JOHANNA LIHIORTIZ HOD

Editor’s Letter And in the blink of an eye, 2021 is ending faster than we could ever have imagined. A year when vaccines were the topic of every chat and billionaires decided to take over space. After a 2020 without much social interaction due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2021 saw us going back to face-to-face meetings. And this month, parties are filling our calendars, which means you will probably celebrate the holiday season with family and friends. To help you out with your Christmas shopping list, we put together a gift guide that lets you please all the different ladies in your life (pg56) – you’re welcome! Our Style Focus pages bring the best picks for the festive period and accessories to wear on the cooler days (pg14). We also love all that sparkles, coloured watches and Arabic-inspired jewellery are this month’s picks (pg34). And what is fashion’s BFF? Beauty! We are all about new make-up palettes and lipsticks (pg38). However, embarking on pampering and beautifying treatments are our favourite things. We visited a beauty haven for the perfect end-of-the-year look (pg48) and waved goodbye to all the stress and muscle knots in a well-deserved massage session (pg52). We end our December issue dining at a revamped eatery that offers a journey into Italian flavours (pg84). And for our monthly test drive, we had the pleasure of driving an impressive SUV (pg94). We wish wish you a Happy National Day, a magical Christmas and a New Year filled with happy days!

The fashion world is aware of its importance in backing new talents and Alexander McQueen has just announced its support to the A Team Arts Education in London's East End. The organisation assists young people that aspire to enter arts and design careers. "It feels especially important for us to be able to take part in supporting young people from the East End of London, where Lee Alexander McQueen grew up. At this house, we all know that talent comes from everywhere, irrespective of their background," says Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen's Creative Director. Over the coming year, the brand will support A Team Arts Education financially and further extend the workshops and classes with the young people and teachers it began as a pilot during 2020.

For the first time, MICHAEL Michael Kors is partnering with the 007 film franchise. The collaboration brings a capsule of limited-edition, co-branded products and a 360° marketing campaign. The MMK x 007 line features an all-new black and gold signature logo print to showcase the glamour and adventures synonymous with the Bond enterprise and the Michael Kors brand. The collection brings 11 pieces, from handbags and luggage to swimwear and footwear. Starring Bella Hadid and model Cindy Bruna, the campaign video conjures an air of intrigue and Bond-themed irresistibility. Shot on location at The Ocean Club, Bahamas – the same destination seen in the 007 Casino Royale film – it shows Bella Hadid enjoying a luxury solo getaway. Of course, in the world of James Bond, nothing is ever as it seems.

Dancing Letters Inspired by Arab culture, Chopard is adding delicate necklaces to its Happy Diamonds collection.

34

www.ohlala-magazine.com

C

hopard’s iconic Happy Diamonds collection is expanding; a new series of rose gold pendants combining dancing diamonds with 11 letters of the Arabic alphabet is now part of the dangling diamond family. The Happy Diamonds – Happy Me capsule is a tribute to one of the richest written languages in the world. Arab culture has influenced Chopard to present

its Happy Diamonds pendant in an exclusive line honouring the Arabic writing system. Letters symbolise interpersonal communication and the development of modern civilisations. With this capsule, Chopard recalls its bond to this ancient culture, synonymous with knowledge, enlightenment and openness to the world. The designs bring a pendant in ethical 18-carat rose gold graced with a perfectly round shape symbolising wisdom, also made of ethical

18-carat rose gold and topped with a diamond. At the heart of the circle, two sapphire crystals set the stage for the three dancing diamonds, and a letter-charm in ethical 18-carat rose gold completes the jewellery pieces. The symbols correspond to the first letters of the most popular Arabic female names: Alif, Shīn, Sīn, Dāl, Khā, Fā, Hā, Nūn, Mīm, Lâm and Yā’. Together they twirl in a dance of joy, imparting a resolutely feminine style.

Chopard collections are available at Chopard Boutique, Moda Mall. For more information, please call 1752 0088. @chopard @bahrainjewellerycentre

Elegant Timepieces New colours and gemstone combinations are joining Audemars Piguet's iconic Royal Oak Selfwinding family. 36

www.ohlala-magazine.com

T

he Swiss watch manufacturer is expanding its 15452 series with two new Royal Oak Selfwinding models in 37mm. The iterations are crafted in white or pink gold and meticulously set with diamonds and colourful gemstones, while the guilloche dial incorporates new grey or beige hues. Two new matching, satin-finished, calfskin leather straps give the final touch to the watches' original aesthetic – beige for the pink gold version and light grey for the white gold. The gold bezel is adorned with 40 brilliant-cut gemstones for a smooth and harmonious gradation. The stones have been individually cut and polished to present clear and sharp angles before being set by hand on the bezel. They reflect light to create unique optical effects, ranging from red and orange tints to pink hues, depending on the model.

