4 new board members, Ken Weisbarth, Mike and Tracy Pasko and Charlie Zawislak as our alternate. Now for those of you that missed out on the Spring Banquet, it was held at Quail Hollow, and let me tell you, that you missed out on a lot. The food was excellent and we revamped the agenda. Dealer of the Year was awarded at the banquet. Barb and Barry Weaver won this award for the Trinton Dealership they operate. Snowmobiler of the Year went to Ken Weisbarth. We also awarded the $500.00 Betty Kuntz/OSSA Scholarship and that went to Brent Beichner. Congratulations to these very deserving individuals. The 2014 season is coming up on us faster than you think. As we prepare for this snowmobile season, please take notice of individuals along with businesses that you believe have done a great job of promoting this sport and nominate them. What a great way to say thank you for all of the things they have done so that you may enjoy this sport. You can find the nomination forms on the OSSA website at snowmobileohio.com for all the awards that were mentioned in this paragraph. Gary Hines was voted in again for the third time as your OSSA president; Jennifer Hines is now Treasurer, and Barb Weaver is the Secretary. This year Gary, Jennifer and I attended ISC (International Snowmobile Congress) held in Green Bay, Wisconsin. We are winning some of the battles against the tree huggers; they seem to have a never ending supply of money, which means there are more challenges ahead of us to keep our sport alive. This means we need to get more people into our clubs. Why? You ask. Think of it this way. If you throw a pebble in the pond it makes a small ripple but when you throw a boulder in, everyone around the pond notices. The snowmobile clubs in Ohio have a lot of trails on private land which have some stipulations. When these stipulations are broken, we lose trail access which affects all of us. Please remember that each and every one of us impacts our sport; good and bad. We want to tip the scales in our favor and that can only happen if a snowmobiler becomes more informed by joining a club and help by giving back. I would like every one of you to recruit a non-snowmobile club member and get them to join with you. You can make a difference and help us fight the good fight and keep our sport alive and growing. Please remember that only you can make a difference.

ISR has a new owner Eagle River, WI: International Snowmobile Racing, Inc. (ISR) has been purchased by Todd Achterberg and is now located in Eagle River, WI at 1527 N. Railroad Street in the World Snowmobile Headquarters building. Achterberg is the former General Manager of the AMSOIL Eagle River Derby Track and brings 13 years of management and experience with snowmobile racing to ISR. Formed 31 years ago by Richard Goekey, Thomas Zernia and Olav Aaen, ISR provides a common ground and rules structure for the many different snowmobile sanctioning bodies, clubs and organizations that wish to conduct races in a safe and organized manner. As owner and CEO of ISR, Achterberg's strong leadership skills and playing an active role in
the daily activity of the company will provide a strong foundation for IRS to move forward. His past Derby experience has given him the opportunity to work first hand in every aspect of snowmobile racing. This experience and knowledge of the industry will allow him to pave the way for even greater growth of snowmobile racing in the coming years. "ISR has already started on the development of new programs that will launch in the coming months. These will bring additional opportunities for race promoters and organizations to produce improved events. We are building on a 20 year long commitment to conduct snowmobile races that fit and fulfill the needs of these organizations," Achterberg states.

It was a wonderful, beautiful time. I would like to thank everyone who attended. We had a attendance of 60 members show up. Gary Hines held the meeting. There were five random charity’s chosen, Montville, Wakeman, Flying Tigers, Troy, and Grand River Trail Riders. OSSA will match their Donation (up to $100.00).The new sled was picked, 2013 Polaris 600 Indy thru American Powersports. At the Spring Banquet we announce the Snowmobiler of the Year, Business of the Year, and we have the Scholarship Winner present with their family.

