Editor’s Letter

, Tis the

Season It’s already that time of year again! The festive season is well and truly upon us, and December is full of events across the island to get you into that Holiday vibe. Just browse through our dining and society pages for ideas on where to go and what to do, which is sure to keep your social calendar chock-a-block ‘til the end of the year! The festive season is also a time for giving and while you’re busy out shopping, and running up those credit cards for gifts for family and friends, it’s a good time to stop and on the island that you can either donate your time, gifts or money too, so why not give back to the community in which you live. One such charity is the Regional Institute of Active Learning (RIA), which you can read all about in our The Cause section in an interview with Christine Gordon, the student director. Fill your days with little ways of giving back to vitalise your inner joy. Something as simple as a smile to a stranger can spread the energy of giving, or perhaps a kind word, or a helping hand. Not only will it bring the other some welcome support, but it will lead to a warming inner glow that will only continue to expand, as the more love you give out, the more you get back. Namaste. THE CAUSE

I

n 1999, a unique institute RIA was created in Bahrain, who dedicated themselves to the educational needs of autistic children. Started by Christine Gordon and her husband Dr Emad Al Attar RIA, or the Regional Institute of Active Learning, has since expanded its horizons to include students with other learning RIA provides basic nursery level education and a learning environment keeping in mind the child’s unique physical, emotional and educational needs with the aim to develop the skills that can later help them when they go to ‘bigger’ schools. Christine expresses how essential it is to let children with disabilities experience activities which all other children of their age do. Hence, she includes the children in all the activities with the aim to give them access to something they don’t normally get. Some of the activities the kids are exposed to are daily Brain Gym, Music and Movement classes where every student is encouraged to take part. On the academic front, students are taught the basics of normal British or Bahrain Government System education with English or Arabic, Maths, Social Studies, Environment Studies, Computer Studies, Art and Craft, Music, Cookery, ‘Land Life’ skills, in an ageappropriate manner. To raise funds for the institute, Christine tells me that there’s a lot of ‘chasing’ involved, mainly after people whom they fundraisers, with the recent one being a Gala Dinner. “I had to pinch myself, I did not expect to get such a positive and huge response, it amazes me how people are willing to support us. People are good! They are happy when they can help,” she enthused. For his part, Naji, RIA’s Administration Manager, spoke about their upcoming event for the kids, which is taking place at The British Club this month. “It’s not necessarily a fundraiser. We want our kids to have access to what others schools do. For instance, every school has a talent production of some sort onstage, i.e. a poetry recital or traditional dancing; so why shouldn’t our kids have that? Is it because some of them have special needs 36

OHLALA! DECEMBER 2013

EDUCATION FOR ALL With an aim to promote awareness and a mission to educate children with physical and mental disabilities, ria has created a learning path and managed to bring together various nationalitiesand cultures. Christine Gordon and naji Salama chat with ohlala’s pallavi ramesh to share their story about the institute’s remarkable journey. and they’re not capable of such? Of course not! They can do and very well if I may add.” So we’re going to produce a show where the kids will be donning fancy costumes. The kids will have the chance to show off their talents onstage while their parents get to watch and enjoy their performances. One of RIA’s major supporters, The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, Hotel & Spa, has, since 2006, been an integral support system for the institute in different areas. Christine exclaims: “In my eyes, it’s huge when The Ritz-Carlton says, ‘We are adopting you.’”. It’s like having a big sister by your side who is just a call away!”

