EDITOR’S LETTER February is the month of love and since the temperatures remain at a lull and the days seems darker, this means naturally we’re going to be staying in a bit more, where backyard BBQs were a regular occurrence and late nights out were the norm, now, our evenings seem to be more about fluffy socks and binge-watching tv series. But, having a good time doesn’t have to be a thing of the past, in fact, it’s the perfect excuse to gather your favourite girls and host a little girly night in at home. Sharing is caring! When entertaining, I like to keep things simple (because really, who has time for elaborate planning and prepping?!). Food is definitely the way to anyone’s heart, therefore, stocking up on the snacks is a sure win for an easy girls night. If your friends are anything like mine, a good selection of snacks is a must for any get together. I’m a big believer that you can’t go wrong with a cheese plate and they’re super easy to throw together (while still being totally #Instagram worthy!) – grab a mix of hard and soft cheeses, or ask everyone to bring their faves. Speaking of favourites why don’t you set a theme for the evening and have your friends bring over favourites to swap, from nail polish colours, to recent reads or song recommendations. It’ll be a fun way to discover something new and will stimulate some really interesting conversation throughout the night. Of course, we’re always here to feed your luxurious soul and this month is no different. From our exclusive interview with shoe designer Hissa Haddad, remarkable getaways alongside a selection of the hottest fashion and beauty trends, we really are your editorial cupid.

R
ed is a vibrant, powerful, fiery, fast, stimulating, and devious colour. It can express self-confidence or just subtle blushing. It’s utterly contradictory and has polarising effects and meanings. It’s the colour of both cupid and the devil. The colour of love and hate. It can represent hot-blooded anger or the scarlet letter of shame. It strikes a chord with many cultures. It means good luck in China, where brides wear red coloured gowns, bad luck and mourning in parts of Africa, purity and integrity in India, and it’s represented in the red-light district in Amsterdam. red is a cultural contextual colour due to its intensity and passion. Some see innocence or danger, pain, attraction or beauty. It can be happy, honorable or brave. It can also represent life, fertility and love. Red in makeup or fabrics enhances an individual’s attractiveness because it is emotive and eye – catching. It catches the eye. Artists have used it in their art due to its symbolic significance to various cultures. It causes emotional reactions in all of us, which is why retailers use it to stimulate people to make quick buying decisions, thus the retailer’s “Sale” signs with offers too good to pass by! Lessons of the colour red aside, this month we take a moment to celebrate the colour red in representing the wonderful bond that is love. A bond that runs through our veins which was delivered by the woman. The nurturer of humanity. She is valued, loved and essential to civilization. She plays a critical role in society often without realizing it. She delegates, manages, invests, implements and forms our society’s future development with little or no acknowledgement, but this doesn’t hold her down. As you are reading this, you maybe nodding your head. You are one of these great human beings who is to be celebrated. The mother of yesterday, today and of tomorrow. Hold your head up high, without you, they couldn’t have done it without you! So we celebrate you, the woman who cares for everyone in the family and is often taken for granted, you are meeting your duty. But most importantly, you must not neglect yourself in these important roles you play so selflessly. What we offer we at JK Fashion Indulgence is the means to make your presentation routines run efficiently in all aspects of your lifestyle. We make you stand out which is not always easy to on your own. What category of presentation are you? What do your clothes say about you? How do you dress when you present yourself to the world? What’s hindering the changes you want in your life? What does your accessories say about you? A messy wardrobe equals a messy start of the day. Impulse buying equals wasting money and time. Poor judgement in what you wear can create missed opportunities. Maybe there’s a special event you are planning and you can’t make a decision on your style. We are here to make this process easier and professionally enhanced. I am writing this article to remind us all, we do have places to go, things to achieve and we need to reward ourselves through these processes. You want to make yourself look the best. You deserve rubies from all those around you but you have to be befitting them. Let JK Fashion Indulgence show you how. In support of this, go out and party wearing something red! Or better yet join us on 11th of Feb, 2018 at Shanghai Club in Shangri-La Hotel,Doha, for an evening you will not forget. Fitting in is important but to stand out as you, is awesome. Thank you all for joining us in the celebration of red because on this occasion our meaning of red is LOVE. Love for the people in our lives, the things we done and the things we still want to do. The Love of the woman and the limitless power women possess. For more information, call: +974 5581 0238 about.u@jkfindulgence.com, www.jkfindulgence.com, @jkfindulgence

ABOUT NOORA AL-ANSARI Noora Al Ansari, a proud Qatari, holds a Master degree in English and Literature and has an MBA in Business. When visiting a jewellery fair Noora felt compelled by the jewellery world and desired to possess all kinds of jewels herself. Somehow, she felt moved by the purity of precious stones and became inspired by their delicacy. A feeling of freedom and joy runs through her heart when she is surrounded by jewels. She gained a new sense of appreciation towards jewellery; her vision changed completely from this moment onwards. Her desire to see the jewels, to be able to touch them and to understand the composition of each precious stone; is the reason why she decided to launch her own jewellery business in Doha. She has created a unique which is innovative following the current trends in the market. Her favourite stone is diamond but the collections that Papillon offers are produced with many kinds of gold, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, pearls and a variety of semi-precious stones. Some modern and fresh designs use leather and enamel in their composition too. The last project of Noora Al-Ansari consists of very innovative yet interchangeable pieces. Functional to use differently in every situation or at any moment of the day! 46

INSPIRATION “Papillon” means butterfly in French and it is the symbol of the boutique logo. The spirit of Noora is expressed in every detail of the store: The green colour represents a peaceful garden that invites to relax under the sunlight, symbolised by the beige and gold colours. In her inspiration, the owner invites clients to walk in her jewellery and to experience the feeling of her beautiful collection. Each jewellery piece becomes a flower and the clients represent the butterflies flying freely from one flower to another. The interior is surrounded with mirrors to reflect the client’s beauty; simulating the butterflies flying above the water. When a lady purchases a piece of jewellery at Papillon, she finds a piece of her own secret self... or garden.
