Edi t o r ’ s Letter
I
was flying to Athens a few years ago when I saw my first (very wiry) grey hair under the unforgiving lavatory light. I didn’t dare to pluck it out despite my dumbfounded disbelief. I was always told that a mignon would follow. How first world of me, you say. A few years on and with many more grey hairs (in my premature twenties no less!) I’ve reached a point of not caring anymore – partly because it “just happens” as everyone tells me and partly because they haven’t quite Weill reached surface level yet but Family fashion house let’s not tempt fate too much. For this issue we look at age in many forms. From modeling at an older, less prescriptive age to the oldest family fashion house in Paris to the essential pieces for age-appropriate dressing (no need to be rigid here) we’ve got a selection of features for you to explore the notion of how age can be flipped to mean what 28

you want it to mean with the right attitude. All too often we find ourselves scared of it. Age brings wisdom, intelligence, Iris Apfel experience and beauty and it’s time we start warming to these ideas more. Take note of our favourite nonagenarian wild child, Iris Apfel. This icon has a lived a life totally unhindered by convention. We also tap into perhaps a more discreet but slowly burgeoning scene in Doha: Al Safwa farm. Organic is a buzzword that has stuck around for a while now and Olfa Guetata speaks to us about the Caroline Labouchere importance of healthy choices and how the farm is going from strength to strength. As usual of course, we’ve been out on the tiles and can safely say (with pages to prove it) that Doha is a super hot place to be right now.

First Word
As I write yet another First Word, I’ve just realised how quick 2016 is going by. Where did January, February and March go? All of them vanished into thin air. But having April upon us and with many activities and exhibitions on the horizon, as you read this letter, I’m immersed into spring and sipping green tea under a sakura - cherry blossom trees. Yes, I’m currently venturing on a solo trip in Japan and enjoying Tokyo’s vibrant life. For once, please feel jealous of me. Hoping my flights get cancelled on my return to Doha and its unbearable heat, I’ve still nonetheless enjoyed great and successful openings of eclectic venues in the city this past month. Illusion, being one of them, was an absolute treat with a magnificent view of the city from its Grand Terrace, and its enchanting VIP room was just as spectacular. But for beautiful brides-tobe, IWED is happening this month to lower your bridezillameter with useful tips on event planning, makeup, and finding the perfect gown. I also had challenge this month that completely finished me: Anytime Fitness Qatar. A grueling journey of 3-hours, where I thought I was close to death, but it did manage to defeat my fear over gyms. Whatever your plans are for April, enjoy another issue of Ohlala.

The Italian Renaissance was an inspired time in history. While the cultural world was at a great precipice of change, everything else also bloomed. Bulgari has launched a new High Jewellrey collection: Italian Gardens made up of 100 unique pieces inspired by the art of the garden during the Renaissance. This curved and three-dimensional necklace in white gold and brilliant pear cut diamonds, speaks to water chains. You can just see the lapping and ripples of water flow in this exquisite masterpiece, aptly named: Magical Reflections.

Feast Your Eyes As far as rings go, the Ya Noor El Ain by Robert Wan and Nadine Kanso is a true one of a kind statement piece. The signature Bil Arabi Arabic letters are scattered to spell Ya Noor El Ain, which translates to ‘Light of the Eye’. Ya Noor El Ain portrays a romantic and exotic message and merges the timelessness and history of pearls with the poetry and grace of the Middle East. Its feminine 18-carat rose gold is enhanced by the smoothness of a captivating rare black Tahitian pearl and encircled by dazzling blue sapphires and diamond baguettes.

How To Look Fabulous… …at any age Age dressing always gets a bad rap. But we’re here to show and tell you that it’s all a myth. Just because the runways are awash with young bloomers (this is thankfully changing, especially where ad campaigns are concerned, yes that’s you, Céline) doesn’t mean you can’t be trend-conscious as you mature. Take your style cues from our must-have RTW pieces and accessories and remember that you can still be grey and gorgeous

thought, ‘I want to go back!’ I’m one of those people who will worry about things that I’ve done or said. As Mimi and I walked off the runway, hand-in-hand, I kind of lost balance with my shoes and backstage Mimi said, ‘You were pushing me over, mum!’ and I apologised profusely! Fighting the ageing process takes a lot of upkeep. I run everyday and that’s become more competitive [when we first got in touch with Caroline she had just completed a half marathon in Ras al- Khaimah, one of the seven Emirates] because I really need an aim to get myself out there everyday. Instagram can shatter your self-esteem. Mimi can feel a sense of competition on social media which can have negative impacts. But I do think it’s a great social tool that gives you more options. I’ll be browsing and I’ll just come across something like a post showing eyeliner on the inside of your upper lid. It’s very interesting what you find. I’m not obsessed with healthy eating but I still eat lots of vegetables. I tend to cook low carb meals. I try to eat naughty things only at the weekend. But I always exercise. Jane Fonda. Oh my goodness me. Her face and body are amazing. I don’t care what she’s had done, I would do it. I love Diane Keaton to bits. She has the most amazing style. Every time I see her in a photo I think, “I would love to try that!” Another inspiration for me as for as age goes is my husband. He’s 53 years old and he’s an iron man. He has qualified for the World Championships in Hawaii four times and he’s a managing/partner at Optimal Fitness gym. I’m definitely pro-plastic surgery. But I’m still hoping there’s going to be a pill one day! My granny is 96 this year and she’s still up and down, moving around and fingers crossed I’ll be around for a while but I don’t want to be sitting in an old people’s home.
Beauty has always been the preserve of the youth, but we are embracing a welcomed change of air. Caroline Labouchere proves that beauty knows no bounds and it’s something to celebrate. We chat with Caroline about her chance encounter with modeling and her daughter, Mimi who we feel is her mother in the making
we first noticed an unknown Caroline Labouchere. It was at Taller Marmo’s AW15 show during Dubai Fashion Forward. It’s not everyday you see a model sporting natural silver hair, but that’s what got people scribing away on social media – Caroline stepped onto the runway to a legion of gawking onlookers who were blown away by her chic beauty – the kind of beauty that often gets sidelined and dismissed in favour of the 20 year old equivalent – we drew a comparison to the ever lasting beauty of Carolina Herrera. There’s something to be said about a middle-aged woman coming to the fore in the readyto-wear world because it’s simply something that you don’t see. Caroline Labouchere has broken the mold by default. How does getting cherry picked out of a crowd sound to aspiring models? The stuff of dreams, we’re sure. Waiting for Kylie Minogue to perform at last year’s Dubai Gold Cup, Caroline was approached by a rather excited Italian man (a photograher for Taller Marmo) who proclaimed: “You’re so beautiful! I have to photograph you!” To which Caroline, a portrait artist by nature, said: “Ah well this is my daughter, Mimi, she’s the model.” After a to and fro of deliberations, a phone number was exchanged and the following week both mother and daughter were in the studio together – a first time for Caroline. That dynamic was then taken to the runway for the Taller Marmo show where the two did their separate bits and then walked on for the finale hand-in-hand. Putting her experiences and musings on beauty forward, Caroline shares her words… I think people are looking more attractive now. I am more attractive now than I was. I don’t really wear makeup, and I don’t know why that is. I find that men have always become more attractive with age. I was shaking like a leaf before going out onto the runway. Once I got out there though, it was just so exhilarating. After I did my bit I

