The OSSA board has been busy working on events for all snowmobilers.

snowmobiler of the year will be on the new OSSA website to download. This award is for someone who goes above and beyond the average snowmobiler to get things done, or make things work to keep us going. It may be a simple thing or something extraordinary that the person has done to promote snowmobiling. Please look at your club members and consider who is worthy of this award. Simply submit the application and the committee will select the best applicant for the award.

First, the Snowmobile Safety class is set for Jan. 13 at the Stateline Sno-Trackers clubhouse. The class will be from 12 to 4, the location is at 5380 Root Road, Conneaut Ohio. Contact Tim Doerr for details at 216870 8891. The class is free to all, and the Stateline club will furnish lunch for the students. The safety class is needed for anyone riding out of state that does not have a current driver’s license.

The dealer of the year is awarded to the business that best promotes snowmobiling; this is usually a snowmobile dealership, but consider the businesses that help us during our season that really shine as a “pro-snowmobiling” business. Again the application will be on the OSSA website. These awards are always a highlight of our year to honor those who help us throughout our season.

The annual spring meeting is set for April 6, 2013. The event will be held at the Quail Hollow resort in Concord, Ohio. Details are being finalized, so watch for further information coming soon.

Hope the snow gods are good to us this 2012-2013. We are due for a good old fashioned snowy winter season.

Gary Hines Hello Ohio Snowmobilers,

Hello fellow Snowmobilers, I hope that all of you had very special holidays. Mine was as busy as ever with the snowmobile season about to get cookin, there are plenty of events to attend or for that matter participate in. One of the events that comes to mind is the Chardon Winter fest that will be held on January 19. I hope to see a lot of you out there as the OSSA will be there. I know you might ask why you should come to this event, well the OSSA needs your help. You see we like to represent snowmobilers again in the best possible light and while we are in attendance for this we also like to give rides to the public and this is where you come in. We would like anyone that has a two up snowmobile or a sled that is able to carry you and a passenger via the +1 seat that can be attached to your sled. You need to have insurance on your sled to do this though and will be asked to prove you have insurance so make sure you bring your insurance card. We are also looking for some helmets that could be lent to us for the day as all passengers along with the driver must have a helmet on; it’s safety first after all. I have attended this type of venue at other locations and you will not believe the kind of reception you get taking someone that has never been on a snowmobile before. You will have such a good time. I bet a lot of you will want to attend other events such as this. You have to admit that the more we can grow our numbers the more respect we will get and the easier it will be to establish a state trail network in this state. One other benefit that will stay with you a very long time is the smile that you put on someone’s face and they range in age from the young to our beloved seniors. So mark your calendars and save the date of January 19, and plan on giving rides from around 9am to around 2 or 3pm. Should you want to help with this or have any Questions you may call me at 440-834-1030 or you can also call Gary Hines at 440-992-3434.

Betty Sue Kunz (1938-2012) It is with heavy hearts that we pass along the sad news that we have lost a dear friend, Betty Kunz on December 18, 2012. If you have ever been a snowmobiler in Ohio, you probably ran across, met or rode with Betty and her husband Lee. Betty was a member of at least 4 Ohio Snowmobile Clubs, 3 State Associations and ACSA. She could always be found selling tickets and raising money for all the Clubs and Associations she belonged to from Ohio to Michigan to Pennsylvania. Betty was actively involved with OSSA for a number of years and even attended meetings within this past year to share more of her wisdom and experiences. We will miss Betty more than can be said in words and our thoughts and prayers are with Lee and his family.

Make sure to check your safety kits and replace the water, orange juice or whatever liquid you carry with you and to also put new candy bars and granola bars in as well. FX Nytro RTX Wins at USXC Pine Lake 200

Yamaha FX Nytro RTX snowmobiles came out of gate fast and furious to start the 2013 cross-country racing season with a win and a pair of top-five finishes in key classes at the inaugural United States X-Country (USXC) Pine Lake 200 in Gonvick, Minn. on Dec. 15-16. The 50-mile Semi-Pro Final was held on Sunday, with Ben Lindbom and Jake Muller both qualifying well on their FX Nytros. At the start Lindbom grabbed the holeshot and led the race literally wire to wire, putting more distance between his Yamaha and any pursuers with each lap. At the finish he was over a minute and a full mile a head of the nearest competitor. Meanwhile, Muller likewise had a great race going, charging up to third place and looking set for a podium finish in his first full season in cross-country racing for Yamaha. But a minor chassis issue scuttled his plans on the final lap and a potential 1-2 Yamaha finish.

