WHAT TO WEAR

WITH: LEGGINGS 5

2

1. Blazers are a way of adding a business vibe to your casual bottoms. If teamed up with striking pumps, the look can go from office to a fancy dinner. Celine has a beautiful blazer collection this season.

6

2. Long shirts, T-shirts and mini dresses are great picks for a casual look. You can finalise the outfit with trendy white trainers and a denim jacket. Opt for this Kenzo olive green mini dress. 3. Combat boots are best paired with tight trousers, so they are a stylish footwear pick to go with your leggings. These are from DSquared2. 4. Puffer jackets are comfy and warm and, when the cool breeze hits, they're all you want to wear. Bringing volume on top when wearing tight trousers is a fashion trick to balance your look. This unisex warmer is from Karl Lagerfeld. 5. Classic and elegant, the trench coat adds some pizzazz to your relaxed style. Complement the look with some high-heeled boots and conquer the world. This iconic item is from Burberry at Farfetch. 6. Wear your leggings with a biker jacket for a bold and rebel-without-a-cause approach. Are you looking for a feminine evening look? Pair with high heels. But if you want a laid-back style, opt for eye-catching trainers. We got inspired by Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley’s timeless style. 26

A new book, brand partnerships and eco-friendly products are in our selection this month.

Founded by Wimbledon champion Fred Perry in 1952, the brand named after the athlete collaborates with the Amy Winehouse Foundation for a unique collection. Rooted in the singer's sportswear and pin-up silhouettes, the collection sees influences from the modernday Fred Perry girl combined with Amy's distinctive style. The singer loved to dress up and this line celebrates the playful side of her style references, drawing specifically on the '60s soul music scene. The capsule is built on a monochrome palette with a checkerboard print used both as subtle detailing and more boldly across sweaters and outerwear. Each piece is signed off with two hearts — a reference to Amy's distinct tattoos. Fred Perry supports the Amy Winehouse Foundation, making contributions to the charity.

ICYMI Precious Gems

The film industry has been reproducing the stories of fashion icons, and luxury jewellery houses have been partnering with them, borrowing eye-catching pieces to portray the characters. Boucheron is featured in the latest release House of Gucci, an adaptation of Sara Gay Forden's The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed (2000). A biopic of the Gucci family dynasty over three decades which looks back at how Maurizio Gucci, the founder's grandson, and Patrizia Reggiani met and how their lives unfolded. In this scenario, Boucheron creations are featured in several scenes. Some of the jewellery pieces include the 31-motif; diamond-paved Serpent Bohème necklace in yellow gold; the diamond-paved Pompon necklace in pink gold; the diamond-paved Pompon Serpent Bohème bracelet in yellow gold; and the Cypris bracelet.

Mercedes-Benz and the New York-based fashion label Proenza Schouler partnered to create a collection that brings a new experience in luxury fashion and responsible design. Taking inspiration from travelling and the open road, this limited-edition capsule includes seven gender-neutral styles. Each piece is a study in colour and craftsmanship that reflects the passion of both brands for exquisite materials and outstanding design. Recycled cashmere blankets offered alongside naturally tanned blanket harnesses, showcase Proenza Schouler's take on the iconic Mercedes-Benz star. The knit turtleneck is made from luxurious recycled cashmere and the eco-cotton tie-dye T-shirt is produced using organic and eco-friendly dye methods. The campaign features the actress Laura Dern and her son Ellery Harper. A road trip of a mother and son in an all-electric EQS along the coast builds the dreamy scenery for Mercedes-Benz and Proenza Schouler's capsule collection.

Mulberrry has launched a collection of bags using the world's lowest carbon leather and crafted in the brand's carbon-neutral Somerset factories. The limited-edition capsule is produced in partnership with Muirhead, a member of the Scottish Leather Group. In line with Mulberry's Made to Last Manifesto, announced in 2021, the collection is created in the UK with a pioneering hyper-local, hyper-transparent, farm-to-finished product supply chain model, marking a bold commitment to transparency and traceability. Muirhead produces the world’s lowest carbon intensity leather. This achievement is possible by building close relationships with local farmers, utilising their pioneering thermal energy plant, which generates heat from waste, and maximising green water usage by filtering and recycling 40% of the wastewater back into leather production. This partnership with Muirhead represents the future of Mulberry.

