It is that time of year again where we feel that we have nothing to wear yet everywhere to go. With warm weather and packed social calendars, your summer outfits need to keep you comfortable and looking your best. Read on to get the inside scoop on this summer’s fashion trends and outfit ideas, or have a peruse over our beauty pages to ensure that you’re glowing for all the right reasons. We’re all about throwing the right kind of shade so we have also gathered a roundup of the most coveted eyewear that you can thank us for later. On a serious note, we were deeply saddened to hear about the recent death of renowned handbag-and-accessories designer Kate Spade, whos brand recently announced that it would donate $1 million to mental-health awareness to honour its late founder. This loans the notion that we can never truly know what is going on in someone’s mind, but, we can be aware of our own actions - a little really does go a long way. Why not ask that friend that you haven’t seen for a while out for coffee or tell someone that they look lovely - after all, this may be the simple pick-me-up that one needs when everything else seems to be building up that day. There is no harm in sharing positive vibes other than the simple reason of ‘just because’. Whether you’re opting for a staycation or off globetrotting I wish you all a fabulously indulgent summer full of laughter and memories. Oh, and be sure to pack our favourite accessory...your smile.

PROTECTION PLUS As we enjoy the summer, our skin suffers and reacts by producing increased sweat and sebum that disturb the skin’s natural equilibrium. In turn, the dehydrating effects of climate controlled interiors can leave the complexion dull and in need of hydration. To cater to this skin in flux, AESOP offers new formulations to protect, balance, and soothe. Daily protection from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays is key to sustaining healthy, supple skin. In addition to broad-spectrum protection, AESOP’s SPF formulations deliver hydration and skin-softening nourishment.

BEAUTY Column
t’s officially Summer and if your bags aren’t already packed, now is the time to get your skincare regime sorted. Luggage packing aside, the very act of flying depletes moisture from your skin and it’s super important to ensure you don’t arrive at your destination with dry skin, cracked lips, and an impending breakout. Here’s all the best advice to ensure you remain fresh-faced from one time zone to the next.
PREPARATION IS KEY
Get organised and pack your zip lock bag of hydrating products and make-up wipes on your flight to save your skin from dehydration. A hydrating facial mist is perfect also to keep topping up throughout the flight. Upon returning from your holiday, be sure to book yourself in for a facial to restore moisture to your skin and to deep cleanse your pores from using sunscreen or other products.
APPLY SERUM
Moisture is key so whether you prep your skin before you hit the airport or after the plane has taken off, moisturiser is the key to your skin staying hydrated. Using a serum under your moisturiser helps lock in extra moisture that you will need on a long-haul flight. Oil based serums are best as they last longer and don’t dry out as quickly. A sheet mask is also a great idea on a flight and will keep your skin plump.
THICK CREAMS ARE YOUR FRIEND
Apply a heavy moisturiser or even a night cream when you’re flying so that your skin soaks in as much moisture as it can and it will also help to create a sort of barrier. Then about 30 minutes before landing freshen up with a makeup wipe and apply a quick coat of makeup and you will arrive glowing.
APPLY SPF
SPF is super important, even on a flight, even though you are in the plane and not outside, you still need SPF on your skin as keeping your window open during daytime flights can cause skin damage, too. Apply a moisturiser with spf pre-flight to protect your skin.
REFRESH WITH DRY SHAMPOO
HIGH FLYER HEADING ON A FABULOUS VACATION THIS SUMMER? ANGELA BEITZ EXPLAINS THE KEY POINTS TO KEEPING YOUR SKIN HYDRATED AND GLOWING FOR THE PERFECT HOLIDAY ARRIVAL
Nothing ruins your hair like a long haul flight. A full-size aerosol spray bottle of your favourite formula won’t make it past security so instead, try a dry shampoo that comes in a powder formula to avoid the hassle of running out to buy the travel size. Just sprinkle a little bit at the roots and use your fingers to work it in.
