here are few women who don’t have a make-up bag bulging with products. From that old faithful mascara you’ve sworn by from the time you first started wearing make-up to that snap purchase that’s now sitting in dust because it’s a few shades out. – “I’ll need it one day” I tell myself – don’t we all? Beauty is something we indulge in; perhaps an uncomfortable truth for some, but cosmetics have a transformative power. A sharp rouge lipstick can make you walk in stronger strides, eye shadow can bring out your playfulness and a serum can kick some confidence back into you - the human face is a fascinating canvas. So, welcome to our beauty issue! Prepare for a product heavy set of beauty pages, but we know you love it. Our comprehensive guide has you covered from getting that soft glow to eating the right kinds of food (some myth busting here) to the team’s saving graces that see us through: clear some space in your bathroom. Elsewhere in the issue we give you an inbetween-season wardrobe refresher, a look into Marina Qureshi’s (based in London and Dubai) latest romantic collection while also heading to the Serengeti in a dreamy journey of wild terrains, safaris and hotel luxury. 20

When it comes to my own beauty fixes, I’m a serial scent searcher – if it’s got a mannish, herby top note, it’s mine. Admittedly I’m in and out of malls so it’s hard to abate the addiction. With so many retailers enthusiastically perched outside department stores spraying the latest perfumes, I’ve almost reached a point where I need some on-the-go coffee beans in my bag! I’m faintly shy to admit that Chance Chanel is still my favourite. It seems too obvious. It’s like saying your favourite film is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But sometimes the best are seen this way because they simply are. And let’s be honest here, the best way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.

First Word
Once upon a time I lived in east Asia. And once upon a time my prince charming was east Asian. What is it about the Japanese culture that is so enticing to foreigners? Is it that their traditions are so far removed from ours they seem refreshing and diverse? Or perhaps it’s the cuisine that intrigues? I for instance, having visited Osaka and Kyoto for the first time not too long ago, can safely claim Japan is a gem worth visiting. Every month as I sit down and go over my monthly experiences as a local editor, Nozomi has got to take the prize this month. The Japanese restaurant is absolutely exquisite – I’d even go as far as saying it’s got an aphrodisiac quality to it. For those who are yet to discover Nozomi, you’re welcome. I’ve done the dirty (in this case delicious) job of reviewing this hotspot for you. It surpassed all of my expectations, leaving me completely wowed. That’s no easy feat. Enjoy another great issue of Ohlala!

Luxe in flux
Carla Mallari is a fashion graduate making it big in the region. Known for her famous blog, Nomad Street Style, the quirky gal is breaking into the Berlin scene with her pop-up store and her luxe collection, Cala Mari. We sat down with the designer to talk beauty, Berlin, Bali and Beyoncé
I
f you’ve been around D-town for quite sometime, then you’ve probably heard of Carla, or perhaps her famous blog, Nomad Street Style – a pioneer in the blogging scene even when bloggers where not even a thing. Finishing her studies at Qatar’s Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011 as a fashion designer, the fashion lover was up for the challenge for something new, and it’s there where she realised creating and designing was her thing. “It was part of our university course to create a collection and after I graduated, I kinda wanted to continue with that momentum of designing. It wasn’t something I wanted to profit out of it, I was jobless and I was bored.” As time progressed, she later became a full-time stylist and costume designer, but soon things got a bit dull. “ I had a regular job where things got a bit repetitive and projects were the same thing. I got bored of it, up until a friend of mine went up to me and noticed what was going on. I looked tired!” Tired and wanting to shake up her future, she then decided to give herself a little
project that would change over the course of time. “ I designed a clutch, it was just for me, I did not intend to mass-produce it. So I took a picture and decided to post it on Instagram and my followers started to contact me for orders. To cut to the chase, Cala Mari is now a registered brand in Berlin.” The designer, alongside her partner, presented their collection in Berlin’s Fashion Week this past month. But what makes Cala Mari so special? The designer weighs in on what her brand is and why it’s so unique. “Cala Mari is one of a kind. It’s a maximum of 15 pieces for each collection. I’m actually travelling to Bali to find inspiration for my next collection.” But one of Carla’s best selling points is personalising her clients’ clutches. Carla is banking on making it bigger and better in Berlin where she plans to study Strategic Design as a Masters. “ I don’t plan to stay here for long. It makes sense to move to Berlin since our brand is trying to break Berlin’s market. I love the city.” At 26-years-old, Carla has proven herself by breaking into two markets at the same time with her designs. Oneof-a-kind? We think so too.
“So I took a picture and decided to post it on Instagram and my followers started to contact me for orders. To cut to the chase, Cala Mari is now a registered brand in Berlin”
Finish the sentence confident with whom I am.

