ashion used to change with every season. But now it seems it changes by the second. With artistic directors moving in and out, shifting from house to house, fashion is having many an evolutionary moment. I can’t think of a better issue to highlight these changes than in our September issue. As the AW16 shows are well behind us, we can peel back from them and really dissect the new pieces that will ultimately find a place in our wardrobes. We have our bi-annual trend report, looking closely at the nuances of the season and picking out the most statement-making looks. I have always favoured comfort above all else without skimping on style mind you, so the advent of luxe sportswear is the perfect compromise and in my books, is a keeper. Followed by a comprehensive guide on what to buy to get a head-start for the months ahead, the essential pieces we’ve rounded up are versatile, daring and offer twists on classic fits. I have my eye on puffy, dramatic sleeves – it speaks volumes of style and sophistication and makes you the centre of attention. We of course always look to the international shows for the best fashion advice – it’s like a natural reflex. But since discovering the vast amount of talented designers on our shores (and there are so many it can make your head spin) we have dedicated a big slice of the magazine to the crème de la crème of the region’s names to know among the fashion elite. Elsewhere in the magazine we have the beauty trends to match to help take you from summer to autumn in an effortless way and of course we have our usual sections to keep you on your toes and continue to live the fabulously high life!

...for Valentino The house of romance has given even more reason to fall in love with them all over again. Under the creative supervision of Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, the latest pieces from the Ready-To-Wear and Haute Couture collections melded feminine graciousness with sartorial precision to give the best season yet

There was some uncertainty as the lights went down at the AW16 Valentino show. Sat in traditional runway arrangement, flanking the catwalk, it was an intimate setting despite being full to the brim with industry greats. Instead of a recorded soundtrack, we were treated to a live piano performance by Vanessa Wagner who played works by John Cage and Phillip Glass on a baby grand Yamaha positioned in the middle of the audience. She walked over in the dead silent auditorium and in swan-like poise, sat at her instrument and took hold of the entire atmosphere as she descended into melodic play. What followed was a dreamy presentation of floral fantasies, ballerina brilliance and biker bite. Pierpaolo and Maria were taken by the Russian and the New York City ballet, which saw the unraveling of a non narrative thread that choice instinct to logic, releasing primordial energies. The entire sequence chimed perfectly to the shifting aesthetics: from gentle dancers to regal high necks to layers of mannish wear, the show was a several act play with a definitive finale bringing all the moments of darkness, romance and earthiness together with beautiful movement. There was so much to dance about. www.ohlala-magazine.com

35

THE PIECES Our favourite accessories and shoes from the RTW collection

Fashion Philosophy We saw the collection evolve with every look at that came our way. You have military coats protecting impalpable dresses. Floral tutus become meager tops; flared skirts are worn with reinterpreted ballet shoes. Fluid draperies in jersey accompany the body. Perceptive bewilderment characterises the robes worn with silk stockings and dance sandals. The dry precision of sartorial discipline, meets floral graciousness and flutters - multiple ruffles, fragile transparencies - in an atmosphere pervaded by a sense of levitas which is the equivalent of joy. The woman is the protagonist of this illustration, free in her gestures and in her thoughts, subject of an experience that bestows to fashion the status of expression and imagination.

Make A Statement UAE based Jelena Bin Drai is a purveyor of classic pieces, enough to make you feel like an absolute goddess. Whether it’s a billowy silhouette or a tailored cape, her AW16 collection is as fairytale as it is fine Who is the Jelena Bin Drai woman? The Jelena Bin Drai, woman is elegant and sophisticated. She is smart, educated and stylish and she does not compromise on quality. She wears high quality pieces but affordability is important – she seeks a wardrobe that works for all occasions so she can feel confident in any environment. What is the brand aesthetic? My fashion label is all about great fittings and quality fabrics for a reasonable price. Not only are my designs created to compliment a woman’s body but it also gives them confidence and exposes their inner and outer beauty. All my pieces are always a mixture of international designs with local values combined. Which celebrity do you hope to see you in your collection? I would love to see Kate Middleton and HH Sheikha Moza wearing my pieces. They always look gorgeous and never cease to amaze me by how they pull off anything they wear. What’s your personal sense of style? Comfort and classiness is definitely my personal style. I’m a businesswoman and a mother of three children. So, during the day I wear anything that’s comfortable to wear and at the same time looks professional and elegant. What influenced you for your latest collection? I was inspired by London and the cold, winter season. It has a lot of monochromatic and bold red colours and a variety of pieces like long skirts and gowns, lightweight coats, chic pants and classic overcoats that can be mixed and matched for any time of the day. Which designers do you look up to? Chanel, Dior and Valentino. They have such beautiful pieces that I can never get enough of. Outside The Box

