EDITOR’S LETTER The holidays have snuck up on us again, and now we find ourselves right in the middle of party season. Time flies when you’re having fun, huh? Like charity, the festive period starts at home. For all the Insta-quotes online, there is one that resonates with me – don’t just buy presents, be present. Partly because you can be so busy getting the roast potatoes perfect that you miss out the fun of dinner itself. Especially because in this day-and-age, with everyone attached to their smartphones, it can be a struggle to get anyone to listen. So, what I’d really like, is just a day where everyone is fully present. As 2017 draws to a close, and 2018 looms around the corner, take a moment to reflect on what you can do to bring a smile to someone else each day. We’re surrounded by too much negativity, stress and pressure. Let’s not let that define and mould us when we can be so much better and make things so much better for others around us. Finally, and most importantly, bring on the sparkle and shine, dress to impress, put on your party shoes and unleash the party animal in you. And when you are busy making the heads turn by putting on your best look, don’t forget to flaunt the right attitude and flash your best smile. Happy Holidays!

It’s that time of year again and as the festive season rolls round late nights coupled with over indulging become a common theme and instead of looking rested and perky all that fun starts to take its toll on our bodies and skin. Angela Beitz shares her best beauty tips for surviving the next month

MAKE FRIENDS WITH H2O

During the day of and during your event drink lots of water to restore all of your fluids. It also helps to limit your intake of salt which will add to your dehydration and in some cases can lead to swelling. Hydrating yourself with help you feel better but will also get your skin glowing and your complexion will thank you for it the next day.

PERFECT YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN

This is probably one of the most important things you can do for your skin. It can be the last thing you feel like doing after a long night out but make every effort to remove your festive make-up before you go to sleep. Leaving eye make-up on your skin might cause it to darken as the deeper pigments can penetrate your skin. . If you do fall asleep with your make-up on, make sure you do a proper job of cleansing your skin the next morning including exfoliation and a hydrating mask to help your skin recover from being mistreated.

MASTER YOUR ROUTINE

Decide on your make up and hair looks prior to your events to save time. If doing your own make-up and hair isn’t your thing that outsourcing it is your best option. Some salons offer both hair and make-up services and we love the ones that will come to your home that will save you time and stress trying to find a park or getting stuck in traffic. Gel nails are also a good option for party season (opt for a colour that will suit any outfit).

INVEST IN FACE MASKS

There is never a better time to use face masks then party season. They will help to plump and hydrate your skin before an event and help to sooth and heal your skin post event. Sheet masks are becoming increasingly popular and we love the ones with Hyaluronic Acid to really recharge and plump your skin. Pop one in the fridge the night before an event to use the next morning - you’ll love the cooling effect and it will help those pesky puffy eyes.

EXFOLIATE

Those late nights and lots of make- up will really start to take its toll on our complexion so ensure you ramp up on the exfoliating. This includes full body scrubs and exfoliating mask for your face. and follow it up with lots of moisture. It help your products to settle into your skin better and make your make-up glow.

USE CLEVER PRODUCTS

Make up wipes, illuminating concealer, longwear foundation, dry shampoo and anything hydrating and glowing are your best friends for party season. 48

Book all your pampering appointments in now. Being orgnaisined is so important and will save you from lots of stress and give you more time for partying. Time slots fill up super quickly towards the end of the year so book all your hair appointments, mani/pedis, spray tans and blow-dries no. It pays to book now right up until New Years.

EMBRACE THE SMOKY EYE

I love bright and bold lipsticks but you don’t want to spend half the night in the bathroom reapplying your lippy when you could be enjoying the party. A smoky eye is also the perfect way to transform your daytime look into an evening one by simply applying darker and shimmery toned eyeshadows with a slick of eyeliner.