The case of the 18-carat pink gold model is paved with 124 brilliant-cut diamonds down to the bracelet connecting studs. The new beige hue of the Grande Tapisserie dial echoes the pink gold case for contemporary flair. The two pink gold applied hour markers at 12 o'clock are also set with brilliant-cut diamonds. For its part, the pink gold bezel is embellished with 40 yellow sapphires, red garnets and orange spessartite garnets. This vivid gradation – a first for Royal Oak – adds a warm and bright touch. The 18-carat white gold case and connecting studs of the second reference are also set with 124 brilliant-cut diamonds. The rhodium-toned dial is enhanced by a Grande Tapisserie pattern and applied 18-carat white gold hour markers and hands. The white gold bezel is set with 40 brilliant-cut pink sapphires and rubies, offering a refined and subtle gradation to contrast with the watch's monochromatic aesthetic.

Your Lips The CHANEL Makeup Creation Studio brings new shades to its Rouge Allure collection – the Rouge Allure Laque and Rouge Allure Ink Fusion.

I

t’s lipstick’s time to shine, and CHANEL has introduced a collection of intense shades to its cult-favourite lip colours, Rouge Allure Laque and Rouge Allure Ink Fusion. A total of 12 unique new hues are added to the line. In a single stroke, the long-wearing tinting tool hugs the curves of the lips, delivering a perfect colour and intensity. The water-resistant formulas stand up to the rubbing and smudging of daily wear. A blend of finely ground pigments coated in oils allows the lipstick to reveal its full strength, displaying an

extremely pure glow. The shades vary from pinks and red tones moving to brown tints. Our favourite picks are Beige Confidentiel with its burnt coral shade and Brun Mystérieux in a chocolate brown finish. Rouge Allure Laque is the first CHANEL liquid lip hue with a satin shine finish, while Rouge Allure Ink Fusion delivers an intense matte look. With these two options, women can adapt their make-up to their own style and paint their lips in the way that pleases them the most.

Look into My Eyes

Fans of the House of Gucci can now celebrate the brand's first eyeshadow palette – the Palette Beauté Des Yeux Floral.

D

esigned for year-round wear, the Palette Beauté Des Yeux Floral brings 12 satin, matte and metallic shades to create endless looks for your eyes. Each hue symbolises love, sympathy, joy and happiness to reflect the feelings flowers bring into our lives. The highly pigmented palette is easy to apply and blend. The eyeshadows are soft to the touch and include three different textures. The three metallic shades are silk-soft and offer a fabric-like, chrome finish that brightens the appearance of the eyes and creates a radiant effect. When applied to the eyelids, the two satin shades transform into an ultra-thin, coloured film and deliver a sophisticated silky result with a velvety finish. The seven matte shades glide on smoothly for a flawless and densely pigmented finish.

42

www.ohlala-magazine.com

The case is designed with a gold trim featuring a vintage-inspired floral pattern on a black background, reflecting the palette's name. Encased in square pockets, all shades and their names are inspired by flowers, from a matte light blue aster to a metallic purple iris. As different flowers bloom in different seasons, the palette reflects their colours, from autumnal reds and rich browns to the bright and bold shades that signal the beginning of spring. The palette's removable tray means that the case can be transformed into a standout piece, such as a jewellery box, once the eyeshadows are finished. Or you can replace them with a refill tray that will be launched soon. @guccibeauty

Gold Touch

Guerlain’s make-up collection is covered in golden sparkles to light up the year-end festivities.

T

o celebrate the festive season, Guerlain’s new beauty tools appear to be pollinated with gold in brand-new joyful shades to enhance eyes, complexions and smiles. The Mad Eyes Shadow Duo stick reveals two new iridescent and sophisticated eyeshadow palettes: a plum and gold pairing to give the eyes a subtle touch of warmth; and a luminous icy grey and silver duo for a dazzling look. The Mad Eyes Brow Framer is an eyebrow gel pen that adorns brows in a tinted shade suitable for all skin tones. It has been infused with fine golden pearls to open the eyes and offer brows a bright finish. Conveying all the magic of Christmas, Guerlain’s iconic Météorites brings giant pink and golden holographic pearls to transform your complexion with exceptional radiance. The legendary terracotta powder commemorates its bestselling 03 shade in a new glimmering festive design. As if sculped with gold sequins, the skin is boosted with a sunny glow even during winter.

Painting the lips, the two new shades, Gold Red and Gold Brick add a golden twist to the brand’s Rouge G famous reds. Delicately infused into the lipstick, gold pigments add vibrancy to the line’s intense and brick red. Once applied to the lips, the marbled lipstick bullet adds subtle sparkle to the smile. The cases are adorned in a decorative sequined trim with two exclusive sets – golden and red and silver and gold duets. However, the jewel of the 2021 festive collection is a limited edition of the Rouge G lipstick. The case has been crafted by the Atelier Baqué Molinié and brings a bee woven entirely from gold thread, embroidered with glittering beads and sewn onto a delicate, padded velvet fishnet backdrop. This bespoke creation pays homage to the emblem of the house and the virtuosic talent of all those who have been crafting luxury at Guerlain ever since its creation. A jewellery masterpiece, the case is presented in a prestige gift set, accompanied by the bestselling n°214 shade – a flamboyant, satiny red.

