ashion used to change with every season. But now it seems it changes by the second. With artistic directors moving in and out, shifting from house to house, fashion is having many an evolutionary moment. I can’t think of a better issue to highlight these changes than in our September issue. As the AW16 shows are well behind us, we can peel back from them and really dissect the new pieces that will ultimately find a place in our wardrobes. We have our bi-annual trend report, looking closely at the nuances of the season and picking out the most statement-making looks. I have always favoured comfort above all else without skimping on style mind you, so the advent of luxe sportswear is the perfect compromise and in my books, is a keeper. Followed by a comprehensive guide on what to buy to get a head-start for the months ahead, the essential pieces we’ve rounded up are versatile, daring and offer twists on classic fits. I have my eye on puffy, dramatic sleeves – it speaks volumes of style and sophistication and makes you the centre of attention. We of course always look to the international shows for the best fashion advice – it’s like a natural reflex. But since discovering the vast amount of talented designers on our shores (and there are so many it can make your head spin) we have dedicated a big slice of the magazine to the crème de la crème of the region’s names to know among the fashion elite. Elsewhere in the magazine we have the beauty trends to match to help take you from summer to autumn in an effortless way and of course we have our usual sections to keep you on your toes and continue to live the fabulously high life!

Creating style is always about twisting classics to bring out new motifs and the best in traditional wear. Asymmetrical hemlines and random cuts of fabric sticking out in the most odd places is what we like to call wonky fashion. It can be so mad, it’s brilliant.

...for Valentino The house of romance has given even more reason to fall in love with them all over again. Under the creative supervision of Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, the latest pieces from the Ready-To-Wear and Haute Couture collections melded feminine graciousness with sartorial precision to give the best season yet

There was some uncertainty as the lights went down at the AW16 Valentino show. Sat in traditional runway arrangement, flanking the catwalk, it was an intimate setting despite being full to the brim with industry greats. Instead of a recorded soundtrack, we were treated to a live piano performance by Vanessa Wagner who played works by John Cage and Phillip Glass on a baby grand Yamaha positioned in the middle of the audience. She walked over in the dead silent auditorium and in swan-like poise, sat at her instrument and took hold of the entire atmosphere as she descended into melodic play. What followed was a dreamy presentation of floral fantasies, ballerina brilliance and biker bite. Pierpaolo and Maria were taken by the Russian and the New York City ballet, which saw the unraveling of a non narrative thread that choice instinct to logic, releasing primordial energies. The entire sequence chimed perfectly to the shifting aesthetics: from gentle dancers to regal high necks to layers of mannish wear, the show was a several act play with a definitive finale bringing all the moments of darkness, romance and earthiness together with beautiful movement. There was so much to dance about. www.ohlala-magazine.com

THE PIECES Our favourite accessories and shoes from the RTW collection

Fashion Philosophy We saw the collection evolve with every look at that came our way. You have military coats protecting impalpable dresses. Floral tutus become meager tops; flared skirts are worn with reinterpreted ballet shoes. Fluid draperies in jersey accompany the body. Perceptive bewilderment characterises the robes worn with silk stockings and dance sandals. The dry precision of sartorial discipline, meets floral graciousness and flutters - multiple ruffles, fragile transparencies - in an atmosphere pervaded by a sense of levitas which is the equivalent of joy. The woman is the protagonist of this illustration, free in her gestures and in her thoughts, subject of an experience that bestows to fashion the status of expression and imagination.

