LETTER

Calling all brides-to-be! We’re all for the classic creations that reference the bridal gowns of the past, but there’s just something so invigorating about the modern garments of the future. And while we’ve always admired the collective work of our (and your!) favourite designers, we’ll admit that it’s a particularly good time to be a bride. The reason? These new styles offer a brand-new perspective on big-day fashion, and are elements that a couture-loving woman of the moment is sure to love. If these trends are any indication, it’s clear that, when it comes to choosing a wedding dress, brides are having more fun than ever before. That’s not to say, though, that classic brides can’t get in on the fun. Romantic off-the-shoulder sleeves, high, Victorian-inspired necklines and collars, and embroidery are just a few of the more refined twists on the traditional wedding dress. As a bride-to-be myself, this issue has added additional inspiration to my forever changing bridal mood board. I promise I haven’t turned into a bridezilla, but, there’s time yet!

Nicholas Kirkwood is firmly on a path to become his generation’s globally acknowledged leading shoe designer. Here, Kirkwood recalls his algorithms of success. 24

irkwood decided to launch his own, eponymous brand in 2005, whereby his designs were defined by daring innovation in the use of unconventional materials and techniques that married high craft and tradition with the cutting edge of technology and the unexpected. Let’s delve straight in...Why shoes? What was the main reason that made you choose this particular segment of fashion? I studied at Central Saint Martin (CSM) which was my introduction to the world of fashion and design as many of my friends were fashion students. I was studying Fine Art and I loved the sculptural elements of the course. Later I secured a position as an intern with a hat designer which confirmed my love of accessories, as much of my time was spent helping clients find the perfect hat to match their shoe and handbag choices. The direction of my primary interest shifted during this period from hat design to an avid interest in shoes; fascinated by how they complete any given look. From that point my interest in shoe design authentically blossomed.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career in the fashion industry what would it be? I would definitely tell myself to make sure that I make the most of the opportunities presented to me as a result of being in this industry, particularly travelling and visiting fabulous destinations. I’d also say that you should be prepared for the bursts of intensity and being able to function under pressure. If possible find a partner that you can work with because constructive dialogue and that ornate ability to bounce ideas off one another is vital to the creative process. Was your decision of leaving Cordwainers in 2001 after one year a decision that you would make today? If so, why? I was forced to drop out of college because my finances didn’t allow me to carry on and I needed to find a source of income. Renting with a fellow student who was still carrying on with the course meant that it was possible for me to carry on learning through them. We made shoes together in our apartment whilst I was still able to support myself. That’s not to say that I was certain that this approach would work, but, my commitment to carry on regardless of whether or not I could fund my education confirms that this was very much a vocation for me, as opposed to a career choice. www.ohlala-magazine.com

How was the feeling of winning the Condé Nast Footwear News Vivan Infantino award in 2006 for emerging talent after you’d just produced your first eponymous collection for Spring/Summer 2005? It was the first formal recognition of my talent. The opinions, compliments and recommendations that I receive from clients who are actually buying my designs are incredibly important to me, but, having that formal recognition by such an esteemed award ceremony made me think that I had a future in the industry. It boosted my confidence and spurred me on to better myself year after year. How would you describe your co-designing and co-branding experience from your previous collaborations? Do you feel that collaborations of this nature benefit the industry? Collaborations are something that I have always done from the time of my first collection. I’ve worked with a variety of designers on their runway shows and for me it’s part of my design DNA. The best results come from the defining characteristics of each designer being very evident and one not being overpowered by the other. The levels of communication between both designers need to be open and honest and constructive. I would also like to think that this might see me collaborating in different fields such as jewellery or furniture. What made you want to expand your business scope from designing shoes to incorporating it with jewellery and what was the inspiration behind designing the jewellery for your London FW18 show? Jewellery is something that has always interested me and it was a very close call between shoes and jewellery. I love the intricacies involved in designing pieces of jewellery just as I do when drawing the heel of a shoe. My first design was based around the theme of the September show with hacking and electronics which is why I wanted the jewellery designs to be based around wires and the aesthetic of a memory stick. This hasn’t been released as a full line yet, but, I would love to see this in the future as well as designing the jewellery for my shows. How is working in fashion different today than from when you started out? I think the most striking difference is that social media is pivotal and you’re able to talk

