A GLITTERING NATURE Created in 2017, the Frivole mini model creations are this year adorned with diamonds, blending with yellow gold in a precious sparkle. Magnifying the graphic quality of the corollas, the diamonds are selected by the Maison’s experts according to the most stringent criteria (D to F, IF to VVS): their purity offers a dazzling accompaniment to the delicacy of the miniature motifs. The brilliance of the creations is also accentuated using openwork, whereby the jeweller pierces the gold structure to enable light to pass through the diamonds. Different jewellery techniques combine with extreme attention to detail to embellishthe Frivole creations.

THREE DELICATE FLOWERS This year, the Frivole collection takes on a new feminine aesthetic, with an association of three miniature motifs. With fashion month, over, what have you most enjoyed about the SS18 season shows? Why? SS18 has been undoubtedly the season of the return of logos in fashion. We haven’t seen logomania on such a scale since the early to mid-90’s and almost brandless labels like Celine and Maison Margiela took over. From Balenciaga printed on scarves to Saint Laurent’s YSL shaped heels and Chloe’s name on sweatshirts, brands are literally spelling their names out. These pieces have been extremely well received in Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain and with the hottest fashion bloggers due to the importance of logos in the region. If you had to incorporate one trend from SS18 trend into your wardrobe, what would it be? Why? Without a doubt, the 80’s. SS18 Trends: Logomania, pastel colors, 80s, Denim, trench coats, belt bags, vintage flowers, nautical… Which Fashion Week designer have you admired and why? Saint Laurent was the show of the season. Taking place in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the looks were as amazing as the venue. The magic of Anthony Vaccarello continues to impact Saint Laurent collections season after season. He has also brought freshness in accessories, which is good news for Saks shoppers. His signature on dresses is now iconic. How much does sustainability govern the designs in Saks Fifth Avenue? What would you say is the best way to achieve it in fashion? Sustainable fashion is no longer just a trend. It is becoming a must for our industry and our planet, and we expect to see more sustainable designs and brands in the coming seasons. Stella McCartney is one of the strongest examples of sustainability in

fashion for both women and men, and is also a coveted brand at Saks Bahrain. Tell us about a typical day in the life of a Saks Fifth Avenue General Manager. I rise early to spend time with my daughters before they go to school, catch up on emails and then spend time with my work teams discussing our plans for the business. Unfortunately my day is not as glamorous as our team on the shop floor who spend their entire day with our loyal customers and gorgeous product or our buyers who travel to Paris, Milan, and New York. I am very lucky to work with talented and hardworking people and in an industry with lovely brands and product. Outside of work, I try to spend time with family, work out (running or gym class), and not spend too much time on social media. THE REVIVAL TROUSSEAU is an ancient concept from around the world, a personal dowry of things a woman would bring to her marriage.We have our own keepsake situated on the first floor of Al Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ali Complex gracing us with one of Englandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest perfume houses, GROSSMITH.

ow did you become a perfumer, and did you always knew you would become one? It may sound odd but I am not a perfumer! I discovered my perfume heritage in about 2006 through research into my family history as no-one in my family had ever mentioned the business. Having made this discovery in my fifties time was too short for me to learn to become a perfumer. We had to use the existing business experience and skills that my wife Amanda and I already had to revive the business and call on experts where necessary such as the team of perfumers at fragrance house Robertet, who specialise in the highest quality natural materials. Please tell us more about GROSSMITH and your collaboration with TROUSSEAU. We have learnt it was an idea on the side with friends. We had met Nancy Al Zain, founder and owner of Trousseau, as a retail customer at Fortnum & Mason in London. She had discovered our fragrances there and loved them as well as our story and asked us if we would consider working with her as our retail partner in Bahrain. 30