OPT FOR CREAM MAKE-UP
Cream make-up products are more hydrating and are much easier to apply in your seat and discount the need for brushes. Pack a few key cream make-up products (concealer, blush and eye shadow) everything can be easily applied using fingers or a Beautyblender which saves space and makes it easy to reapply before landing. Swipe on a quick, fresh make-up look and you are good to go. www.ohlala-magazine.com

THE NO NEEDLE BOTOX LOOKING TO ACHIEVE A NATURAL LOOK WITHOUT COSMETIC SURGERY OR THE USE OF PAINFUL NEEDLES? ANGELA BEITZ DISCOVERS THE NEW WAY TO ACHIEVE THIS WITH FILLERINA
F
illerina is the result of five years of research at Labo Cosprophar Suisse, renowned for its expertise, high standards of clinical safety and ability to bring best-inclass products to the cosmetic industry and consumers. Fillerina has proven to be an alternative to cosmetic surgeries and other injectable treatments such as Botox, for gaining face volume and to rejuvenate your skin with natural ingredients. What is the 14-Day Filler Treatment? Although the skin is equipped with a natural defence system to fight against ageing with the help of certain skin nutrients, consistent sun exposure causes the skin to lose its ability to produce these nutrients and this tends to accelerate the ageing process. Fortunately, Fillerina’s 14-Day Filler Treatment Kit hydrates the skin while giving it a firm lift and youthful glow. How does it work? Made with Hyaluronic acid (HA), a type of nutrient that is naturally produced by our skin to hydrate and revitalise the skin, this non-invasive topical filler treatment has been clinically approved to provide positive

filling effect by plumping out deep wrinkles and restoring youthful skin. The treatment is also formulated with another active component – Matrifull, which acts over time on the skin matrix to promote the reconstruction of the natural skin filling substances such as collagen. How is it applied? This DIY treatment kit comes with 2ml of gel filler and nourishing film (14 doses) along with two precision applicators that allows its users to squeeze the serum along the problem areas of the skin. The easily absorbable formula of the product makes it capable in providing visible results within just two weeks. How does the Fillerina Plus Day Cream work?
This daily filler treatment cream is designed to moisturise, protect and replenish your face and neck without leaving a greasy or sticky feeling. Formulated with 8 Hyaluronic Acid (HA) molecules, as opposed to the usual 6 HA molecules found in the regular Fillerina treatments, Fillerina Plus Day Cream is designed to correct deep set wrinkles caused by aging. It penetrates deeply into the skin to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and leaves the skin feeling more supple and soft. Which one is best for us? Fillerina Plus Day Cream is available in two different dosages, Grades 4 and 5. Grade 4 is targeted for remediating evident relaxation and sagging of tissues, while Grade 5 is suited for repairing the tissues of more mature skin. How should it be applied? For best results, apply a small amount of the cream on your face and neck with your fingertips, to let it penetrate deeply into your skin. The Fillerina Plus Day Cream is suitable for use on its own as well as in conjunction with other Fillerina treatments. Tell us about the Lip Volume Treatment? If you have ever dreamt about having fuller lips but can’t bring yourself to go under the needle then Fillerina Lip Volume is your dream come true. Using a patented blend of 8 hyaluronic acids, which permeate through the layers of skin, Fillerina recreates fullness, reduces wrinkles around the mouth and hydrates the lip without any invasive action. Fillerina uses a mix of hyaluronic acids of varying molecular weights for effective action and visible results.
How does it work? The convenient gel pen spreads the patented solution evenly over your lips. Fillerina Lip Volume should be applied to clean dry lips five times a day for a month to see the best results. It can be applied as a base before your lipstick, but make sure you allow the gel to fully soak in before applying lipstick. It can be used alone to moisturise your lips. www.labosuisse.com.