I have a real penchant for petal coloured blush and this one from Mr. Ford is at the top of my list. It’s a clever ombre effect, which sweeps onto your cheeks to give a beautiful, even glow. For gals who want wider and bigger eyes take note. Apply a gold hint on the outer part of your eye and add a silver hue to the inner corner. Finish it off with an olive tone eye pencil and smudge it on your lower lash line.
Although metallic hues can be quite intimidating, we love this one. Apply a soft brown hue all over your lid and lower lash line. Pack a bit of silver hue to the outer and inner part of the eye. Go big on your eyebrows.

Cut Down Dairy Products
Dairy is the number one factor for acne and unhealthy skin. You love milk? Opt for almond or soymilk instead. Still not happy? Eat yogurt, the fermentation may reduce hormones that trigger and cause unbalanced skin.
Avoid Processed Meals
A juicy hamburger is great, and perhaps a hot dog as well – but these are not the healthiest meat choices. When buying meat, opt for organic and free-range, and for better results cook at home.
Salmon, mackerel, sardines, arctic char, and albacore tuna are all high on Omega-3, which reduces inflammation in many different ways.

Fitness First
In a special guest column, Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s Spa Manager, Esmerelda van der Westhuizen gives her expert fitness insight
F
eel younger, live longer. It’s no slogan — these are actual benefits of regular exercise. People with high levels of physical fitness have lower medical risks from a variety of causes, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Physical Fitness What The Benefits of Exercise Mean for You
There’s more good news; research also shows that exercise enhances sleep, prevents weight gain, and reduces the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even depression. One study found that when breast cancer survivors engaged in exercise, there were marked improvements in physical activity, strength, maintaining weight, and social well-being Physical activity doesn’t have to be strenuous to produce results. Even moderate exercise five to six times a week can lead to lasting health benefits. When incorporating more physical activity into your life, remember three simple guidelines: • Exercise at moderate intensity for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes spread over the course of each week. • Avoid periods of inactivity; some exercise at any level of intensity is better than none. • At least twice a week, supplement aerobic exercise (cardio) with weightbearing activities that strengthen all major muscle groups.
Physical Fitness Making Exercise a Habit
The number one reason most people say they don’t exercise is lack of time. If you find it difficult to fit extended periods of exercise into your schedule, keep in mind that short bouts of physical activity in 10-minute segments will nonetheless help you achieve health benefits. Set realistic goals and take small steps to fit more movement into your daily life, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to the grocery store instead of driving. The key is to start gradually and be prepared. Have your shoes and music ready so you don’t have any excuses. 76
www.ohlala-magazine.com
To help you stick with your new exercise habit, vary your routine, like swimming one day and walking the next. Get out and start a soccer game with your kids. Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, have a plan B — use an exercise bike in your home or consider joining a health club. The trick is to get to the point where you look at exercise like brushing your teeth and getting enough sleep — as essential to your well-being. Remember that physical fitness is attainable. Even with small changes, you can reap big rewards that will pay off for years to come! Esmerelda van der Westhuizen, Spa Manager, Spa by Clarins at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl - Doha

Q&A Protection base coat, Sephora
Beauty Editor Sofia Graniello answers your burning beauty issues with some top tips and secrets
Q. Every time I apply red nail polish or dark hues, my nails tend to get yellow. How can I prevent that?
A. Nail polish is actually quite lethal for your nails. If you wear nail polish on a regular basis, apply all sorts of vitamins. But for the yellow dilemma, apply a base coat before applying any colour to your nails. In addition, always let your nails breathe. Too many chemicals will only weaken them.
Q. My hair looks terribly dull and I don’t want to spend on expensive restoring hair products. Help? A. Why spend when you can go au naturale? Avocado, rich in proteins and vitamins, will add volume to your hair and give it luminosity. Smash an avocado with a bit of olive oil and let the mask sit on your hair for a couple of minutes.
Q. I’m an “on-the-go” girl with no time to hit the gym. What can I do to get rid of my belly? A. Detox water comes in handy in these situations. Prepare your detox water every night and leave it to sit in the fridge until next morning. Get creative with flavours! Prepare yours with lemon, cucumber, strawberries, mint and even watermelon.

