I

’m not going to tell you that the runways were a revolution this season – sacrilege, I know. But let’s think about it, are they ever as evolutionary as we claim them to be? I and we as a magazine have been guilty of using the words: “The runways were awash with x,y,z new trends” when really it’s simply updated, recycled and rehashed ideas from the past that we repackage and market as something nouveau. Perhaps at this point you’re worried about my credibility as an editor but I can assure you I am going somewhere with this point. I love fashion as much as the next bunny (sorry, terrible… but you got it) and I thrill at the new lines coming in their droves to the shop floors. Fundamentally though, it’s just old style with new appeal – the never-before-worn element, excites us. You do of course get designers who blow us off the FROW with innovative, unusual and incredible costume pieces that instantly earn a place in a V&A style museum and this is what fashion is all about: pushing the boundaries and creating historic work. Even if what we see on the runways each spring has been seen before in another fashion life, the idea of spring brings a renewed sense of self beyond ready-to-wear. Fashion is the external to our internal happiness. It’s a wonderful thing that we have fashion to lift us and bring out the best of who we are. Let’s celebrate the newness of us and thank fashion for always being a constant to that.

First Word

Fresh Fashion At the start of a new season, it’s always exciting to see the fashion pages come together. The issue becomes an expression of new pieces, colours and ideas for your wardrobe. There’s also an exciting focus on the new accessories of the season and the trends you need to know now. Key trends I’m excited about include lots of sequins; don’t be afraid to wear your heart on your sleeve, especially if it’s as sparkly as a full on sequin look. Ruffles have reigned supreme on the catwalk for a few seasons now and it seems they are going nowhere fast with a slight change from off-theshoulder to much more statement, ruffled sleeves. Power women will enjoy the return of tough power suits and tailored dressing and I highly recommend trying this trend on for size while I’m super happy to see the return of the waist after seasons of too much billowing fabric, hourglass silhouettes are back thanks to some savvy waist belt styling. Enjoy the issue!

Outside The Box Nathalie Trad is a household name in the fashion world over. The eponymous brand doesn’t need much introduction anymore as it’s everywhere. Nathalie chats to us about how a chance meeting with Rupert Sanderson turned into a winning collaboration and why we should expect the unexpected from the brand

I

t’s safe to say, you’ve become the go-to brand for For Spring/Summer 2017, I set off on a journey to a fictional luxury clutches. What do you think has driven all city, a place I named Republic 406. An imagined beguiling your success? sanctuary one could only read about in the tea-stained pages We continuously experimented with our materials of a novel; a world so flawlessly contained, it could very well be and work towards discovering new inlay techniques, in a snow globe. 36

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Designer of today. A woman who is fluent in the language of art and design, who is not necessarily looking for trends, so much as special pieces to add to her wardrobe and hold onto. I would like to see the Nathalie Trad brand evolve into an all-encompassing lifestyle brand slowly but surely, expanding its reach throughout the years across various geographies. Who approached who for the Nathalie Trad x Rupert Sanderson shoe? What do you feel is Nathalie Trad’s and Rupert Sanderson’s best qualities that allow for a brilliant fusion of fashion? The collaboration with Rupert Sanderson came about during a chance meeting at Paris Fashion Week. We found that the inlaid materials I use on clutches would lend themselves beautifully to the heels of his shoes. And who better to collaborate with than the footwear master himself? Indeed, this collaboration was a great window into the world of footwear for me. I am always looking for ways to expand the realm of possibilities with the materials I use. This collaboration has given me the opportunity to explore new avenues and will hopefully lead to a new direction for Nathalie Trad as well as contribute to fulfilling our longterm goal of building a lifestyle brand offering accessories across multiple categories. What did the creative process involve? Who did what? It was important to allow each other creative freedom, so I worked on different inlay techniques for the heels that Rupert provided and he focused on creating the upper for the shoes. Was the end result what you imagined? The end result is even better than I could have ever possibly imagined! The perfect marriage of design, craftsmanship and comfort. We love how Nathalie Trad’s trademark is found on the block heel. Why the heel? We chose the heels as they allowed us to work with a big enough canvas to allow the inlay details to shine. The heel we picked for this collaboration is sculptural, geometric and modern, hence, represents both our aesthetic perfectly. Has this collaboration inspired you to create your own shoe line? Never say never!

