Editor’s Letter

And in the blink of an eye, 2022 is ending. After the pandemic, we were eager for a 'normal' year, and I guess 2022 was a pretty good one, with the world returning to normality. So we must celebrate! We bring an array of party-ready looks, beauty and Christmas and New Year's dining offers to end the year in grand style. The biggest event dedicated to jewels and watches in Bahrain, Jewellery Arabia, happened at the end of last month. It celebrated 30 years of luxury and left us in a state of awe with the beautiful collections presented. We bring some of the most incredible ones to share with you. We also enjoyed not one but two beauty reviews. We headed to Heavenly Spa by Westin at The Westin City Centre Bahrain for their sugar scrub and Aspire signature massage, and we were treated to a holidaythemed manicure and party hairstyle at Dessange Paris Bahrain. These are fantastic treatments and a great way to start the New Year feeling pretty and relaxed.

Inspired by the shimmering accents that the holiday season brings, we guide you on adding golden elements to your home décor. And if you plan to go away this winter, we explore the uniqueness that Japan has to offer.

We had a memorable culinary experience at La Table Krug by Y at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain and bring all the details to you. An evening where we discovered delectable flavours and had discussions about art and food in the company of the iconic Chef Yann Bernard Lejard. In our last test drive of the year, we got behind the wheel of the new Infiniti QX60. We can only say that we close the year with a golden key!

The passion for technical innovation and contemporary design has united these two brands, Zenith, a Swiss watch manufacturer since 1865, and Fusalp, a French luxury ski and readyto-wear brand, to create the FUSALP X ZENITH collection. The two labels explore their shared historical know-how and legacy of innovation to create a collection of watches and apparel to take on the winter season in style. Limited to 300 pieces in a black ceramic case and 100 in white ceramic, the DEFY Classic Skeleton Fusalp features a new open dial. Zenith worked with Fusalp to develop this dial that combines the two universes of the brands by retaining the signature five-pointed star of the watch brand while incorporating a snowflake into its design. “This is an exciting new kind of partnership for Zenith and one that is very close to our hearts. More than just a fashion house, Fusalp are innovators. Their never-ending quest to produce highly technical yet fashionable clothing is something that Zenith relates to,” said Julien Tornare, Zenith CEO.

Inseparable Duo

Well-known for their footwear, Malone Souliers are launching a handbag collection for the first time. The Holiday Bags Collection marks their venture in the field of carriers. A natural progression for the brand as shoes and bags are made for each other. The designs translate the brand’s love for traditional crafting and innovative creations into a new medium; they echo the shoes’ inspirations but always with the product purpose in mind. The House of Meraki x Gemfields J’aime Collection is a partnership between Gemfields, a world-leading miner of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones, and House of Meraki, an emerald-focused fine jewellery brand. Featuring a carefully curated selection of responsibly sourced emeralds from Gemfields’ Kagem mine in Zambia, these exquisite creations have all been handmade in House of Meraki’s London atelier. J’aime translates as ‘I love’ or ‘may God protect’. Emeralds are associated with hope, growth, life, fertility and peace and are thought to possess healing properties. The collection features earrings – from dainty studs to stylish hoops – as well as rings, bracelets, necklaces and pendants. They pair delicate emeralds with 18-carat yellow gold, diamonds and pearls. No matter the cut, round or pear, the emeralds dominate each piece, their many facets representing the dimensions of a woman’s personality.