Bold, daring, innovative, fun and different. These are some of the words that naturally come to mind when describing Reemami. We speak with the very humble Reema Al Banna about how she came to putting musical instruments among other quirky objects into her collections

I

t’s always refreshing to see a growing designer maintain their humility when they chat. It’s all too common to speak with the cream of the budding crop and get earfuls of drawn out self-loving rhetoric Better still, it’s always refreshing when a growing designer shows that talent is built upon through taking less than typical routes, in a roundabout way, to the desired destination. It proves you can do whatever you want, whenever it comes to you, without being so linear. Reema Al Banna is the UAE’s answer to the girl next-door phenomenon. She is earthy yet preened, standing at a considerable height with billowy hair and a knowing smile. She hugs you with a tight, longtime girlfriend-like squeeze. Just like her brand, Reema is cool without trying too hard. Expected the unexpected – whether that is an extension socket or an orchestra of musicians playing the violin, this is sophisticated fashion made fun and intriguing. Reemami’s autumn-winter collection has Seventies vibes courtesy of some uber cool bell bottom trousers, majorly flared sleeves on blouses and an air of comfortable volume. Creativity comes in the form of unusual angles, neat slashes of fabric and optimistic colour palettes. Learning that Reema has a graphic design background (Reema later studied at the French Fashion University in Dubai, ESMOD, before launching Reemami in 2009) is when you suddenly have an ‘aha’ moment. She has taken that experimental nature of graphic design and stitched it into her line, giving it its signature identity of being distinct and simply fun. And if there’s any part of the world that takes fashion very seriously and explores sartorial possibilities, it’s our region. “People want something new and fun from regional designers,” explains Reema. But she is also very present in the Parisian market where we recently met her back in March of this year. “There’s a demand for basics, which I have in this collection. Each season I have a new theme, this time it was about sound, rhythm, repetition and music which you can see in the pieces but I also have staple pieces like the work shirt, but reworked in many ways.” Reema’s world is as eclectic as her brand – “big time” she agrees. “My last collection was about foodstagramming and previous to that was about boxing. I am inspired by my surroundings and what is taking the world by storm,” she adds. She is also influenced by surreal art, illustrations and Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto (“he’s so insane, it’s amazing”). How far is she going to push the style envelope though? Is having a fried egg or a trumpet sitting blatantly on a pair of trousers or on a top as far as she will go? “As long as it’s wearable, I’ll do it! Whatever the idea is, it has to be something a woman wants to wear. I’ll constantly experiment with fabrics and cuts. Fashion changes all the time, I want to cater to whatever may not be available in the market. I will hopefully branch out to jewellery and denim within the next couple of years too.” Sold! When we tell her we are so impressed with how innovative and ‘outside the box’ Reemami is, she practically pepper sprays us with gratitude. It’s obvious she won’t rest on her laurels, however much success she commands. And this is what makes Reema and her brand so endearing.

Guerlain’s Main Man Guerlain’s very own perfumer, Thierry Wasser gives Ohlala an inside scoop on his beginnings, inspirations and what drives him to excellence

74

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beauty Insight

You started at such a young age in the botany field, how did that transition into the perfumery industry?