directly to the customer and they have direct access to the brand. The design process was more closeted and most decisions were made behind-the-scenes. However today everything is played out on the social media platforms and the customer can see the process of design as it happens. What role do you think social media and e-commerce play in fashion today? And did that role impact your London FW18 digital presentation? I chose to do a runway show but I didn’t want it to be projected in the classic way. The way in which people see designs in today’s market is based upon the likes of Instagram and therefore presenting my line in the form of a classic runway show just didn’t make sense as it doesn’t lend itself well to the types of images that social media requires. It needed to be a heightened performance in order for images to be posted on Instagram instantaneously. Changing the format of shows is certainly the way I think the industry will go. We need to create theatrical performances that can be transposed onto social media effectively. Tell us about the inspiration behind your SS19 collection and what we should expect in regards to your innovation alongside the designs and materials. The SS19 collection was inspired by the subculture of hacking. An


underground area of society that fashion hasn’t really acknowledged yet. I chose to focus on sportswear that the hackers might choose to wear or the artwork displayed on their walls and combining this with intricate details such as wires and USB sticks which are part of their work and equipment. I wanted the pieces in the collection to still look like a shoe but to incorporate these features and elements into the designs. What is your near future plan? And where do you see the Nicholas Kirkwood brand reaching? The near future will see me focusing on the brands and ensuring that people are familiar with it across the globe. This might mean creating pop up stores and thinking in a more dynamic way to get our message out there. Design wise I am hoping to create a pop up jewellery collections which will also filter into bag design all of which would complement one another and elementally be very similar. eon, Brights and Colour Block trends have conquered the runway on March 20th as Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain presented their Spring Summer 2019 collection at the Middle East flagship store in City Centre Bahrain. With over 300 guests, the area was completely transformed from one of the most prestigious, luxury department stores into a fashion catwalk, setting the tone for this season’s newest trends. Fashion lovers, VIPs, trend seekers, and style influencers sat front row to catch the latest looks from some of the world’s most sought-after brands. While 80’s, Endless Summer, Neutrals and Disco Glam dominated the runway it also showcased everything from Transparency to colours of the season like White and Silver. Fashion lovers feasted their eyes on other trends such as Boho Prints, Tie Dye, Fringe and Sequins, featuring an exciting range of styles to admire. “The Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain Fashion Show has become a yearly rendez-vous for fashion lovers to gather and celebrate the season’s hottest brands and latest trends and styles. The show presented over 20 international designers such as Balenciaga, Chloe, Saint Laurent Paris, Lanvin, Givenchy, Ingie Paris, Stella McCartney and Manish Arora to name a few. Lancôme, Yves Saint Laurent and Giorgio Armani makeup artists worked their magic on the models leaving them fresh faced, with dewy skin, sun kissed cheeks and soft pink lips. Showcasing a strong menswear collection, the show displayed a variety of eye-catching looks featuring designers such as Givenchy, Christian Dior, Philipp Plein, Kenzo, and Palm Angels. All models wore Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Saint Laurent Paris, Malone Souliers amongst others to walk down the runway. The event included many activations and surprises that brought more joy to the event in collaboration with our partners De Grisogono, part of Asia Jewellers, and Ferrari. The iconic “Saks” logo gave way to the creative design for the backdrop set-up, with neon lights and beating music, making this show one of the most sought-after fashion events of the season. The affair did not stop there, with an after-party hosted at the Westin Hotel for an unforgettable night celebrating fashion. Smart Beauty Dr. SungJae Jung, a soft spoken and driven young doctor, has always had a passion for innovation and a genuine care for the well-being of his patients. In 2001, he was running his own clinic in Seoul, Korea after earning his M.D and becoming a certified dermatologist. He spent each day creating and testing for the safest and most effective skin care formulas for severe skin issues.Chin Wook Lee, a close family friend of Dr. Jung and young entrepreneur, was impressed by Dr. Jung’s spirit and expertise, and ventured to bring Dr. Jung’s formulas out of the clinic, into the mainstream. On a quest to find a product “that would amaze consumers worldwide” the trained architect decided the beauty space was the place to be. As he was looking for products that hadn’t been seen before, he came across blemish balm in a South Korean skin-care clinic. It was 2004, and the concept of a skincare-makeup hybrid was new, developed for South Korean women looking to shorten their beauty routine as they entered the workforce. And that was the first step of Dr.Jart. What is the vision of the brand? Dr.Jart is a dermatological cosmetic brand rooted in science and drawing inspiration from art to create a healthy beauty. Dr.Jart pursues “healthy beauty” as its utmost goal, through its rational and emotional approach to prescription.

