JOHANNA ORTIZ

Editor’s Letter And in the blink of an eye, 2021 is ending faster than we could ever have imagined. A year when vaccines were the topic of every chat and billionaires decided to take over space. After a 2020 without much social interaction due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2021 saw us going back to face-to-face meetings. And this month, parties are filling our calendars, which means you will probably celebrate the holiday season with family and friends. To help you out with your Christmas shopping list, we put together a gift guide that lets you please all the different ladies in your life (pg46) – you’re welcome! Our Style Focus pages bring the best picks for the festive period and accessories to wear on the cooler days (pg12). We also love all that sparkles, coloured watches and Arabic-inspired jewellery are this month’s picks (pg42). And what is fashion’s BFF? Beauty! We are all about new make-up palettes and lipsticks (pg52). However, embarking on pampering and beautifying treatments are our favourite topics. Our contributor delves into a body and soul cleansing Hammam (pg62) and has her locks and nails treated at this hot beauty spot (pg66). We end our December issue dining at this new eatery that offers a journey into delectable flavours (pg76). Instead of our monthly test drive, we had the pleasure to shoot an entire lookbook with this revamped luxury and modern vehicle (pg32). We wish you a magical Christmas and a New Year filled with happy days!

History shows that handbags have been in use for more than 5,000 years, and there is no sign of them going anywhere. This season, there are bags for all tastes and needs (size-wise). However, we’ve noticed that they are more structured and tones of green, brown and the all-time favourite, black, are in the spotlight.

Film partnerships and solutions to make this world a nicer place are the focus of our roundup this month. Let's finish 2021 with good vibes.

Fashion for All

The fashion world is aware of its importance in backing new talents and Alexander McQueen has just announced its support to the A Team Arts Education in London's East End. The organisation assists young people that aspire to enter arts and design careers. "It feels especially important for us to be able to take part in supporting young people from the East End of London, where Lee Alexander McQueen grew up. At this house, we all know that talent comes from everywhere, irrespective of their background," says Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen's Creative Director. Over the coming year, the brand will support A Team Arts Education financially and further extend the workshops and classes with the young people and teachers it began as a pilot during 2020.

OHLALA ICYMI Bond, James Bond

For the first time, MICHAEL Michael Kors is partnering with the 007 film franchise. The collaboration brings a capsule of limited-edition, co-branded products and a 360° marketing campaign. The MMK x 007 line features an all-new black and gold signature logo print to showcase the glamour and adventures synonymous with the Bond enterprise and the Michael Kors brand. The collection brings 11 pieces, from handbags and luggage to swimwear and footwear. Starring Bella Hadid and model Cindy Bruna, the campaign video conjures an air of intrigue and Bond-themed irresistibility. Shot on location at The Ocean Club, Bahamas – the same destination seen in the 007 Casino Royale film – it shows Bella Hadid enjoying a luxury solo getaway. Of course, in the world of James Bond, nothing is ever as it seems.

Royal Status

The brand Mouawad has revealed its partnership as the exclusive jewellery sponsor of Spencer, a film about the life of Princess Diana. The movie stars Kristen Stewart in the role of Diana and takes place in a pivotal, life-changing weekend for the princess over the Christmas holidays in the early 1990s. The jewellery items include a 7.25-carat blue sapphire and 1.82-carat diamond engagement ring, reminiscent of Diana's iconic engagement ring. The Mouawad Co-Guardians, Fred, Alain and Pascal Mouawad, commented: "Mouawad has an illustrious heritage in jewellery and watchmaking. And it has been a pleasure to work on Spencer, providing the jewellery for the role of an iconic princess known for her style and powerful impact on the world."

Comprised of Tyler's unique silhouettes and designs, the capsule expands the brand’s core values while being inspired by numerous vegan clients and renewable sources demands. This one-of-a-kind collection is not only environmentally friendly but also sustainable.

