125 of Lanvin You’re invited on a journey through the times and trends of the oldest French fashion house still in business, founded by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889. Celebrate 125 years of LANVIN by revisiting its fascinating history…

Journey through fashion

In 1889, on the corner of rue Boissy d’Anglas and rue du Faubourg SaintHonoré, Jeanne Lanvin founded her fashion house. Eight years later, her only daughter Marguerite Marie Blanche was born, and soon became her muse and main source of inspiration. Delighted with motherhood, the businesswoman had a brilliant new business idea: children’s wear. Little by little, she designed a wonderful wardrobe for Marguerite. Jeanne Lanvin had just invented children’s fashion. The shop’s customers, the mothers of the little girls who were in the same private class, fell instantly in love with the designs, asking Jeanne Lanvin to make the same outfits for their own children. Amid the excitement of the orders placed by her customers for their own daughters, Jeanne Lanvin opened a ‘Children’s Suits’ department in 1908. A year later, she opened the ‘Young Ladies and Women’s’ departments. Jeanne Lanvin joined the Syndicat de la Couture, the designers’ union, and entered into the very closed world of French Fashion Houses.

Blake Lively

Actress Blake Lively is a floral vision in this beautiful Oscar de la Renta gown from the brand’s Spring-Summer 2014 collection. Blake attended the 2013 A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s event in New York City, looking fabulously feminine in this off-shoulder, A-line ensemble – a fresh change from her usual slinky outfits. She gets the look down to a tee with her sun-kissed complexion and a glossy down-do swept back off her face. More akin to older ladies, Blake works the floral gown bringing it up-todate by wearing an extreme pink necklace and a pair of very pointed snakeskin nude Louboutins.

Emma Watson

The young actress, Emma Watson, looks stunning at the premiere of Gravity in New York City in a white J Mendel dress from the designer’s Spring-Summer 2014 collection. This chic and sophisticated number is super simple but has a lot of style. The British star shined in this silk gazaar off-the-shoulder dress, pairing the look with Manolo Blahnik for J Mendel ‘Shela’ patent metallic booties. Emma elevates her look with her makeup and accessories. We are loving her berry lips and metallic shoes. The lips add a pop of colour, whilst the shoes give her clean look a little edge.

Nicole Richie Nicole Richie is seen here attending the Second Annual Baby2Baby Gala wearing a white crop top with floral embroidery and a multicolour striped skirt from the Spring-Summer 2014 collection by Alberta Ferretti. The actress and entrepreneur stood out from the pack with her embrace of this carefree collection’s more folkloric side of fashion. This bold statement could have easily overwhelmed Nicole’s petite frame, so she accounted for the complexity of her look by simplifying her styling, only wearing a few stacks of rings and a black clutch. Her less-is-more approach is also evident in her hairstyle, which was slicked back into a low ‘do, and her barelythere, nude-toned makeup. www.ohlala-magazine.com

A tradition of excellence

Ohlala! sat down with Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the man behind Chopard, to talk about timepieces, the Middle East and of course, his vintage car collection. 26

OHLALA!

www.ohlala-magazine.com

A

favourite amongst Hollywood celebrities, Chopard is not only famous as the jeweller to the stars, but also as the jeweller to Royalty, and that includes those from our region. Their presence in the Middle East dates back almost 50 years, and the brand has since built a bevy of clientele who only go to the Swiss luxury jeweller when it’s glamour they’re looking for. Founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard, the Swiss watchmaker brought the blend of artistry and functionality to beautiful timepieces, and soon had Chopard’s watches gain a solid reputation among enthusiasts and buyers on an international base. In 1963 the luxury brand changed hands when Karl Scheufele, descendant of a dynasty of watchmakers and jewellers from Pforzheim, Germany, bought Chopard. Since, under the driving force of the Scheufele family, Chopard has experienced spectacular development, becoming world renowned for its creativity, its state-of-the-art technology and the excellence of its craftsmen. Nowadays Chopard is pursuing a time-honoured family tradition, producing spectacular timepieces and stunning jewellery. Today standing behind the controls of the house is Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the copresident of Chopard, who has proven time and again just how much he reveres classic watch-making and sharing his passion with this side of the world. “I remember the first

time my father came to the region, it was about 45 years ago,” says Scheufele, “Now we have over 70 points of sale with our top markets being Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait.” The brand has noticed that two of their lines have grown to become the most popular - the quintessence of style and elegance, the Imperial line has proven a favourite amongst the ladies, while the Classic Racing line has quite a large male following. Scheufele says: “Our clients are always looking for something interesting, new and different so it’s challenging for us and we like it. They are quite the sophisticated buyer.” And to please such a buyer the Swiss brand offers their services to create bespoke pieces, giving clients the chance to create their own visions while still sticking to the DNA of the brand. These days in the Middle East the brand has found itself up against quite a few competitors, but as Scheufele put it “Competition is great, it makes you strive to be better.” And we couldn’t agree more.

