Fashion Frenzy “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” - Marilyn Monroe Jimmy Choo
From stunning catwalk looks and luxurious pieces, to the hottest trends and best high-street buys, our March edition is packed full of chic style inspiration. So get ready to put away your cold-weather clothes and update your wardrobes ladies, as we say au revoir to winter and hellooooo spring! Our Haute Couture runway report tells a tale of extremes, as designers surpass boundaries with their limitless creations, from black-wearing bipolar brides to otherworldly gypsy embroidery. Fashionistas will adore the ‘how to’ style guide to some of our favourite trends this season – from unleashing your wild side to lessons in layering. Further your fashion fix with our soiree with the stars, as we show you how to get red carpet ready. The Middle East is awash with talent, especially artistic fashion designers. This month we feature Lamya Abedin, with her fashion brand Queen of Spades, and abayas fit for royalty. It’s common knowledge that a girl can never have too many pairs of shoes… And this is most certainly the belief of shoe designer Lucy Choi. Niece of the infamous Jimmy Choo, she offers classic footwear with a twist. We “rock ‘n’ royal” with this chic lady in Celebrity Scoop. Lastly, but certainly not least, with International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day falling in the same month, we offer a nod to all women worldwide. Saluting extraordinary figures, whether forging ahead in the business world, championing charitable causes or furthering spiritual advancement, as well as recognising the impact we as mothers have on the future of our world. Remember to give thanks and acknowledge the power this has on your life and on those around you.

“This sophisticated watch takes its name from the Latin word for feather, subtly hinting at the delicate design that accentuates its most striking element
The elegant yet understated design of this OMEGA watch is distinguished by the state-of-the-industry timepieces that combine innovation with style.
This Constellation Pluma is presented on a bracelet with brushed stainless steel links and polished 18K red gold bars. The OMEGA CoAxial calibre 8520 at its heart is visible through a domed scratch-resistant caseback and the precision and reliability of this mechanical movement is such that the timepiece is offered with a full four-year warranty.

Similar to its sisters, this 27 mm timepiece is decorated with 11 diamond indexes in 18K gold holders and a soft-wavy pattern that flows between the iconic claws on the bezel.
This evocative interpretation of the Constellation Pluma whose light coral-coloured dial is reminiscent of warm sunshine, is the perfect way to ease into springtime.
Its polished and facetted central hour, minute and seconds hands are crafted from 18K gold and coated with white SuperLumiNova, so the time can be read in a variety of lighting conditions. The 18K red gold bezel is paved with 32 full-cut diamonds, adding to the overall style of this piece. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Crafted from 18k yellow, rose and white gold, and set with diamonds and colored gemstones, the ‘Flower of Eternity’ collection ranges from simple pendants to ornate four-piece sets. The result is a selection of iconic pieces perfect for every mood from daytime chic to the most dazzling evening sophistication.
For more than a century the Mouawad family has produced stunning, bejeweled masterpieces destined for royalty, celebrities and luxury lovers around the world. The Flower of Eternity collection continues this tradition of passion for excellence through a stylish line of jewellery that exudes contemporary glamour.
One Flower Three
Hearts
Love, passion, fidelity… all this and much more were conveyed in centuries past through the gift of a single stem or bouquet. Each variety of flowers had a hidden meaning, adopted by
lovers as a secret language to send subtle messages via every bloom. The Flower of Eternity collection brings a contemporary take on this cherished tradition. Studied carefully, the flower emblem reveals its composition of heart shapes. The heart, chosen as a universally recognised emblem of love and passion, appears three times, a symbolic number representing the past, the present, and the future, denoting a promise of eternity.