Holiday Vibes

It's that period of the year when families and friends get together to create memorable moments. Boucheron brings its stunning collections to the centre of this celebration. he fashion scene in Doha is embracing history with Qatar Museums’ exhibition at M7 in Msheireb Downtown Doha. The retrospective features a selection of pieces shown for the first time, including ensembles from the private collection of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, a long-standing client of Christian Dior Couture. An enchanting encounter between stunning evening gowns and a series of haute couture costumes. The exhibit, on view until March 31, 2022, is the first of this scale in the Middle East and has been reinvented for the region following successful presentations at prestigious museums in Paris, London, Shanghai and New York. The showcase, specially conceived for Qatar and curated by Olivier Gabet, Director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, celebrates nearly 75 years of creative passion punctuated by captivating haute couture dresses and works. The majestic entrance welcomes visitors evoking the legendary Christian Dior 30 Avenue Montaigne studio. Inside, the public finds a selection of silhouettes designed by Christian Dior’s successors – Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri. Reflecting Christian Dior’s fascination with art, more than 50 Lady Dior handbags have been reinterpreted for the Dior Lady Art project, granting painters, sculptors, and designers carte blanche to transform this emblem according to their artistic vision. Other creative expressions are also on display, celebrating this iconic fashion house. “Christian Dior was a true visionary, so it is significant to us that Designer of Dreams is the first major exhibition to open at Qatar Museums’ M7, a creative hub that supports Qatar’s burgeoning fashion and design industries. This inspiring space provides a platform for local talent and supports aspiring and established innovative entrepreneurs in Qatar,” said Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson, Qatar Museums. #diordesignerofdreams

Stimulate All

Your Senses The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is more than a car. It is a design masterpiece with ultimate technology for a memorable driving experience. The new year is just around the corner, and what could be better than to start it with a brand-new vehicle in your life? The new S-Class from Mercedes-Benz brings legendary designs and traditional engineering expertise, which defines the luxury segment in the automobile industry. Modern sophistication attains the next level in the interior of the S-Class. The designers have created a feel-good ambience with a lounge character marked by elegance, high quality and lightness. The dashboard with its new architecture, stylish surface design and ergonomic display arrangement is a highlight. The desired harmony between luxurious digital and analogue systems results in a revolutionary interior design, including associations with architecture and yacht design elements. The sculptured look of the dashboard, centre console and armrests appears to float above an expansive interior landscape. But the feel-good aspect goes even deeper, with high ride quality and low noise levels as well as an extensive range of the Energising Comfort programmes, the S-Class looks after the well-being of its passengers. The seats literally invite the occupants to sit down and relax. Up to 19 vibration motors bring 10 different massage options from the front cushions that follow the hot-stone principle for a relaxing moment. Yet comfort is not enough: the seats also play a significant part where safety is concerned, and they all carry the seal of approval from the Healthy Seating campaign. However, no other innovation in recent years has radically changed the operation of a Mercedes-Benz like the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The second generation of this learn-capable system now debuts in the new S-Class. The vehicle interior is even more digital and intelligent, as both the hardware and software have made great strides. Using cameras in the overhead control panel and learning algorithms, MBUX Interior Assist recognises and anticipates the wishes and intentions of the occupants. It interprets head direction, hand movements and body language and responds with corresponding vehicle functions. As well as enhancing operating convenience, MBUX Interior Assist improves safety. The new S-Class is a vehicle that goes beyond just taking you from A to B – it makes it all about the journey! A luxurious ride to your favourite spots in Qatar.

Elegant Timepieces New colours and gemstone combinations are joining Audemars Piguet's iconic Royal Oak Selfwinding family. 42

www.ohlalamag.net

T

he Swiss watch manufacturer is expanding its 15452 series with two new Royal Oak Selfwinding models in 37mm. The iterations are crafted in white or pink gold and meticulously set with diamonds and colourful gemstones, while the guilloche dial incorporates new grey or beige hues. Two new matching, satin-finished, calfskin leather straps give the final touch to the watches' original aesthetic – beige for the pink gold version and light grey for the white gold. The gold bezel is adorned with 40 brilliant-cut gemstones for a smooth and harmonious gradation. The stones have been individually cut and polished to present clear and sharp angles before being set by hand on the bezel. They reflect light to create unique optical effects, ranging from red and orange tints to pink hues, depending on the model.