How did you get into modelling? Was it something that seemed carved out long ago or was it as spontaneous as your mum’s chance opportunity? I got scouted in a shopping mall, I’d never really thought about it before! It was very spontaneous but I was young and from the first photo shoot it just rolled on.

Tell us a little about the moment your mum got spotted? What was that like? It was quite funny, mum gave the guy my number instead of hers! She was totally caught off guard, we both thought the photographer was a little strange but he ended up calling me a couple of days later and meant everything he’d said! What has your mum taught you about beauty? Less is more.
like Mother like daughter Mimi Labouchere
Do you aspire to be like her when you’re older? Yes but also she’s always encouraged me to be my own person, I see her flaws as well as her perfections but I find her flaws beautiful. I can learn from her as we are so close, she has helped me be the woman I am today. What’s the best advice you’ve been given about modelling and/or beauty? You’re always going to be told no or that you’re not good enough once in a while, but you have to pick yourself up and try again every time. What’s your personal sense of style? Skinny black jeans, white T-shirt and a cool pair of trainers are my go-to. Do you feel certain pressures now that you’re in the industry for the long-run? Not really, I just want to be my best and hope that there’s a space in the market for me to grow and establish a presence in the industry.
What does beauty mean to you? I think beauty is in everyone and everything. It’s definitely conceptual. Women, as they mature in age, grow more confident with time and feel more at ease in their own skin and beauty. As a young woman are you quite impressionable? I am quite impressionable and have things about myself that I see as ugly or unattractive that others don’t seem to notice. I’m always going to have things that I’m going to want to change about myself.

status in the apparel. “The aesthetic has of course changed with time over the decades, we always adapt ourselves to the trends. But the DNA has always been about the amazing fabrics, Parisian style. We embody the Parisian woman, this idea has always been present from the beginning.” The Weill woman loves detail, takes care of herself and has this attitude of Parisian flair. When asked about the age group of the Weill woman, we imagine that it’s strictly for 40 years plus but on the contrary “we cannot think in terms of

A woman of 60 wants to look young and modern and a woman of 20 may want a more chic look so we think in terms of timeless style with a twist of luxury and even humour to give flavour to the brand and that’s what the customers love about it.” There’s something more subtle, less showy and understated about Weill – despite its history – but that gives it exclusivity. Perhaps it’s the fact that the brand has always been in the hands of family and not an outsider where it could have gone on a tangential path and strayed from the core value of the

In 1924 the Weill family set up Whether it’s a splendidly restored chic boutique or their first shop in a building which serves today as their Headquarters, an avant-garde concept store, Paris has always been where we are speaking to Elie Weill at the forefront of the fashion world. The capital’s (in its recently refurbished form) style roots have stood the test of time; and so has in touching distance to the SacréCœur. It was a symbolic moment – a the family oriented brand, Weill. We talk to Elie moment where relentless dedication Weill, the head of international sales, about the and family spirit allowed for success oldest family fashion house in Paris to continually unfold. It started off as a manufacturing site, “we were producing for the specialty shops, it wasn’t a brand – it was for places like Bonne Marche,” says Elie. The war years brought on some complications but after a boom happened for Weill. “My grandfather flew to America to see what was going on there and discovered a new concept that hadn’t existed in Europe which was ready-to-wear. It’s not about creating a buzz, it’s about giving the good products and good image to our customers.” With its longevity, the brand can get away with not being a sell-out – Weill speaks for itself. “That’s why people like Weill because they know that we offer an honest image.” Being a family lead brand, the dynamics of upholding tradition is different from any other long-standing brand. “It’s a very natural process. We breathe and live for Weill. We live and work together. We share the same values and goals. I can close my eyes and trust that everything will be alright. That’s a fantastic advantage for us and it’s something very rare.” The brand’s logo itself denotes the strong family ties between the generations: “we have a very strong and fond connection to horses and it also shows Parisian elegance too with the calèche (carriage)” There’s something of a love story between Weill and the Middle East. “Even when Weill was a more French oriented brand we already had many customers in the Middle East, especially in Lebanon – it was one of our first countries www.ohlala-magazine.com

We have developed a lot in the Middle East.” Going through the Weill headquarters it strikes us that the building houses classic fashion but the structure itself is very modern with floor-to-ceiling windows and panels – with almost Nordic interior design. “Even though Weill is about timeless fashion, we are in the 21st century and we are moving with that.” The most precious room for us was Elie’s grandfather’s office with all the family photographs through the years placed around his desk and window ledge like any proud grandfather would do. The cosyness and warmth emanating from the room where all the brand’s history sits is quite emotional and beautiful. It is in this room where you truly get how wonderful Weill is.