Located in the heart of the city, the Hilton Doubletree is a perfect fit for a quick staycation, or to stay whilst visiting Doha on business. When checking into the contemporary setting of the hotel lobby there is a small delightful cafe serving instantly recognisable Starbucks coffee, and there is ample seating in this stressfree environment for a casual meeting to take place. There was also a professional feel to the way the check-in lady greeted me, making me feel at ease that everything was in her hands, plus, I was handed a complimentary cookie, which will always make me feel welcome. Having visited the Doubletree for meetings in the past, I was somewhat familiar with the hotel but this was my first time staying here. The elevators had the most perfect selfie mirrors - the kind that lets you get a full outfit shot in one click! Ladies, you know what I mean. Upon entering the room for the first time I was very happy to find the room was welcoming and featured large windows allowing ample daylight to penetrate into the room, and it showcases a great view of the “The elevators had city and beyond! kind that lets you It was easy and convenient to find everything that I needed in the modern and neatly organised room totally in keeping with everything that you would expect from the Hilton. The look of a freshly made king size bed was calling me but I had to setup my laptop (thank goodness for the workspace setup in the layout of the room) to get some work done for a couple of hours before heading to the pool!

The pool is located in the ‘Pure’ lounge on the roof of the hotel, and during the cooler months it’s a great way to experience the skyline whilst taking a dip and tasting one of their signature cocktails from the bar. During the hotter months they offer protection from the heat of the sun by climate control AC and covering the roof, although don’t worry as you still have the beautiful view of the corniche. In the evenings Pure is the perfect place to enjoy some music whilst having a relaxing drink, or two, during my stay the World Cup had just started and they had huge TV screens to enjoy the games, so I settled down to take in the game and the atmosphere. Soon after the sun had set it was time to get dressed for dinner. The bathroom was well equipped with a huge bathtub, but on this occasion I opted for the rainwater shower instead! The complimentary beauty products were L’Occitane, a beauty brand I just love! The hotel was conveniently casual (and family friendly) in their dining options so I wouldn’t dress up too much unless you were heading to the bar afterwards. I swapped my stilettos to flats for dinner! The hotel guests eat at the L2 restaurant and the menu alongside the service there was truly charming I must say. The starters were huge, the meats were cooked to perfection and the desserts were just delicious. There is also a smoking area serving shisha too for all the shisha lovers out there! For those who have visited the hotel before, the ground floor restaurant ‘Open’ is changing and will be a new Seafood restaurant aptly named “Claw” although not open yet, I’m hoping to be invited back to try what will undoubtedly be fantastic food.
“During the hotter months they offer protection from the heat of the sun by climate control AC and covering the roof, although don’t worry as you still have the beautiful view of the corniche.” After rolling back to my room (from being so full), I decided to order in breakfast so I put the request on the door and fell into the most comfortable night’s sleep. Sure enough, the breakfast and especially the fresh pancakes were really worth waking up for in the morning! I still had some work to do before my massage appointment in the afternoon so I requested a late checkout and the receptionist was happy to oblige! For the fitness fanatic there is a fully equipped gym, with the latest fitness machines with all mod cons to assist with your workout. On this occasion though I skipped the gym and headed for a massage at the Aqua Lounge Spa which proved to be the perfect ending to my quick city break! I enjoyed a full body massage in the hands of an attentive masseuse. The massage was the ‘relaxation oil massage’ using soothing aromatherapy oils. It was one of the handful of ‘pick me up’ or ‘rejuvenation’ treatments that they had in their convenient lounge spa. It made me feel so relaxed and rejuvenated after such a busy holiday period, ready to face the rest of my day with a fresh outlook! Reformer Pilates has taken the world by storm, thanks to its ability to transform the body in a short space of time. In this day-and-age everyone is looking to optimise their time including workouts. Sessions involve dynamic and powerful movements on the Reformer machine, with resistance applied from springs and bands according to your individual needs and preferences. With over 250 different movement options, each class is challenging, varied and engaging - something to suit every individual. In the words of Joseph Pilates, who created the practice: “In 10 sessions, you feel better, 20 sessions you look better, 30 sessions you have a completely new body.” This particular workout allowed me to really pinpoint the areas of my body that were stronger than others. For instance, I felt more confident when the focus was on my abs and obliques rather than my hamstrings or abductors (the muscles on the outside of the thigh). Instead of feeling weak and frustrated, I found myself setting a personal goal to get stronger. That’s the amazing thing about Pilates as I find it to be a peaceful workout, but,I feel such a surge of adrenaline to work harder, push more… just one.more.rep! I left wanting more, so I’m giving myself a month of classes to see where I can take my body just in time for my summer holiday (and bikini weather) with my best friends. My hope is that in four-weeks time I’ll have better balance, leaner legs, and more flexibility. Encore is a brand new concept and the first of its kind in Qatar. Encore’s two studios are both bright and beautiful spaces with state of the art equipment adorning the areas. Classes include: Reformer Essentials, Core Tone, Gluteboost, Reformed Vinyasa Yoga and Reformer Barre. Class sizes are limited to ten people to ensure each participant receives individual care and attention. One-to-one training is also available for those seeking a more exclusive, bespoke service to accelerate their desired results. Founders Al Fardan and Abuissa are revolutionising fitness in Qatar. Alongside Encore, they have recently founded four other unique wellness ventures: 58

RideTribe, Niya Yoga, OxFitness Lab and Evergreen Organics so you know that you’re receiving the very finest care. Al Fardan says: “Reformer pilates is the missing ingredient that I’ve been looking for to really sculpt and strengthen my body without the bulk. I’m beyond thrilled to be offering these group and private classes to the community in Qatar and cannot wait for you to experience the incredible results!” We concur. www.encorepilates.qa @encore.pilates

PRECIOUS STONES. UNIQUE LUXURY. POSITIVE ENERGY… What more could a girl ask for? We discover why JACQUIE AICHE designs are internationally coveted
W
hen touching down in California, it isn’t uncommon to witness the likes of the A-List set strolling the streets of LA adorned in Jacquie Aiche designs - Alessandra Ambrosio, Emily Ratajkowski, Chanel Iman, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Shanina Shaik and Rihanna are but a few of the “big names” in the brand’s tribe. Created from 14k solid gold, genuine diamonds and gemstones, this exquisite jewellery label is inspired by Founder and Designer Jacquie Aiche, who blends her Egyptian Native American heritage into the brand’s creations. Designed for the rebellious woman who lives for ‘diamond details and sensual layers’, each adornment is intended to bring ‘beauty and positive energy’ to its beholder. Working directly with miners to hand select each and every precious stone embellishing her original pieces, the craftsmanship of Aiche’s yearly collections often depends on what ‘mother nature’ has uniquely delivered. Designed and handcrafted in Aiche’s Los Angeles studio, the brand continues to be shaped by its founding philosophy of “spreading positive energy, every day”. Crediting the brand’s distinct style to the unique tapestry of Aiche’s blended cultural background, the designer says she channels her ethnic roots through the sacred aesthetic of her full range of pieces, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, body jewellery and anklets. 60

“My Native American heritage pulls me towards turquoise, fossils and precious gemstones, while my Egyptian roots influence the use of Middle Eastern nuances such as hammered gold, goddess imagery and amulet pieces.” ‘Created for those who adore to be adorned, lovers of precious stones, believers in the energy of minerals, and women who live for their diamond details and sensual layers’, the brand’s growing list of Hollywood converts speaks for itself. In 2011, Aiche designed a one off bespoke engagement ring for then-fiance of John Legend, Chrissy Teigen. Further, Rihanna was such a huge fan of Aiche’s designs that she even collaborated with the brand to launch a line of jewellery inspired body art in 2015. Aiche first launched the brand over a decade ago after a lifelong fascination with the healing power of stones, fuelled also by personal frustrations toward the limited styles of fine jewellery available on the market at that time. A far cry from her childhood days of painting and gifting stones to friends and family, Aiche has since translated creative expression through stones into an internationally acclaimed fine jewellery label adorned by the celebrities and VIPs alike. Aiche says she believes a woman’s natural beauty can be illuminated with the right piece of jewellery, and that will always be her mission, “I want to create pieces that will make every woman look and feel uniquely beautiful. Traditional, classical jewellery is amazing, but it’s just not me. I’ve always had a very wild and spiritual nature. I think that rebellious spirit to constantly shake things up is what differentiates me as a designer. I create pieces for those who adore to be adorned, lovers of precious stones, believers in the energy of minerals.” www.jacquieaiche.com @jacquieaiche www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEHIND THE SEAMS In the chic setting of LA BOUTIQUE BLANCHE, our fashion insider, POOJA (@lesrebellessquad) interviewed Qatari sisters MAQDEEM and AISHA AL NAAMA, discussing everything from the launch of Maqdeem’s Resort Collection to what it takes to be a young, up-andcoming modest fashion brand in Qatar.