At a personal level our friendship has developed too - Nancy has spent time with our family when she has been in London and she has looked after us so very kindly when we have been in Bahrain.”- Simon, Grossmith What’s the story behind GROSSMITH and how did this perfume house develop? Grossmith was founded in the City of London in 1835 by my great great grandfather John Grossmith. He farmed herbs such as peppermint and lavender and supplied perfume oils to other houses, as well as finding time to support the Reform movement and writing a book on the subject, ‘Government Upon First Principles’. His son John Lipscomb Grossmith who was trained as a perfumer in Grasse, in the south of France, created a range of fragrances evoking travel to exotic places, three of which, Hasu-no-Hana, Phul-Nana and Shem-el-Nessim, we have recreated in our Classic Collection. These fragrances established Grossmith as a titan in the world of perfume in the early 1900s with sales all over the world and warrants from a Queen of England, a King of Spain and the Royal Court of Greece. The second and third generation of family perfumers died in the 1920s and after 50 years without family members being actively involved in the business the company’s fortunes failed in the 1970s. The company was sold and became dormant in 1980. I discovered the dormant company in 2006 and with my family decided to buy the company back and revive it and, as they say, the rest is history! Every year there are so many new fragrances coming out, isn’t it difficult to let your fragrance to be noticed amidst this vast selection of fragrances? How do you promote your fragrance? We rely on our perfumes speaking for themselves – their exceptional quality and authenticity mean that we now have a loyal customer base. Brands in the niche and ‘haute parfumerie’ sectors tend not to advertise but

rely on word of mouth and social media as well as editorial. We post news of our activities and pieces about our fragrances on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and our ‘fans’ and customers, as well as bloggers and other influencers, support and spread this news. It looks like you have to be creative not only in the craft of perfume making but the things around it as well, like the promoting of your perfumes. Did you create the labels of the fragrances by yourself as well? And how about the filling of the bottles and samples, is that all being done by your own hands? We have a wealth of heritage designs to inspire all aspects of our modern design and presentation. The form of our modern bottles and packaging makes reference to Grossmith’s Baccarat crystal, originally commissioned in the early 1900s, as well as to its beautiful Victorian presentations. A horizontal section cut through our Baccarat flacons makes a square shape with chamfered corners – a shape which you will see in our labels, the lozenges on our caps and for our blotters. You will also note the oval shape of our Victorian bottles echoed in the shapes of our elegant, reeded, modern bottles. Our perfumes are bottled and packed by hand by a wonderful team in a studio in the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds. Your fragrance BETROTHAL is one of our favourite scents, can you tell us about the story behind it and was it difficult to create? This fragrance was inspired by Grossmith’s ‘The Betrothal’ created to celebrate the engagement and marriage in 1893 of Princess May to the Duke of York. They later became King George V and Queen Mary. We had been working on a modern version when the engagement of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton was announced so we worked hard to enable a launch of the fragrance on the afternoon of their wedding. The voluptuous floral bouquet featuring rare and consequently expensive rose de mai and jasmine from Grasse dries down to a wonderfully silky, sensuous base of vanilla and woods. What do you find the most frustrating about the craft of perfume making? Genuine creativity takes time and the market is constantly demanding newness. Back in 1897 my ancestor John Lipscomb Grossmith said of a new fragrance ‘A new perfume is a rarity, and the perfumer who produces it may be likened to the astronomer “when a new planet sweeps into his [view]”’. We still share his opinion today and resist pressure to produce new fragrances every few months. Each new fragrance we launch has to be very special indeed.

I was heartened by this as I am wary that new treatments and products may be too harsh if they are applied universally to all clients. This is not the case at Dessange where each facial treatment is bespoke. The 111SKIN products which were used to cleanse my skin have been developed in Harley Street, London. Following an initial cleansing treatment an exfoliating cleanser was applied and left to work it’s magic for three purifying minutes whilst their head massage stimulates blood flow and wellbeing. Prior to the massage a toning product was applied and the pulses were set to match my specific level of sensitivity. My therapist had described the sensation as a combination of tiny pinches and soothing pressure and this was exactly the experience I had. The machine tightens, firms and lifts the skin whilst generating a general sense of wellbeing and relaxation. Perfect for the Bride-to-be as she begins to wilt under pressure prior to her big day. The Bio Cellulose Mask which followed was designed to target maximum hydration using gel like fibres which allow the product to penetrate the skin more deeply. It felt incredible, especially after the pinching sensation of the massage machine. Alongside the sumptuous mask the therapist administered a relaxing arm massage . I could feel stress being drawn from my body with every stroke. The remaining serum is absorbed through gentle stimulation magnifying the benefits of the mask. Once again 111SKIN products were employed to great effect to compliment the qualities of the machine massage and Bio Cellulose Mask. The Bright Eye Lift Gel and Day Cream brought the facial to a close leaving me feeling invigorated , revitalised and my skin very visibly rejuvenated. The absence of steaming and extraction during the treatment reduces the chance of outbreaks or negative reactions which would be extremely unwelcome for any Bride to be. Starting from the beginning of the day we make sure that the wedding planner hands over the ballroom on the day of the event, if not the day beforehand, to allow us enough time for the set-up and to ensure every department is taken care of alongside every detail being meticulously reviewed. My role is to make sure that each event is memorable and in-line with their vision. Operations will brief staff regarding the sequence of service