In picking a Individual for these events, we have a non-involved person from different communities do the picking. The names and all personal information were blaked out. This way there is no way of knowing who the Individual’s are. The Scholarship was renamed. It is now “OSSA/ Betty Kunz Memorial Scholarship”. There were four applicants. The winner of the essay was Brent Beichner from Troy. Brent and his family were present to accept. Business of the Year, went to Barry’s Auto Repair. They were nominated due to all of their

If it has to do with the outdoors you can rent a spot for the day and sell your items or you may just browse around and find a great deal. We have raffles going on all day and will be serving breakfast and lunch too. So bring a friend and plan to spend the day, this event is rain or shine and there is no rain date so come prepared. Cost is a $2.00 donation for admittance and should you want a spot to sell your things it is $15.00 pre-register and $20 dollars day of. The ROD officially completes the Winter Use Plan/Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) process. The ROD assures continued access to Yellowstone in Winter by both snowmobiles and snowcoaches. There remains one final step in the current Winter Use planning effort by the Park Service. That step is the creation of a “New Regulation” to implement the ROD. That new regulation should be published in the Federal Register in late September, 2013. The new regulation comes with one concern that I will cover at the end of the Good News part of this article. And now for the Good News. The ROD for Winter Use shows that our collective comments on the “Proposed Rule”, which ended June 17, 2013 have been heard. The ROD will provide a framework for more effectively managed access for snowmobiles and snowcoaches in Yellowstone National Park while minimizing impacts on visitors, air/sound quality, and wildlife. The final regulation, yet to be released, will guide management of winter use in the Park and will implement the preferred alternative from the Final SEIS. Under the Record of Decision, the winter of 2013/2014 will be a transition year during which the Park will allow motorized over-snow travel under the same conditions in place for the past four winters. Up to 318 commercially guided Best Available Technology (BAT) snowmobiles and up to 78 commercially guided snowcoaches will be allowed daily.

Starting in the 2014/2015 Winter season the Park would permit up to 110 “transportation events” daily, initially defined as one snowcoach or a group of up to 10 snowmobiles, averaging seven snowmobiles per group per season. Up to 50 transportation events may be groups of snowmobiles. Management by transportation events is an impact-centric approach designed to minimize the impact of oversnow vehicles (OSVs) on air quality, soundscapes, and wildlife rather than focusing solely on the number of vehicles entering the Park. This new, practical approach to OSV management by “transportation events” will provide greater flexibility for OSV commercial tour operators, reward future OSV technological innovations, and reduce OSV-caused environmental impacts, all while making the Park cleaner and quieter than previously authorized. Another important part of the ROD is that four transportation events per day (one per gate) would be reserved for non-commercially guided snowmobile access and Sylvan Pass would continue to be operated in accordance with the Sylvan Pass Working Group Agreement. The non-commercially guide access will provide snowmobilers a change to visit their Park without hiring a commercial guide. Now, our remaining concern. BlueRibbon and it’s Winter Use partners will be watching the new regulation’s treatment of BAT for snowmobiles. The ROD for the first time describes the timeline for NEW BAT standards as “beginning no later than the 2017/2018 winter season.” This seemingly creates the potential for a decision to require NEW BAT compliance earlier than the previouslyannounced 2017/2018 season. There are scenarios in which a hastily considered or poorly timed effort to prematurely implement NEW BAT requirements could threaten future access to the Park. We will remain watchful and vigilant to protect against this possibility. BlueRibbon will provide current information as it becomes available at our dedicated website - www.saveyellowstonepark.com. I hope that everyone had a great summer, it seems that it never really stayed with us very long and it was always raining. Its hard to believe that its already time to switch to snowmobile mode and get ready for the upcoming snowmobile season. Where does the time go? Well to start off the season the highlanders have already secured the date for our annual reverse raffle and it will be held on January 18, 2014. Tickets will be available soon so mark your calendars as the date has been set well in advance. We will be having a booth at the Huntsburg Pumpkin festival the weekend of October 5&6 and we will be selling raffle tickets for the OSSA raffle sled so stop in and see us. If you have never been to the festival come out and see what it is about, I am sure you will enjoy yourself. We will start to have our meetings on September 12 and they are held the second Thursday of the month at the Montville community center in Montville. Our group will be working on some continued trail expansion opportunities for the upcoming riding season and we hope to have things in place before the snow flies. See everyone soon, Chip

TRAIL NEWS Trail parties have been scheduled for October 27, November 10, November 24, and December 15. Workers are to meet at the club storage building at 8:30 a.m.
