BALLY AW2021
Editor’s Letter We are celebrating 200 issues, a milestone for any publication out there, and we are very proud of our story and how far we’ve come. To commemorate in style, we created a magazine with 200 pages and put together a retrospective showcasing some of our past covers and inside spreads (pg90). It is also the start of a new year – 365 days to do whatever you feel like. You might choose to learn a new skill, spend more time doing the things you enjoy or change your life completely. New beginnings are filled with hope, enjoy this feeling and nurture it with patience and resilience. The number 22 inspired us to compile lists with places to travel, things to learn, books, podcasts and traditional dishes from around the world for you to try (pg74). Embrace the fashion trends you love the most. Get inspired by our style picks, from warm coats to Pantone’s colour of the year (pg18). Delicate jewellery inspired by lace and eye-catching creations paying homage to the most stunning birds in the world embellish our Jewellery Edit pages (pg46). We also bring beautiful eye make-up (pg54) and a unique way to always carry your favourite scent with you (pg56). The pampering treatment we highlight this month at Dessange is all about improving your body shape combining the right workout and spa treatments, a must-try for those looking to transform their bodies (pg66). Our homes are our sanctuaries, and they represent an extension of ourselves with elements that reflect our personalities. We present the top décor trends of 2022 to help you select what will work for you (pg124). We also explore the flavours at re/ASIAN Cuisine (pg148), the starry kitchen of Tala Bashmi at Fusions by Tala (pg152) and Clay (156). Plus, we start the year driving two exceptional cars (pg174). As you can see, we’ve been busy! We hope you enjoy this special edition.

1. Blazers are a way of adding a business vibe to your casual bottoms. If teamed up with striking pumps, the look can go from office to a fancy dinner. Celine has a beautiful blazer collection this season.
6
2. Long shirts, T-shirts and mini dresses are great picks for a casual look. You can finalise the outfit with trendy white trainers and a denim jacket. Opt for this Kenzo olive green mini dress. 3. Combat boots are best paired with tight trousers, so they are a stylish footwear pick to go with your leggings. These are from DSquared2. 4. Puffer jackets are comfy and warm and, when the cool breeze hits, they're all you want to wear. Bringing volume on top when wearing tight trousers is a fashion trick to balance your look. This unisex warmer is from Karl Lagerfeld. 5. Classic and elegant, the trench coat adds some pizzazz to your relaxed style. Complement the look with some high-heeled boots and conquer the world. This iconic item is from Burberry at Farfetch. 6. Wear your leggings with a biker jacket for a bold and rebel-without-a-cause approach. Are you looking for a feminine evening look? Pair with high heels. But if you want a laid-back style, opt for eye-catching trainers. We got inspired by Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley’s timeless style. 30

Hear Me ROAR Michael Kors’ 2022 Lunar New Year campaign celebrates the Year of the Tiger in bold fashion.
ccording to the Chinese Zodiac, 2022 is the Year of the Tiger and Michael Kors created the 2022 Lunar New Year campaign to mark the new cycle. The tradition says that the Year of the Tiger honours the courageous, ambitious, daring, enthusiastic and generous. This year’s campaign has a special tiger motif designed exclusively for Michael Kors by Chinese illustrator Ji WeiRan. Featuring striking brushstrokes and rich colours, the tiger is seen as the backdrop of especially curated Lunar New Year products throughout the
campaign. From the Greenwich crossbody bag rendered in an all-over sequin Signature logo design to matching slingback shoes. The Signature logo Hamilton bag comes with red trim and golden details. Red, black and rose are the chosen colours to paint this celebratory collection. The edit has everything you need to ring in the New Year in style. Ji WeiRan has previously collaborated with the Michael Kors brand, appearing in the first-ever MK My Way campaign in 2020. Ji WeiRan’s tiger design can be found throughout the 2022 Lunar New Year campaign and brought to life in animated videos.

nfusing Middle Eastern elements into her collections, Meera Toukan creates original accessories for a contemporary and cultural style. She started her brand in 2014 when she was a student and witnessed the impact of social media on fashion. This realisation motivated her to create a streetwear brand after her name, printing emojis and slogans onto hoodies, T-shirts and sweaters. Meera has a strong urge to showcase her heritage through fashion. Her designs use the Keffiyeh – the checkered black and white scarf originating from Jordan/Palestine that is mainly worn around the head in the Arab Culture – and Arabic calligraphy meaning peace, love and freedom, all painted in vivid candy hues. Meera’s vision gathers inspiration from the region’s culture and heritage to develop her fashion brand empowering local artisans and workshops. This season, plexiglass clutches handcrafted by artisans in Jordan are the highlight of her collection. @meeratoukan

Founded by Wimbledon champion Fred Perry in 1952, the brand named after the athlete collaborates with the Amy Winehouse Foundation for a unique collection. Rooted in the singer's sportswear and pin-up silhouettes, the collection sees influences from the modernday Fred Perry girl combined with Amy's distinctive style. The singer loved to dress up and this line celebrates the playful side of her style references, drawing specifically on the '60s soul music scene. The capsule is built on a monochrome palette with a checkerboard print used both as subtle detailing and more boldly across sweaters and outerwear. Each piece is signed off with two hearts – a reference to Amy's distinct tattoos. Fred Perry supports the Amy Winehouse Foundation, making contributions to the charity.

The film industry has been reproducing the stories of fashion icons, and luxury jewellery houses have been partnering with them, borrowing eye-catching pieces to portray the characters. Boucheron is featured in the latest release House of Gucci, an adaptation of Sara Gay Forden's The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed (2000). A biopic of the Gucci family dynasty over three decades which looks back at how Maurizio Gucci, the founder's grandson, and Patrizia Reggiani met and how their lives unfolded. In this scenario, Boucheron creations are featured in several scenes. Some of the jewellery pieces include the 31-motif diamond-paved Serpent Bohème necklace in yellow gold; the diamond-paved Pompon necklace in pink gold; the diamond-paved Pompon Serpent Bohème bracelet in yellow gold; and the Cypris bracelet.

Mercedes-Benz and the New York-based fashion label Proenza Schouler partnered to create a collection that brings a new experience in luxury fashion and responsible design. Taking inspiration from travelling and the open road, this limited-edition capsule includes seven gender-neutral styles. Each piece is a study in colour and craftsmanship that reflects the passion of both brands for exquisite materials and outstanding design. Recycled cashmere blankets offered alongside naturally tanned blanket harnesses, showcase Proenza Schouler's take on the iconic Mercedes-Benz star. The knit turtleneck is made from luxurious recycled cashmere and the eco-cotton tie-dye T-shirt is produced using organic and eco-friendly dye methods. The campaign features the actress Laura Dern and her son Ellery Harper. A road trip of a mother and son in an all-electric EQS along the coast builds the dreamy scenery for Mercedes-Benz and Proenza Schouler's capsule collection.

Mulberrry has launched a collection of bags using the world's lowest carbon leather and crafted in the brand's carbon-neutral Somerset factories. The limited-edition capsule is produced in partnership with Muirhead, a member of the Scottish Leather Group. In line with Mulberry's Made to Last Manifesto, announced in 2021, the collection is created in the UK with a pioneering hyper-local, hyper-transparent, farm-to-finished product supply chain model, marking a bold commitment to transparency and traceability. Muirhead produces the world’s lowest carbon intensity leather. This achievement is possible by building close relationships with local farmers, utilising their pioneering thermal energy plant, which generates heat from waste, and maximising green water usage by filtering and recycling 40% of the wastewater back into leather production. This partnership with Muirhead represents the future of Mulberry.
A Designer's Memoir
OSMAN YOUSEFZADA
OSMAN AW2021
Since launching his eponymous label in 2008, Osman Yousefzada has created luxury womenswear with a unique approach. This month, the designer is releasing his first book, The Go-Between: A Portrait of Growing Up Between Different Worlds, offering a window inside the Pakistani/Afghan Pashtun community living in the west. British-born artist and renowned fashion designer Osman tells us about his own family living in a red-light district on the wrong side of the tracks. The stories he writes about, some fantastical, entertaining and funny, others moving and harrowing, take us from Birmingham to the banks of the River Kabul and the River Indus, and, eventually, to the London of Osman's teenage years. As the designer weaves in and out of these worlds, struggling with the burdens of racism and family expectations, he is forced to realise it is no longer possible to exist in the spaces 'in between'.

Emotions Awaken The new collection Sixième Sens Par Cartier illustrates the profound understanding of the emotional power of high jewellery reflected in necklaces and rings.
42
www.ohlala-magazine.com
C
artier’s timeless creations with exceptional artistry have given life to one of its most recognisable pieces, The Love Bracelet, and incredible intrinsic jewels such as Maria Félix’s Crocodile Necklace. Cartier is a responsible jeweller, constantly striving to improve its tradition of excellence and develop its ethical, environmental and social practices and commitments. Sixième Sens Par Cartier is an expression of art with the power to move like no other. While contemplating the collection, you are caught between surprise and wonder, and the gaze is captured, absorbed, and lost in the fascinating depths of 1,000-year-old stones. With a stylised feline interpretation, organic textures and shards of coloured light, shimmering gems electrify in hues of ripe fruits that summon up scents of distant paradises. The unique jewels use a series of techniques to mesmerise, such as trompe-l’oeil, a clever painting method to trick people into thinking that the objects represented in it are there, as well as graphic patterns and optical illusions. The collection also brings compositions that play with earthly gravity in radiant transfigurations of reality. The pieces quiver in the light and come to life upon contact with the skin. By challenging our perceptions, this collection leads us into a world of sensory stimulation. Each sense comes alive, including the sixth sense – a staggering feeling of emotion that touches the heart. The Phaan Ring brings the beauty of an 8.20-carat ruby, integrating groups of triangular diamonds that catch the light and illuminate the central red element. The Meride Necklace is composed of diamond, onyx and rock crystal to form a hypnotic checkerboard. The Pixelage Necklace conjures the image of a panther, so dear to Cartier. Polished onyxes evoke the marbling of the fur, while white, yellow and orange diamonds represent the thickness of the pelt, with their golden reflections highlighted by three captivating golden topazes. The Parhelia Ring has a 21.51-carat sapphire cabochon with an intense blue hue. Around it, five parentheses of radiant diamonds and emeralds reflect the light, fanning out like the surface of a lake. The Alaxoa Necklace is an elegant drop of emeralds cascading with the suppleness of living material, as diamond accents bring a fleeting sparkle to each movement. The Sharkara Necklace plays with variations of the same hue bringing tourmalines and coloured sapphires in a rainbow of pinks illuminated by the brightness of orange garnets and diamonds. The last piece, the Coruscant Necklace, is a vibrant testament to the enchanting power of diamonds. It features six different cuts – kite, octagonal, emerald, triangle, baguette and brilliant, reflecting light from a unique angle. To be the ambassador of the collection, Cartier borrowed the natural beauty of Golshifteh Farahani. Golshifteh is an accomplished actor, singer, and musician. In her 20-year career, she has made her mark on the red carpet, known for her style and elegance. Her multi-faceted personality makes her the perfect embodiment of Cartier High Jewellery, which draws its inspiration from a diverse and multicultural heritage.