and distribute accordingly to complement the catering aspect of the day. In this part of the world they love big weddings and we have a 600 seating capacity in our ballroom, but, we always ensure that our service, warmness and product itself is unparalleled compared to other venues. This is why many people decide to host their wedding here even if that means sacrificing the guest-list. To be honest, I have a brilliant team working beside me and we work amazing together, which makes coming to Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay a pleasure, it truly doesn’t feel like work and I’m thankful that it is a very healthy working environment. What has been your biggest challenge to date and how did you overcome any issues that arose? You do find yourself imagining that every couple is getting married for the first time which truly is the biggest challenge, as it is such a momentous occasion. I cannot help but see myself as a Father and although I do not have a daughter I feel like a Father to our Brides-to-be and I will do everything in my power to ensure that that they are taken care whilst in our care and that everything is nothing short of perfection, especially with my fingerprint being associated with said wedding - everything is very personalised and it is very gratifying being part of something so precious. We are looking forward to having more mixed weddings as we have many ladies-only bridal parties, but, we do cater to everyone’s preference. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. I like fishing. This is my passion. I go every other week with my oldest son to Reef Island. My biggest catch was over 1.5 kilos and it was amazing to cook this ultimately combining my two passions in life. I always bring in an interesting lunch that isn’t conventional and it always draws comments, but, I love unexpected fusion. I surprised myself recently when I quickly boiled sweet potatoes and sprinkled with coconut and organic honey - it was truly delicious and the team wholeheartedly agreed.

hat’s your favourite style from your latest collection? I love Sylvia as it is so unique and uncommon, but also Eva, which has become so popular because of ts fitting. We have experimented new cuts which have been very successful. How do you decide on the names of your collections? Every gown is dedicated to a woman. I choose only female names. The sound of the name or the face of a woman I’ve met in my career that inspires me allows me to choose that name and give it to a particular gown. How many Peter Langner brides are there every year? I meet many in my atelier in Milan, usually not during the first appointment as I do not want to influence the choice of the gown, however, I do like to be present during the fitting as I want to be sure the gown is perfectly made and fits perfectly. I love details. All my gowns are intricately detailed, and perfectly finished. The seams and hems of couture gowns are hand-finished, smooth, invisible and comfortable against the skin. Can you give a little overview of how you came to be a bridal designer? I graduated at L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de Paris, worked for Christian Dior, Emmanuel Ungaro, and Christian Lacroix. When I moved to Rome I felt it was the right time for me to start creating my own collections. It was due to my love of all things which are of the best quality. Fine fabrics, fine art, fine food, fine sculptures and so on. It is a natural outgrowth of who I am. Everything in my life is about fine quality and beauty so it was simply natural. 64