The case of the 18-carat pink gold model is paved with 124 brilliant-cut diamonds down to the bracelet connecting studs. The new beige hue of the Grande Tapisserie dial echoes the pink gold case for contemporary flair. The two pink gold applied hour markers at 12 o'clock are also set with brilliant-cut diamonds. For its part, the pink gold bezel is embellished with 40 yellow sapphires, red garnets and orange spessartite garnets. This vivid gradation – a first for Royal Oak – adds a warm and bright touch. The 18-carat white gold case and connecting studs of the second reference are also set with 124 brilliant-cut diamonds. The rhodium-toned dial is enhanced by a Grande Tapisserie pattern and applied 18-carat white gold hour markers and hands. The white gold bezel is set with 40 brilliant-cut pink sapphires and rubies, offering a refined and subtle gradation to contrast with the watch's monochromatic aesthetic.

Dancing Letters Inspired by Arab culture, Chopard is adding delicate necklaces to its Happy Diamonds collection.

44

www.ohlalamag.net

C

hopard’s iconic Happy Diamonds collection is expanding; a new series of rose gold pendants combining dancing diamonds with 11 letters of the Arabic alphabet is now part of the dangling diamond family. The Happy Diamonds – Happy Me capsule is a tribute to one of the richest written languages in the world. Arab culture has influenced Chopard to present

its Happy Diamonds pendant in an exclusive line honouring the Arabic writing system. Letters symbolise interpersonal communication and the development of modern civilisations. With this capsule, Chopard recalls its bond to this ancient culture, synonymous with knowledge, enlightenment and openness to the world. The designs bring a pendant in ethical 18-carat rose gold graced with a perfectly round shape symbolising wisdom, also made of ethical

18-carat rose gold and topped with a diamond. At the heart of the circle, two sapphire crystals set the stage for the three dancing diamonds, and a letter-charm in ethical 18-carat rose gold completes the jewellery pieces. The symbols correspond to the first letters of the most popular Arabic female names: Alif, Shīn, Sīn, Dāl, Khā, Fā, Hā, Nūn, Mīm, Lâm and Yā’. Together they twirl in a dance of joy, imparting a resolutely feminine style.

Look into My Eyes

Fans of the House of Gucci can now celebrate the brand's first eyeshadow palette – the Palette Beauté Des Yeux Floral.

D

esigned for year-round wear, the Palette Beauté Des Yeux Floral brings 12 satin, matte and metallic shades to create endless looks for your eyes. Each hue symbolises love, sympathy, joy and happiness to reflect the feelings flowers bring into our lives. The highly pigmented palette is easy to apply and blend. The eyeshadows are soft to the touch and include three different textures. The three metallic shades are silk-soft and offer a fabric-like, chrome finish that brightens the appearance of the eyes and creates a radiant effect. When applied to the eyelids, the two satin shades transform into an ultra-thin, coloured film and deliver a sophisticated silky result with a velvety finish. The seven matte shades glide on smoothly for a flawless and densely pigmented finish.

54

www.ohlalamag.net

The case is designed with a gold trim featuring a vintage-inspired floral pattern on a black background, reflecting the palette's name. Encased in square pockets, all shades and their names are inspired by flowers, from a matte light blue aster to a metallic purple iris. As different flowers bloom in different seasons, the palette reflects their colours, from autumnal reds and rich browns to the bright and bold shades that signal the beginning of spring. The palette's removable tray means that the case can be transformed into a standout piece, such as a jewellery box, once the eyeshadows are finished. Or you can replace them with a refill tray that will be launched soon. @guccibeauty

Gold Touch

Guerlain’s make-up collection is covered in golden sparkles to light up the year-end festivities.

T

o celebrate the festive season, Guerlain’s new beauty tools appear to be pollinated with gold in brand-new joyful shades to enhance eyes, complexions and smiles. The Mad Eyes Shadow Duo stick reveals two new iridescent and sophisticated eyeshadow palettes: a plum and gold pairing to give the eyes a subtle touch of warmth; and a luminous icy grey and silver duo for a dazzling look. The Mad Eyes Brow Framer is an eyebrow gel pen that adorns brows in a tinted shade suitable for all skin tones. It has been infused with fine golden pearls to open the eyes and offer brows a bright finish. Conveying all the magic of Christmas, Guerlain’s iconic Météorites brings giant pink and golden holographic pearls to transform your complexion with exceptional radiance. The legendary terracotta powder commemorates its bestselling 03 shade in a new glimmering festive design. As if sculped with gold sequins, the skin is boosted with a sunny glow even during winter.