Having moved up the luxury ladder, Chopard now stands at the top - leaders of their market. More than fifty years after his father Karl Scheufele purchased Chopard, the family tradition at the Swiss manufacture is stronger than ever with collectors and those interested in watchmaking turning to them for the best timepieces. A collector himself of watches as well as antiques, Scheufele has managed to find himself an even bigger, pricier, hobby. “I collect and race classic cars,” he says with a sly smile, “I’ve lost track of how many cars I have now, even my wife doesn’t know about quite a few of them – I think though that’s for the best.” The avid collector also belongs to both the Aston Martin and Bentley club, and prefers classic cars more than modern cars. And with such fervour, it’s not difficult to see that for KarlFriedrich Scheufele, haute horlogerie is in his blood, where he has brought passion and a collector’s eye to Chopard. OHLALA!

The stunning and gifted fashion designer Khaleda Rajab is local, homegrown talent who has shot to international stardom. Kirsty Edwards-Harris chats with Khaleda about her outrageous sense of style and life in the limelight.

h

ow did style feature as part of your life as a little girl? Khaleda Rajab. I’m surrounded by fashion in my everyday life; I grew up knowing I would end up being a part of the fashion industry. Apparently, I was addicted to fashion from a very young age. My mum had numerous stories to tell on how unique my outfits had to be from other kids. I used have a suitcase full of clothes instead of toys and I would just play dress up (Khaleda laughs).

Which celebrity/style icon would you most like to design a one-off piece for? KR. Elisabetta Canalis, Hofit Golan, Jessica Lowndes, Noelle Reno, Preeyas Kalidas, Jacqueline Fernandez and Joyce Bonelli. For the cat eye sunglasses, I’m crossing my fingers it’s a celebrity I love but can’t discuss it right now. You will find out soon… watch this space…

Tell us about your collaboration with Fahad Almarzouq… KR. It’s a fabulous one! We are now the most sold out

What’s your signature style? KR. My style is loud; it’s fierce. I’m seriously crazy with my everyday looks but know that’s what makes me and I would never change my personal sense of style. People may love it or hate it but it won’t break me! It’s all about having personal style and the guts to go with it – the major point is confidence! This you got to have it! That’s what makes a stylish woman stand out from a crowd.

Where do you hang out? KR. Well, I’m barely in Bahrain. I’m always on the go... being a fashion designer and working in the industry is seriously a busy lifestyle. There’s always something going on, especially since I distribute my own line of clothing all over the GCC and I’m also currently stocking in Europe. When I’m in Bahrain I really enjoy catching up with family and friends. I mostly hang out at The Domain, Bahrain, as I’m their brand ambassador.

What can we expect from the SpringSummer 2014 fashion collection? KR. The 2014 collection will be very interesting. I’m

Our glasses are now carried as an art piece in contemporary art museums, so that tells you how outrageous they are. Can you explain the concept of the eclectic designs and your vision of ‘The Cat’s Eye’? KR. The concept of the shades was an exaggerated

cat eye – a recanted shape in the sunglasses family that is considered a classic. We basically added four lenses and exaggerated the size of the cat eye to make them actually give a real cat eye effect. The glasses are fierce and daring, so not everyone can pull them off, except if you’re daring with your everyday wardrobe. www.ohlala-magazine.com

