s is usually the case with morning emails, the main bulk are ‘trashable’ just as they are, sitting in the Inbox, unopened. A bit harsh you say, but it’s a familiar scene of PR heavy, mass sent, impersonal and irrelevant material. One day though, layered within said mail, I received a link to a highlight of Lanvin’s photo exhibition, which takes place in Paris’ Maison Européenne de la Photographie until the end of October. I’m sure you’ll share my enthusiasm when I say the images had me open-mouthed and oscillating my head in awe. For all those kinds of emails that ping haphazardly, there’s always one that cements a perfect feature right there and then and elicits a happy dance. We at Ohlala strive for visual appeal. While the digital world has shifted the dynamics of publishing and allowed for so many creative possibilities of editorial execution, it’s perhaps made print a little stagnant. But it’s also made the physical product that much more sacred. Having big, beautiful, strong and luxurious images spread over several pages is our monthly mission and we relish the “ooh and aah” moments when dreamy shoots take shape. The behind-the-scenes images of the makings of Lanvin made us realise how much we love photography. We want our magazine to be coffee-table ready; something that you want to leave open, just like that. So enjoy the power of photography in this month’s issue, from our fashion fixes, Rami Kadi’s uber edgy lookbook, the best of stand-out beauty and our glorious gastronomic guide - never underestimate the prowess it takes to translate mouthwatering food on the page!

The World
of Lanvin The iconic fashion house is having a moment. You could argue Lanvin has claimed so many moments in couture history, but now there’s an exhibition honouring the French fashion house’s trajectory at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. In a series of behind-the-scenes images, these exquisite manifestations give a glimpse into Lanvin’s collections over the years. Having been founded in 1889, the French couture house is the oldest staple of luxury women’s ready-to-wear, men’s ready-to-wear, men’s bespoke and made-to-measure, accessories, children’s wear and bridal collection. The humble, effervescent Alber Elbaz has been in Lanvin’s artistic director hot seat since 2001. His instantly likeable qualities draws everyone in. His highly elegant background in fashion lends credence to what he has created with Lanvin through time. He was born in Casablanca and raised in Israel, where he graduated from Shenkar College, the Tel Aviv School of Fashion and Textiles. He then trained in New York, where for seven years (from 1989 to 1996) he was the righthand man of Geoffrey Beene, the High Society American couturier. In September 1996, he took over as head Prêt-à-Porter designer for Guy Laroche until 1998. He successfully produced collections there from Autumn-Winter 1997 to Spring 1999. On 2nd November 1998, he took over from Yves Saint-Laurent as artistic director for the Yves Saint-Laurent Rive Gauche collections until 2000. His Autumn-Winter 1999, Spring38

Summer 2000 and Autumn-Winter 2000 collections managed to perpetuate a style and successfully marry the past and the future. For Lanvin, he recommends an urban elegance where emotion and optimism kindle desire. He reconciles modernity and femininity, technique and originality, sensuality and creativity. The exhibition pays homage not only to the creative process but to the digital age, where we live through our screens, “We no longer look; we film. We no longer listen; we tape. And we no longer talk; we post,” says Alber. Being consciously aware of how screens are a second critic to his work, he says: “What looks good on the screen is not necessarily going to look good or feel comfortable on the body.” Man of the The digital medium has thrown the Moment Alber was balance of power into a new dimension selected to be on the TIME 100 of criticism, where Lanvin is now aiming list of the most influential to create a world of more volume, moving people in the world for 2007 away from flatness. These images reveal the intimacy of the construction process, the attention to detail of the technical work and the magic of the catwalk shows. The exhibition is on till 31 October 2015