An Everyman He could be your trusty next door neighbour, he could be the idiosyncratic guy you sat next to on a train once or he could be the person you go to for colourful life stories. Paul Smith is everything you hope for in someone who has catapulted into fashion fame: warm, unfazed and sage. Editor in Chief, Georgie Bradley has a good old-fashioned sit down with the man behind the eponymous brand

“
ow do I call him Sir Paul, or is just Paul fine?” I ask gingerly, almost embarrassed at my judicious want to get it right. “No, no, please, just Paul!” I’m told with aching relief. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t watched a few interviews Paul has given which have ended up on YouTube – I find him to be a convivial, open man (this is pre interview, mind you) who wouldn’t misconstrue a question with attack just because he can. Despite receiving his knighthood (Command of the British Empire) in 1994 for his services to the British fashion industry, I get the sense that this ‘one-of-the-people’ man is at odds with the glitterati and gossipy nature of the industry, but not in an overtly frustrated way, but more in a humble, accepting manner of the hubris that exists throughout but where his amiability remains in tact. As I wait around the Paul Smith studio in Paris’ 3rd arrondissement it strikes me that his collections are very sophisticated as the mannequins stand strong in a riot of colour and tailored prestige. Personal memorabilia hang around the elegant, high ceiling space, including slightly sepia tinted photos of Paul and Pauline (his wife and muse) that date back a few decades. I hear him closing up the conversation with an American blogger who precedes me in another grand, floodlit room; he sounds generous in tone and proffers many thanks and gives her a hug. The first thing you need to know about Paul Smith and the legacy that surrounds him is that it all stems from cycling. Not a readily obvious connection to fashion. But the former gave way to the latter in the form of a blessing in disguise. “I received a bicycle for my birthday when I was 12 from my parents and then I got into racing and my dream was to do that for a living. I had a crash when I was 17, broke lots of bones and ended up in hospital for three months. When I came out of hospital, a couple of the lads I had met there kept in touch and one of them chose to meet in a pub in my hometown of Nottingham which was where the art students went. I got to know other people at the pub too, architecture, fine art and photography students and I eventually helped one of them open up a little clothes shop - doing the windows, running things - I was only 18. Eventually I met Pauline who became my girlfriend and then wife and that was the main turning point because she studied fashion at the Royal College of Art during those heady days when David Hockney was there. It was interesting because at that time they taught you how to make couture - how to actually make clothes. It’s not just about design anymore, it’s about marketing yourself. In the evenings Pauline used to show me how to cut a pattern, how to make a shirt. I went to a night school for tailoring, it was all very artisan, very real and that’s why we have such an important suit and tailoring business for both men and women now,” he says. It later became a story of Paul and Pauline, grafting together to produce the brand that it’s become today with many ideas and so much energy between them. Paul’s spontaneity is palpable – his style alone confirms this. He’s wearing blue pinstripe trousers and a jacket with a denim shirt on the inside, and then neon coloured trainers, like a happy accident, much like his first foray into fashion. One day Pauline had said, “well why don’t you open up a little shop of your

Focus
own? You’ve got so many ideas and so much energy” and with all but around £600 Paul eventually found a three by three metre shop in Nottingham. Most of the clothes that were in the shop at the time were made by Pauline. “But I just knew that I couldn’t earn a living from that because it was too particular, especially for a provincial town.” With that Paul proved his design mettle and began freelancing as a designer, working as a stylist, building himself from the ground up. The little shop soon procured big recognition. “People from Leicester and beyond found out that we had things you couldn’t find anywhere else,” he recalls. The shop’s “different, odd, unusual” status is what Paul claims is the reason for his being where he is today. It just caught on in the right way. The preeminent brand today is a mix of classic tailoring with punchy cuts for both men and women. Historically, the British suit is lauded the world over – men look to Paul Smith for style notes on heritage and tradition and perhaps with that comes an unavoidable ‘stiff upper lip’ notion too. But Paul has revolutionised what could have been stuffy dressing into dynamic and vivid pieces that still pay homage to the British gentry. The women’s wear is equally modern and chic with unexpected pops and playful meshes. This puts into question the disparity between High Fashion and ReadyTo-Wear. Paul Smith is famously wearable and down-to-earth, like the man himself. “We do two fashion shows in London every year and two in Paris as well, so from that point of view it’s considered runway fashion, some of our shops are next to PRADA and the likes. We also sell in 73 countries. But I think my background has played a part too, even with this posh collection around us, there’s the sweater that will go with 20 different bottoms, there’s trousers that go with 20 different tops.” The brand is incredibly democratic too, there’s no ‘branding’ as such. So it’s not a show-offs calling. “I like people to like the clothes because they like the clothes not because it’s from a particular brand. Branding is a symbol of ‘I’m wealthy and I’m fashionable’ whereas I just like people. I don’t only like wealthy people, or people from a certain country. I’m very happy to sell to an 80 year old, a student or a rock star.” Having left school at 15 and had a business up and running by the time he was in his early twenties, Paul’s got grit - but soft grit. He asks me, as we draw to a close, what my schedule has been like during Fashion Week. I tell him the usual deadline, sleep deprivation story. “Well don’t have a nervous breakdown, it’s not worth it darling. Life’s too short,” he says. “You live it well, don’t you?” I say, and he quietly nods with a small smile.