COLLECTIONS The Papillon Jewelry has suppliers that work only with high quality diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones. There are many collections designed by Noora Al Ansari like the Papillon collection, or the signature one, that is inspired by the big rings. She works with leading Italian designers in order to create specific pieces signed with the Papillon signature and adapted to both international and Qatari taste.
Papillon Collection Representing the identity and the concept of the brand name whist reflecting the luxurious at the same time. By combining fine diamonds and pearls with precious stones in varied colours, the goldsmith represents different shapes and sizes of beautiful butterflies in white gold.
Signature collection Using the brilliant and baguette cut diamonds following a circular round pattern in every product of the set. Available in yellow and rose gold, it is an elegant, sophisticated series of pendant, earring, bracelet and ring.
Each jewellery piece becomes a flower and the clients represent the butterflies flying freely from one flower to another.
Royal collection Born in the heart of India, it is inspired in the Maharaja and the classic designs that were first created for the royal families in Europe. Pearls, precious rubies, sapphires and emerald stones are set in a significant position as the main part of the design surrounded by sparkling high quality diamonds of different cuts arranged in a classic sophisticated way.
Firenze Italia Collection Inspired by the beautiful city of Florence, considered the center of the medieval European trade and finance; and birthplace of the Renaissance. It is known that Italy contributed significantly to today’s jewellery fashion, therefore, paying tribute to the Middle Ages inspires its pieces in the artists and the culture of the capital of Tuscany.
Elegant Everyday As the name says, this collection is made for their female customers who want to look elegant all day long whether it is for work, to meet friends or to go out casual.
Omani Jewelry Collection Following the “savoir-faire” of Papillon Jewelry, this is created by specialised craftsmen who are real Omani artisan goldsmiths. Their knowledge in the traditional Mishawaka and Majilya pieces and their expertised ability to combine silver, gold and precious stones result in a selection of necklaces, earrings, bangles and rings very rich in detail and beauty. www.ohlala-magazine.com

REDEFINING LUXURY
David Webb to debut one-of-a-kind cross river bracelet at Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition 2018
The latest creation features 37 pear and marquise-cut diamonds and 34 cabochon emeralds, iconic of David Webb design, set in platinum. Founded in New York in 1948, David Webb is an iconic, high-
luxury jewellery brand that has consistently redefined luxury jewellery with its bold and unique designs. Hand hammered gold work, colorful enamel, and signature animal pieces distinguish David Webb jewels, which are highly sought by leading tastemakers and style icons. The American jewellery House of David Webb will celebrate its 5th year at Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition, February 21st – February 26th, with the debut of an exquisite one-of-a-kind bracelet from the Cross River Collection. The latest creation features pear and marquise-cut diamonds (37 carats) and cabochon emeralds (34 carats), iconic of David Webb design, set in platinum. The design of the Cross River bracelet was originally created by David Webb in the mid-1960s, but DWJE will mark the first time the bracelet has been realised by the David Webb master artisans in its New York City atelier. David Webb will also present its new Motif Collection for the first time in the region. Originally conceived by David Webb in the 1970’s, the Motif Collection is a continuation of the company’s singular voice and dynamic sense of optimism. Through the use of line and form, David Webb created a distinct vernacular in the 1970’s modernizing art deco motifs. With Motif, the house celebrates the contemporary woman through strong design. The 18K gold, white diamonds,

and black and white enamel are indicative of the forthright elegance that made David Webb the quintessential American jeweller. However, this collection singles out and scales down the design, evolving into jewellery that is easy to wear and youthful for the contemporary customer. “We’re thrilled to continue to revive David Webb’s inimitable idiom,” says Mark Emanuel, the company’s co-owner. “By bringing back the Motif Collection, we’re offering something charming and light while keeping the aesthetic thumb-print that has continued to make David Webb revolutionary and enticing to women across the world.” The Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) will take place between 21 and 26 February at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC). The six-day event is open to the public and will feature more than 400 brands bringing an extensive display of classic and contemporary luxury collections by internationallyrecognised brands and designers. issa, your collection is as opulent as ever. What has inspired your new Capsule collection? The main inspiration for this collection is jewellery - hair pieces to be specific. This links to my first collection but it has naturally evolved itself to be different. For instance, my first collection showcases a series of scattered jewels whereas hair pieces and their embellishments are more close together. Women can wear my Capsule collection to be glamorous at any time of the day - not necessarily for a formal event only. What kind of aesthetic do you aim to set for your collections in general? I want the lady to feel that she is wearing a piece of jewellery on her feet. Most ladies in the GCC wear abayas that can be quite plain therefore there is an element of style that can be expressed only through this medium. Extending to Europe and the Capsule collection embodies itself as highly chic complimenting outfits with minimalistic detail. Feel more confident and let the shoes do the talking! How do you ensure comfort in your decadent footwear? The comfort is maintained by ensuring the correct angle and distance between the heel and toe. We have also made the shoes a wider fit and used an insole to make them more comfortable. I collated a lot of research that evolve and be inevitably more comfortable alongside adding additional value to the company. Studies from being an engineer have assisted in my vision to provide maximum comfort. We are in love with the embellishments you provide in your collection. How involved are you in the creative process from start to finish? I am involved