Lamya
A pioneer for extravagant abayas
40
OHLALA!
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Style Insight As a self-taught designer, how were you able to break into the industry through trial and error? Was it hard to be taken seriously as a budding fashion designer? It all began in 2008 when I was searching for an abaya for myself and I couldn’t get my hands on a one-of-a-kind piece. My love for fashion, styling and creative design seemed to become my inner calling that urged me to explore my creative senses. So I decided to make abayas for myself. With my family’s support, encouragement from friends and compliments from my confidants, it made me who I am today. I am an ardent lover of fashion, styling, beauty, textile, culture and history. Today these are my biggest inspirations and my work is always a glorious representation of these interests. But my true belief is that a designer is someone who brings style into life, so I always look for ways of making the ‘everyday’ into the ‘extraordinary’ through my
designs. I have taken inspiration from near and far – from folk dancers of Mexico to the spring ceremonies of the Japanese cherry blossom season. And sometimes closer to home, I find myself intrigued by my son’s dinky car collections or my daughter’s bedtime stories. Tell us a little bit about the concept behind the name: Queen of Spades The name ‘Queen of Spades’ comes from my wish to treat every one of my clients like royalty; my abayas are fit for queens and the ‘spades’ symbolise the blackness of the abayas. They also have a modern and fantastical twist. How do you want women to feel when they wear your abayas? In a deck of cards, the Queen of Spades is regarded as the most powerful of them all. So as my brand name suggests, I make each every piece fit for a
queen. So when you are wearing a Queen of Spades abaya, it’s not just a fashion statement, but a garment that has been thoughtfully designed and proudly showcases a story that is glorified in the materials and weaves used to produce it. And above all, it’s the only abaya of its kind in existence, giving my clients an unrivalled feeling of uniqueness. Your spring/summer 2015 collection, The Enchanted Forest, fringes on the medieval with heavy embroidery and velvety fabrics. They could easily be used in a period drama. What took your designs to this fantasy world? My latest collection promises to take you on a fairy tale ride through the Enchanted Forest. Knights and kingdoms, love and nostalgia have become my biggest inspirations for this line. There are 75 unique creations that portray a feminine but edgy fashion fairy tale, reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Hoods, tunics, cloaks, surcoats,

capes and kirtles, gowns, chemises and headgears of yesteryear have been redefined for today’s feminine fashionistas. Favourites of the bygone era have become the mainstay of the Enchanted Forest Collection. This is in fact the first time you will see Queen of Spades abayas in these fashion avatars. The collection is dedicated to women who were born to rule. Today’s woman to me is a visionary and a seeker, who cherishes her past as she rides into the future. This collection is dedicated to these women - the powerful leader, the confident feminist, and the charming princess who spreads her magic wherever she goes. What kind of materials have you used? I’ve used lavish winter textures like tweeds and suedes, fur and wool juxtaposed with velvets, linen, organza, leather and cotton. You’ll see lots of mesh works, embossed jacquards, tassles and www.ohlala-magazine.com
lots of layering in the pieces. Deep plums, plush crimsons, emeralds, mint and forest greens, ochres and sunset oranges are smeared over the new collection of abayas, displaying a winter palette that is cool, bold, vibrant and intense. Patterns and shimmer, two Queen of Spades favourites, reappear in the latest collection in various forms. The sizzling winter abayas show off geometric shapes, stripes and florals in abundance. Jacquards, sequins, beads and brocade raise a toast to the glamourous diva. The collection is available in stores at Galeries Lafayette and Valleydez Boutiques, ready to surprise and enthral the fashion forward. Talk us through your meet with Guiliana Rancic, how did that come about? It all happened during her visit to Dubai for the inauguration of her first pop up store called G by
Giuliana. She was the first to get her hands on the Enchanted Forest Collection. Along with a specially monogrammed grey outfit customised, I created another sheer shawl hooded abaya with lace and sequin trims to suit her gorgeous personality. She was mesmerised by the sequin embellished abaya. Meeting her and her lovely husband, Bill, and telling me how much she loved the pieces and how happy she was to be packing them with her to take back home was indeed an honour. You’ve already wowed us with The Enchanted Forest collection. What are you planning for the next collection? I have forever been mesmerised by time, history, culture, and folklore and it will only continue for me – but with a trip across another time and continent. Keep tight for yet another trip in the Queen of Spades fashion time machine! OHLALA!

A girl can never have too many pairs of shoes… With a “rock and royal” mantra and philosophy to offer classic shoes with a twist and plenty of character, Lucy Choi is setting the standard in chic, high quality design. In the words of Marilyn Monroe, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.”