OLD BUSINESS: Barry Weaver thanked all that helped with summer events. The reverse raffle was held on April 27 and was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who helped with the raffle and for obtaining door prizes. Also, thank you to all of the businesses who supported us by donating door prizes for the raffle. Barry thanked Rod for organizing the bowling event held in March. Barry thanked Jim Cufr for chairing the golf outing and club picnic held in June. Barry reported that work parties were held at the club storage building approximately every two weeks throughout the summer. Thanks to everyone who showed up to help. Some of the projects performed during the work parties included getting the floor cleared for the concrete work, painting, weed trimming, mowing, putting up storage brackets, and moving items back after the concrete work was completed. NEW BUSINESS: The club held ticket raffles for two guns. Winning tickets for both guns were drawn on September 7 during the Andover Fire Department gun raffle held at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds. Thanks to Bob Callender for donating one of the guns, which was a Mossberg .22 caliber 702 Plinkster. Bob also paid for the printing of raffle tickets for that gun. In addition to selling tickets for the guns, Paul Carpenter, Rick and Patty Hoyson, and Barb and Barry Weaver sold OSSA raffle tickets at the Andover Fire Department event. Twenty percent of the OSSA ticket sales from that day will come back to our club. Bob Callender donated a storage cabinet for the club building. The club purchased a car hauling trailer from Jim Cufr to use for work parties, club floats, etc. Ed Borris will purchase lights for the club storage building. Ed will need help installing the lights. Paul Carpenter will be in contact with the Sheriff’s Department regarding setting up police officers to provide law enforcement on the trail for the coming snowmobile season.
Clam Bake / Steak Fry / Picnic – Prior to our next club meeting on October 6, we will have a picnic at the club storage building beginning at 2:00 p.m. Costs are as follows: clam bake - $20 per person; steak fry - $15 per person; hot dogs or burgers - $5 per person. Jeff Nemerovsky and Tom Nemitz will chair the picnic. Please call Barb and Barry Weaver at 576-0635 as to your choice of food by September 27th. Rod Butcher will chair the “First Rideable Snow Contest”. Submit entries to Rod by November 10. Rod will also chair a bowling event this fall. Details will be in the next newsletter. Club Trip - A club trip has been scheduled in Marienville, PA for January 17 to January 19, 2014. Anyone interested in going should call Microtel Inn and Suites at 814-927-8300 to make reservations and let them know that you are with Grand River Trail Riders. After you make your reservations, please call Ed and Michelle Borris at 440-563-5063 and let them know you are attending. The next Reverse Raffle has been set for April 26, 2014 at the Expo Center at the Ashtabula Fairgrounds. Recommendations are needed for a charity for the reverse raffle.