A Designer's Memoir

OSMAN YOUSEFZADA

OSMAN AW2021

Since launching his eponymous label in 2008, Osman Yousefzada has created luxury womenswear with a unique approach. This month, the designer is releasing his first book, The Go-Between: A Portrait of Growing Up Between Different Worlds, offering a window inside the Pakistani/Afghan Pashtun community living in the west. British-born artist and renowned fashion designer Osman tells us about his own family living in a red-light district on the wrong side of the tracks. The stories he writes about, some fantastical, entertaining and funny, others moving and harrowing, take us from Birmingham to the banks of the River Kabul and the River Indus, and, eventually, to the London of Osman's teenage years. As the designer weaves in and out of these worlds, struggling with the burdens of racism and family expectations, he is forced to realise it is no longer possible to exist in the spaces 'in between'.

High Living at ITS BEST

One of the world's most well-known luxury department stores is coming to Doha and OHLALA had the pleasure to sit with Rosette Fares, Marketing and Communications Director of Printemps Doha, to talk about this impressive new arrival. 34

OHLALA

T

he world of fashion is always exciting for us at OHLALA. We celebrate and empower all of its forms. In this spirit, we visited and explored the 18th edition of Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition 2021 in Doha. The event creates a collaborative setting where up-and-coming local and international designers, entrepreneurs and fashion enthusiasts meet. In this inspiring environment, we had the chance to chat with Rosette Fares – and yes, you read right, the iconic French brand Printemps is coming to town. Printemps Doha was the platinum sponsor of Heya under the title Luxury Fashion Partner, and its Marketing and Communications Director told us all about this audacious project. OHLALA - Printemps is a historical brand and one of the oldest department stores in France. Can you tell us about the brand's history, its evolution, and what we can expect in Qatar? Rosette Fares - Printemps is one of the leading French department store chains, founded in 1865 in Paris to provide a world of luxury retail and exclusive and bespoke experiences to every visitor that steps into any of its stores. Situated in the 9th Arrondissement of Paris, Printemps Haussmann is a department store selling the biggest names in fashion, beauty and luxury products. Categorically organised throughout three buildings, products are displayed on 27 levels and 43,500sq/m of floor space. Printemps has 19 stores across France that welcome over 100 million guests annually. Printemps Doha will be the brand's largest store in the Middle East and the second-largest in the world after the flagship at Boulevard Haussmann in Paris. Designed by the internationally renowned duo Yabu Pushelberg, the vast retail space of more than 40,000sq/m will house premier outlets with an extensive range of luxury, fashion, accessories, lifestyle, beauty, technology and F&B brands, as well as exceptional services.

35

OHLALA - You were the Platinum Sponsor of Heya Exhibition as the Luxury Fashion Partner. Can you explain more about the objective of this participation? Will Printemps Doha keep supporting local events that involve Qatari and regional designers? Rosette - Our decision to support the 18th edition of Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition 2021 falls in line with the vision of Printemps Doha. Besides bringing the latest trends and exclusive brands in the fashion industry and exquisite food and beverage outlets, Printemps is set to become a fashion hub in the Middle East and a platform for young Qatari and regional designers to showcase their creations. Printemps Doha will support and empower the local and regional young designers/talents. We are looking into creating collaborations with Virginia Commonwealth University to give students practical exposure to how to develop projects in a real-life business environment. And we are also working on a partnership with M7 (a start-up hub for local fashion, design and tech entrepreneurs in Doha) to provide their designers and creatives with a space that they can utilise for broader exposure. More information on this partnership will be revealed soon. OHLALA - We've learnt that Printemps Doha will open as one of the operators of the new unique destination, Doha Oasis. Can you tell us more about this one-of-a-kind entertainment destination? Rosette - Doha Oasis is a new entertainment destination in Qatar that offers a holistic experience for Qataris, residents of the country and its visitors – a signature place that promotes a new and unique way of life. The 440,000sq/m development consists of a five-star hotel, high-end residential apartments, sophisticated retail and entertainment facilities. Whether you are a guest at the hotel, a resident or visiting its entertainment options – Doha Oasis offers a new concept in leisure. Conceiveded by renowned interior designer Jacques Garcia, the hotel Banyan Tree Doha is part of this complex, with 126 suites distributed on 29 floors offering five outstanding dining destinations. Quest is Qatar's largest high-tech indoor amusement park with 32,000sq/m featuring kids' rides, interactive games and roller coasters. It holds two Guinness World Records as the tallest indoor roller coaster (55m) and tallest drop tower (45m). Vox Cinemas brings the most opulent cinema experience in Qatar to complete the entertainment offerings. It provides 19 screens, luxury VIP immersions, IMAX megascreens and a multi-sensory movie-watching concept, the 4DX. More than you could ever expect – all in one place.