W
ith shoe royalty, Jimmy Choo, as her uncle and over a decade of experience working in the luxury shoe industry, it was only a matter of time before Lucy Choi decided to branch out on her own - and start designing the kind of footwear that women, including herself, are
excited to wear. The result is Lucy Choi London, a brand that encompasses luxury, style, on trend fashion and affordability. Lucy Choi worked at French Sole for ten years before launching her eponymous brand. From bow embellishments to standout leopard-print and glittered leather, pumps are her forte – you’ll find a heel height for every occasion. We caught up with Lucy to find out more about what makes the perfect shoe and how her family heritage has influenced the business. Your family obviously has an impressive heritage in the shoe industry – was there any question of you ever wanting to work in a different sector of the fashion industry or was it always going to be shoes for you? Lucy Choi. I actually began my career by spending eight years working in the IT financial, business world. I then joined French Sole in 2002 to help them to build the brand and grow the company both in the UK and internationally. I could have chosen an easier path to join the family business but decided that I wanted to work in the financial world first, before following my heart into the fashion world. I grew up watching my Uncle Jimmy making exquisite shoes and knew from early on that shoes are in my genes and I would eventually turn to shoe design. How much advice did your family give you when starting out on your own and what was the most helpful tip you were given? LC. We are a close family and have always been very supportive of each other. My uncle taught me the importance of craftsmanship, being creative and a strong work ethic. From him I learnt to work hard, be totally dedicated, tenacious and to live your dream! He also taught me that whatever you promise, you must deliver and be true to yourself. I apply this ethos to every element of my own business. Do you remember your first pair of shoes, or the first pair you desperately craved? LC. I remember getting my first pair of heels on my eighteenth birthday, it is a really special memory for me. I felt so grown up and glamorous as soon as I put them on, it was a magical moment. They were a simple pair of black glittery high heel pumps, both classic and sexy! Who or what inspired you when you were staring out in the industry (designers, celebrities, friends etc)? LC. I’ve been in the shoe industry for over ten years so I’ve seen many changes.
“Can a girl ever have too many shoes, I don’t think so!” I’m very lucky to have my uncle in my life, he inspires me with everything that he has built and is a mentor figure. I feel inspired living in London, one of the leading fashion capitals of world and free to be creative. Where do you start with a new design, the materials, the colour, shape etc? LC. The first stage to the creative process is always the mood boards, I find living in London is such an exciting, thriving city - walking around I do feel inspired. We have an internal brainstorm session at the beginning of every season where we share ideas, drawings and pictures, from this we can move on to the production. This brainstorm includes all members of our team, so that we can discuss customer feedback and also think about their needs and desires as a consumer. Do you have a favourite shoe from your latest collection? LC. It’s hard for me to pick just one but I really love my Canterbury heels, they are both elegant and edgy! I live in black so it’s nice to break it up with a different texture and colour. Who would you describe as the typical Lucy Choi customer, if there is one? LC. I’m not sure there is one archetypal Lucy Choi London customer and I like it that way. We create luxurious, affordable shoes for women of all ages and attitudes, from rock stars to royalty. Our customers tend to be savvy ladies who appreciate expert craftsmanship and comfort but don’t want to compromise on design. How many pairs of shoes do you currently own and do you have a favourite (of yours or another brands) LC. I don’t dare count… over 500! Can a girl ever have too many shoes, I don’t think so! I definitely go through phases of favourites depending on my mood or the occasion. At the moment I’m wearing my beloved Stirling boots but I’m looking forward to the weather changing so I can lose the tights and wear our new fabulous Cupid shoe. You have a lot of celebrity fans, but is there anyone famous (dead or alive) that you would love to see wearing one of your designs? LC. I would love to see Kate Middleton or Kate Moss wearing our shoes, they have very different individual styles but are both fashion icons and have such a following! They embody our “rock and royal” mantra and I always keep both women in mind when I’m designing my collection.

Beauty Insight
A Hint of Confidence Louise Turner has a real nose for smell. Her latest creation, Roberto Cavalli Paradiso, fuses elements from Italian landscapes and all the odours that come with it. She talks to Ohlala! about the creative process.
How did you sniff your way to become a perfumer? I tripped over perfumery - I had started my studies to become a dentist, and during university holidays I got a job at a local fragrance company whose factory was close to where my parents lived in Kent ,UK. It was my destiny as I fell in love with perfumery – this mix of art and science – I was so lucky then as I now realise that it’s very difficult to break into as there are very few opportunities. Over time do you feel like your sense of smell as only gotten better or perhaps a bit tired? The sense of smell develops the more you use it - so it has gotten better and better, but like everything I can have days where I’m tired and my sense of smell is not as precise as I would like! Where do you get your inspiration from? From many different places, but mainly from nature which is always a challenge to try and create something that smells as good as what Mother Nature does .. Presumably you’re always working because you smell all the time, right? Do you ever give your nose a rest? I sometimes wish I could turn my nose off but that is a rarity. It can be overstimulated at times; having said that, last year there was a fire outside of Paris (where I live) during the night and the odour of smoke and fumes woke me up so I’m happy that my sensitivity has an added value and not just as a perfumer!! You’ve previously worked on Roberto Cavalli perfumes. What kind of woman wears his perfumes? The Roberto Cavalli woman is someone who loves life and lives it to the full, who wants to be noticed, is self confident and sensual. 54