When you start to design a new collection, what is the process? Do you start with an overview of what you want to collection to be or a mood board with the elements you want to include? My team and I come up with the concept, and the next step is experimenting with materials in our workroom in Milan. Once the performance of the materials have been verified, what follows is the design and execution of the garments, in a continuous dialogue between all parties involved. This teamwork is essential and includes various intermediate stages: illustrating the idea on paper, iconographic research, making swatches of embroidery and other materials, having the fabric produced in our artisanal workroom and finally constructing the garment on the form, into an ideal synthesis of Peter Langner‘s femininity. It’s intense work on a daily basis, lasting for three or four months, until I give its approval. What part of the design process do you enjoy most? I love sourcing for new fabrics! We used over 170 different fabrics in the last collection. We do a lot of research and have different people creating our fabrics so that they are exclusive to us. What are your design influences right now? There is no specific inspiration to get started. I usually try to have a clear head, a focused mind, free from distractions

when I begin with a new collection.I’m a lover of great architecture and it translates into my bridal creations. Where do you look to spot ‘trends’ and keep abreast with what brides are looking for? I follow my inspiration and I work hard with my team on new techniques. We continuously reinvent materials. This is a very big part of the work: research and experimenting but always with an eye to the woman we want to dress and to her needs, which change from country to country and generation to generation. That’s why I try to travel as much as I can and meet my brides. I need a dialogue with them to understand what they want. What are your favourite materials/embellishments to work with? Most of our fabrics are Italian, even though I always look for something different and new. So, my eyes are always open for new fresh ideas. A fabric is very important to give the gown the right shape and body. You choose the wrong fabric and the most amazing idea is lost. Every 66

collection is different: last year we used porcelain petals, fringed raffia, small chiffon square fabrics folded in little cubes and then sewn on tulle fabrics. We invent new solutions every season. What, in your opinion, sets your brand apart? What are your core values? Our gowns are couture gowns. They are really done one by one and the hand work really shows in the final result. Our trims are silk satin or silk organza and not just an applied ribbon. The laces are all placed by hand and are ensured that they fall the right way. The gowns are cut and made in a way that they follow the movement of the woman. Very often brides tell me “I don’t want a gown which stands whilst I move”. Tell us what do you do to relax? How do you escape from the wedding world? My pets first of all: my dog Aladino and my cat Luna and then cooking – the art of being relaxed whilst enjoying genuine food directly from my countryside’s garden. What are the most important things brides should keep in mind whilst choosing their gown? Listen carefully but choose with your heart. Less is more. Simplicity is the essence of elegance. If you weren’t designing wedding dresses, what do you think you would be doing? I would be making jam and marmalade in my countryside’s house. What should we expect next from your label? We are now working on the 2019 Collection which will be showcased next month in Milan, New York and Barcelona. I’m so proud of it! It is the full expression of my creativity combined with the expertise of my seamstresses and unusual experiments and combinations of new materials and techniques. I will surprise you! After 30 minutes I showered and wrapped in a fluffy robe was settled in my treatment room where I embarked upon my heavenly ritual with my therapist Thiangi. EVENING FLAIR We started our weekend on a high-note indulging ourselves in gastronomical heaven at the Thursday Night Out Brunch at Silks Restaurant, located within The Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, and we recommend you follow suit. The Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain stands resplendent overlooking the vast