Garden Meets Art

The handbag brand Moynat Paris partnered with artist Mark Hearld to create a festive collection: Le Jardin Anglais. Mark is a prolific artist/designer from York, in the UK, who creates imaginative and unconventional works influenced by the flora and fauna of the British countryside. Inspired by the natural world, Mark’s paper-cut designs are enlivened in exquisite leather in this special collaboration using Maison Moynat’s leather marquetry technique. This crafting method requires precision from the artisans that connect individual leather pieces to form a seamless motif. The jigsaw elements used are a sustainable way for Moynat to reuse the high-quality surplus materials from previous collections. The result is a visually appealing collection with an environment-friendly purpose. Established as a trunk maker in 1849, Moynat is a Parisian label with unique imagination and skilled artisans. This new Happy Diamonds Joaillerie piece abandons the traditional bezel setting for a very precious crown alternative, embracing a more generous gem size. Diamonds sculpt a majestic heart pendant in ethical 18-carat white gold and the precious stones are selected with care by limiting the setting prongs’ visibility and guaranteeing maximum light exposure. The heart further encases seven dancing diamonds – the ultimate Chopard signature, symbolising the freedom of women who are continuously capable of reinventing their trajectory. The pendant is held around the neck by a double chain, also in ethical 18-carat white gold and enhanced with diamonds. Chopard is one of the few jewellers to craft its own chains based on expertise perpetuated over generations within its manufacture.

LITTLE CONSTELLATIONS

These Happy Diamonds Planet pieces reinterpret Chopard’s lucky dancing diamonds with a new family of bracelets in ethical gold adorned with natural stones. The tips of these bangles stage a pas de deux between a dancing diamond and a colourful bead – green agate, blue lapis lazuli, black onyx, pink rhodochrosite or diamonds – whose spherical shape inspires the name of the collection. The palette of colours offers infinite combinations in which you can wear the jewels. Chopard have been using 100% ethical gold to produce all their jewellery and watches since 2018.

MR BLUE SKY

Three new Happy Sport watches featuring a modern look suggest a more relaxed way of wearing diamonds, suitable for everyday life. The first model, in steel with a 30mm diameter, is adorned with a dial whose skyblue hue serves as a backdrop to the whirl of three dancing diamonds. The two other timepieces, with their larger 36mm diameters, combine stainless steel with details in ethical 18-carat rose gold, while their dials and leather straps are attired in different shades of blue. One has five twirling diamonds and the other seven, in addition to a textured motherof-pearl dial with a blue gradient.

The second opus of Messika Paris’ Beyond The Light collection channels radiance and power. The creations were presented in a runway show during Paris Fashion Week.

Characteristic of Messika Paris’ Beyond The Light collection, the new pieces continue to explore the fascinating, mysterious world of ancient Egypt. Messika’s iconic Move Uno pattern is depicted through the Imperial Move ensemble – necklace, bracelet and finger rings – in the colours of the Nile river. The Kandake line brings a graphic motif expressing the brand’s connection to the fashion world. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The festive spirit calls for out-there trends: glittery make-up, voluminous hair, bold colours and fancy accessories. If that doesn’t sound like you, don’t worry. There is a wide range of AW 2022/2023 trends that are subtle and yet make a statement, from au naturel looks to muted, frosted highlights.

SUPPLE SKIN

Not everyone is blessed with alabaster skin. The trick, however, is to use the right products. Glowy, natural-looking skin is a major trend this season. You can add some shine in keeping with the festive vibe and balance out a vibrant colour palette.

How to get the look?

Invest in dewy highlighters and facial oils that lend your skin a moisturised look. Low-coverage foundations and tinted moisturises are your friends. Finish with cheek and lip tint for a nourishing effect.

ALL EYES ON YOU

Drastic eyeliners were the rage on the fashion runways. Throw conventional wings out the window and say hello to dramatic swishes and flicks right up to your crease or even on the lower lid. Want to level up, try coloured liners.

How to get the look?

Invest in felt-tip liners, which have a glistening finish, unlike eye pencils. Going for a pop of colour? Blue hues work better with cooler skin tones, while warmer complexions should opt for green shades. Stacking eye shadow on your lash line is another option.

How to get the look?

A lash curler is a long-term investment. Heating your curler with your dryer – not too much – will help you style them better. Falsies are also a great option. For those who like to dare, go a step ahead with glittery, decorative falsies and coloured mascara.

RED TINT

The classic red lip remains the holy grail of festive make-up, and rightly so. It’s versatile and works perfectly well with full-coverage and minimalistic looks.