L

ancôme has reinvented its matte lipstick with a new formula, new pack, and new shades – welcome the L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink. Promising a unique matte experience with a long-lasting, second skin semi-matte that instantly becomes one with your lips, L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink represents the next saga in the brand’s mission to recreate matte. The innovative lip ink comes in 17 new and existing shades, from intense reds to subtle nudes. It is made with water-in-oil emulsion, a four-times thinner film than a traditional lipstick with a two times more pigmented effect. In defiance of matte convention, the ultrathin texture gives you a bare lip feeling for all-day comfortable wear. The inks create a dramatic impact without the usually uncomfortable feeling that these products tend to leave on the lips. The line brings highly pigmented colours with a weightless sensation and a foolproof application in one stroke. The new formulation meets luxury packaging. A distinctly, feminine frosted bottle with a black satin top is set on a golden pedestal portraying its membership of the L’Absolu Rouge family. Accompanying the design, a petal applicator delivers the right dose of product for perfectly defined lips. To complete the revamped pack, the Lancôme rose emblazons the cap in a new, curved motif.

GLOWING SEASON

December is a month full of social gatherings culminating with end-of-year parties. OHLALA’s editor headed to Dessange Paris Bahrain for a stunning look for the holidays.

48

www.ohlala-magazine.com

T

he Christmas lights are on, and the end-of-year gatherings are marked on the calendar – all you need to do is get ready for the season’s celebrations. Apart from sorting your outfits, beautiful hair and nails are mandatory add-ons for the perfect final touch to your looks. And there is no better place to get different hairstyles and eye-catching nails than Dessange Paris Bahrain – the go-to haven for all your beauty needs. My monthly visit is always one that brings me happiness. This is a place where I feel well cared for and where I know I will leave feeling fabulous every time (either for a look transformation or relaxation reasons). Eva, the lovely salon manager, asked me to let my nails grow as long as possible for incredible fingertips. Due to a lot of hand washing, sanitising and lack of discipline, I must confess, my nails weren’t in their best shape. To make them look less damaged and help them grow longer, I made sure I was applying the solar oil Amy, Dessange’s senior nail artist, had recommended on a previous visit. To embrace the festive period, the team at Dessange worked on my hair and nails for a red-carpet look. We started with a hair treatment before moving forward to the styling part. At Dessange, your hair and scalp are treated seriously. Joanne, my hair therapist that day, checked my tresses’ state before opting for the PhytoDess treatment for hair damage. The line offers professional hair and scalp care using formulas primarily made from natural ingredients. Joanne looked like an alchemist mixing and matching products to suit my normal scalp and parched, bleached tresses. The treatment started with the application of the Huile Précieuse Or essential oil to my scalp, followed by Terre Précieuse Or clay, which brings a delicate balance between gold extract, specially chosen essential oils and yellow clay to help stabilise and cleanse scalp and hair. It also helps to moisturise, regenerate, retexture and strengthen the hair fibre. The treatment stayed in place for 15 minutes.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

49

Meanwhile, she applied the Crème Au Miel Et à L’Immortelle mask on the length, perfect for dry hair. This pre-shampoo care is a sensory delight enriched with honey, everlasting flower and babassu oil. The product works like cement on the hair fibre, leaving it soft and strong with regained body. Applied lock by lock to the length and ends; it also stayed in my hair for about 15 minutes. At this point, a delightful head massage was performed to relieve stress, reduce tension, improve circulation and promote hair growth. Time was up, and we moved to the washing area. I know I have mentioned this before, but it is always good to remember that the hair basin chair has a massage system imbued, and all you have to do is sit back and relax. The Shampooing à L’Edelweiss is a delicate shampoo enriched with edelweiss extract that gently washes the hair leaving it hydrated – it had an incredible smell that I could sense even under my mask. The Tiger Nut Oil Mask followed the perfumed wash to condition my distressed and unruly hair. I was then ready for Khoutar, the stylist’s, final touch. It was amazing to see the difference in my hair texture. I have very curly hair, and blow-dries don’t always look so good, but having it done after this ultra-restorative treatment for significantly damaged hair, looked fantastic. It was bouncy and soft, and I felt like I could easily be featured in one of those fancy shampoo advertising campaigns.

To finalise the diva look, Jeany started treating my nails; cutting, filing, and polishing. The quick hand massage touched a few points that were quite sore. The constant act of holding my mobile phone and typing at my computer affects not only my arms and shoulders but also my hands. Jeany told me to put some pressure on the aching points from time to time to help release the tension. It’s celebration time! And to embrace the season, my nails were painted in

bright, vivid red with some white artistic touches done by Amy. In December, we have Bahrain National Day and Christmas, so there’s nothing better than having these colours painted on your fingertips to complement your looks. The feeling of looking our best is one we always expect when leaving a beauty salon. And every time I say goodbye to the ladies at Dessange and step outside their splendid villa, I feel more confident, with higher selfesteem and consequently, happier!