T
ell us about Maqdeem and why it is unique compared to other Qatari brands. For the latest collection we are focusing on ready-to-wear separates which you can mix and match. We try to create exceptional pieces. It’s luxury, but, at the same time it’s affordable and for every collection we create, we try to blend modern style with our culture, and that is why it’s modest. How has Maqdeem evolved since its first collection in 2015? Maqdeem started the brand in 2015 with a collection more traditional in its design aesthetic, but it was one of the first brands in the market to make colourful abayas. As a young designer she felt that local women were more conservative and wasn’t sure how her collection would be perceived. She needn’t have worried as the response was very positive and she was really pleased when the collection completely sold out. “Aisha Al Naama (Maqdeem’s sister) came on board after that initial success and we decided that we could be more edgy with a more creative collaboration and continue in a different direction. We created a t-shirt and sweater capsule collection in partnership with a Qatari artist Al Mulla, who created the artwork for the t-shirts, exclusively for Maqdeem. It was 100% made in Qatar and gained a lot of local demand.” “With every collection we have had we have gained different customers and this Resort Collection is our biggest collection to date, with a full range and the focus on RTW. The collection includes shirts, pants, skirts, dresses to cater for modern east-meets-west style.” Revealed Aisha who talked about their recent Resort Collection. “The colour palette is very fresh, perfect for the summer, or colours you can wear to any hot summer destinations, all year round” Maqdeem adds. Is your collection curated and designed in Qatar? What inspires your designs? “We have been working on the collection since October last year. It has been designed in Qatar and made in Turkey. This was a step forward for us to produce to international standards production wise.” said Aisha. Maqdeem, then went on to describe the Resort collection “The inspiration behind the collection is not limited to one particular thing, we get inspired by our surroundings. It’s about a feeling, sensing and living things. For the latest collection we were inspired by desert tones, palm trees, the colour of the ocean and the sky. You will notice this from the embroidery and colour palettes that you see in our designs”. As a fashion label owned by two sisters, how do you work together? What is your chemistry as a fashion duo? They start by laughing and looking at each other as if teasing one another. Their passion was to be creative and design from a young age. They brainstorm their ideas for their collections and have a trusted designer that then evolves this through sketches to visualise this. They are meticulously involved in all aspects of the product life cycle from the start of the design all the way to production. They have been through a whirlwind of new experience from how to deal with PR, customers, and social media - they have ‘learned along the way.’

“The inspiration behind the collection is not limited to one particular thing, we get inspired by our surroundings. It’s about a feeling, sensing and living things.” “Working together comes with a lot of attention sometimes, because you have different opinions, but then we have an advantage of having two forces combining ideas. We tend to add onto each others thoughts. Maqdeem went on to say “‘my sister was actually there from the beginning since I started my business but she wasn’t officially part of it. At that time I focused a lot of my attention on the details and the designs. I got a lot of advice on the way so I developed and evolved (the collection) from my sister and my brother too (a VCU student), he kept pushing me a lot. My sister always had these creative thoughts, especially in relation to social media. ‘Maqdeem you have to do this, do that and don’t do that’ she obsessed a lot too as she spends so may hours on social media, paying close attention to trends.” The global fashion market is hugely investing in modest wear, what is your opinion on the rise of modest fashion? “I really think that modest fashion is playing a major part in the fashion industry. For me being modest is not just about or directly related to religion. Sometimes it’s about being comfortable. It can add grace, elegance and be demure. A lot of fashion icons throughout history have dressed modestly. People think that being modest is relative to Islam but it’s not. There are other religions which encourage dressing modestly too. A big part of it is the age too. You will see more of the younger generation in their 20’s who are comfortable in showing skin and as they grow older they want to dress more conservatively in general. I recently read that the international fashion industry is depending 68
www.ohlala-magazine.com