Graceful
JEWELS
Delicate and feminine pieces are the key elements in Chopard’s Precious Lace Collection. A dainty detail to add to your looks.
44
www.ohlala-magazine.com
T
he luxury jewellery brand Chopard is back on the playing field with a new collection embracing the fusion of elegant lace and timeless diamonds. The Precious Lace Collection is committed to Chopard’s ceaseless aim of dismantling formality and adorning your skin with jewellery for ‘every day, every occasion, and every woman’. As jewels and fabric are intertwined, the intricate shapes of the gems come to signify the delicate artistry and agility of lace, which was perfected by hand craftsmen in 17thcentury Venice, whence it spread to the rest of Europe. Lace was originally made from linen, silk or metallic gold threads and in the 19th century, cotton was the new material used. The making of lace would normally involve three key specialists: the designer; the pattern maker, who translated the designs onto parchment; and the lacemaker, who would finally apply those designs onto the lace. Back in the early days, the fabric became an expensive luxury item due to the difficulty of its production and
was worn as a mark of aristocracy and sophistication by royals and the like. Nowadays, lace is made mainly by machines and is widely worn, both in formal and casual settings. Inspired by the ‘lightness and whiteness’ of this intricate textile, The Precious Lace Collection serves as the prime embodiment of the beautiful characteristics of the material, with a weaving of gold and diamond creating floral patterns, scrolls, swirls and scalloped edges as the chief shapes. The main design of the collection, namely that of a rhythmic rippling gold and diamond set curl enclosing an unfurling file of pearshaped diamonds, is now presented through several miniaturised forms. The Vague line comprises earrings, a pendant and a ring, with patterns of a foaming sea billow. And the Mini-Froufrou includes a set of earrings, a pendant, a ring and a bangle, adorned with a stylised flower motif with scalloped borders and pear-shaped diamond petals.

arrard are breaking new ground with the launch of their latest collection, championing the varied colours of the rainbow to encapsulate a ‘bright and bold elegance’. Wings Embrace Tropical is inspired by the diversity of natural hues and has adopted the ombre style to capture nature’s wonderful array of changing colours and their seamless wave of transition. Fitted in a wing design, the flow of colours is captured exquisitely with delicate gemstones and classic diamonds. Honouring nature and the animal kingdom, the openwork winged designs are named after some of the most beautiful birds. The phoenix, for instance, is known as a mythical bird being reborn from its own ashes, encapsulated in the set with the same name, featuring bright orange and yellow sapphires. The flamingo, a bird easily spotted in the region during wintertime, is the name given to the pink set of winged jewellery with a ripple of pink rubies and sapphires. The peacock is known for its dazzling explosion of greens and blues, perfectly captured in the set with the same name, presenting a fusion of light aquamarine gems and dark garnets. The dove, representing purity and peace, is caught in the fourth set, with simple yet endlessly charming diamonds. Next, the raven can be seen through dark ebony diamonds contrasted with white diamonds. Lastly, birds of paradise, whose various hues are shown in the set called ‘Paradise’ through pink sapphires and gorgeous violet and azure sapphires.

The World’s First
Abstract Fragrance In 1921, Gabrielle Chanel wanted an aroma to represent the modern woman, and that’s when the N°5 perfume was created. To celebrate its centenary, CHANEL has released a unique collection to honour this iconic scent. special N°5 collection of exclusive and limited-edition creations is one of CHANEL’s ways to celebrate 100 years of this memorable scent. A new and unique version of N°5 Eau de Parfum is now available and, for the first time, the bottle incorporates recycled glass while still keeping its pure, sparkling, transparent look. The box has also been redesigned with biodegradable paper pulp. Lastly, Mademoiselle Chanel’s lucky number, 5, is inscribed in gold on the label of this swanky reinterpretation. The Holiday Makeup Collection 2021 was inspired by the style codes
of N°5, which celebrates the golden amber colour of the perfume and combines it with shades of black, white and red. Now, wearing N°5 not only means enjoying the experience of applying a fragrance, but it also embraces the aesthetic of wearing warm, luminous make-up, complete with an intense red lip. The Les 4 Ombres has been reinvented as a N°5themed eye palette, with shades inspired by the colours of the perfume bottle. E
Elie Saab introduces a new scent to its perfume portfolio, inspired by when night meets day – get enchanted by Le Parfum Lumière.
lie Saab’s Le Parfum Lumière is the newest addition to the Lebanese couturier’s collection of elegant scents. Put together by the talented perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, the fragrance strives to embolden Saab’s theme of dawn and light with delicate bouquets of citrus, jasmine and ylangylang. It is a celebration of confident and brave women around the globe. The initial spray gives off a subtle aroma of Italian mandarin oil blend with a dash of Madagascan ylang-ylang oil, which unfurls like the rays of the sun flowering in the early hours of dawn. Next, a beguiling aroma
of Indian jasmine sambac absolute and tuberose invades the senses adding warmth and a feeling of calm, with a hint of fresh orange blossom intricately weaving itself into the fragrance. Finally, touches of musk, amber wood and patchouli heart take shape to form the ultimate olfactory sensation. A discussion of Le Parfum Lumière would not be complete without alluding to the graceful shape of the bottle, a newer and more refined version of the one used for the original scent, Le Parfum. Designed in the form of a gemstone with signature colours of ivory and gold, it pays homage to the marriage of Middle Eastern traditions and Western modernity.

Beyond
Red Lips The beauty brand La bouche rouge is debuting in the Middle East. To know more about the world of this unique label, OHLALA spoke to Nicolas Gerlier, CEO and founder.
L
NICOLAS GERLIER
a bouche rouge is a French beauty brand that was created after its founder became convinced that our generation could not continue to think, produce and consume like previous ones. With this concern in mind, he launched a new beauty model with a manifesto object – a lipstick. La bouche rouge stands for ‘red lips’ in French but also for having a voice to strike a strong message. Nicolas tells us how he is changing his approach to the beauty industry’s harmful effects on nature by creating conscious products. La bouche rouge believes sustainably designed, well-crafted, and refillable objects will outlive plastic alternatives.
64
www.ohlala-magazine.com
OHLALA - Changing the world for the better is something most people want but find challenging to apply in their lives. What made you take this step forward in creating a brand that cares for the environment? How did you overcome the challenges? Nicolas Gerlier - La bouche rouge’s vision is to conceive a new form of luxury – one that creates the desire to consume more sustainably, thanks to beautifully designed objects that endure. All our products are refillable and in our packaging, the materials we use are infinitely recyclable or compostable. Of course, this requires continuous innovation to create ever-more sustainable solutions. But we are dedicated to crafting products that preserve the earth’s resources. By drawing on traditional French craftsmanship, clean formulas with up to 91% active skincare ingredients and an unwavering commitment to sustainability, we are helping others find a simple, pleasurable way to tend to their beauty while caring for the environment. OHLALA – Was creating La bouche rouge a wow moment, or did it take a long time to conceive? Nicolas - I had been working in the beauty industry for over 10 years and, in this period, I saw it evolve, transform and fluctuate. It came to a point where I felt there was an overwhelming number of fake claims and promises regarding plastic use by brands. As a result, I decided to create my own model, adhering to a single conviction: to merge luxury and sustainability. OHLALA - What do you think are the most significant changes in the traditional way of producing beauty products that you made when conceptualising La bouche rouge? Nicolas - The beauty industry is the third most pollutant in terms of plastic, and we must tackle this before it’s too late for our planet – 83% of the earth’s water is polluted with microplastics. It is incredibly harmful to the environment and
toxic for the body yet remains present in most beauty products. There has been greater awareness around this these last few years, but not enough is being done. That’s why La bouche rouge is committed to avoiding the usage of microplastics in everything from our products to our packaging. OHLALA - Will you keep looking for ways of creating new products focusing on more sustainable production? Any new projects on the horizon that you can share with us? Nicolas - All our formulas are conceived in our proprietary labs in France to provide the highest quality and attention to detail. What’s more, we consistently advance in our research to further improve upon them. For instance, our lipstick formula is now in its third generation, integrating a powerful, anti-ageing seaweed that is harvested by hand in St. Suliac, France. We also chose to replace beeswax with vegetable wax, which is vegan and ensures higher traceability when sourced. Our goal is to guarantee the highest level of sustainability, from our sourcing to cultivation, formulation, packaging and beyond. OHLALA - Beauty is taken very seriously in the Middle East, and women here love to try new products. Are you planning on creating special collections to cater to the region’s needs? The heat during the warm months can ruin makeup pretty quickly, and comfort and lasting products are everyone’s favourites. Nicolas - We appreciate these women’s desire to uncover new products. We are committed to ensuring our clean make-up creations are innovative and entirely suitable for their skin. Each of La bouche rouge’s formulas provides the perfect balance of naturality, high-intensity colour and skincare performance. In addition, their cases are crafted to be true objets de beauté – fine leather pieces that are to be used daily and cherished for life thanks to their refillable, recyclable format. By merging these two aspects, we are developing a new beauty ritual, which is revolutionary in itself – this is how we are pioneering the beauty of tomorrow.

AN IMPROVED YOU The start of a new year is always a good reason to embrace good habits and invest in ourselves. OHLALA’s editor headed to Dessange Paris Bahrain to experience the powerful effects of combining spa treatments and health club workouts in a unique Slim & Trim programme.

I
love the feeling of new starts. The New Year brings this excitement of ‘everything is possible’; you just have to roll up your sleeves and go after it. It can be a career change or the real possibility of embracing a healthier lifestyle. When we put ourselves first in life, everything else falls into place. Feeling good is the first step towards happy days. And Dessange has the perfect formula for re-shaping your body by combining the right training and spa treatments. I can say that the expression ‘no pain, no gain’ is indeed quite true. However, at Dessange, this concept of bringing together effective spa solutions alongside your exercise routine might be a good reason to create discipline and keep track of your fitness goals. The Slim & Trim programme consists of a combination of personal trainer + Power Plate and Smoothing Cellulite Body Treatment and/or Endermologie Lipomassage.

My day at Dessange started at the health club. I was booked in for a session with Maylene, the personal trainer (and bodybuilder), for one full hour with a true connoisseur on the subject of getting fit. She first asked about my personal goals, and I told her that toning was definitely my biggest concern. Lack of exercise, muscle loss due to sedentarism and ageing left me with a body that could do much better if I had a consistent fitness routine. The best thing about having a personal trainer is that they will create a programme that will be tailor-made to your needs and capabilities, constantly changing and evolving according to your progress. Maylene made a special circuit to focus on the areas I was mostly concerned about – glutes, abs and arms. The workout sequence was the following: battle rope, deadlift, slam ball (to relieve all your frustrations), Bosu Burpie, TRX single-leg Bulgarian squat, TRX suspension planking, dumbbell biceps curls and abs with the medicine ball. Everything was done with smiles and motivation, which was a first for me. Don’t get me wrong; it was challenging but enjoyable. When you have someone there for you, it helps accomplish tasks and keep energy levels up. We then moved to the Power Plate, a machine that uses vibrations to stimulate muscles, giving the body a high-speed, low-impact workout. The Power Plate surface vibrates 25 to 50 times per second, resulting in corresponding muscle activation, increasing your strength and flexibility, boosting your metabolism, improving circulation, delivering faster and longer-lasting results. The other benefits are the increase of bone density, reduced pain associated with osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and plantar fasciitis, and an overall sense of wellbeing. I didn’t stay too long on the plate, as the recommended maximum time is 30 minutes.
68
www.ohlala-magazine.com
I was worried that I would feel exhausted after my session, but I have to confess that I ended this intense training time with more stamina than when I started. I was ready to keep moving, and I am not an exercise enthusiast, for the record. Studies show that physical activity boosts energy and improves your mood, so nothing really unexpected, but new for me. Maylene recommended that I should exercise three to four times a week, reinforcing that consistency is key for best results. It was time to keep working on my body shape with a Smoothing Cellulite Body Treatment through the hands of Chenda at the spa. The contouring wrap treatment aims to stimulate the body’s ability to break down fat, increase metabolism, eliminate water retention, and reduce cellulite deposits. Unfortunately, I do not have the best diet, I keep sitting for long hours, and the ageing factor has resulted in an unflattering bottom area that will thank this strong detox attention.
The treatment started with a whole-body scrubbing that promoted the extraction of dead cells and left me with an amazing sensation. After showering to remove the scrubbing cream, Chenda applied the anticellulite activating gel to my thighs, abdomen, glutes and lower back. The intense massage improves circulation in the area, refining body contour and reducing spongy and dimply skin. A 100% pure micronised green coffee cream was then applied to my entire body to smooth and enhance skin texture. After, I was wrapped in a warm blanket to promote sweat, removing body toxins and making the cream penetrate my skin for the most desirable outcome. I felt hugged and secure, such a comforting feeling, for about 20 minutes. After showering again, I went back for the final stage of this wonderful treatment – the moisturiser.