I read an article about fragrance houses in Geneva when I was around 19. I wrote them a little note, and had olfactive tests at Givaudan. After this, it introduced me to the school and this is how it all started. So I arrived in this profession by chance, but starting Givaudan’s Perfumes School made me sure that this will be my way. When starting a new fragrance at Guerlain, what is your method of inspiration? Creating a fragrance is like writing a story and the inspiration fortunately comes from my experiences in life as a trip, an encounter, a discussion … It all starts with a story. I’m telling it with scents instead of words. That’s what comes first in my mind. But each process indeed is very different and there are absolutely no rules. And since I joined Guerlain in 2008, I realised how important the creative job is linked to sourcing and manufacturing; it’s the first step when I create a new fragrance. Travelling the world in search for raw materials, what has been your favourite place to visit for a fragrance? They are all dear to me, but South India is very special to me: For the colours, the smells and the local people. What’s the most challenging perfume you’ve put out and why? I joined Guerlain in June 2008, and I very quickly had to work on a new fragrance; I was so excited, so happy to work for this wonderful brand I dreamed of, that I wanted to tell the whole world of my love and happiness. I wanted to shout out loud how wonderful it was to be there, at Guerlain, with the mission to perpetuate such a proud heritage. This is why I created Idylle, it was my first big challenge.

“Creating a fragrance is like writing a story and the inspiration fortunately comes from my experiences in life as a trip, an encounter, a discussion” And it is made with a bunch of roses, which is my favorite scent. I am also very proud of La Petite Robe Noire as well. How do you personally like your perfumes? I like them to be happy and generous. Describe Guerlain’s perfumery? Rich heritage. Excellence of raw materials. What have been the challenges you’ve encountered at Guerlain and at the helm of perfumery? It was impressive to become the new heir of the Guerlain legacy. For instance, take Jacques Guerlain, the genius who created Shalimar and more than 400 Guerlain fragrances during his life. To be the first perfumer of the House who doesn’t belong to the Guerlain family was an honor and a real challenge at the same time. I see this step as a paramount in my career. It is enormous, it is a dream for me, every day I wake up and tell myself that I am very lucky to work in this wonderful brand. Where do you see the perfumery industry shifting in the next five years? I wish I knew! What can we expect from Guerlain in the region, for the future? I am always listening to what local markets have to say, and so far, our Dubai’s HQ is happy with our portfolio. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beauty Hacks 101

Q: I can’t seem to master a cat-eye liner. Any tips for that?

A: Practice makes perfect. It took me a while to master this technique, and it’s a tough one. But what I found that helped me was the tool used to create the cat-eye flick. Use a black pen with a thick grip to create any desired flick.

Beauty editor, Sofia Graniello, answers your burning beauty questions on how to prep for the upcoming season

Q: Summer is tough, especially in the Middle East. My pretty clothes get sweat stains, making it impossible to remove with time.

A: I hear you! Heat is exhausting, especially when it compromises fashion. To prevent your clothes from getting old dark sweat stains, spray a bit of lemon to your stains before washing them. Works every time. 76

Q: Summer left my skin a bit toasted. My face can’t hold much makeup at the minute. Any tips on how to survive this?

A: Don’t stress your skin out. Forgo foundation and opt for something lightweight. Take on the BB cream route, or perhaps conceal areas of need.

A: Do it with coffee. Seriously. Don’t throw out those old coffee grounds, its natural antioxidants will refresh your face and control that puffy area.

Q: My lips are so dry at the minute; it’s unbearable to even add lip balm. Any beauty hack to get me through this?

A: Look no further than sugar! Mix a bit of sugar and honey, and scrub away those dry lips. Do it once a day, until your lips are nourished and healthy.

New

Beginnings

A new season brings the chance to wipe the slate clean and start afresh when it comes to getting into a better beauty regime. Angela Beitz tells us how Wear SPF daily

Sun protection is so important, especially in the harsh climate of the GCC. Sunscreen should be part of your morning routine as much as brushing your teeth. Foundations that include a SPF over 30+ are perfect to protect your face and often give you a nice glow. Find a good sunscreen that is mositurising and slather it on in the mornings.

Take off your make-up before bed

We’ve all been guilty in the past of this one, but it wreaks havoc on your skin and clogs your pores. It’s so important to give your skin a thorough clean and to spend at least ten minutes a night on a routine that includes cleanser, toner, a good serum and night cream. Even if you are super lazy, try leaving face wipes beside your bed so that you can ensure to take your make-up off or use a Micellar Water cleanser for quick make-up removal. Upon rising, exfoliate your skin and use a deep cleansing mask to remove hidden impurities.

Don’t overuse product

With so many products to choose from these days it can be super overwhelming when choosing the right products. In terms of skincare, it’s always best to get back to basics and use products that work hard

for you. Use a good cleanser that will clean your skin without stripping moisture, a serum that works for your skin type and moisturisers that address your skin’s needs (dryness, anti-ageing, oiliness etc). When it comes to haircare the same rules apply. Use a shampoo and conditioner that are suited to your hair type and a mask to be used twice a week.

