Editor’s Letter P
erhaps it’s because we are in the Gulf, I’m not sure, but I love January. I love it for the fact that we don’t have the blues here – unless you’re one to fall into a post-festive slump, it’s a beautiful place to be this time of year. But I still sympathise with the above drop, so that is why our first issue of 2017 is dedicated to happiness in the form of colour. We love an excuse to do something visually strong and eye-catching here at Ohlala, so we really went for it with our style pages. Colour can be a daunting prospect for some (me) as you can come off being too clownish, ill-informed and questionable about your pairings. We give you a base colour and the key pieces of each hue to have in your wardrobe and then show you how to mix and match. So it’s a bit more formulaic but allows you to make smart and even alternative choices to what you’d normally gravitate to. Our designer focus section sees the incomparable Manish Arora in the spotlight for his sugary sweet use of colours in his collections – a designer who has fused his Indian heritage with his Parisian sensibilities to create fashion that is exceptionally vibrant. We also nod to Tory Burch, who never shies away from colour (in fact, her use of colour is fearless), and we explore her SS17 collection which taps into many a bohemian vibe and makes you feel warm, sunny and hopeful. You’ll find the rest of the issue is equally as spirited, aiming to give you the tools and confidence to put you on the right track for the start of the year. We also indulge (for your purposes, of course) in soul-feeding spa treatments and fine dining that will blow you out the water this year. Never has there been a better time for self-care, than now. So let’s put away any of last year’s woes and hit refresh. Enjoy the issue and I hope it adds a spring to your step.

New year, new issue.
There’s nothing I love better than a fresh start. I have a penchant for change. I’m currently in the middle of moving apartments which will be the perfect start to 2017. Every month or so (usually around deadline) I have a big wardrobe clean out or change the interiors in my home. I narrow in on certain aspects of my home or closet that I no longer like and I can’t possibly do anything thing until I change it. Clothes are pulled out and changed around, furniture is moved, rugs swapped around, new artwork is hung. Then there’s the moment of realisation and panic when I’m the middle of moving everything and it’s in a big mess that I wonder why on earth I am doing this. But I do it because I love a clean slate and it feels good. Everything feels new again and it gives a different
10

perspective. There is nothing that scares me more than being stuck in a rut. Our homes and wardrobes reflect who we are and they should change as we do. I’m not big on strict new year’s resolutions but I’d entice you to try something new this year and make it something that benefits you positively. Find some fantastic new healthy recipes, try a new workout class or exercise or a new make- up look you’ve been wanting to try. Small changes can make a big, positive impact on your life. Happy New Year!

Tory Burch is a woman’s woman. We say this because her SS17 and Holiday Resort are ultra-feminine, polished and intrinsically comfortable – just looking at her designs makes you feel calm, elevated and happy – all the things we women want to feel and stand for when we dress up or down www.ohlala-magazine.com

oday’s woman, no matter her heritage or locality, will naturally gravitate towards a Tory Burch look. It’s hard to pin point, but there’s everything you could want in her designs. Mesmeric prints (that can fix your gaze for long periods of time), sumptuous pearl embellishments, strong strokes of colour alongside playful piecing of fabrics and an overall element of positive Feng Shui. Every piece is well thought out and unique and makes you feel so good. For Spring/Summer 2017, it’s about creating style synergy between the U. S’s East Coast and West Coast. “We begin out East, hostess chic to cool prep. From there, we continue to the free-spirited beach towns of the West Coast. It’s about contrast: graphic motifs and engineered prints, rope and rickrack, pearls and macramé, mules and moccasins, structured and bohemian ease. It’s relaxed and effortless...quintessential American style,” says Tory. When it comes to the silhouettes, it’s about structured tailoring. Think empire waists, widelegged sailor pants and tomboy blazers, which soften as the collection moves West with breezy dresses, peasant blouses and board shorts. You can expect to see voluminous hostess skirts with sweeping hemlines that are paired with crop tops that play on 30

