elcome to our Ramadan issue, which sees us getting our glad rags on and piecing together sparkly ensembles for a host of Iftars across the hotel circuit. When we arrive at this point in the year, we’re both excited and calm. It’s always so fun and foodfilled with an emphasis on togetherness. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t take to the tranquility that Ramadan brings to the work place. After back-to-back events in the Gulf and beyond, packed issues and relentless running around, I, and all of us at Ohlala, need a bit of pause. But, as ever in this business, the show must go on! When it comes to Ramadan style, the phrase: “belle of the ball” rings so true. It’s all about going bigger and better than the last outfit with suitably ostentatious accessories to match – we have you covered in this department quite thoroughly – hello statement necklace.
14
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Letter But for me, it’s all about minimalist chic, where you don’t have to be so loud but still create noise with your outfit. And on the topic of understated glamour, I have become such a cheerleader for abayas recently. I’ve always been partial to modest dressing so when I first came across Bouguessa a year ago, I loved how sleek and elegant the abayas were and how versatile they can be. You could mistake a Bouguessa abaya for a jumpsuit or a magnificent cape. We speak with Faiza Bouguessa about how she is revolutionising the abaya, one collection at a time. The abaya has come such a long way to form a new identity (without compromising its roots) and take on new meaning for women who want to be at the forefront of fashion but still honour their culture in the most sophisticated way. Wishing you all a wonderful Ramadan.

Ornamental Opulence
As we enter the holy month of Ramadan, the statement jewellery scene is awash with perfect pieces. Maria De Toni’s Al Nahda East & West Jewellery Renaissance is the epitome of exclusivity: there are only 5 limited edition pieces. Each parure is worth 200,000 Euros comprising a necklace, cuff, earrings and a ring in 18ct gold with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The calligraphic writing “Al Nahda” on the necklace charm with a central symbol of Allah is the testimony of the bridge between East and West. 16

C u tt i n g Ed g e T rad i t i oN The abaya as we know it has evolved. Gone are the days of homogenous wear; traditional dress is in fashion – with a twist. Editor in Chief Georgie Bradley speaks with Faiza Bouguessa, behind the eponymous, Bouguessa, who has revolutionised the abaya to be both urban and luxe

“Bouguessa has democratised long-held tradition and opened it to all”

“
“I felt that nobody really gave women who dress modestly any thought”
t’s an abaya?!” I recall squealing in disbelief. Not because what I was looking at was outrageously ostentatious or radical, I hasten to add. But because this particular abaya worn by a model sauntering about in a catalogue-perfect Parisian apartment, was something I’d wear in a heartbeat. The cut was sleek, tailored and form-fitting, without being too shapely around the contours of the body. It was a royal blue velvet abaya, draping so elegantly but with a slight urban slouch giving a modern note. Another model was clad in a sharp boxy suit of a deep burgundy hue (with a partially velvet collar) that hung confidently, showing both modesty and style. This is what Faiza Bouguessa does. She creates abayas that every woman would wear, regardless of their background. She has democratised long-held tradition, and opened it to all. Bouguessa pieces are not defined to one single aesthetic – Faiza likes to play with structure, geometry and flow: “I like to give my 34
www.ohlala-magazine.com
customers options. There’s the choice of wearing belts around the abayas if you want. My clients come to me for an abaya that’s a fashion statement. In my collection there are all types of abayas that can take you from day to night. There are some styles that are easy every day pieces and then there are some that are very eye-catching,” says Faiza. When it comes to the target market, she’s naturally placed an emphasis on the Gulf but for the SS16 collection, she had taken her collection to Europe and therefore felt the need to sidestep a bit. “I went away from my usual aesthetic. I was presenting in Paris and Milan and I felt that I had to make an effort to make it more adaptable to the European market. But for the AW16 [what is shown here] I realised it was better to focus on my market because that’s why I started the brand in the first place – I felt that nobody really gave women who dress modestly any thought.” Faiza has a rich tapestry of culture behind her. Born in Algeria but growing up in France and then living in Dubai has meant Faiza has had a diverse mix of influences for her work; but it’s not as prescriptive as you would think. “My inspiration is very random, just like any other designer. I am inspired by paintings, a piece of furniture, or a trend of the moment within international fashion,” adds Faiza. One trend that is present in the AW16 collection is the nod to pyjama wear that’s taken over the last couple of seasons – the piping details on the shirts and the cream velvet robe-like piece illustrate the hotly adopted trend the most.