am meeting Christian Louboutin for a golden half hour – a small wedge of time granted between shoe signings, meal times, a charity gala, sleep, TV interviews and a return flight to Paris. Not your regular run-of-the-mill business trip, but a whirlwind 36 hours typical to the life of a fabulous designer who handles these packed pockets of time with expert ease. God forgive me, but I am wearing black trainers to meet him. What a let-down I think, especially when I catch a glimpse of a studded pair of Oxfords tucked underneath a coffee table, so shiny I can see my reflection in them – presumably worn at his charity gala the night before. Luckily, he’s wearing a pair of (a surprising choice, even to him) Middle Eastern leather sandals (“I never wear sandals, I don’t like them but I just decided to wear them today”) and an unintimidating blue hoodie and jeans ensemble. We settle on a plush beige sofa out on his private terrace at a five-star resort hotel, overlooking the cerulean Arabian Gulf. We sit face to face (he puts on a pair of royal blue sunglasses, but I can feel his warm eyes looking right at me without any self-consciousness despite being a self-proclaimed shy person) while his entourage get on with low-level but busied activity around us without interrupting. He has a small voice but his wit is confidently dry – he notes the absurdity of the cool weather in the region as he gathers his arms and rubs his palms together but his c’est la vie attitude is reassuringly intact. He takes interest in who I am and how I got to where I am. It’s very sobering to see that a man with so much genius, an emperor of high heels the world over, is also very genuine. His shoes have been worn by the most well-heeled members of the global elite and us everywomen, who feel our most fantastic selves when hoicked up in a pair of his stilettos and give a seductive flash of those signature red soles as we take our strong and sexy strides in them. He is remarkably unfazed by the flurry of excitement his work creates

Designer

Focus

and is unperturbed by industry events like fashion week too for that matter. It’s not that he doesn’t care, it’s just that his priorities lie in the nuts and bolts of the shoemaking process. He’s so intent on treating shoes as stand-alone pieces, he never designs them to match clothes. “While I am drawing, I always draw the woman naked. The only time I would think of clothes is if I am collaborating with another designer, otherwise it’s just about the shoe” he explains. Christian has designed a staggering 20,000 shoes. It seems incredible to think that there can be 20,000 differences in a pair of shoes but Christian has a simple philosophy behind his genius. “If you have a vivid mind, enthusiasm and a love for what you’re doing, it can be done. If you love to speak, you can speak for 100 years, if you love to dance you can dance for 100 years,” he says. One constant in all 20,000 designs though, is the iconic red sole. The story behind this trademark feature is just as cosmic as you might think. “Years ago, when the first prototype of a colourful Andy Warhol-inspired Mary-Jane shoe I designed arrived while I was in Italy, I thought it looked very good – but, the drawing looked better and I didn’t understand why? The drawing had more pop. At one point, I turned the shoe so the heel was facing me and the sole was black and suddenly the entire shoe became black despite having many colour. It was a huge percentage of black that didn’t exist in my drawings. The model who was trying on the shoe was actually painting her nails in a strong red colour in that moment and I said to her: ‘Give me your nail polish for a second, I want to try something.’ I ended up painting the sole with this red nail polish and it looked much better,” he recounts. And

that’s how the iconic red sole came to be. Contrary to what you’d expect, the requests he gets from celebrities are remarkably uncomplicated. Madonna, Lady Gaga and J.Lo have extravagant personas to uphold but typically, it’s not about the shoe for the specific occasion. “If it’s for an award show for example, it will never be a slide heel, because it might fall off as they go on and off stage so it’s more about being practical. They want to look good but they don’t want to have to think about what they are wearing because the agenda of their night is about their cause, not the shoe,” he explains. The Middle Eastern aesthetic never shies from attention. Christian has been coming back and forth to the Middle East for years and loves the “extreme and impressive makeup and hair” that women sport. He’s designed many one-off, exclusive pairs of shoes for the market in the past and sets “earthy colours with gold” as the perfect palette for Middle Eastern women – “gold goes very well with the sun”. Naturally, Christian is a shoe fiend. “I like every kind of shoe. My shoe closet is very organised too. There are two sections for sneakers, the black shoes are together, spikes are together, embroidered shoes are together and espadrilles are together,” he says. But when asked about his clothes collection, he struggles to list his favourite pieces – he doesn’t invest much in collecting any one piece except “ties and bowties. I have hundreds of them but I barely wear them, but I still keep collecting!” Instead, his collecting habits lie in native American art like masks and dolls or sculptures. “I love small, detail-oriented pieces like Persian Miniatures. I don’t collect art, I like three dimensional things. Oh [a little laugh] I collect houses too, I have to be careful with that, it’s a very bad addiction!” www.ohlala-magazine.com