“I fell in love with perfumery – this mix of art and science – I was so luck then as I now realise that it’s very difficult to break into as there are very few opportunities.” What defines your new perfume, Paradiso? An interpretation of the Italian “joie de vivre”. What are the main ingredients? It’s built around the inspiration of Italian landscapes, so the top notes are bergamot and mandarine, the heart is wild jasmine as well as the key ingredient with bases notes of cypress, pin and pink laurel. What occasion would a woman wear this perfume? It’s a fragrance that can be worn for every occasion – be it day or night, out with friends or to a special event. What are your personal favourite scents? I wear Paradiso as I really like the smell of jasmine but I also like Mitsouko from Guerlain and I have a fragrance that is not sold yet whose odour is around the smells of tonka beans which I really indulge in. www.ohlala-magazine.com

5 Ways To Bouffant Your Hair Feeling a desire to channel your inner Farrah Fawcett? Here’s our guide to max up your locks without a trip to the salon.
Blow Dry Upside Down It’s not the most rocket science technique but it tends to get overlooked. Flip your hair and focus on blowing your roots. After blow drying, avoid heavy leave-in conditioners, shine serums and styling products that will just weigh your hair down after all your hard work.
Teasing It’s the ultimate nemesis technique for some. Backcombing is a love/hate situation because while it does the job, brushing your hair afterwards is pain like no other. But with longlasting and poof-giving results, the adage: no pain, no gain never rung so true.
Barbara palvin
Ditch the layers Once upon a time layers were all the rave. As texture giving as they are, layers thin out the hair. Keep to one blunt length as it gives the illusion of thicker hair – it will make a big difference in the strength and thickness in the long run.
Rose Byrne
Dry Shampoo You’ll be getting a two in one deal with dry shampoo because not only does it absorb the oil from your hair, it inadvertently packs on the volume. Just spray it all over your hair (for best results focus on your roots) and massage your head to get rid of the white powder residue. Baptiste is a sure-fire product. Available at Boots.
Bun for Bed You know when you wake up some mornings and your hair is randomly awesome and you don’t know why? Well now you can have guaranteed hair success every morning. After you’ve had your shower the night before, make sure to blow dry your hair immediately until it’s almost dry. Then just put it up in a tight bun (or as tight as you can sleep in) and go to bed. You’ll wake up looking like Diana Ross, but by breakfast it’ll have tamed to a cub’s mane and you’ll be good to go for the rest of the day.

COOKING OILS DECODED When it comes to using oils, people are bombarded with options. Each type of oil adds its own twist of flavour, but are you aware of the health benefits each type of oil contributes?
W
ith so many health benefits to reap, Alosra provides you with a vast range of options for using oils, heated or in their natural state. Head down to your nearest branch and purchase oils from all over the world, whether it is to capture that exquisite taste in the kitchen or for improving overall health.
oil for those looking to keep cholesterol levels low. Coconut oil is commonly used in
vegan and Asian cuisine, adding an explosion of flavour. One tablespoon of coconut oil contains 117 calories, 13.6 grams of fat and provides little to no vitamins. Health fanatics would run the other way, right? On the contrary, coconut oil has high amounts of medium-chain fatty acids, or triglycerides, that are hard for our bodies to convert into stored fat and easier to burn than long-chain fatty acids. It also keeps you fuller for long, which promotes weight loss. It is also known to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Olive oil, the most popular of the bunch, is a staple condiment in the Mediterranean diet. Most importantly, it is known to fight and help the prevention of various diseases, such as diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease and cancer. It helps decrease low blood pressure and has been associated with the prevention of strokes. Although there is no potion for immortality, olive oil does help keep the heart young by improving arterial function. Extra virgin olive oil possesses the highest health benefits, as the oil is derived from the first press of the olives, without the use of heat and