on the Middle East region. They are expecting that in 2019 that the income from the modest wear will be around $484bn. A lot of the big brands like D&G are considering modest wear. H&M are considering modest wear and several other names. It’s good to see that and we feel that our label gives an option for such a market between high end and high street. Something that’s modest but more chic and affordable whilst maintaining a reputable quality, which you can see in the details and embellishments” Your collection has been described as ‘for everyone of all cultures and backgrounds bridging the gap between different communities and backgrounds.’ Tell me about some pieces that reflect this ethos in your Resort collection? “We have longer length pieces, elegant, chic and modest. Most of the pieces are very versatile. In every collection we try to create exceptional pieces that blend in the Arabic culture. We try to cater something for everyone, of all ages” said Aisha. On describing a blue buttoned jacket with a long hem, Aisha explained that “it has an Eastern feeling as it has long sleeves, but what the customer chooses to wear it with could make it modest or showy, depending on the customer’s taste. They can wear it with tight pants and even short shorts.” Their mix-and-match separates can be paired up easily. Recent feedback from an older customer was that “the design for a particular dress was like a 70’s smock catered to the taste of the older woman but with a contemporary twist.” explained Aisha. What are your best received pieces from your current Resort collection? Maqdeem innocently declared “Well, it depends on the customers needs. Their body shape, skin tone, and the colours that they prefer all impact on their final decision. I would say though that with no exception, everyone loves our blue pieces. I have not met anyone who doesn’t love the blue pieces in our collection. Actually that blue long shirt you picked, that was one of the best received pieces so far. The pleated blue dress in our collection was also very well received.” Do you have a specialised fabric which is synonymous to your signature collection? Aisha explained that “the colour, print and fabric is curated for each piece of the collection. Our fabrics are breathable and lightweight. They are semi synthetic which are perfect for warm weather climates. When you touch the pieces, they have a particular sensation which keeps cool in hot weather.” They meticulously picked their fabrics which range from tencel, viscose and jacquard. The summery prints are hand designed and the gorgeous embellishments are handmade. How do you feel about the modest fashion scene in Qatar? “It is growing and there are new brands that are coming out every day. The way we consider ourselves different is by incorporating ourselves as East-meets-West when it comes to style. In the local market ladies are really desperate for modest wear.” Aisha went on to say, “I noticed from quite early on that if I have the same piece as a sleeveless dress and one with long sleeves they would ask for the long sleeve variation. The culture is changing. During Eid women would have wanted want to show their abayas before, but now they prefer to show off their clothes especially for those that wear a hijab. They want to be dressed up, yet modest.” What is next for Maqdeem? Where do you see the brand in the future? “We are positioning ourselves internationally. I see Maqdeem in boutiques and department stores around the world. This was my target from the beginning” said Maqdeem. Aisha went on to say “...that is why we chose La Boutique Blanche. There are certain public figures which we want to dress someday. Very soon we would love to showcase our range in department stores in the region and internationally too. That is a major goal.” www.maqdeem.com @maqdeem

he large capacity Corniche restaurant hosts a spectacular seafood buffet that should be right up your street if you like good fish and other marine produce. This place was quickly filled up and it can only be a good sign that so many people have come to enjoy this food spread. For those looking to begin with something light, fresh and super tasty – you need to head towards the salad station. I started with a plate of fresh greens which all had a fish theme. There was tuna and potatoes, octopus salad and a delicious prawn and pomelo salad too among many others. The sushi was intricately showcased and it tasted rather sumptuous and with the added bonus of a few little twists of flavour, well, that only made it all the more moreish and addictive. There was also a giant pot with a hot and homely seafood chowder, something that is often hard to find in this part of the world. I hadn’t had a chowder this good since I was last in Ireland so props to the culinary team at the Doha Marriott. There was also a seafood linguine and even a bountiful paella, adding to the hot main offerings which definitely warmed us up with piping hot flavours. Word of warning though: pace yourself. For me, the treasure part to this seafood night was the side room just off from the main buffet where a row of rather imposing-looking fish stared back at me. The chefs stand by ‘guarding their gold’ ready to cook it fresh for you - which they execute perfectly. There were local offerings such as hammour, but, amidst said home comforts there were also more rare options like yellow snapper and crabs, alongside the ever-popular shrimp. The Executive Chef informed me that they have a contract with a reliable supplier who ensures that the hotel receives the best and freshest catch of whatever is in the sea right now – therefore, the options in this room can change from week to week depending on what is caught. Now, that is certainly fresh thinking! A lot of the fish they catch comes from the waters just off of Oman, which means that you’re bound to get a great selection.