OHLALA

Spotlight OHLALA - What, in your opinion, are the key elements that make Qatar and Printemps a good fit? What aspects connect this opulent brand to this influential and sophisticated-in-taste country? Rosette - We know that Paris is the capital of fashion, where many of the current luxury brands have been introduced. They attract millions of customers that are emotionally connected to this dreamy scenario and want to embrace this incredible way of living. Printemps Doha is set to be positioned as the bridge that connects the West and the East, bringing Parisian glamour to the luxury lifestyle arena in the region providing products that suit the taste of Qatari and Middle Eastern consumers. We also need to highlight that Doha is becoming a fashion reference in the Middle East. We have witnessed many fashion-oriented happenings in the country. Such as the exhibitions Christian Dior Designer of Dreams (the first of this scale in the Middle East) and Virgil Abloh: "Figures of Speech", bringing creations from the late artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection. The designer's first museum exhibition in the Middle East. Printemps Doha emphasises this revolution in fashion in the Arab world. Through innovation, specifically in this field, and reinforcing its role as a trendsetter, Printemps has always stressed and pushed essential themes such as women's empowerment. We are proud of this historical evolution and are keen to follow the same path in Qatar. OHLALA - Can you tell us more about Printemps Doha's plans and when it will open? Rosette – To understand the magnitude of this enterprise, we have to highlight that Printemps Doha will be the second largest Printemps store in the world. We are excited about the epic cutting-edge technologies that will be available to elevate our guests' experience. This amazing space will bring exquisite and exclusive restaurants and first-time fashion and jewellery brands in the region – with over 100 exclusive, high-end brands showcased for the first time in the

Gulf region. Our clients will also be pampered with personal shopper assistance, virtual celebrity stylists consulting and concierge services. They will also have the prospect of pre-ordering the latest fashion collections, purchasing exclusive art customisation, and being presented with bespoke pieces designed exclusively for Printemps Doha. The opening is scheduled for the Q3 of 2022. OHLALA - You have worked with luxury brands in the course of your career. However, Printemps brings a different angle involving beauty and fashion; how exciting is it for you to work with such a globally known brand? Rosette - Over the past 13 years of residing and working in Doha, I had the honour to witness the huge development in the Qatari market throughout all business sectors. I am immensely excited to be part of such a unique project that is definitely very different and combines a large mix of luxury brands in fashion as well as culinary experiences. It is the dream of every marketer and communicator to lead the launch of brands functioning in the luxury sector. Working on this project has already taken my career to the next level. Adding to this, working in a market that values luxury brands and has a strong appetite for luxury goods and culinary experiences is an exceptional experience. It has been a pleasure seeing the positive reaction and excitement of every partner we approach or entity we work with. I will do my best to leave a timeless impression on our esteemed guests who are already sharing a warm welcome to the store and are looking forward to its opening.

arrard are breaking new ground with the launch of their latest collection, championing the varied colours of the rainbow to encapsulate a ‘bright and bold elegance’. Wings Embrace Tropical is inspired by the diversity of natural hues and has adopted the ombre style to capture nature’s wonderful array of changing colours and their seamless wave of transition. Fitted in a wing design, the flow of colours is captured exquisitely with delicate gemstones and classic diamonds. Honouring nature and the animal kingdom, the openwork winged designs are named after some of the most beautiful birds. The phoenix, for instance, is known as a mythical bird being reborn from its own ashes, encapsulated in the set with the same name, featuring bright orange and yellow sapphires. The flamingo, a bird easily spotted in the region during wintertime, is the name given to the pink set of winged jewellery with a ripple of pink rubies and sapphires. The peacock is known for its dazzling explosion of greens and blues, perfectly captured in the set with the same name, presenting a fusion of light aquamarine gems and dark garnets. The dove, representing purity and peace, is caught in the fourth set, with simple yet endlessly charming diamonds. Next, the raven can be seen through dark ebony diamonds contrasted with white diamonds. Lastly, birds of paradise, whose various hues are shown in the set called ‘Paradise’ through pink sapphires and gorgeous violet and azure sapphires.

JEWELS

Delicate and feminine pieces are the key elements in Chopard’s Precious Lace Collection. A dainty detail to add to your looks.

