The Celia line comes in three models comprising a handbag, a shoulder bag and a classical baguette from AIGNER’s history. The eye-catching feature is a brushed metal element with a brass finish. This detail was inspired by a belt buckle from the ‘90s and updated with an ‘A’ logo. All the other metal components embody the heritage of the brand and are reinterpreted in a contemporary way. The Livia series brings ruched and ruffled handles or shoulder straps, giving the simple and classic bag an original character. The texture of the handles creates a contrast with the bag’s clean, smooth surface and its boxy and fanned shape. A distinctive golden fastening in the shape of a round ‘A’ logo finalises the design. The carriers are the ultimate add-on to your summery floral dresses, or laid-back khaki looks. They also add the wow factor to office picks and special occasion outfits.

N

ature is an influential inspiration for the fashion world in all its aspects, and AIGNER Spring/Summer 2021 embodies this concept in its Mother Nature collection. The natural factor can be spotted from the colour palette to the designs. The new range is also an encounter between modern structures and well-loved vintage shapes. The shades vary from delicate moss green to strong matcha green, accompanied by earthy brown tones such as terra brown or walnut. Raw materials such as leather, jute and straw are predominant in the creations. The brand is focusing on sustainability and making conscious use of our planet’s precious resources. Tradition and precise craftsmanship play an essential role in this collection. Pieces from the company’s archives, classic techniques and ideas are adopted and are combined with modern methods to create a new kind of artistry. The Alexis bag is inspired by a shaving case from the AIGNER past collections and becomes a trendy item with its fresh colours. You find it in fine grain leather in the shades of black, terra brown or eyecatching bellflower blue. A special variant of the design, made with soft top-grain leather, comes in black, burgundy and moss green.

resses are the most feminine clothing pieces in a girl’s wardrobe, and they are being celebrated in Noon by Noor’s digital campaign, The Sahara. The line comes in a limited series of online-exclusive dresses that are only available at noonbynoor.com. The loose-fitting cuts and relaxed shapes are perfect for Ramadan looks or stylish loungewear. Some of the designs also come in smaller versions for the ‘mini-me’ concept – mummy and daughter look alikes. The colour palette is rich, painted in clematis pink, rose red, deep ocean blue and optic white, contrasting with softer shell pink, soft green, and pale buttercup yellow. Chiffon, organza and cotton are some of the materials used, providing the perfect pick for lazy days and relaxed evenings with friends and family. Some of the dresses are lightweight in cotton jacquard, while others have dramatic sweeping hems and can be dressed up or down for day or evening. A jumpsuit in sand-washed material with front pleated detail and a wide-leg silhouette is added to the collection. The designer Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa, says the designs were created to be comfortable, with a low-key kind of indulgence that lets you transform the piece you are wearing to your own style. “The woman wearing these creations can offset the look with an heirloom necklace, her favourite earrings or beautiful slides – that’s all it takes to make it hers,” she explains.

THE

ICONIC BLUE

Find your dream piece of jewellery with a hint of remarkable design at Tiffany & Co. whether for that special someone or the most valuable person in the world – yourself.

T

he sight of a blue box (or is it turquoise?) with a big white bow is enough to make any woman sigh in pure bliss. The ‘Tiffany Blue’ shade was selected by founder Charles Lewis Tiffany. The hue was chosen to be the cover of the Blue Book, Tiffany’s annual collection of exquisite and handcrafted jewels, which was first published in 1845. The tone became popular, and Charles’ brand was acclaimed as the palace of jewels for its exceptional gemstones. Tiffany & Co. has become synonymous with elegance, innovative design, fine craftsmanship and creative excellence. Its fame grew worldwide with store network expansion and continuous cultural relevance, exemplified by Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring Audrey Hepburn. Even Eartha Kitt wanted some ‘decorations bought at Tiffany’!

Anything from Tiffany & Co. makes a memorable gift for birthdays, anniversaries or even just to show appreciation to the women in your life (yourself included). The latest collections bring a selection of pieces that go from 18-carat rose gold bracelets to pavé diamond earrings. Collections such as Hardwear, Atlas X, Elsa Peretti and Tiffany T1 are the perfect gift that will be treasured forever. JEWELLERY

Edit

Inspired

by Nature

Quintessential jewellery is part of PASQUALE BRUNI’s signature collections. Their creations are constantly evolving; however, their iconic shapes are eternal.

Giardini Segreti

Inspired by the secret gardens of Milan, this collection is all about art and nature and pays tribute to the female world full of passion. The Giardini Segreti is now introducing the long-chain, Sautoir. Flowers, leaves and butterflies shine gracefully on the skin. The rings collection is modelled on the hands to coordinate in harmony with the body and its movements. Every woman has the chance to create a secret garden of her own. The collection offers a precious matching bracelet, necklace and earrings that follow the body’s lines, all in the light of diamonds.