Hello Ciler! You have a strong allegiance of high profile clients, including the UK national treasures that are Holly Willoughby and Christine Lampard. How did you develop your own styling finesse in this ‘cut-throat’ industry? As with everyone within this industry I was taught the basics of hairdressing. Starting off you are shown the correct way to hold the comb and scissors, whilst also being able to section hair accordingly alongside the know-how of blow-drying different textured hair… I knew from an early age I wanted to evolve my own technique. I’m a perfectionist in regards to the style that I am creating so I felt that there was more to just these basics that would create a bespoke style for my clientele. I dedicated many years of practice to improve my hair cutting technique and execute it with full confidence; I’m a true believer in practice makes...better! I continuously strive to improve myself and to also be up-to-date with the latest trends, which certainly keeps me in good stead for my clients who are in the public eye! When did you realise that hair was your passion and how did it develop into your career? From a young age, I used to visit salons with my mother, sit in the chair next to her whilst she would have her hair styled etc and I can remember intensely watching. As my mother’s hair was transformed from curls to smooth straight hair I was mesmerised and in awe of the magician with the tongs. This quickly developed into me wanting to “play” with my own hair, and also my cousins and friends hair. At the age of 16 I became an apprentice, and this was the start of my journey.Three years passed and I became a junior stylist. The more years and experience that I gained within the industry made me fall more in love with it. Gloss Salon & Spa is the only place you work from in the Middle East. Why is that? movement and volume to my limp lacklustre barnet. How often should us girls trim or cut our hair? When having short hair, it is a higher maintenance regime, therefore, I recommend trimming the hair every 6 weeks. This will allow the original style and condition to be maintained if regularly colouring and blow-drying. When having longer hair, the style tends to last a little longer, meaning every 8 – 10 weeks it would need to be trimmed, depending upon the condition of the hair. What’s the easiest way for Ohlala readers to take their hair from a day in the office to happy hour and still look great? Taking into consideration the humidity we face in the Kingdom of Bahrain… With taking the humidity in Bahrain into consideration, I would recommend that an anti-frizz product, such as oils, serums and creams as this will leave your hair looking healthy and shiny. An option would be to have your hair up in a loose bun, which you could take down later on in the day to transform it into a bouncy wave for the perfect morning-to-evening look, whilst maintaining its health. Which hair product should every lady covet? Everyone needs a hydrating cream to feed the hair with goodness, but, also they need dry shampoo to give extra volume and texture when needed. What is your #1 hair care tip? Using oils through the roots, lengths and ends of our hair as it needs hydration just as much as our body does. Lunch and dinner both include a starter, a choice between two main courses (usually one with fish and the other with whole-grain pasta) and a dessert. 2. Biolight Menu This is an intermediate version of the SHA healthy nutrition diet, designed for those who wish to use their time in SHA to take a bit more care of themselves than usual and learn about healthy eating and the benefits it brings, without setting themselves detox or weight control goals that are too strict. It is the gastronomic menu they normally recommend for their guests who come with other health programmes such as for anti-stress, anti-tobacco or rejuvenation. Lunch includes a starter, a main course and a dessert (if desired), whereas dinner only includes the first and second courses. This menu is part of a healthier diet and its ingredients usually include fish three times a week and pasta twice a week, while allowing for a sparing use of oil and nuts. 3. Kushi Menu This is their strictest and most restrictive gastronomic diet, but this does not mean it is less healthy. It is recommended for those who aim to control their weight or intensively detoxify their body, being