40

www.ohlalamag.net

T

he luxury jewellery brand Chopard is back on the playing field with a new collection embracing the fusion of elegant lace and timeless diamonds. The Precious Lace Collection is committed to Chopard’s ceaseless aim of dismantling formality and adorning your skin with jewellery for ‘every day, every occasion, and every woman’. As jewels and fabric are intertwined, the intricate shapes of the gems come to signify the delicate artistry and agility of lace, which was perfected by hand craftsmen in 17thcentury Venice, whence it spread to the rest of Europe. Lace was originally made from linen, silk or metallic gold threads and in the 19th century, cotton was the new material used. The making of lace would normally involve three key specialists: the designer; the pattern maker, who translated the designs onto parchment; and the lacemaker, who would finally apply those designs onto the lace. Back in the early days, the fabric became an expensive luxury item due to the difficulty of its production and

was worn as a mark of aristocracy and sophistication by royals and the like. Nowadays, lace is made mainly by machines and is widely worn, both in formal and casual settings. Inspired by the ‘lightness and whiteness’ of this intricate textile, The Precious Lace Collection serves as the prime embodiment of the beautiful characteristics of the material, with a weaving of gold and diamond creating floral patterns, scrolls, swirls and scalloped edges as the chief shapes. The main design of the collection, namely that of a rhythmic rippling gold and diamond set curl enclosing an unfurling file of pearshaped diamonds, is now presented through several miniaturised forms. The Vague line comprises earrings, a pendant and a ring, with patterns of a foaming sea billow. And the Mini-Froufrou includes a set of earrings, a pendant, a ring and a bangle, adorned with a stylised flower motif with scalloped borders and pear-shaped diamond petals.

Glow Like

A Goddess

The past year hasn’t been kind to anyone. Frankly, it’s been exhausting and, with the holiday season upon us, who doesn’t need an afternoon escape? Homara Choudhary discovered that the luxurious five-star Saray Spa, tucked away on the seventh floor of the Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel, is a majestic oasis of calm. 58

emoved from the hustle and bustle of Doha’s busy streets, I stepped into an urban retreat right in the heart of the city. The décor was dark and sumptuous with warm wood tones. The atmosphere peaceful and serene, lit with aromatic candles. My shoulders instantly relaxed and my mood lifted. Upon my arrival my therapist, Susi, offered me a refreshing cold towel and a delicately flavoured detox Tamarind Lemonade. After going through a detailed consultation, we opted for the African-inspired, 90-minute Signature Sleep Improvement Massage. The ideal treatment for busy lifestyles and perfect for fighting jet lag. There are seven palatial treatment rooms at the spa, each one named after an aromatic plant. I was shown the tranquil relaxation areas, the steam room and the sauna. There is also a designated couples’ treatment room. After changing into a soft, white, terry cloth robe, I was ushered into the ‘Citrus’ treatment room where Susi was ready to work her magic. As she began by washing my feet with soapy warm water, Susi explained the spa uses ancient healing techniques in their treatments and locallysourced products as much as possible. My feet proceeded to be soaked in milk, known for its nourishing properties to soften the skin. I felt like Cleopatra. Susi then scrubbed my toes with a soap containing sea salt and lemon, pressing them gently in the water before drying them off.

Having frequented many of Doha’s five-star spas, this was one of the few times I wasn’t freezing cold. Not only was the room comfortably warm, but the massage table was also heated! As soothing music played in the background, Susi placed a hot towel on my back to get my circulation going before she gently massaged my shoulders and back with warm almond oil. As she firmly kneaded my skin, I could feel the tension slowly being released. After turning over, I was given a sublime head massage. I could feel each ball of tension gradually being erased one by one. Using firm strokes the stubborn knots along my neck and shoulders also gradually loosened. She then gently worked on relaxing my facial muscles. I could literally feel the stress melting away. As Susi worked on my pressure points, using a combination of stretches and firm massage, she explained that the last 15 minutes of the treatment would involve guided meditation using a Himalayan ball, a rain stick and chimes. As I listened to the soft melodic tones of the instruments, it wasn’t long before I felt like I was floating and slowly drifted off into a deep sleep.

I was gently woken out of my dreamlike state for my rejuvenating, antiageing, oxygen treatment. My face needed to look as restored as the rest of me and I was ready for my non-surgical facelift. This skin quenching facial was perfect for functions or special occasions. It uses hyaluronic acid technology, ideal for parched skin. The unique technique allows the Rejuvenate Profession Serum to sink deep into the epidermis, providing intense hydration. The specifically designed serum contains vitamins A, C and E and antioxidants that dramatically lift and tone the skin. It also reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Susi began the non-invasive treatment by first cleansing my face. After patting it dry, she switched on the airbrush device and slowly began to work across my face. I could feel a cool breeze cascading over me. The pressure was minimal and I barely felt the light air strokes. It was surprisingly gentle and it wasn’t long before my skin was bright and glowing. The results were dramatic and instant. Because there was no recovery time, I was able to get ready and head straight to dinner that evening. My mind, face and body had been restored and I felt completely renewed and transformed. The perfect way to spend an indulgent afternoon for one.