Time for tea
Jo Malone London have always been the purveyors of understated elegance. The unexpected notes and blends of luxury scents have always made for the perfect treat. With yet another innovative collection on the scene, we caught up with Celine Roux, the Fragrance Director at Jo Malone London, to talk about the Rare Teas collection
C
eline Roux has quite the enviable job. As Fragrance Director, Celine leads the Jo Malone London Creative Studio and fragrance development. She works daily with some of the world’s most renowned Master Perfumers, exchanging ideas and inspiration right through from conceptualising to finalising the brand’s newest scents. Always curious, Celine combines creativity with extensive technical knowledge to develop scents which embody the Jo Malone London signature; each one is modern, elegantly simple and often has a touch of the unexpected. The brand’s latest collection, Rare Teas is made up of six exquisite rare teas and for the first time the brand has infused the tea straight from the leaf into the refined fragrances. Tell us about the rate teas collection? Rare teas are all about craftsmanship, purity, provenance and ritual. These very characteristics drove us in the creation of this collection. All tea comes from the same plant, the Camelia sinensis. In a similar way to wine, the soil, climate, altitude and harvest are what make each individual tea so different. We were amazed by the diversity created with just one ingredient. Unlike mass-produced teas, rare teas are grown in small quantities, picked by hand and harvested using traditional, time honoured methods. There is meticulous preparation that goes into brewing each cup to develop the product. What inspired the collection? We focused on this precision and preciousness, spotlighting the hero ingredient, the tea itself. The fragrances were finely worked to frame the rare tea, adding ingredients to bring out its most unusual

and elegant facets. In Oolong Tea, for example, we wanted to emphasize a smooth creaminess. We did this by adding powdery cocoa and almond. Similarly, in Jade Leaf Tea, we used sesame and mate leaf to push the tea’s naturally green and crunchy notes. In each Rare Teas fragrance, the tea itself is skillfully spotlighted while other ingredients are carefully chosen to accentuate the most stunning nuances. How did you get into the perfume industry? I used to create make up for Estée Lauder and Dior which was amazing and then I moved to London and got the opportunity to work with Jo Malone London. I grew up in the south of France so I’ve always been surrounded by fragrance. My grandfather imported flowers and spices into Grasse, the world’s centre of perfumery so it feels like fragrance is in my blood. What traits do you need to survive in the beauty industry? You need to be true to the brand and try not to be steered by trends or other products that are doing well. You need tenacity also as sometimes it takes ages to develop a product and you need to scratch it and start again but you must persevere. You need to be able to be creative as when you have no boundaries, great things can happen. What is your must have Jo Malone London product? I adore the Jo Malone London Geranium & Walnut scrub, it took me two years to develop this product and I’m really proud of it. It’s got the freshness of geranium which is perfect to have in the shower and walnut is lovely for exfoliation. Living in London, I draw constant inspiration from the city; the smallest detail can unlock a story and prompt a new fragrance journey.

Beauty Talk A Range for Greatness
“A myriad of great products to protect our skin from unwanted sun damage is definitely out there. Shiseido’s latest sunscreen, Wet Force, is a range you’ll want to hang onto. Wet Force is the world’s first sun care with innovative and proprietary technology. After it comes into contact with sweat or water, the layer of sunscreen on the skin becomes more evenly spread to give a better UV protection.” Soha Diab, Regional Training Manager for Shiseido Middle East.
Ingredients to Look Out For Make sure you tick all these ingredients off when buying your daily sunscreen: Titanium dioxide, Octyl methoxycinnimate, Avobenzone, and Zinc oxide. If you have sensitive skin, check with your dermatologist first.
Ready, Set, Sunscreen-Away!
You may not be able to defy gravity, but you can sure fight it. Learn the benefits of using sunscreen in your daily routine to keep things looking up and healthy
Reduce Your Wrinkles
“Applying sunscreen daily is key to maintaining radiant and youthful looking skin. Regular sunscreen application is extremely important in your skin care routine as it protects your skin from sun damage, which can result in the development of fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration and textural changes in your skin.” Soha Diab
Lower Skin Cancer
Wearing sunscreen on a daily basis protects our skin from harmful UV rays, that later may cause severe damage. “Using sunscreen on a daily basis could even lower your long-term risk of skin cancer.” Soha Diab. 82
www.ohlala-magazine.com
How to Apply
If you wear makeup, make sure to apply your sunscreen before your moisturiser and everything else. Keep in mind that you must apply it 30 minutes prior to sun contact for the full-effect. Make sure you incorporate it in your daily morning routine for better results.
Prevent Sunburns
Remember we are in the Middle East. Just because you don’t burn often, doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen. Sunburn is an immediate reaction, but sun damage occurs with time. Sunburns weaken the skin causing redness, hives, itching, swelling and even peeling. Use an SPF of 15, or higher.

Q. I’m a firm believer of ‘less is more.’ I want a quick beauty fix for my busy mornings, but still want to look great.
A. Morning routines differ for everyone! If you are a go-to gal, then look no further than Lancaster’s new 365 Sun Compact. It’s a lightweight formula for anyone who wishes to give the skin a bronzed look with a radiant twist. This game-changing product also offers protection from UV exposure all day long. Quick, right?
Q&A
Beauty editor Sofia Graniello highlights the importance of healthy skin and how to get rid of unflattering dark spots. Plus she gives some important age-appropriate tips
Q. Everyone is going crazy over serums. What’s the big deal? A. Serums have been around for quite some time now. Having tested quite a few, I have to say, they are a big deal if you purchase wisely. Serums are no more than just a high concentration of active ingredients. They contain the most potent dose of anti-ageing ingredients – antioxidants, peptides, skin brighteners and other goodies – but they do come at a price. The consistency is thick and a little goes a long way – I’d say, give it a go!
Q. I’m in my mid 30s with terrible brown spots. Any tips on how to remove these unattractive spots and achieve a radiant skin?
A. Hyper-pigmentation is common at all ages. Some are due to acne, others due to pregnancy, and with age, brown spots emerge. The beauty market offers a myriad of skin correctors and skin brighteners. Guerlain’s White Pearl would be my all time favourite at-home skin enhancer, leaving the skin smooth and recovers normal pigmentation. Apply when needed 3 times a week, before bed. 84

Q. I’ve noticed I can’t apply as much foundation as I used to. Being in my late 50s, I can’t get away with so much makeup. How can I look fabulous and still get away with a bit of foundation?
A. For mature skin use as little foundation as possible - even settle for a BB Cream. Look for products that will enhance your glow instead of masking it. Go for fluid and sheer foundations and stick to cream blushes.

