Camélia Brodé open watch

Like a perfectly draped ribbon of white diamonds, let this delicately adorn your wrist for 2015. A symbol of purity, the camellia flower embodies and resonates Mademoiselle Chanel’s intimate surroundings. A flower with utter simplicity and impeccable elegance is not only CHANEL’S signature look, but embodies the spirit of CHANEL throughout the world. Geometrical contours, immaculate white, petals displayed in a classical alignment: the camellia is a flower which blossoms in CHANEL fine jewellery.

Chopard aims straight

for the

heart On Valentine’s Day, happy are those who successfully touch their loved one’s heart with a flaming Chopard arrow of love! As the season of warm embraces and tender vows rolls around, the jeweller delights in playing Cupid and serving as a messenger of the most beautiful declarations of love.

Happy Diamonds

Inherently romantic by nature, Chopard has made the heart its unmistakable symbol that is once again in the spotlight with this discreetly elegant Happy Diamonds set composed of a pendant necklace, a ring and matching ear studs. Sparkling diamonds dance around white gold hearts adorned with claw-set diamonds. This infinitely graceful and sentimental gift is an ideal means of confessing or reaffirming love. 28

Happy Sport Medium Automatic

With the Happy Sport Medium Automatic on the wrist, there’s no chance of being late for the next dinner for two. This rose gold model from Chopard’s iconic watch line embodies a blend of refinement, femininity and high precision. The radiance of the diamond-set bezel and the seven moving diamonds on the dial is cleverly enhanced by the flaming burgundy shade of its alligator leather strap.

Haute Joaillerie

Adorned with hearts and slender arabesques in rose gold, sprinkled with diamonds and pear-cut amethyst cabochons, this stunning pendant necklace and its matching ear pendants look like something straight out of A Thousand and One Nights. Like a precious talisman endowed with the secret power of ensuring lasting love, this delicately crafted jewellery set will delight many a modern-day Scheherazade.

And for gentlemen‌

Each year, the Mille Miglia welcomes a new model. Devotees of fine sporty mechanical watches will be thrilled by the Mille Miglia 2014 edition with its vintage detail and its gentleman-driver personality. It proudly flies the colours of Italy with a white dial bearing a tachometric scale, red hands and a green minute circle. Equipped with a self-winding COSC-certified chronograph movement, the Mille Miglia 2014 cuts an impressive figure, as much for its rigorously accurate mechanism as for its Italian-style aesthetic. Made of stainless steel, this watch may be teamed with a topstitched Barenia calfskin strap or with the classic rubber strap embossed with the Dunlop racing-tyre motif. Complementing this modern and sophisticated timepiece are stainless steel Mille Miglia cufflinks, topped by a slender black rubber ring trimmed with red and also featuring the famous Dunlop tread that has become the signature of the Mille Miglia universe. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Celebrity Scoop

Chantal Kreviazuk Keeping it Real With four albums behind her, new single ‘I Will Be’ out now and a catalogue of writing credits for other artists, Chantal Kreviazuk doesn’t have anything to prove. Ben Whittaker caught up with the multi-talented Canadian to talk about her journey from classically trained pianist to international singer-songwriter.

Music was always going to be a career path for Chantal Kreviazuk. As a classically trained pianist, she proved something of a child prodigy, winning competitions from a young age and eventually signing a recording contract with Sony as a vocalist. “For a lot of people music becomes a choice but in my case it was almost the other way around. Music chose me. It was always a natural relationship. I ate, breathed, slept and played music. I’m not sure if I would have had much of a life without it.” Following a serious motorcycle accident in Italy that left her immobile for several months, she began writing her own pop songs and released her debut album Under These Rocks in June 1997. “It was probably one of the clearest examples of something good coming out of an initially bad incident and I certainly drew on the musical influences from my youth. I had a lot of time to do little else but that! “I’ve always loved authentic music. I loved Lennon, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell. I loved words that sounded poetic but confessional and clever and true. I loved instrumentation that was complex but accessible and beautiful and organic- piano, guitar- raw and unprocessed. I also loved Prince and The Police and Bob Marley. I loved church music. Connecting with God.” That album sold 100,000 copies on the strength of the single ‘God Made Me’ and her cover of ‘Leaving On A Jet Plane’ was also featured on the soundtrack for the hit movie “Armageddon”. Chantal followed this up with a second album, ‘Colour Moving And Still’ in April 2000 and a month later she won two Juno Awards for ‘Best Female Artist’ and Best Pop/Adult Album’. Fast forward to 2015 and with several albums behind her now and almost two decades in the industry, she has seen a lot of changes in the business. “I feel like the sound of music has completely changed and yet we still love a phenomenal melody that has soul, is innovative and connects with our deepest selves.” Can she illuminate us on the inspiration behind her 34