How to get the look?

Gone are the days when siren red was the only option. Redefine the red lip by choosing a shade that suits your skin tone, such as maroon, berry-hued reds, burgundy and so on. Have fun with an ombre effect; use a lip liner to define the shape, shade the outer lip with a darker red and go lighter in the centre.

BEAUTIFY YOUR TRESSES

Braids, high ponytails, buns and beach waves are dominating this season. Hairstylist Tané Murray shares tips on how to make these trends more festive.

How to get the look?

“Transform your high ponytail by adding a black ribbon to cover the hair band. Use an iron to curl the ends in or, for a more adventurous look, flick them out. You could finish with a shine spray, ” says Tané.

When it comes to braiding, she adds: “Do a braid of your choice and add a small piece of silver hair jewellery down the centre of the braid on every section. This will give the effect of enhanced length.”

A favourite style during this time of the year is the up-do and here is her tip: “Have some fun with a messy or sleek bun by adding small sprinkles of hair glitter on the back at the base of your hair right before the bun starts. Don’t be shy to add some hair tinsel as well.”

Regarding colouring trends for the festive season, Tané says: “Toasted caramel, rich brunettes, buttery blonde, creamy copper and warm tones are hot this season.” She adds that frosting is the latest trend. It is different from traditional highlights, which are bolder and more noticeable. In the frosting technique, the colour of the highlight is not much lighter than the base shade.” We think the word frosting sounds quite festive too!

The stylist believes that less is more when it comes to hair accessories. “Add one accessory as a statement piece in festive season colours: green and red are already quite bold,” she says. She also recommends embellished headbands and gold and silver accessories.

A RELAXING ESCAPE

Enjoy a break during your shopping spree and visit Heavenly Spa by Westin. OHLALA’s editor went for a pampering session at this hidden gem and left feeling relaxed, with super softened skin.

When passing through City Centre Bahrain mall while running your errands, you might not imagine that inside The Westin City Centre Bahrain hotel, which you can easily access from the mall, lies a luxurious and sophisticated spa. A calm retreat in the middle of a bright, busy and loud shopping frenzy.

The Heavenly Spa by Westin is located on the third floor. To get there, you need to pass the yummy creations of Furn bakery on your left ( I had my eyes on the beautiful croissants) and head to the hotel reception but, before you get there, take the lift. As you step outside the elevator, the spa’s large and welcoming reception area is right in front of you. The colours mix natural tones with soothing blue and green accents. It was undoubtedly a delightful surprise to go from bright lights and an impersonal area to a modern and beautifully decorated space welcoming me into a peaceful realm.

I was greeted by the lovely Spa Manager, Jasmin. My treatments for the day were a sugar scrub and an Aspire massage. She explained the benefits of this type of scrub and that the massages are customised to each client’s needs (the therapists are experienced, well-trained and know a variety of techniques) and introduced me to Joy, my therapist. She even played with her name saying she would take me into the path of joy during my session – she was not wrong!

Joy led the way and we entered a camouflaged door that took us to a long corridor lit by lanterns on the floor, giving the ambience a feel of decompression. As we walked forward in this space, I felt as if the world outside had been left far, far away – the type of sensation that puts you in the right mood for a spa day. If the reception was a surprise, the facilities along the corridor were just as impressive. Joy left me in the big, well-lit changing room with a spacious locker filled with a robe, slippers and all the necessary amenities. The changing area has massive mirrors and waterfall faucets in tones of grey and white. It gives a sense of cleanliness with a contemporary touch.