Outside The Box

Bold, daring, innovative, fun and different. These are some of the words that naturally come to mind when describing Reemami. We speak with the very humble Reema Al Banna about how she came to putting musical instruments among other quirky objects into her collections

I

t’s always refreshing to see a growing designer maintain their humility when they chat. It’s all too common to speak with the cream of the budding crop and get earfuls of drawn out self-loving rhetoric Better still, it’s always refreshing when a growing designer shows that talent is built upon through taking less than typical routes, in a roundabout way, to the desired destination. It proves you can do whatever you want, whenever it comes to you, without being so linear. Reema Al Banna is the UAE’s answer to the girl next-door phenomenon. She is earthy yet preened, standing at a considerable height with billowy hair and a knowing smile. She hugs you with a tight, longtime girlfriend-like squeeze. Just like her brand, Reema is cool without trying too hard. Expected the unexpected – whether that is an extension socket or an orchestra of musicians playing the violin, this is sophisticated fashion made fun and intriguing. Reemami’s autumn-winter collection has Seventies vibes courtesy of some uber cool bell bottom trousers, majorly flared sleeves on blouses and an air of comfortable volume. Creativity comes in the form of unusual angles, neat slashes of fabric and optimistic colour palettes. Learning that Reema has a graphic design background (Reema later studied at the French Fashion University in Dubai, ESMOD, before launching Reemami in 2009) is when you suddenly have an ‘aha’ moment. She has taken that experimental nature of graphic design and stitched it into her line, giving it its signature identity of being distinct and simply fun. And if there’s any part of the world that takes fashion very seriously and explores sartorial possibilities, it’s our region. “People want something new and fun from regional designers,” explains Reema. But she is also very present in the Parisian market where we recently met her back in March of this year. “There’s a demand for basics, which I have in this collection. Each season I have a new theme, this time it was about sound, rhythm, repetition and music which you can see in the pieces but I also have staple pieces like the work shirt, but reworked in many ways.” Reema’s world is as eclectic as her brand – “big time” she agrees. “My last collection was about foodstagramming and previous to that was about boxing. I am inspired by my surroundings and what is taking the world by storm,” she adds. She is also influenced by surreal art, illustrations and Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto (“he’s so insane, it’s amazing”). How far is she going to push the style envelope though? Is having a fried egg or a trumpet sitting blatantly on a pair of trousers or on a top as far as she will go? “As long as it’s wearable, I’ll do it! Whatever the idea is, it has to be something a woman wants to wear. I’ll constantly experiment with fabrics and cuts. Fashion changes all the time, I want to cater to whatever may not be available in the market. I will hopefully branch out to jewellery and denim within the next couple of years too.” Sold! When we tell her we are so impressed with how innovative and ‘outside the box’ Reemami is, she practically pepper sprays us with gratitude. It’s obvious she won’t rest on her laurels, however much success she commands. And this is what makes Reema and her brand so endearing.

Ohlala Spotlight

Fit for a queen Specialising in handmade leather handbags, LaLaQueen have launched their online boutique in conjunction with their new collection. We speak to the designer behind the brand, Sally Sarieddine

w

hat’s the inspiration behind LalaQueen? LaLaQueen is a contemporary fashion label that specialises in handcrafted leather handbags. Alongside this I aim to create a trend setting, authentic and sustainable brand that complements the global focus on maintaining and protecting natural resources. Where did the label start? Take us from the beginning. It started as a hobby after I completed fashion design courses in Central Saint Martins in London. In 2010 I designed and produced a collection of bags with the help of my friend at the time, Lana Chbaro, which were then noticed by my friend Nouf Al Saud, who invited me to Saudi to exhibit my collection. After selling 46

www.ohlala-magazine.com

out the collection at the exhibition I decided to focus my attention on starting a handbag label. My life coach at the time, Michelle Chedotal, helped me unify my vision whilst Narimane Kurdi, a luxury marketing consultant guided my business decisions. What would you say is your design philosophy? Being mindful in designing timeless and durable pieces that are unique and simple. Tell us about the iconic Dr. Bag design – what inspired it? There is a story in everything that we design. The design for the Dr.Bag stems from a little personal story; I was inspired by a vintage bag that I spotted in an old marketplace, in a little vintage boutique, in Florence during one of my travels to Italy. The bag belonged to a doctor in a village in Florence. I came up with my own interpretation and, today, the Dr.Bag is our

best-seller. You are an advocate of ethical sourcing. Why is this important to you? Because the fashion industry causes a lot of pollution, so being mindful about the process and making choices that little by little can make a difference. I remain mindful about where I source all materials to create timeless pieces which can be enjoyed for a very long time. I do my best to minimise waste where possible, LaLaQueen packaging is 100% recycled and the leather we source is from Lebanon. Our handbags are assembled by highly skilled local artisans who operate under healthy working conditions and we are committed to maintaining strong relationships with our suppliers and their employees. It’s important that as a home-grown brand, we ensure we give back to the community to support the local families of Lebanon. As LaLaQueen continues to