latest song, ‘I Will Be’? “It was written because I get sick of judgment. We all go around making judgments when it works for us. But we make exceptions when it suits us too. It’s more about tolerance.” So what does she enjoy more – writing or performing? “I love singing. When it’s my truth and feels like it came from a guttural place, something that no one could ever take away from me. When it’s ‘trying too hard’ or put on.... That’s not good! “I do love the creative process especially when I can dig deep and touch on my heart and feel like a true artist and not be worrying about commerce so much. They both have their good and bad points and times. That’s life. Nothing is always perfect but it’s definitely who I am and what I do most naturally.” And as she writes for other artists does she find it easy having someone else sing her compositions or does she occasionally feel she could do it better? “Sometimes I do believe I could do it better but many factors come into play and I can’t sing all of the songs I write anyway... writing songs is like having babies. I would love ten babies, but once you birth them, you have to nurture them. I already have a hundred or so songs in my catalogue that I have delivered to my audience. I can’t sing them all so I am careful what I put there.” Does she have any plans for a tour outside of the US? “I am sure that will be something for the future but first I need to see what happens with ‘I Will Be’”. Music seems particularly affected by the rise of reality TV. What kind of impact does she feel it has on the industry? “I think that reality TV has a negative impact on society, so sure, this also has an affect on the direction the industry moves in. It’s not ‘real’ or authentic. It’s scripted for the most part. All the situations are planned. It’s designed to showcase people in a certain ‘outrageous’ manner and so I think it can play to a toxic ‘us’ that has a need to see others in a volatile or low place. “In my opinion the format is tired. I love to see people in a way that reflects a higher set bar. “When things get dumbed down, we ultimately then see it in all areas of pop culture. I find this a bit scary. But then again, I want to see us in a beautiful and positive, civilised, educated and sophisticated light. “Bit of a tall order perhaps?” How does she feel other women are perceived in the business today? “On one hand it’s positive in my opinion that

women of all shapes and sizes are now being embraced. However, the messages of some of the appearances do frighten me. “Unfortunately, I think that women in the corporate world have to steer towards a more masculine agenda, whilst in the pop world they have to steer close to accentuating their sexuality. “Personally, I believe that intelligence is damn sexy and attractive and so when someone is clever and confident, defeminising or over sexualising isn›t necessary, or should not be.” There’s no doubting that the Internet and social media now play an important part of the modern artist’s career path. Does she see it as an integral part of her life? “This is an interesting question. Everyone’s definition of success is different. It’s all a matter of expectations, really. How much fame and notoriety is enough? People feel like they need to have success on dynastic scales today, when really, this doesn’t bring us more true love. “True love is where it’s at. So for me, singing from my heart and connecting with an audience that truly connects with me is good enough! I need to make the best impression in my own home and in my private time. Also, further to the expectations issue - someone can seemingly have crazy viral success on line, and it not translate at all. “So we really don’t have so much control in the end and we have to live, as artists, a balanced life that inspires us to create and is not dominated by outcomes and expectations but rather by a true sense of expression and love.” Is there one artist – living or dead – that she would like to perform with? “Honestly, I have recently performed with Neil Young. I have met with Joni Mitchell but not performed with her. That would be obviously ridiculous. She is such a great lady and I respect her the most. I love Adele. I feel I would like to co-write with her. John Lennon is gone. Bob Marley is gone. “One person I do work with is Kendrick Lamar and for me at least these have been some of the most surreal and incredible sessions of my life.” Outside of your career, how do you unwind? Do you have any particular hobbies or interests? “I paint, I knit, I spend a lot of time in nature. I am a hot yoga addict. I live every day to the fullest. Cooking, drinking wine, watching comedy, making music and love.”