After getting changed, I walked towards my therapy room, following Joy’s previous instructions, and passed through the wet area with a Jacuzzi pool and sauna. As I reached my room, I realised it was much bigger than I had expected (actually, the entire spa space is more extensive than I anticipated and is a hidden gem in this complex of buildings), with a shower area and a massage bed in the centre. We started with the sugar scrub. This ingredient is sweet and perfect for desserts but not so lovely when scrubbed into the skin; the smell is great, though. It is considered a mild exfoliator; maybe that’s why it is a popular ingredient in natural therapies. I guess Joy noticed it was my first time having this type of treatment, she enquired whether the pressure was fine, and I asked for gentler movements. I’ve experienced Hammam before, and a more delicate rub is always one of my requests. Maybe if I did them more often, as I actually should, my skin would get used to a more intense session.

Sugar scrubs help to remove dead skin and unclog pores. This deep cleaning technique produces rejuvenated and more radiant skin with its natural glow restored. Sugar also delivers a natural anti-ageing effect and if you exfoliate your skin from time to time, it will be better prepared to absorb your favourite moisturiser. I definitely need to do it more often!

After Joy scrubbed every inch of my entire body (apart from my face), she asked me to shower to remove the granules. I could feel that my skin was so much softer; it felt super smooth and nice to touch. It was time to be pampered with the massage part of my spa day. Heavenly Spa offers four different oils: Recovery, Serenity, Clarity and Vitality to be used in their massages. They are formulated to achieve what their names suggest. Joy chose Serenity for the whole body and Recovery in the critical parts, such as my back and shoulders. As mentioned previously, the therapists propose the ideal massage for each customer and mix and match techniques to best approach the client’s issues or desires. Joy mostly gave me a relaxing massage, but with her 15 years of experience, she noticed that my back and shoulders

needed extra attention. She then applied a different style of pressure and movements to these areas. She worked on my knots and stretched my limbs to help my muscles release the tension they had been carrying. I felt like a new woman. The experience reached an end, but I didn’t leave before having a pleasant ginger tea and cookies in the relaxation area.

The five-star hotel offers an elevated experience with all the services and dining spots available, but the spa, ah! A calming retreat where you least expect it – definitely worth checking out next time you visit the mall. You can treat your sore soles or ditch the shopping part completely and head straight to the spa. I reckon the latter is my favourite option!

FESTIVE BEAUTY

The celebration season is upon us and OHLALA’s editor was treated to party-ready hair and nails at Dessange Paris Bahrain in time to embrace the merry days ahead.

On my drive to Dessange, Lovely Day by Bill Withers started playing on my Spotify, giving me a wonderful sense of happiness. The weather was nice, the sunshine looked different (the sky seemed bluer) and I was heading to a place where pampering, smiles and a good vibe were waiting for me. Such a great start to a day!

As soon as I entered the reception area, the pleasant Dessange signature smell of lemongrass hit my nostrils, giving me a warm feeling, followed by receptionist Carmela’s big smile and friendly good morning. She checked my appointment and walked with me to the salon area. The light entering the room was just delightful. I like it when you are inside an enclosed place but still have the outside sunlight coming in.

As end-of-year celebrations are on the calendar this month, being pampered with a contemporary Christmas-themed manicure and fabulous hair sounded like a great idea. I love the concept of incorporating the holiday season into beauty and fashion; it makes the month even jollier. Winter is also around the corner and we tend to go out more and socialise with friends to enjoy the cool weather, so there is nothing better than sporting nice nails and bouncy hair for these occasions.