“The Executive Chef informed me that they have a contract with a reliable supplier who ensures that the hotel receives the best and freshest catch of whatever is in the sea right now – therefore, the options in this room can change from week to week depending on what is caught. Now, that is certainly fresh thinking!” I ordered a large crab, some salmon and a little yellow snapper which was fully gutted and the head was removed. All were cooked directly to my liking and the crab especially was beautiful to taste - truly melt-in-your-mouth calibre. There was some calamari too which we had grilled - much to our pleasant surprise - on account of the usual deep-fried option unfortunately proving commonplace in most establishments... well, not here with their refreshing list of delicacies. Such a plethora of flavours positively shocked my palate and I would have definitely gone back for seconds had it not been for the mouthwatering mussels which were proving a real hit with the crowd. This is a very family-friendly affair which was noticeable in the many tables packed with parents and children alike - little ones were free to play and enjoy their time too! A buffet event means that you can keep getting up and going back for as much as you want to try - this is an encouraging social aspect for people making an evening of it. However, in case there is anyone in your group who isn’t too fussed about seafood, the venue also has a first-class à la carte menu, catering to every diner. Smiles all around guaranteed. Friday Seascape is definitely one to put on your 2018 foodie bucket list in Doha and we know that you will fall hook, line and sinker for this absolute pearl of gastronomy - we did. MISS Ohlala
LIFE IN PLASTIC MISS OHLALA DELVES BEHIND THE LENS TO DISCUSS IF THERE IS MORE GOING ON BEHIND THE EVERYDAY ‘SELFIE’ THAN WHAT MEETS THE PUBLIC EYE. Am I smiling because I’m happy? Or am I happy because I’m smiling? In a psychological version of the chicken-or-egg game, researchers have long tried to understand the relationship between facial expressions and our emotions. It appears that the jury is out on this one as traffic seems to go both ways on this street - when we smile, our brains decide that means we must be happy, whether the smile is genuine or forced. It feels like I’m talking to my partner - I just cannot win. People who frequently post selfies are often targets for accusations of narcissism and tastelessness. But what’s really going on here? What is it about the self-portrait that’s so resonant as a form of communication? And why, psychologically, might someone feel so compelled to snap the perfect selfie that they’d risk their life, or the lives of others? This is at the very extreme dimension of taking a selfie amidst dangerous surroundings and/or activities, not the usual risk that I face of cracking the photographic lens when I fall privy to such a mundane act of vanity. Some have argued that selfies can boost confidence by showing others how ‘awesome’ you are, and can preserve important memories. I’ll be honest and say that I have been guilty of posting to rival uploads of some of my friends. Who doesn’t want to see my beverage intake midweek on holiday? Mimosas anyone? SNAP! In this sense, the selfie is the perfect medium: it’s an easy way to offer proof of an exciting life, extraordinary talent and ability, unique experiences, personal beauty and attractiveness. Isn’t it? I also find it important not only to ask why people post selfies, but also to ask why anyone bothers looking at them. We’ve all fallen guilty to berating that person who has uploaded ‘yet another selfie’ or found ourselves ‘nitpicking’ at a recent holiday
snap - in its primary form if we’re honest with ourselves is it just mere envy? The approval that comes from “likes” and positive comments on social media is rewarding – particularly for the lonely, isolated or insecure and those most likely to post selfies appear to have lower self-esteem than those who don’t. In sum, selfies draw attention, which seems like a good thing but, so do car accidents when people are quite literally glued to their smartphones - the adonis to provide affirmation of popularity, albeit in a virtual reality. So a picture may be worth a thousand words, but perhaps a thousand smiling selfies are worth even more to our mental health and overall happiness. We’re all for celebrating individuality after all, aren’t we? www.ohlala-magazine.com