a perfect complement to their weight loss program. It has smaller portions and also does not include certain healthy ingredients like oil, baked flour, nuts, pasta or oats. A little salt is also added. Fish is only included once a week and the diet is characteristic for including a lot of algae and hearty soups like miso that help cleanse the body and provide energy and vitality. “A deluxe room in a suite with a superb environment”. The Deluxe Suite (70m2) is equipped with the latest technology and the best services. A 70 m2 room carefully designed so that their guests enjoy a pleasant and ideal stay. Their Deluxe Suite has numerous services available that adapt to the requirements of each and every person. Every night I enjoyed a ‘turn-down’ service that witnessed my room transformed to my specific needs, including the TV location, mattress and pillow - not to forget the amazing in-house fragrances of lavender and lemongrass. I had some of the best sleep in a long while, which I attributed to the excellent spring mattress, 700 thread count sheets, black-out curtains, and excellent noise insulation. Large single-pane glass windows in the room are designed to utilise natural light and immerse you into nature’s proximity. Every day I had an incredible sea and mountain view villa assisting me in developing a deeper sense of appreciation for nature. I was impressed with the quality of room servicing; every time I went back to my room after a day of fitness and spa, my belongings were always reordered in thoughtful places, with my personal preferences considered. WELLNESS & CLINIC The Wellness & Clinic area is expansive and spacious, with a décor that evokes calm across its 6000m2. With a comprehensive selection of spa therapies ranging from traditional ayurvedic treatments and oriental acupressure, to holistic anti-ageing facials and aromatherapy. Treatments here are an exceptional experience and the therapists and rooms are some of the best around. My personal favourite was their HydroEnergetic Detox Cure which is a treatment recommended for those who want to lose weight, eliminate accumulated toxins, improve blood circulation, reduce stress and recover their body balance, all of which I was in desperate need of! It consisted of a bespoke oil bath, followed by a seaweed wrap which

you enjoy as you become more relaxed as you are literally floating on water before you are ‘blasted’ with water to increase circulation. I enjoyed many aspects of Sha’s focus on wellness, from the body composition analysis at the beginning and end of stay which is such a fundamental part of a modern wellness programme, to pranayama breathing sessions being transported into a zen-inducing meditative state. All the therapists and teachers are informed of your personal goals or interests and tailor their sessions accordingly. You’ll find they really want to see you transform your life into a healthy one as they guide you into and through your own personal journey of wellness in luxurious surroundings with a five-star service.

ONE WITH NATURE Grounded in good food is the amazingly innovative Riffa eatery that is OAK RESTAURANT. We talk all things organic with their EXECUTIVE CHEF CHANTEL and discover the story behind their illustrious furnishings.

As Oak’s Executive Chef we would like to get to know you more, Chantel. Tell us briefly about your ‘roots’ and culinary background. I’m from South Africa and have lived and worked in the US, France and various places across the Middle East before coming to Bahrain. I have over a decade of experience in the culinary world and love to bring with me the global influences from my international travels. My culinary repertoire really grew during my earlier years at the Ritz Carlton in Florida, where I worked under an acclaimed former White House chef. Here I developed and refined my culinary techniques. How were you first inspired to delve into the world of cooking? I spent much of my childhood at my grandparent’s farm in South Africa. We got involved with everything from making the butter, planting, harvesting and racing around on tractors. I think seeing and being part of the farm culture, learning about where our foods come from and having that appreciation from a young age was a great groundwork for the work I do now. I didn’t show much interest in the cooking part until I was a teenager, and this is when I really started getting involved in the kitchen at home and experimenting with different recipes, of course using some of the produce from my grandparent’s farm! Oak Restaurant is proud to showcase that it’s rooted in good food. Tell us about this concept and why we should visit you in Riffa. At Oak we believe that good food comes from great produce. We want our diners to be regulars and offer an all-day dining concept, essential a ‘homeaway-from-home’, where you can drop by any time of day and get a tasty meal, friendly service and a beautiful space to enjoy it all in. We spend our time working with suppliers both locally and abroad, to ensure we get the best that is available. We also work with our own farm here in Bahrain, to grow vegetables and herbs where possible. Since Bahrain is renowned for its plethora of spices and ingredients, what 84

specialties should foodies expect to see on your menu? I was really excited to discover the cherry tomatoes here in Bahrain, especially the ones we grow on our farm. The flavours are juicy, intense and perfect for many of our dishes. I use them in as many ways as possible, from oven roasting, semi-drying to preparing homemade tomato sauces. Your cooking philosophy in one sentence. I think it’s important to respect your roots and where you are; use as many fresh ingredients as possible; and always be exploring for new ingredients, flavours and dishes.