in every stage from creating the mood board to finalising the design. I create the mood board incorporating some sketches and detailing before I submit to my designer based in UK, to assist with the technicalities of the embellishments and materials. I worked alongside the manufacturer and completed about 10 trials for my second Capsule collection producing a total of three designs - only the best have been produced for this collection. Hair jewellery is the inspiration behind the embellishment and we have incorporated a strong casting so that the embellishments won’t fall. Everything is handcrafted, each shoe is uniquely created with love and an intricately meticulous design. How have you prepared for your impending launch at London Fashion Week 2018? They key is researching the perfect place to showcase my brand for press and buyers. Finding the best PR agency to bring in crowd and to display the vision takes a lot of time to build trust and for them to engage with my vision. Respect is key. What is it like to put a show together? It is imperative to plan together with your PR team well in advance. I must admit it is stressful in the build up towards a show, however, from the moment I travel to said show the panic is over. I’m eerily calm as everything that has been done has been done. It’s important to enjoy the show, soak up these moments and to not over stress. What do you love and hate most about Fashion Weeks? Fashion weeks are an excellent opportunity to meet with people and be inspired by the creativity shown. There is nothing that I hate about it except how quick they seem to pass. What do you love about the fashion scene in the Middle East? How it mixes between different cultures. It has been affected by the western style and elegance, yet it has never lost its originality within its unique eastern style. Are there any other places in the world where the fashion makes your heart beat faster? Russia & India. Russia is home to a whole host of amazing brands and quality within 52
www.ohlala-magazine.com
individual detailing. You can see the uplift in elegance and fashion design across social media which is something we haven’t seen before. Russian women certainly know how to overlay and are fashionistas in their own right! Strong colours and other detailing draws my heart to India. They showcase a huge amount of sparkle and they aren’t afraid of bold colours and detail. Huge contrasting colours that ‘technically’ shouldn’t work, do and the colours complement their skintone beautifully. Everything feels positively over-the-top and I’ inspired by their traditional dresses which I find uplifting. India never fails to put me in a positive vibe. Are there any designers whose careers you follow and are continuously in awe of? I am inspired by every fashion success story, no specific designer but the experience each one has been through. Each story inspires me to work harder. Everybody’s story is unique, may that be high-street fashion or high-end. I’m inspired from the story behind the brand. QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

HEALTH Files
PALLAVI PATAL, Spa Manager at SPA BY CLARINS IN MARSA MALAZ KEMPINSKI shares with us the perspective of being happy with oneself and the positive outcome that it has.
V
alentine’s Day is an interesting time for all of us. Some of us are super happy and in love, some of us are lonely; some of us just want to eat ice cream and watch The Notebook. Whatever your flavour is for Valentine’s Day, I invite you to consider that this is actually the perfect time to fall in love with yourself. The idea of “self love” can seem rather cosmic, narcissistic and alien to some of us. But it’s essential if we want a fulfilling relationship with others. The first and most important part of it is to know that we need to accept and love ourselves before we can truly accept others and love then unconditionally. Positive affirmations play a major role in reassuring your selfworth. Many of us are conditioned from an early age to be self-critical, or we have low self-esteem because we don’t look ‘attractive’ enough or are some way not “good” enough. MAKE A LIST OF 10 THINGS YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF EVERYDAY This might sound a bit corny, but trust me it works. If you aren’t used to focusing on what you love then you need to practice it just like you would any new exercise. Practice creates a habit so it is important that you make this a daily thing. You can focus on external or internal things; anything your heart desires. The most important part is that you do it consistently. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION Self-love benefits your health as well as your relationships. Practicing mindfulness and meditation helps us to realise how incredible our body is and developing a healthy relationship with ourselves is one of the most precious gifts of love we can give ourselves. Meditation has been proven in many studies to have wide-ranging physical and emotional benefits, including studies which showed that meditation reduced the risk of stroke, heart attack and death in high-risk individuals by 48 per cent. LOVE YOUR BODY AND BE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR SKIN Work on getting healthier and indulge in wellness. You
will always be a work in progress, continue to transform yourself- movement is life. Jumpstart your journey to wellness with physical activity; exercise is about as close as you will ever get to finding the fountain of youth. Use it as a tool to become a healthier, more masterful version of yourself. Find a form of exercise that you enjoy and makes you feel strong. Develop an intuitive nature and find ways to stay active that promote fitness, cultivate friendships, and raise your spirits. Make exercise part of your routine because it builds a healthy body and makes you feel good. You only get one body, it is your most priceless possession, be sure to care for it. Stop beating yourself up every single step of the way, nobody is perfect. It’s fundamental that you learn to love your body no matter what your size or shape; don’t let your physique be an excuse to keep you from participating in activities you enjoy. When life gives you curves flaunt them. How your body feels today, and into the future will largely depend on your daily food choices. You have countless opportunities to head down one path or another on your journey to living a more bountiful and healthy lifestyle. If you’re serious about your well-being it’s time you be completely honest with yourself about what you’re putting in your mouth. Accept responsibility and take the steps needed to solve your dietary problems. No more explanations, no