NEW YEAR INSPIRATION Not surprisingly, the exceptional conditions of the last couple of years have affected how we inhabit our lifestyle spaces. With the dawn of 2022, you may be thinking of giving your home a facelift to welcome the new year. We’ve investigated some of the coming trends.

Maxi Vs Mini Minimalism has seen its ups and downs but the pandemic has brought out a new dimension of the trend. With remote working and social separation being a constant presence in our lives, traditional minimalist designs are harder to maintain. A growing demand for multifunctional spaces and versatility has encouraged a middle-ground between minimalism and maximalism, with more people allowing themselves the luxury of answering to their wants instead of simply their needs. And needs themselves have changed, especially with the onset of remote working and schooling. Homes have become not just homes, but schools, offices, gyms, study rooms and the like. With spaces needing to cater to different functions, 2022 will see every nook and cranny being utilised to meet our wants and needs.

Nature Conquers All “Perhaps because humanity has never needed the healing powers of nature more than we do at this moment, there is a quest to take this approach even deeper,” says Michael Lamb – editorial director of The Trend Curve. The past two years have seen an increasing want and care for nature, with natural colours and organic tones being paramount to feeling at ease in these troubled times. Lockdowns and closures have similarly inspired a return to nature’s many beauties and a reminder of the planet’s various tones, including olive greens, fresh blues and earthy auburn browns. Black and dark tones are taking centre stage as they add depth to minimalist designs and a return to natural tones.

Suitable Scents Designers and trendsetters, such as Lisa White, who previously curated the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, told AD PRO (an authoritative, opinionated editorial resource from @archdigest for design-world insiders) that scents will continue to have a strong presence in homes, with people looking to enrich the experience of their habitats through varying senses. “Perhaps the home office will be scented with sage to promote mental acuity, while the bedroom will be scented with orange blossom to promote calm and sleep, and the living room with something cosy and festive like the fragrance of a crackling fire,” she said. But beware, if you have pets, certain diffusers and other scent options, including some candles, can be extremely toxic to your furry friends. Likewise, if you opt to scent your home with real flowers, stay away from plants such as lilies and orchids which are also poisonous to many animals, even in very small amounts.

Sustainability Stories Due to current supply chain-induced shortages and a desire to support sustainability and the environment, it’s expected the coming year will see further calls to reduce, reuse and recycle those items we (or our friends) already have in our homes. Wildfires, atypical weather, such as floods, and climate urgency have sparked the demand for sustainable solutions. According to designers such as Rozit Arditi, of Arditi Design, 2022 will see a growing push to care for the environment and use upcycled waste materials and discarded objects. The past couple of years have also seen a surge in the number of sites selling pre-loved furniture and art online. One of our favourites is 1stdibs.com which features international sellers and individuals offering high-end pieces at a fraction of the normal price. They may not always ship to our part of the world but the site is great for inspiration. Comfort is King Gone, for now, are the days of edgy interiors. With the new normal came curved and comfortable and it’s here to stay. Curves in furniture design have long been accepted as providing a sense of security, from the arms and enveloping backs of our sofas (or, indeed, the whole sofa) to sculptural pieces that give a feeling of flow. Look out for more of these feminine features in 2022. Houston-based designer Dennis Brackeen speaking to Veranda (an American lifestyle magazine with its focus on homes) described curves as “a freedom from the feel of limitations within a rigorously structured space.” Let There Be Light With lockdowns and a sense of tight spaces came the need for the presence of natural light and larger windows, blurring the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors. House plants have been a very welcome breath of fresh air, just when we needed them most, and they will continue to be so in the coming year. These leafy friends provide a lifeaffirming touch of green and serve as beautiful décor. Old is Gold Out goes the new, in comes the old. Writing desks and home libraries are re-entering the market, with people seeking out these old-fashioned trends. With a growing urge to be sustainable and a return to oldfashioned furniture comes the reuse of antiques, be it grandma’s old dining set or slivers of unique material. Not only does this support sustainability, it also adds personality to your home, showing a unique appreciation of the past and of history. New York-based interior designer Lilse McKenna told Veranda: “Our younger clients are more interested in buying antiques than ever before and, based on the supply-chain predictions we're seeing now, I'm guessing this will only continue in 2022.”