C
an you tell us about the brief from Jo Malone London?
The first thing that Jo Malone London showed me was some incredibly vivid orientalist paintings from the nineteenth century. They wanted to create a fragrance that captured the bohemian spirit of adventure from the Victorians, who travelled the world collecting intriguing objects, to the vibrant hedonism of the sixties to the modern day bohemian. With Jo Malone London the process is always very immersive so I looked forward to really delving into the bohemian world.
Where did you look for inspiration?
Jo Malone London took me on a journey to the home of the orientalist painter, Frederick Leighton. Leighton House is a hidden gem in Holland Park, London. It was built as an incredibly decadent showcase for his collection of more than 1,000 tiles collected in the Middle East and is filled with vibrant pattern. One of his paintings, Flaming June, was particularly inspiring. I liked the idea of travelling through the picture to discover the vivid colour, texture and atmosphere of the interiors and wanted to recreate these layers in the scent. From there we looked at places like Marrakesh and Tangiers which were bohemian havens in the sixties for people such as the Rolling Stones to literary characters like Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited. We were intrigued by figures like the London fashion designer Thea Porter, the society beauty Talitha Getty and the iconic Loulou de la Falaise with her bohemian style. Jo Malone London wanted to draw on this inspiration but also bring a sense of modernity to the scent. We looked at what the bohemian spirit means today from new bohemian fashion with its eclectic prints, colourful pattern and drapery to a love of travel off the beaten track.
What do you think is special and current about the new bohemian mindset?
For me the new bohemian celebrates a state of mind without boundaries. They are free-thinkers who celebrate authenticity and intensity. A true sense of adventure is at the heart of the new bohemian spirit for me.
Mimosa & Cardamom is a floriental fragrance. How did you give it a Jo Malone London signature?
When Jo Malone London told me they wanted a floriental fragrance to capture this bohemian story I knew straight away that they would be looking for a new approach. They wanted to bring a sense of modernity to the traditional construction and to give it a twist. The classic floriental is made with florals 64

inspired by Mimosa?
like orange blossom, jasmine or rose. All are infused with an oriental richness and sophistication. They stand out because of their unique blend of warmth and sensuality. Jo Malone London wanted to update this idea with mimosa as the main ingredient which is innovative in itself. I was very inspired by this starting point. In fragrance history, mimosa had not been revisited for a long time so it was an intriguing challenge. I then wanted to create something bold and captivating around it. We chose the cool spice, cardamom, as it would add a new energy. I love its thrilling freshness and sparkling effect. We knew we had found an unusual yet perfect pairing; the vibration of the cardamom, an unexpected twist, with the sensual softness of mimosa. They are both radiant. Mimosa is the warm sun, cardamom the bright light.
Tell us a little bit about how you were 66
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Mimosa & Cardamom is infused with sensuality and much of this comes from the mimosa itself, an unusual powdery and honeyed floral that perfectly captures the bohemian character. I had a strong memory of the mimosa flower which made it even more exciting to work with. It has always reminded me of my childhood and winter weekends spent near the coast in the South of France. It was a joy to see these blooms again when Jo Malone London took me to see the mimosa growing in the Tanneron Mountains in Provence. It was a cold February day with bright blue skies. The scent and spectacle of the fluffy yellow flowers was unbelievable, mimosa is the golden sun of winter! I took some branches back from Tanneron with me and put them in my office so every day I could be inspired by the smell of the bright yellow pompoms. I chose to use a sumptuous absolute of Mimosa from the South of France, rich with a multifaceted character to capture the beauty of these flowers.
Can you tell us more about the Mimosa absolute? I worked with a 100% natural mimosa extract, sourced from Provence. The young branches are harvested by hand and the extraction is carried out immediately within two to three hours on fresh flowers in Grasse and Tourrettes. The flowers harvested in the Tanneron are traditionally processed: primary solvent extraction to produce the concrete, then a secondary extraction with alcohol to obtain the absolute. 1Kg of absolute is obtained with 500Kg of Mimosa. Mimosa is a symbol of elegance, simplicity, tenderness and friendship. Behind its apparent fragility, the flower captures a strong feminine energy. Mimosa absolute is the ultimate reference for green
and floral, powdery long-lasting notes. A slight woody and honeyed note differentiates it from other origins.
How did this work with the rest of the fragrance? The fragrance has a modern floriental signature. The ingredients are layered to evoke colour and texture, almost like a rich and sumptuous orientalist interior or the layers of contrasting fabric used in bohemian fashion. The warm floral heart around mimosa is filled with another powdery tonality brought by heliotrope. This sensuous note adds a feminine creaminess with its almond tones. Then damask rose essence is exquisitely luxurious, and strengthens the honeyed character of mimosa. On top, the freshness of cardamom is enlightened by transparent floral notes of nymphaea and green violet leaves. Much of the sensuality is driven by tonka bean absolute, a classic floriental ingredient that is very refined and elegant and gives the fragrance its oriental character. Warm, balsamic, almondy and vanillic, its richness is irresistibly addictive. Sandalwood and musk enrich this sensuality, and make the fragrance more intense and diffusive.
Was there one point on the journey that was the hardest or most challenging? I think modernising the mimosa was both the biggest challenge and biggest opportunity. This ingredient hasn’t been reinterpreted for a long time in perfumery so it was a real chance to do something new and innovative and I wanted to embrace this. I have worked with it before but never as a main ingredient. We used it in a particularly high dosage.
Who do you imagine wearing this fragrance?
Someone open-minded, comfortable in themselves with an effortless sense of style and a love of adventure.