Kim Kardashian

Visits Dubai Professional makeup artist, Sarah Ulhaq, gives us the scoop on Kim Kardashian and Mario Dedivanovic’s grand beauty conference that was held in Dubai. The beauty guru was present at the Master Class for all things makeup where she was answered her most burning beauty questions.

M

ario, do you have any advice for anyone who wishes to become a top make-up artist? Assists other make-up artists; pay your dues, clean brushes, hang around anything that you think you can learn from. Back stages are gold mines of information. How easy is it for a make-up artist to make it as a household name? The industry has changed, before you had to be willing to sacrifice more time in order to achieve anything. Now it’s become a thing that many come and go before you even realise. So, in order to get noticed, you have to be creative, be consistent, and be patient. Kim, how did you and other celebrities choose makeup artists? We use contacts from people we’ve work with in the past and personal references, but sometimes we just look on the internet and see who is doing something that we like. It’s not always a numbers game of who has the biggest fan base; sometimes it’s who is the most unique and whose style works with what we’re looking for. Kim, why have you stuck with Mario for so long as your MUA? We started pretty much together in the industry, and he’s not just my MUA but also more like family. He understands and respect personal

boundaries; when it comes to his craft I trust his judgment because quite frankly he knows what he’s doing. Kim, in your opinion how has the makeup industry changed since Mario first started? There is this whole new wave of artists that can learn so easily from makeup classes such as these, from social media, instagram and much more. It’s important to ask these questions because when Mario started he had to assist, clean makeup brushes, it’s all that, that truly defines his etiquette.

Master Class Tips from Sarah Ulhaq: 1. Blend 2. Less is more 3. You don’t always have to go heavy with the product. Shadowing and contour works wonders. 4 Beauty should be about enhancing, not hiding it 5. Don’t be afraid to try new things some products have dual purposes

Beauty Column A new season is so exciting and a great opportunity to give your beauty look and regime a revamp. This season, make-up and beauty has taken a new turn and is now less about strong trends and more about what suits you. The look is also much more natural which we think is perfect for spring/summer especially here in The Gulf where summer is so hot and it’s a bit much to be layered in products. But before you think natural is boring don’t fret. Colour took centre stage on the eyes and the lips, with glossy pouts, glittery and electric hues on the eyes all spotted backstage. Nails and skin were pared-down but chic, with the natural and radiant feels. But the best advice for SS17 beauty is showing your own personality and playing up your good points. You might want to avoid buying that new matte lipstick or contour kit.

Over-Stencilled Brows Say ta-ta to eyebrow stencils and harsh pencils. It’s all about natural and slightly untamed brows this season. All you need is some clear brow gel and an eyebrow brush, adding a little brow pencil into any gaps and you’re ready to go. You should always be able to see the hairs of your eyebrow, especially on the ends. This look is so much easier and natural!

Harsh Contouring I love a good bronzer as much as the next girl but it’s all become a bit too much. The chiseled, contoured look that is super popular got a lot of attention thanks to the Kardashians but this season is better replaced with softer, strobe-like accents. Go for soft bronzers, light strokes and a small dab of highlighter and blush.

Salvatore Ferragamo

Game of Thrones Braids

Out With The Old Angela Beitz advises you to wipe your slate clean for the new season and tells you which trends to say goodbye to this year

While we won’t see braids falling off of the beauty surface completely, SS17 runway shows indicate that they will likely take a back seat to edgier, slicked-back ponytails, half-up, halfdown styles and knots in the upcoming season. Think crisp, cool power-looks that are super polished. Meanwhile, the soft waves that were popular for 2016 are being replaced with uneven, and slightly messy curls. Pump up the volume with a texturising paste or sea salt spray, working upward and outward.