34

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Goddess Garden

This high-end jewellery line revolves around the iconic Plumeria flower representing the excellence of PASQUALE BRUNI’s manufacturing with its unparalleled skill and techniques that have always distinguished the maison. Savoir-faire, creativity and technical skills are the essences of this collection. Its modular structure allows it to be transformed into four different jewels. The softness of the knitted joints is just one of its secrets: every single flower has its own unique mobility so that the jewellery can perfectly accompany the body’s movement. The matching necklace and earrings culminate in drops of morganite and tanzanite. The collection is completed by a bracelet that transforms into a choker.

Petit Garden

The Giardini Segreti expands its creations and nature with inspiration from Bali, with its exotic flowers, and Hawaii, with its mighty ocean, to give life to the Petit Garden collection. The cascade of diamonds that characterise the choker, rings and bracelets represents blades of grass made of rose and white gold encrusted with diamonds. The jewels can be worn on their own or combined like garlands of flowers.

Petit Joli and Ton Joli

Aleluià

This collection is an ode to beauty and love. The leaves reflect wings that empower women, redefining their divinity. The plates are crafted and set one by one, to then be assembled later. This technique makes it possible to maintain the shape of the leaves and the precision of the overlays. The pieces are available in different combinations of white, yellow, and rose gold and adorned with diamonds and yellow sapphires. This piece can also be worn in various ways. For example, the adjustable black velvet bracelet can be connected to the front of the collier to create a choker or a long, luxurious necklace with the addition of two bracelets.

This collection is designed for women who are always looking for balance; sophisticated yet natural, determined yet spontaneous, dramatic yet serene, and a dreamer yet down-to-earth. The concept behind its creation is flowers that take on the sky, space, and earth colours. Lapis lazuli, white agate, pink chalcedony and onyx are the gems used to create the collection. The Ton Joli line comes in green and white agate to represent nature. One of PASQUALE BRUNI’s abilities is to unite different symbols, the lunar and earthly worlds. The collection features rings, stud earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Shiny Lips A new generation of lipsticks enters the world of CHANEL. We want to introduce you to the Rouge Coco Bloom collection. CHANEL’s makeup line gets another addition, the Rouge

Coco Bloom, a new generation of lipsticks with extra colour and shine. All you need is a single layer to coat the lips with intensity and luminosity. The line represents the perfect balance between a lipstick’s richness and the shine of a gloss. The patented formula developed by CHANEL delivers a durable and plumping effect. Rouge Coco Bloom’s story began in 2016 when the CHANEL Research Laboratory, based in Japan, took on the challenge to combine colour, lasting-hold, and shine in a single product. As tests evolved, the formula was perfected until a texture that melts on the lips while retaining its shine and long-lasting properties was found. The success came with a high concentration of micronised pigments and a naturally sourced film-forming agent. Micro-droplets of high refractive index oil were added to enhance the shape of the lips.

38

www.ohlala-magazine.com

The Rouge Coco Bloom line stays with you for eight hours and comes in 20 vibrant shades. You can stand out with Alive, a classic red with a subtle rust undertone that gives it warmth and character. Or embrace the romantic woman in you with Radiant, a mauve-tinted reinterpretation of the universal rosewood. If reds are not your favourite tone, go for Merveille, a soft and delicate dusky rose. Of, if you like to impress, opt for Sunlight and its orange and terracotta tint, the ideal shade to put you in a good mood while enhancing your complexion. Stress-Free Our complexions are a reflection of our overall health, both physical and mental. Givenchy dedicates its new skincare range to battling the effects of stress on our business card – our faces!

Stress is part of contemporary life, it can come

from different sources such as work, family life, pandemic, the list goes on. And the affects of this emotional unbalance effect our complexions directly. However, skincare lines haven’t been specifically created to combat this ‘invisible’ enemy – until now. Ressource is Givenchy’s new skincare range, developed to fight the negative results of stress on our skin. The level of hydration in our complexion drops when we are exposed to psychological fatigue. Its surface, where stress alters the barrier function’s permeability, and inside the cells, where stress has a significant impact on the skin’s moisture level, are the main casualties of this harmful factor. Ressource is an anti-stress moisturising treatment that corrects the damaging effects of this kind of tension on the skin and rebalances its moisture content to provide absolute comfort. Because stressed skin can also mean sensitive skin, the formulas in Ressource have been pared down to only what is essential. They are rich in natural ingredients and created to

work with the skin and minimise any other reactions. Givenchy laboratories have created the Beauty Moss Complex, an antidote against damage to the skin caused by environmental and emotional stress. This complex is made from 100-per-cent natural ingredients such as moss and everlasting flower. Moss reactivates the flow of water through the skin to keep cells hydrated. While everlasting flower helps retain the water found naturally in the skin and strengthens its barrier, it stops moisture from evaporating. The range has an extra value; the jars and bottles used for the Ressource line are made of recyclable materials that can be easily separated when the product has been used. The packaging is made using sustainably managed forests and with biosourced inks. @givenchybeauty

Mini Size,

Maxi Style Is it lipstick or a cute accessory? The answer is both! The new Mini Tints from Herrera Beauty are the charms to accompany you wherever you go.