Q. I love wearing dark lipsticks, but after 30 mins the colour is all over the place! It’s embarrassing and it looks messy…
A. It’s called bleeding (not literally of course). Always when applying a dark tone, or even pinks or reds, make sure to first apply a lip liner. Match your liner with your lipstick, or go bolder with a darker liner and softer lipstick. You decide!
Q. There are so many makeup brushes out there, it gets a bit overwhelming at times. What brush can I use for the perfect smoky eye? A. If brushes are not your thing, look no further than your beauty cabinet. Take a cotton bud to smoke your eyeliner or eyeshadow and smudge away. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Culinary Insight
Nozomi
The Japanese restaurant makes its mark in Doha and we’re all over it
It comes as no surprise that the renowned award winning contemporary Japanese lifestyle restaurant and celebrity hotspot, Nozomi, is already a smash hit in the city. Twenty-four hours after our visit to Nozomi, we were still salivating over the sashimi. And the sushi. And the Kobe beef. Nozomi, acclaimed as one of the top restaurants in London is going from strength to strength. Now, the ornate and regal Marsa Malaz Kempinski at The Pearl welcomes this Japanese empire infused with European subtleties. Restaurateur and creator Marios George has built up his reputation for delivering a true dining experience with a great atmosphere that makes Nozomi so grand. Decisions, decisions; to enjoy upstairs, or downstairs – that is the question. The beautiful and ornate venue holds 228 seats for the dining area downstairs. If dining al fresco is perhaps your take for the night, an outdoor patio is available with a breathtaking view of the majestic hotel, as well as the sea. But that’s not all: upstairs is the place to be if you’re craving some bubbly with a score of smooth lounge music. We hit it off in the lounge area with great beats and a room busy with well-dressed people. But what makes this restaurant, that has received so much praise, so great? We tried an array of dishes, and we simply cannot fault the following. For starters we recommend (we are positive you will certainly enjoy this one), Unagi and Friosgras with fig reduction and fried potato flakes. Perhaps at first glance you might not be sold but once it melts in your mouth, there is no turning back. A delicious bite with multiple flavours and textures, it’s best experienced in one go. For a heavier bite and for the novelty of it, you have to try the Kobe Rib Eye with wafu sauce. It’s worth noting that all the dishes are share-ready – presented perfectly to split between two. And yet, another great seafood option, the Black Cod, takes the prize. It’s a 48-hour miso marinade with an exquisite citric taste. For sashimi lovers, we couldn’t say no to Nozomi’s smoking sashimi with Chutoro, Otoro and Sake fillets. 78
www.ohlala-magazine.com
We’re still recovering from that one! From presentation through to taste, each dish was impressive in its own right. The staff, as expected, were professional and kind. However, a dining experience is not complete without a grand finale dessert. The Dessert Boat with their exquisite and health conscious choices was outstanding. And enormous. Nozomi is all you would hope for from an authentic Japanese restaurant. For all epicureans, this is the spot. Tuesday nights are now offering a happy hour from 5-10pm. Drinks start from QR 30 and bar snacks from QR 25. Nozomi is open for dinner from Tuesday-Sunday from 6.30pm until 11 pm. For reservations call: 4035 5089 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva Drives
The Infiniti Q70 We experienced an adrenaline-fuelledtaste ofthe luxurious Infiniti Q70 atthe Dubai Autodrome just priortothe Abu Dhabi GP in November lastyear, completewith hot laps driven by F1 racing legends…
A
s a Diva Driver, I love Formula One, not just because of the loud engines, the celebrity spotting, and the awesome parties – I love it because opportunities like this invariably pop up around the event. The Q70 is one of the most recent launches in the Infiniti range, replacing the much-loved M Sedan, which was the flagship luxury sedan in the Infiniti range before the rebadging of the line-up. It is undoubtedly a handsome devil, with bold, aggressive front styling, flowing lines and muscular wheel arches all lending a sense of graceful power. Inside, a warm cosiness and comfort is created by the smooth lines and materials of the 84
www.ohlala-magazine.com
dashboard, door panels and even seat cushions. There’s rarely an angle in sight, and wood trim finishes off the organic vibe nicely. The seats are big and comfortable, and there is ample room both front and rear for up to five adults. However, Infiniti have always been as much about performance as they have about style and luxury, which is why they’ve held fast to their muscular 330hp 3.7l V6 engines (and the mighty 416hp 5.6l V6 in the ‘S’ sports models), which have delicious amounts of power and torque. In November, we were invited to experience the new Q70 at an event attended by Scottish racing legend-turned-pundit David Coulthard, and current Russian Red Bull racing driver Daniil Kvyat. However, not content to just
pitch up, the two drivers climbed behind the wheel themselves to give us hot laps around the Autodrome’s Oval circuit with lots of tyresmoky, sideways action. I was lucky enough to ride with Coulthard, and as I climbed in, he said something completely random to me (exactly what escapes my memory). I turned to him, confused. “Sorry, what was that?” I asked. He turned to me, shook his head, and pointed to the iPhone wedged between his helmet and his ear. The guy was on a conference call!!! Wide eyed, I buckled in, and gripped on to whatever my hands found, as David slammed it into drive and roared off onto the circuit,
casually throwing the car into hundred foot power slides at 80km/h while he nonchalantly discussed broadcasting schedules and general F1 banter with whoever was on the other end of the line. A lesser journo might have screamed. I just let out the occasional squeak through clenched teeth… Thoroughly enlightened as to the muscle of the car, we were next invited to a series of exercises to experience the performance for ourselves. Over a series of circuit laps and autocross courses, we experience the smooth and luxurious ride comfort, and the impressive amounts of grip afforded by the doublewishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. Alas, the experience was over all too quickly, and though I left with a highly positive impression of the Q70, I’ll leave my detailed opinions until I’ve had a much more thorough drive in it. Despite my incessant requests for photo stops, most travellers – a journey truly unlike any other and one that has we soon reached the lodge seemingly without warning – it seems served to capture the hearts and imaginations of the many who have to rise out of nature itself. best guides in the business and I was pleasantly surprised to find myself the sole observer of most of our wildlife discoveries. This is in stark contrast to most safari experiences – for the safari has become a popular and ever more attainable travel experience and stories of 8 vehicles lined up to observe a small pride of lions 10 meters or more from the road are far from uncommon. Standouts from our game drive included a family of cheetahs trotting around lazily after a recent meal, and happening upon 6 lions taking an afternoon nap under an acacia tree. Not one meter away from us, delicate and mighty, they regarded us with the full realization of their power and majesty, not even remotely intimidated by our presence. As incredible of an experience as it was, after a full day speeding and bumping along the savannah, the thing I most desired was a tension melting massage, and once again, I was in luck, because unlike most safari camps and lodges, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti also boasts a world class spa. The spa is comprised of six free standing, stilted treatment villas, each with its own changing area, shower and sun deck that looks out directly into nature. I had the “The lodge truly blends signature kina massage, where a the culture and heated Masai stick is used to ease the tension out of each and every muscle for 90 minutes of pure relaxation. My therapist suggested that I opt out of the background music and instead open the glass doors of the treatment room and listen to sounds of nature throughout my treatment – a sensation I will certainly not forget. My spa treatment was followed the next morning by a gentle yoga session by the excellent on site yogi and therapist and was observed throughout by a curious duiker outside of the open windows. The second evening of my stay was spent at Boma Grill, the lodge’s signature dining experience, with a focus on blending traditional and contemporary African cooking. Many will be unfamiliar with the cuisine, but the waiters are skilful with their recommendations and myself and my companion are still reminiscing about the wonderful meal we had. The seating plan is circular and is centred around an open air fire pit around which the Masai deliver a memorable performance each evening. As if these experiences were not enough, the lodge also offers excursions ranging from hot air balloon safaris to 90 minute bush walks with a ranger. There is a fascinating on site discovery centre which showcases the unique history and culture of the Serengeti and the Masai people, and highlights the many social responsibility programs the Four Seasons takes part in the surrounding area. The Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti and the Serengeti itself both more than live up to the iconic names and reputations behind them, and as our manmade world continues to encroach on nature, as the incessantly running machines and lights spread ever outward, places such as this become fewer and farther between, making the urgency to see and experience them before they disappear or diminish ever greater. 92