64

OHLALA

Homes

Personal Touch “After spending so much time scrolling through Instagram over the past two years, I think we are all tired of spaces that are void of personality or look like copies of spaces we've seen before," says Lilse McKenna. She predicts 2022 will see a rise in the evasion of common trends and a desire to explore more personalised spaces and expressive interiors, exchanging the customary Instagram interior décor for a more unique look. Colour Coordinated Kim Armstrong, of Kim Armstrong Interior Design, predicts the resurrection of the iconic red of the nineties as she examines a growing tendency for people to make bolder choices when it comes to the design of their homes. Not only is it striking, but red will always be one of those classic shades that makes anything look glorious and it can work with everything from casual to regal designs.

Luxurious Shores Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a precious Maldivian gem and OHLALA’s Layal El Mahmoud had the pleasure of experiencing a blissful stay at this stunning destination.

O

nly 15 minutes away from Velana International Airport, Male, by speedboat, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa will have you in awe from the moment it comes into view. Less than a kilometre long and no more than 30 metres wide at any point; Emboodhu Finolhu, or the island of the three coconut trees, is home to Taj Exotica. We arrived at the resort’s jetty to the sound of beautiful beating drums mixed with serene ocean melodies. Handmade shell necklaces were placed around our necks as we received the warmest welcome ever. We hopped onto the hotel’s buggy and the food and beverage (F&B) manager escorted us to our room, giving us a quick tour of the island on the way. Yes, it is such a small narrow island – but in the best private way possible! An appealing old tree, inhabited by green and purple orchids, marks the starting point. The spacious reception on one side; 24 Degrees, the all-day dining restaurant, on the other. A shop and a library are nearby and a long, slim path under a surreal canapé of local trees, travels among beach villas and over-water villas. Just as we reached the lagoon where our Deluxe Lagoon Pool Villa was located, we peeked at the infinity pool. A sign said Deep End Restaurant and we instantly admired the intelligent name! The villa was snug with a warm atmosphere, and well laid out to accommodate all your vacation needs. Our favourite part was the private infinity pool, surrounded by a chaise longue with a table and two arm chairs. We also loved how the TV stand doubled as the mini bar where the coffee machine and kettle were placed thoughtfully. The bed was just the right size and a ‘Welcome to Taj’ message was prettily laid across it using carefully cut coconut leaves… this takes serious time – and we really appreciated the gesture. Adi, our friendly butler, went through the itinerary with us then swiftly left us to ourselves telling us he would be back at 7pm to take us for dinner. We were hungry, we unpacked quickly, slipped into our swimwear and headed to 24 Degrees to order the mixed seafood grill. A huge plate filled our table; shrimps, calamari, mussels, three different kinds of fish steaks including salmon, and the local tuna, plus the king of all seafood, the local reef lobster. With green salad and fries, this plate was enough for more than two people. Afterwards, we headed back to our own pool for a much-needed chill.

Escapes

At 7pm sharp, Adi was at the door. We were ready to experience Deep End. In the Maldives, and in Taj Exotica, you are always surrounded by wood, from the furniture and villas to the green environs. Such a privilege not to be trapped in concrete. Deep End is the only restaurant built on top of the water, in a ring shape. The tables are arranged around an opening in the floor which allows you to watch baby sharks swimming… incredible! The restaurant serves a regular and a vegetarian set menu. The latter offers a light tomato soup and delicious garlicky asparagus risotto. Whilst the seafood soup and reef lobster grill are just as delightful! We followed up with the rich and creamy chocolate mousse with olive oil-based ice cream – one tasty culinary surprise! Sleep cannot be more comfortable than in the bed of a five-star resort. We woke up the next day all fresh and energised. The extravagant floating breakfast arrived perfectly on time. We jumped in the water and took great Insta pictures. The breakfast options range from porridge to omelette and eggs benedict, Maldivian Massuni and tuna curry, to masala dosa, Korean rice and beef bowl, bread, waffles, and a great jam selection as well as fresh fruits. To enjoy this amazing selection to the max, we had to reschedule our first activity of the day. Snorkelling is a must. Using the snorkelling kit provided to all guests by the resort’s diving centre, we took the fixed ladder down to the lagoon. The water was crystal clear, and the fins made swimming easy. The lagoon is home to a rainbow of fish, it was amazing! Our next lunch took a massive luxurious twist when the F&B manager suggested trying the ‘200-dollar Pizza’. At the pool restaurant, with milliondollar views, the executive chef personally laid it down at our table. A colony of the world’s most premium ingredients. A quattro of duck and foie gras from France, Wagyu beef carpaccio and black olives from Australia, prosciutto and black truffle from Parma, Italy, and finally homegrown reef lobster, are laid on a crispy base covered with a generous layer of cream cheese and garnished with Iranian caviar and edible gold leaves with a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar. A complimentary sparkling beverage accompanied the incredible meal to leave us in total awe! Another extraordinary food feat we tried was the jaw-dropping Lobster Burger. On a huge wooden board, the burger comes with fries, onion rings, and both green and coleslaw salads. This burger is bursting with tender flavourful lobster meat, and is one gigantic meal for two (or more). What an experience! Other activities to put on your list include the discovery drive to watch baby black tip sharks feed on tuna chunks, as well as the guided snorkel trip which is a truly indescribable experience - one glance under the water is enough to capture your emotions. We also witnessed the stingray feeding on the resort’s beach before we headed back to the speedboat docked at the jetty for the perfect Sunset Cruise and dolphin watching. At Taj Exotica Resort & Spa many of our dreams came true; seeing a pod of wild dolphins was the most soul-elevating gift. With a sunset worth a thousand words – this is one place that will always hold a special place in our hearts.