Arad Bay Lagoon. Those who carefully designed the menus and themed evenings must have been driven by the ethos that ‘All good things are the fruits of originality’ as they were the first to usurp the trend of the Friday Brunch with ‘Thursday Night Out’ as their flagship event. Silk’s Restaurant plays host to this culinary extravaganza. The restaurant is a perfect blend of contemporary shapes and shades which also pay homage to the retro, Art Deco chic of the Manhattan behemoths in their hay-day. The circular backed, high armed chairs and crisp white table cloths are inviting and encourage you to linger and enjoy the live music. The brand name was inspired by the feeding action of gulls (Mowe in German) and the efficiency and simplicity of it’s movements in completing the task swiftly. The founder hoped that the service in ‘Mövenpick’ would mirror this efficiency, simplicity and swiftness, needless to say, our experience confirmed this wholeheartedly. Walking in to Silk’s after a fractious, frantic end to the working week was just what we all had hoped it would be. A vast array of stations, brimming with produce and a riot of aromas enticing us to explore different regions around the globe. We stood, motionless for just a moment before embarking upon our gastronomic repast. The stations are designed to mimic the courses one would expect at ‘dinner’ as opposed to the slightly more informal style of the Friday Brunch. The appetisers ranged from vast ceramic platters of vibrant, crisp salads (which also doubled as side dishes) to steaming bamboo baskets loaded with Asian Bonne Bouche. Ideal for the health conscious and those incapable of making up their minds. All were regularly replenished with produce freshly prepared by the skilled team of chefs assigned to each station. When striving for originality Silk’s employs the very best of every style of cuisine. The Asian station chefs sent out planks containing sumptuous Thai curries , creamy and decadent and the very best southern Indian staples each with thoughtfully presented www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHIC Eats sundries. Many of the dishes were freshly prepared and levels of heat and spice flattered every palate. For many this would suffice but the mermaid like calls of the seafood station lured me on to the steel platters brimming with fresh shrimp and king crab legs which nestled amidst a mountain of crushed ice. Beautiful cuts of fresh salmon could also be prepared to your own exacting standards and delivered to your table. Quality and Quantity combined. I stopped to admire the grilled meats presented , as ‘kebabs’ should be , on sword like skewers. ‘Kebab’ literally means cooked over fire and it is believed that soldiers would use their swords to skewer and suspend the meat over the flames. Hence, the relevance of the clever presentation of the perfectly charred offerings of meat and vegetables , suspended for ease of service. I finally made it to The Butcher’s Shop Corner which , given the title, needs little explanation. Tender U.S. prime cuts grilled and roasted and expertly carved. Succulent, juicy, flavoursome, delectable … I could go on and on but won’t. I am sure your mouth is already watering , as mine was. Any one of an abundance of side dishes would compliment each dish and diner’s preference. Such ‘Ambrosia’ should always be accompanied by equally special ‘Nectar’

The offerings were daring, fruity, fizzy and full of zest and zing. Classic favourites and evening staples were also available in generous amounts throughout. I often dine with a good friend who is vegetarian and who mocks my self-proclaimed status as a dessertarian - one who could survive on dessert alone. This would be a totally achievable task here. Delicate pastries, mousse and roulades ranging from vividly fruity to decadently chocolatey were portioned to allow the assembly of personalised assiettes. In addition hand crafted cakes pierced with shards of chocolate and decorated with sugar art invited you to indulge as much or as little as you felt able to. All manner of fromage, queso, kaas and formaggio formed one of the finest European Cheese tables I have seen , offering a savoury addition or alternative to end of the meal. If you strive to be average then mimic others but in order to be outstanding and novel you must do what no one else does and be original. This is the vision which inspired The Mövenpick who were the first, the original and arguably are the most outstanding Thursday night dining event in Bahrain. Producing luxury vehicles since 1914, these master sports car designers have had over a century to perfect their trade and perfection they certainly have achieved. Being the lucky professionals we are at Ohlala, we were given the opportunity to take the new Maserati Quattroporte for a spin and to experience the high level of craftsmanship achieved by these supreme vehicle architects. The Quattroporte model itself has a 55 year history. Since 1965 its elegant appearance and high-quality performance has been refined to near flawlessness, something that was obvious from the first moment we laid eyes on her beautiful curves. The first feature to stand out was the Alfieri-shaped three-dimensional grille. Pointier and more imposing than previous models, it also boasts new vertical chrome rib elements that contrast with the depth of the ‘sharknose‘ effect. The restyled bumper design features a matt black front profile, rear extractor and side skirts. Adaptive full LED headlights are fitted as standard and feature Static Bending Lights and automatic height regulation. The headlights also include a front camera that automatically lower the beams to reduce the light shining on vehicles travelling towards you. Six aluminium rims in five different designs ranging from 19-21 inches are available in the MY18 Quattroporte range. The Quattroporte also continuously monitors its own tyre pressures using a sensor mounted inside the rim as part of the valve. Instant pressures can be read off the dashboard display. As we continued our exterior inspection, the entire vehicle flowed from front to rear and back again. Every feature from the exhausts to the front Trident emblem was perfectly placed for performance and visual beauty. Shifting our attention to the interior of the vehicle, we were greeted with no less than a dazzling layout. No expense has been spared when selecting the quality materials and intricate design of this business lounge like environment. The dashboard features a full-width surface in a variety of exclusive, precious woods, underlining the refined character of the Quattroporte and rounded out by decorative inserts on the front and rear door panels. Coloured stitching contrasts with the leather colour on the upper dashboard, doors, seats, headrests, and in many other optional areas. Due to the long wheelbase this