Getting To Know Sally

grow, so will our focus on sustainability. What is your process of creating a customised and sustainable bag? How long does it take? Once we get a customised order we get personal with our client. Sometimes the customisation is only in colours and little details of names and initials, then I brief the production team with the order. Sometimes the customer asks for something very specific, that can take a longer time to process. So in terms of time it depends on the order, and the client - the process can take between three weeks and three months. What does sustainability in fashion mean to you? How has it made a difference in the world around you? Sustainability, responsibility and ethical trade are mindful ways to do things. And I think it’s time for the world to step into the “Mindful Age.” To live in a way where we respect and genuinely

care about our environment. By talking about it we spread awareness and plant seeds and with practice we can shift business dynamics to a much kinder and better place for all. What can consumers do to support sustainability? You can do so much, recycle! Ask where you can recycle your empty make-up cases, and bottles. Give away things that you no longer need. Don’t use a plastic bag every time you buy something from a supermarket. Use environmental friendly products, decrease waste, And also Invest in products and brands that choose sustainability in their business module by becoming a regular customer. Amal Alamuddin has used the bag – how did that feel to see her wearing it? It was amazing! Amal Alamuddin is an inspiration and is the progressive, modern and strong woman that the LaLaQueen brand is geared towards.

Who or what inspires you? I am inspired by books, interesting people, and travel.

Which are the must-have bags in a woman’s wardrobe? A classical and timeless piece for sure.

What is the next step for your brand? We are opening our first flagship store in Beirut which we are very excited about!

What has designing taught you about yourself? What has it taught you about life? Design has taught me a lot of things. The most important is to know when to be ‘stubborn’, and yes, everything that I do influences what I feel for life. I am still in the process of learning new things every day, so as a designer I am always open to learning and exploring more about the world. New

Beginnings

A new season brings the chance to wipe the slate clean and start afresh when it comes to getting into a better beauty regime. Angela Beitz tells us how Wear SPF daily

Sun protection is so important, especially in the harsh climate of the GCC. Sunscreen should be part of your morning routine as much as brushing your teeth. Foundations that include a SPF over 30+ are perfect to protect your face and often give you a nice glow. Find a good sunscreen that is mositurising and slather it on in the mornings.

Take off your make-up before bed

We’ve all been guilty in the past of this one, but it wreaks havoc on your skin and clogs your pores. It’s so important to give your skin a thorough clean and to spend at least ten minutes a night on a routine that includes cleanser, toner, a good serum and night cream. Even if you are super lazy, try leaving face wipes beside your bed so that you can ensure to take your make-up off or use a Micellar Water cleanser for quick make-up removal. Upon rising, exfoliate your skin and use a deep cleansing mask to remove hidden impurities.

Don’t overuse product

With so many products to choose from these days it can be super overwhelming when choosing the right products. In terms of skincare, it’s always best to get back to basics and use products that work hard

for you. Use a good cleanser that will clean your skin without stripping moisture, a serum that works for your skin type and moisturisers that address your skin’s needs (dryness, anti-ageing, oiliness etc). When it comes to haircare the same rules apply. Use a shampoo and conditioner that are suited to your hair type and a mask to be used twice a week.

Clean your make-up brushes

Unwashed make-up brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause nasty breakouts on your skin. It seems like such a simple thing but finding the time to clean your brushes can be hard. Clean brushes are also much more precise when applying product and you don’t want to mix your beautiful beige eyeshadow with your dark black shimmery eyeshadow.