THE Fountain of youth
In a youth obsessed world full of photoshop and Instagram filters, Angela Beitz reveals the struggle with ageing
H
undreds of emails pop into my inbox on a daily basis, but some instill a sense of panic in me. Emails inviting me to try the latest cosmetic surgery fads or skin peels really scare me. It’s not because I am against these procedures but it reminds me that I am getting older and that things such as deep wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots will soon become something that I will need to deal with. There is such a huge pressure these days to look younger or a certain way. We live at a time where we are bombarded with images of perfect looking models without a pore on their face and we are exposed to loads of unrealistic photoshopped images and perfect Instagram filters (of which I am guilty of using), so it’s not really a big surprise that we feel that we need to conform. Over my years, my beauty regime has gone from picking the perfect Bonne Bell Lipsmacker (I thought this was the height of sophistication when I was 12) to a much higher maintenance regime that includes of a cupboard full of anti-ageing serums and more. I’d be lying if I said that ageing doesn’t worry me (which is totally counterproductive as I’m sure the worry ends up as lines on my forehead.) For a start, gravity is certainly not our friend when it comes to ageing. As we lose collagen and elasticity, 86
www.ohlala-magazine.com
our skin starts to loosen and I find the worst place that this happens is our neck. Prevention is better than cure but if you’ve already done damage to this area then try an anti-ageing neck cream and be sure to treat your neck and décolletage the same way you treat your face (your face stops at your chest people.) It’s so important to look after this area as it really gives away your age or even worse, can make you look older if not properly cared for. Other things you can do to help the ageing process are wearing sunscreen, exercising, getting enough sleep and generally looking after yourself. This is all easier said than done in a world where everyone is so busy but I do agree these help not just the ageing process but your sanity. But what is the best thing you can do? Embrace it. It’s important to not be hard on ourselves, especially as the ageing process is inevitable anyway. It’s important to look after yourself of course, but it’s also liberating to be true to yourself and to not get caught up in looking perfect and being “flaw-free”. After all, they are called laughter lines for a reason. Wrinkles represent every emotion we have experienced throughout our lives. Take a page out of Helen Mirren’s book. “I’m a woman that loves make-up and getting dressed up. As I get older, I don’t look as good, but I don’t give a damn.”

A Memorable Escape In search of a truly relaxing getaway, Angela Beitz checks into The Chedi Muscat to find a beautiful haven inspired by serene minimalism and style

Travel Escapes If you are looking for the most relaxing place in the GCC, then I think I’ve found it for you. Set with the majestic Al Hajar mountains in the background, The Chedi is a breathtaking property with the most perfectly landscaped garden oasis we have ever set eyes on. The Chedi offers 158 guestrooms and villas, all of which draw their influence from Omani culture and heritage. Upon entering the hotel after having been picked up in a slick Mercedes at Muscat’s airport, a peaceful and calm feeling washes over me and suddenly it feels like I am miles away from busy deadlines and daily stress. The gorgeous lobby is vast and is designed as an Arabian tent with a Majilis feel. Huge, comfy couches and vibrant cushions in orange and red tones compliment the low hanging lights and already the hotel has impressed us. I’m greeted by the front of house manager who is super pleasant and I’m given a cold, refreshing towel and ginger tea as we go over the formalities. We are ushered through the water gardens and shown to our suite that is a sleek and spacious haven. The suite also boasts a large terrace and mine just happens to be overlooking The Chedi pool and the beach. I can already see myself spending most of my time on the terrace reading. The property is designed with a symmetrical feel (all palm trees and large garden pots are in straight rows) and everywhere you look you can also see four colours. White (the buildings and paths), brown (décor) green (grass and trees) and blue (sky and water). It’s quite amazing how this clever design makes you feel relaxed. The king size bed is one of the most comfortable hotel beds I’ve ever slept in and I’m certain the calming ambiance of the room provides me with the best quality of sleep I’ve had in a long time. The huge bathroom has his-and-her sinks, an indulgent terrazzo bath tub, a large rain shower and delicious products from Acqua Di Parma. If you are looking for added extras then you’ll be happy to know that if you stay in one of The Chedi Suites, it enables you to enjoy a whole heap of decadent extras. Since we aren’t ones to shy away from decadence here at Ohlala we’re happy to find out that that our mini-bar is complimentary and topped up daily, fresh fruit is offered in our room and perhaps the cherry on top is being able to use the Chedi Club Lounge which enables guests to have afternoon tea and cocktails daily in the lounge. Other extras are return airport transfers, laundry, breakfast at The Restaurant and free Wi-Fi. This is totally worth it and it really makes you feel like a VIP guest. After I’ve settled into the room, I head back to the lobby to try The Restaurant which boasts breakfast, lunch and dinner. Inside it’s very formal with dark interiors and glittering chandeliers and outside it continues with the relaxing and serene vibe of the rest of the hotel with a beautiful courtyard overlooking the grounds. I order a beetroot and goat cheese salad to start which comes stacked in a jenga-like formation 90