eet Hassan Ali Abdullah, Ahmed Sheikh Ali and Ali Hassan. Hassan works as an assistant at People Services (Human Resources) Department; Ahmed is a general accountant at the Finance Department whilst Ali is an administrative assistant at the Engineering Department. For people with disabilities finding a job isn’t always easy, it’s even harder when people ‘see’ you have a disability. “When I go out for a job interview, I am confident because I know I am qualified and I can do the job. But… they just say, ‘We’ll call you.’ They never really say it to your face, but deep inside, I know that my disability is a barrier for them to hire me,” shares Ahmed. “But we work more than ‘normal’ people do, because I think we have a lot more to prove,” Hassan chimes in. “But we are very glad that society is now more accepting of people like us and we are grateful for Kempinski for having given us the chance to prove that we are capable.” Ali adds that, “Kempinski has seen past our disability and employed us because we are skilled and we work really hard.” As a responsible employer, Kempinski aims to promote equal opportunities, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, civil and marital status, pregnancy, or disability. Kempinski also promotes a safe and healthy working environment without discrimination. As companies such as Kempinski can attest, disabled workers can be a great asset. “These employees are eager to work and are very motivated,” Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre general manager Puneet Singh tells us. “These are the kind of people who contribute to the business and do a great job.” Because of this initiative, the hotel has recently received an important recognition from the Ministry of Social Development for promoting an inclusive working environment. The Ministry assists those with disabilities in obtaining and maintaining employment. Hiring people with disabilities creates a real win-win situation for companies. Read on as Ohlala! gets to meet some truly inspirational figures for this interview.

“Ability is not only in your body. More importantly, it is in your mind.”

“We are thankful to companies like Kempinski and we hope that this encourages more and more companies to become an equal opportunity employer. We have different types of programs at the Centre,” explains Nader. “Some are short-term – connecting people with the right job, and others provide longer-term help.” “It is our goal to assist people in finding jobs where they’ll be successful and happy,” Nader adds. “We also maintain relationships with employers to make sure everything is going well from their perspective.” Hassan, Ahmed and Ali are not only happy with where they are now. They all dream of doing bigger and greater things in the future. As Ahmed says, “Ability is not only in your body. Ali Al Mahmeed is a prolific sculptor and an inventive printmaker. A distinctive presence on the Bahrain arts scene, his work is at times playful, poignant and certainly moving. Ali is a grand master of the creative sublime. Words by KARINA LAZARRAGA, IMAGES by GEORGE MATHEW

34

OHLALA!

www.ohlala-magazine.com

With a career path that has seen him transcend from artisan to fine artist, Ali’s creative beginnings date back to his early childhood years. Watching his mother expertly create embroidery, Ali would sketch some designs for her, which she would then translate into beautiful pieces of work. Spanning over 30 years, he has carved out a career as an artist, eventually becoming one of the founding members of the distinguished Bahrain Arts Society, which was established back in 1983. With humour and poignancy, his evocative sculptures made out of brass, bronze or wood, both large and diminutive – explore nature, relationships, social transition and everything else that happens around him. Depictions of human figures, as well as his love and fascination for birds commonly feature in his work. His art revels in the joys and contradictions one finds in life. Ali’s vision however never has the harshness of social satire; instead, his work has an aura of mystery, and participates in the simplicity as well as complexity of whichever subject he explores. Ali’s printed works on the other hand manifest a language of ornamentation, a retrospective commentary on the world around him. He draws inspiration from personal circumstances, a poem, a song, another artist’s work – leading to a

huge collective and reflective body of work. As you peer in for a closer inspection, many small tales unfold within the big picture. Intensely detailed, Ali’s print masterpieces offer challenges as well as pure retinal pleasure. Ali is a consummate artist. He has been working consistently since the 1960s, first as an Arts Teacher from 1964 to 1982. Aside from helping establish the Bahrain Arts Society, which he is currently the president of, representing the society at cultural events and exhibitions in Bahrain and internationally. Ali is also the general commissioner for the Bahrain International Sculptures Symposium – establishing the First Bahrain International Sculpture Symposium in 2003 – seeing participation by artists from 15 countries. The bi-annual symposium continues and will be staged again sometime this year. Accolades and recognition abound for Ali – his sculptures and print works are displayed at the Bahrain National Museum, as well as at private collections not just in Bahrain but also in Kuwait, London, Beirut, Dubai, Finland, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Russia, France, Cyprus, Oman, Jordan and China. Ali’s creations brilliantly convey the trajectory of art – from the moment an idea forms, through to its final creation and enshrinement. This creative artist is a maestro – orchestrating small vignettes into large, yet intricate works.