Before leaving Dessange, I was invited to go to the juice bar. A special hidden gem inside this beauty haven to try the Xtreme Green detox juice. The green drink is made with kale, romaine lettuce, celery, cucumber, green apple, parsley, lemon and ginger. It improves hydration, nutrition, quality of sleep and mental clarity. It also gives your digestive system a rest while reducing food cravings and bloating. After arriving home and checking my body in front of the mirror, I noticed an instant improvement in my bottom area appearance in general. The skin texture was incredibly smooth, and I couldn’t believe that this problematic region was already looking much better after one session! I don’t know if the positive outcome was due to the exercise done before the spa treatment. What I can confidently say is that it did work wonders. And if you follow the recommendation of doing it twice a week, in a month your body will show great results. Both ladies in charge of the health club and spa, Maja and Joie, also highly recommend combining the treatment I had with LPG (a 100% non-invasive mechanical lipomassage that stimulates the natural breaking down of fats for draining, slimming and firming the treated area). I’ve done this treatment before, and the results were awe-inspiring (you can read all about it in our September 2021 issue at issuu.com/ohlalabahrain). If you are looking to start the year transforming your body or taking good care of yourself, look for the specialised team at Dessange. You will find the best workout plan for you and the spa treatment that will cater for your desires and goals.

“The ability to adapt and be agile in the face of changing circumstances is an important lesson for all of us. ” – Amira Ismail OHLALA - Tell us about your career path. How did it start, and how did you get to where you are today? Amira Ismail - For the past 25 years, I have worked in the banking and payments industry sectors. Early in my career, I was put on par with other top managers at my previous organisation and eventually worked my way up to a senior position with one of the country’s largest banks. Working and being a mother at the same time has had many ups and downs for me, as it has for many other women. However, I have emerged as a resilient woman in a male-dominated industry. My commitment to fostering a financially inclusive community has led me to develop customer-centric solutions that address real-world problems. I’ve pivoted my career focus to developing payment solutions that benefit our communities. And strategies that reflect on innovative solutions that empower both businesses and consumers. After establishing my ideals and personal vision, I achieved the career I desired. Three key takeaways have shaped my career: discover your purpose, set goals, and cultivate compassion at work. OHLALA - What have been the most significant accomplishments and challenges you faced during this period? Amira - The Covid-19 crisis has reshaped the entire economic environment as well as our interpersonal relationships. However, as with any disruptive event, each significant shift has resulted in new ways of engaging and doing business. At the beginning of the pandemic, I was apprehensive about attending video calls; however, this quickly became the norm, and I believe this is going to continue even in a post-pandemic era. The pandemic taught us many valuable lessons, allowing us to pause and reflect on what we have accomplished and what we can do more for our society. However, my most significant accomplishment thus far has been my ability to reinvent myself in the face of today’s dynamic challenges. And the capacity to serve the community despite the enormous challenges we all collectively face. The ability to adapt and be agile in the face of changing circumstances is an important lesson for all of us. OHLALA - What were your aspirations when you first started working? Do you feel that you have achieved more than you expected? Amira - Every day has been an enlightening experience. In my view, small daily steps are incremental steps towards a bigger goal. My aspiration stemmed from my desire to make a long-term contribution to the community. And I was fortunate to have a job that allowed me to further my professional development while also fulfilling my personal desire to empower businesses and people. I believe there is no end to creating a difference. I wanted to see more women emerge as leaders in their respective fields – empowering women will be my ongoing mission.
OHLALA - One of the main aspects of your career and a skill you must have mastered is to know how to deal with and understand people’s expectations. What do you think are the key elements to successfully do that? Amira - There are numerous elements that have evolved around understanding people’s expectations. Sometimes you have to meet people where they are, not where you are. I believe we must learn the importance of cultivating compassion at work and in life in general. For me, empathy entails putting yourself in the shoes of another person, recognising their needs, and doing everything you can to help alleviate their situation. I used to listen with the intent to reply rather than to understand. But, in the end, it didn’t help me understand other people’s perspectives. I’ve come to recognise that being compassionate will help us build successful teams, and having successful teams will help us make better companies. OHLALA - You have been working in the financial sector for a while. What do you like the most about it? Amira - I enjoy working in the financial sector because it is a rapidly growing and dynamic industry. There are so many new products that were unfathomable just 10 years ago. And it has become ingrained in our daily lives. Unknown technology has now become the norm. Previously, cash reigned supreme, but much has changed in the dynamics of making payments even more seamless. I do not believe that currency notes are going to become depleted entirely because there are still sectors of the economy that operate with cash. I think that the FinTech sector will play a significant role in bringing about yet another technological revolution. I have witnessed how Bahrain was at the forefront of such a meaningful financial landscape transformation. And I wanted to do more to help the country’s innovation grow and succeed. OHLALA - What is something that you are passionate about that not many people know? Any hobbies or special skills? Amira - Community services are my passion, and engaging enables me to acquire life skills and knowledge as well as provide a service to those who need it the most. Create special bonds with those being served and increase social awareness and responsibility to help others change their lives to better lives. It is our duty to HELP and payback to our community. I served as President of the Rotary Club of Salmaniya for two years, where I had the chance to execute different community projects for the unprivileged people. These projects left a positive impact on others and positive memories for me.

A Creative Leader
Versatility and determination make Banan Yaquby, former CEO of Yaquby Stores and founder of Quby Creative Consultants, a strong force in Bahrain’s business scenario. OHLALA spoke to her about how she successfully embraces two different work mindsets.

“ I think the best way to balance creativity and business is to consistently dedicate time to step back and explore new things, read, use your hands (when you have the time) – it all helps in balancing it out.” – Banan Yaquby
OHLALA - You have a BA in Visual Communication/ Graphic Design, but your entire career has led you to the business area, first becoming the CEO of Yaquby Stores and then founding Quby Creative Consultants. Do you believe that having a background in creativity has helped you succeed as a leader? Banan Yaquby - I definitely believe that you act as a problem solver as a designer. You always observe what’s around you, which makes you very analytical at times. It’s true, I’ve worked in our family business, but I have always found ways to incorporate creativity in anything I did – it’s actually what keeps me going. Also, within Quby, I’m the founder, but I’m also the Creative Director, so I am very much involved with creativity every day.
any other field, you really need to understand the subject matter. Sometimes many people tend to skip this stage, but researching the topic and truly understanding what you are working with is an essential step to creating any successful plan. Quby has now been running for 11 years, and we have amazing team members that have grown with the company into great leaders. So, depending on the project, sometimes I am very hands-on and at other times our team lead many of the projects without me having to interfere every step of the way. We believe in nurturing local talent and having team members who can be tomorrow’s leaders within Quby is our true measure of success.
OHLALA - You must think outside the box. How important is it to explore your creativity while developing successful businesses? How do you balance both skills, the designer and the businesswoman in you? Banan - Operations in any business can sometimes be very draining, as the day-to-day activities are often very time consuming and far away from anything creative. I think the best way to balance creativity and business is to consistently dedicate time to step back and explore new things, read, use your hands (when you have the time) – it all helps in balancing it out.
OHLALA - What do you like the most about your job? Banan - The most rewarding thing over the years, and my favourite, has been seeing brands we worked with from scratch grow to become franchises not just regionally, also internationally. It makes us very proud!
OHLALA - At Quby Creative Consultants, besides being the company’s founder, you are also the Creative Director, where you can put your designer side into action. How would you describe the process of creating a powerful visual communication? How hands-on are you in this process? Banan - To create anything powerful, whether in design or
OHLALA - OHLALA – What do you do to disconnect from work? Any hobbies or interests that make you turn off from thinking of work? Banan - When I turn off from work, I usually read about design or explore an online design workshop. Maybe it’s the time off that lets me reconnect more with my designer side rather than during my business hours. OHLALA - What makes Bahrain such a special place for you? Banan - The multicultural aspect of our country and openness to welcome anyone.

It’s a Gem’s World
Few things in this world can keep their beauty for years to come – jewellery is one of them. We met Dina Shirazi, Director at Bahrain Jewellery Centre, to talk about her experience in the industry and the symbols behind a precious jewel.

www.ohlala-magazine.com
“Many memories and untold stories are created wearing certain special gems, and they become attached to their owner. There is sentiment to each piece, and that is what makes it so meaningful in eventually getting passed on for generations to come.” – Dina Shirazi
OHLALA - The jewellery world has always been part of your life. What are your earliest memories of the Bahrain Jewellery Centre? Have you always planned to follow a career in the company? Dina Shirazi - I have been intrigued by the jewellery world ever since I was a young girl, and it truly has been an intrinsic part of my life. I used to accompany my late father to work and was fascinated by this field. Eventually, I got involved in the business. This career path has come naturally to me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. OHLALA - What do you like most about working with gems and precious items? Dina - Each stone has its own unique beauty and individual characteristic. As stunning as some gems are, there is a hidden world that is unbeknownst to the naked eye. I love delving into the breathtaking beauty of each precious item by closely examining its inclusions and finding out about its natural formation. I enjoy the excitement of identifying the gemstone, its origin, and how exactly it was formed within the Earth. There is so much to discover, just like a beautiful story unfolding, and this is what I find so enthralling. OHLALA - What do you think makes luxury watches and jewellery so significant in people’s lives? Dina - Jewellery and watches are luxury items so, with each purchase, there is thought and emotion that is provoked by the piece in its buyer. Its significance lies in the feelings encompassed by trying on the jewel, which leads its buyer to ensure that piece becomes their own. Many memories and untold stories are created wearing certain special gems, and they become attached to their owner. There is sentiment to each piece, and that is what makes it so meaningful in eventually getting passed on for generations to come.
OHLALA - What are the biggest challenges of working in this field? Dina - The most significant challenges we face in this field are the ever-evolving styles and trends. What is current and indemand today may change tomorrow, so it is imperative to keep up and always be on the lookout for our customers’ preferences. There are, of course, anchor companies that will always remain but, at the end of the day, it is crucial to keep diversifying and embracing the new. OHLALA - What is your personal preference for jewellery and watches? Any brand or specific design that you like most? Dina - I do not have a personal preference when it comes to watches and jewellery. I believe every piece carries its own story at the time it was bought. However, I always encourage our clients in buying items that can become heirlooms. Heirloom pieces share history and tradition and tie families to previous generations. The most important factors in finding an heirloom piece are to ensure it has timeless value, a classic design, quality craftsmanship, and is made with gemstones of high durability. OHLALA - As a Bahraini, what do you think is a hidden gem or a unique characteristic to the Kingdom that people should explore or know about? Dina - Bahrain is such an enchanting island, and I know that both nationals and residents would agree on this. It has a very distinct charm that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. I believe the Bahraini people are what makes Bahrain so unique; they are so welcoming and warm, which encourages the diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures that adds to Bahrain’s beauty. As Bahrain carries a lot of culture and history, many heritage sites have been wonderfully preserved throughout the years. I think visiting any of these places will give a glimpse and feel of the energy that makes this country so significantly endearing.