“The unexpected colour in the lining or the geometry in the cut has brought the best out of the abaya and given it a new identity” In that vein, Faiza designs her abayas in such a way so as to give her clients freedom to build on the canvas of each piece – the unexpected colour in the lining or the geometry in the cut has brought the best out of the abaya and given it a new identity. But how far away from the abaya’s original roots and context will Faiza go with Bouguessa? “I would say the abaya has become more sophisticated over time. I think it’s a good thing because women feel the need to express their personality via style here, at the same time, they still have their strong religious beliefs and they want to respect that too,” notes Faiza. From our perspective, Bouguessa is a breath of fresh air and ticks all the right boxes. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Australia is a magical place that falls on many people’s travel wish list but it isn’t exactly very close to the GCC, or anywhere for that matter. In saying this and even though it’s a decent 14 hour plus flight from the Middle East, imagine arriving after a long flight to this view of Sydney. The Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney is a five-star hotel located at the historic area called The Rocks. It’s within walking distance to Circular Quay, the CBD, Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and the luxurious hotel offers harbour views from every guest room, no matter which room option you choose. On arrival we had our own private check in allocated to us and even though we were early, our room was ready, so we dropped off our bags with the concierge and got stuck right into the advantages this hotel has in terms of location. As we had arrived on a weekend, we were lucky enough to experience The Rocks Markets, just a five-minute stroll away, vendors
“We had a corner gorgeous suite with floor to ceiling windows looking out to the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and even all the way towards Pyrmont” offering handmade items, unique gifts and even stuffed toy kangaroos. We were booked into a Horizon Opera House City room and it was spectacular. These rooms showcase amazing views of the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay, where ferries come and go throughout the day. The rooms feature modern design and furnishings for a relaxing stay with soundproof windows, plush duvets and signature bed linens. We had a corner gorgeous suite with floor to ceiling windows looking out to the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and even all the way towards Pyrmont. We had a Super King Size super soft bed, spacious living room, a grand bathroom, with a tub right up against the window looking out to the view. We really loved the large marble bathroom with a 58

The goal of the club is to offer tailormade, hassle-free travel experiences in some of the world’s most desirable destinations. Horizon Club guests can enjoy Shangri-La’s unique spirit of hospitality, and a feeling of always being at home away from home. Benefits include bespoke holiday and business travel planning, as well as amenities and services to match guests’ individual needs. You can enjoy a private check in as mentioned before and have tea and coffee delivered to your room daily with a wakeup call. Travel Escapes 30th floor looking out again at the amazing view. A light breakfast is served every morning, offering a perfect spread of freshly baked breads, hot buffet, teas, coffees, pastries, fresh organic yoghurts, fresh fruits, & muesli. The best thing about this breakfast was that it wasn’t over the top, a small but quality selection. Coffee, tea and juices are available all day with a wonderful afternoon tea served from 2pm, offering sandwiches, tea, coffee, juices, scones and a variety of small cakes, perfect to put your feet up with a cuppa after a long day of sightseeing. Evening drinks and canapes are served from 6pm-8pm, the perfect excuse for a drink before heading to dinner. There is also access to more than 2,000 digital newspapers and magazines plus complimentary water and seasonal fruits delivered to your room. That evening we were booked for a dinner for two at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Altitude. Located on the 36th floor, with floor to ceiling glass windows not only did the view wow us but the service, the food and beverages completed our experience. The outstanding Sydney Harbour views accompanied the finest contemporary Australian cuisine. An 18-person private dining room is available for more intimate gatherings. The restaurant has won many awards including “Three Chef Hats”, Gault&Millau Sydney Restaurant Guide. The signature dishes from their experienced chefs are crafted with meticulous attention to every detail and presented at your table. This is definitely one of the highlights of the hotel and well worth a visit. The next day after breakfast, we walked down to the Ferry terminal and got a ferry across to Taronga Zoo and we spent most of the day at the Zoo looking around. Upon our return to the hotel we were booked in for a 60-minute signature massage at the Hotel’s CHI Spa which was a fabulous treat after a long day walking around. When we got to the spa, our host pushed open a huge secret door which lead into the long hallway of the spa.The host got us seated and offered a relaxing herbal tea, with a selection of green and chamomile already brewing. The treatment room was really spacious with a super soft comfy massage bed, light music playing and beautiful oriental scents. The ambiance was very relaxing and we couldn’t wait for the massage. The therapist worked hard on our tired and sore muscles and it was the perfect fix after lots of walking and a long haul flight. That afternoon, feeling fabulous after our massage we were booked in for our complimentary High Tea for two in the Lobby Lounge. The lobby is wrapped with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and features extravagant views of Sydney. It is an ideal place to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink while listening to lounge music. On our arrival we were served with a glass of fizz. The beautiful high tea had delicate and light, scones, finger sandwiches, cakes petit fours and the service was simply fantastic. Other things near to the hotel to go and see include: the Botanic Gardens, rooftop at the Glenmore Hotel, The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, Hyde Park, Kirribilli Markets, Oxford Street, Paddington for shopping, Darling Harbour a short 15 mins walk away from the hotel ), Sydney Aquarium ( which is also in Darling Harbour ) and Manly and Watson’s Bay by ferry. We can’t recommend this hotel enough for its perfect views of Sydney, delicious food, excellent service and gorgeous rooms. It’s well worth the long flight! www.ohlala-magazine.com