Too Much Matte We’re not swearing off matte lipstick altogether. That said, the new trend is definitely high-shine. Scoop up a clear gloss and wear it by itself for a more natural look, or coat it over your favorite matte or cream shades for added dimension. Just like matte lipsticks, matte eye shadows are taking abackseat this season. Opt for a wash of metallic over the eyelid or get creative with one a neon shade.

Bare Face Ready With heavy make-up looks now gone it’s a great time to invest in your skin. Bare faced beauty that glows from within is easy you just need the right skincare. Your routine should include an exfoliator, hydration and moisture, and ingredients like Glycolic acid, Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Gluthatione, Collagen and Vitamin C for all-round care, leaving you with skin ready to bare. Ramp up your regime with serums and sheet masks for glowing, healthy skin. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Call Of The Wild There are desert escapes and then there’s Salalah in Oman. An exotic blend of lush foliage and arid beauty. We stayed at Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara and experienced a world away from the wider Gulf – bliss

ultimate comfort. We went off to Salalah via Dubai with Fly Dubai where we were pampered with sumptuous business class seating, wonderful food (we had prawn machboos, from a selection of four international dishes) and a Wifi connection that could easily rival the speed down at sea level! All in all, the start of our trip was smooth, easy and comfortable – the perfect way to prepare for a luxurious trip ahead. As we touched down in Salalah, we were super impressed by the airport, it was modern and much bigger than we expected, they are clearly planning for the future, which is great to see. The moment we stepped off the plane, the Omani hospitality was on overdrive and made us feel so welcome. We’ve often been told that in the entire GCC, the Omanis are famously warm and hospitable and we can definitely attest to that – if not more.

“The beach was uninterrupted for as far as the eye could see” As far as drives goes, the journey from the airport to the resort was seamless and beautiful. Salalah has so much greenery on offer, far more than we expected but also, a unique blend of lush foliage with arid beauty – something we are not always privileged with on our shores. There’s a real natural vibe about it too, as if we were on a tropical island. The resort, is a sight to behold. Situated in the heart of the perfume capital of Arabia, Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara is a playground of culture, history and adventure for inquisitive travellers, whilst empty white-sand beaches, shady palm trees and sun-kissed waters cater for those who wish to unwind. From historic forts and citadels, endless dunes and untouched beaches to soaring mountains, vibrant bazaars and lush coconut and banana plantations, this spellbinding Omani enclave oozes colourful stories intertwined with history and legend. We were welcomed by our own dedicated butler who handled the 60

check in process in the villa. During the check in process itself we had a relaxing welcome foot soak which we were told is a Thai traditional welcome – not your everyday welcome, that’s for sure, but it was a special touch nonetheless. The resort’s interiors boast traditional elements incorporating a communal seating area originally used to greet guests with Arabic coffee or tea, dressed in bright kilim fabrics and soft cushions. Recessed walls, once used to store supplies, are adorned with local antiques and artwork, with lanterns scattered throughout to create a peaceful ambiance. The use of symmetry is also an important feature throughout the grounds with raised black-stone water features mimicking the ancient falaj irrigation system running towards important focal points, the ocean and the lagoon. The stunning entrance arches embrace the beauty of Islamic

