TTER E L It’s time to banish heavy knitted jumpers to the back of your wardrobe, because a new season is upon us. As we edge into spring/summer 2020, we can finally start wearing some of the trends we saw on the catwalks last September. Womenswear this spring combines playful tailoring, funky silhouettes, and unexpected layering for a new type of power dressing. This season is definitely following the notion of ‘more is more’ with finishing details adding an additional ‘oomph’. Although the coronavirus has left many of us fashion-loving folks confined to their homes, online shopping offers us plenty of time to recharge and renew in the style department. However, many of us have gained solace that all rules of etiquette have gone out the window whilst socially isolating - and that’s okay! For me personally, this period – although spiking my anxiety – has ultimately left me feeling comforted and gratified as I receive caring and considerate notes from my fashion-industry friends and contacts around the world. When you are so isolated, it means a lot. Take this time to reconnect with family and friends, but above all else, connect with yourself. Despite all the inconveniences of the confinement, I do see something positive coming out of the experience. We are more conscious of a strict hygiene routine, have had the rare time to reflect on what’s important in life, learned to appreciate family, friends and colleagues more after this long period of separation, and have become even more skilled conducting business online. Our work and lifestyle will change after this experience that’s for sure, and I’m all for it. Stay safe.

A COLOURBLOCK TALISMAN A variation of the iconic Move collection, Lucky Move is inspired by lucky charm medallions and, for the first time in Messika’s history, this new collection is the first of its kind to not use purely diamonds. Instead, the collection is adorned with coloured stones. A MYSTICAL AND SENTIMENTAL MEDALLION Messika has chosen to give pride of place to semi-precious and organic stones throughout this collection. When you’re self-quarantining, a lot of your normal routines — trips to the gym, daily grocery runs — must change out of necessity. But you can, for the most part, maintain a skincare routine. It might even provide a much-needed sense of normalcy when it feels like everything else is changing fast. Still, do you need to switch it up at all to accommodate your new reality? When it comes to skincare, the big difference between normal you and quarantine you is the amount of time you’re spending outside. You may not be getting as much sun — or even seeing the sun — as much as you normally do. Still, you shouldn’t forgo sunscreen. While it may be true that sunscreen is less important when you’re indoors, windows don’t filter out harmful UV rays, which means your face still needs protection. Dermatologists also suggest paying particular attention to (gentle!) exfoliation to keep the skin fresh and healthy. Think of this as similar to exfoliating after a flight: dry air may cause your skin to overproduce oil, which, if trapped under dead skin cells on your face, can cause breakouts. Exfoliating regularly will help get rid of those dead skin cells. Just be careful, as usual, not to over-exfoliate.
Spending so much time indoors also means you’re probably in dry air. This means hydration is more important than ever. If you’ve already switched to a lighter spring moisturiser, it may be wise to switch back to a rich moisturiser for now. Now is a time that you may want to use your face masks daily for even more hydration, any hydrating mask that works for you is a good choice here. If you want, social distancing is also an opportunity to take a break from makeup, which will give your sweat glands a chance to clear out. Plus, it’ll make your routine at the end of the day that much easier. Of course, it’s OK if you can’t bring yourself to be as strict about skincare as you used to be. This is a high-stress time for most of us, and strict routines provide comfort for some and anxiousness for others, especially when tensions are already high. It’s all about what will make you feel best in the long run! If you just want to wash your face and use a gentle moisturiser with sunscreen, that’s fine. If you want to commit to a 12-step routine and a full face of makeup every day, that’s fine too. One thing you shouldn’t skimp on, though: drinking lots and lots of water.