Ease up on the gel-manicures

We all love a gel-mani for their no chip staying power and glossy shine but they are terrible for your nails due to the UV lights and the acetone removers. Give your nails a break by getting a standard manicure or if you are very brave leave them polish free for a few weeks. Use a nourishing cuticle oil daily and taking Hair, Skin and Nail vitamins will really give you stronger nails and you’ll notice a big difference. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Guerlain’s Main Man Guerlain’s very own perfumer, Thierry Wasser gives Ohlala an inside scoop on his beginnings, inspirations and what drives him to excellence

62

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beauty Insight

You started at such a young age in the botany field, how did that transition into the perfumery industry?

I read an article about fragrance houses in Geneva when I was around 19. I wrote them a little note, and had olfactive tests at Givaudan. After this, it introduced me to the school and this is how it all started. So I arrived in this profession by chance, but starting Givaudan’s Perfumes School made me sure that this will be my way. When starting a new fragrance at Guerlain, what is your method of inspiration? Creating a fragrance is like writing a story and the inspiration fortunately comes from my experiences in life as a trip, an encounter, a discussion … It all starts with a story. I’m telling it with scents instead of words. That’s what comes first in my mind. But each process indeed is very different and there are absolutely no rules. And since I joined Guerlain in 2008, I realised how important the creative job is linked to sourcing and manufacturing; it’s the first step when I create a new fragrance. Travelling the world in search for raw materials, what has been your favourite place to visit for a fragrance? They are all dear to me, but South India is very special to me: For the colours, the smells and the local people. What’s the most challenging perfume you’ve put out and why? I joined Guerlain in June 2008, and I very quickly had to work on a new fragrance; I was so excited, so happy to work for this wonderful brand I dreamed of, that I wanted to tell the whole world of my love and happiness. I wanted to shout out loud how wonderful it was to be there, at Guerlain, with the mission to perpetuate such a proud heritage. This is why I created Idylle, it was my first big challenge.

“Creating a fragrance is like writing a story and the inspiration fortunately comes from my experiences in life as a trip, an encounter, a discussion” And it is made with a bunch of roses, which is my favorite scent. I am also very proud of La Petite Robe Noire as well. How do you personally like your perfumes? I like them to be happy and generous. Describe Guerlain’s perfumery? Rich heritage. Excellence of raw materials. What have been the challenges you’ve encountered at Guerlain and at the helm of perfumery? It was impressive to become the new heir of the Guerlain legacy. For instance, take Jacques Guerlain, the genius who created Shalimar and more than 400 Guerlain fragrances during his life. To be the first perfumer of the House who doesn’t belong to the Guerlain family was an honor and a real challenge at the same time. I see this step as a paramount in my career. It is enormous, it is a dream for me, every day I wake up and tell myself that I am very lucky to work in this wonderful brand. Where do you see the perfumery industry shifting in the next five years? I wish I knew! What can we expect from Guerlain in the region, for the future? I am always listening to what local markets have to say, and so far, our Dubai’s HQ is happy with our portfolio. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Local Escapes “We love the open plan marble bathroom with its spacious design with a huge tub and rain shower”

We’re so spoilt for choice here in the capital when it comes to quality hotels. If you are looking for a real escape though, you can’t go past the Park Hyatt. The first thing that strikes us about this property is the stunning view from the lobby overlooking the large pool lined with perfect palm trees and the beautiful beach. It’s the perfect picturesque scene and we feel instantly relaxed. Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas is a 5-star luxury beach resort in Abu Dhabi nestled along the pristine beach of Saadiyat Island. The resort lies on a vast stretch of environmentally protected white sand beach adjacent to the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. After a swift check in with the friendly staff we are shown to our sea view room which looks over the property to the beach. The room boasts a large terrace which is the perfect spot to sit and relax with a book. The contemporary rooms and suites at the hotel feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, as well as Nespresso machines and minibar. We love the open 74