Clean your make-up brushes

Unwashed make-up brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause nasty breakouts on your skin. It seems like such a simple thing but finding the time to clean your brushes can be hard. Clean brushes are also much more precise when applying product and you don’t want to mix your beautiful beige eyeshadow with your dark black shimmery eyeshadow.

Ease up on the gel-manicures

We all love a gel-mani for their no chip staying power and glossy shine but they are terrible for your nails due to the UV lights and the acetone removers. Give your nails a break by getting a standard manicure or if you are very brave leave them polish free for a few weeks. Use a nourishing cuticle oil daily and taking Hair, Skin and Nail vitamins will really give you stronger nails and you’ll notice a big difference. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Authentic Revivals With a menu filled with new additions, we sample some incredibly tasty (and rather creative) dishes at our favourite Adliya spot, Cafe Amsterdam

S

at in the overtly twee, chic and sun filled conservatory section of Cafe Amsterdam, we are back at this perfect-for-socialising venue, which we think has reached a new status of being one of Bahrain’s classic restaurants, even if it’s only been around a few years - that’s how much of a hit this place is. We settle in our comfy patio style chairs and peruse the menu, looking out for the new items. Before coming we had a chat with Chef Carlos on the phone, “Don’t eat breakfast,” he warns us. Noted. We come with empty bellies and full hearts, ready to revel in endless servings of fantastic fare. To begin with, a string of quinoa encrusted croquetas oozing with lush parmesan cheese that are a great starter filler for anyone with pangs of hunger! Our super suave server of Spanish descent no less, guided us through the new items on the menu, with full power passion and excitable gestures to match, who was so keen to emphasise the nutritious qualities of each dish - and how much he loved them. We then proceed with a thick potato and lentil soup with a gorgeous swirl of cream on top and a tasteful serving of smoked salmon draped into the soup. It has a very full, complete taste and is quite powdery too. This makes for a suitable winter meal, especially as the temperature drops post September. Another dish to complement a duvet-type day is the Guiness Gnocchi. This dish is creamy, stodgy and rather addictive. We can’t stop diving into even

though we know we should reign it in because we have so many other dishes to try! For a lighter nibble, we have the multi-tiered tuna ceviche that comes with a rainbow of vegetables stacked above and below the perfectly dark pink tuna. The garnishing atop the dome arrangement add a fun flair to the presentation. This dish is as fresh as they come and we can’t handle just how zingy it is. Anyone who likes to combine health with a bit of protein should look to ordering the chicken salad. The chicken is super soft to bite into and is surrounded by a forest of greens with smatterings of chilli for an extra kick alongside some refreshing pomegranates to take the heat off. Now if like us, you take to burgers like a moth to a flame, you’ll love the Black Angus Chorizo burger adorned with a fried egg and shavings of truffle on top served with crunchy chips placed on a sturdy wooden board. It might be awkward to bite into (we can’t negotiate a suitable entry point at first!) but you simply won’t care what you look like as this is the most epic creation ever. Dessert comes in the form of an innovative yogurt cappuccino with an edible shortbread tray of macaroons. It isn’t overly sweet (courtesy of the welcomed sourness of the yoghurt) but is a light note to finish on. Equally too are the three sorbets which are given an arabic twist: rose, pistachio and red berries, all bursting with authenticity and realness. For more information or reservations call: 1700 7404

Culinary Insight

Feel The FURN When was the last time you came across a restaurant that served up good-quality Khaleeji cuisine on the island? We tucked into Furn Bistro & Bakery at The Westin Bahrain City Centre and enjoyed some fabulous fare In a place like Bahrain where a new restaurant