A Journey of

Latin Fusion

Nestled elegantly in the centre of the city lies the most exciting South American restaurant to land on these shores, IKA. Homara Choudhary visited to try out the mixture of flavours.

L

ocated on the ground floor of the Aleph Doha Residences in West Bay, which is part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, IKA can be found at the end of the lobby and, just like its food, the décor is subtly sophisticated, instantly making you feel comfortable. The light and airy space beckoned us in. The atmosphere was vibrant and inviting, the music enchanting and fun. As we were seated at our table, I caught a glimpse of the open kitchen, which was full of excitement and

72

activity as the chefs prepared orders for one of the busiest nights of the week. Yassine, who was a new member of the IKA team, recommended we try a few of the famous South American appetisers and, while we waited for our mains, we were served guacamole. I am quite particular about my avocados, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover it tasted as good as it looked. It was tangy yet perfectly balanced. Garnished with pomegranate and sesame seeds, it was delicious and the portion was plentiful.

CHIC

Eats

The Executive Chef, Edgar Hurtado, who has been in the Middle East for more than a decade and was previously at Toro Toro, offered us a creation he had prepared especially for the evening; Beef Tataki. Aromatic and thinly sliced, it was overlaid with a delicate, zesty sauce, revealing its Japanese heritage. Each morsel was a joy as the tender meat almost dissolved on contact. Peruvian Chef Edgar was passionate about each and every dish. He said his vision was to create a unique and memorable menu and with Qatar hosting the World Cup next year he wanted to “combine different flavours from all over the world, creating an Asian synthesis”. His passion for food was clearly reflected in the quality of the dishes he created. The arepas was the show-stopper of the night. The Venezuelan corn flour pancakes were a delight. Stuffed with manchego cheese, they were topped with sour cream and sprinkled with mozzarella. This signature dish will send your taste buds straight into orbit.

Next were the braised short ribs. They made a magnificent entrance on a tray of warm stones. Each one was individually wrapped in a bamboo leaf and placed on a bed of truffle cauliflower and potato patacones. Having been slowly cooked for hours, the meat was soft and tender and bursting with rich flavours. I savoured each mouthful as the flesh melted like butter. The Spring Salad was exceptional. Grilled halloumi lay on a bed of quinoa, fresh mixed leaves and baby spinach. The crunchy corn, cherry tomatoes and grated carrots were drizzled with a light tomato dressing. A sublime explosion of flavours that were beautifully balanced. Chef Edgar was as attentive as his staff. He wouldn’t let us stop there and insisted the best was yet to come. And he was right. The grilled chicken glazed in miso, literally fell off my fork, it was tender, aromatic and flavoursome. The texture was as smooth as the sauce it was marinated in.

No meal is complete without dessert and the Chef ’s Table was the perfect way to end what had truly been the perfect meal. A dish designed to wow a crowd, the giant man-made tray contained something for everyone and is ideal for sharing. But if I had to choose just one dessert it would have to be the Saffron Tres Leches. The sought-after milk cake is served with orange cream and two scoops of mango and pistachio ice cream. The combination of flavours complemented each other superbly. A very close second were the super light South American pastries, Alfajores. The crumbly cookies were filled with creamy dulce de leche caramel. Beautifully made and devilishly moreish to eat. They were absolutely scrumptious. It’s easy to see why IKA is so popular, especially among foodies. From the appetisers to the main courses, right through to the desserts, each course was simply exquisite and brilliantly executed. The staff were equally impressive. It’s also worth noting that this fabulous eatery does a fantastic business lunch and has a happy hour daily from 4pm to 8pm. An ideal choice for making a lasting impression.