The Ritz-Carlton provides RIA financial help when required and also helps them with maintenance requirements such as repairs and painting at the institute. They conduct social events for kids such as swimming at the hotel – just one of the activities done regularly to help raise awareness about children with disabilities which in turn helps RIA to flourish as an institution. Naji reaches out to readers with this message: “As members of society, we need to really think about people with physical and mental disabilities. We need to give them a voice. We need to listen to them.” www.ohlala-magazine.com

In the Far East, a tea house is a casual place for people to meet up to have a nice cup of tea or drink and some simple tasty food,” explains Weena. More a tea drinker than a coffee lover, Weena tells me that, “Every morning, I will have my nice cup of tea to start with. It makes me feel refreshed. remember being both impressed and surprised to discover that the singer, Katie Melua, who had suddenly come

number one in many regions around the world and a series of hit albums followed that led to her becoming one of the most successful artists of the new millennium and a household name. Ten years on and a lot has changed for the young artist originally from Georgia, who celebrates a decade in the business with the launch of her latest album, Ketevan, released – she assures me by coincidence – on her birthday! So if that wasn’t planned, was there something behind the title? “It’s my Georgian name! I was born Ketevan Melua. I thought it would be pertinent as a bit of a retrospective. Although I’ve been a British citizen for many years now, I have never forgotten my Georgian roots and with so many family members still there, it just felt right to make some kind of big gesture by documenting that fact. It’s also a small step back to songwriting for me with my long time collaborator Mike Batt and an “It’s a very personal album for me and though it contains a sound that many of my fans will recognise, at the same time I’ve tried to give this an upbeat and alternative sound.” “I know that historically I may have been associated with ballads or a more melancholy theme but in general I am quite a happy person and I think Ketevan does illustrate that fact.” With a tour planned to support the album later in the year I wondered whether a decade of promotion and live performances had diminished her enthusiasm at all? “Quite the opposite if anything,” she declares. “I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do with my music and I have never forgotten that. I came from fairly humble beginnings in Georgia and I know how fortunate I have been in my life. To step out on stage and connect with your audience is still the most thrilling feeling. There you are performing material that people can relate to and it is the most personal, rewarding and in some ways, humbling experience. I would never want to give up on touring. It’s the closest you can get to your fans.” “I’ve also got such a brilliant band supporting me when I go out on stage. They are like my second family. They support me and I rely on them when I am performing.” “I think the biggest key for me is the hunger; that desire to demonstrate I still have something to say. HAVING REACHED THE PINNACLE OF SUCCESS, DAMIAN D’COSTA – EVENT PLANNER, DJ AND RECORD PRODUCER, TALKS TO OHLALA! AND SHARES HIS JOURNEY, CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND FUTURE ENDEAVOURS. How did you get your start as a DJ? Damian D’Costa: Coming from a family with a musical background was a gift, so by the age of twelve I was playing bass guitar in my self-formed band. But my move towards being a DJ happened at a certain gig where my band played. The excitement and reaction of the crowd upon the arrival of the DJ was shocking and this prompted me to eventually speak to the DJ. I realised then that I was on the wrong side of the industry. So, I bought a DJ’s secondhand equipment and practiced all day. From thereon, I became the school’s resident party DJ which led to a lot of gigs. With my passion and hard work I rapidly became a popular DJ. There was no looking back after that and … here I am. You are the founder of ‘Eventions’, an event management company in the island. Tell us how did this happen? DDC: I always put a personal touch to an event, whether it is a private party or a hotel gig. People approached me to for advice related to their parties, this led me to organising my own parties and events. So with my marketing education from the London School of Management and musical skills, I became an event organiser! ‘Eventions’ was born in 2009, with myself as founder of the up any corporate or commercial event we come across!

88

OHLALA! DECEMBER 2013

What major contributions have you made to the club scene of Bahrain? DDC: My biggest achievement to date was creating the lounge/club how my work has somehow inspired some fabulous lounges across the island to date. Can you tell us a little about Casa D’Costa Recordings, your record label? DDC: I teamed up with a friend from The Netherlands, Coll Selini, to develop the brand. Casa D’Costa Recordings has been releasing productions from both professional and up-coming DJs and producers across the logue of track releases for sale online on Beatport, Traxsource, iTunes, Amazon music, etc. Any message for aspiring DJs? DDC: Technology is moving fast these days, so embrace it! I have seen too many DJs die out due to the ignorance of this. Production also plays a major role these days, you may never make that hit but it’s so worth it to understand what you are playing and remember, the more you’re into it… the more opportunities (and money) will eventually come.