Wadena Muller

Race distance for Saturday’s Pro Open Final was a grueling 103 miles on the Pine Lake ice surface. And just as in Sunday’s events, it was heads-up competition with each row of competitors launching simultaneously. Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ross Erdman ran as high as fourth in the early going, with newcomer Wadena in fifth and Lindbom (Semi Pro drivers are allowed to race two Pro races to gauge talent) charging behind them from a second-row start. But the Yamaha teammates’ race order turned upside down at about one-third distance as Erdman had a minor crash, dropping downfield to ultimately finish seventh. That left Wadena and Lindbom to chase the leaders on their FX Nytros, with both riding strongly to claim top-five finishes in the fastest race on the 2013 USXC calendar. Erdman “This weekend proved how fast our sleds really are at 112 mph – the FX Nytro RTX was definitely the fastest buggy out there” said Yamaha Factory Racing’s Eric Josephsen. Josephsen also recognized Brian Strawsell, Yamaha’s snowmobile racing technical coordinator, for all of his efforts on behalf of the team. “Brian has been the driving force behind the FX Nytro on the track since we brought it out in 2008 – we simply couldn’t do it all without him.” Josephsen noted. Paper cut-out Snowmobile ready for use Contact: Ed Klim Phone: (517) 339-7788 Haslett, MI: The Take a Friend/Go Snowmobiling campaign is pleased to present a new addition to its list of ready to use snowmobiling campaign material. The all new ready to cut-out and assemble paper snowmobile model is here for free distribution and use. Introduced at shows in North America, this snowmobile cut-out paper model was originally created for children at the shows and safety training programs held throughout North America. It was discovered that not only children and young snowmobilers enjoy printing and assembling the paper snowmobile, but adults of all ages jumped into the mix and participated in snowmobile contests at shows. The attached snowmobile cut-out, with assembly instructions, is easy to distribute electronically and can be used to liven up table decorations at functions, classrooms, etc. The paper snowmobiles can be assembled quickly. The concept and the artwork was created for the Go Snowmobiling Campaign by our poster artist, the wonderful Robert Van Nood. Robert is the artist behind the ISMA Safe Riders! poster series. His creative genius is recognized not only in the snowmobile business but in other Power Sports industries and outdoor recreation activities worldwide. The first ISMA poster “Snowmobiling and Alcohol don’t mix / Don’t Drink and Ride” was created for ISMA in 1996 by Robert Van Nood. His artistic skills continue to provide us with fun, educational and promotional tools to help support snowmobiling. Please print off a few copies of the paper snowmobile and send us your thoughts on our newest addition to the Go Snowmobiling collateral material. You can send us pictures on www.Facebook.com/GoSnowmobiling to highlight how you are using the cut-out in your club and association events. We encourage you to send this fun piece to your members, local media and place it on your web sites. The snowmobile cut-outs will be available on our websites: www.snowmobile.org and www. gosnowmobiling.org. Semi-Kneeling

Sitting

A semi-kneeling position, where one knee is up under you on the seat and the other foot is on the snowmobile’s running board, can be useful when riding in deep powder snow while riding at slower speeds. This will help with visibility and also help to control the snowmobile.

Standing

This position should only be used when you have visibility troubles in the sitting position. Be sure to keep your knees bent to absorb the bumps on the trail and keep your speed slow. Do not use this position for regular riding, for it can be hard to react to situations and doesn’t allow quick control in case of an emergency.

This is a good alternative riding position to rest the body while riding at slow speeds. For this position, put your knees up under you on your seat. It can help with better visibility, but it is more difficult to keep your balance.