“I believe that intelligence is damn sexy and attractive and so when someone is clever and confident, de-feminising or over sexualising isn’t necessary, or should not be.”

It is not a coincidence that Arushi Couture’s present collection is inspired by the Orient: the theme carries right through to the location shoot when once upon a time the French ship owners were sent to exotic places to bring back precious goods bringing their treasures back home and built themselves beautiful summer homes on the northern coast of Brittany in France. This land still offers the mystique of the past but remains quintessentially French resulting in a soul that is as diverse as it is elegant.

Nature and art de vivre have been combined and lend themselves seamlessly to the Oriental theme. Luxurious fabrics such as Organzas, Jacquard silk, Duchess satin, Lacquered Laces, mixed with tulles have been selected to create interesting volumes. To enhance the theme they’ve embroidered with metal and silk thread and hand painted skirts, while using Swarovski stones as accessories. The choice of colours was again heavily influenced by the wonderful palate of variety blossoming everywhere in the surrounding area of Brittany.

Loretta Miraglia, Corporate Senior Vice President, Global Brand Product Development and Innovation Where did you find inspiration to create The Illuminating Eye Gel? LM. It’s no secret that I have always been fascinated by the idea of opposites – and how harmonising two things that inherently would seem to be at odds with one another can create the most innovative and beautiful results. For instance, if we think about the actions of blurring and brightening, by definition it’s hard to see how they can work together: to blur is to make dim, indistinct or vague, and to brighten means to add more light. With the Illuminating Eye Gel, we want to show that opposites can converge to create something truly amazing. I was so inspired by this because I believe the eyes are the most powerful form of attraction – and even more powerful in communication. A woman may not speak a word but her eyes will tell you everything. So it makes sense that the bigger and brighter your eyes, the more attractive and telling they will be. This is what we wanted to bring out with The Illuminating Eye Gel; a product that blurs the visibility of imperfections while brightening the eyes. In true La Mer fashion we are bringing together two opposites for bright, luminescent, awakened eyes. How does founder, Dr. Max Huber continue to influence you? LM. Everything we create at La Mer is rooted in Dr. Huber’s legacy. It follows the craftsmanship, both artisanal and scientific, that he founded and are true to La Mer; from the fermentation process that transforms ingredients into highperformance formulas, to his time-intensive method and the use of energising sound and light. It was this light energy that sparked my interest for The Illuminating Eye Gel. You look at bioluminescence in nature and it’s breathtaking. The power of light comes through in so many forms – nature, art and science – and it’s irresistibly compelling. It’s that natural attraction to light, combined with the power of the eyes that I wanted to combine in creating The Illuminating Eye Gel. And after years in the www.ohlala-magazine.com

works, this incredible innovation brightens up our eyes so we can do the hardest job yet, master our own most powerful form of attraction. What can we expect from the Illuminating Eye Gel? LM. Expect the unexpected with the Illuminating Eye Gel. It’s lightweight, yet protective. It’s calming and cooling on contact, yet energising. It provides a beautiful soft focus effect, yet it illuminates the whole eye area for a bright, wide-eyed look. There’s no need to hide behind sunglasses anymore, because we’re unmasking your true beauty with the Illuminating Eye Gel. How do external stressors affect the eyes? LM. We know many factors affect our eyes – allergies, pollution, sun, smoking, lack of sleep, stress, life – but the number one underlying issue is inflammation. Inflammation is a nightmare for our eyes, causing so many problems from dark and tired to crepey and dull. La Mer’s legendary Miracle Broth is a powerful anti-irritant that visibly energises, renews and hydrates, giving back that