SPA Spotlight

W

alking through the doors of Heavenly Spa by Westin, I don’t think I’ve ever felt more ready for some pampering in my life. Just recently, I’ve felt as if I was aching almost down to my bones – though I hate to say it, age (and possibly a few too many late nights) coupled with the challenge of a very energetic new puppy to walk and train are taking their toll. On arrival, I was met by my therapist, Sara, who showed me to the spacious changing area where I donned the obligatory fluffy robe and slippers – I just love the luxurious robes you find at any good spa, I have exactly the same thing at home but it never feels quite the same. From there, Sara led me down a dark wood-clad hallway, lined with flickering candles that added to the cocoon-like feeling of comfort and, almost, protection – you just know that, no matter how unpleasant the treatment might seem, you’re in a safe place. And, though I was simply booked for a massage, the rictus in my back did, indeed, make it an initially uncomfortable experience. With the usual instruction to lie face down, I realised that I was, in fact, unable to do so without significant pain in my lower back. Sara solicitously placed pillows beneath my head and knees to make me more comfortable and then gently administered a special heat-giving oil, rubbing it in with firm strokes and then moving on to concentrate on my feet and lower legs, to allow it to work its magic. And work it did. In about 10 minutes I was able to comfortably lie flat and enjoy the rest of my treatment.

SPA Spotlight Unusually, on this occasion I had requested special attention to my ankles and lower legs which were feeling incredibly tight (thanks puppy). Having warmed and cleaned my feet with a moist heated towel, Sara got down to business. Using a generous helping of Heavenly Spa’s own special signature oil – for December there are treatment offers using a seasonal, apple-scented mix – my ankles were turned and manipulated, Sara’s fingers digging into the tendons and releasing a lot of built-up tension. Moving onto my calves, I was expecting pain but the therapist continually checked with me that the pressure level was not causing discomfort and, using incredibly gentle strokes, she managed, once again, to significantly loosen my muscles to such an extent that I no longer felt pain in an area that had been troubling for some weeks. My back and neck were the next targets which, to be honest, I was not looking forward to. But with long, even strokes and fairly strong but measured pressure, I could feel the earlier tensions easing. Sara’s agile fingers and years of training came into play to find knots in my neck that

even I didn’t know were there, leaving me with an unfamiliar, but very welcome, feeling of lightness. At the end of my massage, I can honestly say I felt like a different person to the one who originally walked through the door at Heavenly Spa. My aching joints and seriously stressed muscles now felt light and my movements were so much easier that I actually had a spring in my step as I headed for the relaxation room to enjoy herbal tea and sweet cookies. So, a big thank you to The Westin City Centre Bahrain and also to lovely Sara. You really made my day. On the

Scholastic Path We end 2021 speaking to Professor Yusra Mouzughi, President of the Royal University for Women (RUW), about education and women’s empowerment.

66

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Voices “Work with passion, believe in the education cause and, most importantly, be humble enough to believe that we are all still learning.” – Professor Yusra Mouzughi OHLALA - You have been building your career in the academic sector for over 20 years, focusing on higher education. Can you tell us how this exciting journey started and how it has been unfolding? Professor Yusra Mouzughi - In fact, this is my second career. I worked in the insurance industry in the UK for a period, and this was the catalyst for starting my PhD where I looked into the critical success factors for Knowledge Management in the Financial Services sector. From there, I started doing some teaching and progressed my career into programme management, programme development and academic leadership. Having grown up and lived in the UK for over 34 years and more recently moved to the Gulf in the last five years, I feel that my journey has been enriched with an understanding and appreciation of two very different cultures and educational ecosystems. I must say, though, I ‘fell’ into the education field; however, it is the thing I have enjoyed the most throughout my life and being able to see the impact of your work on individuals and broader societies is so rewarding. OHLALA - What was the biggest challenge you faced during your career? Professor Yusra - When I was finishing my PhD and working full-time in teaching, I was involved in a major road traffic accident that took me out of work for more than a year. I was in a wheelchair for over four months and on crutches for another two. With a very young family and husband who worked in London while I lived in Liverpool, the logistics of daily life became very challenging and simple day-to-day activities took meticulous planning and preparation. Being away from the work scene for so long obviously impacted my progression at the time. Despite the challenges, I felt this gave me a new and different perspective on the importance of support mechanisms – especially for working mothers – as well as an opportunity to reflect on my priorities in life. Thankfully, I went on to make a full recovery but the learnings gained during that time have stayed with me.They have made a lasting impression on how I relate to challenges, particularly those facing working mothers. OHLALA - And what were the most significant successes? Professor Yusra - I feel blessed to have had a number of highlights in my life. When I was in the UK higher education sector, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to set up and lead the Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) programme at the university where I worked. This was a brand-new programme in an emerging area of education. With a dedicated team and a clearly differentiated vision, the programme went on to be a great success and, to this day, I am still in touch with many of the students who participated in it. More recently, when I was in Oman, I am honoured to say that I was the first (and remain the only) female Vice-Chancellor/President of a university. This was a great accolade and one that I will always be very proud of. I am also very conscious of the responsibility that goes with this accomplishment in terms of role modelling for other women in academia, but I hope that it will inspire others to believe in themselves and aim for the top.