Quattroporte is extremely roomy in both the front and rear whilst the first-class surroundings ensure all occupants feel instantly comfortable. A 530 litre luggage compartment completes the spacious layout, making this car not only luxurious but practical for everyday use. The user-friendly infotainment system is based on a high-resolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen, compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions. The central, lower console features a rotary knob, a high-quality component made of forged aluminium that offers intuitive control of audio volume as well as the infotainment system’s other functions. All-inall, the interior and its feature could not have been better placed or designed and we could not wait to see how all of this translated to on-road performance. As we pulled out of the parking are and onto the tarmac, we knew we were in for a real treat. The thundering sound of the Petrol 600 V6, twin-turbo - direct injection GDI engine reverberated through our bodies and filled us with genuine excitement. As weight was applied to the accelerator, the 2979 cc’s of displacement and 4500 nM of torque were immediately at our disposal. Able to shoot from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds, this car was not playing around. Boasting a top speed of 270km/h, we had to settle for a lot less than her full capabilities on public roads. Complete with a ZF eight-speed automatic AT8 - HP70 gearbox, this car effortlessly shifted through the gears, allowing for a smooth and easy ride. Along with great handling and plenty of surface grip, we always felt in complete control of the experience. Monitoring our immediate environment, we noticed how the car’s presence turned heads at every corner and it was obvious to us and everyone else that we had the finest ride on the island. I’M NOT A BRIDEZILLA Never a one to follow the norm, Miss Ohlala bucks the stereotypical trend of a woman who is planning her own wedding in an erratic fashion. Last Winter some lovely self-preserving impulse came over my blushing partner, and one golden afternoon in Scotland he got down on one knee and proposed to the woman he loves...me. Yeah, that could have been awkward. He says I’m matter-of-fact, funny and strong - the kind of person you can trust to rescue you from your usual daily spiral of pettiness and self-loathing. Like I said: self-preservation. I can remember every detail of the proposal - what he said, or attempted to say; what the light looked like all around and the celebration of food and drink that we enjoyed together in a daze afterwards. The question arose as to whether he had asked my Father’s ‘permission’ to be able to offer me his hand in marriage. He did. My Father accepting such a renouncing of ownership rather frivolously if you ask me. Now, I don’t know about you but this gesture of goodwill sounds rather archaic, but, alas, I’m still waiting for such a loving display of self-mutilation and/or affection - will a high-five do? One of my friends has previously called me up to have an actual melt down because her so-called-friend got engaged as well and was planning to get married in the same year as she was. Apparently it was her special year and not just a day. She threw a huge fit that this girl was only getting married to “steal her thunder”. May I add that there weddings weren’t even being held in the same season never mind the same month. Brides sometimes don’t think rationally and I for one don’t need the excuse of a wedding to be referenced as such. 98

Don’t even get me started on the altercations of asking friends to be bridesmaids. It opens up a whole can of worms to those friends who haven’t been selected, with a barrage of questions as to why and a level of self-questioning as to why they didn’t make the final cut. Once when I was a bridesmaid I was told to go to the hairdressers to ‘dye my hair’ and the bride would cover the cost. Of course I questioned said outlandish command, the brides response? My hair was quite ‘attention-grabbing’ and wouldn’t fit with the cohesiveness of the group. Okay then. Moving back to the hubby-to-be, I started calling him the bride and this began as a joke between us. My joke. I’ve since realised that I’ve been trying to tell him something that he had yet to hear, which is that I have no intention on performing whatever role the woman is usually forced to perform in this situation. He gets it. It’s something he likes about me (a possible first) and the way I go through life - skepticism, independence in abundance and my ongoing distrust of authority. I think he’s marrying me precisely because I’m not the type of girl who’s super into weddings. I do love cake though...