This is a semi-sitting position that is best suited for traveling over uneven terrain. Keep your feet flat on the snowmobile running boards and bend your knees. This will help with visibility too.

Nationally Approved Ha Left arm raised at shoulder height, elbow bent and forearm vertical, wrist bent, move are from left to right over head, pointing to the right side of trails.

STOP*

Arm raised from the shoulder and extended straight up over the head with the palm of hand flat. Left arm may also be used to signal “STOP”.

Riding Positions... This is the safest and most common riding position. Position yourself on the snowmobile with your feet flat on the running boards. This will help cushion the effects of bumps on the trail and also keep your feet safe from the tracks or objects. When sitting, keep your body weight low so it will be easier to shift from side to side.

Hello fellow snowmobilers, I hope that everyone had a great Christmas holiday and maybe the new year will bring us some significant snow fall accumulation but we will have to wait and see. The Highlander group has been busy preparing for our Annual Pig Roast scheduled for January 19, so if you don’t have your tickets yet be sure to get them. We will also be giving snowmobile rides at the Chardon Winterfest this year also scheduled for January 19, 2013 from 10:00 to 2:00 and we could use some help from the snowmobile community to give rides at this event. This will be the second year of giving rides and I think that it will eventually grow to be a good sized event in the future. Its always good to be able to talk to people in the community at events like this one to educate them that we are not a bunch of outlaws and we do respect peoples property, so if you are able to come out and participate please let me know. Speaking of outlaws I must share an interesting story that happened to the highlander group. On Sunday morning I was having breakfast and I got a call from my VP (aka squirt) I was in a restaurant so I did not answer my phone so I let it go to voicemail, it rang again and it was him and once again I let it go to voicemail as I was almost done eating. Then it rang once more and it was Erin (squirts significant other) I thought this must be very important so I answered it and she proceeded to tell me that there were

The Ohio State Snowmobiler – The Official Publication of the Ohio State Snowmobile Association 1/2/13 4:02 PM

www.snowmobileohio.com 3 4x4 trucks coming out of our trail system full of mud and they just so happened to catch them from an anonymous tip they received. Squirt was telling them how he felt about them tearing up part of our trail and I could hear him on my cell phone. I will say it wasn’t nice. I asked them to get the licence plate numbers, which they did. I left my breakfast and headed to Montville to survey the damage. Well we have 2 to 3 foot ruts, They probably would of tore up about 4 miles of trails but one of the trucks got hung up in a ditch that we put a bridge over for snowmobiles and totally destroyed our bridge so the damage was limited to about 1/4 mile. Well guess what as the Club President I now had to go talk to 2 landowners that this has affected, explain to them what happened, I gave them the license plate numbers in case they wanted to call the sheriff and make a report and then comes the statement you know, if we didn’t allow you to put a trail in the first place to ride your snowmobile this probably would of never happened! What can I say they are right! So as of now we will have some damage to fix but we still can use the trail. I guess to sum this whole thing up is maybe the trails should stay really narrow, we worry about bikes, 4 wheelers and now trucks! When will it stop! I understand why people don’t join the local clubs and organizations. Who needs this aggravation. I guess that if you see, hear or even suspect that people are doing things that are not right, let the clubs know or we will all be investing in trucks, trailers permits etc. to ride our snowmobiles out of state or in state if you enjoy your backyard only. This stuff has got to stop!! That’s it see ya on the snow.

Hoping everyone has enjoyed a safe Christmas/New Year season. The Wakeman Sno-Ballers are a non-profit organization and show great community pride in everything we do while bringing all of us together with the common interest of riding together. This year the club was able to donate $1,000.00 to the caring community charity in Wakeman. This is an organization that helps the local families in need and they were extremely grateful for the donation this year, as there are more people in need then ever before due to the economy and job market. The funds were used to supply families in need with food for the holidays. We are planning a poker run again this year as long as the weather permits. Please add us to your facebook account and watch for further updates. Trail cleaning has been completed and we are now waiting on the snow to fall. With any luck we will have a better riding season then we had last year. A special thanks to all club members who came out and not only donated their time but equipment as well. To anyone interested in joining or attending our meetings, we meet at 8pm every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at the Wakeman Eagles Lodge on route 20. Feel free to join us at any time. However due to the holiday, the second meeting in December has been canceled so we can all spend Christmas day with our families. We hope to see you on the trails!