architecture to complement the natural landscape and the palm trees, imitating the curve of their graceful branches. The arch was designed for structural and functional purposes and is a key feature of this type of architecture, but it is now predominately used for decorative purposes. The arch features throughout the hotel, with the most spectacular examples found in the lobby and the spa, helping to create an authentic atmosphere. That night, we indulged in a seafood buffet dinner at Sakalan – a mix of local and Asian flavours, adhering to the overall of the hotel. Sakalan, which translates to ‘The Land of Frankincense’ is an all-day dining restaurant, with open kitchens and deli counters serving an array of cuisines from near and far. Breakfast greets guests with lavish choice – freshly baked bread, croissants and homemade jams alongside pita, creamy hummus and shakshuka. For lunch and dinner, guests can enjoy dishes from around the world, fresh sushi and authentic Arabic to fiery Indian and contemporary Western, all set by the infinity pool. The next morning, we took to a 10km run along the unending beach. We really appreciated the natural beauty of the coast where we saw so much wildlife. The beach was uninterrupted for as far as the eye could see. The hotel has no competing hotels either side, so it has a monopoly on the stretch that goes for miles and it makes it feel that much more exclusive. Later that day, we took to a tour of the Land of Frankincense Museum and Al Baleed Archaeological Park with Salalah Guru. Located within a short distance from the resort, the 60 hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site features ruins of an ancient city which dates back to 2500 BC and was the centre of frankincense trade. Just inside the park is the Land of Frankincense Museum with a comprehensive view of the history and cultural heritage of Oman as well as maritime legacy across the centuries. It added a lot of flavour to our experience overall and was filled with interesting stories. We closed the day with 30 minutes of yoga on the beach which calmed our mind and soul, against a gorgeous polychrome sunset. This was followed by Dining By Design on the beach. Surrounded by flickering candles, couples can enjoy a choice of connoisseur menus served by a personal chef and villa host in a secluded beach or garden setting for the ultimate dining à deux experience. A day by the pool is always our fast track to unwinding, and of course, when an infinity pool is involved, life becomes that much more sweet. What’s more, is this relaxing morning was followed by a trip to the spa – one that lasted many hours. Anantara Spa takes guests on a holistic journey to restore strength, beauty and balance to the body, mind and soul. Featuring five suites alongside separate male and female wet areas, relaxation areas, Thai massage suite and nail spa, and guests can experience a range of treatments in total privacy with the highly skilled therapists. Harnessing precious ingredients such as frankincense as well as bananas, coconuts and pomegranates from nearby plantations, each treatment has been designed to renew from tip to toe, whether it’s a stimulating body polish, therapeutic massage, replenishing wrap, radiant facial or ancient Ayurvedic treatment. In all, the Anantara experience in Salalah is nothing short of fantastic – from the breath-taking villas to the all-encompassing nature, this trip was faultless and we cannot recommend it enough. Capital Luxury Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island – a stunning addition to the city’s hospitality scene and the perfect place for a long weekend staycation close to home

www.ohlala-magazine.com

65

The name Four Seasons is synonymous with 5-star service and impressive surroundings so when we walked into the brand’s newest property in Abu Dhabi, located on the vibrant waterfront of Al Maryah Island, it becomes immediately obvious what true luxury is all about. You’ll be greeted by some of the warmest and friendliest staff as well as being offered a hot or cold towel (depending on the weather) and a welcome drink at check in. As far as first impressions go, this was pretty spectacular. The lobby is beautiful, it’s home to the beautiful Al Meylas lounge where one of the best afternoon teas in the city is served up. Stylishly decorated, for a lobby venue it’s an incredibly sophisticated and comfortable space with natural light coming in through the tall windows and we love all the striking floral arrangements. Dubbed the “living room of Abu Dhabi” where comfortable sofas and armchairs will make you feel as though you’re lounging at home, in a modern majlis setting, Al Meylas is the ideal place to marvel a sunset whilst sipping on a variety of flavourful hand-selected teas, artful coffees and non-alcoholic cocktails accompanied by sweet and savoury delicacies of Emirati cuisine with an innovative twist. We would highly recommend trying the superb Arabic afternoon tea, featuring yummy local specialties including hummus, mutabal, whole-wheat pitta and mini zaatar manakish alongside an array of sweet treats including kustawi date, almond brownies, muhallabia, rice pudding and saffron sago panna cotta the latter was definitely our favourite! But hold on, that’s not all that makes this dining experience a special one. As an authentic gesture of hospitality, guests gathering are offered a scent from the lounge’s partner, Tola Perfumery. Tola showcases eight evocative fragrances to capture the hearts of aficionados looking for excellence, craftsmanship and genuineness. Each scent tells a story of its own. Inspired by Qahwah (Arabic coffee) and Bukhoor (incense) which 66