proportion while tunics and caftans round out the collection, putting the emphasis on effortless style. As for the colour palette, it’s all about orchid, pink and green, a classic preppy pairing, where ocean blues and bold reds give way to sunwashed oranges, yellows and periwinkle blues, balanced by soft neutrals of white, ivory and sand. And with this palette comes graphic a graphic garden motif, regatta stripes and nautical prints, followed by bohemian batiks and patchwork florals. A placed wave print subtly references the surf scene and establishes a maritime symbol. The season’s coastal contrast carries through to a mix of fabrics —from linen burlap and cotton knits to silk shantung and delicate fil coupe—and embellishments. Appliqued patches, rickrack. and pearl details provide dimension while fringed macramé and criss-cross lacing lend an easy, undone vibe. Metallic threadwork and moonstones add shimmer and shine.
“It’s all about structured tailoring. Think empire waists, wide-legged sailor pants and tomboy blazers” Topping and finishing off every look, you’ll find that the relaxed, effortless mood extends down to the accessories, from mules and moccasins to pearl-embellished slides and ruffled sneakers from Tory Sport. A convertible handbag with wooden handles brings nostalgic appeal while jewellery draws inspiration from the sea with articulated fish collars and cuffs and cowrie shell charms. www.ohlala-magazine.com

make it
Manish Arora is one of the most unique and auspicious designers of our time. Georgie Bradley sits with the Indian designer to talk Paris, colour and the joys of life It’s difficult to articulate exactly what makes a great designer
but when you first meet Manish Arora, you feel like he’s got ‘it’. That ‘it’ comes in the form of good vibes, a humble demeanor and friend-toall conversation. During an intimate lunch at The Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay ahead of his evening Resort 2017 show at SAKS Fifth Avenue, City Centre Bahrain, he walks in with an entourage but you wouldn’t be able to single him out at first. But his all-black ensemble is decidedly statement-making and the melodies of the chinking charm bracelets adorning his wrists give you that ‘aha’ moment. His voice turns heads. From a “little thing like me” you don’t expect
a deep-throated, gravel. If it wasn’t for his fantastic social warmth and the ability to make everyone feel he’s interested in them, (“Hello there, so great to see you, love what you’re wearing. Welcome, welcome, welcome!”) you would easily quake in your shoes. He is a smoker, explanation number one. Genetics (his father) lends to explanation number two. Beyond that, he is simply blessed with a baritone voicebox that is more alluring than intimidating. Manish calls Paris and Delhi his home. You don’t get more polar opposite than that. “Paris is the most beautiful city in the world,” he says. It was the Bombay born designer’s “dominant work” in Delhi www.ohlala-magazine.com

“The social temperature of the room soars with chat about his love for Paris” during his training and Delhi Fashion Week that got him shooting high in the fashion world and ultimately leading him to London Fashion Week in 2005 after his “different” style was picked up by the attending British Fashion Council. The fashion crowds in London (coming from the world over) gathered in their haute droves and excitable chatter continued until that finally culminated in a move to the fashion capital: Paris. In 2011 Manish was appointed as the creative director of Paco Rabanne, a French fashion house, and he designed two successful collections for them. His collections are sold globally through wellknown stores such as Galeries Lafayette, Joyce, Maria Luisa, Saks 5th Avenue, Selfridges and now available even in the Brand’s first flagship store on Rue Rouget de L’isle, Paris. The social temperature of the room soars with chat about his love for Paris. We all listen in with child-like amazement. He loves everything about it, claiming there is no ugly part of it. Although he’s always travelling between Europe and Asia, Manish’s world is all Paris. As far as career development, Paris has taught Manish “when to stop”. “If I was just an Indian designer, based in India, I would be really over-the-top. But in Paris, every millimeter counts and you’re constantly learning. The moment you think you know everything, it’s over. Fashion is a job. It’s like being a doctor or lawyer. Fashion is about being disciplined and on-time,” says Manish. Being based there in Paris has given him good grounding. “When I began to move more internationally with my work, I wanted to take my country with me – I didn’t want to lose my sense of self and create strictly Western aesthetics. But Paris has also taught me to refine my work,” he notes. Going back to the true meaning of resort, Manish brings a wardrobe that embodies a time to cut loose from winter’s real life and relax in his Resort 17 collection. Drawing from

the lushness of a paradisiac seaside for his inspiration, Manish envisions his season as a perfect holiday moment where everything is right in the world. Just as moods are on the upswing as a holiday nears, this upbeat collection encapsulates the fairy tales we tell ourselves before going away, with visions of endless beaches and perfect snapshots. You’ll also find, developed exclusively for SAKS 5th Avenue Bahrain, abayas and kaftans, to cater to the local customer too. Coming from a wildly different land, Manish has managed to marry up the colourful aesthetics you’d expect from the Indian culture with the sophistication of Parisian wear – without compromising on his heritage. His latest Resort 17 collection sprinkles with joy and colour – the world in which Manish loves to live in – “life is so beautiful, as a brand we believe in this and hope our customers feel it too.”