and it’s utterly delicious. I then order a tuna loin with edamame beans and it’s perfectly cooked an equally delicious. It’s then back to the room for quick night-cap before bed. The next day its back to The Restaurant for a sumptuous breakfast. The incredible spread consists of everything from fresh fruit and yoghurt to a full English breakfast to meats and cheeses and eggs made to order. It’s incredibly relaxing enjoying this lovely meal in the outdoor courtyard and you can easily while away a few hours here. I then head to the long pool with a good book and some magazines in tow. The long pool is the longest of its kind in Muscat at 103 metres. The pool is surrounded by huge lounge beds and the attentive staff bring cold towels and constantly top you up with chilled lemon and mint water. Amazing. There are two other pools at the property (The Chedi Pool and the The Serai Pool). Both The Long pool and The Chedi pool are adult only while The Serai Pool is kid friendly and has The Serai Pool Cabana where you can order yummy snacks and drinks. I spend most of the day lounging by the The Long Pool before I have to tear myself away to head to my spa treatment. Life at The Chedi is tough, what can we say. The Chedi Spa is large and again continues the theme of pure relaxation. The menu focuses on Balinese Therapies, Indian Ayurveda and indigenous rituals which are available in all 13 treatment rooms. I opt for the Balinese Massage after it being recommended to me to relieve my back and neck from kinks and tension. The treatment room is one of the largest I’ve seen and blends Omani architecture with calming Asian interiors. After a lovely foot scrub and massage which is done expertly while I sip Hibiscus tea with cinnamon my therapist gets to work on our sore and aching body and we leave feeling recharged and relaxed. The property also has a large Health Club and an impressive tennis court shall you want to keep active on your stay. After our very chilled day I feel it’s best to book a table for dinner. The Beach Restaurant has recently won two awards in Muscat (Best Restaurant and Best Ambiance) so I’m excited to check it out. The décor and ambiance doesn’t disappoint and the restaurant is set along the 370 metre private beach. The menu is mainly made up of tempting seafood options and the staff are excellent. The Beach Restaurant boasts a seriously impressive wine list that can be explained to you by their sommelier. We order the seafood linguine which arrives perfectly cooked with large pieces of delicious lobster, prawns and squid mixed with lots of buttery garlic and punchy chilli. It’s the perfect venue to soak up the breeze and enjoy your meal overlooking the beach. A trip to The Chedi is sure to impress you and with easy access from other GCC countries it’s well worth a visit. We are sure that your stress will melt away and you’ll be well looked after. www.ohlala-magazine.com

An Organic Lifestyle Al Safwa farm is abuzz with leading organic products. Olfa Guetata sheds light on the history of this leading farm
P
arisian native Olfa Guetata is not new in the culinary industry, having worked for many years in hospitality, Olfa had more to offer from her expertise in the field. But it was in 2013 when she decided to take a risk and move to Qatar to start a journey that would change her life. Pairing up with Al Safwa’s very own, Nasser Al Kawari, both started an adventure in expanding the farm’s organic products and creating awareness for healthier choices. “In 2014 I paired up with Nasser and started to follow his farm that him and his family owned,” recalls Guetata. Al Safwa farm was first established in 1965 that was owned – and still is – by the Al Kawari family. But soon the farm, which served for personal purposes, went from conventional to better and into organic with Al Kawari’s vision. The farm is not only Doha’s leading farm, but the only farm, which offers organic and pesticide-free products. “75% of the farm is organic, and the other 25% is pesticide-free,” adds Guetata. But turning a farm from conventional to organic is not an easy ride. Guetata explains how the family took the risk in 2000 and transitioned into organic farming practices. Following rigorous requirements for a successful title was a stepping-stone for Al Safwa farm, which in late 2013, it all became a success. The farm obtained its organic farming certification with international standards. “Al Safwa is the first farm to be certified in Doha,” adds Guetata happily. But how important is it for a farm to be certified? “It is extremely important to show the people it is possible to have an organic farm in a desert. One that is a farm, but organic and pesticide-free at the same time,” says the French connoisseur. Being a fully certified farm and operating with all requirements, challenges are unavoidable. “The weather in Doha. It gets dusty!” adds Olfa. But for those who wonder what organic really means, Guetata weighs in: “Organic is composed of many things. For instance, the soil has to rest, make rotation of your agriculture every year. For example, if you plant a tomato, next season you must rotate it with another product. Everything needs to be natural, strictly forbidden in using icing or cooling techniques. The farm also has to be far from industrial, or polluted areas. Also to keep in mind, the water must be clean, and have its own independent water source.” But organic is not only measured by the cleanliness and strict rules one must follow for a successful harvest, but also, understand its process. “A tomato for example, it takes double the amount of time to nurture and produce.” Al Safwa farm wants the people of Doha to taste top quality organic products at a reasonable price. “That was one of the main goals at the beginning,” adds Guetata. The products are collected everyday at 5am and end up at the supermarket by 9am. Take a step into a more organic lifestyle and make room for healthier choices. 96