I

t’s been 20 years since the successful launch of the modern MINI, with the brand still enjoying solid sales on these well-loved vehicles. The MINI brand has become known for its agile driving capabilities, high technology standards and overall superior quality compared to many other competitors in its segment. Now this beloved British brand has evolved into the latest model generation, with the MINI three-door, MINI five-door and MINI Convertible all being given an intensive makeover. This month, we at OHLALA Magazine were handed the keys to our very first MINI experience, compliments of the outstanding team at Alfardan Automobiles Showroom. We were fortunate enough to be offered the MINI three-door John Cooper Works (JCW) Edition for the day. The JCW models are high-performance

vehicles, fitted with superior engines, interiors and performance capabilities, along with unique exteriors. The MINI’s new front design displays the characteristic hexagonal radiator grille, an enlarged black surround as well as the hallmark round MINI headlights. These headlights are LED and are now fitted as standard. Typical MINI proportions and short overhangs define the view of the flanks, whilst the freshly designed, characteristic side scuttles compliment the new body colours, including the 18-inch, Circuit Spoke Black Design, JCW light-alloy wheels. The rear apron too has been upgraded in looks, with LED back lights in the Union Jack design now fitted as standard. The original multitone roof and matching exterior mirror caps are beautiful to look at and amongst the most striking features of the vehicle. All-in-all, we found the exterior to be aesthetically pleasing and well put together.

"The JCW models are high-performance vehicles, fitted with superior engines, interiors and performance capabilities, along with a unique exterior.”

Internally, our JCW model housed a stylish, comfortable and wellequipped cabin. The supportive sport seats provide a great driving position, whilst the quality materials, finishes and trimmings used throughout the interior are usually to be found in a vehicle with a much higher price tag. The JCW trim also features a nappa leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and larger thumb rests, JCW door sill trims, an anthracite-coloured roof liner and stainless-steel pedals. Eccentric elements have also been incorporated into the interior design such as the LED light ring framing the central instrument. This MINI’s 8.8-inch colour touchscreen display comes complete with SiriusXM satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, touch-sensitive ‘favourite buttons’, Piano Black high-gloss surfaces as well as Bluetooth phone and streaming audio. A multifunctional instrument display, five inches in diameter, is present behind the steering wheel and displays all drivingrelevant information, check-control messages and status displays of the driver assistance systems. Additionally, the operating system controller situated on the centre console now sports an all-black surface along with a navigation system. A choice of two colour schemes for the central instrument and digital cockpit displays can be accessed through the control system menu.

Performance wise, the MINI John Cooper Works is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four, petrol engine. Combined with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, this zippy vehicle produces 231hp or 170kW. This allows the MINI JCW to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds and to deliver a top speed of 246km/h. Boasting adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes and an electrically locking front differential, this exceptional compact car delivers precise handling and a go-kart feeling experience. In fact, we spent several hours embracing the sporty feel of this roadhugging vehicle, never without a huge smile on our faces. The JCW comes with a Driver Assistance Package with an extended range of functions. These functions ensure maximum comfort and safety and include new lane departure warning, new Active Cruise Control (now featuring a stop and go function) and standard automated emergency braking. Thanks to consistently optimised emission control technology, all model variants comply-with the Euro 6d emission standard. Our first experience in the new three-door MINI JCW Edition was thoroughly enjoyable and we can honestly say that the fun factor of this magnificent little machine is amongst the highest we have ever experienced.

Looking FORWARD Whether you think about it or not, this feeling is part of everyone’s life – we all wish for something, and this positive emotion helps us get there.

KAROLINA GRABOWSKA ON PEXELS

Hope – the word that we carry close to our hearts at the start of every New Year. A feeling that tells you the future can bring better days and helps you keep moving. A positive sensation that reduces the state of helplessness, increases happiness and reduces stress, resulting in improved quality of life. Charles Richard Snyder was an American psychologist who specialised in positive psychology and created Snyder’s Hope Theory. The word hope in his studies means the ability to stay motivated when walking certain paths leading to the desired destination. Snyder believed that much of human behaviour is goal-oriented, so hope and specific objectives walk hand in hand. According to him, to develop a feeling of hope, you need to have focused thoughts; you must develop strategies in advance in order to reach your goals and be motivated to make the effort required to successfully attain them. The more you believe in your ability to achieve these components, the greater are the chances of developing this feeling. Use this moment of new beginnings to develop hope in you. Create goals, think positive and don’t let setbacks destroy your dreams. You might have to adapt your wishes and the ways to conquer them along the way, but don’t lose your will. You can do this!