hen your father Edoardo Caovilla first started making shoes, the focus was on couture and craftsmanship. Tell us why this is imperative to the Caovilla DNA. He was a dreamer and after the First and Second World War everything was dark and sad, so, he wanted to give elegance and colour to his creations. He wanted to combine craftsmanship and haute couture to give a touch of extreme elegance. In this way the shoes become real jewels and gems. What was the inspiration behind the Fall Winter 2017 collection design, and what does it represent? A dip into the past revisited for a contemporary woman, different inspirations for different iconic shapes. The luxurious opulence of mink; full, rich and sensuous which further creates desire and satisfaction to the touch. In high contrast to sparkling crystals, the glamorous couple form a perfect Yin and Yang balance. René Caovilla’s creativity translates into exquisitely crafted shoes with an impeccable fit designed and developed for contemporary women, who are aware of their strength, beauty and uniqueness. In your Fall Winter 2017-2018 campaign we see Sicilian model Giulia Maenza revealing different traits of her personality by posing with different attitudes. This is exalted by the selection of eight René Caovilla high-end footwear creations, all coming in a chic black tone. Why have you chosen this elegant and sophisticated, yet effortless approach? The choice of doing our Fall Winter campaign had the purpose of showing the new contemporary and sophisticated Caovilla woman. Giulia Maenza is a young Italian model that represents our sophistication with her beauty perfectly. The renowned photographer ‘Giampaolo Sgura’ and stylist ‘Viviana Volpicella’ added to this Italian dream team with their vision and experience to translate into images the timeless beauty of our Brand.

ou’re a Michelin-starred chef and internationally renowned restaurateur. Do you feel any pressure with such acclaimed titles? The pressure I feel every day is not about the Michelin Guide but that of the customer who I want to feel special so that they feel that they want to come back. That’s the biggest pressure and it’s what I teach everyone who is working with me. We aim to make people feel comfortable in our restaurant and feel like family. Why is it important to keep not only your ingredients fresh, but, your dining concepts? I really believe there has to be an evolution. We can’t simply do the same thing over and over again. I do like to maintain some tradition but mix it with innovation. I like to say that tradition mixed with innovation makes a good cake! Why has the Middle East been an area of great interest for the WP Fine Dining Group? When we started in London around 8 years ago a lot of people were visiting from the Middle East and saying to us “You must open a restaurant in the Middle East - in Dubai”, and we did and after Dubai we opened further restaurants in Bahrain and Doha. Bahrain has become my favourite as the people are so welcoming and make you feel like you are one of the family. 60

Al Areen Palace provides a perfectly splendorous setting for their Live Your Life Wellness Center. The impressive ‘fortified’ entrance draws guests and visitors into the luxuriant surroundings which comprise a series of luxury villa style residences, restaurants, bars and the Live Your Life Wellness Center itself. The architecture and décor exemplify traditional Arabian sophistication and opulence with all of the necessary contemporary features and facilities that one would expect. The Live Your Life Wellness Center within the Health Club area of the hotel is a triumph. Its treatment rooms and relaxation areas are firmly part of the experience as they stimulate the senses in the same way in which many of the treatments and programmes do. Granite, marble, tiled columns and palm trees incorporated into the water therapy area along with ostentatious water features and subdued lighting elevate it to a level which is ‘second to none’ in Bahrain. As I slipped on my silky robe and prepared for my treatments to begin I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and relaxation simply from the ambience of the surroundings and its location. On arrival I was invited to partake in the thirstquenching Butterfly Pea Tea which is beneficial to so many of the bodies functions and can actually counter the symptoms of many common conditions. It is an antioxidant which also reduces inflammation and pain. It’s anti-asthmatic properties will appeal to those with respiratory issues and its ability to regulate blood sugar levels is valuable to those with

diabetic issues. This holistic approach runs throughout the ethos of the Live Your Life Wellness Center. Holistic therapy, detox and preventative programs are used in conjunction with state-of-the-art beauty treatments and fitness programs to sculpt mind and body whilst inducing a sense of wellness inside and out. The Hydrafacial treatment is a non- invasive treatment which is designed to tackle the familiar signs of ageing, particularly fine lines, whilst replenishing the anti-ageing properties of the skin. This is a very unique technique where the skin is cleansed and then gentle suction is applied to remove impurities and stimulate blood flow. Due to the fact that the tiny vacuum head produces such a relaxing sensation you feel the benefits of both an invigorating ‘deep clean’ treatment and a luxuriant facial massage. Hyaluronic Acid alongside substances such as collagen and elastin maintain the form and vitality of your complexion. The facial is concluded by the application of Hyaluronic Acid which is slowly absorbed by the skin and ideally should be left to fully permeate overnight following the treatment. The effect was a blissful dewy glow which stayed with me for several days following the Hydrafacial Treatment. The Velashape and Pressotherapy treatments are a prime example of their continuous holistic regime. Velashape is fundamentally an anti-cellulite treatment which contours the body and reduces fat. The combination of Bi-Polar Radio Frequency, infrared light, vacuum and mechanical manipulation improve circulation, increase the metabolism and break down fatty tissues. The process is similar to that of the Hydra facial using suction and rollers which invigorate whilst smoothing and providing a dimple-free finish. Despite being quite a gentle process it provides the same benefits as a deep tissue massage. I was slightly sceptical about whether or not I would see any noticeable benefits but on closer inspection the difference in texture and appearance was marked. Finally I was introduced to the remarkable Pressotherapy Suit. It is renowned for its ability to generate effective lymphatic drainage and therefore it is of both medical and cosmetic value. The expulsion of the body’s natural toxins and improved skin oxygenation enhance skin tone and general appearance. In addition scar tissue and crystallisation which can be a side effect of invasive procedures can also be broken down through the use of Pressotherapy. It’s genuinely very difficult for me to liken this to any other retreat experiences I have had as it proved itself as truly unique. The Hammam Garden is the antithesis of serenity and luxury and meandering through the Live Your Life Wellness Center is just as much a part of your regimen as the therapies themselves. You will feel an overwhelming sense of well being and contentment upon departure. For more information please call +973 17845000 @alareenpalaceandspa www.ohlala-magazine.com

His passion for sparkling finery goes back further to a youth spent between Paris, Rome and Tuscany. “I was surrounded by many beautiful things growing up,’’ explains Bedarida, whose father was from Paris and mother from Florence. My father was a cultural attaché travelling from embassy to embassy. Because of his job, I was exposed to painters, writers, architects..... Jewellery was an especially big part of my childhood. FINDING YOUR FEET To commemorate International Women’s Day we couldn’t help but get things off on the right foot with the beautiful MARY ALICE MALONE, Founder & Creative Director of eponymous luxury shoe label Malone Souliers. Where do you gain your inspiration for your innovative designs? Art and psychology are both personal interests of mine. I find that a lot of my inspiration comes from a blend of psychology, art and where they intersect. I really enjoy evolutionary psychology; how the male-female dynamic has got to be. Were we to approach the basis of its instinct, shoes are fundamentally of sensuous presentation, albeit to the same or opposite sex – an ode to one’s self-admiration and often the wish for its external celebration. I am constantly trying to understand ‘what?’ and ‘why?’ we do, uncovering the elements that make women 72

The mule style is what we are known for as a brand, in particular our iconic Maureen silhouette. This has been a favourite from day one. People are more aware of what they are wearing now-a-days and where their clothing is sourced. Do you follow a particular ethical approach throughout your portfolio? We are always mindful of our production process and the impact it has when creating a new collection. What is your plan for the near future, and where do you hope to take the brand in the next five to ten years? Ten years seems very far! I would love to simply continue to do what we are doing and what we do; creating comfortable and beautiful shoes that women want to wear and feel confident and empowered when they do. Since we are celebrating International Women’s Day this month, how would you describe a female who wears Malone Souliers? I design for a specific woman, but only in attitude and embodiment. I don’t care where she comes from - whether she’s a mother or a hedge fund banker, I am more fascinated by a woman who is unapologetically herself. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that not many people are aware of. Before I studied at Cordwainers and became a shoe designer I actually was a furniture maker! feel beautiful, and more so. Art is of same inspiration, heavily boding on concepts reflective emotion and meditative intimacy. Tell us about your biggest challenge that you have faced with Malone Souliers and how you have overcome such difficulties. It was hard in the beginning to launch a brand as an unknown in the luxury shoe market that was already saturated with established brands. You have been quoted as saying ‘Comfort is king’, how have you ensured that this vision is showcased throughout the design process in ‘Malone Souliers’s collections’? I design architecturally, and secondly aesthetically. Every line and its final form is considered, each shoe must support to a woman’s form and weight, so much so the position of the heel is exact to a millimeter to ensure that the weight is perfectly balanced, and not thrown out of sync with the rest of the body. Malone Souliers has already gained international status with a whole accolade of icons adorning their feet, such as when THOSE blockheeled Marjorie shoes were worn by Amal Clooney. As a label you have collaborated with British ready-to-wear label Roksanda and French couture house classic Emanuel Ungaro, is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with? Collaborating with others is a beautiful privilege of getting to see and understand another girl, another woman, and indeed another vision. We are actually in talks with some very exciting Ready-to-Wear brands at the moment that I would love to collaborate with, so watch this space. As Founder and Creative Director of Malone Souliers what design from the Malone Souliers brand could you not live without?

e’ve said it before and we will say it again, we simply love the Porsche brand! For ladies of leisure, mums on school runs, the boss woman hustling from one meeting to another, or even a single young female enjoying a night on the town with her girls, Porsche has never let us down. And why would it? It seems that every automobile they create is a work of art and this has been true for almost a century of vehicle production. The thought of getting behind the wheel of yet another untested Porsche model is always a thrill for us and we made sure to lap up every moment of the experience. As the Porsche Macan came into our view for the very first time, we were instantly impressed with the overall shape and design of this new compact SUV. As expected of a Porsche, its lines and curves seemed to effortlessly

With the perfect silhouette, the front end of the 2019 Macan has been redesigned giving it a wider appearance. The newly designed main headlights feature LED technology that is incorporated as standard. Let’s just say, if you need a good spotlight for those impromptu after sunset photos in the coolest locations, these beams have got your back. We were informed that there is an optional Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) that can be used to control light distribution. The rear of the Macan also boasts a three-dimensional LED light panel. As far as aesthetics go, the Macan shines bright like a diamond! It was obvious that the vehicle dynamics of the Macan has remained its principle feature. The chassis has been overhauled to increase comfort and to improve the overall driving experience. As you would expect from a sports car brand, the Macan comes complete with mixed-sized tyres that allow for you to adopt a dynamic driving style by taking full advantage of the intelligent all-wheel drive Porsche Traction

We delve into a day in the life of CRISTALYN PASTRANA, Cluster Director of Marketing for Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, The Westin and Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain, and this woman is truly is unstoppable.
I start my day... Our household usually wakes up as early as 5am during weekdays. Our daughter Salma goes to school, so my husband and I need to also prepare for the day ahead. We are usually out of the house by 6.15am to avoid traffic and I arrive at work before 8am. My role is… I am the Cluster Director of Marketing for three hotels in Bahrain; Sheraton Bahrain Hotel and the complex The Westin & Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain. I have a fantastic Marketing and PR team that I have worked closely with to build fantastic marketing strategies for these three brands and execute PR events. A Day in the Life of Cristalyn… My life is always hectic (as you can imagine!), the day at the office usually starts on my second cup of coffee of the day. My morning consists of reading the newspaper and going through emails. Not to forget the daily morning brief with my team to review what has been done the previous day and the tasks to fulfill for the current day. As I switch days on both hotels it is very important that I go over a list of things to do for both of my teams on a daily basis. If I am at the Sheraton I ensure that my team at The Westin & Le Méridien are updated on things to do as well through our WhatsApp group. Oh, the power of technology! At 9am we have our meeting with other heads of departments and our General Manager to go over hotel operations and information collated from the previous day and provide an overview of the day ahead e.g VIP arrivals, special events, company updates and other business related communication that needs to be shared with the team. The day will continue with strategy meetings, meetings with media and suppliers, going through social media strategy, checking creative with our Graphic Designer and checking communication updates as per brand. After work it is back to my mother and wife duties at home. How I got into the hospitality industry… My hospitality career started in Jordan at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea back in 2006 as their PR Coordinator. I’ve always loved being around people, so, working with the media gave a true synergy to this ethos. Whether it’s touching their emotions or connecting them to something that reminds them of something much bigger than themselves, there’s this beauty in music that’s not connected to sentences. It’s very transportive. I would hope that when people hear our music or come to see us, they’re able to share that with us.” - Jay Beckenstein, Group Leader of Spyro Gyra.