It’s not everyday you get you get to stay in a 7-star
hotel so you can imagine our excitement upon checking into Emirates Palace for a weekend. Our check-in was everything you would imagine from a hotel such as Emirates Palace where we were treated like royalty and given a cold refresher towel and a gorgeous bunch of apricot tea roses while our bags were whisked to our room. This hotel is seriously impressive if only for its sheer size and after we check in we are shown to our room and are given an explanation of the hotel’s offerings and the easiest ways to get around. The hotel is lavish and the traditional decor inside the hotel consists mostly of silver, gold, marble and glass mosaics. The chandeliers are made of Swarovski crystal and there are 114 domes (including the Grand Atrium which is higher than the dome of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome), 200 fountains, 1,000 hectares of landscaped parkland where 8,000 palms and other trees have been planted, a 1.3km-long beach,

a 6.4km jogging track, two swimming pools and underground parking for 2,500 cars. Emirates Palace doesn’t do things by halves. The eight-storey, kilometre-long mansion has a total of 850,000 square metres in floor space so we very happy to be shown the easiest ways to get the spa, beach and pool. We are checked into a Diamond Room Suite which faces the beach and has a beautiful large balcony. The room is filled with small vases of more apricot tea roses and they’ve even made us an incredibly special Ohlala magazine cover out of chocolate. Genius. The suite is large and very decadent with two large bathrooms and beautiful furnishings in neutral tones and with gold touches. There are 302 grand rooms in Coral, Pearl and Diamond categories split into the East and West wings so hotel guests can relax in total luxury including a 24-hour butler service. Our butler greets us in our room with a fresh juice and talks us through the room so that we know where everything is and lets us know to contact him at any time should we need anything. On our first night we are dining at Mezlai which is the restaurant’s Emirati restaurant. This unique restaurant offers delicious Emirati cuisine set in ambient Arab décor. Mezlai is an Arabic word meaning ‘the old lock of the door’. We choose the shrimp biryani which is beautifully cooked and elegantly presented. The staff are super friendly are take care very good care of us, this is the perfect restaurant to try some authentic Emirati food.