Inspired by one of the most beautiful love stories in the world, we had the pleasure to meet the genius behind the brand: Paolo Terenzi. Not only did the Italian perfumer visit the country for an in depth presentation, but also, to create a personalised perfume for each attendee. We had a blast!

Miss Ohlala
Spoil me with loyalty, I can finance myself I’ve always had an issue with women who can’t handle a real conversation. And what I mean by a real conversation: discussing real life matters such as art, politics, and so forth. Today’s definition of what makes a woman depends on the society we live in – whether it’s Western or Eastern. Regardless of which one you live in, or grew up in, we women are still slaves to our society. Sadly, we are still figuring out who we are as a gender and what we offer but we’ve forgotten how powerful we are. Not to mention how important we are when it comes to continuing the human race. Since I was a teenager I’ve always been a feminist and firm believer of the fact that an educated woman is a woman not to be reckoned with. I cringe at the idea of depending on a man, and having to ask for money to buy a pair of shoes. Independence is a word I quite often use to describe the life I would like to live. I started working when I was 15 – baby-sitting here and there
to learn the value of money. Later at 18 it became a necessity to work for the independence I was longing for. By the age of 23, I bought my first diamond ring, a true satisfaction of selfdetermination, power and independence of not needing anyone to finance my cravings and dreams. Some men understand the power of an independent woman; others get intimidated by those who stand up for such rights. It’s pathetic to waste a life waiting for someone else to pin point your self-worth. There is no point in going by someone else’s needs and standards when you can create your own. So next time you want to buy that thing you crave, make sure it comes out of your pocket for true power.
“We live in a society where women are constantly beaten up for the way we think, act and dress. I’m a feminist at heart, and always thought I’ve been too much of a woman for the men I’ve dated”