BEAUTIFUL
HAUTE JOAILLERIE – AN ANTHEM TO RUBIES
DECLARATIONS With Valentine’s Day on the horizon CHOPARD have you covered with the most dazzling showcase. Through its creativity, the Maison Chopard, the quintessential Artisan of Emotions, infuses the act of giving with its noblest meaning: the gifts made to those we love become bonds conveying deep feelings and shared values. Valentine’s Day offers the watchmaker-jeweller an opportunity to demonstrate the full extent of its creative genius and to be a partner to the most beautiful declarations. For a wife, a fiancé, a dear friend or indeed anyone who is an object of affection, this uniquely special day gives everyone a chance to express the sincerity of their feelings.
HAPPY HEARTS – CHOPARD’S BIG HEART
Mischievous and generous Happy Hearts jewellery perpetually reinvents itself through a multitude of variations and colours, in step with the seasons and women’s desires. Chopard’s boundless creativity has now given rise to new short necklaces joining the collection, featuring a coloured heart in onyx, mother-of-pearl, malachite or red stone, adorned on either side with two hearts bearing a dancing diamond. Likewise, the bangle bracelet, that most iconic expression of Happy Hearts, appears in an even more precious version. In addition to its large mother-of-pearl or diamond heart performing a graceful pas de deux with a smaller heart gently framing the impulsive twirls of a dancing diamond, the bracelet is adorned for the first time with a dainty lateral diamond setting. After a first watch presented in 2019, the Happy Hearts collection once again welcomes a new timepiece allowing hearts to dance around its dial in complete freedom. At the heart of its 30-millimeter steel and 18-carat rose gold case, the delightful mother-of-pearl dial provides a perfect setting for the ballet performed by a dancing diamond and two dancing hearts: one in 18-carat rose gold and mother-of-pearl, and the other in diamond-set 18-carat white gold. 28

HAPPY DIAMONDS ICONS – TALISMAN-LIKE DANCING DIAMONDS
Like an alchemist, Chopard has the ability to fashion the shape of the heart to create its most accomplished, perfect and proportionate version for the Happy Diamonds Icons. The heart reveals all the Emotion of the Maison, which pays multiple tributes to those who are unafraid to reveal their feelings and express their love. With Happy Diamonds Icons, a great jewellery classic invites itself into women’s lives. Whirling between two sapphire crystals, one or three dancing diamonds bring sparkling life to a new series of short necklaces in 18-carat white or rose gold, either polished or set with diamonds, completing the collection. They symbolise the impulses of the heart as well as every move of the women who wear them like precious talismans.
L’HEURE DU DIAMANT – THE SHEER DELIGHT OF PRECIOUS HOURS
With the L’Heure du Diamant watch collection, the Artisans of the Maison have orchestrated an encounter between jewellery and watches. Infused with a delightful 1970s spirit, these diamond bedecked timepieces sparkling with timeless charm are all about light and airy proportions. Previously introduced in round or oval versions, L’Heure du Diamant watches now appear with a case shaped like a vibrant heart, of which the steady beat is evoked by the hand-engraved guilloché motif gracing the mother-of-pearl dial. Two versions, in 18-carat rose or white gold, are paired with a gold link bracelet and a white mother-of-pearl dial. Two others are teamed with a blue or burgundy leather strap and feature a mother-of-pearl dial in matching shades.
L.U.C XPS TWIST QF – THE ART OF EXTRAVAGANCE
In her sketchbooks, Caroline Scheufele, the inspiration behind Chopard Haute Joaillerie, dreamed of highlighting rubies. Firstly, through an imposing necklace composed of no less than 23 Mozambican rubies and diamonds set in ethical ‘Fairmined’ certified gold – a rare form of artisanal gold of which the responsible mining is actively supported by Chopard. Secondly, through a ring that the Maison’s Artistic Direction has chosen in order to showcase a beautiful 5-carat ruby in the much-coveted pigeon’s blood colour. Carved in the shape of a heart, the stone appears to throb to the rhythm of the passion that drives the deepest feelings. An ode to rubies, masterfully composed by the expertise and virtuosity deployed in the Chopard Haute Joaillerie ateliers.
While Haute Horlogerie traditions are generally about symmetry, an aesthetic order to which the eye responds instinctively, the L.U.C XPS Twist QF timepiece chooses to express itself in a different vein. It has fun by introducing a slightly offset crown and off-centred small seconds display at 7 o’clock – a signature feature of the Twist series within the L.U.C. collection. Crafted in ethical ‘Fairmined’ certified 18-carat white gold and issued in a 250-piece limited series, it opts for carefully controlled eccentricity and elegant asymmetry beating to the rhythm of the L.U.C 96.26-L movement with automatic winding, equipped with a 22-carat gold micro rotor and two stacked barrels – based on Chopard Twin technology. While fulfilling the criteria of several certification programmes particularly cherished by Chopard, the L.U.C XPS Twist QF timepiece features a wide range of elegant features. Fleurier Quality Foundation certification, chronometer certification, Chopard Twin technology with two barrels, a case in ethical ‘Fairmined’ certified gold: it goes well beyond aesthetic prowess to offer superlative craftsmanship. A slim fit on the wrist, rich textures, production quality and a resolutely ethical dimension: nothing is missing from the picture, including a hint of extravagance.
“Valentine’s Day offers the watchmaker-jeweller an opportunity to demonstrate the full extent of its creative genius and to be a partner to the most beautiful declarations.”
L.U.C CHRONO ONE FLYBACK – THE CHIC CHRONOGRAPH
ACCESSORIES
With its chic subtle grey nuances, the L.U.C Chrono One Flyback timepiece is imbued with the relaxed, contemporary and controlled elegance that is the unique signature of L.U.C. creations. Issued in a 250-piece steel limited edition, it is equipped with a chronometer-certified calibre, designed and assembled within Chopard Manufacture. The L.U.C 03.03-L movement, with a running time of 60 hours, is of the flyback type, enabling this model to measure short times smoothly and easily, since this function serves to reset the counters to zero and restart at a single press. The calibre is also equipped with a stop seconds device enabling highly accurate time setting. Finally, it is equipped with a 22-carat gold openworked rotor. Four patents have been duly registered and approved for these technologies developed by Chopard’s research and development teams.
Above and beyond its watch and jewellery expertise, Chopard offers a collection of accessories fashioned from the finest materials by the best Artisans. The Maison’s range of leather goods is now enriched with the Happy Hearts shoulder bag collection. Inspired by this jewellery line, of which the colourful hearts have become the signature of the Maison, two red calf leather bags once again celebrate the heart. Within the graceful outline of their heart-shaped clasp, the Chopard C performs an eternal dance, radiating the joy of living that it symbolises through a wave of topstitching in all the colours of the rainbow. A subtle blend of femininity and audacity. For men, Chopard reflects the world of gentlemen drivers through two Classic Racing straps in black braided leather featuring a minimalist style epitomising timeless luxury. The unmistakable symbol of the Mille Miglia collections, the famous herringbone pattern of 1960s Dunlop tyres, adorns the black and red or black and grey Chopard clasp, ensuring an inimitable sport-chic look. Amidst the challenging events of 2020 were countless lessons to be learned, one being the impact of our home, our surroundings, on our well-being. To that end, OHLALA taps a feng shui expert who combines her expertise in and passion for the ancient practice with interior design and wellness to create spaces that are in harmony with their dwellers.
W
hile the concept of feng shui is a novelty on the pages of OHLALA, it’s anything but new – experts suggest it has been around for over 6,000 years. But for those still wondering what it is, let us break it down. Feng shui – literally “wind-water” – is a pseudoscientific practice originating in ancient China that claims to use energy forces to harmonise individuals with their environment. How? By arranging the pieces in living spaces in order to create balance with the natural world. And at a time when we’ve mastered the art of staying in, feng shui is more important than ever. Elaborating on how the role of feng shui has evolved over the course of 2020, Simone Osswald of SO Feng Shui Design says, “This year has indeed made people more conscious of their home surroundings. Being forced to stay at home and spending more time inside their four walls has changed the operations of their daily lives and shifted their attention towards arranging their homes to their new operational needs. People decluttered their rooms, redecorated their homes, and set up home offices. Even those unfamiliar with the concept of feng shui have unconsciously and naturally applied this ancient technique for themselves. Feng shui is indeed about creating a feel-good home with positive energies.”

Sustainable
FASHION Sara Tamimi’s collection Chapter 2 celebrates environmentally-friendly living and a reminiscence of classic, old-time looks. Inspired by her mother’s vintage wardrobe, Sara Tamimi’s Chapter 2 collection represents a feminine touch and intimate nostalgia that embraces a move to sustainable living and a rejection of throwaway fashion. The state-of-the-art fabrics used in the collection include rose-petal satin, Global Organic Textile Standard silk, and 100% Oeko-Tex materials (products certified with Oeko-Tex do not contain any toxic or allergic substances) as well as ethically-sourced Egyptian cotton and vegan leather. These materials are used to create designs such as pin-tucked bodices, puffed-sleeve jackets and high-waisted flares, proving that a combination of luxury and sustainability is more than just possible – but also fashionable. Graceful and eco-friendly, Sara Tamimi’s second collection is an ode to the image of the modern woman: courageous, conscious, and classy. She expresses a deep appreciation for quality finishing and perfect fit while passionately pursuing beautiful fabrics.

An African
LEGACY Born in Exile celebrate their roots with the Blood, Sweat and Oil AW2021 collection, a salute to Libyan identity and history. Fashion can go beyond pretty designs bringing strong statements, portraying the brands’ values in the society they are from. Born in Exile’s AW2021 collection is a tribute to Libyan history and the social turmoil that followed the civil war and the discovery of oil in the country thereafter. Inspired to bring attention to the beauty of Libyan cultural memory, the label flaunts a distinct sense of style, blending tradition and modern fashionwear into a unique look in tribute to the country. The collection epitomises the yearnings, trepidations, and precariousness of Libya’s oil explosion, using various prints and traditional patterns. It brings a wide variety of jackets, coats, blazers, trousers, skirts, shorts, jumpsuits, and T-shirts that are embellished with eye-catching Libyan embroidery and designs. Colour contrasts of white knitwear and black studded leather are also used to showcase the mirage of old and new representations of the country’s identity. The brand is a ready-to-wear label created in 2018 by designer Ibrahim Shebani, inspired by his personal story of being a Libyan immigrant. Born in Germany and brought up in both Libya and Egypt, his family was exiled from their homeland in the ‘70s. A return years later was similarly interrupted by the civil war whence Shebani had to leave again in 2014. These adversities never stopped him expressing himself through his fashion creations.

NEW YEAR INSPIRATION Not surprisingly, the exceptional conditions of the last couple of years have affected how we inhabit our lifestyle spaces. With the dawn of 2022, you may be thinking of giving your home a facelift to welcome the new year. We’ve investigated some of the coming trends.
124 www.ohlala-magazine.com
OHLALA
Homes
Maxi Vs Mini Minimalism has seen its ups and downs but the pandemic has brought out a new dimension of the trend. With remote working and social separation being a constant presence in our lives, traditional minimalist designs are harder to maintain. A growing demand for multifunctional spaces and versatility has encouraged a middle-ground between minimalism and maximalism, with more people allowing themselves the luxury of answering to their wants instead of simply their needs. And needs themselves have changed, especially with the onset of remote working and schooling. Homes have become not just homes, but schools, offices, gyms, study rooms and the like. With spaces needing to cater to different functions, 2022 will see every nook and cranny being utilised to meet our wants and needs.
Nature Conquers All “Perhaps because humanity has never needed the healing powers of nature more than we do at this moment, there is a quest to take this approach even deeper,” says Michael Lamb – editorial director of The Trend Curve. The past two years have seen an increasing want and care for nature, with natural colours and organic tones being paramount to feeling at ease in these troubled times. Lockdowns and closures have similarly inspired a return to nature’s many beauties and a reminder of the planet’s various tones, including olive greens, fresh blues and earthy auburn browns. Black and dark tones are taking centre stage as they add depth to minimalist designs and a return to natural tones.