Painting the lips, the two new shades, Gold Red and Gold Brick add a golden twist to the brand’s Rouge G famous reds. Delicately infused into the lipstick, gold pigments add vibrancy to the line’s intense and brick red. Once applied to the lips, the marbled lipstick bullet adds subtle sparkle to the smile. The cases are adorned in a decorative sequined trim with two exclusive sets – golden and red and silver and gold duets. However, the jewel of the 2021 festive collection is a limited edition of the Rouge G lipstick. The case has been crafted by the Atelier Baqué Molinié and brings a bee woven entirely from gold thread, embroidered with glittering beads and sewn onto a delicate, padded velvet fishnet backdrop. This bespoke creation pays homage to the emblem of the house and the virtuosic talent of all those who have been crafting luxury at Guerlain ever since its creation. A jewellery masterpiece, the case is presented in a prestige gift set, accompanied by the bestselling n°214 shade – a flamboyant, satiny red.

Kiss Kiss Lancôme’s L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink dresses lips in an ultra-pigmented and ultra-thin film with a low-transfer finish that seals in colour with a single stroke.

L

ancôme has reinvented its matte lipstick with a new formula, new pack, and new shades – welcome the L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink. Promising a unique matte experience with a long-lasting, second skin, semi-matte that instantly becomes one with your lips, L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink represents the next saga in the brand’s mission to recreate matte. The innovative lip ink comes in 17 new and existing shades, from intense reds to subtle nudes. It is made with water-in-oil emulsion, a four-times thinner film than a traditional lipstick with a two times more pigmented effect. In defiance of matte convention, the ultrathin texture gives you a bare lip feeling for all-day comfortable wear. The inks create a dramatic impact without the usually uncomfortable feeling that these products tend to leave on the lips. The line brings highly pigmented colours with a weightless sensation and a foolproof application in one stroke. The new formulation meets luxury packaging. A distinctive feminine frosted bottle with a black satin top is set on a golden pedestal portraying its membership of the L’Absolu Rouge family. Accompanying the design, a petal applicator delivers the right dose of product for perfectly defined lips. To complete the revamped pack, the Lancôme rose emblazons the cap in a new, curved motif.

T

his common and resilient flower can be spotted in many gardens, even in the Middle East. Its bright yellow/orange colour signifies the sun's energy, a source of vitality. Also known as calendula, marigold has been used in natural medicine for centuries. It is considered beneficial in reducing inflammation and promoting healing. Marigold has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, can act as an antiseptic agent and works as an excellent astringent. It also controls face oil production by balancing the sebaceous glands and has glycoprotein and nucleoprotein that helps skin cell generation. The other ingredients in this mask are yoghurt, which contains lactic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acid that removes dead skin cells. A dose of rose water to maintain the skin's pH balance and control excess oil. And finally, lemon, which is rich in vitamins C and B, phosphorus and carbohydrates to fight free radicals.

OHLALA’s Marigold Face Mask for Oily Skin What you'll need:

1 tbsp marigold flower paste 1 tsp natural yoghurt 1 tsp rose water ½ tsp lemon juice

How to make and apply it:

1. Make the marigold paste. Get three florets, open them, and remove the petals. You will find some black parts, discard them and keep only the orange portions of the petals. Wash and put them in a blender with two tbsp of water to help with the consistency. Blend them well into a smooth paste. 2. Mix the paste with yoghurt, rose water and lemon juice. 3. Wash your face and apply the mask. Let it dry and leave it for 15 minutes. 4. Wash it off with lukewarm water and continue with your beauty routine. 5. Use it fresh and apply this paste twice a week for best results.

Fit for

This month, OHLALA’s Homara Choudhary embarks on a soul and skin, deep cleansing journey. 62