Once we’ve checked out our room and had a look at the property, we head to dinner at The Park Bar & Grill. This restaurant exudes refinement with high ceilings and an open plan kitchen. Clean and understated tones are seen throughout the restaurant and we appreciate the extreme low lighting. The staff are super professional and helpful and talk us through the menu which consists mainly of steak and seafood options. We start with the tomato and capsicum soup and a burrata salad. The burrata salad is perfect, served on a bed of Kalamata olives, cherry tomatoes and rocket drizzled with a balsamic glaze. The soup is also a hit with bite sized chunks of avocado topped off with pesto oil. For the main event we can’t go past the Australian wagyu and the Sea Bream. Our steak is perfectly cooked, with a nice rare centre and we opt for the Tarragon Jus on the side which is delicious. We order a side of steam mushrooms to go with it and crispy French fries. The Sea Bream is equally as good, served on a bed of grilled asparagus with blistered cherry tomatoes. After this satisfying dinner we head back to the 5-star comforts of our room to get a good night’s sleep. The next day there is simply nothing better we can think of doing than heading to the beach. The beach and pool at this property are simply outstanding and you can easily spend

Overlooking the Saadiyat waters, the venue’s relaxed and tranquil setting makes for the ideal island retreat. There are so many reasons to love this hotel and one of them is their spa, Atarmia. Spread over two floors, the spa features nine spacious treatment rooms, including one VIP couple’s treatment room as well as indoor and outdoor relaxation zones with the privacy of separate areas for ladies and men. The wellness centre offers an outdoor 25-metre lap pool, an array of hydrotherapy facilities, a manicure and pedicure salon, a fitness room with the latest equipment, a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. We head to the spa and are welcomed and given a refreshing green tea and homemade health cookies while we wait for our therapist. We’re trying the La Alternativa Facial, a non-invasive wrinkle-relaxing solution using Natura Bissé products. We are shown to our treatment room which is spacious and follows the same chic minimalist theme of the overall hotel. We change into a lovely robe and slippers and explain to our therapist that our skin is super dry and dull so we’d really like to get some moisture back into our skin. Our face is thoroughly cleansed and then a glycol peel is applied. The mildly acidic solution was put over our face, neck and upper chest. It tingles slightly but it’s perfect for removing dead skin cells and surface dirt and helps to soften the skin. While we were waiting for the peel to work its magic we were given a relaxing head and then foot massage. Once the peel was removed our face was massage using a serum to lift the skin and to brighten it too. The final step was a heavy hydrating mask that was applied over our entire face including eyes and mouth. The mask plumped our skin beautifully and we skipped out of the spa feeling refreshed. Our stay was pure paradise and we left feeling like we’d had a vacation even though we were still in Abu Dhabi. The property has so much to offer, but it’s best if you want total relaxation, lovely rooms and excellent food. You can’t go wrong. Find your inner CHI We escape to CHI Spa at The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi to unwind with a massage We love a spa treatment here at Ohlala but what

we love even more is when spas offer different treatments that really show results. CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La has a plethora of fantastic treatments to cure all sorts of stress and ailments but this time we are trying the Intuitive Massage. Rather than your average massage, this treatment combines many types of massages depending on what your needs are. The spa draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La legend, a place of personal peace, enchantment and well-being. All massages and treatments are based on authentic natural healing methods found in traditional well-being practices shared by many Asian cultures. CHI’s ancient healing philosophies and rituals are designed to relax and rejuvenate both your body and mind. The space is super calm and serene and we sip a ginger tea while filling out our information and what we want to get out of the treatment. We are shown to the beautiful treatment room with dark timber and modern Asian décor and slip into a fluffy robe. Since we have very tight shoulders and a lot of pain in our upper back and neck, our therapist combines Deep Tissue Massage (targeting the areas that retain the greatest tension and pain deep tissue massage 82