Mediterranean hospitality we reached the hotel at night, and despite the darkness, we sensed the beauty of the city touching our hearts, through the sounds of the waves breaking the bustling noise of the sleepless streets. We pierced through the prestigious doors to the classy lobby to be welcomed with the colours of beige and cream, as they spread a calm and graceful vibe that matched perfectly with the golden frames that adorned the huge paintings scattered on every wall. A swift check-in accompanied by a warm greeting from the welcoming lady at the front desk and then we were escorted up to our room with the attentive concierge. This exemplary property comprises 118 luxury rooms including 31 suites. Great amenities, exceptional comfort, and outstanding service... qualities that can only be described as a Four Seasons standard. I was so happy when we entered the room because of the powerful presence of yellow since it is my favourite colour and the added bonus that everything is meticulously in place made for the idyllic ambience. One comfy lazy chair with foot-rest, TV, internet, mini bar and thoughtful amenities. The bathroom is quite large and well equipped with the luxury L’Occitane bath products. A back a douche, a bath tub, and a closed toilet area. In a floor dedicated to the gastric art, you find most of the ten food destinations offered by the hotel. At “Kala” the main restaurant that holds a Greek name means “good”, the atmosphere is extra fresh with bamboo and white wood furnishing and white and blue fabric that extends to the curtains, to blend so artistically with the large window overlooking the gorgeous private beach. We regret not having enough time to visit the Lebanese restaurant ‘Byblos’, but, we definitely enjoyed an intimate night at Stefano’s the Italian restaurant offering southern Italian cuisine with seafood specialty. The restaurant is basically a cozy circle centered with a huge pole and

decorated so simply with four large vases recessed in the walls all around. If you are a dedicated or passionate swimmer, the icy cold days will not stop you from visiting the indoor heated swimming pool that lays under a glass dome that let in the warm rays of the shy winter sun. The beautiful private sandy beach is only open in summer so we were lucky enough to visit during this season where we were welcomed alongside other hotel guests where you can easily access the crystal Mediterranean waters right opposite the hotel through a beautifully designed underpass. And you need to go no further than Fish Restaurant and Lounge to enjoy delicious food and exquisite drinks without having to go back to the hotel floor. Shisha smokers have the share of options inside the hotel as many outlets offer shisha such as Bleu Terrace, Fresca Cafe and shisha lounge. Join in on the fun and spend a day in the privacy of a spacious beach cabana, right on the shores of the Mediterranean. T O C R E AT E Nicole Bischofer, Head of Womenswear Design at COS shares the visionary behind their AW17 collection How did you come to realise that fashion was your calling? I could not find what I was looking for in the shops and so began making my own garments to fill the gap of the pieces I could not buy. My mother would help me with the pattern cutting, she would work free hand and this is how I began. Later my interest in design progressed and I went on to join pattern cutting courses, this lead to a tailoring course followed later by fashion studies. What’s your process when you come up with new ideas for COS? We create seasonal directions together as a team. We take time to research Art, Architecture, Design and Lifestyle, creating a ‘world’ where the ideas are conceptualised. Together with the designers we try to make this world come alive, interpreted as new shapes, fabrics, details. Do you have any part in the making of the clothes or do you leave it to your team to do it? I have a very good relationship with the team. We take time to discuss and plan each collection. Once we have a final idea in mind and we all understand the inspiration and what we expect from the pieces, the team proceeds with designs, keeping me in the loop at all times. Your womenswear collection caters for the modern woman. In short, what defines a woman in the Middle East? Individual Culturally aware Sophisticated 54

The AW17 collection explores new proportions and soft tailoring. How do you want women to feel when they wear them? We hope the collection makes women feel elegant, confident and stylish whilst being functional and working with their lifestyle. Pieces should feel modern and easy to wear, for moving from one occasion to the next. What influenced the direction of this collection? We looked a lot at architecture and especially an Austrian fire station which had these beautiful shades of red and used a new type of concrete material that is very light. This influenced our choice of material as well as parts of our colour palette. We also looked at geometry within art and that led to geometric drapes and outlines in the silhouettes. What’s your favourite, go-to item from the collection and why? One of my favourite pieces is a reinvented black poplin shirt with a polo neck collar. it’s a piece which I will continue to wear through the seasons. What pressures do you face being the Head of Womenswear Design at COS? I take each day as it comes, every day is different. We work hard to make sure that we are staying true to our brand philosophy whist giving the customer what they want. Each season we will work to find new ways to reinvent classic pieces and offer exciting new fabrics and style.