T

he fashion house Carolina Herrera

is well-known for its impeccable cuts and distinct designs. In 2019 the brand launched its beauty line, Herrera Beauty, blurring the lines between beauty, jewellery and high fashion. A range of ultraperformant, fully customisable lipsticks, compacts and accessories debuted in early 2020. Following the success of this makeup range, Herrera Beauty releases a new line of refillable lipsticks called Mini Tints. In various shades and innovative textures, the little lip smackers join the signature sheer, satin, and matte formulas to extend the brand’s lipstick offer. “With the new Mini Tints, the focus is on creating that natural, yet super polished hint of colour,” says Lauren Parsons, Herrera Beauty global makeup consultant. The mini lipsticks are available in seven shades, with true reds and deep plums; they are small in size but big in glossy results. Herrera Beauty’s sheerest formula yet delivers a buildable hint of tint that lasts up to six hours in one smooth, melting swipe. Lips appear plumped for longer thanks to a one-per-cent concentration of patented Maxi-Lip, for a luminous and radiant effect. Wear them, gift them, adapt them to your unique style. “The fact that you can personalise your makeup to suit your sense of fashion is what made the launch of Herrera Beauty so special, and that’s definitely something that we wanted to continue,” highlights Carolina A. Herrera, beauty creative director. “You can mix and match the caps and bottom colours to create different combinations. Plus, every single product is refillable, which means that you can change what’s inside your makeup case too.” Each shade of Mini Tint is also available as a refill, meaning that you can top up your signature case for as long as you want or switch shades according to the seasons and your mood. And because they’re refillable, the Mini Tints help you cut down on packaging waste.

Ramadan

Skincare101

The Holy Month can be challenging on your skin, but if you focus on hydration and follow a few other tips, you can end up with an even better complexion.

D

uring the Holy Month, it is essential to pay extra attention to your skin. Fasting and lack of sleep, combined with hot weather, can cause more damage than you may realise. Dr Nedhal Khalifa, consultant dermatologist, aesthetics and laser surgery specialist, points out the best way to protect your complexion while embracing this spiritual period. Hydration is the key to healthy skin. But if you consider that our bodies are 60- to 70-per-cent water, this precious liquid is actually necessary to keep most of the body functioning. Be very conscious of how much fluid you are taking during this period; drink it often in small quantities from Iftar to Suhoor. The type of food you ingest is also important to consider. “Oily and sugary foods are a staple in our cuisine, and people tend to eat them a lot during this time; however, you should avoid them because they can cause breakouts and make the skin look dull,” says Dr Nedhal. She also mentions that you should reduce sugar intake, not only because it is bad for your health, but because sugar increases the skin’s ageing process. “Sugar can decrease collagen production, speeding up the process of ageing,” she adds. Choosing the right product to keep your complexion hydrated and clean is another point to pay attention to. “For oily skin, I recommend using water-based products and light moisturiser, but for mature skin, I suggest the use of a richer moisturiser,” advises Dr Nedhal. She adds: “Ramadan is falling in a hot month, so don’t forget to wear sunscreen after your moisturiser on a daily basis.” A gentle cleanser used twice a day, and staying away from harsh scrubs is also a good practice. If you don’t know what type of beauty items to pick, seek expert advice before treating your skin. Hydrating facial treatments are a great ally to fight the dry complexion caused by dehydration. Skin therapies that include vitamin C are an excellent choice for their rejuvenation and radiance properties. “One question that I am frequently asked is if procedures with injectables are allowed during this period. I safely say yes, because everything that is injected is done in the upper layer of the skin and dermis, and this does not interfere whatsoever with fasting,” highlights Dr Nedhal. The last piece of advice is that exercising shouldn’t be neglected this month. It is common knowledge that moving is essential to general health but, in addition, it has specific benefits for the skin as it improves circulation. Also, sweating releases toxins acting as a detoxifying tool. “Because of fasting, Ramadan is, in general, a good time to detoxify your body as a whole, and if you follow these tips, it will be easy to end up with clearer glowing skin,” concludes Dr Nedhal.

Quick Tips - Stay away from sodas and caffeinate drinks. They suck out the minerals in the body, which reflects negatively on the skin. - Pamper your eyes, otherwise dark circles might appear. Give a little massage, and cover with cucumbers or cool camomile tea bags to improve circulation and hydration in the area. During the night, apply a vitamin C serum. - Load up on nuts. Ingest cashews, almonds and walnuts. They contain fibres and fatty acids that play a significant role in rejuvenating your skin. - Moisturise! Every AM and PM. - Use a mild skin cleanser free of heavy fragrances and artificial colours, and don’t over wash your face. - Avoid oil-based makeup; opt for a water-based foundation. - Invest in a good-quality lip-balm to be applied regularly. - Leave the chemical peels and laser treatments to when Ramadan finishes. - Eat lots of fruits and vegetables as they are rich in vitamins and minerals. - Drink plenty of water in small quantities.

Wellness

Pursuit Ramadan is a spiritual month. However, it is essential to take good care of your body during this period. Dessange has the perfect training option to try, as this editor discovered.