Suitable Scents Designers and trendsetters, such as Lisa White, who previously curated the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, told AD PRO (an authoritative, opinionated editorial resource from @archdigest for design-world insiders) that scents will continue to have a strong presence in homes, with people looking to enrich the experience of their habitats through varying senses. “Perhaps the home office will be scented with sage to promote mental acuity, while the bedroom will be scented with orange blossom to promote calm and sleep, and the living room with something cosy and festive like the fragrance of a crackling fire,” she said. But beware, if you have pets, certain diffusers and other scent options, including some candles, can be extremely toxic to your furry friends. Likewise, if you opt to scent your home with real flowers, stay away from plants such as lilies and orchids which are also poisonous to many animals, even in very small amounts.
Sustainability Stories Due to current supply chain-induced shortages and a desire to support sustainability and the environment, it’s expected the coming year will see further calls to reduce, reuse and recycle those items we (or our friends) already have in our homes. Wildfires, atypical weather, such as floods, and climate urgency have sparked the demand for sustainable solutions. According to designers such as Rozit Arditi, of Arditi Design, 2022 will see a growing push to care for the environment and use upcycled waste materials and discarded objects. The past couple of years have also seen a surge in the number of sites selling pre-loved furniture and art online. One of our favourites is 1stdibs.com which features international sellers and individuals offering high-end pieces at a fraction of the normal price. They may not always ship to our part of the world but the site is great for inspiration.

Let There Be Light With lockdowns and a sense of tight spaces came the need for the presence of natural light and larger windows, blurring the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors. House plants have been a very welcome breath of fresh air, just when we needed them most, and they will continue to be so in the coming year. These leafy friends provide a lifeaffirming touch of green and serve as beautiful décor.
Comfort is King Gone, for now, are the days of edgy interiors. With the new normal came curved and comfortable and it’s here to stay. Curves in furniture design have long been accepted as providing a sense of security, from the arms and enveloping backs of our sofas (or, indeed, the whole sofa) to sculptural pieces that give a feeling of flow. Look out for more of these feminine features in 2022. Houston-based designer Dennis Brackeen speaking to Veranda (an American lifestyle magazine with its focus on homes) described curves as “a freedom from the feel of limitations within a rigorously structured space.”

Old is Gold Out goes the new, in comes the old. Writing desks and home Out goes the new, in comes the old. Writing desks and home libraries are re-entering the market, with people seeking out these old-fashioned trends. With a growing urge to be sustainable and a return to oldfashioned furniture comes the reuse of antiques, be it grandma’s old dining set or slivers of unique material. Not only does this support sustainability, it also adds personality to your home, showing a unique appreciation of the past and of history. New York-based interior designer Lilse McKenna told Veranda: “Our younger clients are more interested in buying antiques than ever before and, based on the supply-chain predictions we’re seeing now, I’m guessing this will only continue in 2022.”
Personal Touch “After spending so much time scrolling through Instagram over the past two years, I think we are all tired of spaces that are void of personality or look like copies of spaces we’ve seen before,” says Lilse McKenna. She predicts 2022 will see a rise in the evasion of common trends and a desire to explore more personalised spaces and expressive interiors, exchanging the customary Instagram interior décor for a more unique look. Colour Coordinated Kim Armstrong, of Kim Armstrong Interior Design, predicts the resurrection of the iconic red of the nineties as she examines a growing tendency for people to make bolder choices when it comes to the design of their homes. Not only is it striking, but red will always be one of those classic shades that makes anything look glorious and it can work with everything from casual to regal designs. 128 www.ohlala-magazine.com

eople used to gasp in awe when I told them that in my 17 years in the region, I had never visited the United Arab Emirates. Recently, despite the unpleasant travel restrictions that continue to tail us, Yas Island made it happen, and it was awesome! The flight was a piece of cake, even the unexpected PCR that we needed to do at Abu Dhabi International Airport was super quick and free of charge; we were out in no time to receive the warmest welcome from our accompanying driver. The arrival at W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island was eye-catching, to say the least. A shiny extraterrestrial structure calls on you from afar. Large glass doors

Two connected bedrooms, equipped with five-star amenities to deliver top quality comfort, would be our home for the next three days. The welcoming messages that we read on the mirrors suggested a casual and friendly approach and instantly formed a memory imprinted in our hearts. Three nights spent in luxury, three breakfasts served to perfection, and three dinners that translated premium culinary talent into pure gastronomic joy. Thumbs up! The three days, on the other hand, were packed with adventure and adrenalin overload.

A truly miraculous space that is extremely organised and welcoming. Before you leave, grab a token from one of the many WBW souvenir shops to keep the memories alive. The fun on day two was wet and loud at one of the world’s biggest water parks. The Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi experience was a great pleasure indeed! A huge space that will entertain your family for a full day, at the end of which you will not want to leave. A rush of happiness hormones takes over your body with the first slide and, like an addiction, you find yourself repeatedly climbing the same staircase asking for more. Transylvanian
Treasure Troves
Looking for a glorious getaway full of architectural history, abundant greenery and cultural beauty? Romania might just be the place for you! 142 www.ohlala-magazine.com
nown for its Transylvanian roots, this eastern European country is adorned with beautiful cathedrals and edifices rich with Ottoman, Saxon and Austro-Hungarian heritage, weaved with hidden natural marvels at every corner, and brimming with a prolific modern cultural atmosphere. The towns of Brasov, Sighisoara and Sibiu especially offer this ultimate blend of old and new, central and remote. Brasov A charming town in the middle of Romania surrounded by mountains, including the well-known Muntele Tampa, or Mountain Tampa, Brasov is known as a melting pot of culture, history and magnificent architecture. It was first founded in the 13th century and developed into one of the most important commercial towns in the region. Located 170km north of the capital city of Bucharest, it is home to the famous Black Church, one of the most beautiful sites of Gothic architecture and a must-see for anyone passing through this town. It was partially destroyed on many occasions, most notably by the Great Fire of 1689 whence it got its name. The restorations thereafter incorporated Baroque designs giving way to some of its Gothic beauty, which you will be able to observe. It has the largest collection of Oriental rugs in Europe, 110 to be precise, dating back to the 1400s and 1500s. You can get a ticket for 10 lei (around two Euros) for adults and 3 lei (a little more than a half Euro) for children at the shop next door, which also sells souvenirs, crafts and other items such as candles, notebooks, bookmarks and art sets.
www.ohlala-magazine.com 143
You may want to take a stroll through the main town square, sit by the fountain, and order a plate of Polenta – a traditional Romanian dish made of corn. Next, visit the Council House, originally a watchtower, which was built in the 15th century. Brasov is also home to Strada Sforii, or Rope Street – one of the narrowest streets in Europe, with a width of 1.32m. If you happen to pass by Strada Michael Weiss, look up at the windows of the yellow house on the corner. If you’re lucky, you will see the old lady perched there – a rather chatty character always busy talking to people down below on the street. While you are there, don’t forget to pass through the Graft Bastion located on the northwest side of the town’s fortress. You can take a stroll through the ramparts and enjoy the soothing sound of the brook running alongside, then climb the narrow steps up to the White Tower on the hill to catch a view of the town below. If you haven’t exercised for a while, this might be a bit of a trek, but it will be worthwhile! Speaking of high places, you may want to take a trip on the cable car going up to Mountain Tampa, where the popular Brasov sign stands
144 www.ohlala-magazine.com
overlooking the town. You also have the option of hiking to the top, but beware of the bears that lurk amidst the forest. If you are staying for a while in Brasov, you can take a 45-minute bus to the legendary Bran Castle from terminal two at the bus station. This 14th-century landmark of Transylvanian history is now popularly associated with Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The Irish writer famously never visited Bran; he depicted the castle merely based on a description of it. Tickets to this beautiful salute to Romanian history cost 45 lei (around nine Euros) for adults and 10 lei for children. Apropos castles, if you have a little more time, take the train to Sinaia, dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Carpathians’ and home to the exquisite Peleș Castle, a summer palace built in 1874 for King Carol I, that served as a residence for the royal family until 1947. It was the first castle to have electricity in Europe, and all its 160 rooms were individually designed. You can also take the Gondola Sinaia, the highest cable car in Romania, up to the Bucegi mountains at an altitude of 2,050m. The view is simply breathtaking, and if you’re there during winter, you can head towards the ski slopes for a fun day of skiing as well!

Sighisoara Take a three-hour train ride from Brasov to reach the little town of Sighisoara. Known for its rich Saxon history, laden with narrow labyrinthine cobbled lanes and lined with a myriad of coloured houses, this small town’s beauty can be observed in every nook and cranny. But the jewel in the crown has to be the 14th-century Clock Tower located at the heart of the town. After the fire of 1676, one of the gateways was converted into a prison, which you can see, along with the torture instruments used on prisoners. The balcony now offers a magnificent view of the town. A new Baroque-style roof was also built after the fire by Austrian architects, and both the clock mechanism and the little statues representing each day of the week were rebuilt, too.
Another beauty of this little town is the Scara Acoperita, or the Covered Stairway, built in 1654 as a safe passage for pupils to get to school on top of the hill. Still standing today, the 300-step wooden tunnel is a must-see for anyone adventurous. Once you reach the top, you will be able to visit the old school, as well as the church on the hill. The Breite Oak Tree Reserve is a hidden gem in this part of Romania: a 74-hectare haven of towering oak and hornbeam trees hundreds of years old. Located on the largest grassland plateau in Europe at an altitude of over 500m, this serene sanctuary is a 45-minute walk away, and a 20-minute car-ride away from Sighisoara.

Sibiu Sibiu provides a further look into the history of Transylvanian times, with classical buildings and architecture drenched in historical significance. While you are in this beautiful town, you don’t want to miss the Piata Mare or the Big Square, home to much of Sibiu’s rich heritage and yearround festivities. Head down there for a stroll and a relaxing afternoon with the pigeons, and make sure to visit the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, adorned with classic crimson, royal blue and gold architecture, similar to the colours of the Romanian flag. This 20th-century building incorporates a mix of neo-Byzantine, Baroque and Transylvanian styles. During World War I, three of its four bells were famously melted by the Austro-Hungarian empire to use as canons and were not replaced until 1926. The Pasajul Scărilor, or the Stairs Passage, that snakes through the town, is a peculiar historical treasure of Sibiu. The 13th-century meandering stairway umbrellaed with archways connects the town’s upper quarter, home to beautiful historical sights, and the lower quarter, fringed with vividly-coloured buildings. While at the Piata Mare, make a stop at the Brükenthal Museum, a treasure trove of Romanian history and art. It was named after Baron Samuel von Brükenthal, who was the only representative of the Saxon

community in Romania holding a position at the high office of the Austrian Empire in the 18th century. While in Vienna, the baron started collecting valuable paintings and other art, eventually holding one of the most valuable private collections. The museum features this collection and, over the years, has expanded to include other art collections as well as museums, including the European Art Gallery, the Museum of Natural History and the Pharmaceutical Museum. The ASTRA Museum located in the Dumbrava Forest is another mustsee. The open-air 96-hectare ethnographic museum is a prized spectacle for Romanians and an epitome of Transylvanian history. It depicts traditional rural life in the 18th and 19th centuries featuring conventional huts, mills and churches. The easiest way to get to this cultural refuge is a one-hour walk along the Pârâul Trinkbach River from the Piata Mare. Last but not least is Alba Iulia, another national gem and cherished historic site located on the Mureș River and an hour’s drive away from Sibiu. It was once the capital of the principality of Transylvania and in 1918 it was also the site where the unification of Transylvania and Romania was made official. Once you’ve admire this star-shaped historical locale, take a stroll in the town surrounding the fortress or rent a bike and zip through its many winding paths – just be careful not to smash into other tourists!