www.ohlala-magazine.com

de-stresses and relaxes the muscles) with Hot Stone Massage (used with hot stones to unleash tension with gliding massage strokes for warm, relaxing treatment benefits). Our therapist also explains that the massage is also good for improving blood circulation and restoring the natural flow of energy in our body and that the heat from the stones will make us sweat to help us get rid of toxins and excess water. The massage starts by working on our back by first relaxing us with a medium pressure then working up to a very deep pressure to relieve our pain and then continuing on with the hot stones. Once our therapist is finished with our back, the hot stones are placed all the way down our spine to further the process of relieving tension. Our legs are then massaged and are also stretched to really try and release pain in our hips and other joints. The same is repeated with the hot stones and this feels particularly good on our calves which are very tight. When our back was done, we are turned over for the final position of our sides and front half, focusing also on our stomach region and then our head is massaged as we drift off into a light slumber. This treatment is unbelievably relaxing and really works to help all our sore spots. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and light. Culinary Insight

Fresh Flavours We try the delicious new menu at 18 Degrees which boasts delicious Mediterranean fare It’s not every day you get to dine in a restaurant

that leans at 18 degrees. The aptly named restaurant is on the 18th floor of the five-star Hyatt Capital Gate, best known for its curved architecture. 18 Degrees is not new on the dining scene in Abu Dhabi, but rather a chic and modern restaurant that continues to stand the test of time. This beautiful venue boasts both indoor and outdoor seating in a spacious setting with slick décor. The restaurant has just changed concept from a super high-end dining experience to a more relaxed yet still impressive sharing concept. Using simple flavours, 18 Degrees offers specialty dishes inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. The open kitchens add a relaxed feel to the restaurant and it’s fun to watch the chefs at work. As mentioned, the new sharing concept reflects the Mediterranean lifestyle, serving the highest food quality in an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. The menu recommends three dishes per person and we start our meal with the Burrata Salad, Calamari Fritti, Ceviche and Prawn dishes. The Burrata Salad is simply divine with the creamy cheese taking center stage served with shredded basil and super fresh cherry tomatoes. The Calamari Fritti is fresh and crisp served with a spring onion mayonnaise which compliments it perfectly. The Ceviche is fresh and tasty flavoured with lime, chilli, passionfruit and red onion and the prawns which have quickly become a favourite dish for diners are super fresh with loads of garlic, chili and parsley. You could easily have a meal with just the tasty sharing options as they stand but since we really love food we order a main each opting for the Chuletas de Cordero and Seafood Risotto. The Chuletas de Cordero is a delicious lamb short loin with a generous serving of aioli potato and mint sauce. This dish is so good and we’d definitely order it again with its pink centre and perfectly cooked potatoes. The Seafood Risotto is also a hit with fresh and succulent prawns, clams and scallops in a creamy Arborio rice. We also accompany our dishes with a mixed green salad and mushrooms with lemon which go perfectly with our dishes. If you can’t resist dessert (and why should you?) go for the Tiramisu and Almond Pear Tart. You’ll be wowed by the view from the restaurant when you visit, be it day or night with spectacular views looking back over Abu Dhabi city. The staff are also excellent, super friendly and knowledgeable without the feeling of the in-your-face stuffy fine dining vibe. Whether you are looking for an intimate dinner or a larger gathering with lots of options for sharing, the new menu at 18 Degrees is well worth trying and is sure to become a regular favourite. 18 Degrees, Hyatt Capital Gate, 2 596 1234 84

Diva Drives

Porsche Cayenne S I

The Porsche Cayenne S Redefines the SUV so we did what we do best and took it for a proper diva spin

t is difficult to conceive how improvements can be made to a vehicle as luxurious and efficient as the Porsche Cayenne. However, their in-house motor gurus have somehow managed to level up once again, taking the next generation to new heights in both appearance and performance. Fuel consumption and engine performance are both typical considerations for SUV consumers. Porsche have carefully considered these points and ensure their new offerings boast improved fuel consumption as well as upgraded engine performance. The Cayenne S has an entirely new 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine fully developed by Porsche. When taking in the exterior design of these models, it is clear the appearance has been sharpened. No matter which angle this SUV is 96

approached from, the Cayenne’s precise lines have been artistically designed to grace it with a sleeker demeanour, whilst adding to its powerful presence. Features including all lights, license plate, boot handle, exhaust tailpipes and many additional modifications have all been reworked to add to the quality that is the Porsche Cayenne