The GCC is home to some exquisite and eclectic fashion. Which other part of the world do you think has great statement fashion? Many places in the world have great statement fashion and we are continuing to learn from different areas. We have a strong connection with Asian countries such as Japan when it comes to a more minimal, timeless design style however we search everywhere for inspiration. What can we look forward to with future collections? As I previously touched on, we take inspiration from Art and Design and our research helps us to decide on new colour palettes and directions. In the future, we will continue to design with Innovative drapes and will always search for interesting fabrications to mix with and reinvent our timeless staple pieces. You’ve lived in Bahrain since 2009. What are your impressions of the island? Bahrain has been a very good place for me and my family to settle. It is definitely our home-away-from-home! It is very family orientated and people are extremely friendly. How did you get into the hospitality industry? It is a long story, but, to cut it short, it is probably my destiny! I am an accountant by profession, but, I love meeting people and interacting, so, that’s probably why I’ve ended up doing what I love to do in my current role. I think most expatriates would agree to that. What would you say best describes the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel’s experience that guests can expect? A Bahraini hospitality with a touch of history on it. What kind of challenges have you faced so far? Marketing is a big world with all the digital updates and new trends. I think the biggest challenge is to know it all and ensure that you’re updated, but at some point it all goes to one equation in the hospitality industry, take care of your employees and guests then everything else will be okay. SYMPHONY OF SERENITY Imagine laying on a massage table, letting your stress and anxieties melt away as your muscles are therapeutically manipulated with comfortably hot stones. Dessange is the perfect anecdote for all your relaxation requirements, after all, we all deserve it.

I am a firm believer that massages are a necessity in life. I don’t get them as often as I would like, so I made a point to schedule a massage in after a stressful week, and, of course, I needed to book with Dessange. I was warmly greeted upon arrival and instantly taken to the tastefully decorated changing area where I could exchange my clothes for a cosy robe. While waiting for my therapist, I was kindly offered some water and filled out my pre-consultation form. As soon as I opened the door to the spa, I felt a sigh of relief as I knew it was all about pampering from this moment on. This was my first hot stone massage and I was a little hesitant because I prefer deep tissue massages over relaxing ones and I wasn’t sure which one to expect. It turns out this massage is a little of both. My knowledgable Balinese therapist, Keitut has been resident at Dessange for fourteen years, and her expertise is evident as she explained the process of the Elemis Aroma Stone Massage to allow for optimum results and a greater understanding. The Thermodynamic basalt stones are massaged over the body as the therapeutic heat releases slowly into the belly of the muscle for a complete new body experience and maximum relaxation. Whilst the stones are placed on key energy points, you are able to unwind as signature massage techniques are combined with luxuriously warmed oils to deeply relax and rebalance the mind and body. Now, you may be cautious of the heat-factor, but, alas, no need to fret as the hot basalt stones are heated to 38-40c to match our body temperature. The oil is chosen based upon the client’s preference, this can be from anything from a concern surrounding cellulite to aching muscles. After our discussion I was advised to use Elemis Musclease Active Body Oil due to the built-up tension that my lifestyle inevitably causes. One of the first things the therapist did was strategically place warm stones on my back while I lay facing up on the table. Once I was comfortable, she began the massage at my neck and worked her way down. Each body 64

part was first warmed up with the hot stones and then finished off with a nice deep tissue massage. Prior to the stones being placed, I was body-brushed from head-to-toe. Brushing is very important as it stimulates blood and your lymphatic system - the added luxury of this brush is that it’s bristles derive from a cactus tree, and no, there is no nasty spines to catch you off-guard. It is important to add that everything is sanitised with Tea-Tree SOS Spray beforehand due to its antiseptic properties. Afterwards, I was offered some delicious ginger tea (my favourite) in their calming relaxation room and I could have easily fallen asleep on their comfortable loungers. Trust me this deliciously melted away all my body tension. Hot stone massage performed by a certified therapist can help relax the body’s muscles and soft tissues, alleviate pain, improve circulation and help rid the body of toxins. This type of massage treatment can also reduce stress, promote calmness and increase relaxation. Many hot stone massage enthusiasts even claim they experience a sense of enlightenment, inner peace and renewed spirituality after a hot stone massage session. Dessange offers a wide range of services and treatments, from haircuts and colouring to a variety of beauty salon services. A fitness center allows patrons to work off the extra pounds earned in the lead up to the festive period and they even have their own private spa area that I came to take full advantage of. Not everyone is convinced of the benefits of stone massage therapy, but it has been used by ancient cultures around the world for centuries. DIAMOND IN THE KITCHEN La Vinoteca Barcelona has had a makeover and we are officially in love with their recent renovation, alongside their unique culinary and oenological experience that they have introduced to the Kingdom. Nestled on the outer-edge of Block 338 lies the recently refurbished La Vinoteca Barcelona, waiting to showcase its sleek new look prior to the official opening that will be held on 6th December. I must say when we were exclusively invited prior to this date I let out a genuine squeal of excitement, La Vinoteca Barcelona is part of Bayader which hosts other luxurious brands under its belt such as Alto, Cafe Amsterdam and Delilah’s. This restaurant is already acclaimed, yet, as any strong woman will tell you, constructive criticism is key to evolving. This is where renowned architect George Karam has clearly worked his magic alongside the Torres brand, to come up with their new concept ready for the festive season and we are extremely grateful. As we walked into the premises we were greeted by a contemporary setting of earthy embellishments that draw you into the atmospheric blend of mediterranean undertones. The bar is showcases a more industrialised vibe with an option of eating at the bar, however, this only heightens the unassuming guests eating preference with no sign of pretentiousness in the air. There are royal blue wooden slats that adorn the ceiling overhead and grand wooden booths, that play homage to the barrels that wine is aged in, where you can enjoy a level of intimacy that is unparalleled in such a location.