Get Into A New Routine
Beauty Column
It takes 21 days to form or break a habit. This could be anything from exercising daily, cutting out sugar or generally becoming more active. The first three weeks of a new routine may seem more difficult, but once you have the process down, it becomes much easier. Create a workout or eating plan and stick to it. After a month, it won’t be a question of whether you can or can’t, but it will become something that you just do and hey, you may even start to love it. Bonus.
Make Realistic Changes Sometimes all you need are small changes and minor tweaks. You don’t want to end up being disappointed by setting the bar too high too quickly. By tweaking your workout and eating routines, you can reach your goals more quickly. Weights, along with short intense bouts of cardio will give you faster results than running or lifting alone. By eating smaller portions five to six times a day and trading simple sugars for complex carbs that are high in fiber, you’ll see results quickly too.
Set Your Goals Writing goals down and the reasons why you are setting them, as well as having specific time frames for achieving them is a key step in keeping your resolutions. Achieve your goals by ‘having a set plan and guidelines’ for accomplishing them. Don’t go extreme when creating a resolution, whether it’s regarding organising, diet, or exercise. Saying “I am never eating bread again” is ridiculous. It’s better to say “I am going to eat bread in portion control and make it whole wheat.” If you can accomplish your goals, you’re more apt to continue working on them.
Preparation Is Key
A Clean
Slate It’s a new year which means a chance for a new start. Angela Beitz shares her tips for getting healthy, fit and organised
We’ve all had those days where we eat well because we are super organised and then it gets busy and hectic and it all falls apart by eating a burger for lunch and snacking on cake and chocolate during the 3pm slump. Preparing meals ahead of time and making small snacks such as crunchy crudités, a handful of almonds, berries, a green juice or air-popped popcorn will keep you from reaching to that bag of chips or sweets.
Rest Up Sleeping Beauty had the right idea, it’s been proven time and time again that beauty rest is both real and necessary. The closer you can get to hitting that eight-hour goal, the more likely your skin is to be clear, radiant, and fresh come morning, not to mention your mood! To step up your game even further, take advantage of the time by applying before-bed products that need an extended, uninterrupted amount of time to work their magic, like a beauty-balm or rich night cre www.ohlala-magazine.com

Kandolhu
The Best Kept Secret For people interested in extreme privacy and natural wonders,
Kandolhu is a treasure. Located in northern Maldives and accessible only by plane, the island is a 25-minute flight from Malé. Intensely intimate, Kandolhu is the essence of a barefoot-chic island resort with its only 30 secluded villas scattered in and around its sandy coast. On this tiny island (it takes less than five minutes to walk around it), all the villas are loaded with luxury amenities and an incredible attention to detail. Even down to the music playlist customised for different mood and time of the day, designer furniture sofas by Rolf Benz or bathtub in the water villas with a view of the sea beyond, simply incredible! The lagoon is almost tailor-made for swimming and snorkelling is “All the villas are loaded with luxury amenities literally right on your doorstep. Skip incredible attention to detail” the hassle of boat rides and offshore excursions, jump in from your private jetty and you can spot some parrotfishes, reef sharks, eagle rays, occasional moray eel, you name it. There are also number of resident turtles who live on the reef and are easily approached by snorkelers. More serious divers can partake in the PADI training programme (the dive school offers PADI and SSI certified courses for beginners) and explore the Ari atoll, a spot that most divers agree still offers the best diving in Maldives. Dorianne and Walter, the dive instructors, even proposed fluorescent night dives, a must-do for enthusiasts for big thrills. And for a perfect end to a beautiful day at Kandolhu we highly recommend the sunset cruise on board of the island private sailing yacht ‘Ari Explorer’ and last but not least don’t miss the foie gras at Olives restaurant, one of the four à la carte restaurants available in the resort.