with another new concept pops up every other week, it’s getting increasingly challenging to bring something fresh to the food scene, but we may have found something that ticks all the boxes. Enter Furn Bistro & Bakery at The Westin Bahrain City Centre; a huge contemporary venue filled with comfortable seating, chic and earthy interiors, and modern touches. Furn gets two other crucial things right: the food and the service. Creative Khaleeji cuisine, infused with the heart and soul of the region, is prepared by passionate chefs and brought to your table. The menu is both familiar yet different, with dishes like mezza starters, machboos, madrooba, mixed grill, seafood and traditional Arabic dessert all making an appearance. What helps them to stand out is the use of innovative cooking methods and artistic presentation. Plus, every dish has a story; from the mezza tale, to the grills, the strudel and even the karak, Furn will feed you interesting facts alongside tasty food. Our favourite dish on the menu: Prawn Fie Qataath, is locally caught prawns baked in mutabbaq style pastry with coriander, mint labneh and zesty lemon - an incredibly hearty dish. Not only is it delicious, it’s interactive too. The chef will come out and show you how the pastry pot is flipped over to reveal the fresh ingredients inside. The hummus duo, the muhammara, and the smoked moutabel were all talking points at the table. Especially the Furn hummus which is blended with sundried tomato, roasted paprika and balsamic vinegar. With that said, it was the Bistro Tabouleh that had us all whipping out our phones to take pictures. This was just one of the few dishes that came with the liquid nitrogen fog. As we are ones to dive into desserts, the gloriously stretchy Kunafa doused in rose and orange blossom syrup is to die for as is the Arabic Ice Cream, flavoured with saffron and rosewater (and presented using the theatrical liquid nitrogen). These desserts are thrilling and absolutely delectable. Furn offers Khaleeji cuisine like we’ve never seen (or tried) before. Its continental twist on classics is like a breath of fresh air in Bahrain’s swarming culinary landscape. For more information or reservations call: 1717 4441 94

Diva Drives

Porsche Cayenne S I

The Porsche Cayenne S Redefines the SUV so we did what we do best and took it for a proper diva spin

t is difficult to conceive how improvements can be made to a vehicle as luxurious and efficient as the Porsche Cayenne. However, their in-house motor gurus have somehow managed to level up once again, taking the next generation to new heights in both appearance and performance. Fuel consumption and engine performance are both typical considerations for SUV consumers. Porsche have carefully considered these points and ensure their new offerings boast improved fuel consumption as well as upgraded engine performance. The Cayenne S has an entirely new 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine fully developed by Porsche. When taking in the exterior design of these models, it is clear the appearance has been sharpened. No matter which angle this SUV is 98

approached from, the Cayenne’s precise lines have been artistically designed to grace it with a sleeker demeanour, whilst adding to its powerful presence. Features including all lights, license plate, boot handle, exhaust tailpipes and many additional modifications have all been reworked to add to the quality that is the Porsche Cayenne

look. An automatic boot lid is now standard to all models. The interior, far from being neglected when it comes to upgrades, has evolved with the driver in mind. Included is a new multifunction sport steering wheel complete with shift paddles. This too will now be standard for all models. But what about efficiency? Porsche has committed to supplying vehicles which offer maximum performance without requiring massive fuel consumption. Despite the power and torque of these magnificent steel beasts having been enhanced, fuel economy has improved, this is due to the coasting function, the further advanced “auto stop-start function plus” and optimised thermal management. The use of cooling flaps are now being used for the first time in the Cayenne.

The Cayenne S The new Porsche-developed 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine of the Cayenne S returns fuel consumption between 9.5 and 9.8 l/100 km, according to the NEDC. The biturbo V6 delivers a maximum power of 420 hp at 6,000 rpm. The car’s torque of 550 Newton metres (+50 Newton metres) is available from 1,350 to 4,500 rpm. The power density per litre of displacement is now 117 hp. With its standard eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds (5.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package) The vehicle’s top speed is 259 km/h. To begin with, I have a very hands-on approach that inherently enables me to get involved personally as well as oversee every aspect of our workings and the fact that we are a small team consisting of just two members permits us to efficiently and promptly fulfill our responsibilities. Effective communication plays an integral role in our ability to functionally coordinate as well. Another important aspect of our exponential success is the systematic and proactive management of our Social Media channels. We strive to constantly engage with our customers by actively being receptive and responsive to their feedback to the quality of our services and products. Thereby, over time, this process has enabled us to master the art of anticipating our customers’ needs and exceeding them in each of our endeavours.