Located on the 50th floor of Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, re/ASIAN Cuisine brings Wolfgang Puck’s modern take on traditional Asian flavours. Liz O’Reilly took the fast elevator ride to check the unique menu and confirm that her most-loved dish was still there. 148 www.ohlala-magazine.com

L
et’s get this out of the way right at the start. I love re/ASIAN. Having sat with celeb Chef Wolfgang Puck in Dubai as he described his plans for this new concept, which was to debut in Bahrain, then attending the opening night, followed by many visits since, I would be remiss if I didn’t confess more than a little bias. The restaurant re-opened in September 2021 after being closed for 18 months due to Covid-19. It is now showcasing a renovated ambience and new items on the menu. The ride up to the 50th floor in the lift still made my ears pop, and nobody had moved the stunning view of the city skyline far below, so that was a good start. But, on entering, you will now encounter a glass-surrounded sushi bar with high stools, which were pretty much full the whole night. Once shown to our table and trying hard not to be mesmerised by that view, I ordered my all-time favourite of Spicy Tuna Tartare in Sesame Miso Cones. I have said before and will say again now, if I had to go to re/ASIAN and eat one thing all night, these would be it. Super-fresh raw tuna with chilli aioli topped with shaved bonito and encased in crispy cones. This dish, for me, is the food of the gods, the amazing bursts of complementary flavours coupled with the crunchy, salty sesame seeds is absolute perfection.

My dining companion is vegan and, on this score too, re/ASIAN didn’t disappoint. For every course there was a tasty alternative for her. No fuss whatsoever as our knowledgeable server, Vanessa, brought forth a selection of sushi rolls set on crispy rice, which was crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and well seasoned, and boasting toppings of asparagus, avocado, mushroom, baby carrot and, the star of this particular show, eggplant liberally flavoured with soy sauce. We had not asked in advance for vegan dishes, so this was particularly impressive – as was the silence from the other side of the table! Along with my cones, I had been ‘ordered’ to try the scallop ceviche. Well, my friend didn’t steer me wrong. He said I would love this, and I truly did. The thinly sliced seafood with miso, chillis and edible flowers was superb in both texture and flavour. More power to that new sushi bar – thus far we were loving it. Being a little greedy, we both ordered extra dishes before the mains. My companion went for the Steamed Bao with braised jackfruit and toasted chilli soy. The buns were so soft and deeply satisfying. I, meanwhile, had gone for the XO Shrimp Dumplings with crispy garlic, Chinese chives and fermented black beans. The sauce on these is slightly sweet made from fermented scallop and shrimp paste and it is truly the crowning glory, perfectly offset by the kick of the chives. Boasting plenty of chunky shrimp this would be a satisfying lunch dish with just a dessert. Then came the mains. Oh, the mains! I had gone for the signature Braised Beef Short Ribs Peanut ‘Rendang’ and, right away, I could see I’d made the perfect choice. Big chunks of four-hour-braised beef, redolent with the flavours and aromas of coconut milk, chilli, ginger, galangal, turmeric, garlic and more. My taste buds were in seventh heaven, the rich veins of fat running through the meat giving that extra succulence that allowed the flesh to literally melt in the mouth.
150 www.ohlala-magazine.com
My companion’s plate looked very similar to mine but, instead of the meat, bore large chunks of exceptionally well-presented tofu. Seared to perfection, it had absorbed the myriad of flavours from the seasoning and actually caused a little squeal of delight to escape her lips. She coupled it with rice noodles with a liberal serving of Shimeji mushrooms. We ended our feast with Mango Millefeuille with Kolak ice cream for me. This looked and tasted amazing, but the unexpected star was the Re/ Pavlova – a vegan meringue, made with aquafaba, served with coconut mousse, citrus cremeux and pineapple sorbet. If ever there was a reason to go vegan, this might well be it. A surprisingly tasty and satisfying dessert that looks great. You’d never know it was vegan if they didn’t tell you. So, did the revamped re/ASIAN Cuisine pass muster? Well, suffice to say, I’m going back next week, and the week after that…

BOLD TWISTS AND
SURPRISING FLAVOURS
Up above the Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa and into a realm of inviting and mysterious ambience, Sara Waddah entered Fusions by Tala, for a palatable experience.
152 www.ohlala-magazine.com
R
ecently crowned the winner at the debut edition of MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants Award 2022 as the Best Female Chef, we were beyond honoured to be invited to visit Fusions by Tala, where we experienced a five-course tasting menu made by the remarkable chef, Tala Bashmi, herself. Taking the culinary scene in Bahrain by storm since the opening of the dining space at the renowned five-star hotel, Tala Bashmi took it on herself to elevate Fusions into a quintessential venue. Walking through the restaurant, past the phenomenal terrace, and into the intimate dining room that was centred around an all-glass open kitchen, the restaurant was dimly lit and oozing mysteriousness and modernity from every angle. Sitting at the forefront of the restaurant, with our backs to a magnificent skyline view of the island (we were ultimately focused on the kitchen), I soaked in the entire restaurant and the attention to detail that brought the whole concept to life. Esperanza, the Restaurant Manager, introduced herself and told us a little about how our evening would go. Explaining that Chef Tala would be preparing a five-course menu for us, and how the dishes were all related to Middle Eastern cuisine, but in the restaurant’s very special fusion style. Our culinary experience started as we watched the chefs plate our dishes in harmony from where we were sitting. Serving us a freshly made, carefully placed, Seabream Carpaccio with hibiscus pickled radish and golden tobiko. Aesthetically pleasing as much as it was delicious, this was the perfect way to get our appetites going.

Our next dish was the Softshell Crab, which came with a side of cardamom pickled cabbage, Harissa honey and Mehyawa aioli – as advised by the chefs, when taking a bite we were sure to get everything in together to ensure the complete experience. Magnificent! We were also served the Lamb Parcels that were generously doused in dashi yoghurt, mint and sumac. All the different flavours not only made me extremely nostalgic and reminiscent for Friday afternoons at my grandmother’s house, but the way that the dishes were put together was particularly different, and yet still achieved what I could say was a bold twist on the staple Middle Eastern meal. Before we got carried away and excited to try out the main course of the journey, the attentive staff brought out sorbets to refresh our palates – and asked us to guess what we thought the flavours were. Definitely, a fruity and refreshing feeling, giving our taste buds a light nudge, the in-house prepared watermelon and yuzu sorbet took us by surprise but was also a focal point of our evening. As the taste of the sorbet still lingered in our mouths, we were ready to see what else the chef had in store for us. A popular dish that has been the talk of the island for months, I was beyond excited to finally be able to witness and experience, the Bamia Wagyu Beef Cheek. Not only was this dish reinterpreted, then elevated and brought forth in a completely different way from that we’ve grown accustomed to, but Chef Tala was truly able to turn the traditional okra stew into a whole new entreè. With tender beef cheeks, paired with tomato broth rice, and the okra appearing in the form of crispy glass, not only was I beyond impressed with the way the dish was orchestrated but beyond immersed in the entire feeling of consuming it.
154 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Still thinking about the tenderness of our last mouthful, our final and sweetest dish came out of the kitchen with the chef herself – her version of a deconstructed baklawa, accompanied by in-house made saffron ice cream, mango orange blossom gel, caramelised pistachio and crispy filo. Plated in a beautiful tower that was waiting to be toppled over, we smashed the filo whilst giggling with excitement as we enjoyed this exemplary finale. It can surely be said that food is the way into the hearts of many people, but when the food comes with a story, with a history, with a memory and with feelings, it’s without a doubt going to take up all the space. That is how I felt at the end of my dinner at Fusions by Tala. A cuisine that has been entangled in my life growing up, the chef and the team at Fusions by Tala have been able to perfectly capture the essence of Middle Eastern taste and take it to an avant-garde level that will, without a doubt, give the cuisine the love and attention that it so well deserves. Chef, I can’t wait to come back for more!

A Warm
Cultural Embrace
Magically headlining Block 338’s highest point at the Terminal building, Sara Waddah headed to Clay to explore a journey of heritage, that was all about embracing our differences.
156 www.ohlala-magazine.com
A
lavish restaurant that truly captures the essence of both Japanese and Peruvian cuisines, Clay Bahrain also brings forth and celebrates the two very different cultures in a space that is emotive, engaging and beyond Instagram-worthy. I had expected just a regular Tuesday night but I can honestly say that, from the moment we walked through the door, I was a little overwhelmed by the wonderful décor and ambience. With a warm and earthy colour scheme, the restaurant’s interior design certainly lives up to its identity. Everything was strategically created to emulate Japanese-Peruvian vibes, from wooden furniture to parquet flooring and marble tabletops. With a live DJ playing cool tunes by the already-busy terrace, my dining companions and I opted to sit inside (near the kitchen because we were ready to eat), where we were able to gaze at the different art installations as we prepared for an eventful dinner. Referred to as Nikkei, the cuisine they continue to explore at Clay was developed over many generations, inspired by the descendants of Japanese immigrants living in Peru. Focusing on bringing the best of both worlds, the freshest of Peruvian flavours are combined into dishes using Japanese techniques, concluding with an explosion of flavours.
www.ohlala-magazine.com 157
The talk of the town at Clay is the range of ceviches, and we were pleasantly surprised to see a Carretillera (type of ceviche street food) come out in one of the most charming, fancy-looking dishes I’ve come across. Almost too pretty to eat – the ceviche was prepared with yellow chilli, choclo corn and sweet potato purée, giving it a distinctive colour, all intended to be enjoyed together with a quinoa cracker. We also got to sample their new take on nigiri pairings: rice with scallops; rice with truffles and salmon; and rice with Foie Gras and tuna. The talented chefs behind the scenes offered a whole new perspective on how to enjoy these dishes using different flavours. And they had certainly mastered the art of food presentation. Next on the menu for us was the Short Ribs Steamed Niku Bao Buns. The buns were fluffier than ever and stamped with Clay’s name and the tender filling with the meat literally falling apart to the touch was particularly delightful thanks to the addition of the Criolla Salad, which gave a sense of something new and flavourful.
158 www.ohlala-magazine.com
The Tako Nikkei was a sheer work of art. From preparation to presentation (and even consumption), the grilled octopus was absolutely perfect and was complemented by a very special Chimichurri Nikkei sauce. All these different flavours were honoured beautifully, embracing two cultures in a single cuisine that I was slowly, but surely falling in love with. Another one of my favourite dishes was the Tori Al Grill, made with Peruvian yellow chilli paste and panca chilli paste, garlic confit, soy sauce, mustard and fresh oregano. This brings me back to my earlier point, that Clay has not only created a whole new take on some of our favourite dishes but consciously surprises us with the most complex of tastes in the simplest of forms. You know I can’t go anywhere without ending on a sweet note, and the Yuzu Cheesecake did that for me. An absolute staple classic taken to another level with the prime choice of ingredients and blended to offer a mouth-wateringly creamy and satisfying texture, My appetite sated, my soul elated and my senses heightened, this night provided a gastronomic journey that honoured the heritage of the Nikkei. I won’t forget it in a hurry and can’t wait to go back.

Meanwhile, Victoria quizzed Kirk about the challenges and joys of plant-based cooking. Victoria - You care to call your amazing food plant-based and not vegan. Can you define what you see as the difference between these terms? Kirk - Plant-based has always felt the correct definition for us at Plates as it better describes the space we create in and feels more inclusive for our different audiences that are not all vegans. Veganism can mean more than just the food. It’s a lifestyle often involving choices that go beyond food and drink. Victoria - Is the vegan diet inherently healthier than other ways of eating? And do you think it’s right for everyone? Kirk - There can be an unhealthy approach to all food genres, so I don’t think being vegan is healthier by default. However, when done right, eating a vegan diet is beneficial, but it needs to be researched and [if you’re new to it] well planned out to give you all your body needs. It does take extra effort to include all nutrients in a vegan diet and keep it interesting, but the rewards are plenty. Diet is personal and unique, so I can’t say it’s right for everyone. Being a healthy vegan takes passion and effort. I believe what is good for everyone, is starting to incorporate more hearty plantbased meals and days into your diet and more people realising these wonders for themselves and the planet. Victoria - What are your three favourite plants to cook with? Kirk – Beetroots, artichokes and onions. Victoria - What was the single hardest non-plant food that you gave up? Kirk - I’d say shellfish – scallops particularly, they were my favourites. Victoria - Why do you think that plant-based [vegan] eating is gaining such popularity? Kirk - I think because people are caring for the planet and nature a lot more. They’re equally aware of the importance of taking care of their own health [mind and body] and overall well-being. These things all work together holistically, and it’s driving the popularity of plant-based as a genre and vegan as a way of life.