more excuses Positive thoughts and optimism contributes to mental wellbeing -ask your loved ones to share what they love the most about you. Ask them to share what makes you special in their life. Practice just listening and receiving this information without any rebuttal or explanation. Practice being fully present with this person and letting what they are saying sink into your being. Seeing how we are loved through other’s eyes can be really powerful if you let it. So many of us struggle with accepting compliments, but there is nothing wrong with that. Use this opportunity to remember that it is okay to feel special and it is okay to be told you are loved. We are all busy and we want to take care of everyone else, but set an example for those in your life and take time for yourself. On this Valentine’s Day remember that all the love you desire is already inside of you just waiting to be released. It can be a really beautiful journey to fall in love with yourself so take the invitation to love yourself. www.ohlala-magazine.com

THE AGEING FACTOR
The line between ageing gracefully and getting a little help along the way can sometimes seem blurred. Angela Beitz gives the low down on injectables and the important questions to ask before considering these treatments I never thought I would be one to even consider something like botox. After years of being a Beauty Editor and trying a plethora of products and treatments on the market along with every facial known to man I’ve always believed great skin can be achieved with an excellent skincare regime, exercise, a healthy diet and loads of water. The thought of having a substance injected into my face with a needle has never seemed appealing or necessary. But here is the thing - I’m getting older. None of this seems relevant nor is it something we think about in our twenties or even early thirties but the years creep up on us and even with the best skincare the signs of ageing start to appear quickly and rapidly. Probably due to the foreheads and eyes of one too many reality stars or celebrities out there, Botox gets somewhat of a bad rap, but for those in the real world who have tried out the treatment, it’s unlikely that you’ll notice they got anything done. Botox in particular has gotten a bad reputation in the past due to people going totally overboard on it or having it done in correctly. It’s all about moderation, and should be viewed more as maintenance, to look the same, only fresher, rather than a way to look dramatically different. The impacts are more than just aesthetics, especially for those who have excessive sweating and use Botox to deactivate their sweat glands. It seems like people talk about botox all the time, and whether you’re into the idea or not, even just talking about it draws up negative connotations. Of course, it’s not for everybody, and if you don’t feel the need for it, then you can obviously feel free 64
www.ohlala-magazine.com
to pass, but if its something you are interested in or are thinking about it’s good to get the low down on what is exactly is involved. So what is botox and what does it do? Botox is a compound made by bacteria, which is a botulism toxin. That may sound scary, but when used in very controlled doses, the practice is safe. The compound is injected into a specific area, and once inside, it binds itself to receptors in your muscle, affecting the nerves within. So as a result, when your nerve releases a chemical to make that particular muscle fire or trigger, it can’t. The function decreases, and the wrinkle that forms when the muscle contracts will diminish, or go away completely. It’s not a static thing and your body regenerates those receptors over time. The most common places Botox is injected are the crow’s feet around the eye area, creases between the eyes, brow furrows, and in horizontal wrinkles on the forehead. Immediately after getting the treatment, Botox will take anywhere from one to 10 days to kick in, and on average, it lasts about three to four months as that’s the amount of time it takes your body to regenerate new receptors within the muscle. The best thing to do when considering this treatment is to go to someone who is accredited and trusted in the industry. It’s a good idea to make an appointment for a consultation first so that you can talk through it and see exactly what it’s all about. While I might leave the botox for a few more years yet, it’s good to know I have options.

COMMIT TO BE FIT We talk everything health and fitness with Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas’ Recreation Manager, Jamaludine Dolley.
FITNESS TRENDS • Wearable technology such as Polar Heart Rate Monitors, Samsung Gear, Fitbit and iWatch are still as popular as ever. Other technology such as Myzone is also being adopted by fitness clubs, to aid the members in monitoring their fitness levels and get frequent updates on their performance inside the clubs. This improves engagement with the members and our constant need to see fitness related metrics. People are motivated by results. • Functional fitness is still continuing to maintain its relevance year on year. A few years ago, TRX, Vipr and kettlebell training were really popular however now body weight training, High Intensity Interval Training and Calisthenics Training is making a comeback. • Personal Training and Group Exercise Classes has always been go to fitness activities for many people and that hasn’t changed much over the last few years and I believe that trend will continue, however it is about finding the right trainer or class to suit your needs.
FITNESS TIPS • The biggest challenge anyone will ever face with regards to achieving their fitness goals is an ongoing battle with your own mindset. If you are defeated mentally you will not be able to work hard enough nor be consistent in achieving your goals. Work on the mind and your body will follow. A simple way to positively impact your mindset if to remind yourself regularly throughout the day why you are exercising and focus on the desired outcome. If this is done daily you will foster your commitment 68
www.ohlala-magazine.com
which in turn would assist you to achieve your fitness goals. • Another important fitness tip would be to have fun, for most people if you take your fitness routine too seriously you will eventually lose focus, burn yourself out and inevitably stop. Keep it fun and mix it up. Challenge yourself to a new class or learning a new discipline, don’t get into the cycle of making your workout a chore, it should be a pleasure. • Nutrition is key. Do your research about nutrition or seek help from a professional, a healthy balanced diet is essential to reaching your fitness goals.