OHLALA Spotlight • Duncan is inspired by the natural beauty of the Tasmanian wilderness, using materials that embrace their natural characteristics. • As a blind craftsman, the relationship between light and shadow and light dispersion are integral to Duncan’s design process. • Each Duncan Meerding Design combines traditional hand made techniques and modern manufacturing techniques through small scale production and is built to last. • Importantly for Duncan’s work is sustainability and care for the environment throughout all his designs, with the majority of the timber sourced from ‘waste’ materials or faster growing robust timber varieties.

GETTING TO KNOW OAK The Design Oak’s concept was developed by Kingdom Gourmet. Jean Marie Lascelles Lloyd, Oak’s designer, has created a playful experience around the restaurant name. Furniture pieces such as the swing dining table, hanging chairs and axe legged tables, gently reinforce the Oak theme with a warm and whimsical touch. This is all sensitively created to ensure that the décor stays neutral enough for diners to be able to use the space as they want, rather than have it solely be a showcase for designer pieces.

Woodsman Axe Coffee Table by Duffy London • A minimalist axe table, inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy table ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ • This table combines art and function, with four polished hickory axes acting as the table legs. • This award-winning table design was the winner of the Peta Levi Memorial Bursary 2010, designed as part of the Grimm Design Collective • The timber used for this table is from the Forest Stewardship Council, which manages forests and other controlled sources. • Duffy London play with the concepts of gravity, geometry and illusion in their product designs. Crossfade table by Mogg • Created by Damien Jernay for Mogg Design • The inspiration for this table came from the world of film editing, a fade is a gradual transition from one image to another. In the production process, raw material is turned into a finished object. • The immediate characteristic of the table is its ‘live edge’ legs, giving it a feel of an unfinished product. The irregularities of the bark are considered a merit, making each table unique. • Overall it gives a beautiful soft effect, perfect for creating a warm and natural environment. SHARING IS CARING THE MERCHANT HOUSE is perfectly situated in downtown Manama nestled on the edge of the vibrant Bab-el-Bahrain Souq and a stone’s throw from the Financial District, making this a must visit both for business and pleasure.

D

owntown Manama is renowned for its hustle and bustle and parking can be an issue so I was thankful for the use of The merchant House’s handy Valet Service. I was intrigued to witness the concept behind this boutique style hotel with 46 suites, a spa and gym and rooftop pool as it is both exciting and pioneering. The lavishly decorated public areas and bold vibrancy exuded by every piece of commissioned artwork makes this an absolute show stopper. As I entered I was wowed and made my way to Indigo with eager anticipation. If the Lobby was this impressive I couldn’t wait to see what the in-house eatery had in store for me. The penthouse in any city centre hotel is considered the prime location, the pinnacle, and Indigo boasts the restaurant equivalent of said penthouse suite… and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It has a rooftop terrace area which genuinely took my breath away. This wasn’t because it had views to die for or vistas taking in the gulf, but because the styling and abundance of both greenery and vibrancy made me feel like I had arrived at the most fantastic garden soiree. Vast sofas swathed in bold floral fabric surrounded by shrubbery blooming with the same shades of pink as those on the soft furnishes, with bamboo and wicker pieces adding to the colonial theme. Huge glazed doors open up to