powerfully attractive twinkle to your eyes. What are the key ferments in The Illuminating Eye Gel formula? LM. To amplify the potent Miracle Broth and create a truly unique formula that our devotees would fall in love with, we researched for a number of years to engineer two new ferments – the Illuminating Ferment and the Awakening Ferment. First, we searched around the world and made a breathtaking discovery in Normandy, France, where we’ve been able to discover a Kelp Farm to nurture and grow algae in a sustainable environment. And on this Kelp Farm we found a very delicate, brown algae (Sea Fern) with amazing brightening activity. With this at the heart of the new Illuminating Ferment, for the first time we can help counter the visible effects of excess melanin around the eyes. For luminous, clear eyes, the Illuminating Ferment helps to boost radiance, soothe and brighten. To ensure we had the best of the best activity, we dialed up the energy to help strengthen the thin, fragile skin around the eyes. We found a Mineralized Algae, a fan-like algae that provides the critical minerals like calcium, which we need to boost energy and other cellular functions. With this algae and high levels of anti-oxidants, we’ve created the new Awakening Ferment, which helps boost visible energy, smooth the first signs of crepiness and strengthen delicate skin. In addition to all of this, The Awakening Ferment came with a surprise benefit. We were able to prove In Vitro testing that it helps protect our eyes from environmental stress from pollution – helping defend against these toxins, which are all around us. How do you use The Illuminating Eye Gel? LM. Personally, I keep one in my purse so it’s always on hand. This formula is a lightweight gel that cools and soothes on contact so you feel a boost of energy. It also contains lightbending sea pearls for an effect that immediately illuminates the eye area. For me, it’s a perfect pick me up – whether I hit that tired afternoon slump, after the gym in the morning or if I’m getting ready for a dinner out – The Illuminating Eye Gel helps to make me look more awake and energised. What’s more is that everyday someone tells me how they’ve used the product in a new way: on the eyelids as a primer under eye shadow to make the colour really pop; or paired with the Radiant Concealer under eyes to create a natural, flawless glow. We are just beginning to learn the infinite possibilities. OHLALA!

elebrate your union with a special someone at Ruka, an awardwinning venue conveniently located in the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, Seef District, it promises to make your romantic evening one to remember. Imagine dining under the stars by candlelight as you take in the stunning evening cityscape, holding hands with the one you love. Select from Ruka’s distinctive signature dishes to

please your taste buds and delight your senses. The cuisine is attractively presented, smells delicious and tastes exceptional, with a variety of flavour and texture fusions, all delicately balanced. Highlights we’d suggest are the hamachi usuzukuri pirikara, ninniku gake- tender sliced yellowtail, green chilli relish with ponzu and pickled garlic; maguro no tataki - sliced tuna, chilli daikon and ponzu sauce; avocado to asparagasu no salada – avocado and asparagus salad with yuzu honey dressing and crispy konbu; gindara no saikyo miso yaki – miso marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf; and the sake no teriyaki kyuri zoe- salmon teriyaki with pickled cucumber. If you’re tempted by a sweet treat to complete your meal, we highly recommend the chocolate fondant with specially-made vanilla ice-cream (the banana is also a must-try). The gooey chocolate centre combined with the cold, creamy bite of the ice-cream is simply heavenly. But don’t just take our word for it – book yourself a table and take pleasure in the Ruka experience .yourselves – you won’t be disappointed. OHLALA!

Pan Roasted Hammour with Summack & Coriander For this fast and full of flavour seafood preparation, brought to you by Chef Susy Massetti for Alosra, you can experiment with other local fish such as andack; faskar; subayti; gorgofan or sheem. Baby marrow coussa salad and some simple steamed rice are perfect to serve with this recipe. Method

Mix all spices, herbs and olive oil into a wet rub (except lemon juice and salt) into a small bowl. Coat the fish fillets with the mixture and let marinate for at least one hour or overnight. Place a skillet* over a high heat and add olive oil (you can avoid this by using a non-stick skillet). Lightly sprinkle the fish with salt, place on the very hot skillet and sear for two minutes. Turn over and sprinkle again with salt and lower the heat to medium-low. After two more minutes, add the lemon juice and the water. Cover the skillet and cook for eight minutes (or six if using thinner fish fillets) Turn the heat off and let the fish rest for four minutes before serving. *Instead of a skillet, you can place the prepared fillets in a pre-heated oven at 180C for eight minutes, or six if using thinner fish fillets.

Ingredients

4 pieces of hammour or other fish fillets (approx 200g each) 2 tbs summack 1 tsp garlic, finely chopped 1 tsp red chilli flakes or chopped green chillies (or as per taste) 25g fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped 2 tbs EV olive oil, for the marination 2 tbs EV olive oil, for cooking 2 tbs lemon juice 1/3 cup water Salt & pepper, to taste 64

The Lexus RC-F

We take a drive in Lexus’s answer to the BMW M4 – the RC-F coupe. It’s a 467hp 5.0l V8 muscle car combined with that famous Lexus luxury. Is it a successful combination? We find out…

W

e say that the RC-F is Lexus’s challenge to the BMW M4 because that’s the industry line – they’re in the same segment, and the motoring media is rife with direct comparisons, but we don’t think is necessarily fair. Yes, they’re both coupes and their power figures are comparable, but in reality, they’re two very different cars. 72

OHLALA!