OHLALA - You joined the RUW in May 2021; it is a relatively new role. What is it like being part of the RUW family? What are the highlights of the university for you? Professor Yusra - RUW is a truly special place because it has a unique mission dedicated to the advancement of women, supported by the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), with whom we have a strong and strategic partnership. This is a global agenda recognised internationally with a UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG #5) dedicated to Gender Equality. Therefore, we feel we are not simply serving RUW but serving a much bigger cause. This common cause creates an exceptional feel and atmosphere among RUW staff and students, and this is one of the things I picked up as soon as I arrived – there is a real sense of loyalty and commitment to the university. Our quality drive is translated into successful daily stories when we see our graduates and alumnae lead exciting, rewarding and inspiring careers in all walks of life. This makes me really happy and is a constant reminder of how blessed I am to be in a job I love. OHLALA - You were in Oman before moving to Bahrain, which means that you haven’t been living in the Kingdom for too long. However, what are your favourite things here so far? Professor Yusra - I came to Bahrain in mid-May, so still relatively new but, luckily, I arrived at a period when we were going back into a sense of normality with many activities and events being re-launched after the Covid-19 lockdowns. What has really caught my attention is the vast range of activities in the Kingdom at any given time. This is especially the case now that the weather is getting cooler. I always feel that there is lots to do and many cultural and entertainment activities to suit all tastes – my favourite so far has been the Pearling Path in Muharraq because it really sheds light on the rich history of Bahraini trade and international relations. I must admit that I am a great coffee lover, and I have been impressed by the number of really nice and trendy coffee shops in Bahrain. I am slowly making my way around these and creating my list of favourite spots! OHLALA - What would be your words of advice to those looking to grow their careers in the academic field? Professor Yusra - Academic life is a rewarding and fulfilling journey of self-discovery, contribution and growth. Being around students in an environment where knowledge is being created, shared and disseminated is thrilling and a great way of ensuring that you maintain a lifelonglearning approach to everything. My experience has taught me that to succeed in academia, you have to seek opportunities and really ‘own’ them like many other industries. Work with passion, believe in the education cause and, most importantly, be humble enough to believe that we are all still learning. Working together, we can make a better tomorrow for the next generations.

Luxury Meets Nature

Travelling is once again part of our lives, and OHLALA’s Layal El-Mahmoud embarked on a trip to paradise – aka Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences – to fully embrace a relaxing mode.

80

www.ohlala-magazine.com

TRAVEL Escapes once-in-a-lifetime trip began at the new state-of-the-art Bahrain International Airport. With an impressive space turned into a labyrinth of duty-free stores, dining choices and comfortable waiting areas, our trip began at the Gulf Air counter with a surprise upgrade to business class; a treat from the national carrier. With warm, welcoming smiles, Gulf Air staff swiftly finished our boarding process despite the many procedures related to Covid-19. After four and a half hours of deluxe flying, we landed at Velana International Airport in Malé to meet Adam. He’s a kind and helpful young Maldivian who assisted us with our transfer. A short drive later, we arrived at the seaplane lounge, and waited to board the tiny plane with a hot cup of jasmine tea in hand. A summer rain shower passed by and we boarded the seaplane, which is not ideal for claustrophobic travellers – but is incredibly safe and comfortable. Forty minutes of ocean views and we were landing in the middle of the water. A floating platform was our next step, moving from plane to boat. As we disembarked on the jetty at Amilla Maldives Resort & Residence on Baa Atoll, we finally breathed in the beautiful air and ambience. We were greeted by the sound of local drums mixed with the crashing of waves and the smiles of hospitable faces. With no check-in required, Elena, our amazing butler, escorted us to our new temporary home. A spacious, newlyrenovated and luxurious over-water villa adorned in white and blue decor. Two bicycles were parked by the door. Inside we cast our eyes over a giant counter that held everything you need, from a coffee machine to a minibar. As you walk through the living area, your eyes meet a blanket of blue, from your private infinity pool to the shallow sapphire water and the deeper azure ocean that looks as though it’s kissing the cloudy sky. There was an urge to jump right in, and everywhere we turned felt like a scene from a dream. Back inside, behind the bed, which was utterly comfortable, there was a big space with a dresser on one side and a wide floor-to-ceiling cabinet that can accommodate a whole family’s luggage. Two smooth white seats offered comfort while getting dressed. A bathtub sat at the far end, hidden away in the corner, with a rain shower ready to wash the sand away. A narrow path connected this side of the villa to the entrance. To the left side, a bathroom. To the right, another cabinet.