olistic yet technical, Dessange is undeniably a coveted beauty hotspot in Bahrain, and for good reason! For example, when it comes to overhauling my skincare regime I always find myself sauntering through their doors, especially since their senior therapist Joie can whip your face into shape with her honed massage techniques or take you on a skin journey complete with peels, massages and transformative technology. Dessange as an oasis forces me to have some ‘me’ time that I wouldn’t allow otherwise on account of my busy lifestyle. With my hectic schedule forever resting on my shoulders I’ve felt that my skin has been in a desperate need of a boost - now, more than ever. As of late I’ve felt that I have become more aware of the products I use as a health and environmentally conscious individual, especially when it comes to enjoying beauty treatments so I was delighted to book in some pampering that ticked all the corporate social responsibility boxes. As with any facial treatment, the beauty therapist asked me to fill out a consultation form and then continued to discuss the current condition of my skin. I know that I’ve got dull and dehydrated skin so I highlighted that I wanted a treatment which is more calming and moisturising. My therapist recommended that I try their Natural Results Facial which helps revitalise and energise dull-looking skin. More than a short-term solution, this particular treatment works to stimulate your own collagen production for longer-lasting plumpness – and the results are visible. While there’s a facial menu to choose from, there’s no one-size-fits all with Dessange, so you’re guaranteed the best in bespoke every time. The treatment’s products contain 100% plant-based, food grade ingredients and essential oils which means no chemicals or
synthetics. Since they are infused with concentrated botanical essences they have the aroma to heal, and the constitution to nourish, disinfect and clean. Rest assured this facial incorporates the best of detoxifying ingredients using a multitude of skin boosting properties such as honey, yoghurt, aloe vera, zests and seeds. This combination of herbal infusions, elixirs and plant waters nourishes your complexion and leaves you looking and feeling rested. My first step into the world of nature was when my skin was initially pampered with their homemade honey and coco milk cleanser which cleanses and exfoliates in a non-abrasive manner. This combination of ingredients actually retains moisture to battle signs of dryness, with the added bonus of its antibacterial properties to assist with any battle of blemishes – my recent anxiety induced breakout on my chin was in dire need of such assistance! To further soothe and refresh my skin an aloe vera and lemon toner was then applied before the exfoliator was unleashed to tackle dead skin cells. This combination of coconut oil, lime zest, chia seeds and sugar enhances circulation and cleanses pores whilst gently exfoliating to allow for the ultimate glow-up. My T-zone succumbed to steaming under the watchful eye of my therapist as my pores opened up ready to extract the build up of clogged pores. I always love this part! The toner was once again applied to sanitize the skin and tighten the pores prior to the face mask. To make my skin supple, some yoghurt with honey was added to my banana face mask which is ideal for my sensitive skin as it is host to a concoction of cooling blend high in amino acids and enzymes. This mask was left for 10 minutes as I enjoyed a delectable scalp massage. Coconut, cucumber and lavender essential oil were mixed together and applied as a moisturiser as www.ohlala-magazine.com

the finishing step to this luxuriant treatment which left me with a radiant luminescent glow There is no added water or alcohol, and the 100% active ingredients are absorbed into the skin easily, resulting in a dewy, hydrated complexion. It feels like an enjoyable brain freeze and we can literally sense the concoction working its magic as they massage it into our hair and scalp. As I was suffering with a flare up of dandruff the honey was used to strengthen the hair follicles and work its antiinflammatory properties. Wanting to promote hair growth? Look no further than cinnamon. Yes, it might have you thinking of the festive season, however you’ll be thankful that you can enjoy this wonder all year round as it is a great exfoliant, and its primary benefits are due to the spice’s ability to promote circulation. Stimulated circulation, in turn, promotes hair growth. Wishing your hair could rival Rapunzel? Well, yoghurt complements the former ingredients and controls hair fall by improving scalp health and reducing the clogging of follicles making for optimum scalp health. Once this dream team of ingredients were applied my hair was then wrapped in cling film, followed by a hot towel to amplify the advantageous properties of the ingredients as I sat with the mixture in my hair and enjoyed a coffee. Choices, choices, choices....there couldn’t be a more apt name for this restaurant on account of well, the ‘choices’ on offer. As we approached the ART Rotana Hotel, the web-like exterior of woven steel is breathtaking and makes a bold statement for your experience here. Whether a staying guest, a casual diner or visitor to the Friday Brunch, as I was, you cannot fail to stand for a moment in awe as modern art meets engineering at its best. The hotel boasts impressive views of the Arabian Gulf combined with state-of-the-art facilities and a veritable louvre of design pieces throughout. Had I not been eager to sample the buffet I could have idled away the afternoon meandering through the various lounges and public spaces. Choices Restaurant plays host to The Weekend Brunch Extravaganza where those with a voracious appetite and love of multiplicity will find great satisfaction. The setting is contemporary and modish with dashing grey and black furniture punctuated with explosions of citrus greens and oranges which are refreshing and vivid. The views afforded by the floor- to-ceiling windows and the option of outdoor dining makes it the perfect brunch base. Throughout the year there is also a rotation of themed brunches to keep things interesting and fresh, no matter the occasion. The vast selection of soups, handcrafted baked goods and crisp salads cater for those wishing for something lighter, healthier or simply something to whet their appetite. The meditteranean prowess showcased throughout is evident at their dedicated Crostini station that we devoured as our starting appetiser, consisting of small slices of a vast selection of toasted bread and toppings. It wasn’t long until I followed the familiar aroma of masala spices to the corner dedicated to all things Asian. It boasted pots of creamy curries and delicately spiced meats and fish. The restaurant boasts a ‘children’s zone’ where younger diners can work up an appetite and expand their minds before being tempted to try the freshly baked pizzas and global delicacies.