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva Drives Whereas the M4 is a hard-edged, trackloving monster that you can still drive on the roads, Lexus have taken a very different route with the RC-F. It is much more of a forgiving, yet lively GT, calm and tranquil in highway cruising or city driving, but still ready to get lairy on a twisting mountain road. For these reasons, we’re happy to consider the RC-F on its own merits. And its merits are many – it has a beautiful, beefy V8 that purrs quietly at cruising speeds, but comes alive with a roar at about 6000rpm when you want to have some fun. It’s naturally aspirated, so those 471 horses are all there as soon as you touch the gas. In an age where so many are dropping their V8s for turbo-charged V6s, it’s nice to see someone still doing it old-school. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – there’s no replacement for displacement! Although, it does have to be said, that big V8 is thirsty. The eco mode does help a bit, but unless you want to drive like grandma pretty much all the time, expect to be filling the tank every couple of days. In second and third gears in Sport mode the power delivery is instant and brutal, like a dropkick in the back. On a hot run in Sport mode and manual along a twisting road, it was pretty much second and third all the way, and boy was it fun! I said forgiving previously, because no matter how hard I pushed it, it never felt like it was trying to get away from me – at all times I felt composed and in control, so it’s one of those cars that practically anyone can walk away from feeling like a hero. It has superb levels of grip, even for the relatively heavy coupe that it is (200kg heavier than the M4) thanks to the TVD (torque vectoring differential), which can be set to normal, track or slalom, and works like a charm. The RC-F boasts an eight-speed automatic gearbox, to try and improve that fuel economy, but this does have its drawbacks. In the Normal setting, the auto box seems to have some trouble deciding which gear to be in. In Sport auto mode, however, the RC-F gets it exactly right, holding the revs long enough in the corners and shifting down hard with a satisfying bark under heavy braking. The shifts are also extremely fast and smooth, almost unnoticeable when you’re just cruising along in normal driving conditions. Inside, the RC-F has its ups and downs. The centre console looks rather dated, and the whole dash doesn’t look as premium as it should www.ohlala-magazine.com

“I felt composed and in control, so it’s one of those cars that practically anyone can walk away from feeling like a hero.”

in a car like this, despite the noticeable high-end Mark Levinson Audio badge on the stereo. The seats, on the other hand, are perfection, with a comfortable, figure hugging design, and the in-seat aircon is always welcome in the Gulf. The rear seats don’t have much in the way of legroom, but are usable as long as the people in the front aren’t too tall. It’s far more than a 2+2 configuration that some coupes offer. Rear boot space is commendable as well, with a usable amount of room for luggage. I believe the RC-F is exactly what it should be – a luxurious GT that’s satisfying and usable as an everyday drive, but which has a hidden dark side that can be unleashed when you come across one of ‘those’ epic roads. It’s a little too big and heavy to be a true track-day car, but for everything else, fill your boots!

Petrolhead Pretty Our resident Diva Driver, Lisa Speed, is getting all excited about SUVs this month…