He orchestrates a sensory journey encompassing local ingredients, unique flavours and contemporary techniques, whilst still remaining true to their traditional origins and this is paramount throughout all of their dishes. Gomez’s passion for all things food is utterly infectious and it’s a pleasure to be in his company. We were on tenterhooks as we listened to his roadmap of culinary creations and understandably we were mindlessly salivating, eager to explore the exemplary presented food. Celebrating their partnership with Bodegas Torres, their beverage menu features a large range of the finest Torres wines including a pocket-friendly range of “wine flights”, perfect for those who wish to sample different grapes to accompany your dishes. We had the privilege of our knowledgeable venezuelan host providing us with an informative drinking overview, which proved to be extremely interesting. The overall experience allowed our tastebuds to welcome the acceleration of flavours and provide a further appreciation of the recipes before us. Straight from the kitchen we were presented with freshly baked bread that came with a trio of sauces, including my personal favourite romesco sauce, consisting of a blend of roasted pepper, garlic,roasted tomato and bread crumbs.

Our journey commenced with a selection of cold starters, the Manchego and Cegina Pillows were a welcome start! These nuggets of happiness came in the form of bread pockets stuffed with manchego cheese and wrapped in smoked Spanish cured beef cecina. The presentation on this particular dish was one of cute, but, oh-so-kitsch design, perfect for that instagram upload. Trust me, you will find it hard to narrow down your snapshots on account of the impeccable presentation of each dish that leaves the kitchen, which is nothing short of impressive in this particular day-and-age. The House Smoked Salmon was thinly sliced and came with an accompaniment of pickles, red onion and homemade red fruits caviar, whereas, the Octopus Terrine pleasantly surprised everyone at the table with its melt-inyour-mouth properties leaving a subtle taste of Spanish paprika behind. My partner isn’t usually a big fan of seafood, but, he lapped up all that was put in front of us making audible sounds of appreciation along the way. My new craving in life, without a shadow of a doubt, is the phenomenal vermicelli paella called fideuá that was infused with wild mushrooms and green asparagus. This crowd pleasing favourite showcases the flavours of the raw and fresh haute-cuisine ingredient that is truffle, flown in from Alba, Italy. A little fact that Joan Gomez shared with us is that truffle is a kind of mushroom that grows at approximately half a meter under the surface and is found by dogs specifically trained to do so - one of the main reasons that the price is so high, apart from its unique flavour of course! The resounding agreement of it’s grandeur taste was evident from the swift timeframe it took to demolish such beauty. For all you chocoholics I admonish you to soak up the gooeyness of their multi-layered dessert laced with toffee sauce and orange jelly, the Chocolate Hazelnut Indulgence will not disappoint. he brand has always been synonymous with prestige and class, however, the designers at Lexus have decided to step out of their comfort zone to produce a new age offering, sure to have a major impact on the luxury sedan segment. The new Lexus LS is the company’s flagship vehicle and is the most luxurious sedan they have created thus far. Set to rival other beautiful mechanical creations such as the MercedesBenz S-Class, the Audi A8 and the BMW 7 Series, this car has been designed to impress on all levels of both appearance and performance. Approaching the vehicle it was immediately obvious we were dealing with a new type of animal. It is noticeably longer and lower than its predecessor and unashamedly displays its new aggressive design. The corporate spindle grille dominates the front end of the vehicle with the mesh detail providing a truly unique finish. The ‘L-shaped’ LED headlights are a novel feature, showcasing the designers’ attention to detail. The sleek shape of the body