You’ll want to take it all in and store it in your memory. Once you’ve done that, it’s easier to relax. We took a seat at the desk and listened to Elena while she explained our well-planned itinerary. First things first, two gentlemen from the clinic arrived to perform Covid-19 tests via swabs. We stayed in our room for an hour until the results were confirmed negative (and we didn’t mind the down time). With a confirmed negative result, we rushed out to EBC (Emperor Beach Club) Restaurant. Here, the delicious Sri-Lankan Chilli Crab satisfied our palates in a way that we feel we’ll never experience again. The halloumi brown rice salad was light and delicious, making lunch a success. The dining options at Amilla are widely diverse with a deep understanding and commitment to the concepts of sustainability and self-sufficiency. Amilla plans for more vegetables to be grown on the island soil for maximum freshness. The garden currently produces basil and mint. Eggs also come from the resort’s chickens. All drinking water is purified in a special facility, and a special non-alcoholic Kombucha is prepared in the resort’s kitchen, using fruit leftovers and local herbs. The resort is also committed to the minimum use of plastic. Throughout our three-night stay, every meal was as satiating as its predecessor, if not better. For breakfast, a buffet offered a great range of bread and pastries, and yoghurt and jams that are prepared in house. There was fruit, porridge, cold cuts and cheese, and an extensive hot food offering (sausages and hash browns, pancakes, waffles and more). You can get made-to-order eggs and anything off

the à la carte menu. We ordered our favourite Maldivian tuna dish, Massuni, which is canned tuna prepared with freshly ground coconut, chilli, onion, and lime juice… so, so good! If you wish to try the Instagram-worthy floating breakfast in the privacy of your pool, all you need to do is book it the day before. The Japanese restaurant, WOK (taste of Asia), was exceptional. Amazing octopus salad, sushi, and catch of the day fish fillet all passed the taste bud test, coated in mouth-watering sweet peanut sauce. In the evening, you can chill out and enjoy a shisha if you wish, all surrounded by beach vibes with your toes in the sand. Rainy days put a halt to our water activity plans, but unwinding by the pool was just perfect. Youngsters also have plenty of activities to choose from at the kids’ club. We tried recycled paper making at the Art Studio, which was fun! Entertainment was alive in the evenings. The resort organises culture-inspired shows as often as possible, and we had the pleasure of watching the talented fire show on our third night. Javvu Spa offered us a long-anticipated treatment, a 60-minute aromatherapy body massage. From a variety of essential oils, we chose coconut; it smelled divine and was deeply moisturising! We felt completely Zen afterwards. Visiting the Maldives was a dream come true, and Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences certainly made it the picturesque and memorable escape that you imagine. As far as safety, seclusion, and luxury goes – this is the destination where you’ll find it all.

HOLDING OUT

FOR A HERO

After 18 months of closure, Primavera Osteria Contemporanea is back at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain and better than ever.

84

www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHIC Eats

T

he interiors have been given an upgrade. The open kitchen offers a great view of the chefs as they go about creating their fabulous dishes. There is a long table directly in front of the kitchen where special-event cooking demonstrations can be held as well as a private dining room. The interiors are warm and welcoming and, during the current cooler weather, there’s the option to eat on the terrace overlooking the pool and the pretty gardens. That’s what we did and I highly recommend it. It was a pleasure to meet the property’s new Executive Sous Chef, Heros de Agostinis from Rome, who is currently working to train Primavera’s staff on the new menu he has created. We were lucky enough to have him join us at our table to explain the dishes we were about to try and make his own personal recommendations. Since autumn is truffle season, and I am slightly obsessed with the flavoursome fungi, it would not have been good if I didn’t try some dishes from the truffle tasting menu. I started with Carpaccio di Manzo Croccante – crispy beef carpaccio with dry-aged parmesan, rocket leaves and Umbria black truffle. The thinly sliced, seasoned beef lies on a flat disc of crunchy baked parmesan. Add in a generous topping of shaved truffles and both myself and my dining companion were in taste-sensory heaven! She had grilled scallops with cucumber gazpacho which, in a pleasing show, was poured at the table. A dedicated foodie, she declared the scallops to be some of the best she’s ever tasted on the island. I tried a mouthful and was seriously impressed with both the texture – soft and yielding – and the flavour – delicate and sweet. For this dish, the gazpacho was the perfect accompaniment to avoid drowning out the seafood.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