Local Escapes After a 7-star star snooze in our King size bed, we are ready for an early morning swim in the East Wing pool before breakfast. The grounds of the hotel are really quite amazing with immaculate kept gardens and lots of shade from the many palm trees. The East Wing pool also has a swim up bar and Cascade Pool Resturant should you feel peckish. After a refreshing swim, we head to Le Vendôme for a sumptous breakfast. The venue offers elegant indoor seating as well as an outdoor terrace. The restaurant is located on lobby level of the palace with an extensive terrace overlooking the beach &and marina. The buffet is extensive including everything from pastries, fruit, yoghurts, Arabic mezze, traditional hot breakfast options and eggs made to order along with lots of tea and coffee opotions plus fresh juices. After breakfast we take one of the palace bikes over the West wing to visit the Emirates Palace Spa. Featuring a blend of Moroccan-inspired interiors, domes and graceful archways interlaced with delicate furnishings and spa fittings, Emirates spa is a must visit. The spa offers an array of treatments from their fabulous hammam to high-tech facials but today we are trying their new CoolShaping slimming system. We slip into a robe and our therapist measures our problem areas such as thighs, arms and stomach as the treatment is designed to be done over a course of eight treatments. The treatment is aimed at those who need a little more support achieving weight loss ambitions the introduction of the ground-breaking CoolShaping slimming system to permanently destroy fat cells and sculpt your body, as well as the revolutionary 3-MAX, a clinically proven solution for cellulite reduction, connective tissue regeneration and fat metabolism. The treatment uses radio frequency and vacuum technology for the best non-invasive cellulite reduction and body sculpting results, with CoolShaping which eliminates stubborn fat cells to compliment the body’s natural contour. Our skin feels smooth and tones after one treatment which we are very impressed with. After our treatment we head back to our suite for a soak in the huge Jacuzzi tub before dinner at Sayad. Sayad is one of the many award-winning restaurants in the hotel that focuses on seafood dishes. Sayad is the Arabic for ‘fisherman’ so you can expect delicious seafood options a few other choices such as lamb or chicken dishes. We start off with a tasty tuna and avocado salad and scallops with blue cheese and pesto. Both dishes are delicious and beautifully presented. For mains we opt for the grilled tiger prawns with a chilli and garlic butter and grilled red snapper with a side of carrots and pistachios. Sayad is a lovely venue for an intimate dinner with excellent service and it was the highlight meal of our stay. We can’t speak highly enough of our experience at Emirates Palace and it’s absolutely well worth staying at this incredible property. The staff are super professional, the surroundings are stunning, rooms are decadent and there is a plethora of dining options. Do yourself a favour and book a stay. Pure
Bliss We indulge in some fabulous me-time at Talise Spa, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers
If you have ever set foot into Etihad Towers then
you’ll be familiar with their amazing venues. On this particular occasion we are checking into the spa for the Talise Signature Massage and a Deep Moisturising Facial. Talise Spa is tucked away from the main part of hotel lobby and is a beautiful, quiet retreat. The decor is super modern with marble finishes, cool light features and vast hallways. We were greeted in the relaxation room with some cold water and a refreshing hand towel, while our host talked us through what we wanted to get out the treatments and we filled in a form describing areas we were concerned with. We were then directed by our therapist who took us through to our treatment room and then ushered us into the large bathroom to slip into a robe and slippers. We were then taken to a large, comfortable chair where our feet were massaged and scrubbed and during this foot ritual we talked about what sort of pressure we would like for our massage and discussed our current concerns with our complexion. We lay down on the gorgeous treatment table that was oh-so-comfy and heated. The Talise Signature Massage is a combination of Lomilomi, Thai, Swedish and Balinese massage. Our therapists touch was very strong (which we had asked for) and a great job was done getting our knots out while making sure we were not in too much pain. Two heat packs were placed on different sections of our body during the massage which was a very nice touch. It was then time for the Deep Moisturising Facial, designed to rehydrate and balance the skin while giving it a perfect glow. The facial started with delicate stretching of our neck to improve circulation. There were also lots of massage movements to create deep relaxation and to tone the facial muscles. Once our face was double cleansed, exfoliated and steamed then a super-rich mineral mask was applied to intensely hydrate and revitalise our skin. Our complexion was left deeply moisturised and glowing. We’d highly recommend this spa for its fabulous treatments, lush surroundings and professional staff. The Talise Signature Massage, AED450 for 60 minutes and The Deep Moisturising Facial, AED450 for 60 minutes. Talise Spa, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers: 2 811 5555. latino Fever