SPA Spotlight

I

t’s easy to see why global superstars like Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry stay at the Mondrian Doha. It’s one of Doha’s most stylish hotels, brimming with opulence. The 270-room, luxury property was created in collaboration with the globally renowned Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. Mondrian Doha is more than just a hotel; it is a journey through a wonderland of fairy tale designs. It’s one of the country’s most prestigious properties recognised for its structural and sophisticated artistic beauty. The lavish venue boasts larger-than-life decorative pieces throughout all 24-floors and is home to the world’s largest ESPA, the first of its kind in the Middle East. The decadent wellness centre spans an entire floor. There are 11 palatial treatment rooms, the only traditional Turkish Hammam in Doha – a spa within the spa – as well as specialised areas for private gatherings. It even has its own VIP suite, where you

can immerse yourself in an oasis of indulgence with bespoke head-to-toe face and body treatments. There are no less than six signature experiences and separate areas for men and women. I was in Doha’s hidden paradise. On arrival I was met by my lovely therapist Sandra who offered me a Karkade tea (without sugar) and a hot towel for my hands as I filled out a consent form. I was then escorted to the beautiful, spacious changing room and given a private locker which contained a white fluffy towelling robe, slippers and a bottle of water. I had literally walked into heaven. The garden-inspired, women-only spa features sumptuous open white spaces and five treatment rooms as well as a multi-level heat experience garden filled with design features such as the ‘Tree of Life’ sculpture and Swarovski crystal rain showers. There was even an intricately carved, full-sized Finnish sauna made with Scandinavian wood.

The Ultimate Hammam is ESPA’s most popular treatment. It’s a two-hour experience to ‘cleanse, smooth, hydrate and nourish the skin and banish muscular stress and tension’. It was exactly what I needed. My entire body was one gigantic knot and it needed unravelling. You can choose between the Turkish or Moroccan Hammam experience. I went for the latter as it involved a hydrating marine mud mask and my skin was in desperate need of moisture. The Hammam is justifiably the main centrepiece of the spa with intricate tile work and two treatment areas under a shimmering Swarovski crystal canopy. I was mesmerised by the glittering mosaic walls and floor tiles, an extravagant feast for the senses. Unlike most Hammams, it wasn’t too hot or steamy. The tiles were

64

www.ohlalamag.net

warm and my skin felt instantly soothed as I made my way into the steam room to have the black soap applied. As I inhaled the argan oil and I soaked in the steam, my shoulders gently relaxed as Sandra carefully lathered my skin. The combination of the heat and steam instantly eased my aching muscles and within 10 minutes my entire body was ready to be buffed. My skin was exfoliated with Kesa – a Moroccan bath loofah. Sandra didn’t hold back. She took her time scrubbing the dead skin cells away until my body was glistening. After rinsing my skin with luscious, warm water, Sandra worked her magic on my tresses. My long hair was shampooed and conditioned using organic ESPA products. As she rinsed my hair, I felt renewed and rejuvenated with each drop of water.

My soul felt as if it had been on a spiritual journey as my tiredness was washed away. Lastly, I was enveloped in a marine mud mask. Once fully applied, I was taken back to the steam room where I relaxed as the mask nourished my squeaky-clean skin. After five minutes I showered off and was taken to one of the candescent treatment rooms for my next experience. All massages start with a relaxing foot bath. Sandra conducted a sensory test to determine what kind of aromatherapy oil my body required. She decided to combine two types; the ESPA ‘Fitness’ body oil with restorative Indian Bay and clove bud to soothe and relax. And the signature ‘Soothing’ oil with warm peaceful aromatic myrrh’s notes plus frankincense and rose geranium to ease the mind and de-stress the body. It worked. After checking the type of pressure I was comfortable with, Sandra managed to massage out the remaining knots in my

neck and shoulders. She paid particular attention to addressing the tension along my back. I immediately felt tranquil and restored. In fact, I felt brand new. PS.: It’s worth noting that currently the award-winning spa is offering a 45-minute ‘Ladies Social Hammam’ where you can go with up to four friends and have a Turkish or Moroccan Hammam. There’s also a special pool day on Wednesdays from 9am to 3pm.

Quality, Experience and Community Values OHLALA’s Homara Choudhury discovered that the hype around roots hair and beauty is well justified. 66