Almond oil has many benefits, whether applied to the skin and hair or consumed. For starters, it acts as a good makeup remover, helps you get rid of dandruff and keeps hair healthy and shiny, reduces dark circles and delays signs of aging. The BMW X5 xDrive 50i We take a drive in Lexus’s answer to the BMW M4 – the RC-F coupe. It’s a 467hp 5.0l V8 muscle car combined with that famous Lexus luxury. Is it a successful combination? We find out…
T
he X5 in any shape or form ticks a lot of boxes, offering that premium comfort and luxury of a Beemer with the added space of an SUV which makes it a superb family car. The xDrive 50i ticks that extra box for someone who wants true power and speed as well. The twin-turbo 4.4l V8 is a rumbling masterpiece, docile and refined under normal driving, but with all 405 horses coming alive with a roar when you want to move in a hurry. Ride comfort is, as you’d expect, excellent as well, but things do get predictably more bumpy when you engage the Sport or Sport+ drive modes. Even in Sport and Sport+, the X5 feels like a heavy SUV, but body roll is kept in check excellently, and the huge sports tyres that came with the M Performance package we were driving really keep you in shape under brisk cornering. The BMW iDrive interface just keeps getting better year after year. The 360 degree parking camera is the best we’ve seen in any brand so far, and the menu is much more user-friendly than earlier generations of the software, although the sheer choice of options is a little overwhelming. One thing that can be annoying about the BMW is the number of driver aids and warnings that seem to be constantly bonging and dinging at you for whatever reason. It can prove really intrusive to someone who just wants to enjoy the driving experience. Most irritating of these to us was the lane departure warning which vibrates the steering wheel whenever you go anywhere near a road marking. At first we thought there was something wrong with the steering, until we figured out how to disable it. Admittedly, almost all of these warnings (with the understandable exception of the legal speed warning) can be switched off, although again, this will take some exploring in the BMW’s myriad driver setting menus! Now let’s talk about the third row. Yes, there are two functioning seats, but to say that it’s a permanent solution isn’t realistic. The fact that they’ve managed to cleverly squeeze two more seats into a car of these proportions is impressive, especially as, when they’re folded away, 74

www.ohlala-magazine.com
Diva Drives
you wouldn’t even know they’re there. With the two back rows folded down you get a fully flat surface for storage. Design-wise, we give BMW 10/10. However, putting the seats up is fiddly, and climbing in and out of the third row is extremely awkward, and once in, very cramped. For large adults it would be out of the question! If you’re a family with four kids, this is not the seven-seater you’re looking for. For a family with two kids who sometimes needs the extra space when picking up extra sprogs from the football game, the additional seats will come in handy as emergency backups. The X5 xDrive 50i is an excellent all-round car for the family of four. The extra seats and many options for cargo space provide all the practicality you’d need, and the twin-turbo V8 provides enough excitement and thrills to make daddy feel better about having to give up his sporty coupe! www.ohlala-magazine.com

Petrolhead Pretty
Our resident Diva Driver, Lisa Speed, is once again all about the SUVs this month.
“But weren’t you all about the SUVs last month?” you ask? Well… yes, but in this region it’s hard not to be! My motoring review this month is an SUV, the impressive BMW X5 xDrive 50i, a gorgeous beast with a 402hp twinturbo 4.4l V8 that I thoroughly enjoyed. Everyone here just loves SUVs so much, and as a result the showrooms are just churning them out in all shapes and sizes! A particularly nice shape in a compact size is the MercedesBenz GLA 45 AMG we saw being launched in the region at the Qatar Motor Show last month. This sizzling little SUV boasts the same engine as the A 45 AMG, the world’s most powerful four-cylinder, so you know it’s going to be good, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it… Then, last month we also attended the launch of Lexus’s very first turbocharged car, the NX 200t, also a compact crossover SUV. I had a quick spin up and down Sheikh Zayed Road, and can tell you that it’s absolutely lovely to drive. I’ll be bringing a more comprehensive review on that at a later date. And some other world-shaking news – after 76
OHLALA!
I talked about Bentley announcing an SUV model, I can now say that British luxury rivals Rolls-Royce have gone ahead and officially announced that they’re launching an SUV as well! Called the Cullinan, only teaser images have been released so far (the ones you see online are guesswork by artists), but I will definitely keep you posted as more info comes out! Moving in a completely different direction, this region is ALSO very much about the supercars, and this tenuous link brings me to my most exciting news so far: the launch of a new
Ferrari! And what a beauty she is. This is the new Ferrari 488 GTB, the V8 successor to the 458. It boasts a similar shape to the 458, but as you can see the aerodynamics are much more extreme and exotic – just what a Ferrari should be! The 488 GTB boasts a derivative of the same turbocharged V8 engine I experience a while back during my trip to Tuscany to drive the Ferrari California (just thought I’d drop that in there!), and I can tell you, it’s a beauty! I will get my hands on this car if it kills me… www.ohlala-magazine.com