CHAMPIONSHIP SNOWMOBILE RACING COMES TO SENECA ALLEGANY CASINO & HOTEL IN FEBRUARY

More than 200 of the world’s greatest snowmobilers to race in AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series during three action-packed days – February 22-24 Media Contact: Tony Astran, Publicity Manager for Seneca Gaming Corporation Phone: 716-501-2066 • E-mail: TAstran@SenecaCasinos.com SALAMANCA, NY – A new outdoor event is coming to Western New York this February on the grounds of Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel, and it will make spectators’ hearts pump fast. More than 200 of the top snowmobile racers from North America and nearly a dozen countries worldwide will converge in Salamanca, NY, for the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series, presented by Traxxas, from February 22 to 24. The racers will face off in a full-throttle, action-packed series of races that combine big-air jumps and competitive racing. Crews will turn one million gallons of water into snow over a football-field-sized plot of land at Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel to create snowmobile tracks with wicked twists and turns, as well as ramps that will send vehicles flying dozens of feet into the air. The weekend is also one of eight nationallytelevised events on CBS Sports Network for the 2012-2013 season. Tickets for the event go on sale Monday, Dec. 3, at the Logo Shop inside Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel and online at www.isocracing.com. Ticket prices are $25 for Friday, $25 for Saturday, $15 for Sunday, or a valuepriced $30 all-weekend pass. Admission is free for children ages six and younger. Bleachers set up around the track can accommodate thousands of fans, and bright lights will illuminate the track during the evening hours on Friday and Saturday, when the main events take place and are taped for television. The atmosphere will be festive, including food, beverage, gear for purchase in the nearby Seneca Allegany Events Center, jumbo-sized video screens, autograph sessions and activities for the whole family

– including the Traxxas Try Me Track, which allows fans to test remote-controlled trucks on a snow-covered course. According to Carl Schubitzke, president and race director, International Series of Champions (ISOC) Racing, New York State is a “hotbed” for snowmobile enthusiasts, and Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel is a perfect fit for races. “We’re looking to entertain and welcome people with open arms,” he said. “The speeds and sounds are exhilarating. You definitely won’t get this at home.” Approximately 50 practice, qualifying, and final races will take place each of the three days, including 22 races during both the Friday and Saturday night main events. Amateur racing takes place in the afternoons, culminating in a major race on Sunday. As many as 15 vehicles will be on the track during a race, and individual races are broken down by age, gender, and snowmobile type. This is Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel’s second big venture in the world of snowmobiling. In late October of 2011, Seneca Gaming Corporation and the Seneca Nation of Indians provided a substantial sponsorship to Snow Bounders, Inc., a local snowmobile association, for the construction and maintenance of a new 1.5-mile snowmobile trail that connects Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel to 90 miles of existing trails in nearby Allegany State Park. Snowmobiling is a $1 billion industry in New York State, and there are nearly 17,000 registered snowmobiles in Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties combined. Schubitzke is confident that the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series will be a further economic boon for the region.

“There’s so much to do throughout the whole experience,” Schubitzke said. “It’s highly entertaining, and there’s never a dull moment. Most of all, I think attendees will be amazed at the speed and athleticism of the athletes. They make the twists, turns, and jumps look effortless.” About Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel

Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel is nestled at the foot of the majestic Allegany Mountains along the New York/Pennsylvania border and is located off exit 20 of the Interstate 86 near U.S. Route 219. The property is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year. Guests can enjoy 2,000 slot machines and 33 table games, seven dining locations, live entertainment and a AAA Four Diamond Award-winning hotel with 413 recently-renovated or brandnew deluxe hotel rooms, a spa and salon, fitness center and indoor pool.