“With humour and poignancy, his evocative sculptures… explore nature, relationships, social transition and everything else that happens around him.” For details email Ali Al Mahmeed on: almahmeed@hotmail.com or see more of his work at Hend Gallery in Muharraq (www.hendgallery.com)

ESCAPE From

CUBicle nation Leaving her corporate job in 2010, Rawia Beyhum went to New York City to do a course, resolving never to become an employee ever again. Ohlala’s Karina Lazarraga chats with this ambitious, driven and determined lady who has set out to redefine her role in the corporate, working world.

As a PR Consultant, what challenges does the role pose for you? PR holds the challenge of incorporating various components together, creating a PR campaign or activity that generates curiosity and word-ofmouth, getting a demanding and time-conscious audience engaged, sticking to the facts without over embellishing, finding the unique gem in the story that makes it strikingly memorable. I believe that the way to approach the field is in first assuming that PR holds a strong responsibility in developing people’s perceptions regarding a subject. The application should be ethical and must meet people’s needs. It’s a high point for me when I get the media calling in for information on a certain topic. I take glory in the fact that the activity behind the PR is truly engaging and one that the publishers and community benefit from. You are also the founder of TalentFreeFlow Ltd. (TFF). How and why did you establish the company? I have always had an interest in people’s strengths and how to uncover these, dispelling fears along their path to success. I see so many talents out there and am aware of so many hidden talents within each one of us. I also see that we sometimes lose sight of ourselves and have to make changes in our environment in order to enhance wanted skills and behaviours. Through High Performance Leadership Training (HPLT), TFF aims to be a catalyst for change, coaching individual or group talent towards their integrity as self-sustainable entrepreneurs, awakening their awareness of what 36

OHLALA!

each, individually or collectively, has to contribute to the world. Our unique process is known as the TFF Participatory Approach, an in-house developed philosophy and guided practice for combining together multiple disciplines in a spirit of teamwork, collaboration, inclusion and development, incorporating the skill-sets of various industry stakeholders and facilitating teams who learn from one another and collaborate easily and effectively. TFF envisions on-going PR-savvy performances and showcase events promoting TFF Talents, supported and guided through our services in HPLT with globally recognised leadership qualifications (where applicable), work opportunity on various projects managed via TFF, and with high-profile visibility on www. talentfreeflow.com. What is your philosophy in life? I follow my personal motto: ‘Keep on keeping on.’ Why Bahrain? Bahrain has afforded me a playground to launch TFF. The people of Bahrain have always been supportive and conscientious leaders ideally suited for the TFF pursuit for Integrating Cultures and for facilitating change and innovation. nown for her exceptional musical talents, for being discovered by and then married to the famous British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and more recently for spending ÂŁ20million on a proposed trip into space, Sarah is nothing short of exceptional. Brightman, who began her career as a member of the dance troupe Hot, made her jump to stardom with her West End musical theatre debut in Cats. She went on to star in several West End and Broadway musicals, including The Phantom of the Opera. After retiring from the stage she resumed her music career with former Enigma producer Frank Peterson, but this time as a classical crossover artist. Brightman is often credited as the creator of this genre and is considered among the most famous performers, with

worldwide sales of more than 30 million records. Now, on top of her success on stage and her upcoming space mission, Sarah has recently been nominated as a UNESCO Artist for Peace. She says: “It was a wonderful thing, I felt experienced as a person at the age that I am so I felt that this was something that I could fulfil. We are chosen as artists because we travel around the world and are constantly in the public eye, so we can help spread the name of UNESCO, and highlight its work.” She adds: “This has been interesting for me because by travelling to space I am also hoping that I can bring focus to areas of the earth that I will see from that perspective, such as deforestation, plastic pollution in the ocean, and war zones. It’ll be an eye-opener and reminder to people of what is happening on our planet.” So why the focus on space travel and where does it come from? “I grew up in the 1960s and it was a time when everyone was talking about space exploration. Physicists were very relevant at that time, and I started to get interested in how many women were working in this area. I realised that they still make up a small percentage in the sciences in general so I set up various funds to help women who are studying these subjects to further their education.” Sarah’s passion for music and love of the outer hemisphere and the physics of life are seen clearly on her Dreamchaser album cover with its huge amazing sky-like star-covered backdrop. Sarah speaks about working with the composer Mike Hedges and the violinist and cellist Sally Herbet on the album Dreamchaser.