“No matter which angle this SUV is approached from, the Cayenne’s precise lines have been artistically designed to grace it with a sleeker demeanour, whilst adding to its powerful presence”

look. An automatic boot lid is now standard to all models. The interior, far from being neglected when it comes to upgrades, has evolved with the driver in mind. Included is a new multifunction sport steering wheel complete with shift paddles. This too will now be standard for all models. But what about efficiency? Porsche has committed to supplying vehicles which offer maximum performance without requiring massive fuel consumption. Despite the power and torque of these magnificent steel beasts having been enhanced, fuel economy has improved, this is due to the coasting function, the further advanced “auto stop-start function plus” and optimised thermal management. The use of cooling flaps are now being used for the first time in the Cayenne.

The Cayenne S The new Porsche-developed 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine of the Cayenne S returns fuel consumption between 9.5 and 9.8 l/100 km, according to the NEDC. The biturbo V6 delivers a maximum power of 420 hp at 6,000 rpm. The car’s torque of 550 Newton metres (+50 Newton metres) is available from 1,350 to 4,500 rpm. The power density per litre of displacement is now 117 hp. With its standard eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds (5.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package) The vehicle’s top speed is 259 km/h.

Gym Phobia

Like our columnist, a self-confessed gym hater, perhaps you too can overcome your fear of exercise classes and start to enjoy working out

I hate the gym. I don’t like exercising for the sake of it unless I’m window shopping. Team sports are bearable as I get distracted in the moment and therefore don’t notice that I’m taking exercise. But my advancing years, combined with my more sedentary lifestyle in the UAE and having a baby, made me realise I needed to take a more proactive approach to fitness. First, I joined Primal at Haddins. I was convinced I would hate every moment of it. How could flipping tyres, running around a stadium and doing burpees be anything other than excruciating, especially in temperatures above 38 degrees? To my astonishment, it was almost fun. The exercises were well planned and function whether you are a beginner (like me) or a Primal veteran. It is sociable and the sessions pass quickly. I enjoyed the challenge and to my utter surprise I discovered I was a relatively good runner; I haven’t run since I was forced to race 1500m and 3000m at school purely because I had long legs. At the end of the month (5 classes per week) I felt fitter, stronger and healthier than I had ever been since my pre-University years. I even signed up for a second month of Primal. Over the summer, I started Body Combat at Abu Dhabi Country Club. I have a vehement dislike for exercise classes. Primarily because I find them boring and I am hilariously uncoordinated, but also because everyone else seems to know 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

what they are doing. I think my fear of exercise classes stems from enforced aerobics classes in a freezing gym hall in my school days. Yet I actually enjoy Body Combat. It involves 55 minutes of choreographed martial arts movements (punching and kicking the air) to some intense beats and the time passes quickly. I’ve also discovered the joy of cycling, albeit sedately. I’ve acquired a baby seat for my bargain bike and my toddler loves it. She frequently puts her cycle helmet and shoes on, goes to the front door and shouts “out, out”. It’s a little tricky to explain to her that it’s currently 48 degrees outside and that it is way too hot for cycling. Bring on the October weather...! But aside from now being able to fit into my pre-UAE clothes, I also have an excuse to go shopping for gym clothes. And there is some great sports wear out there. Victoria Secret has fantastic sports bras and leggings. And high street stores, such as H&M, do a good range of bright tops. My 3 key tips for enjoying working out: (1) find a fun friend to do it with, (2) switch classes or sports until you find something that motivates you, and (3) invest in some hot workout gear.