Health Files Ageing
gracefully
It’s no secret that all women thrive to look great at any age. Our resident contributor, Esmeralda van der Westhuizen, Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s Spa Manager is offering her thoughts on how to cheat gravity True beauty isn’t about looking like a supermodel or a twenty-
something Barbie doll. True beauty is about accepting and feeling good about who you are. Here’s how to take care of yourself and drum up youthboosting confidence no matter how many candles are on your birthday cake.
Skip the fancy skincare
Cut through the anti-ageing aisle and focus on three products. If you use a sunscreen, retinoid, and moisturiser starting from age 20, your skin will look much younger compared to someone who didn’t use them. Applying SPF every morningisamust, alongwithkeepingcellsplumpandhydratedwithmoisturiser. Retinoids are where the magic happens. Dermatologists consistently recommend them because the vitamin A derivative essentially teaches your skin to act young again, stimulating the collagen that prevents fine lines.
Stop obsessing
If you have wrinkles, brown spots, and under eye bags, you’re probably tempted to slap on a thick coat of foundation and powder all over your face. Makeup can’t completely cover ageing. More is not more. Translation: don’t ‘cake’ it on, but rather build it by layering. Start off with a blurring primer to disguise the signs of discoloration and hyperpigmentation. Top it off with a liquid foundation (it doesn’t settle into lines like heavier cream formulations, which is best for mature skin), dust your T-zone with translucent powder, and finish with a cream blush for a youthful, healthy glow.
Take care of your hands
Your face and hands are two body parts that get the most sun. But since you’re busy slathering on moisturisers and anti-ageing products on your face, your complexion may look young while your hands betray that with brown spots and wrinkles. The same exact products you use for your face can go on your hands. So when you use a retinoid at night, rub a small amount to the backs of your hands. After putting on a good SPF moisturiser in the morning, do the same for your hands.
Live in the present
We waste too much energy feeling bad that we don’t look like we used to instead of appreciating what we look like now. A lot of women struggle to get out of a style rut and they run the risk of looking like they’re stuck in a time warp. In this case, it’s not really about your choice but the message it sends to the world—and yourself about your age. We recommend finding a new style that works for your life today. See, looking good is healthy.
Get enough zzzz
It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing. Poor quality sleep not only 102 www.ohlala-magazine.com
increases the visible signs of ageing around your face (thanks, wrinkles), but also makes you feel less attractive. Plus, compared to those who got less than five hours of sleep, women who clocked seven to nine hours had skin that also bounced back better from UV light exposure. This means sleep helps your skin naturally ward off the damaging effects of the sun, slowing down the aging process.
Go with the flow
There is something incredibly beautiful about a woman with lines on her face. Lines are proof that we’ve lived life. We get them when we laugh and when we express ourselves. Take them all away and you end up looking like a plastic-faced mannequin. Women who age gracefully have something big in common: confidence.
Take charge of yourself
Focus on being healthy, strong and fit. Commit to making smart food choices and exercising regularly. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and the only one you can see. Anything that’s good for your body is good for your skin. Whatever you love doing— running, spinning, or lifting—keep on doing it.

Have Fun & Get Fit I’m not a gym girl, I never have been.
104 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Queenax is a multifunctional training frame, which efficiently turns space into an interactive tool for everyone. The ceiling, floor and walls became new partners for my training, and it is estimated to burn 500 calories per class. Not bad I’d say. Not only was my class interactive and varied, but also Aivz was encouraging along moments of struggle. With top quality techniques, workout machines, and the latest technology, my Queenax was fun and exciting enough to work out muscles I didn’t even know existed. Having completed that task, I later joined their energetic class, Kangoo Dance; an explosive and highly motivating class that challenged my whole body with its aerobic program, the perfect stress reliever, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. In addition, the Kangoo Jumps rebound shoes are also available at the gym. Overall, having tried their gym, equipment and class, I was truly impressed by what this multifunctional gym has to offer. Offering a list of exciting classes such as Disq, Zumba, Kickboxing, Core Balance and much more – Anytime Fitness is definitely equipped for any exercising mood. So what are you waiting for? Have fun and get fit!
Sofia Graniello takes on a grueling afternoon at Anytime Fitness Qatar, only to find out how effective and life-changing this place can be
Being classically trained as a ballet dancer and having represented my country for track & field, the gym is a place I’ve never really understood. But Anytime Fitness is causing a stir among fitness lovers and me being intrigued, I wanted to check what this place has to offer. As I made way for a three-hour gym afternoon with my personal trainer, Aivz Centeno, we started off with a fitness exam. My initial skepticism over what this exam would entail was put at bay as it was nothing more than a straightforward evaluation of my weight, mass and fat. Disappointed with my current weight, I was glad I was in good hands to help change my fitness style and turn fat into muscle by working arduously. Excited to begin my journey, Aivz proceeded into testing my fitness limits. We started off with cardio, then some squats and finally balance, as she explained every step of the way answering all of my concerns. Aivz, being a professional trainer and having extensive knowledge in the field explains how crucial it is to have an insight of the trainee’s limits and fortes, so as to build a plan for a successful workout without damaging any muscles. After what seemed to be a grueling hour of sheer sweat while guzzling two bottles of water, Aivz began mapping out my needs to create a strong fitness plan. It turned out, Queenax was my best bet. Considered to be a modern collection, but full of historic charm, H&M is hitting home as they launch their collection to coincide the opening of Fashion Forward, 300 years of Fashion at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The collection exudes elegance, sophistication and uniqueness as the H&M team delved into the museum’s collections of archival fashions for stellar results. We find fluid and easy silhouettes in languid dresses, arty kaftans and sculpted skirts. And yet, prints add a je ne sais quoi feel with their l’oeil paintings and sculptures. In addition, we find organic silk, hemp, recycled linen as well as innovative materials such as beads and rhinestones made from recycled glass and Denimite. Be part of the exhibition by wearing one of the brand’s #HMConsciousExclusive available at Villaggio Mall from April 7. The collection will feature clothing and accessories for ladies only.