TRAVEL Escapes “The hotel has an impressive history and it was the first one ever to be built on Hong Kong Island. The quality of service you’ll find at this hotel is beyond impressive and it really puts a lot of other hotels to shame.” Asia’s most glamorous city
has always been home to some of the world’s most glamorous hotels. Upon arrival at the Mandarin Oriental’s flagship hotel in Hong Kong there’s an impressive but warm feeling from the black marble floors and large orchid filled vases and the striking crystal chandeliers still hung from the ceiling. This is a very popular hotel that is always buzzing. The legendary hotel is a home away from home for both seasoned travellers and locals alike. Local business people are often seen here conducting meetings and it’s equally popular with visitors keen for a taste of what this vibrant city has to offer. At the heart of the hotel’s winning philosophy stands a singular focus on service, discretion and comfort and these are the reasons this particular hotel has become a real favourite. The hotel has an impressive history and it was the first one ever to be built on Hong Kong Island. The quality of service you’ll find at this hotel is beyond impressive and it really puts a lot of other hotels to shame. The focus is on creating a warm environment for guests who walk through the doors, leaving them happy and satisfied when they walk out. We are shown to our Harbour Room on the 20th floor where you immediately take in the sweeping view of the harbour that is looking out to Kowloon. The hotel has just over 500 rooms and suites, and the Harbour Room is definitely one of the best options. The décor is sleek but cosy with a gold and cream colour scheme, crisp white linen bed sheets, heavy drapes, wood panelling and gold touches. The bathroom is spacious and impressive with black and white marble, open-plan configuration with a walk-in rain shower and separate bathtub. Products are Hermés and there’s even a television fitted in an oscillating mirror by the sink. Every detail has been well thought out. We also loved the day bed by the large window perfect for sipping a cup of tea or an afternoon aperitif while taking in the view of the junks and ferries and the Hong Kong Observation Wheel. As you would expect, the hotel boasts incredible restaurants for you to choose from. There’s Pierre Gagnaire’s two Michelinstarred French restaurant Pierre; the one-star modern European Mandarin Grill + Bar which is achingly chic, and the one-star Cantonese restaurant Man Wah, where we enjoyed an amazing dinner overlooking the city. There’s also The Krug Room, the only one in the world where progressive gastronomy dishes are paired 76

The spa is a must visit while you are staying at this buzzing property. The space is large and the décor is influenced by 1930’s Shanghai with low light and soothing beige tones. The ninetreatment rooms facility also includes a Chinese herb steam room, a hydrotherapy Kneipp pool with an ice fountain, a tea lounge and experience showers. The spa has an extensive range of treatments including a wide choice of therapies drawing on the philosophies of traditional Chinese medicine. There’s also an indoor pool with piped music you can hear while underwater, a fitness centre with private trainer services and a hair salon. Staying at this property is not like any other hotel, its an experience. Service is top-notch, the rooms are stunning and there are so many delicious restaurants to choose from all in the centre of Hong Kong. OPULENCE IN OMAN As the Grand Millennium Hotel Muscat Launched their Luxury Apartments with Private Pool we ventured over to the ideally located Al Khuwair district of Muscat to enjoy this idyllic getaway
They say good things come to those who wait, and these
highly anticipated apartments at the Grand Millennium Hotel Muscat, spacing from 58 square meters to 320 square meters of luxury living space only concretes this particular coin of phrase. After valet and check-in, my luggage was kindly swept away to my accomodation by a smiling porter and I couldn’t wait to see what furnishings would adorn my four-bedroomed private pool apartment. As I stepped into instagrammable surroundings the feeling of serenity washed over me. I was kindly welcomed with a personalised haven of patisseries fit for a queen, including some butterscotch pastry and strawberry mousse that delicately overwhelmed my taste buds. This new social epicenter is the ideal luxury hotel in Muscat for the sophisticated travellers who like to explore the sights, art, culinary and nightlife scene of this timeless city, especially as there is direct access from their lobby to access the most impressive shopping complex in Oman, Muscat Grand Mall, allowing you to attend to all of your shopping desires. From the outset, it is clear that the staff at Millennium realise that at the foundation of strong, lasting relationships is one of a personal touch alongside a high level of customer service. The sumptuous, two storey apartment is dominated by decadent embellishments and plush carpets. Spectacular window panels allows for the sun to produce a warm shimmering glow over its features. The linen is crisp and palatable to one that desires luxury. Every inch of these elegantly

TRAVEL Escapes designed apartments, built to world-class specifications and stylishly decorated, come complete with living and dining areas, fully fitted kitchens, spacious bathrooms, and individual work and relaxation areas. One of the added bonuses was that each of the bedrooms came with its very own bathroom, meaning that there is no excuse for arguments on who needs to attend first or to question that family member who seems to always ‘hog’ the toiletries. The hotel signature seafood restaurant, Bahriyat, is inspired by local traditions and infused with global herbs to create a unique menu to treat your senses. The decor is cool and allows you to enjoy a stunning setting combining stunning views with a memorable culinary experience. But you don’t have to eat there to solely enjoy the views as the hotel also has a second restaurant,Taybat, offering a lavish buffet of international flavors for breakfast, lunch and dinner boasting contemporary cuisines from around the globe, which is an all-occasion dining venue. There are also an additional two cafes