46

www.ohlala-magazine.com

I

t was a beautiful Saturday morning when I headed to Dessange to be pampered and have a great me-moment once again. This time, I was invited to experience their health club. Yes, Dessange is a whole beauty sanctuary where you not only find spa and salon treatments, but your body can also get some necessary attention. You are seen and treated as a whole. The Dessange Health Club offers dance and yoga classes; it has a gym area full of windows letting the light in for a pleasant training session; a Pilates room with all necessary types of equipment; and a round room in the middle with the perfect vibe for the sought after spinning classes. But, I went there to try something different, the EMS (Electro Muscle Stimulation) training. It might sound too technological, but that is the best part, I love technology! This system of training uses a wearable device that attaches to the body (through a special suit), stimulating your muscles via tiny electrodes that accelerate your workout and enhance your body-toning results. The trick? EMS training is an excellent way to improve your overall fitness, tone your body and strengthen your muscles in less time than regular exercise. I arrived at the health club, and Slavka, my EMS trainer, invited me for a chat before she got me strapped up and started. She had a list of questions, which mean that you shouldn’t be trying this kind of training if you have a severe health condition. But not me; I’m good to move forward. She further explained that there are three types of programmes, a strength option, used for beginners, a metabolism function that mixes cardio with the strength programme, and body relax, which is perfect for athletes or anyone looking for rehabilitation. She picked the strength programme for me, with a duration of 20 minutes. We then moved to the gym area where the EMS machine is located. She sprayed some water into the vest and straps/belts that were going to be placed on my thighs, glutes and arms. Water is a good electric conductor, and we wanted the pulses to be delivered at their best. I felt like Lara Croft, ready to go into action! www.ohlala-magazine.com

47

BEAUTY Boutique Slavka connected me to the machine and turned it on, activating each area one by one and asking me if I could feel a tingling sensation. I did, and it didn’t feel as strange as I thought it would. The programme starts with a red light (the period when you should rest), moves to yellow (which means get set) and green (exercise!). My trainer was next to me the entire session, and she guided me in what kind of movement I should be doing in the four seconds of green-light mode. We started with squats and lunges and moved to the upper body with vertical abs and some arm movements. If you think you won’t be doing much, that’s an easy initial mistake. I had to catch my breath from time to time, which made me feel good, as if I was engaged in an intense type of movement. The exercises are very specific, to tackle the body’s main areas, combined with the electric impulses that mimic the natural reaction your brain sends to the muscles to contract them. It might sound like a very modern method, but its origins stretch as far back as the 18th century. The use of EMS has improved over the years, and the electrical pulse is low and completely safe. The feeling of the current is gentle and non-invasive and activates deeper muscles that a normal exercise wouldn’t.

I was very curious about this training concept, and I was right to be. So much science combined with simple movements to deliver exciting results. As the session proceeds, you become used to the electric pulses, and they feel quite comfortable. I have to confess that I quite liked them, and it was an enjoyable experience. Slavka told me that you start feeling a change in your body after the fourth session and that you shouldn’t do EMS more than twice a week so as not to stress your body, particularly if you are a beginner like me. I was a bit sore the next day, but the good kind of pain that makes you want more movement in your life!

THE

MONTH OF

LIGHT Whether you celebrate Ramadan or not, embracing the Holy Month and its traditions becomes part of who we are when living in the Middle East.

R

amadan is upon us and offers a reason to decelerate life and focus on connecting with yourself spiritually and being grateful for all you’ve got. After one whole year of living in a pandemic, it’s essential to look inside ourselves; it can be through religion or as a time to connect with yourself on a deeper level. We need to find the strength to continue, and an introspective retreat can give us hope for better days ahead. The Holy Month comes with a certain vibe and customs, some of which can be embraced by us all. We want to share with you some of the aspects of this reflective moment and how they can be implemented in our lives.

Fashion is a way to show the world an aspect of our personality and to express, without saying a word, who we are. The modest way of dressing is an elegant trend, and many women around the world have been opting for this kind of style, where most of the skin is covered. The results are classy and well-thought-out looks. To enter the spirit of Ramadan, jalabiyas and abayas are the pieces to wear. Flowy and comfortable items are a good pick for your daily chores and pretty enough to go out and about your (essential) errands. “During Ramadan, people become very spiritual and connected with their soul, and they want to feel comfortable, so jalabiyas and abayas are the best options,” says Hiba Elbashir. She is a fashion designer that works with a traditional Sudanese cotton fabric called d’amour in her brand Diba. She adds that this period is the best moment to embrace the ‘less is more’ concept. “The clothing should be spacious and not tight to the body, and pieces have to be very simple with not too many details.” However, suppose you have a special occasion or events to attend during this period (hopefully in open spaces following all the health measures for everyone’s safety). In that case, Camila de Zorzi, a fashion designer with her own eponymous brand, believes that the details make all the difference. “In my opinion, small eye-catching elements, such as handmade embroidery, add value to the pieces.” Her brand pays full attention to these little details. “When you have something made by hand, the clothing items or accessories come to life,” she adds.