www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Fresh flowers everywhere are the nicest touch and we are welcomed with fresh fruit and decadent chocolates” remains to be the symbol of Middle Eastern hospitality and rich tradition, the Tola smelling cups, found on each Al Meylas table, have been developed to combine and capture the Gulf-ingrained customs introducing them in a unique way. If, like us, you can’t choose just the one fragrance, you can blend two together and create your very own unique Tola scent! And all of this is even before we tell you about the room! When we walk into what is to be home for the next few nights, we find our suite to be not only practically designed, but luxuriously spacious too. Fresh flowers everywhere are the nicest touch and we are welcomed with fresh fruit and decadent chocolates. There’s a lovely living area complete with a huge comfy sofa and a table for dining. A separate work area has everything you could ask for, and more, in terms of enough sockets to charge all your gadgets and devices and plenty of space to lay out important papers or books.

And when you need to catch up on emails, finish a presentation or meet a deadline, just look up and out of the window at the breathtaking water views, which should help to ease any stressful situation. Everything is controlled via an iPad which really is the height of hi-tech living, and throughout our stay the controls for everything worked flawlessly (even the powered curtains). Furnishings of soothing blue and grey created a relaxing atmosphere teamed with the white and grey marble bathroom that boasts a separate deep soaking tub and shower which is exactly what you need after a day of sightseeing or shopping. If that’s not enough, the bathroom also has Ferragamo amenities and an in-mirror TV which we were enthralled by. In the room, a well-stocked refrigerated private bar and a complimentary espresso and tea maker, a 55-inch HD TV, in-room safe, quickdry hairdryer, bedside charging stations, and probably the most amazing thing of all, the customisable King Size Four Seasons Bed – with your choice of mattress topper, and down duvets and pillows – this made for some of the best sleeps we’ve ever had.

When relaxation calls, Dahlia Spa celebrate the surrounding waters with abundant fountains and views of the Arabian Gulf. The eight spacious luxury spa suites – including one exclusive couples’ suite – all feature private showers and most offer windows, giving the option of natural light or soothing darkness. Here is where we experienced the new Hamman Treatment featuring products from Maroc Maroc. We sit in the steam room to relax our tired muscles and are then treated to a truly special hammam experience. Our skin is cleansed, scrubbed and

Afterwards make sure to check out the facilities or kickback in the relaxation lounge on the heated beds – it’s the best feeling. Food has never been this diverse and this good. From the drinks and light bites at Zsa Zsa, to poolside mocktails at Eclipse, Terrace Lounge, the lunch at Crust, the extensive in-room dining menu, you’re going to be spoilt for choice with quality cuisines. Café Milano is a must try where fine Italian dining meets sophisticated style where you can savour dishes inspired by the southern coast of Italy, in a setting designed by acclaimed New York designer Adam Tihany – bright, modern and airy. Hand-made pasta, fresh

seafood and loads of other tasty options are on the menu with chef specials providing exciting alternatives daily. Butcher & Still, located on lobby level, should be top of your list. This cool space is a modern interpretation of a 1940s Chicago steakhouse – presenting a rustic, retro design with wooden floors and leather banquets. Eclectic details continue right into the bathrooms, where bullet casings accent the tile work, echoing the era of Al Capone. The menu showcases exceptional steaks and sides. Meats are flown in from specially selected farms in the United States, with a focus on quality prime cuts. There’s a 1,800-degree-Fahrenheit oven for searing, a charcoal grill, and an open oven for baking fresh bread. The focal point of the bar is a reproduction of an antique hand-operated martini shaker – known as the “Tanqueray No. 10 Imperial Martini Shaker” – one of only five in the world and the only one in the Middle East. The main dining room overlooks the water and skyline, with a retractable wall that opens to an outdoor patio. We absolutely love this venue and we’d highly recommend it for drinks or dinner. Perhaps one of the most noticeable things we picked up on during our stay is the great attention to detail and care that has gone into the design, planning and running of this hotel. Like the number of plug sockets in rooms, the Middle Eastern touch throughout the hotel, and the incredibly helpful staff for whom nothing is too much of an ask. Perfectly embodying the luxury that is associated with the Four Seasons, this Abu Dhabi hotel has elegantly married a trusted brand ethos with local elements – like displaying over 2,000 pieces of culturally connected artwork from local and international artists – to pay homage to the capital’s Arabic culture with a warm welcome and generous hospitality. not too immersed in work. Just do it. Sometimes you are stuck because you have too much to do, or have overwhelmed yourself by all the things you planned to do at once. Just drop everything else and start. Start like that energetic self; like how you were when you decided to leave your job and start a business. Just shake everything off, and start. Do not worry about processes, methods, what would people think, or how things would turn out. Do it and everything else would just follow. The last piece of advice is just keep moving. When I first started CrossFit training last year and I had to run 3 kilometers under half an hour. In the beginnings I would stop for a quick break to catch my breath. My trainer Monika would shout at me and tell me that if I stop I would be tired and I would not be able to finish. She advised me to slow down, perhaps to a light jog, but to not stop running. With time, I stopped less. My body endured more, and I am so proud that I could achieve the targets she set for me. You have to keep moving. When you are stuck and you stop, then you are done. You