for you to attend to your caffeine fix and whet your sweet tooth adorned with a collection of freshly baked goods. After having a wander around the grounds I ventured back to my room in the soft haze of a food coma, knowing I’d need a good workout the next morning, but longing only for the comfort of my soft bed. I snuggled in and allowed myself to surf the cable TV that features 68 satellite channels before venturing off into a deep slumber. I woke up feeling euphoric, certainly more refreshed than I have been in what seems like an eternity! After enjoying a selection of freshly cut fruit and some hot food from the live cooking stations I made my way downstairs for a much needed workout at Zanta Spa and Wellness Center. Exercise is supposed to be a strenuous ordeal, but I rather dare I say enjoyed my workout with top-of-the-range facilities and with my new years resolution lagging I felt that a few invigorating laps around the pool wouldn’t do me any harm. After a very comfortable steam, and the most relaxing Jacuzzi session ever, I was extremely relaxed and the woes of the working week were but a mere memory. Elucidating about the launch, Martin Cramer, Area General Manager of Grand Millennium Hotel Muscat said, “These apartments are for discerning guests who value an unparalleled service and lifestyle. We are particularly delighted to launch the luxury apartments with private pools as they offers an ideal space for people travelling with their families from around the region looking for private space to relax. It is also a fantastic staycation option for residents and citizens of Oman who want to spend quality time in a luxurious ambience and are strategically located in the Al Khuwair district of Muscat near banks, embassies, beaches and tourist attractions, having all the amenities and facilities one would need.” Now, this is something we most definitely agree on! Whether you visit here for business or for pleasure the service here is impeccable, as you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. From arrival until departure, I felt pampered by the amazing staff and management. From doormen and receptionists to the housekeeping staff and the butlers, everyone is there to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. This is Grand Millennium’s signature service at its best! TEA MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER TWG Tea’s co-founder honestly reveals the story behind her success and how she incorporates tea into her busy lifestyle
What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace? The best career advice I would give is to be patient, and that all good things require time and consideration to mature into something exceptional. In such a competitive and challenging time, its takes a combination of grace, perseverance, a willingness to accept criticism and a sense of humour to succeed as a woman in the workplace. How do you incorporate tea into your lifestyle? I can say tea almost runs in my blood! I get up quite early around 6 am and make myself a cup of strong black tea like our London Breakfast Tea or a single estate tea like Nuwara Eliya or Harmutty to start the day. For lunch, I enjoy a tea-infused salad or smoked salmon at TWG Tea Salon, paired with a lovely green tea like Gyokuro Samurai. For days when I crave the sweeter things in life, my favourites are our tea-infused macarons or a slice of Singapore Surprise paired with a cup of Silver Moon Tea. I try not to 86
www.ohlala-magazine.com
skip meals, but sometimes a busy work schedule can take over. For dinner, I have a light meal with a nice cup of White Night Jasmine Tea to unwind. After all this success, what do you struggle with now? After 10 years in the business, I still struggle with finding the time for myself, whether it be sharing time with friends or getting out for walk. I am constantly on the go and as a working mother, it’s truly important to find the balance between work, home and for myself. Do you think women feel intimidated in business? I feel workplace intimidation isn’t just limited to women, in fact it runs across all genders and nationalities. Intimidation in any business is a prevalent issue, and it is one which bosses or managers should play an active role in breaking down by speaking up for those who can’t. How do you achieve work-life balance? Spending time with family and having work life balance is important to me as we also encourage the same practice within the company to keep

morale high. My family do understand that I must sometimes attend events in the evening and travel for new openings, but when possible I try to reserve evenings and weekends for them. I try to never spend too much time speaking about work when I’m at home. When I get home, we often go straight to the ping pong table to thrash out a few games before dinner, which gives us tons of laughs and relieves any stress which I might have brought home from work! Has your mentality changed since you started working for TWG Tea? Definitely! It’s important to have a very positive support structure, and to always take a step back from any setback so that you can put problems into perspective. I am definitely more flexible and understanding, although I still am rather impatient and detail oriented. But with age and experience, I don’t take setbacks as being insurmountable anymore, but rather as lessons to be learned from. Nothing is worth losing your health over and very often a good night’s sleep will bring a solution to almost any problem! How did you get where you are today, and who/what helped you along the way? From the start I was blessed with a very unique upbringing thanks to my mom who was a teacher and my dad who was a graphic designer. My mom taught me at home since I was a concert violinist from a very young age, and since my dad had his own business, it was only natural for me to grow up wanting to be an entrepreneur. They truly gave me the strength to embrace my passions and lead an exceptional life. I started working in the fragrance industry before moving to communications, and met Taha, my husband (and TWG Tea President, CEO & co-founder) along the way. I’ve always felt that much like perfumes, scent still plays an essential role in creating and appreciating fine teas and have Taha to thank for introducing