Slick décor, a chilled outdoor terrace and an impressive menu of Latin American-inspired dishes make BU! a must visit in the capital
B
U! is Abu Dhabi’s hotly anticipated Pan-Latin lounge, restaurant and terrace which threw open its doors on the fourth floor of the World Trade Centre Mall’s dining destination, The Hub, last month. The restaurant is vast and decked out in very cool décor. An industrial fit out is off-set with bright coloured furnishings with a Latino feel and low-lighting, making it the perfect spot for fine dining in a cool and laid back atmosphere. Mexican head chef, Humberto Canales, plies his expertise in a vast theatre-style kitchen where home and street-style recipes are injected with contemporary sophistication; succulent cuts of meat and fresh seafood are prepared to perfection using traditional grills and smoking ovens. Diners will be taken on an epicurean adventure celebrating authentic Latin American cuisine via a sharing-style menu which features the tasty flavours of Latin America: from Mexico to Argentina, Peru to Brazil. On the night we dined, we sampled many delicious treats including an excellent chunky guacamole with Serrano chilli and deliciously spicy chimichurri potato chunks to start, some punchy citrusy sea bass ceviche and shrimp ceviche from the ‘raw bar’, and some Wagyu beef tataki and dory fish tacos for snacks. We highly recommend the ceviche; you can’t go wrong. Mains came in the form of delicious lobster, flavoured with Yuzu, some incredible tiger prawn camaron ajillo and black cod bacalad, and our favourite was a succulent Tomahawk steak, and some perfectly marinated striploin. All of the food wowed us and was super delicious, with an amazing journey through Latin cuisine that will certainly have us coming back for more. You also must visit the terrace - a large outdoor veranda complete with white furniture and faux grass walls where drinks are served, speakeasy style – it’s the perfect spot for drinks or dinner. We love the quirky features such as large lights and the swing table where you can rock back and forth in swing chairs. Additional DJs, artists and bands from South America, London, Miami and the Balearic will also be making guest appearances. Weekly themed evenings such as Monday’s ‘HOLA CH!CAS’ Ladies Night and Tuesday’s ‘DESTINATION’ night, which will see BU! pay homage to a dedicated Latin American country for the night, add to the energetic ambiance of this impressive new venue. “Play”. Play was developed at the end of a very long-lasting and frustrating creative block. I wanted Julia Ibbini’s work can really stimulate to make some ‘important’ pieces of work intellectual thought and talk. I shared the story of how I developed that collection because in Abu Dhabi, how did that come about? I think it’s very important for people to have a sense of the process My mum and dad met in the UK (dad’s Jordanian, mum is British) and involved in making art. It’s hard (but hopefully important) work, with ended up coming to Abu Dhabi on a short contract to set up a company long hours spent toiling away, a few moments of inspiration, a lot of - 35 years later they are still here! I’ve lived here most of my life apart from tea-drinking, and a little bit of dancing in the studio to very loud music. university in the UK. Does your mixed heritage inform your art and how you create your collections? I think growing up in a vibrant and mixed environment has very much informed my visual vocabulary which has a great deal of colour and complex use of pattern and line. When I’m doing research for new collections I look at both contemporary culture in the Middle East and I also look at much older methods of working and approach to form (I spent a wonderful couple of days at the V&A Museum in London earlier this year, and was fascinated by their Asia collections). Are you an artist by training or did this develop spontaneously? I wanted to study fine art at university, but was told by assessing tutors during my foundation year that I couldn’t paint or draw so therefore wasn’t really suitable for that specialisation. I did a degree in visual communications which allowed me to delve into areas such as video, printmaking, web design, typography, and digital art. I think in the end that was a more valuable learning experience and set me on the path to becoming the artist I am today. We’ve noticed your work stems from very visceral places - there are rich stories behind your collections. Talk us through