Ok, so I’ve had a couple of teaser releases come through this month that have me quite intrigued. Teaser releases are what (usually premium) car companies do to generate some hype ahead of a particularly big unveiling - usually an all-new model. They’ll send out some tantalisingly obscure partial shots of the model to get people curious and gossiping about what the car is going to actually look like. The crazy thing is, we usually already know because it’ll be largely similar to a concept that has already been unveiled at motor shows the year previous. This is most likely the case with the all-new Jaguar F-Pace, a new crossover SUV coming from Jaguar in 2015. It’s a development of the C-X17 concept we saw last year. The only picture they’ve actually released is of the badge (pictured here), but it’s a pretty safe bet to say that it won’t be far removed from the C-X17 (also pictured here). The C-X17 wasn’t too radical a design, and is instantly recognisable as a Jaguar, so expect much the same with a few design tweaks. It’ll be unveiled in 2015, and go on sale in 2016. The long-anticipated Bentley SUV, on the other hand, is a slightly different story. The concept, the EXP-9 F (pictured here), was unveiled way back in 2012, and set chins wagging mostly for the wrong reasons, mainly because it looked a little… well… vulgar? With a front end largely inspired by the Mulsanne, with those big single headlamps, it was the kind of car that would have appealed to people with lots of money, but zero taste. Rappers, footballers, etc. Happily, it looks like they’ve taken a completely different direction with the upcoming SUV. Again, only artsy teaser shots have been released, but we’ve also seen spy camera images of the heavily disguised production model (yes, pics right here), and the first thing we can notice is that they’ve dropped the Mulsannestyle single-lamp headlights for twin headlights as seen on the Continental and Flying Spur ranges. How the final product will look is still open to interpretation, but one thing’s for sure – it can only be an improvement! Speaking of Bentley, I just wanted to finish by saying that the awesome Continental GT3-R, the fastest Bentley ever made and inspired by the Continental GT3 racing car, has now finally hit the Gulf, with a launch at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina last month. If anyone, anywhere, can get me a go in that car, I will, in return, grant the ultimate of rewards – a date, with me, Lisa Speed. That’s right! A lunch date though. And no dessert. skedar Dubois has no doubt broken the glass ceiling as far as transformation and reinvention are concerned. This talented powerhouse is an actress, model, philanthropist, wife, mother and fashion fixture on the island. Esky, as she is more commonly known by, also adds successful entrepreneur to her impressive résumé. In this lovely little island, it’s easy to “know anyone and everyone” and Esky is definitely one of the exceptional figures who have surfaced and transformed themselves with a style befitting of a woman in power – with such grace, drive and determination. Esky is very passionate about her personal, professional and charitable involvements, so what she does is a juggling act not for the faint of heart. “With everything that I plan to do, 24 hours is not enough. I’ve always been busy with work, my community activities, social life, but I have learnt not to take things for granted, and give priority to my family. Just being around them relaxes me. My ultimate goal is to raise my kids in a proper manner and to see them grow into educated grownups with a successful career that would make a difference in people’s lives, and giving them a beautiful childhood, inspiring them and becoming part of their success,” Esky shares. The above is just one of the many hats she wears. Esky used her creative talents as an actress to star in the film, ‘Tikur Engda’ – a story about an Ethiopian girl adopted by a European couple as a child, who, in search for her identity, comes home to find her biological parents. “The film talks about facing the truth, obstacles, cultural differences, language barriers, love and more,” shares Esky. Launched in Bahrain (being Esky’s adopted 76

country), she played the girl as the main character. Through the film, Esky says she “wanted to share the experience with my friends and extended family here, then I launched it in August (last year) back home. It’s still showing in local cinemas.” The film has received such good response, so much so that the national carrier, Ethiopian Airlines decided to show the film in-flight since January this year. “It’s our national pride and honour to be selected amongst many films,” Esky enthuses. Tikur Engda was also nominated recently for several categories at the annual Ethiopian International Film Festival and voted by the audience in Addis Ababa as one of four best films of the year. As for her future creative pursuits, Esky plans to turn a script she’s wrote three years ago into a movie next year. “My husband encourages me to write down the things that I’ve done and accomplished.

But also, I quote the world’s greatest distance runner of all time, the Ethiopian athlete Haile Gebreselassie, who always say, ‘Nothing is impossible.’” If you think this lady is all work, you miss the most intriguing part of her: a huge heart. Most near and dear to that heart are the work she does for Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS) with Mona Almoayyed as patron and Marietta Dias as co-founder. Their aim is to help expatriate workers of all nationalities achieve their basic human rights in accordance with internationally recognised standards. A member since 2008, Esky was the Society’s former in-charge of its fundraising committee and she is current assistant head of action committee, an executive member as well as the leader of the Ethiopian community in Bahrain. “Before I joined MWPS I used to take the needy to my house until justice was served (if it was) or until they were deported to their countries. I have

“I believe that objection is an opportunity.” People around me are always touched by the experiences I have come across and they also encourage me to turn my diaries into a book. We shall see what the future holds,” she shares. Esky lives out the idea of ‘having it all’ on a daily basis – a sucessful career, a loving family and the opportunity to do something for the greater good. “I think as woman we need to stop believing that we have to work harder to be as good as men and focus on our capability to do the task given. “I believe that objection is an opportunity and this suits my professional activities perfectly.