This year, get inspired to embrace a healthier lifestyle with Kirk Haworth’s plantbased dish Herbaceous Pancake with pickled beetroot and chickpea aioli.
Herbaceous Pancake (makes six)
Ingredients: 100g gluten-free plain flour 10g chickpea flour 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 10g fresh parsley 10g rocket leaves 2g fine salt 1tbsp olive oil 200ml water Method:
Add all the ingredients into a food processor until green and smooth, about two minutes. Pour the content into a medium-sized mixing bowl. Put a non-stick frying pan on high heat and, using a pastry brush, lightly coat the pan with sunflower oil, add one small ladle full of the mixture to the hot pan and cook for around one to two minutes. Using a flexible spatula from the outside of the pancake, work your way around and gently flip onto the other side. Cook for another one to two minutes, turning down the heat by half. Take the pancake out of the pan gently onto a tray lined with parchment paper. Allow to cool, then using the largest sized cutter, cut out a nice clean circle and store the pancakes in the fridge in an airtight container lined with parchment paper.

Baked and Pickled Beetroot (serves six)
Ingredients: 2 large beetroots 1 tbsp olive oil 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1 pinch salt 100ml apple cider vinegar Method:
Preheat the oven to 190° Celsius or alternatively use a barbecue grill. Cut out a square of parchment paper and tin foil - 25cm by 25cm. Place the beetroot in the centre of the parchment paper with the tin foil underneath. Add the oil, thyme and a pinch of salt to the beetroot and wrap tightly in the foil. Put in the oven and roast for around one hour. Take out of the oven, and with a small knife, pierce the beetroot to check if it is tender. The knife should go through the beetroot with ease. Allow cooling at room temperature for around one hour. Using gloves, peel the beetroot skin off with your hands; this should peel easily whilst the beetroot is still warm (do not put it in the fridge until skin is peeled). Using your hands, naturally break the beetroot into random sized chunks around two by two centimetres. Thinly slice the half of a raw beetroot and dress with the apple cider vinegar, pinch of salt and olive oil for the pickled version.
Chickpea Mayo (serves six)
Ingredients: 80ml aquafaba (chickpea water) 100ml sunflower oil 60ml olive oil 1 clove roast garlic pureed 1tbsp lemon juice 1tsp apple cider vinegar ¼tsp xanthan gum salt Method:
Place the aquafaba in a kitchen aid bowl, add the xanthan gum and garlic. Start to whip up using a whisk until it starts to come to a soft peak, then slowly begin adding both oils as you would in a mayonnaise. Once all oil is added slowly and it is at a mayonnaise-like texture, firm but light, add all of the remaining ingredients with a pinch of salt to taste, and then store in a squeezy bottle. Wash the chickpeas left in the can, dry them at 46° Celsius overnight, and store them in an airtight container. Victoria’s top tip for 2022: Take some time to stop and listen to your body when you ’feed’ it. Your body [not mind] knows what is good for it, so look inside and take note of what makes you feel truly good.

THE ALL-NEW
ASTON MARTIN DBX ASTON MARTIN ENTER THE LUXURY SUV SEGMENT IN STYLE.
174 www.ohlala-magazine.com
F
or many years now, OHLALA Magazine has been inspecting and test driving some of the finest cars available in the market, however, every once and a while we get to experience something that is not only new, but exceptional in nature. This month, thanks to the professional team at Adamas Bahrain Motors, we were fortunate enough to spend some quality time with Aston Martin’s all new creation, the DBX. After no less than 106 years of motor vehicle development, the master craftsmen and women of this world-renowned brand have finally entered the lucrative luxury SUV segment and, by the looks of things, they don’t plan on competing, they intend on taking over.
As we approached the DBX for the first time, the aerodynamic nature of the exterior design was immediately obvious. Aston Martin has utilised all of its sports car building experience as well as computational aeroacoustics technology in the creation of this stunning SUV. Starting at the signature ‘DB’ front grille and flowing through the sculptured sides to the tailgate flip, the lines of this vehicle are truly immaculate. Further adding to the streamlined structure of the car are the integrated ducts on the daytime running lights which channel air through the front wheel arches and along the sides, assisting in both drag reduction and cooling of the brakes.
"Aston Martin has utilised all of its sports car building experience as well as computational aeroacoustics technology in the creation of this stunning SUV.”

At the flanks, numerous aesthetically pleasing details have been integrated into the design, including the hidden side glass seals on the frameless doors complete with flush-fit door handles. At the back end, the signature rear light blade along with the rear aero wing finish off the exterior with a flourish. All these design features, along with many others including the stylish clamshell bonnet with twin vents, 22-inch sport design wheels as well as aluminium and composite body panels, contribute towards the DBX’s outstanding good looks. The inspirational design of the DBX continues on the inside of the vehicle. We were greeted by 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with memory function that not only provide long-distance comfort as well as support reminiscent of sports car seating, but extra internal space thanks to their slim and svelte structure. This provides the rear seating with extra legroom to go along with the vehicle’s class-leading rear headroom.
176 www.ohlala-magazine.com
The dashboard further accentuates the sense of space and luxury in the DBX, with each dial and button perfectly positioned for maximum efficiency and convenience. The freshly designed sport steering wheel, equipped with new switchgear and large paddles, features an electric steering column tilt and reach adjustment. The bridged centre console has been elegantly incorporated into the layout of the capacious cabin and offers storage space for larger items. The luggage compartment with its 632 litres of space is perfect for transporting suitcases, golf bags or whatever else may be required and comes standard with a power tailgate with gesture control.
www.ohlala-magazine.com 177
Premium materials such as soft leather, walnut wood, glass and bronze have been used throughout, enhancing the luxurious feel of this quality SUV. We highly appreciated the level of effort that goes into the interior of the DBX, with more than 200 hours of dedicated hand-stitching, handcrafting and hand-assembly going into the trimmings and finishes. There is also a choice of 35 colours and materials to select from. The DBX houses an abundance of technology, including a high definition, 10.25-inch screen in the centre console, a large 12.3-inch TFT screen for the driver, along with a multitude of assistance and safety features. These include a 360° surround camera system, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), ISOFIX child seat attachments, airbags throughout and so much more. All these inclusions ensured we felt completely safe as we prepared to put the DBX through its paces on the busy city streets.
178 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Drives
Starting up the DBX’s powerful 4.0-litre V8 Twin Turbo engine caused our excitement levels to rise substantially. Able to produce 542bhp at 6,500rpm and 700Nm of torque at 2,200-5,000rpm, this Aston Martin is far more than just a pretty ride. The DBX can surge from 0-100km/h in around 4.5 seconds and boasts a top speed of 291km/h. Not bad for a vehicle weighing in at just under two-and-a-half tons. This powerful setup is greatly enhanced through the nine-speed automatic gearbox, the new adaptive triple volume air suspension, the new 48-volt electric anti-roll control system as well as the new terrain driving modes for both on- and off-road.

t’s been 20 years since the successful launch of the modern MINI, with the brand still enjoying solid sales on these well-loved vehicles. The MINI brand has become known for its agile driving capabilities, high technology standards and overall superior quality compared to many other competitors in its segment. Now this beloved British brand has evolved into the latest model generation, with the MINI three-door, MINI five-door and MINI Convertible all being given an intensive makeover. This month, we at OHLALA Magazine
were handed the keys to our very first MINI experience, compliments of the outstanding team at Euro Motors. We were fortunate enough to be offered the MINI three-door John Cooper Works (JCW) Edition for the day. The JCW models are high-performance vehicles, fitted with superior engines, interiors and performance capabilities, along with unique exteriors. The MINI’s new front design displays the characteristic hexagonal radiator grille, an enlarged black surround as well as the hallmark round MINI headlights. These headlights are LED and are now fitted as standard.

Typical MINI proportions and short overhangs define the view of the flanks, whilst the freshly designed, characteristic side scuttles compliment the new body colours, including the 18-inch, Circuit Spoke Black Design, JCW light-alloy wheels. The rear apron too has been upgraded in looks, with LED back lights in the Union Jack design now fitted as standard. The original multitone roof and matching exterior mirror caps are beautiful to look at and amongst the most striking features of the vehicle. All-in-all, we found the exterior to be aesthetically pleasing and well put together.
182 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Internally, our JCW model housed a stylish, comfortable and wellequipped cabin. The supportive sport seats provide a great driving position, whilst the quality materials, finishes and trimmings used throughout the interior are usually to be found in a vehicle with a much higher price tag. The JCW trim also features a nappa leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and larger thumb rests, JCW door sill trims, an anthracite-coloured roof liner and stainless-steel pedals. Eccentric elements have also been incorporated into the interior design such as the LED light ring framing the central instrument.
www.ohlala-magazine.com 183
This MINI’s 8.8-inch colour touchscreen display comes complete with SiriusXM satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, touch-sensitive ‘favourite buttons’, Piano Black high-gloss surfaces as well as Bluetooth phone and streaming audio. A multifunctional instrument display, five inches in diameter, is present behind the steering wheel and displays all drivingrelevant information, check-control messages and status displays of the driver assistance systems. Additionally, the operating system controller situated on the centre console now sports an all-black surface along with a navigation system. A choice of two colour schemes for the central instrument and digital cockpit displays can be accessed through the control system menu. Performance wise, the MINI John Cooper Works is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four, petrol engine. Combined with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, this zippy vehicle produces 231hp or 170kW. This allows the MINI JCW to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds and to deliver a top speed of 246km/h. Boasting adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes and an electrically locking front differential, this exceptional compact car delivers precise handling and a go-kart feeling experience.

Drives In fact, we spent several hours embracing the sporty feel of this road-hugging vehicle, never without a huge smile on our faces. The JCW comes with a Driver Assistance Package with an extended range of functions. These functions ensure maximum comfort and safety and include new lane departure warning, new Active Cruise Control (now featuring a stop and go function) and standard
automated emergency braking. Thanks to consistently optimised emission control technology, all model variants comply-with the Euro 6d emission standard. Our first experience in the new three-door MINI JCW Edition was thoroughly enjoyable and we can honestly say that the fun factor of this magnificent little machine is amongst the highest we have ever experienced.

Looking FORWARD Whether you think about it or not, this feeling is part of everyone’s life – we all wish for something, and this positive emotion helps us get there.
KAROLINA GRABOWSKA ON PEXELS
Hope – the word that we carry close to our hearts at the start of every New Year. A feeling that tells you the future can bring better days and helps you keep moving. A positive sensation that reduces the state of helplessness, increases happiness and reduces stress, resulting in improved quality of life. Charles Richard Snyder was an American psychologist who specialised in positive psychology and created Snyder’s Hope Theory. The word hope in his studies means the ability to stay motivated when walking certain paths leading to the desired destination. Snyder believed that much of human behaviour is goal-oriented, so hope and specific objectives walk hand in hand. According to him, to develop a feeling of hope, you need to have focused thoughts; you must develop strategies in advance in order to reach your goals and be motivated to make the effort required to successfully attain them. The more you believe in your ability to achieve these components, the greater are the chances of developing this feeling. Use this moment of new beginnings to develop hope in you. Create goals, think positive and don’t let setbacks destroy your dreams. You might have to adapt your wishes and the ways to conquer them along the way, but don’t lose your will. You can do this!