Big Business Talk Over a lifetime, Jawad Yousuf Al Hawaj has created the kind of well-rounded success most people dream of: a prominent businessman, a community leader, a husband, father and grandfather. His life is full, but more importantly to Jawad, his life is meaningful. WORDS BY KARINA LAZARRAGA
J
awad Yousuf Al Hawaj has three fundamentals of business success: integrity, building lasting relationships and a keen sense to keep ahead of the competition.” Yousuf A. Wahab Al Hawaj & Sons Co WLL has been in business for more than seven decades, starting in the retail and beauty industries. With Jawad at the helm as managing director – it has had enormous success. The firm currently employs over 1,000 staff. One of the most recognised businessmen in the kingdom, Jawad Yousuf also holds leadership roles in more than 15 other enterprises and institutions. Receiving numerous accolades from Bahrain and beyond, Jawad holds one of his prized recognitions as a recipient of the award for the Chevalier De La Legion D’Honour on June 18, 2013 presented by former French Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Christian Testot.
not just his employees – but also the local community, by taking part and donating in charitable undertakings. Embracing Change
The world is experiencing change at such a rapid pace, and in business, Jawad says, “You have to be strong and ready to accept change, and be one step ahead of your competition. “One must be proactive and assertive when faced with challenges that change brings about. To do this, you also need to be present, for your business to run smoothly. Your clients and partners need to know that you are always there for them,” he adds. Integrity: His Greatest Asset
Business with a Heart
“In a business, you have to grow together as a family. My father started this business with great commitment and trained us to manage it with the same ethical values. My brothers and I have been working hard to steer the company towards success and excellence through the years. As with all families, there can be differences, however with mutual respect and understanding we can achieve greatness. We understand the importance of creating a balance with family and business, so we take that into consideration as far as our staff are concerned,” he adds. People are the backbone of a business, and Jawad makes good on his personal pledge to help 78

“The greatest asset anyone can possess in life, and in business, is integrity.”
Jawad is approached by numerous potential business partners every year. He reviewsthemcarefullyalongwithmembers of his Board before he signs a deal. So how does he choose from all the opportunities he sees? All his decisions are based on the intent to provide highquality products and services that are beneficial customers. “The greatest asset anyone can possess is integrity; ‘who can I do business with that I can trust?’ Good relationships with people are priceless,” Jawad shares with us. “When my father started this business over 70 years ago, he insisted on giving the best to our clients. This is what drives the company’s ethos to this day,” he says. “We can’t be offering anything less than that because we have a name to protect. “The bottom line is, you make a decision you’ll be proud of, not just for the present but for generations to come.” www.ohlala-magazine.com

Port of call Looking to bring about positive change in Bahrain’s cultural landscape, the Mawane Initiative is slowly making waves in the arts arena. Ohlala!’s Karina Lazarraga chats with the creative team on their aspirations for the future.
C
oined from the Arabic word for ‘port’, ‘mawane’ expresses the nature of the initiative – embodying a portable gateway to Bahrain that functions as a platform that provides a space for the transition of ideas through collaboration, discussion and exchange of ideas. The Mawane Initiative is composed of Suha Babikir and Abdulla Janahi as founders and Ghadeer Al Khenaizi as codirector. They also collaborate with artists, several of which took part in their first-ever event. The creative collaborators include Mariam Al Noaimi – an interior designer and installation artist, Batool Al Shaikh – a fashion designer and senior architecture student at the University of Bahrain, Maitham Al Mubarak – architect and art enthusiast, Khalid Albaih – interior designer and established cartoonist and Nasser Al Zayani, an artist and architecture student at the American university of Sharjah. Started as an urban research project, the Mawane Initiative set out to investigate and revive the lost connection between people of Bahrain and the sea. The team began looking at various approaches of carrying out their research in a way that engaged the public and encouraged their direct interactive input.
82
OHLALA!
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Ohlala! Rendezvous Part of Mawane’s aim is to decentralise cultural events that usually take place in specific locations in Bahrain through an experimental urban research platform, whilst reviving the lost connection between the people of Bahrain and the sea. Ghadeer Al Khenaizi adds that they aim to, “Shift the art scene from upscale art galleries and cultural zones to public spaces to include the public that are usually discussed yet rarely included in the discussions. “From the start, Mawane was a platform that promoted collaboration and debate and tackles topics that are rarely discussed within the public sector. Through the work of Mawane, we aim to document and record urban phenomenon that occur on the site of the events complementing the research initiatives taking place in the Gulf.”
“The Bahraini art scene is changing rapidly and a lot is happening, which is very encouraging.” The group first cultural season entitled, ‘[In]Accessible’, consisted of art exhibitions, workshops, a movie screening and talks. The talks and screening were in partnership with the American Institute of Architects, Middle East Chapter, whilst the movie screening and documentary workshop were held under the patronage of the US Embassy. ‘[In]Accessible’ investigated the spatial implications of an era where public spaces are becoming inaccessible and the consequences they have on cities. In the lead-up to their first season, Mawane hosted a number of informal gatherings, which they called ‘Majalis’, to engage the initiative’s members, invited artists, architects, academics and the Damistan community in discussions that meant to develop the initial curatorial concepts and its relevance to the locals in Damistan village. Despite the challenges lie before them, Mawane is optimistic that they can realise their goals. Ghadeer says that, “Engaging the public is a big challenge, however we have learnt that by creating simple gestures such as inviting kids to drawing workshops attracts parents to the outdoor exhibition space for instance. “With our first cultural season completed, we are seeking for financial support to publish a book which intends to document ‘[In]Accessible’ in its entirety, and the results of their first cultural initiave, as well as for our future cultural events. “The Bahraini art scene is changing rapidly and a lot is happening, which is very encouraging. Many grassroots initiatives have started and it is important to have these movements, which complement the efforts of bigger private and governmental organisations in the country. Mawane is perhaps our way of changing it and shifting it in yet a different direction,” she adds.