One of the resort’s mission is to introduce Maldivian culture to its “On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it”, The guests through a myriad of activities, cooking class being one of them. Maldives perfectly illustrates this beautiful statement by French author Jules Renard. However, the archipelago nowadays attracts over a million visitors each year and with its second international airport now open, Gan in Addu Atoll and a few new properties in the pipelines, things may not remain quite so idyllic and quiet for much longer. So go soon if you want to keep ahead of the crush.
Best Time To Visit Even though weather is warm year around, the best weather is between November and April. January to March are the driest months, with little rain and low humidity, making this peak season at the resorts (higher rates). However in the last couple of years the weather pattern has been much harder to predict so experts now advise that it may be worth taking your chances in the wet season or during the transitional months, especially if you want to take advantage of seasonally lower hotel rates. For surf aficionados the season is from March to October, which is convenient as resorts will be at their cheapest from May and less crowded! www.ohlala-magazine.com

The rooms have simple yet very modern décor giving it a contemporary feel with feature lights and soft furnishings. The bathrooms are also large with featured a large bathtub, a handshower as well as a rain-shower. We took a long soak in the bathtub with products from revived us for our dinner at JW Steakhouse. The restaurant is a contemporary take on the classic American steakhouse but with a high-end feel and sophisticated décor. The restaurant is large but warm and creates an intimate feeling with separate booths and areas for more private dining. The venue has its own signature feel with masculine high back chairs, oversized menus and large wooden placemats with silver bull horns. We peruse the menu which is made up of tasty starters, a large selection of steak (no surprises there) and some delicious seafood options. To start you can choose from the First Flavours menu which are lighter options such as salads and seafood dishes and then there is a separate Entrée menu with dishes such as Slow Biased Short Ribs, Cornfed Chicken and Scallops and Atlantic

Local Escapes Salmon. We settle on two options from the First Flavours menu; Smoked Loch Fyne Salmon and Australian Wagyu Beef Carpaccio. The smoked salmon is beautifully presented with large pieces of tasty salmon served up with buttery rye bread, lemon, horseradish, capers and shallots. The carpaccio is equally good with thin slices of fresh beef alongside pine nuts, parmesan, rocket oil and smoked Fleur de Sel. These dishes are full of flavor and they perfect starters as they are not too heavy and you won’t risk ruining your appetite for the main event. There are several enticing steak options including everything from USDA Certified Prime Beef, Australian Wagyu, Australian Tenderloin, Master Kobe AA9 and more. We choose a 200 grm Australian Tenderloin and the 300 grm Kettyle Northern Irish Grass Fed Angus Rib Eye which is dry aged for 28 days. We choose the Smoky Cheddar Cream Sauce and grilled Forrest mushrooms to accompany the tenderloin and it’s the perfect mix. The steak cuts like butter and we can’t get over how amazing the cheesy cream sauce it. The Irish Grass Fed Angus is full of flavor and is the perfect choice for something different. We opt for an Argentinean Chimichurri sauce and lobster tail to go with it. We share a serving of the Smokey Fries as not to overload on carbs too much and they are super delicious with paprika, herbs and Gruyere cheese. You would think after all this delicious fare that we couldn’t possibly squeeze in dessert but we are always up for a challenge so we boldly tried their famous JW Cheesecake. Served up with strawberry sorbet, this cheesecake was one of the best we’d tried in a long time. We loved the buttery biscuit base with a rich but light, creamy centre. This is a restaurant that really prides itself on the quality of its meat, and the staff are attentive and friendly. If you aren’t a steak fan or are simply looking for other options you will be spoilt for choice. Kuzbara, the hotel’s all day dining venue serves up an impressive breakfast along with varied lunch options and delicious dinners featuring the best of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Velocity Bar is also well worth a visit, a cool sports bar spread over 2 floors with large TV screens, a DJ and excellent upscale bar food like chicken wings, lobster and burgers. Be sure to visit the gorgeous Saray Spa for some indulging me time. Choose from soothing massages and facials, as well as a wide range of rejuvenating custom spa treatments. The Milk and Honey immersion body treatment is pure bliss using beautiful products to scrub the skin of dead cells to reveal lovely smooth skin. The Saray Custom facial using products by June Jacobs is sure to get your complexion sorted. Be sure to sip a soothing herbal tea in their relaxation room after your treatment overlooking the city. Rest and Rejuvenate We visit Zayna Spa for some much needed pampering to start the new year on the right foot
T
he busy festive period and end to the year can wreak havoc on your body and complexion so it’s important to kick start the new year with a bit of me time to focus on your beauty goals and get you feeling refreshed. Zayna Spa is tucked away on the third floor of the Grand Millennium Al Wahda and is a serene and peaceful spot perfect for getting away from it. We are greeted by our therapist and shown to the relaxation area where we sip a delicious ginger tea while filling out our evaluation form to note any needs and concerns. We are then ushered to our treatment room which is beautifully decorated with soft, muted tones of beige and brown and feels super relaxing with low lighting. We slip into a robe and slippers and are given a foot scrub while we chat to our therapist. We are starting with a deep massage as the tension around our neck, back and shoulders has become a problem. Our therapist explains she will apply a deep pressure that will be uncomfortable but that we just need to breathe through it as we will feel much better and it will unblock tension. She also uses trigger point therapy to tap into our muscle joints and tissue to relieve pain caused by tension and stress. This is not a relaxing massage but a very effective one, especially if 68