make the transition from inside-to-outside completely seamless. The same signature colours evident in the decadent bar area and throughout the internal dining spaces. The location, close to the souq, the colonial themed styling and the overriding notion of merchants and trade is very much reflected in the menu and the fusion of global tastes and ingredients are perfectly executed. Their esteemed Executive Chef Robert Shipman has designed a menu that draws from his experience throughout southern Europe and also his time working with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. The appetisers alone illustrated this with Japanese Wafu Salad, Peruvuian Ceviche, Italian Carpaccio and of course Calamari ensuring the Mediterranean flavours were wholeheartedly represented. Each dish was presented with the same vivacity as the décor. Delicate slivers of colour and splinters of contrasting textures presented in a sculptural way. The Carpaccio was speckled with pine nuts and shaved parmesan providing a piquancy which perfectly complemented the beef. The Tuna Tartar was presented with shards of sesame toasts as if more art than cuisine. The flavours, seasonings and drizzles were delicate and genuinely delicious. Risotto Funghi, Locally Sourced Hammour with a sensational sesame crust and their classic Steak Frites once again showcased the truly global variety on offer here at Indigo. The presentation of the Hammour mimicked the surroundings with the fish garnished with greenery and a vividly enticing orange chermoula and tomato salsa. Each mouthful tantalised the palate and made me eager for the next instalment. The steak was presented very simply allowing the quality, prime Australian Wagyu to shine through. The sautéed kale and baby spinach provided the perfect accompaniment. The risotto was as authentic as any produced by the finest Italian chefs, the hint of truffle oil adding luxuriance to the dish. The injection of Kaffir Lime and coconut milk into an Italian staple such as panna cotta reminds diners of their location and the many cultural influences within Manama due to its close proximity to the gateway to Southern Asia. Comforting, decadent chocolate fondant with a gloriously gooey centre provided me with the perfect conclusion. Indigo is best described as a boutique style dining experience crowning the most exciting, voguish residence to open in Manama. It provides the perfect backdrop for business negotiations, catch-ups amongst close friends or intimate family gatherings. THAT’S AMORE CAFÉ ITALIA is situated in the heart of Adliya on the now synonymous Block 338, where the elite flock to eat. Being surrounded by such an abundance of quality gastronomic and entertainment venues has no doubt inspired the Chefs at Café Italia to raise their game, as we discovered.

T

he restaurant is without a doubt one of the most voguish and thoughtfully styled of any I have visited on Block 338, blending different tones of wood with more industrial cylindrical suspended shades, enveloping bold floral fabric and unique screens which break up the space but don’t interrupt the flow of light or the eye as they take the form of the white silhouette of a tree as opposed to an intrusive hunk of wood or fabric. Suspended from the ceiling were a series of fascinating, coloured mesh pieces which are designed to mimic the hams which would be aged above bars in Rome. The eye is drawn in all directions but my favourite feature of all is the canvas which gives the illusion that you are viewing the scene whilst gliding down venetian canals on a gondola. Molto Bella! So many trendy spots are all show and no substance but Café Italia caters for all manner of clientele or occasion. Whether you are seeking an intimate venue for dinner, a convivial spot for a family gathering or an exclusive party venue the team can accommodate and suggest the perfect menu choices to complement the circumstance. My introduction to their fayre was delectably thin wagyu beef carpaccio which melted like a wafer on the tongue leaving the most incredible flavour on the palate. The baked mushrooms with a beautifully dressed salad were a fabulous choice for vegetarians or those wishing to broaden their culinary horizons. The crockery adds to the artistic vibe using a variety of colours and shapes in order to present the dishes in a way which pleases the eye as well as the taste buds. The inverted turtle shell platter upon which the six hour slow cooked Wagyu was served illustrated this most effectively. The beef was accompanied by vibrant yellow and orange vegetables which complemented the luscious richness of the cut. Equally the grilled salmon enrobed in a divinely decadent cream sauce and served with Baked potatoes showcased the technical brilliance of the team. The benchmark against which I measure of an Italian 88

Restaurant is that of the desserts, particularly the Tiramisu. It arrived complete with its own chocolate and pistachio encrusted measuring stick which took my impressions of Café Italia from fabulous to sublime. This was until I was presented with the chocolate fondant which was styled with the same attention to detail as my surroundings. The flower shaped fondant with a delicate buttery biscuit leaf and deep purple coulis was a culinary piece of art. I am seldom speechless but this silenced me for a few brief seconds of contemplation. Desperate for this experience not to end I ventured into the secluded garden and terrace area. Perfect for alFresco get togethers, particularly suited to larger groups wishing to have elbow room. The soothing trickle of the water features transports you from the hustle-and-bustle of Block 338 and creates a sense of serenity. It is genuinely a rarity to find such tranquillity combined with ornate décor , exclusivity and fabulously inventive eating. On all levels this surpassed expectations and is doubtless the ‘luogo di incontro’ or must see meeting place in Manama. @cafe_italia_adliya