“I’ve known Mike since I was 18, but this is the first album that I’ve collaborated with him. I was interested to see what would happen because I knew that his experience as an engineer and a producer would be good in helping me create the right soundscape and to bring all these pieces from different times and genres together.” Sarah describes herself and Mike as similar, both having a “gothic” and a “spiritual” soul. She says: “As soon as we started working I knew that this would be a challenging but very good journey that we would take together, and it has been.” Sarah also gives credit to Sally Herbet who she says: “works very well with classical musicians in creating wonderful arrangement – as well as understanding totally the rock and pop world that we are often working within.” Dreamchaser, which many critics consider to be Brightman’s strongest work to date, reached No. 1 on the Classical Crossover Albums chart making it the seventh album for the world renowned soprano to reach this chart.

“Mike has a gothic soul and a spiritual soul and so have I so I knew that we would work well together.”

Alice Temperley. I have always loved creating, from a very, very young age. I was always making things, I was fascinated by patterns, sewing, painting, cutting things up to make textile pieces or clothing - I remember being in trouble for constantly breaking my mother’s sewing machine. I had a real urge to create and would spend hours drawing and making things that I would sometimes sell at local village shops. You’re known to be a fan of The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Why do you think she chooses Temperley London? What is it you admire about her? AT. We are very honoured that the Duchess of Cambridge chooses to wear our clothes; in fact I am honoured when any woman chooses to wear Temperley when there is so much to choose from out there. She is a great ambassador for Britain. What other celebrities, past or present, would you like to dress and why? AT. Marion Cotillard, her acting in La Vie en Rose was an inspiration. Are there any style icons, past or present, who you admire and why? AT. Coco Chanel - exceptional on all levels. www.ohlala-magazine.com

In your opinion, what’s the key to ‘making it’ in the fashion world? AT. Work ethic - you have to truly love and have a passion for what you are doing. The fashion industry is tough; I live by the motto…‘be focused, strong and keep calm and carry on.’ What is the signature of your style? AT. I aim to create timeless, feminine, sensual designs with an ethereal spirit. Clothing that makes the wearer look and feel beautiful, the best version of themselves. I like to think of it as effortless luxury - focus on detail and fabrics. Dresses memories are made in. I aim to create designs that are simultaneously relaxed and formal. You want to look like it comes effortlessly and easily. Who is the Temperley woman?

“You have to truly love and have a passion for what you are doing. The fashion industry is tough; I live by the motto…‘be focused, strong and keep calm and carry on.”

AT. She is someone who is independent, strong, appreciates her femininity and pays attention to detail and appreciates timeless pieces. Where would she wear your creations? AT. Everywhere! She has a zest for life and likes to enjoy her clothes. How do you manage to be unique while still staying true to the heart of the brand in the fast-paced world of fashion? AT. We are a British brand and I am incredibly proud of that. I like to think that British design is a bi-word for quality and craftsmanship and I think British designers exhibit an eclectic way of mixing influences. Incredible craftsmanship in timeless pieces with historical references is what keeps us true to our heritage and also makes us unique. Get the Look Smouldering Date-Night Look

‘Girls’ star Allison Williams looks classic, sophisticated and trendy on the red carpet at the recent Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California. She provides the perfect inspiration for your Valentine date with her chic makeup, which was perfectly complemented by her edgy Alexander McQueen gown. Here’s how you can steal her look.

1. Achieve that healthy glow by first applying illuminating foundation to create a good base. 2. For this look, start by grooming the brows with a brow definer. 3. Next, create a classic smokey eye using a blue and black eyeshadow quad palette. 4. Get Allison’s dramatic eyes by applying liquid black eyeliner followed by fine-glitter silver shadow done all the way around too. 5. Finish the eye makeup by applying black mascara on the top and bottom lashes. 6. Go easy on the cheeks by applying just a touch of colour with a shade of peach cream blush, on the apples of the cheeks. 7. Top off the look by putting on a moisturising lipstick in a similar hue. 58

Karyn Khoury

Senior Vice President, Corporate Fragrance Development Worldwide, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. What is a Modern Muse? Throughout history, Muses were the goddesses of inspiration in poetry, literature, music and the arts. More recent Muses continue to inspire art, fashion and style. A Modern Muse embodies the intriguing duality of today’s woman - soft and feminine yet strong and dynamic, all at the same time. She’s the woman who inspires with a contagious, natural magnetism, which speaks to others without saying a word. Her presence, in fact the very thought of her, draws people in and motivates them to greater creativity and achievement. Tell us more about the fragrance’s “dualimpression” construction? Because Modern Muse was inspired by the complexity of a modern woman, its construction reflects the same dynamic tension as her life and her personality. People generally think of tension as a negative word, yet in the world of art, including the art of fragrance creation, creative tension can be a great source of inspiration – the influence of two seemingly contradictory qualities leading to new heights of creativity and emotional resonance. This response to dynamic tension is also something every woman lives, as she balances energy and softness with strength and focus in order to manage the many, often conflicting demands in her life.