Good as Gold
In the next chapter of the Michael Kors Fragrance empire, The Gold Collection has hit the scene. Each of the three individual scents were designed to reflect the opulence and luxury of the highly prized metal - from white, to rose, to 24K gold. The advertising campaign, captured by Mario Testino, features a seductively bronzed Karmen Pedaru, Michael Kors’ muse, wearing a glamorous array of mixed metallic accessories that radiates the Michael Kors luxe gold lifestyle. He gives us a few golden moments to talk about his vision. The Inspiration
“I’ve always loved gold - to me, there’s nothing more glamorous and opulent than the shimmer of gold, especially on sun-kissed skin. A luxe fragrance is the finishing touch for any girl.”
Golden Days
“There are so many fabulous gold moments in classic Hollywood movies. There was Katharine Hepburn in the gold lamé gown in Bringing up Baby - the one that rips. I love Katharine Hepburn and that scene makes me laugh every time. Grace Kelly literally glowed in a gold gown in To Catch a Thief. And of course, there was the pleated gold lamé dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the censors thought it was so risqué they only allowed it to be shown from the back. And last but most opulently, there was Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra.” 68
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Best of Three
“The idea behind the fragrances is more about individual preferences. Sometimes a woman wakes up and she’s feeling powerful and she puts on white gold. Other times she wants to be a little more romantic so she slips on rose gold. Or she wants to be completely glamorous so she wears yellow gold. And then there are women who only wear one metal or the other. I think when you smell all three fragrances you’ll find the one, or two, or three that work for you. There’s also going to be a new jewellry collection to complement these fragrances.”
Quick Fire
“The three words that come to mind when I hear gold are: opulent, luxurious, glamorous.”
Final Remarks
“I think you have to be very confident to wear head-to-toe gold, and I’d say keep the makeup and hairstyle to a minimum.”
“Sometimes a woman wakes up and she’s feeling powerful and puts on white gold. Other times she wants to be a little more romantic so she slips on rose gold. Or she wants to be completely glamorous and wear yellow gold”

In a perfect world, I would treat myself to a facial
every week. Overkill I hear you say? Maybe. But here’s the thing. I am a self-confessed facial addict. Elizabeth Taylor may have had her love affair with jewellery but my love affair is all about exfoliating, masks and serums. Call me a total skincare nerd but I sold my soul when I was 17 when I first set foot in a spa and never looked back. There’s something so deliciously indulgent about being seriously pampered while at the same time having gorgeous products applied to your face that give your skin a good clean out while also preventing ageing. One of the other reasons I am a die-hard facial fan is that I love the feeling that my skin is authentically clean combined with the glorious achievement of super plumped up and hydrated skin. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is just so much more going on with your face than the naked eye can see and no matter how good your at-home routine is, it’s just not going to cut it. Yes, even if you own a Clarisonic you still need regular facials. Living in this region, we are constantly battling environmental factors such as year round air-conditioning and extreme heat and humidity that cause all sorts of skin woes such as congestion, breakouts and skin so dry or so oily that it’s enough to bring you to tears. Treating yourself to a super deep-clean facial once a month will really get results and help combat these issues.
“I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is just so much more going on with your face than the naked eye can see and no matter how good your at-home routine is, it’s just not going to cut it”
Saving Face With so much pressure to achieve a flawless complexion these days, Angela Beitz discusses her fixation with facials. 74
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Facials have come such a long way since a couple of slices of cucumber were placed over your eyes while a wipe-on, wipe-off technique was applied to the face. Case in point, the facials that are available in our fair city are enough to see you addicted for life. Gold facial? Why not. Diamond facial? Well, it would be rude not to. Caviar? Slather it on please. If you are looking for luxury facials you can’t do much better than these and they are the types of facials that are perfect for a bit of ‘me time’. Now before you judge me for being totally superficial, I’m mostly interested in results-oriented facials and products that actually work. Top of my list are fruit acid peels, DNA serums (of course it’s not actual DNA but rather ‘live ingredients’ for rejuvenating your skin) and beautiful organic products that are free of parabens and preservatives. These types of facials will immediately revive and illuminate dull, stressed skin and take away that awful lacklustre feeling. If you’ve never tried a facial or feel you don’t have time, I urge you to go just once. It simply makes you feel so much better no matter how bad your day is. You won’t be sorry.