BEAUTY Spotlight

T

o say I was excited about visiting roots hair and beauty would be an understatement. I had read and heard glowing reviews and was looking forward to finally being pampered after a gruelling week at work. Roots was founded by Debbie Algosaibi after she struggled to find a salon that met all her hair and beauty needs. Originally from the UK, she’s lived in Doha for 20 years and opened her first salon in 2015. Her sister Carolyn manages both branches and it’s been a resounding success. You can see why. It’s more than just a salon. These sisters mean business. I was given a warm welcome from the moment I walked in. After having my temperature and Ehteraz checked, I filled out a consent form and was introduced to my therapist Lyn, who offered me a refreshing beverage. I’d been to a function and my feet were still throbbing from an evening in my Louboutin’s. Lyn is a qualified reflexologist with 20 years’ experience. After stimulating my tired tootsies in warm water, she rubbed them with some oil. There are more than 7,000 nerve endings in each foot. Lyn reached all 14,000 of them and discovered a few more. The benefits of reflexology are enormous. As well as cleansing the body of toxins, it boosts the immune system, increases blood circulation and promotes healing. After an hour of massaging all of my pressure points, I literally felt like I was floating on clouds.

BEAUTY Spotlight I glided into another room for my non-surgical facelift with Nikkie. Now that I could feel my feet, I was ready for my face to be brought back to life. There are few salons in Doha that offer the luxury Caci microdermabrasion treatment. It’s a combined facial using electrical micro-currents, incorporating blue- and red-light therapy. In short, it works in harmony with the body to help improve skin tone, texture and face shape. I knew some big names had used the treatment and I was beyond excited to try it. After cleansing my face, Nikkie began working her magic with the microdermabrasion. My face felt as though it was being tickled as she buffed the dead skin cells away. The treatment is customised to suit your skin type. Despite having sensitive skin, I didn’t feel a thing. After the treatment, a cooling face mask was applied and I was glowing. My face looked rejuvenated, supple and clear. The ultimate anti-ageing facial without surgery! I was ready to sign up for a full course. My mane was next and I didn’t want anything too radical. My lovely colourist, Emily, took her time explaining what options I had. After going through the colour chart, I decided on a slight touch-up to my roots. Emily took her time sectioning my hair and gently applied the colour. After washing it out, I was then put in the experienced hands of new Assistant Manager Cat, who arrived from the UK’s Toni & Guy. As I am growing my hair, I didn’t want too much off, so she trimmed the ends and twisted my curls before drying them with a diffuser. I was left with soft, shiny bouncy curls. My hair has never looked or felt healthier. Carolyn came over to see how I and the ‘girls’ were doing. As well of taking care of the team and her clients, Carolyn told me about the company’s ‘giving back’ initiatives. The salon is heavily involved in charity work and has recently been providing hair services to the Afghan refugees who arrived in Doha. It has also been collecting toys and clothes for them. It was easy to see why roots hair and beauty is so popular. It’s more than a hair and beauty salon. It takes genuine pride in making people feel and look good while giving back to the community. Now that is something I wanted to be part of. I couldn’t wait to book my next appointment.

Luxury Meets Nature

Travelling is once again part of our lives, and OHLALA’s Layal El-Mahmoud embarked on a trip to paradise – aka Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences – to fully embrace a relaxing mode.

72

www.ohlalamag.net

TRAVEL Escapes

fter four and a half hours of deluxe flying, we landed at Velana International Airport in Malé to meet Adam. He’s a kind and helpful young Maldivian who assisted us with our transfer. A short drive later, we arrived at the seaplane lounge, and waited to board the tiny plane with a hot cup of jasmine tea in hand. A summer rain shower passed by and we boarded the seaplane, which is not ideal for claustrophobic travellers – but is incredibly safe and comfortable. Forty minutes of ocean views and we were landing in the middle of the water. A floating platform was our next step, moving from plane to boat. As we disembarked on the jetty at Amilla Maldives Resort & Residence on Baa Atoll, we finally breathed in the beautiful air and ambience. We were greeted by the sound of local drums mixed with the crashing of waves and the smiles of hospitable faces. With no check-in required, Elena, our amazing butler, escorted us to our new temporary home. A spacious, newlyrenovated and luxurious over-water villa adorned in white and blue decor. Two bicycles were parked by the door. Inside we cast our eyes over a giant counter that held everything you need, from a coffee machine to a minibar. As you walk through the living area, your eyes meet a blanket of blue, from your private infinity pool to the shallow sapphire water and the deeper azure ocean that looks as though it’s kissing the cloudy sky. There was an urge to jump right in, and everywhere we turned felt like a scene from a dream. Back inside, behind the bed, which was utterly comfortable, there was a big space with a dresser on one side and a wide floor-to-ceiling cabinet that can accommodate a whole family’s luggage. Two smooth white seats offered comfort while getting dressed. A bathtub sat at the far end, hidden away in the corner, with a rain shower ready to wash the sand away. A narrow path connected this side of the villa to the entrance. To the left side, a bathroom. To the right, another cabinet.