In considering this heavy downfall, we have decided to use some monies to purchase trail signs for safety to riders and respect to land owner s and drivers. Please come out to the next meeting, Tuesday, October 8th, as we will be discussing trail work dates and schedules, get togethers, and the annual raffle, amongst other important topics. About the club: The Wakeman Sno-Ballers are a non-profit organization and show great community pride in everything we do while bringing all of us, with the common interest of riding together. We are not a seasonal-type club as we schedule events and get-together’s year around. We are very family oriented and would like to extend an open invitation to anyone interested in attending our meetings or joining. We meet at 8pm every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at the Wakeman Eagles Lodge on Route 20 in Wakeman, Ohio. This past summer events: Our annual golf outing and after party was held on June 29th at Pheasant Run golf course in Lagrange, Ohio. There was a great attendance and everyone had a good time. I would like to send a personal thanks to those that brought the marshmallows out for all to find in the grass along the way. Seems from a distance they really do look like a golf ball, hahaha. A congratulations to Bill, Chris and Sean for winning the outing this year! August 10th held our annual motorcycle poker run, snowmobile water cross race and after party. The motorcycle group put on quite a few miles along the shores of Lake Erie that day with various stops along the way. Congratulations are in order for Darin “aka Lippy” for having the winning hand with a pair of Jacks. Snowmobile water cross was also a success with nobody sinking their
sleds this year! The annual grass drags were held September 7th at the Wakeman Lagoons. We would like to send a huge thank you to the city of Wakeman for letting us use this property again this year. There was a good turnout with pizza supplied by the club. We had 3 registered races and the winners are as follows: Top Gun: Bill Hanko Trail Stock: Todd Wolf Vintage Class: Todd Wolf Thanks to all that attended and congratulations to the winners! Up coming events for this winter: Trail cleaning work party it currently scheduled for November 24th. There are a few trials that need a lot of work due to the dead fall we had. Chainsaws, clippers and other tools will be needed along with able bodies. If interested in joining us for the clean up, please keep the date open. There are also a few fun events we are planning again for this year. These include our annual snowmobile poker, club member’s family poker run and our annual ski trip. Vehicle Donation Program continues to provide additional support for BlueRibbon and is a Win-Win for our members
The Partnership between the Vehicles for Charity (VFC) and the BlueRibbon Coalition has continued to grow since the program kicked off in July 2008. As we move toward the Fall of 2013 I am pleased to report that the Vehicle For Charity (VFC) program continues to help BlueRibbon efforts to maintain access to our public lands. In July of this year the program received a 1987 Yamaha 350 Warrior ATV from Andrew and Cassandra Blair of Thousand Oaks, California. Andrew made the toll free call to VFC and made the arrangements to pick up the ATV. After the ATV was sold at auction by VFC, BlueRibbon Coalition will receive, after expenses, a contribution for BlueRibbon Programs. And remember that Andrew and Cassandra will get a tax deduction for the entire amount of the sale; truly a win-win situation. Special reminder: The BlueRibbon VFC program accepts the following donated vehicles which can be a car, truck, SUV, RV, camper, motorcycle, snowmobile, ATV, PWC, boat, or trailer. Let’s take a minute to review how the program works. The process is simple. Just call 1-866-628-2277 to speak to a VFC
representative. Be sure to tell them you are calling about the BlueRibbon Vehicle Donation Program. The vehicle is usually picked up in 3-5 days at your convenience. 2014 Polaris® IQ® Race Sled Delivers Improved Holeshots and Enhanced Handling With New Lightweight Crankshaft and 128” Rear Suspension Polaris® snowmobile racers will enjoy the competitive advantages of the innovative new 2014 Polaris IQ® Race Sled that features a new lightweight crankshaft and new 128” rear suspension. These improvements and other updates to the race sled are designed to provide Polaris racers with better holeshot performance, enhanced throttle response, improved traction and greater stability in the rough for Terrain Domination. The new 2014 Polaris IQ Race Sled is the result of integrated collaboration among Polaris snocross and cross-country racers, race team personnel and Polaris snowmobile engineers. Together, they developed the new features and validated them through extensive testing that included use in selected races last season. The Polaris Racing Department has historically led the industry in developing innovative racing technology that “Wins on Sunday, Sells on Monday,” including