me to the fabulous world of tea! What has been the role of luck in your success? I do believe that we were fortunate to have been given the opportunity to build TWG Tea in Singapore when we did, but to transform any lucky draw into a success story, you have to be knowledgeable and put in a lot of hard work to transform an opportunity into a business. We’re thankful to have launched the right product at the right time and in the right place. But having a strong vision, a great team, hard work and attention to detail were the real keys to our success. Tell us about your beauty routine and what you couldn’t live without Beauty starts from within – I drink a lot of water and tea because of its natural antioxidant properties and boost of theine to start the day. I use a light Chanel foundation for the morning, some brightening powder from MAC, a good spritz of Gardenia by Chanel and a dab of Dior lipstick and I’m out the door. At night, I use Skin Inc facial oil – in Singapore, even though it’s so hot and humid, I can get by without a conditioner! But above and beyond the products I use, I try to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night! What is your favourite quote? I admire so many strong women, but dearly love this quote by Maya Angelou: “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” Embracing your difference and making it your strength is the most enriching way to live life! Decadent Delicacies The Four Seasons Hotel Doha served up a taste tour of such grandeur that we never wanted to leave the splendour of Friday Brunch
The Four Seasons Hotel Doha is situated on The Corniche and is nothing short of resplendent. It’s architecture mixes traditional splendour with contemporary brilliance. The views from the hotel itself encompass the luxuriant elegance of the beach area through to the incredible Marina entrance with a structure mimicking the smooth lines of a grand yacht. The décor as you enter exudes opulence and draws the eye first in one direction towards the likes of a beautiful, fresh, floral display, suspended from the ceiling and then across the lobby to a lone, sultry , piano framed on all sides by beautiful polished marble pillars. This certainly sets the scene for what is best described as a walking tour of gastronomy during which one happens upon one delicious morsel after another. The title ‘Friday Brunch’ simply doesn’t suffice. My dining companion and I were greeted by Christopher Jordan, Director of Restaurants, who afforded us the complement of a tour of the brunch with one of their hostesses. The grandeur of the lobby is mirrored throughout the public areas . Many lead outside and offer shaded views of the beautiful grounds and beach beyond. Brunch itself compromised numerous live cooking stations producing a variety of cuisines from around the globe. Chef Sumandiara an ‘Itamae’ wowed me with his freshly prepared sushi. From the precision and delicacy of Japan I was whisked to the Amalfi coast by Chef Marco and his hedonistic ragus which drenched the perfectly al dente pasta . It came as no surprise to me to discover that the majority of raw ingredients are made in house by the Chef ’s preparing brunch. Bubbles were the order of the day to compliment the array of dishes. The superb hosts ensured that my glass was refreshed with pink, sparkling bubbles regularly. A friend had later chastised me for not trying the Tom Yum-tini which is one of the signature cocktails offered at the bar. Expert mixologists are at hand to whip up any concoction desired by diners. The dining area in which we were seated is a triumph of the philosophy of bringing the outside inside. The grey and orange décor is punctuated with Alice in Wonderland style oversized lamps which serve as heaters when the weather dictates it necessary. Whilst being shady and elegant , the open trellises invite the eyes to explore the gardens and greenery beyond. Indeed many of the cooking and serving stations are situated outside. It became somewhat of a culinary treasure hunt as we discovered something more delicious around each corner or in each nook and cranny of the hotel. Fresh salads, charcuterie, Asian – fusion and a variety of freshly prepared grilled meats could not fail to satisfy all tastes and cravings. The hotel obviously puts a great deal of thought into staging
the serving stations and stalls. My particular favourite was the converted fishing boat complete with fishing net , it’s blue and white paintwork transporting me to a bay somewhere on Mykonos. Close by vibrant Mexican tacos were being prepared amidst agave plants and spiky cactuses. It is often suggested that we ‘See ‘ the flavour of foods before we taste them which has not been missed by the experience offered at the Four Seasons. As we moved inside the Foie Gras stand boasted Hazelnut Brioche as an accompaniment to the rich creaminess of the French delicacy. One might expect such a bountiful array of cuisines to dull the attention to finer details or quality but this was clearly not the case. My male companion was particularly pleased with the fact that the brunch offered an enviably vast range of cheeses and desserts. The desserts are displayed like beautiful ornaments to be admired before they are devoured. Some of the tradition Arabic sweets and cakes were piled high as they would be traditionally in the souks and markets . Light cascades into the dining area, yet another triumph of bringing outside inside, making the sweet chocolate shawarma and glistening chocolate fountain look even more indulgent. A whole room is dedicated to the selection of cheeses the hotel offers. I am a self-confessed fromage aficionado and I can liken it only to an Aladdin’s Cave for someone like me offering everything from creamy bries to intense blues with a lingering aftertaste. I would not hesitate to describe the Four Seasons Brunch as the most brilliant assault on the senses. The thoughtful presentation afforded in the form of the serving stations and the exquisite décor did not detract from the fabulous aromas and showmanship from the Chef ’s but rather transported it to a level which is second to none in Doha. The quality of the dishes was far beyond anything I have come to expect on a brunch menu and couple this with the extraordinary assemblage of cuisines and you have a truly unforgettable Friday dining experience.