Where do you feel Jaguar Land Rover Bahrain sits within the MENA as a pillar of excellence in marketing? Just as we are led by example, through both the benchmark setting standards of Jaguar Land Rover Limited and the leadership qualities and guiding principles of our senior management, we try to be a positive force that inspires a pioneering and thoroughly reliable customer oriented, personalized approach, which automatically positions as leaders amongst our peers. It is a very challenging market we ply our trade in as we directly compete against the enormous organizational structures of the dealerships in the K.S.A. and the U.A.E., as they consist of much bigger teams, but we thrive under the pressure of such prominent competition as it drives us further to stand out in terms of the excellence we emanate. What are the main skills that the Bahrain marketing team have that has allowed the country to win for the third year in a row? It goes without saying that to achieve such success and be proficient in one’s duties, it is essential to have a huge passion for the brands and the products - and through our wholesome understanding of the prestigious nature of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands that we stand for, we have grown to automatically instill in ourselves an insatiable affinity for the marques and the excellence they represent. Another pivotal cog in our ability to consistently perform at the highest levels is our capacity to think outside the box and innovate new ways of reaching out to our customers, keeping them utmost satisfied with our services. It is also vital to set trends, rather than follow them, so as to constantly consolidate our position as leader in the regional market. What is the marketing strategy at Jaguar Land Rover Bahrain that allows it to successfully rival the likes of KSA and the UAE as an example? Our core strategy is to be completely transparent and customer-oriented in all our products and services, allowing our customers to embark on a journey with us, which starts from the moment they enquire about a car right up to when they trade it for another one of our cars. We have also intensified on our digital output; I am personally very digitally oriented and strive to constantly stay on top of our social media channels. So we continually

interact with our followers by providing the latest news, offers and updates on our products be it on Snapchat, Facebook or Instagram, through our four pronged Social Media Philosophy, ‘Listen, Reach, Engage and Deliver’. This highlights to our customers our inviting nature and adds another element to our appealing essence, by showing them that we are technologically proficient as well and therefore, easy to do business with on all fronts. From just admirers to full out enthusiasts, we want to educate our followers on how great our vehicles are. And the key to achieving this engagement with our customers beyond social media is to offer experiential opportunities. To indulge in the benefits of this approach, we recently launched the Land Rover Experience Centre Bahrain (LRE), the first of its kind in the region, located at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), to give our customers a complete, sensory experience.

To be able to effectively service our clients to their utmost satisfaction, we have to start consolidating our belief in that vision from within the team itself. Since our clientele are our main focus and we strive to provide an ownership experience that is brilliantly integrated right from their sales to after sales experiences, we need to comprehensively establish working as well as amiable relationships amongst our team members themselves and our customers as well.

“We strive to be passionate about what we do and exceed our customers’ expectations”

Do you have a team mantra that you implement on a day-to-day basis? On a daily basis, we strive to be passionate about what we do and exceed our customers’ expectations as well as our own. We achieve this by not being complacent in our accomplishments; rather constantly challenging ourselves with every new venture. How important is it to build relationships with both members of the team and clients and why?

What would you like to see change in the marketing of Jaguar Land Rover Bahrain. Do you have any projects or plans in the pipeline? We have a dependable marketing system in place that, as aforementioned, has led us to all our successes over the years and this strategy is based on prevailing market conditions. As market conditions constantly fluctuate, we continually adapt to the situation at hand in order to consistently remain at the top of our game and permanently consolidate our position in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Also, in terms of challenging ourselves and exceeding expectations, we will continue to evolve by constantly innovating and, in the process, revolutionize our industry. I would like to continue to get closer to our customers by creating events and other interactive experiences on a consistent basis, which would serve to emphasize to them that at Euro Motors Jaguar Land Rover, we adopt a ‘Make Me Feel Special’ Approach to ensure that our clientele are regarded to be of the highest priority. www.ohlala-magazine.com 101

Hotel Talk Frank Normann Eikeland, the General Manager of The Domain Hotel & Spa tells us about his hospitality beginnings, the challenges of his current post and future plans in the pipeline