My first appointment was with hair specialist Joanne, who explained that every client undergoes a scalp and hair condition analysis before any blow-dry and haircut. She told me that I have an oily scalp and dry hair. The consultation is fundamental to detecting which products will work best for each hair type during the washing process. In my case, she opted for the PHYTODESS Terre Précieuse Malachite scalp mask. A product made with green clay, malachite and essential oils such as tea tree, red mandarin and petitgrain that helps balance and cleanse the scalp. To improve the results, she added a pump of PHYTODESS Shampooing Au Ginseng Violet, a purple ginseng shampoo, to cater for my bleached strands. She is a true alchemist! She sectioned my hair, applied the mixture to the roots and gave me a comprehensive head massage to improve the circulation in the area and help all the goodness penetrate my scalp. She left the product for about five minutes before rinsing it thoroughly with PHYTODESS Shampooing Au Thé Blanc (white tea shampoo) for radiance and protection and indicated for highlighted or colour-treated hair. She then finalised with PHYTODESS Tiger Nut Oil Mask for nutrition and control of unruly tresses like mine. Meanwhile, Rosalie, the nail technician, came to rescue my fingertips. Funnily enough, when I was leaving my car and heading to the reception, I broke a nail, so having a manicure that day was timely. She started by fixing my nails’ sizes, filing them into a proper shape and removing all the dead and dry skin. She exfoliated my hands with sea salt and lavender scrub to make them soft and remove dead skin cells. The hand massage was a highlight as she put pressure on sore points and alleviated some of the pain I had. It is, unfortunately, a writer’s problem, and I am no exception. It was time to give a final touch to my hair and Nur, the hairstylist, opted for a blow-dry and waves. The trend for the season is a more structured ripple, moving away from loose beachy waves. And if you have curtain bangs, the look will be spot on! My naturally curly hair doesn’t really allow me to have a fringe, but I looked fabulous and party-ready after she styled my locks, controlling the frizz with some spray.

While I waited for Pranita, the nail artist who was going to put the final coat on my nails, I moved to the café area. The charming space is conveniently positioned next to the health club on the villa’s top floor. It offers an array of drinks, from coffee to smoothies and healthy bites. Michele, the sweet lady in charge, promptly prepared a banana and berries smoothie for me. I drank the delicious thick liquid, which became my lunch, while catching up on some work emails. The December juice is the Snowflake Peppermint, a mix of Greek yoghurt, milk, peppermint, oats, chia seeds and vanilla protein. A festive smoothie packed with fibre, essential minerals and antioxidants. Pranita was ready for me, so I went back to the salon area, where the nail stations are located. I love nail art, but I am useless at doing it myself, so when I get my nails done by professionals, I like it to be extra special. The design the Dessange team picked was the cutest! A very soft pink base with red tips, a la French manicure, with a twist. On the ring finger of both hands, a delicate bow to resemble a gift was painted by Pranita – a feminine and daring detail. I absolutely loved it – holiday season, here we go!

I really wanted to leave Dessange and head straight to a Christmas party. However, it was just the middle of the day on a Tuesday, so I had to run to the office to work. But thanks, Dessange, for putting me in a joyous mood and letting me dream of Christmas.

While combining gold and black could be tricky and sometimes too dramatic, going for gold and white is easier and chic. Combine white with earthy tones and natural hues as the base for gold accents. The colour combo is great for those who love minimalism but want to add lively elements without shocking hues.

If you are looking for something grand to pair with gold, opt for green. This combination is quintessentially festive, which is great for the holiday season. According to Dunn-Edwards paints, the 2023 Colour of the Year is Terra Rosa. A deep dusty pink hue with a touch of terra-cotta influence. Combining gold and shades other than white and black can have an overwhelming result. According to architect Marilia La Marca, there’s a very thin line between what qualifies as chaotic and chic. So, it is important to be cautious, but she encourages it with a tip: “Don’t be scared and follow the rule of three, which is considered the perfect number in interior design. To find the right balance and harmony and to stay on the sophisticated, safe side, insert just three accents of gold in a coloured space.” The rule of three says that things arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable and effective than even-numbered groupings.

THE GOLDEN RULE

The Middle Eastern modern interior design brand, Aura Living, believes that: “In contemporary art, gold continues to convey a multitude of different meanings and holds the symbols of prosperity, fortune and status. A gold colour palette is often used in home décor and artistic installations. However, one has to be very attentive and meticulous when incorporating this shade into their home interior. As much as it can add a touch of sophistication, too much gold can have quite the opposite effect on the aesthetic of your surroundings.”

Things to keep in mind when decorating with gold:

1. Add a touch of this metallic shade on a big surface. It can be on your floor with an interesting rug or a piece of modern art in gold hues to spice up your neutral space in a classy yet bold way.