THE YEAR OF THE DOG Hakkasan Chefs from around the world create an exclusive menu to Celebrate Chinese New Year 2018
H
akkasan, the brand known for its modern interpretation of authentic Cantonese cuisine, will usher in the Chinese New Year with festive celebrations commemorating 2018 as The Year of the Dog. Upholding the brand’s proud Chinese heritage, Hakkasan Doha will welcome the new lunar year with a limited edition signature menu created by Hakkasan chefs from London, USA, the Middle East and Asia. This year, Chinese New Year falls on Friday 16th February 2018. In the spirit of celebration, the exclusive menu will be available at Hakkasan Doha from 29th January to 4th March 2018. Guests opting for the menu will enjoy dishes using ingredients which are thought to bestow happiness, longevity, luck and prosperity. Starting with Szechuan wind dried oyster with lotus root with crispy rice in man tou, the oyster traditionally symbolising fortune and good luck. Other small eat dishes include braised beef and caramelized walnut with asparagus and mint. Main dishes include Grilled Chilean sea bass with kumquat glaze, as eating fish at Chinese New Year is said to bring increased prosperity, plus Wokfry native lobster in superior stock with edamame and caviar and Rhug estate organic lamb in seaweed soy with celery and enoki mushroom. To complete the main course dishes, Abalone fried rice in bean curd wrap with mushroom which contains fai cai (fat choy), an ingredient which in Chinese means to ‘get rich and grow wealth’. To finish, guests will indulge in the Golden Fortune dessert with ginger caramel, roasted macadamia nuts and lemongrass. In addition a series of exclusive drinks will be available including Xingyun, a mix of mandarin and lemon juice, spice mandarin jam, passion fruit and soda water, garnished with a fortune cookie. As part of the festivities, Hakkasan will continue their annual Chinese New Year wishing tradition by inviting guests to write their wishes on red ribbons that will be hung around the dining areas. This custom is said to have begun hundreds of years ago in Lam Tsuen, Hong Kong. During Chinese New Year, villagers would travel for miles to visit the sacred Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees (two ancient banyan trees) and hang notes on the branches using red ribbon. These notes contained wishes for the year ahead and it was believed that the wishes that were successfully hung on the trees would come true. Executive Head Chef Tong comments, “Chinese New Year is an incredibly important time for Hakkasan and our guests. Each year we look for new ways to celebrate in the restaurants around the world through food and traditions. This year, I wanted to bring together our chefs as this time of year traditionally brings together family and friends. I am very proud of them and what we have achieved together with this menu. Here’s to a happy and prosperous 2018!” For more information, please call +974 444 60170 / reservation.hakkasan@stregis.com www.hakkasan.com

MISS Ohlala
HOUSE OF CLEAN NEEDING A LITTLE INSPIRATION FOR UPDATING YOUR ABODE? MISS OHLALA HAS SOME NIFTY IDEAS TO GIVE YOUR HOME A SPRING MAKEOVER If you’re anything like me, whilst the weather is cold and foggy outside, your thoughts turn to home redecoration. Here are some ideas for some quick fixes that won’t break the bank. Rather than waiting for someone else to buy them for you, buy yourself flowers for your entrance hallway. Yellow and purple are cheery spring colours that will make you smile every time you come home. Fill your home with beautiful scented candles. Jo Malone and Diptyque are the bee’s knees but Bath & Body Works have some lovely, affordable options. The downside is that they encourage my three year old to sing Happy Birthday on repeat, whilst running round the house blowing them all out. Make one room your sanctuary for the year. For me, that’s a room where I can read, paint, craft or peruse the internet in peace. Go bold and paint the room (or one accent wall) a bold, fresh colour. Organise the room so that you don’t struggle to find a phone charger or somewhere to put down a mug. I gave myself stripy pink smartphone charging cables for Christmas to avoid anyone else borrowing them “by mistake”. Often all a room requires for a quick refresh is decluttering, furniture rearranging and a fresh injection of colour. Decluttering is an instant makeover. Pack away trinkets and home accessories to clear surfaces and then reorganise your rooms. If redecorating a whole room is overwhelming, consider just replacing cushions or throws. Or take a trip to Sharjah to purchase yourself some beautiful carpets from the souk. Add a statement mirror. Strategic placement of mirrors can add more natural light to your home. In addition to bouncing light, if hung correctly it makes a small room appear larger. Reinvigorate your walls with new artworks. If you can’t find any you like in local galleries, consider creating your own in a pop up painting course, 98
www.ohlala-magazine.com
which is the new trend in London. Alternatively get your travel or family photos enlarged and printed onto canvas. A wall of photos displayed in black photo frames of different shapes and sizes looks very appealing. Paint your front door (if permitted obviously). I’m currently debating between Farrow & Ball Pink Ground and Studio Green. This can make a dramatic enhancement to the look of your home and is a welcome change for guests and neighbours. Consider donating books you’ve read to charity. Whilst I personally find it difficult to relinquish my book collection, I appreciate that times are changing. A home library was once a vital domestic resource of knowledge that couldn’t be accessed any other way. I remember pouring over volumes of encyclopaedias that were almost as big as me to complete my school homework. But now that space is is at a premium and we can access reading materials, music and film digitally, it does raise the question why we keep hard copies. Whilst refreshing interior décor, remember to follow the three R’s to make a small contribution to saving our planet: refurbish, repaint, recycle. Your home will never look better.