Black is the most common colour in abayas, and lots of women choose to wear it during the Holy Month. But not all. “I work only with one colour in all my collections, the natural white tint of the cotton, and I create my pieces adding a few splashes of colour and some patterns; I think the simpler, the better,” says Hiba. She also believes that black is a royal shade and not the best pick for the period. Fashion trends influence the abaya and jalabiya market, but not to the same extent as seen in ready-to-wear collections. “I believe in lifestyle more than trends, despite adjusting some aspects that are part of the transformations in our society, my brand has its own voice, and we focus on handmade details more than trends,” explains Camila. She adds that if there is a colour to pick this Ramadan, it would be lavender, a healing and girlish shade. When it comes to accessories to add to your Ramadan looks, both designers have the same opinion. They must be minimal and not create too much distraction. “Ramadan is a good moment to wear silver jewellery; it emanates strong vibes, and the scarves during this period should be very simple,” says Hiba. While Camila adds: “I believe that the right pair of shoes is capable of defining any outfit.” International brands such as Carolina Herrera, Max Mara, Etro and Loro Piana curated their collections to select the best picks for Ramadan. At the same time, regional bands have designed unique pieces to be worn during the Holy Month.

AMOUAGE

Scents

RASASI

Even Shakespeare understood the importance of fragrance in this part of the world. His Lady Macbeth mentions that: “All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand,” in his play Macbeth. The whole world knows that the scents coming from the Arab countries are strong, made with high-quality ingredients and part of the culture and everyday life. Amber, musk, henna, jasmine, frankincense, sandalwood and oud are some of the most popular ingredients found in perfumes created in the MENA region. The Middle East’s smell is traditional and opulent, just like its rich culture and décor taste. The quintessential aroma can be felt as soon as you arrive in the Middle East, not only from its people but from the incense burners placed in malls and perfume shops. They add an extra ambience to the environment.

Bukhoor is the Arabic name given to scented bricks or a blend of natural traditional ingredients, soaked in fragrant oils and placed in charcoal burners known as Mabkhara. These scented chips/bricks are used on special occasions or to perfume the house or store and boost positive energy. In Islamic history, all prophets are known to have used bukhoor regularly, mainly on Fridays. The eminent Queen of Yemen, Arwa Suleyhi used to send large wooden boxes of bukhoor to Najaf, Karbala and Egypt in the Holy Month of Ramadan. When it was burnt, the sacred cities’ atmosphere was pleasant, and people knew that Yemen’s gift had reached its destination. The habit of burning incenses and scenting both your home and yourself is intensified during Ramadan.

54

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Decoration

This period is also all about getting your home ready for your spiritual journey and receiving guests (in a smaller number this year). The decoration varies from home to home, but some elements are present in most households at this time. “The key components in Ramadan decorations include the half-moon, called Hilal, stars, lanterns and candles,” explains Dalal Al Balushi, an event designer. The Fanoos are the traditional Ramadan lanterns used to decorate homes and gardens, and they are a symbol of hope to light the way from the darkness. However, they also have a practical meaning: “Lights are used a lot during the Holy Month, the reason behind this is that most activities take place after the sun sets, so lanterns and candles help to light up the night,” comments Dalal. Many activities during Ramadan happen around the table, so most of the decorations have their focus in the dining area. The cloths and table runners usually feature Islamic geometric mosaic patterns used in the Arabic traditional seating. Other designs may include modern Moroccan motifs or Arabic calligraphy, that can also be used on pillows and in general decoration. There are different seating arrangements; families can sit at a regular dining table or take a more traditional approach during this period with a floor setting, using cushions, the mesane, paired with a floor mat, the suffrah. “Table or suffrah arrangements will include plates of different shapes and sizes, bowls and trays depending on the variety of food served and also the traditional Dallah for serving Arabic coffee and tea. Candles, lanterns, and flowers are added for décor as something extra,” concludes Dalal.

Food

And because we are talking about table decorations, we must remember that the food served is another essential detail. Fasting has significance in teaching patience, compassion and gratitude. During Ramadan, Muslins fast during the whole day, and after the sun sets, the breaking of the fast occurs. The first things to be ingested are dates with labneh or milk, followed by light appetisers such as falafel and samboosa. The interesting fact is that you should eat an odd number of dates, so one, three or even five. This practice started because Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) broke his fast with three dates and water. Dates are an excellent source of fibre, natural sugar, iron and magnesium, helping to restore blood sugar after long hours of fasting. Iftar is then served, and soups are the favourite starters as they replenish the body fluids and warm the stomach to receive the other foods. Fresh vegetables in salads such as fattoush are an excellent source of fibre, vitamins and minerals. They help to reduce bloating and constipation, which is a recurrent problem among fasting people. Main courses are a mix of rice, usually machboos (prepared with different condiments and proteins like chicken or lamb), stuffed vegetables and grills. Side dishes are composed of mezze (hummus, mutabal, baba ganoush and tabouleh served with each family or restaurant’s flatbread recipe). The feast is not complete without an array of delicious desserts and sweets, like kunafa, Umm Ali and flaky baklavas. Hydration is also a matter to consider; therefore, do not full the stomach with water at sunset. The best way to rehydrate the body is to drink small quantities of liquid regularly between Iftar and Suhoor (the last meal before sunrise). Excessively salty and spicy foods increase the need for water consumption, so it’s better to avoid them. The month of Ramadan is the perfect time to reflect on your life and your attitudes. You can use this period to improve your relationship with yourself, others and the world around you.