Time for Tiffin If you’re looking to reignite your love for Indian cuisine over a power lunch, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain’s Rasoi by Vineet Bhatia is the ultimate thrill. As a student I would get a ready made, two part plastic container of Chicken Tikka Masala and Pilau Rice from Tesco, pop it in the oven and 25 minutes later, it did the job it needed to do: feed me and keep me full till the next day. Like most of the untaught, my understanding of Indian cuisine was limited to a spectrum of spice and more spice with more sauce than meat but also knowing it’s the best kind of frugal food. When the now thrice starred Michelin chef Vineet Bhatia arrived in London, Indian cuisine as it stood, needed a bit of a food lift. In the early 76

noughties he presented a philosophy to diners that didn’t compromise on flavours or tradition, but enhanced and added a humble but luxurious quality to dishes. Applying expert technique to the most obscure ingredients, Vineet brought out the best of each dish, with a contemporary twist free of gimmick and pretense. Enter the new age of Indian food appreciation. Fast forward to 2015, the restaurateur has made his mark in Bahrain to rave reception. Rasoi by Vineet, located in The Gulf Hotel Bahrain, is a mirage of glamour and opulence. The curtains of jewels and shimmer surfaces are fantastic in their consciously kitschy way, without overloading the eye. We had come to sample the Tiffin Lunch, where every day there’s a different menu to be enjoyed among business professionals and guests alike. Tiffins, the three to four stacks of stainless steel compartments are a staple of Indian cuisine. The

culture surrounding tiffins dates back to Colonial times where the painstaking heat meant lighter meals were more accommodating for the languid days. The tiffin lunchbox provides a compact, portable and more importantly homemade meal with satiating flavours. Side note, if you haven’t seen The Lunchbox (2013), you must - it’s a heartwarming education. We were treated to Tiffin Tuesday - a shareable mix of Murg Makhanwala, Dal Tadka, Punjabi Chole, Jeera Pulao, Kachumber with Pomegranate Raita. You can also add on a Kabab platter which includes Lamb Seekh and Macchi Tikki. The names are melodically alien, but the food is energising and shouting with flavours. On top of the Tiffin Lunch we ordered a few other items from the a la carte menu and were presented with a modern take on Sambhar Podi Lobster - with south Indian spices, lemon peanut rice, beetroot moilee - the most intense fuschia you’ll ever see on a plate - with coconut coriander chutney. The Asparagus Koftas on a bed of mushroom khichdi was simply glorious, lighter than air and incredibly moreish. Our dessert spread saw rose petals in the form of cake and a Gulabjamun, Blueberry Basundi with Cardamom Foam which were the perfect finale. The Tiffin Lunch is BD 11 ++ or BD 14 ++ with a Kabab Platter, available on weekdays, Sunday Thursday. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Having worked in the culinary industry for the past 17 years, I’ve had some incredible experiences and worked in many great establishments. I am originally South African and grew up in Durban. I left Durban and headed for the United Kingdom at the age of 17 to pursue my dream of becoming a chef. Apple Wood Smoked Salmon & Labneh Mousse Ingredients
300g fresh Scottish salmon- skin on, scaled, deboned 1kg Apple wood chips (for the smoking, available at Manazel) 2g Maldon rock salt 2g White sugar Pinch chopped dill Pinch chopped parsley 150g Labneh 50ml Whipped cream-unsweetend 2tsp Gelatine powder 2tsp lemon juice Salt and pepper for seasoning Equipment
BBQ- with a lid and wood Method
Mix the salt, sugar, parsley and dill and spread it over the top of your salmon fillet. Make a small wood fire in the corner of your BBQ. Once the wood is burning spread ½ of your wood chips (pre soaked in water for 30min) over the flames, this will create the smoke. Place your salmon skin side down in the corner opposite the fire so there is no direct heat. Close the lid and let it smoke for 10min. Add the remaining wood chips and smoke for a further 5 min. Remove from the BBQ and refrigerate for an hour. Once cooled you can slice to your preferred size. To make the labneh mousse, place the labneh in a large mixing bowl and whisk until smooth. Whisk in the lemon juice and season. Fold in the whipped cream into the labneh. Follow the instructions on the packet of your powdered gelatin, add the gelatin to the mousse mixture. Spoon the mousse into your choice of mould and let in set in the refrigerator (1 hour).
Churros Ingredients
6 tbsp unsalted butter 1 tsp kosher salt 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 stick cinnamon 1 tbsp ground cinnamon 2 1/4 cups flour 1 egg 2 cups sugar Canola oil, for frying Method
Bring butter, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, and 2 1/4 cups water to a boil in a 4-qt. saucepan over medium-high heat. Remove and discard cinnamon, and add flour; cook, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until a smooth dough forms, about 5 minutes. Transfer dough to a bowl, and add egg; stir vigorously until dough is smooth. Transfer dough into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle and set aside. Meanwhile, combine sugar and ground cinnamon in a large baking tray. Pour oil to a depth of 2” in an 8-qt. Dutch oven; heat over medium-high heat until a deep-fry thermometer reads 400°. Working in batches, hold piping bag above oil, and pipe about four 5 lengths of dough. Fry, turning often, until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain briefly, and then transfer to the baking tray with cinnamon-sugar mixture, and quickly shake or roll until evenly coated. Repeat with remaining dough in piping bag.