85

CHIC Eats Next came Spaghetti di Gragnano Cacio e Pepe with raw Sicilian red prawns and Amalfi lemon. The prawns are served raw, about which I was slightly concerned, but Chef Heros explained the process by which they are harvested in southern Italian waters and immediately frozen on board the boats as they need to be eaten really fresh. The fishermen only sell the unfrozen ones to local restaurants as they can become tainted really quickly. Immediate freezing means the exquisite flavour is retained. They are juicy and slightly sweet, making a flavoursome addition to the cheesy, chunky pasta. My dining companion had Bottoni di Pappa al Pomodoro – tomato ravioli with baked herb ricotta. It sounds like such a simple dish but ended up being one of the standouts of the night. The warm tomato sauce with sprigs of Italian thyme perfectly complemented the al dente pasta packets of softly melting cheese – I think I ate almost as much of her dish as I did my own. We followed with pumpkin risotto and both opted for a generous topping of Alba truffles, grated at our table. As you would expect, this the perfect comfort food dish. The rich scent and taste of the cheese welcomed the pumpkin to form a perfect flavour combination and the topping of truffles, deep and slightly gamey in taste, along with a hint of star anise, presented the ideal foil adding a touch of flamboyance. Last up for the savouries was Filleto di Manzo Black Angus with aubergine parmigiana and basil oil for me. And lamb chops with stuffed baby artichokes alla Romana for my friend. Both were fabulous. The beef was perfectly cooked, lightly charred on the outside and temptingly yielding and deep red inside. The aubergine and parmesan combination added the exact level of carby comfort required but without being overblown. The lamb chops were expertly rendered. Pink on the inside, tender rather than chewy and with a delightful piquancy.

For dessert, I tried the Tiramisu which has a rich coffee taste and perfectly creamy texture. My dining companion went for the chef ’s special, the Heros’ Sunday Cake, which was the second outright triumph of the evening and comes with its own story of when his grandmother would collect him from school in his native Italy and would make something similar as a snack that clearly left a big impression. A combination of sweet flakey pastry with milk ice cream and chocolate sauce, this dish is a great indication of the childhood that inspired Chef Heros. It’s sweet but not overly so and the homemade ice cream is fabulously creamy. Granny sure knew what she was doing. At the end of the evening, we were convinced that everyone should try out the new menu at Primavera. Do it, it’s yummy!

KEEPING

FOCUSED This month, Victoria Kruse shares her tips on maintaining a new healthy diet and shares a Christmas treat recipe with us.

W

hen you are following a specific diet, it is easy to fall off the wagon during the festive season. However, you don’t have to. Victoria brings some tips to keep you motivated to follow your chosen eating style, even when it seems too hard. - When possible, make the change in your diet together with a significant other. It will be easier to keep the focus when the difficult times come. Having someone in the same condition as you will keep you on your toes. - Clear out your kitchen of anything you don’t want in your eating lifestyle and try to remove any temptations from cabinets and fridge. - Make sure you have the right food available. You might want to try a food box subscription service or visit a regular store that you know has the right food choices to satiate your appetite. - Try to take some time each week to prepare basic food, particularly go-to ready meals or snacks and keep them in your fridge or freezer. So, if you get snowed under or distracted, you can grab things that still fulfil your hunger. You can still enjoy the Christmas flavours if you follow a low carb diet. Learn with Victoria how to make an Italian staple in a revamped, lighter version during the holiday season.

Low Carb Panforte – Italian Christmas Cake Ingredients: 4 pasture-raised eggs 100g butter melted 60g coconut milk 45g coconut treacle (or coconut syrup) 220g ground almond 40g tapioca starch 50g cassava flour 30g erythritol 64g dried cranberry 40g golden raisins

40g dark chocolate 85% buttons or cut into pieces 20g activated almond 20g activated pistachio 20g activated pecan nuts 40g activated walnut ½ tsp salt ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground nutmeg zest of one orange

Method:

Step one – activate your nuts Nuts and seeds contain phytic acid, a substance that they produce to stop predators from eating them. However, when humans consume phytic acid, it inhibits our ability to absorb essential minerals such as magnesium, potassium and calcium. Activating also removes the bitter flavour that nuts can have. Place the nuts in a bowl, cover with water, and add one tsp of raw apple cider vinegar. Leave it for five to six hours and then drain and place them in the oven to dry for 12 hours at 60° Celsius then chop. Step two – make the Panforte Beat the eggs until they become fluffy; slowly add the melted butter, coconut milk and coconut treacle. Add the salt, cinnamon, ginger, ground nutmeg and orange zest. In a separate bowl, mix the ground almond, cassava flour, tapioca starch and erythritol. Combine the liquid ingredients to the dry mixture and add the dried cranberry, golden raisins, chopped chocolate and all chopped nuts. Pour the mix into a 20cm cake ring and bake in the oven for approximately 40 minutes at 165° Celsius. Enjoy! @victoria_maldiveswellness

THE ALL-NEW

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE L THE WORLD’S MOST CELEBRATED SUV DELIVERS A NEW LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE WITH ITS LATEST REVAMP. 94

www.ohlala-magazine.com

J

eep is celebrating 80 years of 4x4 leadership and innovation with the launch of their all-new Grand Cherokee L. This reimagining of the most awarded SUV of all time is sure to put a smile on the faces of SUV lovers and off-road enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the outstanding team at Behbehani Brothers, OHLALA Magazine received the opportunity to carefully inspect and test-drive this latest model, an experience we won’t soon forget. First up, the exterior. Jeep have taken inspiration from their first full-sized luxury SUV, the original Wagoneer. Despite the 3,091mm wheelbase of this vehicle, the L’s profile is slender in nature, emphasised by its elongated hood and cab. The forward tipping grille further highlights the length of the bonnet and is complemented by a full suite of LED lighting.