Harry Frémont Master Perfumer, Firmenich

How is Modern Muse a “dual impression” fragrance and what makes this unique? How you connect emotionally with a fragrance can be different from one person to another. I like to say that this is a “dual impression” fragrance because one woman may fall in love with its lush floral dewiness, while another woman may experience the woody, musky aspect first. Someone might connect right away with its sparkling floral quality, while another may be attracted to its warm, rich woody signature. Modern Muse celebrates this creative tension between the florals and the woods. It’s what makes the fragrance interesting and intriguing. 62

How does the fragrance make you feel? Modern Muse makes me feel elevated - like a better version of me. Who do you think of as iconic muses? I think Joan of Arc is iconic. She was a woman who maintained her femininity but was strong enough to lead an army of men into battle. All the models before me as muses, particularly Carolyn Murphy. She has been in the industry for so long and has had such a long career with Estée Lauder. I find that really inspiring. And Angelina Jolie. She is beautiful, talented, she protects her children which, as a mother, is so important for me, and she gives so much back. Who are your own personal muses? I’d say my personal muses are my friends and my mum! Who inspires you? The person I find most inspiring is my son. And mothers around the world. We all have a mother and they always have the best advice and do so much for

everyone else. They are very inspiring. How do you juggle single motherhood and modeling? It is really hard. You have to find a balance. I like to take Nikko with me when I can. Motherhood has brought so much to my life and I wouldn’t change anything. But sometimes it is challenging and I am lucky to have great support from family and friends. What is your favourite thing about motherhood? Watching my son grow and hearing how he thinks. Bedtime is my favourite time with him because it is the only time during the day that he is still! I love listening to what he talks about. Best advice from your mother Always be kind and understanding of others. Best beauty advice from your mother Don’t pluck your eyebrows! You are famous for your eyebrows. Any tips? I fill in the gaps with a pencil. I love the Estée Lauder Automatic Brow Pencil Duo. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva Drives Ferrari FF

Ohlala! was lucky to receive an invitation to attend yet another electrifying Ferrari event at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi – this time to experience the charming Ferrari FF. What a car, and not only charming, it is incredibly powerful and amazingly fast! Words by Sari Mabire

64

OHLALA!

i

t has been a while since my last review but when Ferrari calls I’ll follow! I have to confess – as some of you might remember from before – that I am biased towards Italian sports cars. They have that elegant and sexy attractiveness and pull that most other cars just can’t emulate. The name FF is inspired by the car’s four generous, body-hugging seats and, more significantly, the new Ferrari-patented fourwheel drive system. This makes the FF the most versatile of all Ferraris; you can drive it anywhere, in any weather or road conditions. Ferrari says that it has been designed specifically to tackle the toughest, most complex and ambitious of driving challenges, including snow, not that we have to worry about that in the GCC. As for the interior, it really is a proper four-seater and even tall people can sit on the rear seats comfortably without having to be contortionists. The FF also sets a new benchmark in terms of absolutely unprecedented cabin and luggage space for www.ohlala-magazine.com

a car in its category. Perhaps another name for this car could be Family Ferrari, as the boot is spacious enough to accommodate pushchairs and family shopping! I started off the day with an introduction to the FF by a Ferrari Corse Pilota instructor, who showed me the entire car explaining the details. Beautiful car it is, inside and outside, modern, elegant and muscular at the same time, but you wouldn’t expect anything less of a Ferrari, would you? The interior is swathed in sublimely luxurious leather with chic and sophisticated trims and detailing, creating an impression of comfort and refined exclusivity. Next in turn was a theoretical lesson on how to best drive the car. I had of course done this before but it’s always good to get a refresher from a professional. I’m happy to say that I remembered the previous lesson pretty well and had even applied some of the techniques to my daily driving. (I just wish I was driving a Ferrari every day…) Next was an exhilarating spin around the circuit by the Corse Pilota, who really knows how The wonderful thing about the FF is that it is as much a car for day-to-day driving with the family or friends, as it is for extraordinarily exclusive occasions, which demand an exotic car. You can drive easily and relaxed, or really push it to the limits.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