been fortunate enough to be able to join MWPS and can now be the voice of the unheard. I know the importance of having a shelter for domestic workers who have nowhere else to go to and of being able to represent them when they need help. Through experience I have learned that even a simple thing like translating can save a life and make a difference!” Esky exclaims. For a lady whose life is a glamorous whirlwind, she is tireless in her plight for the less fortunate. We could all learn more than one lesson from Eskedar Dubois. www.ohlala-magazine.com

I want these young people to learn to pay it forward by helping those who feel hopeless find a renewed sense of purpose in life,” Fareed shares.

The Project is also seeking support from sponsors to ensure its success. For his part, Fareed has pledged the space for which the Centre is now located in Seef District. “There’s no criteria to get signed up to the program. This month is your month so make the most of it, especially if you have plans to travel or party! You may also find that several problems that have been dwelling on your mind of late will be resolved giving you the opportunity to focus on the things that really count. However, beware of family disputes that arise from idle words or perhaps even a jealous heart, which could dampen certain celebrations. If you know what I’m talking about then forewarned is fore armed so there should be no excuse for things getting out of hand. Any links with the colour blue or the number three will lead to an unexpected friendship being cemented late in the month and it could take you to some very interesting places. Overall, you need to look after number one here, especially because many of you will be celebrating birthdays! As I said, it’s your time.

Happy Birthday

Ms Aquarius

AQUARIUS -AT-A-GLANCE

People born under the sign of Aquarius are both strong and attractive and have quick minds, which make them perfect thinkers on both practical and abstract matters. They possess a good sense of humour and love to share a joke and lighten the atmosphere wherever they go. However it isn’t all about fun and they also have a strong interest in humanitarian activities. If there is someone out there talking up the way we can make the world a better place it is likely to be a person born under this sign. Aquarians are not very good with monotony and get bored very quickly, meaning they need to be constantly occupied. This can make them demanding partners as this attitude extends into relationships as well as work. They don’t like to have to rely on anyone and have a strong independent streak, especially where money is concerned. As friends and lovers they are loyal and if an Aquarian gives you their word you know you can count on them not to let you down. On the negative side they can be unpredictable and inconsistent on occasions and also very stubborn. They also have a tendency to appear aloof and are often loners, with a detached attitude if things don’t go their way.

Pisces

Your world is likely to be disrupted this coming month as pressures carried over from unresolved problems at the tail end of 2014 emerge to complicate matters further for you. The commitments that family members put upon you are not going help matters much and these will start to mount up and cause you concern by the middle of the month. It could well be that things will come to a head on the 26th and you may be required to keep your cool or risk a full-blown row developing. Someone will take pleasure in making matters worse so watch your back especially when around a blonde female who is not as loyal as she appears.

Aries

A lot of hard work and effort will finally be rewarded this month and you’ll be in a very buoyant mood throughout February, making you quite good fun to be around. You’ll also be fortunate to enjoy a very romantic Valentine’s Day and there could even be a trip away to www.ohlala-magazine.com

Giovanni unravels your destiny …

somewhere completely unexpected that will be thrust upon you at the last minute. On the family front, there’ll be a pleasant gathering that sees you enjoy yourself although it might not all unfold as you expect it to. Finally, a partner is going to need your support as he or she gets a promotion that consumes a lot of their time.

Taurus

You’re going to have a lot to celebrate this month, especially after the 19th when the successful conclusion to a project secures you both financially as well as raising your standing with a colleague. To say that this was unexpected would be untrue but the scale of what happens is going to take your breath away and make you realise that you have something really good going on in your life right now. Enjoy it, talk it up and accept all the accolades that come your way but then move on and chase the next challenge because there is still a lot more that you can achieve here.

Gemini

relationship then it is worth re-assessing the state it is in. Alternatively, if you are currently looking to begin a new relationship then tread carefully and do not rush in just to satisfy a desire.