How do you take loaded themes and issues (social, cultural) and create a piece of art out of it? Where do you even begin? Unlike many artists who use sketchbooks and drawings as a starting point, I’m more partial to the written word. I tend to keep a notebook of ideas, musings, notes on events that have happened, thoughts I’ve had. Sometimes a single sentence can provide the basis for an entire body of work. Sometimes it’s a number of different ideas about identity and elements of the human condition that are woven into pieces through visual elements. Do you feel a sense of responsibility to address wider issues through the medium of art? Possibly. Will my work ever be political? Probably not. There are plenty of tremendously great people addressing many issues already. I feel a sense of responsibility to share the journey of being a creative person with others by being as open as I can about the how and the why of creating work. I am constantly developing my skill set as an artist so that the ideas I share have become bigger and more complex. I also feel (and I’m going out on a limb here) that there is too

“My responsibility as an artist is to take a stand and make work that is wildly colourful, sparkling and beautiful, with chaos and tangled webs of ideas”
much contemporary art out there made by people who have no talent other than to spin a few clever words with their gallery representative; art that is boring, ugly and completely unimaginative. I feel it’s partly my responsibility as an artist to take a stand and make work that is wildly colourful, sparkling and beautiful, with chaos and tangled webs of ideas. Because it’s that kind of art that instils a sense of wonder and excitement in us all. We love your collection: Ode To The Sea, commemorating Abu Dhabi’s beautiful waters. What do you love most about the city? My earliest memories are of the sea here and I think that’s what I love most about Abu Dhabi. What has been your most profound collection to you on a personal level? I think probably ‘Right Here, Right Now’. The starting point for the collection was about motherhood and the inevitable change that comes with having a child. I have a terrific relationship with my daughter who is seven now and my art has changed in many ways since she was born; that collection was the starting point of a more mature approach in thinking and developing the work. Have you got any upcoming exhibitions in Abu Dhabi we can look forward to? I run an artist-led organisation called No White Walls and we hold an annual show which opens each September at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. Visit: www.ibbini.com

With Ramadan just around the corner, Manar Al Hinai explains the importance of a much needed detox for both the body and soul While abstaining from food might be hard in the beginning especially since Ramadan’s taking place in the summer, I still look forward to it. Not only is fasting great for the health, as it allows the body to detox, it also reminds us of those deprived of basic necessities and if done correctly, it is the perfect time to detox our body, mind, and soul. The problem that we working ladies face is that before we know it, we find ourselves overwhelmed and want a break from it all. Just a while back, I faced one of the toughest months in my life in terms of managing my business. I seriously considered calling it quits. Quitting is always the easiest things to do right? It was then that an alarm rang in my mind, and put everything into perspective. What did I do? I took a nice break. I stopped responding to emails, and dedicated my time to doing things for myself. Towards the end of my break, I felt more energetic, and even laughed at myself for considering quitting. When I dived back into work, I was energetic, felt more productive and could not wait to explore new opportunities. Work is great. Managing your own business is even greater. Nothing compares to the joy of achieving your business target while doing the thing you are passionate about. However, taking a break and doing things that you enjoy doing whether it is a certain sport, or a simple dinner date with close friends and family, is just as important. 88
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Your brain needs to relax just as much as it needs to work and be productive. This Ramadan, consider detoxing your mind. Make it a habit to dedicate the weekend to your personal life. Work within certain hours only. Spend time doing things you love. If you find that hard to do, pencil it in your schedule or make a promise to yourself to not substitute that dedicated time with work. Do not neglect yourself and wait to fall down sick in order to take a break. Also, make Ramadan a starting point for healthy eating and exercising. It takes around 21 days to develop a new habit, and Ramadan would be a great way to start. As the month of giving, it is the best time to give back. If you ever considered corporate social responsibility, start in Ramadan. Perhaps you and your team could donate some meals to labour camps, or incorporate a year-long volunteering program at the office. Having a sense of purpose enhances the corporate culture, and also serves as a great team building exercise. The bottom line ladies, is to never forget about yourself. Work is good, but you need to relax, and do things that are great for your health and soul. Sometimes all what we need is a push. Start with Ramadan. I would like to wish you all a blissful month filled with laughter and happy Iftar gatherings.