to demonstrate the absolutely awesome power, acceleration and speed delivery of the 6.3-litre V12 engine, with a whopping 651 horsepower. The FF has a top speed of 335km per hour and dashes from zero to 100-km per hour in just 3.7-seconds. Ferrari states that the FF is the world’s most powerful fourseater car, and who am I to argue that? Then the moment I had been waiting for came – time to get behind the wheel. Instead of driving on the circuit I was asked to take it out on the public roads to see how it is in the real world and I happily complied. The FF is a four-seater GT but drives like a dedicated two-seater sports car. It thrills on straight roads nearly as much as it does on curvaceous ones, as the V12’s wail rises and falls while you swiftly boom through the short-spaced gears. And as is usual for Ferraris, it turns heads on the road and opens the fast lane. The FF manages to be both practical and exotic at the same time, an accomplishment not so easy to achieve. It’s superbly comfortable to drive with amazing poise and capability. The wonderful thing about the FF is that it is as much a car for day-to-day driving with the family or friends, as it is for extraordinarily exclusive occasions, which demand an exotic car. You can drive easily and relaxed, or really push it to the limits. It is a car for all occasions, a car that dreams are made of. Can I have one please… OHLALA!

Happy Birthday

Pisces

There’s a lot going on in your world at the moment and much of it is linked to health matters that have dominated your life for the last few months. The good news is that things are progressing and you will soon find the cure to your problem, although it will involve some time in surgery. However, once completed this will finally put the issue to rest and you can then concentrate on more important matters. Those of you who are looking forward to a romantic date may find February 15 more important that Valentine’s Day itself, so don’t lose heart if nothing happens immediately. It will be more rewarding when it does come.

Famous Aquarians Justin Timberlake Jennifer Aniston Abraham Lincoln Cristiano Ronaldo Alicia Keys Christian Bale Ashton Kutcher John Travolta Oprah Winfrey Clark Gable

Ms Aquarius

Giovanni reveals your destiny … Libra

Sometimes life can be a bit of an uphill struggle and very often we forget about the good times that make it all worthwhile when we are embroiled in problems that overshadow everything else – no matter how trivial they may seem. February could turn out to be one of those months when things won’t quite go to plan and you might start feeling there is a higher purpose at work, conspiring against your ambitions. Should the moment arrive, clear your head, take a deep breath and focus on the positive; you have a lot going for you, you just need to be reminded of the fact.

Aries

You’ve been through one of the most difficult times in your life over the last few months but fortunately much of that is finally over and as you move into 2014 you will be a much more relaxed person, better able to enjoy the fruits of your endeavours. This month will also see a return to more romantic themes for many of you and a loved one will demonstrate his or her commitment to you in an unexpected and surprising way. On the career front you should also look to re-evaluate your plans and ambitions because whilst 2013 was all about consolidation, this year is about expansion and development.

Taurus

February is going to be a month when you start to appreciate what it is you have achieved and how you should start to focus for the months ahead to reward you in the best way possible. There is a lot of promise and potential in your world and when you start to let the momentum of your ambition drive you, then you will soon discover that anything is possible. This is a good month for you Taurus, so use what it offers wisely!

Gemini

If you feel lucky and in the mood to take a chance then go with your instincts and gamble on whatever opportunity comes your way this month. The seeds you plant now will take root and offer growth and stability for the future, so ignore the disjointed advice of a friend who may not have your best interests at heart. Your sign is not averse to taking a chance, so fear of the unexpected shouldn’t be a factor. The only challenge is going to be convincing those closest to you that your plans are achievable and if anyone can make them happen it’s going to be you!

Cancer

The well-ordered structure of your life is about to be severely disrupted this month as you battle to come to terms with the consequences of your own impetuous actions from the last few weeks. A relationship that has recently come to an end will still be www.ohlala-magazine.com

Scorpio

Aquarius

It’s often a subject of irony to find the time of Aquarius, a sign traditionally more associated with matters mental than emotional, shouldering Valentine’s Day. However, what is often forgotten about your sign is its enormous capacity to need love, understand love and demonstrate love. But this is something you’re only prepared to show someone who means a great deal to you. This month, whilst many of you will be celebrating birthdays, a large number will also be celebrating Valentine’s Day alone, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Love doesn’t conform to convention and you will discover it again this year, just not when everyone else will be looking for it.