As one door closes so another one opens. You need to keep this in mind because some of you may get some bad news on the work front this month but you should view it as a temporary problem because another, much bigger opportunity is waiting for you in the wings. The most important thing is that you do not allow yourself to get disheartened by events because you can sometimes be prone to depression as a sign and this is a problematic state for you to get out of once you slip into it.
Happy Birthday Ms Pisces
Giovanni unravels your destiny …
PISCES
This month is obviously going to be all about you and whilst that is likely to mean good things in the main, it won’t be exclusively so. There are some awkward situations that will break up your highlights and you’ll need to negotiate them carefully if you want to enjoy this month properly. It should be all about birthdays and celebrations and opportunities and there will certainly be a few of those! On the work front, a clash with a colleague could sour your mood a little around the first week of March but the chance to turn the tables will present itself much sooner than you realise. If you have any health concerns this month you also need to deal with them rather than leaving the ‘problem’ for later.
PISCES -AT-A-GLANCE
Those born under the sign of Pisces are deeply empathetic, gentle, patient people and are very closely tied to their environment. They are generous, positive-natured people with a deep sense of kindness and compassion and in tune with their feelings as well as the feelings of others. In fact they are one of the best signs for perceiving what is going on in the minds of friends and family, making them seen uncanny, almost psychic in their delivery. Pisceans are loyal, family oriented individuals who are kind and giving, almost to a fault. They are receptive to new ideas and adapt well to change, where others might stumble or hesitate. As far as careers go, anything artistic or driven by creativity is where they feel most at home and working with music, literature and drama will be where they make most strides. On the down side, they do not fit well into regimented situations or structured environments and tend to oppose or disrupt tradition. They tend to be emotionally needy and intense and this can lead them to have a negative effect on those around them. When it comes to business, because of their unpredictable nature they can be unreliable and easily distracted, mainly due to the fact that for most of their lives they live with their heads up in the clouds! They can also be terrible gossips and indiscreet so be careful what you share with them! www.ohlala-magazine.com
Aries
You might not able to realise it right now but you’ve come a long way in a short space of time and you’ve enjoyed a great deal of success that perhaps you don’t quite appreciate. Step back a moment sometime this month and look at just how far you have come. It should give you the kick you might be looking for to keep going when things feel tough. A trip on March 23 could open up a lucrative business opportunity and a face from the past may appear out of the blue, bringing more complications to your life than you initially realise.
Taurus
Money has been a big worry for you over the last few weeks, mainly because the failures of others have put you in a slightly difficult situation. That’s all about to change and you may have already felt the positive impact of this last month. March will allow you to really ride the crest of this change and the good news will keep coming for the next few months so make good use of the opportunities. A longstanding dispute is finally going to reach its conclusion this month and the good news is that the ending will fall in your favour.
Gemini
You deserve the recognition for all the hard work and energy you have given to a project but it has also proven a drain on your resources and what you now need to do is to increase your income generation. This might sound difficult but fortunately you are adept at raising revenue and are therefore likely to fall back on your feet quite quickly. As far as family is concerned, many of you will have reached a crossroads this month as you are forced to make a difficult decision on the future.
CANCER
LIBRA
A new partnership could be on the horizon but it may not be the kind you were expecting and may serve more as a bridge to other things rather than develop into any kind of long-term relationship. Still, the offer of companionship – even on a purely platonic level – could be exactly what you need at the moment and you would be foolish to turn away the company of others simply because you may still be clinging on to a past hope. You would also do well to curb any physical temptation put in your path since no eventual good will come of it.
Scorpio
If someone comes to you this month with a tip or the notion of a ‘safe bet’ then you should follow your instincts and go with them for there is much to be gained financially if you are willing to take the risk. The benefit may not be immediate but when it does come it may be overwhelming in its delivery and with the measure of rewards it brings. The principal thing to bear in mind here is that whatever you hear or are told you need to keep strictly to yourself since sharing the information – no matter how tempting – will jeopardise everything.
Sagittarius
Love can be a difficult emotion to find but it is often an even more challenging thing to keep fresh, especially in these modern, fast paced times. Many of you may be feeling disillusioned because career and a hectic family life have both interrupted your previously close relationships and it has resulted in you moving apart from your partner. My advice would be to take some time out and try to rekindle that fire. For most of you it is still very much there and all it really needs is a little attention. Stoke those fires and get yourselves back on track.
Capricorn
Some of you may be embarking on a new private venture and the good news is that despite a slow start, things are really going to take off for you this month so prepare for a demanding few weeks ahead. What you need to keep in mind is that for this to really work, you need to be committed and honest about what you expect to achieve. You have always said that having your own business has been a particular ambition of yours so now you really have to prove it. Don’t let the dream escape you.
Be very careful who you take advice from this month as there are certain individuals out there who seem intent on upsetting the apple cart and certainly do not have your best interests at heart. A dark haired woman with very distinctive eyes could prove to be the biggest hurdle for you to overcome, particularly if you are a man! Try to use logic rather than animal instinct when dealing with her otherwise you could be undone by your own base interests. On the business front, you need to move forward with a planned investment otherwise you could see yourself left behind when the real progress is made.
Leo