The Ultimate Detoxifying Body Cocoon
84
www.ohlala-magazine.com
If you’re looking to while away a few hours in pure luxury, head to The Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay to experience a treatment that will restore your body into perfect form.
Spa Review
The soaring architectural statement of The Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay exists not only on the outside, but in the majestic corridors of The Spa too, sprawled across four buildings. The entrance is mesmerically palatial, with a glittering chandelier, flanked by marble columns, influenced by Moroccan and Turkish grandeur. You hear the echoes of lapping water and the serene spa smells lead you to its inviting reception. We had come to indulge in the ultimate detoxifying body cocoon over a two hour period - something different to your typical massage. After a warm and friendly consultation, we were assigned a locker with ample space, given clever sandals (great grips) and a supreme bathrobe (like wearing a pillow). Before going into the treatment room you sit in a calm, white-cream coloured room and drink tea if you so wish. In the softly lit treatment room, a tray of all the oils, exfoliants and masks were presented in small dishes to sample. Since this is a unique treatment, you are guided along the way, and are informed of each step and what each brings to your body. The massage table is more mattress than table, the face rest is lined with a packet of gel so as to cushion your cheekbones - this is a first for us and it makes all the difference. And although this treatment focuses on the entire body by ‘cocooning’ it with oils, clay masks and moisturisers, you can ask your therapist to focus on certain parts of your body that need most attention - for us it’s our back and head - which were soothed with perfect pressure. The first oil applied is a toxicleanse massage oil made up of cypress, juniper berry, grapefruit, lemon and geranium. It helps the body eliminate toxins and impurities - and is excellent for combating cellulite and improving your circulation. As the therapist massaged the oil from top to toe, the consistency was light and not heavy in the way oil tends to be. Then comes the organic green tea salt therapy exfoliant, with Himalayan salt, green tea, eucalyptus and sandalwood powder. Again, it wasn’t rough on the skin,
but luxurious and earthy, leaving the skin soft and refreshed. After you wash it off in the shower inside the treatment room, it’s time for the body mask. The marine mineral body mask is an Australian green clay of seaweed, kelp, grapefruit and juniper berry. As the therapist applied it, you feel both hot and cold snaps - in a way that feels like the body is properly detoxing. For the face, it’s a purifying green argiletz clay mask of burdock root and spike lavender, containing a high amount of vitamins and antioxidants to remove impurities. You’re then wrapped up for the next half hour or so while your therapist gives you a sleep inducing head massage. The final step, after washing off the clay, is the application of the enlivening body lotion: hazelnut oil, macadamia oil, shea butter and geranium which definitely lifts your mood and makes you feel like you’ve got new skin. This sumptuous treatment is every bit relaxing and kind to the skin - the grounds of The Spa are beautifully atmospheric and otherworldly - a perfect go-to treat.