faced with freedom to run our business, we sometimes tend to get into a mental traffic jam. We get all sorts of negative ideas penetrating our minds such as: “I don’t know how to approach customers,” “There are so many competitors in the market,” “I don’t have sales skills,” “I won’t be able to land a deal.” These are all common thoughts that many startup entrepreneurs go through. I know I have. I thought that they would think I was too young; that what kind of experience I had to be able to handle X Company’s account. What happens is that if you let that in, then you literally just get stuck in that loop, which is dangerous because when you are stuck, you stop. You stop from moving forward with your business. You perhaps stop altogether if you stayed stuck for a while. eavenly Spa is not like others spa. This sanctuary thrives on bright and airy spaces and feels like a chic health retreat. The spa is a small and charming area made up of six treatment rooms. There is an earthy atmosphere of nature translating from outside to the inside, using impressive interiors like refined, natural materials of stone, water and wood. We start with the signature massage and our therapist Jade asks us if we have any health issues or any areas of concern. We change into a sleek robe and slippers and head into the treatment room which is serene and luxurious. We hop on the massage table and slip in between the silky sheets to start the massage. Jade uses a massage oil that will rid toxins from our body. She uses kneading and pressure techniques to try to get rid of the knots around our neck, shoulders and back and it feels blissful. She also works hard around our stomach, hips and thighs using downward movements to try and reduce the water retention. Jade also massages our head, feet and hands which is a real treat and relaxes us further. After she has massaged our legs we can immediately appreciate how light they feel. We then move onto the Bespoke Facial which uses products from Elemis that are suited to the needs our skin. It includes a thorough skin consultation, a face, scalp, neck, and shoulder massage, and, of course, an

anti-aging face and eye treatment using professional strength formulations and proven marine extract to re-energise cells for firmer, rejuvenated skin. We are asked about our daily skin care regime. We explain our very dry skin situation and Jade immediately recommends Elemis products that could serve well in our daily and weekly skin care routine and, on top of this, she further explains the type of things that could cause dryness and how to help to combat these things. Throughout the treatment, Jade uses various Elemis products, specifically chosen for my skin, to cleanse, tone, moisturise, massage, and remove impurities. She also massages the scalp, neck, shoulders, arms and hands, all whilst I fall into a peaceful nap. The treatment unique facial massage techniques to help lift and firm the skin. By the end, our complexion is brighter, tighter and visibly revitalised –another benefit of the facial which promotes cellular activity. After this blissful experience we are shown to the lovely relaxation area where we are given a berry tea, health cookies, dates and dried apricots. We love this spa for its enthusiastic therapists and the great range of treatments available. You’ll feel uplifted and utterly relaxed. Haute Cuisine Fantastic fare, great service and chic décor. French dining doesn’t get much better than Brasserie Angelique A truly world-class gastronomic experience awaits any visitor at Brasserie Angelique. It’s a restaurant that is not just superb by the region’s standards – it would stand out in any of the world’s foodie capitals. It’s the complete package. Upon entering, you’ll be instantly taken with the supremely elegant and oh-so- European décor that manages to be both highly stylish and comfortably inviting. You will then be impressed by the extremely professional staff who are not only very well presented, but also know both the menu and the beverage list inside-out, and are well-prepared to advise you on both. The most important element of all, the cuisine, is by far and away the best. We settle in at the stunning table and start with the Seared ‘Hokkaido’ Scallops, with North Sea shrimps and braised leeks in a crustacean foamed sauce. This is a very popular dish at the restaurant and it’s not hard to see why. The scallops are superb, and complemented perfectly by the delicious and delicately flavoured sauce. The Salade au Chèvre Chaud, a warm goats cheese salad comes with a delicious topping of toasted goats cheese on a slice of baguette, and a light and tasty salad with a nice subtle Balsamic Vinaigrette that complements the flavour of the goats cheese, the sweetness of the pear and earthiness of the beetroot. For the main event, we went for the Beef Bourguignon which was rich and decadent with the most tender beef and served up with a rich cheese fettucine. This was followed by the Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb, with Gratin Dauphinois, Lamb Jus and Stuffed Baby Vegetables. The lamb is cooked to tender pink perfection, with herb flavours that were different; though better, than any we’d had before. The lamb jus is rich and delicious, and the gratin is creamy and decadent. An experience like this had to end with the dessert, so we chose the Crêpe Suzette, and the Fondant au Chocolate. The crepes are prepared at the table in an entertaining show complete with the flambé of the liqueur,