you have pain from repetitive movements or sports injuries. The pain around our upper back and shoulder blades is particularly painful but afterwards we feel so relaxed and are so relieved to be able to have more movement. This massage is particularly suitable for people who do a lot of sport, sit all day at their desk and need to unwind. We then move onto the Vitamin C and Sea facial which aims to brighten the skin. This beautiful facial helps to prevent your skin from ageing and to repair past damage. Using Pevonia products, the treatment starts with a double cleanse, removing all make-up and impurities, to optimise blood flow. From here our skin was assessed to see areas that needed more attention and then steam was applied so that our therapist could perform some extractions to really clean out our pores. Then a mask is applied to brighten and rejuvenate tired skin and it’s also superb for fine lines. Our skin is then massaged with a serum and then the facial finishes with a Vitamin C concentrate to give the skin a plump effect and a big boost. The products work to thoroughly hydrate and nourish the skin, leaving it with a luminous glow where our complexion was smooth and firm. Highly recommended. Prices start at Dhs500. Angeles, has the ambience of a nightclub with the superb food and waiting staff of a five-star restaurant and is well worth a visit. Tucked away in The Collection opposite The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Koi is perfect for an intimate dinner or a group gathering. Koi’s dedicated sushi bar, lounge and terrace for outdoor dining will easily impress you long before your food even arrives. Its high ceilings, chandeliers, bamboo and dimly lit tables set a distinctly chilled out mood. The menu is impressive with a selection of thoroughly modern takes on traditional Japanese dishes. The food utilises local and international ingredients and it’s best to kick off your evening with a selection of their starters perfect for sharing. Popular signature shared plates are Crispy Rice topped with Spicy Tuna, Spicy Crunchy Yellowtail Tartare, Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, Salmon Carpaccio along with miso soup and edamame. We try all of these (in the name of research of course) and all dishes are full of flavour and are delicious. Fresh, simple ingredients are key here and Koi manages to deliver time after time. The standout dish was the Salmon Carpaccio – wafer thin slices of fresh and cold salmon topped with black truffles and ponzu dressing. You can definitely make a meal just out of the starters as all options are fantastic and as mentioned they are perfect for sharing so if you wanted to just pop by for drinks and a few bites this would be an evening well spent. When choosing main dishes there are plenty of enticing options. Dishes such as sautéed tiger prawns, pan seared salmon and braised Wagyu short ribs jump out at us. With the help of our knowledgeable and attentive waiter, we order Koi’s signature dishes – Miso Bronzed Black Cod and the Kobe Style Fillet Mignon. The black cod is spot, the fish flaky and flavoursome as all good black cod should be. The Wagyu however is the best dish of the evening. The grain fed Wagyu strip arrives with a small serving of truffle hatcho miso and grilled eggplant and kabocha squash. The Koi experience is a guarantee of exceptional food, faultless service, and sophisticated atmosphere. The staff at Koi are so helpful and friendly and it really makes the experience so much better. There are so many amazing dishes that you will want to try and it’s sure to become a favourite dining spot. Bags of Style Abu Dhabi style blogger, Soraya Hennessy has launched her unique collection of bags with a nod to her Venezuelean heritage
72
www.ohlala-magazine.com
What’s the inspiration behind your brand, Soraya Hennessy?
Ohlala Spotlight
I started Soraya Hennessy as a way to share a positive message about my native country, Venezuela. I also wanted to start a complementary business to my fashion and travel blog Chic Flavours. My goal with Soraya Hennessy is to show others around the world the beautiful work of Wayuu artisan women. The Wayuu (pronounced “Wah-You”) are a native ethnic group living on the border of Venezuela and Colombia. A big part of the Wayuu culture is the art of weaving designs in mochilas (buckets bags), chinchorros (hammocks), and mantas (robes). The technique has been passed on by women from generation to generation. Often the girls start weaving from the tender age of eight years old. My Wayuu heritage comes from my mother side, I grew up seeing my mother and grandmother wearing mochilas on a daily basis. Where did the label start? Take us to the beginning... The debut collection has been eight months in the making. I designed one clutch and started wearing it on my various social media channels waiting for feedback. I wasn’t sure how people were going to react, but sure enough, my followers loved the bags! I then flew to Venezuela and met with my Mum to learn more about the different materials used to make each bag. We bought some material, built our e-commerce site and continued to network with both US and UAE based press. We had the opportunity to launch Soraya Hennessy in early October at Saadiyat Beach Club in Abu Dhabi. Since then we have received amazing local and international support. What would you say is your design philosophy? Soraya Hennessy’s philosophy is to offer a modern twist to the traditional handmade crochet bucket bag, known as a mochila. Soraya Hennessy is the first to introduce one liners and fun catchy words hand weaved into the mochilas such as, “#fiesta”, “habibi” and “yalla”. We want our bags to bring happiness and a sense of wanderlust. You are an advocate of the work of Wayuu artisan women, explain what this is important to you? The work of Wayuu artisans is close to my heart. I’m half Wayuu from my mother’s side and grew up wearing handmade products such as ‘mochilas’ bucket bags. I had a ‘chinchorro’ hammock hanging in my room and always found myself intrigued by their colorful and intricate designs. What is the process of creating one of your bags? How long does it take? All of the bags are 100% handmade in Maracaibo, Venezuela. I designed each bag, decided on the color, accessories, strap, and phrases. I then forward the design to my mom who is in Venezuela who works with a group of artisan Wayuu women in my native Venezuela to make these design come to life. One bag can take up to 7 days to make. What does Venezuelan fashion mean to you? How has it made a difference in the world around you? Venezuela’s fashion is colorful and lively and it has made me who I am today. I try to always wear a pop of color even when I lived in Chicago and experienced some frigid cold weather. My upbringing in Venezuela and Venezuelan fashion means happiness, adventurous and eye catching designs. Who or what inspires you? My inspiration has always been my travels! Whenever I travel, I create a “Note” memo on my iPhone, titled with the city or place I’m visiting. I simply