legendary Polaris IFS, powerful 2-stroke engines and more. “This season’s race sled is the refinement of a legendary vehicle, with a focus on holeshot and throttle response improvements,” said Matt Prusak, Race Program Leader in the Polaris Snowmobile Division. “The benefits will be seen by snocross and crosscountry racers alike.” Polaris Race Manager Tom Rager, Jr., said racers and teams have been impressed with the performance of the new race sled in testing and on-track evaluations. “The industry’s only purpose-built race sled just keeps getting better and better,” said Rager. “A lot of the sled’s development credit goes to several of our riders, Ross Martin in particular, who tested it and made it so good.” Feature Updates on the 2014 Polaris IQ Race Sled Re-engineered elements of the 2014 Polaris IQ Race Sled include: • NEW Lightweight Crankshaft The new lightweight crankshaft features a design that provides the same balance as the previous crankshaft – with a 2.5-pound weight reduction in rotating mass. This results in a 25% reduction in inertia, improved throttle response and increased acceleration. Racers will achieve better holeshots, and the engine will reach its optimal operating RPM faster. • NEW 128” Rear Suspension Polaris® racers will benefit from the increased traction of the new 128” rear suspension and new 128” track. This new setup delivers better holeshots, better stability in whoops sections, and improved cornering. Similar to the setup that Polaris teams have raced with great success in the Mod class for more than four seasons, this new rear suspension is based on the original IQ® Race geometry, with new rail beams and tunnel components to package the longer track length. The 2014 Polaris IQ Race Sled utilizes an aggressive new 128” Sno-XT track. “Along with delivering an improved holeshot, the new rear suspension tracks straighter in the whoops sections, and results in less ski lift for enhanced turning,” Prusak said. “Our crosscountry racers in particular will benefit from the improved high-speed stability.”
Along with the new 128” rear suspension, additional improvements were made to enhance performance and reliability. • Updated Shock Calibration Polaris engineers, race teams and the technicians at Walker Evans Racing have combined forces to recalibrate the Walker Evans® shocks used in the race sled’s front and rear suspension. The updates are designed to ensure consistently outstanding performance from green flag to checkered on demanding terrain such as extreme snocross tracks. • NEW Brake Pads The new Hayes™ Type 126 brake pads were developed to deliver consistently reliable braking as brake systems heat up during aggressive racing action. Racers will also see an improvement in brake pad life. • NEW MY14 Racing Graphics While Polaris racing teams will customize their sleds with team graphics, racing numbers and sponsor logos, they’ll start with a new look that features a white hood, red belly pan, accents of red, white and blue, and Polaris graphics. Advanced assembly techniques minimize the parts count to keep weight to a minimum while delivering maximum strength and reliability. The race sled is powered by the Polaris Liberty® 600 engine. It delivers class-leading acceleration for outstanding holeshots as well as impressive horsepower across the entire RPM range. A long lasting winter and continued enthusiasm and interest in snowmobiling powered snowmobile sales to increase worldwide to 144,601 new sleds sold this past year. This is an increase of over 15,000 units, which is a 12 percent gain from last year. Sales in the United States were flat at 48,536 new snowmobiles sold, while sales in Canada rose over 8 percent to 44, 022 new sleds sold. The snowmobile community is optimistic following the above average snowfall throughout most of North America this past season. The 2014 manufacturers spring snowmobile shows reported dramatic increases in attendance. In many of the spring shows, visitation was up over 30 percent. Spring orders are up and that points to a good 2014 sales year! The snowmobile industry reports an increase in registered snowmobiles in North America to approximately 2 million registered sleds. Increased registration in Northern Europe and Russia continues, and there are over 700,000 registered units in the European community and Russia. Snowmobile related tourism also increased in North America and beyond. This can be seen in economic impact studies conducted throughout North America by major business colleges and universities. Miles ridden by snowmobilers (which is always predictive of economic impact) showed a 20 percent increase in the 2012-2013 season. This is a result of good riding conditions and improved and expanded trail systems. The average age of a snowmobiler this past season was determined to be 43 years of age. The average age increased slightly due to the fact that many younger adults are struggling to pay off school loans and are struggling due to the slower growth of the economy. Surveys conducted by ISMA have shown that slightly over 70% of first-time buyers in the snowmobile market purchased a used snowmobile. Many of them are young adults and they move on to purchase a new snowmobile later in life. The majority of snowmobilers in North America are Club members and/or Association-Federation members (over 50%). These active, involved, outdoor enthusiasts build the trails and support snow-