is obvious from the sides, with smooth lines connecting the front to the rear. The roofline tapers towards the boot adding to the streamlined shape. The rear boasts an updated taillight design, with ‘L-Shaped’ sections to the inside portion of the lights. The dual exhausts finished off an impressive start to our day with the LS. To enter the vehicle, one merely has to touch the handle and the door unlocks. Slipping inside the LS, one immediately feels as if they have been upgraded to first class. The entire cabin has been constructed with a high level of craftsmanship and only the very best of materials have been used. The leather seating is extremely comfortable and the fact the driver’s seat raises up to give one a better driving position does not go unnoticed. The layout is similar to the Mercedes S-Class and let’s face it, if you are going to emulate a luxury interior, the S-Class is probably the way to go. Touch control system. This intuitive operation is designed to mirror the way a smartphone is used, also recognising ‘handwritten’ commands – outline letters traced using a finger on the touchpad. In addition to the 12.3” navigation display, the LS can be fitted with an optional 24” colour head-up display. This projects a variety of key vehicle information and performance data into the driver’s forward line of vision on the windscreen. An inspection of the back of the car revealed loads of leg and headroom, ensuring a comfortable ride for all passengers. Driving a Lexus, one expects a high-level of performance, however, even us seasoned test drivers were pleasantly surprised by what was on offer under the hood. We could immediately feel the power made available by the 3.5 litre V6 engine. Producing 311 hp and 380 Nm of torque, we always had plenty of muscle in reserve. One cannot help but feel superior when driving this vehicle and we received more than our fair share of admiring glances on our journey. The handling and breaks are more than a match for the size of the engine and the quality 19” tires make sure one always feels in complete control. A feature we are sure will prove to be popular in the region is the Lexus Climate Concierge. It is capable of intelligent automatic control by detecting the body temperatures of vehicle occupants. The new LS features infrared sensors that measure body surface temperatures in the front seats, to provide the most comfortable interior climate conditions for each vehicle occupant. The new LS employs the latest safety technologies including the brand’s innovative Lexus Safety System+, in addition to a comprehensive array of safety features to protect its occupants, such as 14 SRS airbags, Blind Spot Monitor, Vehicle Stability Control, Panoramic View Monitor, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, and Brake Assist, among many others. You can be assured your family’s safety has been considered in this design. Handing the keys back to Ebrahim K. Kanoo, we felt we had just experienced a new age in Lexus design and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next. 92

A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT. Nothing lifts your spirit like cocktails and tapas with your best girl friends. As the old saying goes, “a problem shared is a problem halved”.

A NEW HAIRCUT. I recently took the plunge and lopped off my tired locks into a “LOB” (or long bob). I instantly felt lighter, younger and reinvigorated. Check out some red carpet styles for inspiration. Emma Stone and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley both know how to carry off beautiful shoulder-length styles. Add a red lip and you are all set.

MOROCCAN HAMAM. Nothing feels better than smooth skin after a Moroccan Hamam and body scrub. Enough said.

NEW SHOES! It is hard to beat retail therapy. I never recommend buying on credit, but saving up for a designer bag or shoes gives me great pleasure. Forget Kit-Kats, Net-aPorter coffee breaks are the best.

SEND A LETTER OR A GIFT. Put your mobile devices down for a while and pick up a pen. There’s nothing I like more than to receive a card or parcel. So think of some faraway friends who might need a pick-me-up and send them a surprise card or a parcel. Perhaps your favourite book, a lipstick or some stationary. There’s nothing that beats the act of giving to put a smile on your face.

REPURPOSE JEWELLERY. Some of us are lucky enough to inherit a brooch or ring from a granny or great aunt that is very special to us, but, it’s not in a modern style that we would ordinarily wear. It seems a shame for such sentimental items to sit in a drawer indefinitely, so consider taking them to a jeweller to give them a new lease of life. Have the stones from a ring reset into a pendant for example.

“MANI PEDI”. There is nothing more depressing than untidy nails. Luckily having a regular manicure-pedicure is considered the norm here and there are a plethora of salons to choose from.

GIVE TO CHARITY. Make a donation to a charity that you support. Alternatively one of the most personal gifts you can give is to invite someone into your home to share a festive dinner. Identify someone who would otherwise be alone over the festive season, and invite them to be part of your family.