Leo

You may be planning a trip away this month, perhaps to spend time with relatives abroad, but caution is advised if taking along small children. Watch the youngsters closely since a wandering infant may give you cause for concern. A rocky period at work could lie ahead and you are best to keep your head down and continue with your duties without paying too much attention to what is going on around you. As long as you perform all that is required of you, you’ll ride the storm without too much bother. If you have any objects of art or family heirlooms then now would be a good time to seek out a valuation.

virgo

Perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly love is in the air this month and it will take many guises and have many positive outcomes. Some of you will find new romance at work when a colleague takes a shine to you and you soon realise the feeling is mutual. For those of you already involved, a relationship could be about to move up to the next level when you are approached about making a more serious commitment. Think hard – you should know what you want as soon as the question is put to you. If you hesitate, then you already have your answer.

You’ve had a difficult time romantically of late and February with its heralding of Valentine’s Day may not be the most keenly welcomed time of the year but you have to just get through it because there are better things to come in the next few months. Part of your problem is that you haven’t really spoken to anyone about how you’re feeling and it would do you good to talk matters through with a friend or family member. On the money front, there’s a chance that you could come into some good fortune around the 12th and if you have some opportunity to buy some time away then you would be wise to take a holiday.

CANCER

LIBRA

A recent loss in the family is really only starting to emotionally hit you now and it has triggered off a change in your inner-self. You may find yourself reflecting on life and thinking about the purpose you have in it and maybe even decide to make a career change. Any role in volunteer or social work might prove temporarily satisfying but the real need you have is for emotional fulfilment. If you are in a

Although your general fortunes enjoyed a bit of an upturn last month, your mood could be more melancholy than usual and this could have a lot to do with your dissatisfaction with things on the work front. Those of you in a current position may be finding it all a little too dull and uninspiring and you should consider a change. Those of you looking for a new job may be frustrated by the lack of opportunities that have come your way but don’t

be surprised if an unplanned meeting on the 10th opens a career door you have never considered.

Scorpio

After a productive January, you could see yourself hit a bit of a creative “brick wall” this month. In part this could have something to do with an awkward exchange between you and a loved one that has left you a little unsettled. If you want to get yourself back on track then you need to consider putting the matter to bed by dealing with it once and for all. The implications extend far further than you might realise and if you let things drag on this month, then you might find others decide to take the initiative, which won’t help you at all in the long run. The way your future pans out is in your hands.

Sagittarius

Times may be tough out there for many of you this month but you are set to enjoy a fabulous return on a recent investment. Just remember to give a little to those closest to you, who supported and stood by you when times may haven’t been so good. On the health front, get those twinges in your lower back or thigh looked at sooner rather than later. The body rarely registers pain without a reason and this could be a wake-up call to warn you that physically you’re not doing something right. The doctor is waiting for that call.

Capricorn

A former partner is going to cause you a few financial worries as you head into February and you may be forced to seek legal advice if he or she does not adhere to their financial responsibilities. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind to get the issue dealt with but prepare for fireworks on the 15th when matters could come to a head. On the family front, responsibility for a planned party may end up in your lap when you discover that a sibling has pulled out because of a clash of personalities. On the work front, an interesting proposal on the 21st is worth considering. OHLALA!

Relationships

The Month for Love

Only this time a slightly different slant… Take a moment to reflect inwards and ask yourself, what kind of a relationship do you have with yourself?

Dallas-Shaw

Loving yourself holds the key to loving others and having others love you. So, stand up, close your eyes, hold your arms outstretched, palms facing upwards, take a deep breath in and check in with yourself, are all parts of you balanced and congruent, are you in total alignment? Is there a part of you that needs some attention? If so what does it need? Is there a part of you that is constantly sabotaging yourself ? For instance when you make your New Year’s resolution to lose five kilos is there a part of you that is saying “Go on you can have that cheesecake or go on you can have that extra muffin?” If so, then one part is definitely out of alignment. Are all your parts working as a team? Recently I read a very inspiring book called ‘When I loved myself enough’ By Kim McMillan. This author checks in with her “Team” every morning and every night, saying Good Morning Team and then Good night Team at the end of the day. She goes on to say – “When I loved myself enough, I came to love being alone surrounded by silence awed by its spell, listening to inner space. A sense of Oneness, a sense of Ok-ness.” So when you look in the mirror in the morning give yourself a smile, a thumbs up, as there is no one else like you, you are unique.