If you have any reason to suspect you are generally unwell or not yourself than this month you should consider paying the doctor a visit since you could be at the start of an illness, which is better, caught at its beginnings rather than later on. Lethargy or the need for more sleep than usual could simply be disguising a much deeper problem – possibly an emotional one - which you have not yet come to terms with. Rather than try to hide behind pride you should instead confront the issue and talk to someone that can help.
You could be the victim of a household disaster this month so the first thing you need to ensure is that your insurances are all in place because you’re going to need to call upon them in some fashion. Some of you may also be able to avoid this potential catastrophe by simply checking that pipe you know is leaking but haven’t got around to fixing yet or repairing that wobbly step on the stair you keep tripping on every time you are in a hurry to get to the front door! There is something to be said for planning so employ that in your thinking. OHLALA!

The Power of gratitude
ry Sk e ersa Anniv 50th tino Vale n
Grateful people are more helpful and compassionate. Gratitude strengthens relationships. If we show gratitude to our partners we become more satisfied, committed and closer within the relationship. Gratitude has been proven to strengthen the immune system, lower blood pressure, help us sleep better and feel more refreshed when we wake up. Gratitude also reduces anxiety and depression, it helps us see our situation in a way that can lessen panic and opens up our thinking to new solutions and ideas. When I open my curtains every morning I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the beautiful view I see, my mood is instantly boosted and I start the day with feelings of optimism, joy and pleasure, gratitude fills my body with a warm glow of energy, especially around the heart chakra. It makes me realise what I have, not in a material way, but what I have all around me wherever I may be, never taking anything for granted. Practise saying “Thank you” to the Cashier at the supermarket, see their face light up! They enjoy being thanked. There are three stages to practicing Gratitude states Dr. Robert Emmons: Recognising what we are grateful for, acknowledging it, and appreciating it. The benefits of Gratitude can be life altering. Oprah Winfrey with all her fame and fortune still writes a gratitude journal every evening. There is an app called the Gratitude Journal to encourage you to write at least five good things daily, add photos and rate the day. Making a gratitude board with sayings, affirmations and photographs, everything that makes you feel grateful is also good practise. As Louise Hay says, “Make gratitude a way of life.”

What is gratitude? It’s the warm feeling you get when you remember the person who told you to drop your 1980’s hairstyle and get with the new millennium! A feeling of appreciation or thanks for all the good things in life, the giftss and benefits that we have received.