and the final product is soaked in the tangy, citrus sauce. The chocolate fondant is excellent too, the waiter serves it to you, then cuts the top open and pours in a rich, vanilla cream. The experience at Brasserie Angelique defines fine dining, with a perfect setting and impeccable service magnified by a spectacular menu. The individual flavours of the premium ingredients on each plate are tangible, and yet work with the others perfectly to create dishes that will truly stand out in your memory and have you yearning to come back. Miss Ohlala

Back To The

Beach

Miss Ohlala provides the perfect tips on how to keep your cool with your beach chic wardrobe this summer What could be easier than throwing on a bikini, grabbing a towel and heading to the beach? In fact a lot of women have a real fear of bikini season. It can be hard to feel confident and glamorous when you’re lying on the beach on a baking hot day, in a swimsuit with no makeup on, and with flyaway hair plastered in sunscreen. So here are some of my tips for a practical beach chic wardrobe that will boost your confidence: • Do pick a bikini or one-piece which suits your shape and complexion. If you have a wardrobe of muted colours, swimwear provides a golden opportunity to try out bolder hues and braver patterns. If you have pale skin, avoid white and opt for flattering hues such as coral pinks or cobalt blues. Nautical stripes are always in fashion when it comes to swimwear. • Before you change into your swimwear, cover yourself with a high factor sunscreen and let it sink in. Then ensure you top up at appropriate intervals throughout the day. This helps avoid unsightly burn lines where you have not applied sunscreen right up to the edge of your swimwear. Sunburn is not cool so be careful! • Do follow my grandmother’s advice and procure the largest sunglasses you can, with adequate UV protection, to fight wrinkles. And don’t forget to wear a large-brimmed beach hat to protect your face. Eugenia Kim’s sunhats with witty slogans are delectable. • Flip flops are the only practical footwear for the beach. Although I must admit I do like the current trend for pompom sandals. • Keep accessories to a minimum to avoid looking like an extra from 82

Dynasty. Leave the rocks at home and stick to bohemian chic bracelets or layer long, delicate, chain necklaces. • Don’t bother washing your hair before heading to the beach. Tousle and texturise your hair with dry shampoo and texturising spray for all day beach waves. And use a UV protection hair spray if your hair is inclined to get damaged. • Carry a big straw tote or basket with your belongings in. Water resistant zipper pouches are really useful for storing items separately and to ensure your sunscreen doesn’t leak over everything else. • Bring a kaftan or maxi dress to throw over your swimwear in order to make a stylish dash to the cocktail bar or the bathroom. • Pack rose water or a facial mist to spritz over your face and keep you refreshed. Bring a micro makeup bag with waterproof mascara, bronzer/ highlighter and lip gloss to help you achieve a seamless beach to cocktails transition. • Try to avoid looking at mobile devices for the entire time you spend on the beach. Take a good book or magazine with you, relax and enjoy the sounds of waves lapping on the shore.