mobiling access. Snowmobilers are also active charity fundraisers who raised over $3.4 million dollars for National Charities last year. The Go Snowmobiling website serves as another strong indicator for the interest in snowmobiling. This year more than 4.4 million visited the Go Snowmobiling site. This is a 15 percent increase above last year. Statistics show that approximately 20 percent of those visitors are individuals who do not own a snowmobile but are expressing a great deal of interest in owning a snowmobile and going snowmobiling. It was also noted that approximately 20 percent of the visitors to the site visited the rental outlet pages of the site. Indications are that many of the individuals visiting the rental site do not own a snowmobile but want to rent one during their winter vacation. This activity and interest in renting bodes well for future sales and the growth in the snowmobile rental market. Additional surveys have found that snowmobilers are active in many outdoor activities. Many snowmobilers are also boaters, motorcycle riders, camping enthusiasts, hunting enthusiasts and general outdoor recreational activity participants. Many individuals have discovered that snowmobiling is a great recreational family activity in the winter. Many of those individuals are snowmobiling for reasons such as viewing the scenery, be with family and friends, and to get away from the usual demands of life and be close to nature. The continued broad-based growth of the snowmobile community includes the increased number of visitors and exhibitors in snowmobile shows. States and provincial organizations continue to grow and expand club membership. Many organizations report that new trails are being developed to support the positive economic impact of snowmobiling and job growth for the rural community. Economic impact studies generated by universities in North America show that snowmobiling is growing in importance as part of the overall economic engine and job growth for winter tourism. Estimates show that snowmobiling now generates more than $30 Billion Dollars of economic activity in North America. The economic activity generated by snowmobiling provides many jobs and investment opportunities and generates considerable tax revenue for local governments which eagerly support snowmobiling.

The members of the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (Arctic Cat, BRP, Polaris, and Yamaha) join the organized snowmobile community in announcing the Take a Friend Snowmobiling Contest for 2014. State and provincial snowmobile association members of the American Council of Snowmobile Association (ACSA) and the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) are eligible to win a $5,000 cash prize by sponsoring Take a Friend Snowmobiling activities throughout their states and provinces. The event was created to support all snowmobile associations of ACSA and CCSO and their clubs to enhance and expand their partnership with local Chambers of Commerce, Visitor and Convention Bureaus, snowmobile dealers, and other businesses related to the snowmobiling community. The benefits of winning the $5,000 prize for your state association could mean such things as more trail signs, groomers, and enhancements for trails in your state, with the biggest benefit of all ~ introducing your non-snowmobiling friends to your favorite winter activity. All clubs are encouraged to participate in the event and partner with local media, radio stations, television stations, etc in promoting your Take a Friend Snowmobiling event and your club activities. Extensive research has shown that a vast majority of non-snowmobilers who live in the snow-belt are very interested in snowmobiling. When asked to rate their interest on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest level of interest) nonsnowmobilers rate their interest at 9! Research has also shown us that most individuals that live in the snow-belt see snowmobiling as a great way to: a. Enjoy the scenery b. Get outdoors and have fun with family and friends c. Go to unique places and see amazing sights d. Have fun in the winter outdoors and be able to go home tired and ready for a good night’s sleep. This is the second annual Take a Friend Snowmobiling contest, sponsored by the manufacturers who encourage all snowmobilers to take their non-snowmobiling friends out snowmobiling to enjoy the winter. We hope your club and association will participate in a Take a Friend Snowmobiling event. Talk with neighboring clubs to participate as well. Let your association office know about your plans. The events should increase the profile of your club and attract new support and members.