2. Choose the real protagonist – an interesting, eclectic and unique piece of furniture, like an emblematic coffee table. The Eden Gold Center Table by Boca do Lobo is a good pick. Despite December being a cold month with the beginning of winter, temperatures don’t usually drop below zero and you will be exposed to picturesque scenery. The good thing about visiting touristic destinations during this time is that crowds are significantly smaller. There’s a wide range of things to see and do, from religious shrines and museums to beaches, hot springs and gardens. There are touristy gems to explore too, such as traditional tea ceremonies and noodle-making workshops. In this feature, we explore Tokyo and two regions offering some of Japan’s best.

TOKYO

Ueno Park is a popular city space lined with over 8,000 trees, including ginkgo, zelkova and cherry, it features a pond with an extensive lotus bed and attracts a variety of bird species during winter. The cultural highlights at Ueno Park include Tokyo National Museum, the city’s most popular art museum. It houses a comprehensive collection of artwork and cultural objects from Asia with a focus on ancient and mediaeval Japanese and Asian art from along the Silk Road.

Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines are an important part of Tokyo’s landscape. There are several that you can visit in and around Ueno Park. You can’t miss Kan’ei-ji Temple’s five-storey pagoda. It’s one of the few structures in the original Buddhist temple complex that has withstood calamities such as war and fire. The original layout consisted of more than 30 buildings spread across a considerable area of the park. Kan’ei-ji Temple is home to an engraved stone said to be a memorial to the souls of insects that died during a scientific study – a testament to the Buddhist principle of non-violence.

Other popular religious sites in the vicinity include Sensō-ji, an ancient Buddhist temple and Tokyo’s oldest, located in Asakusa. There is quite a bit to cover here, from the Thunder Gate, featuring a massive, 700-kilogram paper lantern, to the two waraji or straw sandals, each weighing 400kg. Exploring all of this could easily take an entire day. However, Nakamisedōri, the shopping street, is lined with many food stalls so you can rest and grab a bite to eat.

Nature lovers can also explore Hama-rikyū Gardens. Beautifully landscaped, the gardens boast a teahouse that serves traditional Japanese tea and sweets. The Imperial Palace East Gardens are only a 10-minute walk from Tokyo station. Stroll through the grounds of the former Edo Castle and climb the ruins. While none of the main buildings remains today, the moats, walls, entrance gates and several guardhouses still exist. The garden itself is wonderful to behold, with colourful flowers and plants that bloom all year round. Often seen as a day trip from Tokyo, the mountain town of Nikko is the perfect base for Alpine sightseeing. You can opt for a hiking or bicycle tour. The scenic routes, with stunning views and colourful foliage, are a true feast for the senses.

This region is known for its mountains, rivers and sea as well as for being close to Japan’s capital. A tourist attraction in the area is Ōwakudani, a volcanic valley in Hakone. You can walk along the trail into the volcanic zone with numerous steam vents and bubbling pools. The views from here are to die for. A popular touristy thing to do is eat a boiled egg that’s cooked in the hot spring pools. Still in Hakone, you can enjoy a sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashi with a view of the nearby mountains and Mount Fuji. Located in Kamakura, the Kōtoku-in Temple is known for its Great Buddha, a 13-metre bronze statue that stayed up even during a tsunami in the 15th century. Also, in Kamakura, you will find Hōkoku-ji Temple, popular for its spectacular bamboo garden and a tea house where you can enjoy matcha green tea while taking in the surrounding views. Yokohama, the prefecture’s capital, has some interesting things to see and do. The CupNoodles Museum Yokohama, located in Minato Mirai 21, features exhibitions about instant noodles and hands-on workshops. Yokohama Chinatown, one of the biggest in the world, has numerous restaurants and food shops to try. Yamashita Park is a popular place to relax and take a walk while enjoying waterfront views of the Port of Yokohama. Sankei-en Garden in Naka Ward, a large traditional Japanese-style garden with ponds, streams and undulating pathways, is a favourite destination too.