I am from the capital of the Norwegian Fjords, Bergen, an old Hansatic Port City surrounded by seven huge mountains, which makes it the city of umbrellas. My first job was as a bellboy at my uncle’s hotel in my home town. I was absolutely part of that hotel’s DNA from day one, and as of that time my plan was to continue educating myself within hospitality. My next move was joining the number one hotel in the city, and did my ground work in the kitchen and restaurant before I entered the Hotel Management School and came back as my previous trainer’s boss. The Domain Hotel & Spa just turned three years in operation on August 8. The hotel and all of its design was mostly done by Bahraini companies and workers. The hotel was raised during the tough times in Bahrain, and the owner, Faisal Matrook was crystal clear in his decision to make sure all work on the hotel was made and done in Bahrain, to support the city and country during challenging times. We have introduced “classics @the Domain”, classic old movies shown in Domain Privé at 36. Floor, where a maximum of 30 people can enjoy old classics with Bahrain at your feet, enjoying private butler services while enjoying the movie. Year on year the Domain Hotel & Spa has grown occupancy and ultimately revenue from our many restaurant outlets and Spa memberships. We are taking more or less our fair market share of the market, and are aiming for more with the good help and focus from a targeted sales and marketing Staff. After three years we see we have a good grip on the leisure market, driven with the good help from KSA, and our corporate segment is steadily growing too. The Domain is inspired by the very best ingredients and our master chefs are utterly dedicated to their art. In the past The Domain has won numerous awards both locally and globally. Including best Japanese Restaurant- Imari, Best Lounge- Txoko, Best SteakhouseLe Sauvage, Best High Tea and Highly Commended European Restaurant- Le Domain. With the expected opening of another two great Hotel Brands opening Q4 this year, we are proud to announce that we signed up an agreement with Preferred Hotels and Resort. With this agreement we enter a global alliance of more than 600 luxury hotels around the world. Preferred Hotels and resort have a strong grip on Sales & Marketing and distribution, which will benefit the Domain Hotel & Spa significantly in the future. For our present and future guests it means also that you enter the “I Prefer” loyalty program, meaning you can accumulate bonus point at all our restaurants, spa or checking into any of our suits and rooms, and you can redeem these point either with us or at any of the Preferred Hotels or resorts worldwide on your next vacation or weekend travel. 102 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Gym Phobia

Like our columnist, a self-confessed gym hater, perhaps you too can overcome your fear of exercise classes and start to enjoy working out

I hate the gym. I don’t like exercising for the sake of it unless I’m window shopping. Team sports are bearable as I get distracted in the moment and therefore don’t notice that I’m taking exercise. But my advancing years, combined with my more sedentary lifestyle in Bahrain and having a baby, made me realise I needed to take a more proactive approach to fitness. First, I joined a cross fit class. I was convinced I would hate every moment of it. How could flipping tyres, running around the block and doing burpees be anything other than excruciating, especially in temperatures above 38 degrees? To my astonishment, it was almost fun. The exercises were well planned and function whether you are a beginner (like me) or a veteran. It is sociable and the sessions pass quickly. I enjoyed the challenge and to my utter surprise I discovered I was a relatively good runner; I haven’t run since I was forced to race 1500m and 3000m at school purely because I had long legs. At the end of the month (5 classes per week) I felt fitter, stronger and healthier than I had ever been since my pre-University years. I even signed up for a second month already. Over the summer, I started Body Combat too. I have a vehement dislike for exercise classes. Primarily because I find 114 www.ohlala-magazine.com

them boring and I am hilariously uncoordinated, but also because everyone else seems to know what they are doing. I think my fear of exercise classes stems from enforced aerobics classes in a freezing gym hall in my school days. Yet I actually enjoy Body Combat. It involves 55 minutes of choreographed martial arts movements to some intense beats and the time passes quickly. I’ve also discovered the joy of cycling, albeit sedately. I’ve acquired a baby seat for my bargain bike and my toddler loves it. She frequently puts her cycle helmet and shoes on, goes to the front door and shouts “out, out”. But aside from now being able to fit into my pre-Bahrain clothes, I also have an excuse to go shopping for gym clothes. Victoria Secret has fantastic sports bras and leggings. And high street stores, such as H&M, do a good range of bright tops. My three key tips for enjoying working out: (1) find a fun friend to do it with, (2) switch classes or sports until you find something that motivates you, and (3) invest in some hot workout gear. If after reading this the idea of working out still fills you with dread, get out your Häagen-Dazs, reach for the remote, and watch back-to-back series on Netflix until the weather improves.