You’ll want to take it all in and store it in your memory. Once you’ve done that, it’s easier to relax. We took a seat at the desk and listened to Elena while she explained our well-planned itinerary. First things first, two gentlemen from the clinic arrived to perform Covid-19 tests via swabs. We stayed in our room for an hour until the results were confirmed negative (and we didn’t mind the down time). With a confirmed negative result, we rushed out to EBC (Emperor Beach Club) Restaurant. Here, the delicious Sri-Lankan Chilli Crab satisfied our palates in a way that we feel we’ll never experience again. The halloumi brown rice salad was light and delicious, making lunch a success. The dining options at Amilla are widely diverse with a deep understanding and commitment to the concepts of sustainability and self-sufficiency. Amilla plans for more vegetables to be grown on the island soil for maximum freshness. The garden currently produces basil and mint. Eggs also come from the resort’s chickens. All drinking water is purified in a special facility, and a special non-alcoholic Kombucha is prepared in the resort’s kitchen, using fruit leftovers and local herbs. The resort is also committed to the minimum use of plastic. Throughout our three-night stay, every meal was as satiating as its predecessor, if not better. For breakfast, a buffet offered a great range of bread and pastries, and yoghurt and jams that are prepared in house. There was fruit, porridge, cold cuts and cheese, and an extensive hot food offering (sausages and hash browns, pancakes, waffles and more). You can get made-to-order eggs and anything off

the à la carte menu. We ordered our favourite Maldivian tuna dish, Massuni, which is canned tuna prepared with freshly ground coconut, chilli, onion, and lime juice… so, so good! If you wish to try the Instagram-worthy floating breakfast in the privacy of your pool, all you need to do is book it the day before. The Japanese restaurant, WOK (taste of Asia), was exceptional. Amazing octopus salad, sushi, and catch of the day fish fillet all passed the taste bud test, coated in mouth-watering sweet peanut sauce. In the evening, you can chill out and enjoy a shisha if you wish, all surrounded by beach vibes with your toes in the sand. Rainy days put a halt to our water activity plans, but unwinding by the pool was just perfect. Youngsters also have plenty of activities to choose from at the kids’ club. We tried recycled paper making at the Art Studio, which was fun! Entertainment was alive in the evenings. The resort organises culture-inspired shows as often as possible, and we had the pleasure of watching the talented fire show on our third night. Javvu Spa offered us a long-anticipated treatment, a 60-minute aromatherapy body massage. From a variety of essential oils, we chose coconut; it smelled divine and was deeply moisturising! We felt completely Zen afterwards. Visiting the Maldives was a dream come true, and Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences certainly made it the picturesque and memorable escape that you imagine. As far as safety, seclusion, and luxury goes – this is the destination where you’ll find it all.

A PARISIAN GEM

BLOOMS AT THE PEARL-QATAR Slipping down a unique Silk Road fusion journey with OHLALA’s Lindsey Steenkamp.

CHIC Eats

T

hree months ago, the Paris-based restaurant Shirvan Métisse opened its third outlet worldwide, right on our doorstep at The Pearl-Qatar. Slipping down this unique Silk Road fusion journey with an exploration of the lavish interpretations of Michelin-starred chef Akrame Benallal, whose inspiration, as the name suggests, came from the ancient Azerbaijan province of Shirvan. The journey begins as I enter the restaurant and feel enticed by the sonic ambience created by the international upbeat lounge music. I’m captivated by the ghostlike ceiling pendants dangling from ornately laser-cut wooden ceilings nestled atop interior treetops acting as pillars. As I sit down and start to notice the elegant details of the cutlery displayed in front of me, a passionate hostess welcomes me and immediately divulges her ambitious mocktail offerings. I’m leaning towards something fresh to clean my palate as I anticipate my food to follow. The Spices Garden mocktail is my first choice as it hosts passion fruit puree, rose water, fresh mint, honey and an infusion of my favourite spice, saffron. Gregoire, the head of operations and our main host, immediately sets the tone for the overall experience as he delivers a surprise side dish called Et Qutab, an Azeri grilled bread stuffed with lamb, onion and sumac topped with pomegranate sauce. The salty lamb combined with the sweet and sour sensation is delicious and pleasantly intriguing. My usual go-to starter is always tuna tartare and I easily jump on an oyster carousel when I get the chance. A unique Black Hummus with activated charcoal catches my eye and I decide to pair it with cheese naan bread. Yes, they serve naan bread and I have already set my eyes on the truffle naan for my next visit. I’m impressed with the rich and smoky flavour of the hummus.