OKINAWA

A group of islands located at the southwestern tip of the Japanese archipelago, close to Taiwan. Compared to the rest of Japan, winter in Okinawa is pleasantly warm, with temperatures of around 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. Home to magnificent beaches and coastlines teaming with corals and other underwater life, if you enjoy the tranquillity of spending some winter time by the sea, this is the ideal destination. Manza Beach, near Ishikawa, is well-known and, though it’s part of a resort, it’s open to the general public too. An erstwhile tributary state of imperial Ming China, Okinawa is known for its native Ryūkyūan culture, which is distinctly different from the mainland. Its cuisine is influenced by Chinese cooking styles. Okinawan soba is quite popular and made using flour rather than the traditional buckwheat. Gōyā Chanpurū, a stir-fry dish of bitter melon combined with eggs and tofu, is another staple.

The act of eating is one of the most exciting experiences that we can embrace. It can bring back memories and expose us to new sensations.

Fernanda Langhammer embarked on a culinary journey at La Table Krug by Y, where she encountered exciting flavours and feelings.

Iam still trying to find my words after my dining experience at La Table Krug by Y at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. To say it was a memorable culinary journey wouldn’t do it justice, so I will try to transform the tastes, textures and emotions that I felt into a sequence of words to give you a sense of what to expect when dining there. However, I highly recommend that you go yourself to fully understand it and identify exactly which element will touch your soul. As soon as I arrived at the exclusive and private restaurant, which accommodates just 16 people in total, the iconic Chef Yann Bernard Lejard, Director of Culinary and Food and Beverage, came to greet me. He oversees all 14 dining destinations at the hotel, but La Table Krug by Y (he is the Y in the name) is where you are exposed to his personal touch and brilliance. The space is an ode to luxury with velvety chairs, wooden panels on the walls and cute little lamps creating the perfect ambience. In the middle of this unique space lies Yann’s portrait and right under it, a pedestal holds his most recent project, a massive book. An imposingly beautiful volume with a fantastic compilation of images that evokes the chef’s passion for art using the medium he knows best: food. The book, a collaboration with Brazilian photographer Sergio Coimbra, is a concept that extends the definition of live painting to an understanding of a living painting where the work is transformed each day, creating new beginnings.

Yann is, first and foremost, a creative mind. We are just lucky that he expresses his artistic talents through food. However, despite plating and playing with volume, colours and textures, his creations taste like food – comforting food. Somehow, he develops a culinary art movement which involves our senses without losing the real nature of the food. His dishes take you to new heights exposing your taste buds to unexpected sensorial experiences.

CHEF YANN BERNARD LEJARD

The first amuse-bouche was a big piece of sourdough bread with fennel and cumin seeds paired with saffron butter (my dining companion and I kept it next to us throughout the entire meal). The bread had the perfect crunchiness on the outside and a soft and moist interior. I love fennel seeds in bread and cakes (it takes me back to my childhood and the corn cake I used to eat); the flavour was just delightful. The second, a creamy textured pea soup adorned with caviar, was served on top of an impressive glass dome, and a beef bruschetta on a fried brioche base finalised the nibbles, giving us a flavourful introduction to this food voyage.

From the First Things First on the menu, we had the #Playwithfire (the names of the dishes are very original), which consisted of duck foie-gras cooked at a very high temperature, placed on top of caramelised seasonal fruits and plated with vibrant yellow mango coulis. My dining companion was delighted with the cooking style and over the moon that she could have the whole piece to herself. I did try the fruits, and they had a crunch and a perfect smoky hint.

We also had the #Groundreality, a visually striking dish that looked like a natural painting. It was composed of local vegetables such as zucchini, asparagus, broccoli, radish and more with different colours and textures due to the diverse cooking methods, complemented by a pea velouté. They tasted fresh and each bite revealed their true nature and flavours. I believe that is how you should treat vegetables, respecting their composition when cooking.