The Cadillac CTS The Cadillac CTS is beautiful, luxurious, practical and safe. It also costs less than other cars in its class. Does this make it the perfect premium family sedan?
A
few years ago, if you asked any diva driver in the Gulf where their ideal car would come from, and almost all would say Germany. However, these days, more and more would tell you that a Cadillac is the car they’d drive. This is because the American premium luxury brand has had one objective in mind over the last decade, and that is to fight their way up to sit amongst the German big three of BMW, Mercedes and Audi. The Cadillac CTS is the result of that ambition. In order to achieve their aims, Cadillac had to match the Germans on each of the following criteria: Style (both inside and out), quality, driving experience and technology. So, how does it fare? Well, on style it certainly does the trick! It is an extremely handsome car, with modern lines, an athletic stance, and the premium bling comes courtesy of those big chrome alloy wheels and the LED daytime running lights on the headlamps and framing the front air scoops. Inside, the good news continues. With padded leather surfaces and chrome detailing everywhere, it’s supremely stylish, and manages to be both modern and elegant. Comfort is key too, and the CTS doesn’t disappoint there either, with comfortable leather seats boasting both hot and cold ventilation. Everything looks and feels extremely solid and well-build, so the quality is definitely there too. On the technology side of things, they first had to overcome the historic notion that American cars can’t turn corners. They did this pretty emphatically when in 2009 the CTS-V sedan broke the lap time record on the Nurburgring for a production sedan on factory tyres. So, we know that Cadillacs can handle 86
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Diva Drives
well, but do they drive well? The answer is a resounding yes – the CTS has a lovely, smooth ride in addition to responsive handling, and even the turbocharged V6 version we drove had plenty of power, but was incredibly easy on the fuel, which is good news for the eco-conscious among you. Finally, Cadillac had to challenge the Germans on safety and driver assistance technology, and challenge they definitely have. It boasts adaptive cruise control as well as front and rear automatic braking to help you avoid collisions. Then there is the parallel and perpendicular parking assist, which basically parks the car for you. Not that we ladies need it, of course, but it’s nice to have… Then there is a raft of safety features including a protective safety cage made from high strength steel alloys to protect the family, no less than TEN airbags all around you, and electronic stability control, ABS with automatic brake-dry (this gently applies braking to wet brakes to heat them up so that they dry quicker), and even lane-change correction, which helps you steer back into your lane if it senses you drifting across the line by mistake. Overall, we found the Cadillac extremely impressive. Outside America, the Cadillac brand still doesn’t have the prestige of its German counterparts. However if it keeps making cars like this, it’s only a matter of time. And not that much time either… www.ohlala-magazine.com