write down different things that inspire me or catch my eye. For example, I was in Jamaica last year and I’ve never seen so many bright colored houses. I didn’t expect these colors to go well together, but, I noted these colors and a few months later I went back to these notes for inspiration for my handbags. I also love to incorporate language such as “Habibi” and “Yalla.”These words cross different cultural and ethnic barriers and are recognised by anyone who has spent some time in the UAE. Which are the must-have bags in a woman’s wardrobe? Every woman needs a small black evening clutch, a big tote for everyday or work, and a fun summer bag like a Soraya Hennessy bucket bag. What is the next step for your brand? Since our successful launch in September 2016, we’ve been focused on growing our customer base and inventory in different boutiques around the GCC and US. Over the next few months, we are focused on showcasing our brand around different pop-ups event in the UAE and introducing new products such as hammocks, beach baskets, hats and beach caftans. Smart fitness There’s never been a better time to get into shape, set new goals and try a new form of exercise. We speak to Lena and Julie from the female team at The Body Company to find out how EMS training can change the way you work out while saving time and giving you results 74
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Ohlala Spotlight compared to a several hours of conventional gym training! A quick fix solution, so to say. What will people experience when they come to The Body Company? The Body Company is all about personal fitness training. Our experienced coaches are dedicated to get the maximum out of the short training classes. The exercises are designed to achieve the result that our clients wish to see: Toned arms and legs, a slim waist and a flat tummy. We offer introductory classes for beginners to get an assessment of each individual training level. Our clients can decide if they like to train one-to-one with personal trainer or semi private with friends. Who is it designed for and how does it work for women? Thanks to the time efficient classes, EMS is highly appreciated by those with a busy schedule! The 20-minute training class can easily be fitted into your lunch break! So for all of you working mums, busy bees, or those who are simply too lazy for a normal gym round; we got your back. EMS training has no age limit and because of the low impact on joints and tendons it is also a great alternative for those who suffer from back pain or knee injuries. Since there are no side effects to the training (except for getting toned and fit) we can recommend EMS Training for almost everybody, however it is not advised for women to train during pregnancy. What advice would you give to women about the preconception that muscle training will bulk them up too much? If you’re not training with heavy weights to become the next Arnold Schwarzenegger, muscle training won’t bulk you up. In fact it is proven to be the most effective training for weight loss, since your muscles are responsible for your calorie consumption: the more muscle you have the more energy you burn. However EMS training does not focus on building up a muscle volume but is rather used to increase the muscles’ density and resistance. The result is a long and lean muscle structure rather than a bulked and short muscle.
What is EMS training?
What sort of dietary advice would you give to clients to help boost the experience? We are not big fan of diets, because they are always temporary and shock your system (that’s basically why they work – not because they are healthy). Once you change back to your old eating behavior the body is shocked again and shows a negative response. So rather than sticking to a certain diet we believe that a lifestyle change is needed for long term results. And that is quite simple: you are what you eat, so try to avoid industrial packaged foods and embrace what mother nature has to offer, count nutrients instead of calories and get into the kitchen a little more often!
How does it work? For our training classes you will be wearing a full body suit which sends electronic impulses directly to your muscle cells. This sounds very futuristic, but it is a method that has been used for decades to cure muscular deficits in classic physiotherapy. The feeling of the impulses can be described as a vibration and most of the people would start laughing in their first session because it tickles them so much. But the impulses do not only tickle; during the workout session they increase the effect of each muscle contraction and make it possible to exercise an effective full body workout which can be
How much does it cost and how many sessions do you need? You can expect to see the first results of the training after 6-8 sessions. We recommend 2 classes per week. Consider this as the kick-off! Once you’re on the fitness-track you will get addicted to that feeling of how loose your clothes feel all of a sudden. Our memberships are available for 2,4 or 12 months and prices start at 1,200 Dhs per month.
Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is an innovative Fitness and Beauty technology that has become a popular alternative to the conventional fitness training. When we look at the benefits of the impulse training it becomes clear why: strength, resistance, endurance and flexibility can be noticeably improved in no time, skin gets a youthful glow and connective tissue feels firm and toned (bye bye cellulite, we will not miss you at all). The training activates the whole metabolic system and burns a lot of calories, even up to 12 hours after the training. And - saving the best for last - the training sessions are only 20 minutes!