This lighting setup is fitted as standard on all trim levels and includes ultra slim headlamps, slim horizontal fog lamps with unique signature lighting, as well as ultra slim tail lamps. The roof has been both lowered and tapered to ensure maximum aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency, without sacrificing any important cargo space. Upon entering the vehicle, we were greeted by a next-generation interior, boasting opulent colours, handcrafted materials and modern amenities. We found all features in the cabin to be most impressive including the 16way adjustable seating with lumbar support as well as the multifunction steering wheel that feels just right in hand. All control features have been perfectly placed for optimum performance and convenience, whilst the design and quality of the dashboard is truly outstanding.

DIVA Drives The centre stack has been realigned to ensure accessibility for the driver, with an illuminated element framing the 10.1-inch display for the Unconnect 5 system. Additionally, a 10.25-inch frameless digital gauge cluster has also been included in the setup, allowing the user easy access to driver-assist technologies and other vehicle information. Despite this system including nearly two dozen different menus, we found it easy to navigate, intuitive and most informative. This system has a fully customisable home screen and is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Grand Cherokee L is the first three-row vehicle produced by Jeep. This spacious SUV is a genuine seven-seater, able to comfortably fit up to seven adults. The second-row door openings are larger than previous models, with the doors themselves able to open to 64-degrees. An ingress/ egress exterior side step has also been fitted for your convenience. The third row features a 50/50 split and can be folded via an electronic remote

release in the rear cargo area. The volume of the boot is 1,328 litres, which can be increased up to 2,396 litres with all seating folded flat. Although both the exterior and interior design of the L are impressive, its performance capabilities are what truly set this car apart from the rest of the pack. Upon first inspection one may think this SUV is a little on the large side, a factor that could affect performance. This, however, could not be further from the truth. This all-new model is equipped with the all-aluminium, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine. With 293 horsepower and 353Nm of torque, this engine produces more than enough power for all terrain, whilst continuously aiding fuel consumption. The powertrain combined with a class-exclusive Quadra-Lift Air Suspension, a highly effective braking system and advanced traction control, ensure this model is an absolute joy to drive and we always felt in complete control of the experience.

“This spacious SUV is a genuine seven-seater, able to comfortably fit up to seven adults.”

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Upon venturing off-road, we found the Grand Cherokee L’s class-leading Selec-Terrain traction management system to be extremely useful, allowing us to smoothly switch between five terrain modes including Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow and Mud/Sand. No matter the terrain, the L made short work of any and all geographical challenges we put in its way. Jeep have incorporated more than 110 safety and security features in the all-new L. These include innovative applications of technologies that refine the connection between the driver, the vehicle and the road. These features include Full-Speed Collision Warning, Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, Night Vision Camera, Rear Cross Path detection, Active Lane Management, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning, Advanced Brake Assist, Blind-spot Monitoring, ParkSense rear park assist sensors, Tyrepressure monitoring, a Drowsy Driver Detection system as well as Traffic Sign Recognition amongst many others. So, what else can we say? If you are looking to purchase a superior 4x4 seven-seater SUV that not only looks great and drives well, but keeps you and your loved ones safe, this is the car for you.

MISS Ohlala

Wind of CHANGE

New Year’s resolutions, here we go! Regardless of what you commit to, the idea is to make your life in the coming year a better one.

LAURA JAMES ON PEXELS

It’s time to say goodbye to 2021, a year that started full of hope and that we can say is ending on a better note than when it began. With Covid-19 vaccines out there, our fight against the latest pandemic is showing signs that we might be on the winning team. We still have a long way to go, but when we look back, we can say that we are on the right track. Every new year is packed with lots of hope and resolutions; it’s that period when we put our lives into perspective and decide that we need to make changes. According to the Discover Happy Habits website, the most popular resolutions for 2020 were to exercise more (50%), save money (49%) and eat healthier (43%). They later found that 35% kept all their resolutions, 49% continued with some of their promises, and only 16% failed at keeping any of them. After the scary year we had in 2020, people were more determined to modify or leave behind bad habits, mainly when it came to their health. Statistics specialist Statista showed that America’s top resolutions for 2021 were to exercise more (44%) and eat healthier (42%). Some of the other common resolutions are quitting smoking, spending more time with family and friends and living to the fullest. Whatever change you wish to make, now is the best moment. What about putting a list together of the things you’ve done this year that you are very proud of and also something that you can improve? Try to make it a positive one, with lots of minor or significant achievements – they are all relevant. And regarding the changes, make them about things you can see yourself doing, such as donating blood or starting recycling. Just don’t forget to be nice to yourself when it comes to expectations.