Travel Escapes Arriving in Belgium
The Lowdown on Bruges
For the love of flea markets!
“I don’t know if the weather had
The first thing that came to mind when I decided to travel to Belgium is: “How much chocolate will I be able to bring from Belgium?” The second thing was: “Finally, I’ll be able to practice my French!” And last, but not least, the third thing that crossed my mind was: “I will finally have a breather from the heat.” After seven hours in a plane, which I thought was nothing compared to trips I usually take (transAtlantic), I arrive in beautiful Brussels. Taking a 30min train journey to the city, the weather was absolutely perfect for a stroll in the new city I was about to discover. The one thing that caught my eye – and this is for all art lovers – I was able to appreciate the artistic scenery with its beautiful shops, some décor-oriented with a vast selection of antique items. There is nothing more fulfilling and inviting, than travelling to a place where inspiration is all over the place, ready to be absorbed.
Have you ever watched, In Bruges with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson? Well that was my next stop in Belgium. Being the capital of West Flanders in northwestern Belgium, if you thought fairy tales didn’ exist, Bruges proves otherwise. Everything in Bruges is petite from its dolllike structures to its colourful doors; this fantastic city is a movie set. If you travel from Brussels to Bruges, I suggest you take a train ride where you’ll be able to appreciate the incredible green landscapes all in a one-hour journey. Once you disembark the train and head to the centre, you’ll discover the thrill of seeing some outrageously big horses and my all time favourite part, the canal. If you want to do a classic round of sightseeing Bruges, take one of the boats through its canal.
I, being a flea market lover, had an amazing time exploring Brussels’ flea market near Brussels-Midi train station. Antiquities, vinyl records, old books, coats and other goodies ready to be purchased were on sale. Thrilled knowing my university years were back, I kept searching for that perfect item to cherish and take back with me.
something to do with the fact that
Food Glorious Food
it certainly hit the spot. Oh my,
For foodie lovers, Belgium is very well known for its popular mussels. Quartier du Centre became my best friend when it came to shopping, purchasing souvenirs and exploring outstanding buildings. With cobble-stoned roads directing you to the center, every single restaurant consists of its local favourites and of course, mussels. For those who need a little break from shopping and being an overwhelmed tourist, I must say Belgium offers the best waffles in the world. I don’t know if the weather had something to do with the fact that I struck gold with a hot waffle packed with nutella, banana and some delicious strawberries, but it certainly hit the spot. Oh my, those 5 Euros went a long way.
Where to shop
Filled with fashion shops, beauty shops, and waffle houses, Rue Neuve is the street to be at when taking on the shopping experience. If makeup or beauty essentials are your thing, make a quick stop at Yves Rocher where you’ll be thrown into a world of aromas and scents. If meditation essentials is something you crave, visit Rituals where you’ll find natural products for the body and mind.
I struck gold with a hot waffle
packed with nutella, banana and some delicious strawberries, but
those 5 Euros went a long way” What’s good?
Chocolate. There isn’t a single shop in town where chocolate is nowhere to be found. Cheese is also part of the experience, but the standing ovation must be given to their French fries. There’s this place in the centre of town known as Markt - they have the best. These fries are so popular the queues say it all. I was also thrilled to have visited an art gallery; it had been years since I last visited a worthy one and Belgium had the surprise of taking me through a gallery experience, all over again. Located at a very touristic point – also worth visiting – Belfry of Bruges hosted exquisite works from many talented artists, which were on display yet Steve Small’s artistic approach, took it all. Belgium is undeniably a place where I was reminded how incredible Europe is and how much I had forgotten to appreciate and revive the love for art, walking, taking a train and other mundane activities we don’t have the luxury of participating in.

The Column
Talking to me? Continuing from last month’s topic, our columnist looks at more ways of positive self-chat.
I hope you have become more aware of what you say to yourself from reading last month’s column. Now its time to explore more positive ways of talking to ourselves. For example, try saying the sentence, “What else can I ENJOY right now?” to yourself, and notice how it changes what you pay attention to, and how you feel in response. That sentence directs your attention towards what you can enjoy in the present moment, rather than the complaints and problems that so often occupy our attention and make us feel bad. Even in the worst situation there is always something to enjoy, so this instruction never contradicts your reality, and it also doesn’t contradict any grumpy voice that is complaining about all the nasty stuff. It doesn’t oppose it by saying “but”; it just directs your attention to other aspects of your experience, saying “and”, joining what a critical voice might be attending to and noticing what you can enjoy. If you say the sentence repeatedly until it becomes an unconscious mantra, it can reorient your life in a way that 114 www.ohlala-magazine.com
is both useful and enjoyable. Contrast can often clarify and deepen your understanding of how voices work. Notice what happens if you replace the word ENJOY with CRITICISE or BE DISGUSTED BY, or some other negative word or phrase, just for a short time to notice what that is like. Many depressed people talk to themselves in this way without realising it. Attending to what you don’t like, results in unpleasant feelings; attending to what you can enjoy results in pleasant feelings. Of course you can replace ENJOY with any other verb that directs your attention to what you want more of in your experience – to love, appreciate, learn, see more clearly, and so on. Try saying to yourself: “ What else can I love right now?’’ Melanie Melanie is a Certified Counsellor, NLP Trainer, Hypnotherapist and Reiki Practitioner/Teacher.