The carnivorous carnival of meat drawing you towards the roast station is without a doubt the most spectacular centerpiece. My amiable host explained that the chefs are happy to prepare many cuts to your own exacting standards before serving you at your table. In addition to this there are a variety of freshly prepared, sumptuous roasts loaded onto white platters for you to devour at your leisure over at the Art Special section. Beef Brisket, Lamb Leg, Salmon, Turkey and Duck can all be found here ready for you to salivate over. The fresh fish and crustacea is plentiful and can also be grilled to order. Not to be missed is their Fish and Chips station, although you can opt to attend their Shrimp and Chips station for an alternate bounty from the sea, if you so wish. The fact they are presented in nifty cones brings us nostalgic memories from our seaside visits in the UK showcases itself as an added bonus. Iced platters of crab, black mussels,calamari, sushi and other seafood delights can be found close by. Art Rotana replenish their stations regularly, so you can be sure that you receive only the freshest of cuisine. This statement is proven through their continuous bold and beautiful car designs such as the new Maserati Levante S GranLusso. Their tagline: “Excellence through passion” is what we were hoping to find when taking up the driver’s seat of this stunning vehicle. Maserati entered the SUV market in recent years where the original Levante models soon proved to be a huge success. Their latest offering is set to improve on their now already established foothold in the premium SUV market and our Diva was most excited to thoroughly inspect their latest offering. The exterior of the GranLusso clearly showcases the Maserati DNA throughout. The imposing signature grille has been designed to make an
immediate visual impact and pays homage to historical Maserati models such as the Tipo 60 Birdcage. In the same way that one appreciates a Gucci Dionysus or the Versace Medusa bags, the muscular shape of the vehicle’s shoulders gives it a distinctive and attractive style that only the Italians can provide. The streamlined nature of the overall design is accentuated by the flow of the front wings, emphasising the shape of the engine compartment lid and running into the headlight surrounds at the frontend. These effective headlights feature both Bi-Xenon and LED technology. The silhouette of the Levante moves from its felineinspired headlights along the side of the car to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar. The result is a coupé look that is enhanced by the frameless doors. The side profile is defined by a swaged line that runs the entire length of the car that highlights its muscular shape and emphasises its underlying strength. The real excitement of the day began when the ignition was engaged. The Levante S GranLusso houses a V6 twin-turbo GDI petrol engine designed and manufactured by Ferrari. With 430 hp @ 5570 rpm and 580 Nm of flat torque in “sport” mode, this Maserati is capable of powering from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 264km/h. The feeling of this large machine surging effortlessly forward was exciting to say the least made all the better by the thought of the eco-friendly nature of this new generation of Maserati engines. It may be tempting to keep your eyes fixed on the TV or social media news feeds as you try to keep yourself informed by reading every quarantine update that pops up on your phone—but worrying yourself can be like sitting in a rocking chair: it can give you something to do, but it doesn’t necessarily get you anywhere. Take this rare opportunity and turn the isolation to your advantage; because the world is improved when its occupants are inspired and motivated, rather than anxious and overwhelmed. Annoying as it is, lounging around at home does have its upsides – you can finally indulge in all those things you never have time for, whether it be taking a cooking masterclass, attending to your cracked heels or getting through that book you’ve been ignoring all year. Make the most of your kitchen and try out a new recipe. Make something you “never have time” to cook - you might just surprise yourself with the results. Whilst clearing out your wardrobes you can sew those buttons or small holes that you always pass off. Yeah, remember that hole that was left after you ripped the tag off your shirt? Repair it in 15 minutes with some needle and thread. Do the once-a-year jobs: Flip over and rotate your mattress so you can sleep better; purge your phone of bad photos and contacts you don’t want
anymore; dust the bookshelf; clean out your clothes and load up a giveaway bag. Why not make a pandemic playlist whilst you’re at it to boost morale during such activities? Remember, feel-good songs only! The importance of focusing on self care cannot be ignored. You now have more time to sit quietly and meditate. Do some stretches in the morning. Soak in a bathtub with some candles. Scrub your feet. Do a face mask if you have some on hand. Use your good china and tablecloths to eat a homemade dinner with some soft music playing — and remember to drink plenty of water! There’s nothing like quarantine to indulge in a small TV binge. Luckily enough, the amount of good TV out there will most definitely take a few weeks to get through. Enjoy traditional puzzles like crosswords and jigsaws as well as online trivia games that can be wonderfully beneficial for your cognitive health too! Remember, you aren’t alone. Make the most out of modern day technology and text, WhatsApp, and video call your family and even someone you haven’t spoken to in awhile. Think of this as a great opportunity to reconnect. Take the time to catch up on all the things you never get around to, whether binge-watching TV, making shakshuka or soothing your cracked heels. Stay safe.