power Woman
Hands up if you make
resolutions every year and struggle to keep them. My hand is firmly in the air! I used to make the same resolutions every year…. join a gym, be punctual, travel more, be more confident… blah, blah, blah. You know what I mean, right? The main problem with most of my resolutions was that they were too grand and too generic. So, I ditched making new year’s resolutions. Instead at the start of each month, I resolve to make one or more small changes to my lifestyle. Here are some of my tips that might be useful to you this month.
Kick The Insta-Insomnia Habit
New Year’s Resolutions
My definition of any early night means getting into bed and going to sleep. Many of us are guilty of going to bed early with the intention of securing 8 hours of beauty sleep. However, once in bed we unconsciously delay sleep. We hold our smart phones inches from our eyes and trawl through social media feeds. Give your eyes 30 minutes’ break from your mobile before you plan on sleeping. I recommend leaving your mobile in another room but I can already hear your sharp intake of breath. Leave our mobile babies in another room, are you crazy? Ok, I hear you. This month make your mobile work for you to guarantee 8 hours’ sleep. Take advantage of the many relaxation and sleep apps that are out there. I regularly use the Andrew Johnson sleep app (the Relax + version is free). It involves some spoken hypnotic sleep suggestions combined with relaxing music. It switches off automatically and often I am sound asleep before the 20 minute session is complete. Give it a try and take control of your sleepy-time!
30 minutes late for everything. If you regularly attend events or networking sessions and were not born with the lion’s share of confidence (or you’re not the host) consider the art of punctuality. If you arrive at networking events late it appears that everyone knows everyone. People have already formed small clicks and are chatting happily as if they have known or worked together for years. Fifteen minutes is not a long time but its long enough for us humans to form little bubbles of comfort that make it harder for late comers to penetrate. At your next event try being the early bird.
Don’t Sweat It
There is nothing more eyecatching (and I don’t mean in a good way) than seeing someone in the most amazing silk Lanvin dress accessorised by two massive sweat patches under her arms (cue eye covering emoji). If this happens to you at work or at an event and you have bought your way through every antiperspirant on the supermarket shelves then try one of the super-deodorants that have been clinically tested, such as Driclor. Driclor was formulated to combat hyperhidrosis. It works to significantly reduce and eventually stop problem sweating. It is the new hero of expensive garments not wishing to be customised by ugly sweat strains. [Dricor and similar products are available at most pharmacies]. Start 2017 with small tangible goals each month to improve your lifestyle. Grand non-specific resolutions made once a year tend to be rolled out year after year without any real impact.