The-Rolls-Royce Dawn Open-air motoring simply doesn’t come more luxurious and elegant thanthis –we presenT the drop-dead gorgeous Rolls-Royce Dawn
A
t first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking the Dawn is merely a drophead (that’s ‘Rolls -Royce speak’ for ‘convertible’) version of the Wraith coupe. However, you would be very mistaken. This is because, rather than simply cutting the roof off of a Wraith, Rolls-Royce have redesigned the Dawn from the chassis up to be the perfect cabriolet. This has resulted in an 80% difference between the styling and shape of the Dawn and the Wraith. On the Dawn, the door lines are higher so that you sit lower in the cabin and experience less wind-noise, as well as adding to the aesthetics of the car when the roof is down. Plus, rather than go for the easy option in terms of soundproofing and body rigidity and give the Dawn a folding hard top, Rolls-Royce insisted on using a fabric roof for its classic aesthetic, which involved some serious engineering wizardry as they also claim that, with the roof up, the Dawn is as silent inside as the Wraith. 90
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Without sound-measuring technology we can’t attest to this, but we can say that the Dawn is as silent as you’d expect from a Rolls-Royce, and also as smooth and sublime. With the roof down, it’s entirely possible to have a conversation without raising your voice even at highway speeds, such is the design of this gorgeous drop top. However, the Dawn does share some elements with the Wraith; the BMW-derived chassis also seen in the Ghost, for example, as well as the 6.6l twin-turbo V12 and the impressive satellite-guided eight-speed transmission that automatically selects the ideal gears for you depending on the road ahead. As a result, the driving experience doesn’t noticeably differ from a Wraith – at the end of the day, you’re talking about two supremely comfortable, luxurious and powerful cars that are designed to offer the most refined motoring experience humanly possible. That is what defines a Rolls-Royce experience, and it’s the same across their range. The transmission is so smooth you aren’t even aware of gear
changes, and despite the size of the engine, only a faint rumble is heard even when you press the accelerator hard. Though the Dawn does feel big, it is surprisingly fast and agile. Don’t get me wrong, it’s never going to feel at home on a racetrack, but it accelerates with gusto, and pulls its considerable weight around corners well, thanks to the massive amounts of grip from the huge tyres. Parking it is also a doddle, thanks to an excellent all-round parking camera that helps you slot into spaces with ease! However, if you’re looking for excitement, you’ve come to the wrong car – unless, that is, you’re excited by soft leather, premium wood panelling and elegant design. Rolls-Royces are designed to be effortless, refined and relaxing, rather than thrilling or adrenalinepumping. The Dawn offers a broader appeal than the Phantom Drophead, as it’s more of a driver’s car than a limousine, and yet still offers that glorious Rolls-Royce luxury. Rolls-Royce call the Dawn ‘the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever made’. We’re not inclined to disagree with them… www.ohlala-magazine.com

Miss Ohlala
Be my guest
Ever the hostess, Miss Ohlala explains the ups and downs of having visitors come to stay I love having people to stay but... I honestly would prefer it if they left after a maximum of four days. It doesn’t matter whether they are family, close friends or strangers, I just don’t have the tolerance levels to put up with anyone invading my personal space for long. And if I had a gate house or separate cottage (unfortunately not), I would put them up there. Don’t get me wrong, I bend over backwards to make sure my guests are enjoying their stay. And I take pride in making it comfortable for them and cooking good food. I spent so many hours deliberating over spare room furniture and linens, much to my husband’s despair, that it has become a household joke. My husband rolls his eyes at any new household furnishing and rhetorically states: “I suppose that’s for the guest room?” The main problem is that I am terrible at mornings. I am fine if no one speaks to me before I’ve had my morning cup of tea in bed followed by a cappuccino, but I am not sociable before the caffeine kicks in. And when you have people staying you have to make small talk over breakfast. Also, I never know whether it is acceptable to greet people whilst you are making an early morning cup of tea in a dressing gown. Add to that I am very short sighted so I can’t see their face properly to have a conversation 98
www.ohlala-magazine.com
if I haven’t yet put my contacts in; which clearly I can’t do before I’ve had a cup of tea, as that would be in the wrong order. Whether you put your socks on before or after your trousers (my husband and I argue about the proper order for such things), everyone has a morning routine, like it or not. Guests disturb that delicate balance. Sometimes my husband likes to eat macaroni and cheese leftovers for breakfast, but he can’t do that while my mother is staying as she would be horrified. And we can’t leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight otherwise she will be up at the crack of dawn doing the washing up like a cleaning fairy, and that makes me feel guilty. And why is it you need to take out the rubbish, restock the bathroom stationary and run the washing machine three times more than usual, even when you have only one guest staying; it just doesn’t make mathematical sense. Now I fully appreciate that there are bigger issues in life and this problem clearly lies with me being too uptight and requiring more patience. I also appreciate that I am very lucky to have wonderful friends and family... but I still would rather they come to stay for lots of short breaks! The good news is that as it’s now too hot, so no one will want to come and stay again until September. The irony is that I’m missing them all already!