Chic Discretion Leem’s spring and summer 2021 collection brings discreet yet stylish designs to incorporate into your modest wardrobe. @leem_global

A conservative wardrobe with a fashionable twist is the goal of many women, and traditional cuts mixed with bold details are the way to embrace a fashion forward style. Leem has been establishing its brand in the region since 2018 and has earned a loyal modest fashion clientele globally. Its stylish silhouettes make a statement between traditional fit and modern flair. Leem’s all-inclusive motto makes its designs fit for all women, whether they choose to wear the brand’s pieces for cultural reasons or personal style preference. The brand’s aesthetic is full of free-flowing kaftans, maxi skirts and dresses, timeless trenches and tailored power suits with fluid, ambiguous layers. The creations follow the principals of sleek structure and elegant lines. Besides its clothing collection, an array of daring accessories, such as turbans, cufflinks, earrings, head scarf pins, brooches and hats with attached hijabs, compose the add-ons. Leem’s SS21 collection explores ultra-feminine compositions with floral prints, prairie dresses, soft gradient hues, swishing pleats, and sheer fabrics. The season also sees the interjection of bold trends via eye-catching statements, including exaggerated shoulders, vibrant pops of solid colour, studded embellishments, ethnic print accents, photographic prints on a jersey and the classic yet striking use of monochrome. Neutral hues are infused and layered with bold accents of colour, while 1970s’ silhouettes take the stage through wide-legged, high-waisted trousers. Flowing dresses in soft, feminine shapes and low-slung knotted hijabs are wardrobe staples for the modest woman this season. The colour scheme is composed of shades of white, glistening gold, fresh aqua, cobalt blue, and jet black paired with pops of vibrant hues such as warm yellow, orange and teal. The palette is further focused on eccentric splashes of pink with yellow, emerald, mint and dark green and, not to forget, khaki, a beloved summer classic. The abaya collection is painted in solid tones, vibrant patterns in grey hues and some pieces incorporate splashes of colour. Cleverly created to be worn during the warmer months; some designs have built-in dresses and abaya styles on the outside that form one piece, avoiding the need for layering. This style makes modest wear a comfortable choice in summer. 58

EVERYTHING HAS

TWO SIDES

Looking for a destination to put you in contact with nature and avoid crowds, but with something special? Enjoy the moment to explore a different side of Greece. Greece is a synonym for paradisal islands buzzing with people and parties, breathtaking beaches and views. However, with the new normal demanding no parties and social distancing, we wander in different terrain to explore this rocky highland country’s mountainsides. You might not find high-end, luxurious resorts, but it will certainly be a sumptuous experience. The best way to explore these hidden escapes is to land in Athens at the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport and rent a car. Roads are well signed and of good quality, with some tolls along the way. Get ready to experience a road trip with some breathtaking views from time to time. If you are heading to Kalavryta, make a stop at the Corinth Canal, which separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, for a memorable photo.

KALAVRYTA COG TRAIN

KALAVRYTA

CAVE OF THE LAKES

A mountainous town on the northern side of the Peloponnese, Kalavryta is historically known for a cruel massacre during World War II when Nazi troops killed the entire male population. And History was written in this small town. At the Monastery of Agia Lavra, the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire was declared, and the place stands now as a symbol of freedom. Nowadays, the picturesque town has other attractions for your must-visit list. Due to its proximity to the ski centre on the slopes of Mount Helmos, it becomes a favourite destination during winter. Hiking is another sport activity; while sightseeing, you can spot the Monastery of Mega Spileo, which was carved against the rocky mountain walls. Another great spot is the Cave of the Lakes, a natural creation divided into three caves connected by corridors surrounded by stalactite and stalagmite formations. The cave houses a 2,000m-long underground river (but you can only walk 500m) which forms many small lakes. You may want to just spend a day in town, or you can opt to leave your car down in Diakofto and get a cog train (the Odontotos railway) to reach Kalavryta. The scenic route is 22km long and takes one hour. It goes from sea level to 700m high; considering that it was built at the end of the 19th century (1885-1895), the racks were an engineering innovation. The train cuts through Vouraikos Gorge’s steep slopes, tunnels, bridges, and plane trees with a stop to admire the Monastery of Mega Spileo. It is considered one of the most scenic train routes in Greece.