Miss Ohlala
There’s No Place Like Home Miss Ohlala reminisces over Christmas parties which evoked the senses
December flew by in a whirlwind of fun. Party season with friends and family is always the best time of the year. Much to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed taking my daughter to the Winter Wonderland on Al Maryah Island. Who knew that watching adults dressed in Alice in Wonderland costumes or dancing whilst painted head to toe in green, as toy soldiers, could be entertaining for all ages? In order to make any event stand out in December, in a calendar packed full of festive events, you need to make it special. And the Rosewood Abu Dhabi certainly achieved that. I attended a Rosewood Hotel Confidential event at La Cava and it was magical. From the moment we reached the stairs to La Cava the quintessential Christmas smell of mulled wine, mingled with gingerbread and candles, wafted up the stairs. We were welcomed into the room by their attentive and charming staff and were immediately made to feel at home. The cellar is dark and enticing and was beautifully lit that night with clusters of white pillar candles which reflected off the dark mirrored and wood surfaces. I am a huge fan of tapas so I was delighted to see big truckles of cheese and stands with meats being carved on the bone. What better way to relax after a hard day’s work than eat tapas and wine in good company? And the company was as well dressed as always. One joy of La Cava from a fashion aficionado’s perspective is that it is chilled enough all year round to wear one’s winter wardrobe. Any chance to 82

get out ones boots and faux fur stoles in this country must be grabbed by the horns. Attention to detail is critical for any event to be successful. In particular, events during the festive season must be distinctive in order to stand out. This event felt truly special as the team had created a homely feel in La Cava and the chefs had taken time to create beautifully designed deserts featuring Santa Claus and candy canes sculpted out of icing. The effort was palpable and much appreciated. As a parting gesture, we were each presented with a goody bag containing a beautifully decorated Christmas cake. And this was not just a cupcake-sized cake for one. This was a cake that I could proudly share with friends or family, which saved me the need to bake my own! I was inspired to host a tapas party of my own. I spent hours in my kitchen researching recipes and creating various tapas and pintxos from scratch, but it was worth the effort. In particular the serrano ham and manchego croquetas and pancetta wrapped dates stuffed with goat’s cheese were devoured by my guests. I enjoyed decorating my house with Christmas decorations, lighting scented candles which smelt of pine cones and open fires, and welcoming guests into my house. Most of all, I enjoyed spending time with close friends who I can always rely on to fill the house with laughter. It’s times like these when I truly appreciate how lucky I am to be living as an expat in Abu Dhabi with a happy family and wonderful friends. There’s No Place Like Home.