Despont. Buyers and collectors were also able to discover stellar creations from their Red Carpet, Temptations, and L’Heure du Diamant collections. Diva Drives
The Biggest Beemer No, it’s notthe X5. It’sthe German automaker’s longest, most spacious and luxuriousvehicle, the BMW 750Li. Divatakes a driveto see how manageablethis luxury barge actually is…
A
t first glance, the BMW 750Li can seem a little daunting. As the showroom delivered it to us in an underground car park and I took in this hugely luxurious limousine’s significant proportions, I wondered if I’d be able to make it out of the tortuous car park unscathed. Within just a few minutes of driving it, all fears were dispelled. This is a car that makes you feel instantly comfortable, and not just because of the plush, air-conditioned leather seats. It’s abundantly clear how much attention to detail BMW have spent in making this car eminently driveable. It’s the way that everything is within easy reach, from the gear shifter to the infotainment controls that 116 www.ohlala-magazine.com
are right under your hand when you’re sitting normally. It’s the way that the driver interface is easy to navigate, and the centre console on the dashboard is angled towards the driver, putting it all within reach and giving a lovely ‘cockpit’ feel to the driver’s seat. It is also the driving experience itself. Despite its immense size, the BMW 750Li feels as light as a feather, and just as agile, thanks to lightweight materials used in the chassis. The steering is hugely responsive, and there is massive power from the 4.4l twin-turbo V8, making the 750i feel much smaller and lighter than it actually is. And the attention to detail given to the driving experience is just as impressive, with an
impressive raft of driver assistance and safety features. I’m always a fan of adaptive cruise control, but with the 7 Series, you also have lane departure intervention, which gently steers back into the lane if it senses you accidentally drifting across the line without indicating. It almost (ALMOST!) drives itself ! The 360 degree adaptive parking camera system is also one of the most sophisticated we’ve ever seen. For example, if it senses you getting a bit too close to a particular spot, the camera angle changes to give you a better view of that portion of the car. It also clearly indicates exactly which areas are close and which less so. It’s extremely impressive, and allows for confident and stress-free parking in
any situation. However, it’s not just the driver that enjoys a journey in this car. This particular model is designed as an executive limousine after all, and as a result things are just as spectacular for the rear passengers as they are for the driver. With an extended wheelbase offering enough legroom to really stretch out, comfort is added by adjustable reclining seats, twin DVD screens, and the [ITALS] pièce de résistance, the detachable Samsung Galaxy tablet in the centre armrest that controls many of the car’s functions, such as the entertainment, climate controls and so on. Is this a family car? Truth be told, not this particular model, being designed as a limousine. While the Samsung Galaxy tablet and the twin DVD screens would undoubtedly keep kids entertained on long journeys, and the ample room and comfort might even allow them to sleep, the many controls and functions available to rear passengers allow far too much scope for mischief ! That is not, however, to say that the BMW 7 Series itself is not a good family car. Large, spacious, comfortable, with plenty of storage, and EXTREMELY safe, in many ways it’s the perfect family car. They might want to buy a variant that doesn’t allow the kids in the back to control the settings on the grown up’s seat in the front, however… www.ohlala-magazine.com 117
Art Corner
A step into the future Prominent artists joined curators, art collectors and museum directors for the second annual edition of The New York Times ‘Art for Tomorrow’ conference in Doha Marina Abramovic
Elena Syraka Debuts NOUR With a strong and clear future on the horizon, Qatar is excelling by the minute. Having had The New York Times ‘Art for Tomorrow’ conference held in the country, Qatar continues to dominate the regional art scene. Organised under the patronage of Qatar Museums and Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the conference supported Qatar Museums to successfully connect cultures, encourage exchange and support emerging talent. The conference titled: “Technology, Creativity and The City” took place at W Doha Hotel & Residences in a fourday program that brought exceptional and renowned artists from around the globe to explore the complexities between the digital world and the creative process. Points of discussion were the nature of creativity, its impact on developing cities and nations and what is required into making a city ‘creative.’ The New York Times ‘Art for Tomorrow’ conference was also a platform to exchange and interact on knowledgeable insights in how to shape Qatar’s culture scene and art. Plus, the country’s growing maturity in its creative community and being a major progressive hub for art was also a focus point. The diverse group of speakers were numerous, including cultural and artistic pioneers such as: Marina Abramović, artist; Jeff Koons, artist; Dakis Joannou, collector; Marc Spiegler, global director of Art Basel and many others that took center stage to discuss Qatar’s arts future. In addition to an innovative conference, there was also room for exploration at the prominent hotel’s Art Lab on level 29; a vibrant venue with pop-up art installations from exceptional artists such as Pia MYrvoLD, Aaron Cohen, Omar Khalifa, Laurence Winram, Google Art Institute, His Royal Highness Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark and many others. It was four days immersed in culture, art, and creativity in an effort to catapult Qatar into a bright future ahead. 118 www.ohlala-magazine.com
With a true passion for jewellery making, Greek artist and gemologist, Elena Syraka, has been creating unique art pieces for the past 15 years. Now having exhibited her latest collection, NOUR at Katara Cultural Village we sat down with her to discover more What’s been your journey to jewellery? I studied fashion at university and after winning a first prize in textiles and prints, I went on to do a diploma from Esmod-Paris. I was fascinated by the quality of precious metals and stones and capturing raw beauty. Why have you chosen Qatar to exhibit your pieces? Qatar is a cultural hub in the Middle East and has an enviable collection of Islamic art in the Museum of Islamic Art. I have toured with the NOUR collection, which is based on the Islamic artifacts from the Benaki Museum in Athens. After very successful tours in the museums of Athens, Cairo, Alexandria and New York, I was invited to bring it to Doha, to Katara Cultural Village under the auspices of the Embassy of Hellenic Republic. Tell us the creative process behind NOUR? I wanted to take a traditional route but also interpret the designs in a more contemporary way. I took inspiration from the wood and marble pieces, the motifs on the ceramics and tiles and translated them into more minimal forms that would still be true to the originals. It was a process of respect.

I don’t know which one is warmer: The North Pole, or an English guy? Before you judge me, hear me out…
Where I come from – which is far away from Doha – English men are desired, we put them on a pedestal to say the least. Something like a rare breed even. We dream to have those blue-eyed, golden haired, tall men as our partners. Their dreamy accents for some bizarre reason, intrigues a Latina woman. After engaging in an– epic fail – relationship with a Tottenham Hotspur fan, I’ve boiled it down to some components on why we crave an English man (among them is how respectful they seem to be in public.) I’m over him), I’ve come to the realisation that English guys are… dull. Let’s put it this way: They lack passion. “Baby,” “I love you,” or “I miss you” is pretty darn hard to get. WhatsApp convos are pretty to the point, dull, and boring. Where did the excitement go? Do they know the term: anticipation? I’m not sure. Everything is straightforward, black or white, yes or no. Have they ever experienced mystery? I’m not quite sure about that either. To be honest I’m putting my English-dating-days to rest. But before I part ways with this rant on English men, I salute all women who have truly maintained a successful relationship with them. And if you’re wondering how it all went down with the Liverpool guy, I’ll fill you in one day. Miss Ohlala is a total drama queen and she is proud of it. And she is not quitting on English guys… just yet.