ince its founding in 1916, the BMW brand has become synonymous with high-quality German engineering as well as both comfort and style. We at Ohlala never miss the opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of BMW’s latest offerings as was the case with the all-new BMW 3 Series Sedan. This experience was provided by the BMW Group Middle East and we could not have been more pleased to inspect and test-drive this stunning vehicle. Upon our first examination of the exterior we immediately noticed the Sedan’s modern design and sporty proportions, highlighted by precise lines and beautifully contoured surfaces. All of these features ensure that the aerodynamics of this model are fully optimised. The new interpretation of the LED headlights blends effortlessly into the front end as do the T-shaped air intakes. The slim, L-shaped, three-dimensional rear lights are another improved feature whilst the twin-pipe exhaust system not

only improves performance, but also adds to the car’s already proficient appearance. Still nodding our approval over the exterior, we slid inside the cabin to find out what the interior had to offer. Needless to say, we were not disappointed by what we discovered. As mentioned earlier, BMW is known for its style, comfort and quality. These attributes are prominently displayed throughout the inside of this 3 Series Sedan. All of the materials and trimmings used are of a premium standard and the pristine nature of the workmanship is obvious. The entire arrangement of this BMW has been precisely designed to maximise practicality and performance. The large surface screen, the grouping of the instrument cluster as well as the quality of the control display all stand out, whilst the clear surface layout and driver-focused cockpit both add to the hugely impressive style of this 3 series sedan. With plenty of shoulder and leg room throughout the vehicle and a boot with a capacity of 480 litres, space would never be an issue. www.ohlala-magazine.com

The on-road performance of this BMW more than matched the quality of its appearance and parts. This Sedan houses a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder engine that produces 258 hp (190 kW). This engine boasts BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that allows the 330i to bullet from 0 – 100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. The Electric Power Steering (EPS), ample grip on the corners as well as the hugely efficient braking system kept this power in check and helped to ensure a safe driving experience throughout. We had an enormous amount of fun driving around in this extremely capable vehicle and ultimately agreed that it would be great to have this model in the home garage. A number of features have been added to or improved upon for this model. Highlights of these include the Head-Up display with a 70% larger projection surface, the new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant as well as the extensive selection of driver assistance systems. These systems include Collision and Pedestrian Warning with Braking function as well as a Lane Departure Warning system. The driving stability systems include an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Corner Braking Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Performance Control and Dry Braking Function. Some of the many safety features include airbags for the driver and front passenger, side airbags for the driver and front passenger, head airbags at the front and rear, crash-active front head restraints, a crash sensor as well as a tyre pressure indicator. To aid the driver with parking, Parking Assistant with automated longitudinal and lateral guidance, Reversing Assistant, Park Distance Control, a rear-view camera and 360-degree cameras are all fitted as standard. You shouldn’t be scraping your car on anything anytime soon. content and purpose steeped in tradition. Whichever faith, race or walk of life you come from your right of passage into marital bliss will usually follow a particular formula and journey. Let’s take a look at some of the common threads which run through this special day. Dancing. At the heart of every celebration we usually find dancing of some description, but none more so than at a wedding. In many western weddings, particularly in the United Kingdom, the first dance from the bride and groom is much anticipated. Much time is spent deliberating the song choice which is usually pertinent to the story of the married couple. Traditionally the first dance signalled the commencement of the celebrations once the formalities had been concluded. The first dance can be traced back to the early civilisation of Egypt and India. As with so many things the Greeks cherish tradition and the first dance is no exception. The Kalamatlano and Zembekiko are danced separately by the Bride and Groom and their respective male and female guests before toasts and plate smashing. Also, King George II made chimney sweeps officially a symbol of Good Luck by Royal decree in 1700s after a Chimney Sweep had saved his life. Hand shakes and kisses from chimney sweeps are still much sort after by the happy couple.