ARACHOVA

ARACHOVA

ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE OF DELPHI

Referred to as the winter Mykonos, Arachova is in a hilly area, only two-anda-half hours’ drive from Athens. Built at an altitude of 980 metres, Arachova stands on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, only 8km from the archaeological site of Delphi, the centre of the world, according to Greek mythology. Despite being a favourite spot during the cold months (for its proximity to the ski centre), the village exudes a particular charm during the rest of the year. Its traditional tavernas, restaurants, and bars offer comforting local cuisine to the delight of tourists. One of the activities to be found there is hiking in the mountains surrounding the town. A 5.5km uphill walk from Arachova brings you to the Corycian Cave, and a section of the European E4 trail (one of the 12 European longdistance paths that start in Spain and end in Cyprus) runs from the cave to the archaeological site of Delphi. The Delphic landscape surrounds the hiking path. The view towards the Crissaean Gulf and beyond to the Peloponnese mountain peaks will be imprinted in your memory forever.

METEORA

The distance from Athens to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Meteora is about 360km. The destination is the location of the hanging monasteries with breathtaking sunsets we can see all over the internet. The six existing monasteries are built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders that dominate the area. You can’t stay overnight in the monasteries; you have to book a hotel in Kalabaka or in the small village of Kastraki, which is closer to Meteora. However, during the day, the monasteries are open for visitation (please refer to Covid-19 rules before booking your trip). And you can visit more than one. Some are exclusive for men or women, and others accept both visitors. Don’t forget that appropriate clothing for everyone is required to enter the monastery premises. Sleeveless tops and T-shirts are prohibited, and all shorts and skirts must be below the knee; rules are for both men and women. Meteora is a unique area full of impressive and massive rock formations that were shaped millions of years ago. Over the years, the rocks have been changed by the actions of wind, rain and all the natural phenomena in the region. The area surrounding the monastries is the perfect landscape to hike along the pre-determined paths for an outdoor adventure.

W

ith organic and fresh ingredients farmed and consumed every day, Chef Susy Massetti has just recently opened up her very own restaurant, L’Orto, which is located in Adliya Block 338. Introducing one of the very first ‘farm-to-table’ concepts in the city, this eatery redefines Italian cuisine from all that we know, into something that is far more satisfying and nourishing. Upon entering L’Orto, your soul immediately transports elsewhere with the ambience they have put in place. Giving the entire restaurant a dreamy, rustic aura, guests are welcomed and ushered through, leaving time for them to soak in all the incredible pieces of art displayed throughout the place. With fruit- and vegetable-faced portraits hanging on the walls, L’Orto pays homage to Renaissance painters, culture and tradition, with hand-picked items that all work side by side to make you feel like you’re in Italy. Known for her incredible dishes and organic farming, we were lucky enough to be greeted personally by Chef Susy, who lightly spoke to us about the special creations we were going to experience, and how her main drive continues to be about nourishing the human spirit. One thing I learnt about Italian food whilst at L’Orto, is that it is never only food – there are stories, memories, feelings and excitement that all go into the dishes prepared. Bringing a little taste of Tuscany right to our table, Chef Susy spoke about the significance of the dishes to her, the memories and sentiment that comes with working on them, as well as the beauty of the entire preparation process.

“One thing I learnt about Italian food whilst at L’Orto, is that it is never only food – there are stories, memories, feelings and excitement that all go into the dishes prepared.”

Going into the procedure of the way things are done at L’Orto, the restaurant currently presents guests with ‘Il menu di oggi’, which is the daily changing menu that is put together and prepared by the staff every single day. Some of the dishes on this menu are rotating, but it takes quite some time before you’ll ever come across them again – now that made us feel special! Alongside the ever-changing daily menu, L’Orto also has I Piatti Amati and I Piatti Toscani Di Tradizione – these are apart from the permanent menu that stays available all week long and is composed of the Most Loved and Traditional Tuscan Dishes that are prepared by the chefs. As we got acquainted with the restaurant and prepared ourselves for what was to come, we were presented with our first round from the Most Loved Menu – the La Burrata with fresh Tuscan black truffles was rich in flavour and perfectly paired with the La Pizza Bianca ai Funghi. Both of these had us floating in truffle heaven and we were not ready to come down. Realising that the surprises of this night were never-ending, we delved head-first into the exclusive menu, and were taken aback by every single dish – there was absolutely no room for competition as everything was worthy of an award. The caramelised fig salad and tuna tartare were exquisite in taste and presentation – the techniques used to create the dishes helped us realise how the purity of the ingredients played a massive role in amazing our taste buds with every bite. You can trust us that no plate was left unattended and that not a single mouthful was left behind. Already extremely satisfied with the starters – the portions are somewhat close to perfect – we cooled down and prepared for the main courses. Now, these were the real show stoppers!

CHIC Eats Out came the Coda Alla Vaccinara, Sunchoke and Leeks Risotto, Beef Cheeks and the European Seabass Fillet. All these dishes were perfectly prepared and presented, alongside the chefs who spent time explaining to us what each dish consisted of, how it was prepared and all the organic ingredients that were used (directly from Susy’s farm and onto our table). Each one of these dishes left us all delighted, not only were we highly impressed by the quality of the food, but the organicness of it all worked directly to nourish our spirits and stomachs! If you ever there and come across these platters on the menu, do not hesitate whatsoever! Ending it all on a sweet note, the chefs surprised our palates with their Il Cheesecake ai Datter, a cheesecake made with dates, and the Lemona Trinj Tart – we’ll be going back for those soon!