www.ohlalamag.net

CHIC Eats

The Red Tuna Tartare arrives in an ornately patterned glass plate not only a feast for the eyes, but the taste buds as well. A rich and creamy texture broken by the fresh and flavourful tuna, topped with a crunch of winter asparagus. The two elegantly garnished Oysters Chermoulah arrive on a bed of ice. They are carefully created with a slash of Moroccan chermoula sauce, salmon eggs marinated with white balsamic vinegar and lemon. They are decorated like tiny pieces of art with edible flowers, and I fall in love with the interesting array of flavours that erupts with every bite. The performance turns progressively more luscious as the night wears on with the main course. With every corner of the Silk Road covered on the menu, my heart is set on trying the Morrocan-inspired Lobster Pastilla. Creamy lobster pieces are served on a bed of rice noodles and topped with crunchy, golden phyllo pastry. Upon serving, a decadent sauce is poured over the ingredients and the hostess crunches the Pastilla (phyllo pastry) with a spoon and fork, mixing the ingredients in the dish served at the table. The perfectly seasoned creation delights every sense with rich and smooth flavours and is complemented with a crunchy texture. For a red meat option on the table, I opted for the lamb chops marinated with homemade harissa sauce, served with a pistachio and yoghurt sauce and a mixed herb and yoghurt sauce. The lamb is as soft as butter and packed with wondrous aromas.

78

www.ohlalamag.net

The sweet finale before the curtain drops on a delightful night, is the classic, homemade Pistachio Ice Cream, topped with a texture of salted caramel and chopped pistachio. The ice cream is smooth, dreamy and not overly sweet. Alongside this, is a more dashing, chocolate flirtation called, Chocolate Delicacy. An over-the-top chocolate experience in the shape of chocolate squares towered over chocolate mousse. A taste and texture sensation that I have never experienced before. I would recommend sharing a few of the dishes as they are rich and come in generous servings; this way you can try more than one of the magical ensembles. I will most definitely return with guests that I would like to impress. The overall attention to detail on every touchpoint at Shirvan Métisse Doha is meticulous, with exceptional experiences and superior customer service. Their elegant interpretation of the Silk Road journey with a lively atmosphere is guaranteed to make your heart and your taste buds skip a few beats.

Wind of CHANGE

New Year’s resolutions, here we go! Regardless of what you commit to, the idea is to make your life in the coming year a better one.

LAURA JAMES ON PEXELS

It’s time to say goodbye to 2021, a year that started full of hope and that we can say is ending on a better note than when it began. With Covid-19 vaccines out there, our fight against the latest pandemic is showing signs that we might be on the winning team. We still have a long way to go, but when we look back, we can say that we are on the right track. Every new year is packed with lots of hope and resolutions; it’s that period when we put our lives into perspective and decide that we need to make changes. According to the Discover Happy Habits website, the most popular resolutions for 2020 were to exercise more (50%), save money (49%) and eat healthier (43%). They later found that 35% kept all their resolutions, 49% continued with some of their promises, and only 16% failed at keeping any of them. After the scary year we had in 2020, people were more determined to modify or leave behind bad habits, mainly when it came to their health. Statistics specialist Statista showed that America’s top resolutions for 2021 were to exercise more (44%) and eat healthier (42%). Some of the other common resolutions are quitting smoking, spending more time with family and friends and living to the fullest. Whatever change you wish to make, now is the best moment. What about putting a list together of the things you’ve done this year that you are very proud of and also something that you can improve? Try to make it a positive one, with lots of minor or significant achievements – they are all relevant. And regarding the changes, make them about things you can see yourself doing, such as donating blood or starting recycling. Just don’t forget to be nice to yourself when it comes to expectations.