Aquarius At A Glance

Aquarians are usually friendly and humanitarian, and are honest, loyal, original and inventive. Often fiercely independent and intellectually inclined, with strong, attractive personalities; this sign falls into two principal types – the shy, sensitive, patient kind and the exuberant, lively, exhibitionist type. Both are humane, frank, serious-minded and practical and but also of a philosophical, spiritual vent. They do like the company of others but they also need space to find themselves and are equally at home in their own skin.

dominating your thoughts and you may be kicking yourself for not having dealt with a difficult matter in a more sensible fashion. The only thing you can do now is to move forward in the hope that things will improve over the coming months. The signs are good so long as you remain optimistic.

Leo

Business plans are going to get into full swing this month as you seek to take a new venture forward onto the next level, with some very positive results. A friend may also offer to help you out and his or her involvement will spur you on even more, so that by the end of the month you may be a lot further along than you had first believed possible. It’s set to be a hectic but fun time for you but in all of the turmoil you may find that a partnership suffers slightly. In fact it could be some time before you can enjoy a normal relationship of any kind, so you should perhaps make that fact clear to a current partner now.

Virgo

A wealthy lady of influence with whom you have a long history will return to you after a considerable time abroad and she may bring good fortune and equally good prospects to your life at a time when you might be feeling particularly low. It could be that a general apathy falls over you this month and the only way out is for the woman in question to help you rediscover the inspiration that used to fire you so potently in the past. Find the key and the rewards – financially and more importantly emotionally, will be vast. A dinner event on the 23rd will see a commitment made that could raise your profile at work!

You need to be cautious in two areas this month – finance and romance – because February could end up being a rocky time for you as far as these two subjects are concerned. On the relationship front you need to restrain yourself when it comes to a new partnership that has sprung up because you are best advised to take things slowly. You cannot rush matters of the heart and that has perhaps been the root of many problems for you in the past. You have been unable to contain your excitement and this has forced things to run out of steam because past romances have been choked by your enthusiasm for something more permanent.

Sagittarius

Oh what a monetary mess you’ve got yourself into. It seems that you have difficulty deciding who you want to be and what you want from life so now there is a general feeling that you have run up these significant debts out of unhappiness with your current state of mind more than anything else. Still, for those of you who want to make amends, there is plenty of opportunity for you to reach a solution, so try and look on the bright side.

Capricorn

A destructive force enters your life this month in the shape of a disgruntled relative who appears to have decided you are to blame for a long-running feud in the family. Try not to rise to their bait and put the record straight as soon as possible since your best option here is tackling the problem head-on... Curb the cutting tongue rather than encourage it or you may end up the victim of this unruly person’s intentions. On the financial side, tighten your money belt, as there could be a hefty expense coming your way around the 17th. OHLALA!

Love’s illusions

Contemplating the illusions of perception, Ohlala!’s resident philosopher Sophie, offers her interpretations of reality…

Love is perceived as a universal concept, its abstractness is created by a wide variety of words, thoughts, actions and experiences. Love can be observed as multiple moments of beautiful loving creation overlapping each other and building upon one another. The person we fancy from our own perception becomes more beautiful and kind as we spend more thoughts on them. Every encounter, whether personally or in imagination, we see something beautiful and if not, we beautify it, we create beauty where others see it not, because it is our own personal creation that gives us pleasure. It is not what others see that is important, it is what you see. Imagine a deck of cards, where each card resembles a certain abstract of love, and when we meet someone we place a card of love, related thought and/ or experience on the table. The table resembles “Love can be observed the realm of openness; as multiple moments of sometimes the cards are beautiful loving creation…” open to be seen by the

other party to whom the love is directed, at other times the card is placed on the table face-side down in secrecy, with the feeling of love present but unanswered. Love is built, a cognitive construct that we give life too, nurture and express, we observe, notice the kind smiles, the tender touches, the humour or whatever builds up our fancy that creates our perception of love, and ignore the snoring, the grumpiness, the beer belly and see it as being cute. We are focused on love and placing loving cards on the table with only one purpose, expanding our creation of love, experiencing the feeling of love, and wanting to embrace it even more.