“Volvo have included just about every safety feature known to humankind in the 2021 XC60, ensuring that you and your loved ones travel in one of the safest cars ever designed.”

V

olvo has created a prestigious reputation for itself, earned through the continuous delivery of well-designed motor vehicles. These creations have been fully equipped with almost unrivalled safety features and have always offered good value for money. The Swedish-based manufacturer entered into the SUV market over a decade ago and they have been regarded as top competitors in the mid-sized premium SUV segment ever since. We at OHLALA have had the privilege of test-driving various Volvo models over the years and, thanks to the fantastic team at Motor City, this month we got to experience the new 2021 Volvo XC60 T8. The exterior of the 2021 XC60 is reminiscent of previous models

showcasing the timeless elegance of the design. The overall appearance is very stylish and the subtle lines of the vehicle flow effortlessly from bonnet to boot. At the front end, the handsome, chrome accented grille is complemented by the LED Thor Headlights, whilst a brushed stainless steel skid plate adds to the car’s robust look. At the sides, a stylish running board enhances the SUV’s powerful appearance, a well-integrated standing board assists with the entering and exiting of the vehicle and the optional 22-inch, 5-double spoke, matte black, diamond cut alloy wheels hint at its performance capabilities. The visual appeal of the back end is greatly enhanced by the brushed stainless steel skid plate and rear bumper, complete with fully integrated double tailpipes. www.ohlala-magazine.com

DIVA Drives Upon entering the SUV, we were greeted by fine Nappa leather front seating, that was both supportive and comfortable. The seats are multiadjustable and offer a commanding view of the road. The minimalistic sense of style is a great example of Scandinavian design with everything well positioned and beautifully crafted. The material finishes add a classy touch whilst the little details, such as the tiny Swedish flag integrated into the dashboard, show the love and attention put into the construction of the interior. We found the standard touchscreen very easy to navigate and were generally pleased with the overall design of the infotainment system. Moving into the back, the rear seating offers plenty of space for three adults, with loads of head and leg room for all onboard. The boot has a capacity of 468 litres, an area significantly increased with the rear seats folded down. Performance-wise, the 2021 XC60 T8 is a Recharge Plug-in Hybrid that houses both a 2-litre turbocharged, supercharged engine as well as an 87ps electric motor. These engines combined offer 407ps and believe us when we tell you that this 4x4 can move! Accompanying all of this power is surprisingly agile handling for a vehicle of this size, excellent suspension and a more than capable braking system. With five different drive modes to choose from, including Pure Mode, Hybrid, Individual, Power and OffRoad, this car is ready to take on any and all conditions. We can honestly say that this Volvo was exceptional fun to drive and we always felt in complete control.

When putting the car in Pure Mode, power is supplied by the electric motor from the 11.6kWh lithium-ion battery, allowing for short journeys up to around 50 kilometres to be fuel-free affairs. To charge the battery, you merely need to insert the standard cable into the socket located on the front wing of the exterior, however, purchasing a type-two cable will reduce full charging time to just three hours. It is possible to charge the electric engine whilst on the move by forcing energy into the battery, but this does place extra strain on the petrol engine leading to higher fuel consumption. A surprising element of the electric experience was just how quiet the XC60 is in this mode. Once we turned on the engine, we had to turn it off and on again, just to make sure that it was actually running. Safety-wise, Volvo have included just about every safety feature known to humankind in the 2021 XC60, ensuring that you and your loved ones travel in one of the safest cars ever designed.

MISS Ohlala

INNER PEACE IT’S A SELF-REFLECTIVE TIME, BRING A REVOLUTION TO YOUR HEART AND RESTORE YOUR INTERACTION WITH THE WORLD FOR A MONTH OF PURE HARMONY. The month of Ramadan is known for its spiritual purpose; even if you are not Muslim, you can use this period to slow down and connect to your true self. The one you might not have been paying much attention to lately. Daily chores, busy schedules and the challenges in our lifestyles due to the pandemic can be overwhelming. Stop and listen. Listen to your body asking for the proper nourishment and organise the noise in your mind. Put your best thoughts where you can easily access them for when you have darker days. And don’t forget to breathe. Embody this moment of reflection, revelation, revolution, and restoration to find the balance between you and the world surrounding you. It can happen through making notes to reflect more on your daily life or paying more attention to the details and the people around you ̶ your neighbours, or even just your car cleaner. For non-Muslims, you can give fasting a try (at least for a few days) to better understand your body and expel the toxins that have been piling up and disturbing your sleep and energy levels. A detoxing month can be good for your physical health and bring clarity to your cloudy mind. Connect with yourself and loved ones emotionally, and remember to practise generosity. Sending good vibes into the world will bring good to you, and best of all, it is free.