The #Wildwildeast finalised the appetiser feast with a big ravioli filled with assorted mushrooms bathing in an intense truffle sauce. The foamy white sauce made with whipped cream hid the mushroom reduction (with delicious pieces of smoked mushroom) and the base of the ravioli, so all we could see was a big ball of stuffed pasta –such a playful-looking dish. I absolutely love truffle oil, but it is a tricky item that needs to be used with wisdom. Chef Yann knows his ingredients intimately, so his hand on the oil was just spot on. The fragrance hit our nostrils before touching our taste buds and this sensorial experience made it even better.

The mains are creatively called Unpredictable Climax. The first dish was the #Tribute, which consisted of a salmon soufflé accompanied by scallop mousseline, caviar, beurre blanc, zucchini pearls and chives. While going back to this experience, I thought I wouldn’t be able to highlight one dish as my favourite, but I actually can. The scallop mousseline was definitely it. It was so airy

and comforting, with well-balanced flavours and consistency. I remembered my words to the chef: “I could live in this little pot”.

The other main was the #Pureinstinct with U.S. beef tenderloin ‘centre-cut’, white pepper foam and teriyaki sauce teamed with a velvety mashed potato. The meat was, as expected, cooked to perfection, with a dark brown searing and buttery smooth interior. The white pepper foam added a touch of complexity to the overall taste without overpowering it.

Chef Yann played with our taste buds and sense of smell, and it was time to provoke our feelings with his desserts. First, we were served a dish that actually resembled a stone – the large, smooth pebbles one sometimes finds on the beach. My companion mentioned that it looked like the stones she recently saw on a trip to Iceland. Cracking the black chocolate shell and finding a creamy lemon custard interior with delicate flavours was amazing.

La Table Krug by Y stands out for the surprise elements, and this would be repeated with The Reminiscing The Sweet Story, a magnificent dessert trolley with an assortment of mouth-wateringly beautiful treats. From the most exquisite fruit Charlotte cake (a recipe from Yann’s mum and a must-try) to tarts, fruits in syrup, bonbons, cake pops and so much more. It was interesting to notice that many of them were similar to the ones I indulged in as a child – I felt like a little kid again. The desserts vary from time to time and that day, we had the Ile Flottante (Floating Island) in the selection, which consists of a floating meringue on crème anglaise topped with almond shavings. It was so delicious that even chef Yann couldn’t resist and served some for himself joining us to chat about food, art and how he is transforming the culinary scenario wherever he goes. His creations are full of passion that is translated into every single dish and concept. He is an inspiration as a chef and as a person. His lovely restaurant serves a high-end dining experience without losing the intricate flavours and warm touch that homemade food gives us. As the morning of our test drive approached, we agreed the QX60 would have to be something special to live up to the label’s ever-growing reputation of consistently producing motor vehicles of superior quality. The moment the car came into view, however, we knew that INFINITI

had gone all out yet again, as we were immediately taken with every element of the exterior design that we laid our eyes on.

The 2023 model of this luxury SUV has been reimagined from the ground up, with this latest generation QX60 having been crafted to display a modern and refined look with its upright stance and performance-inspired styling.

At the front end, the uniquely fashioned grille features an origami-inspired mesh pattern that widens at the edges and, along with the standard LED headlamps – containing Kimono-fold patterning, emphasises the vehicle’s Japanese essence. These front lights also feature a distinctive piano key design that creates an unmistakable signature shape.

From front to rear, the strong aerodynamic form of the all-new QX60 is obvious, with full-length, dramatic yet simple body lines gently softening the robust stance of this powerful SUV. A fastback roofline, combined with standard 20-inch, machine-finished alloy wheels - coupled with low-profile tyres, together hint at the on-road intentions of this highperformance vehicle.

Additionally, we loved the two-tone paintwork of the body, along with the black roof rails and the branded side door chrome strips present on our premium model.

Lucky enough to be inspecting the top-of-the-range Autograph trim model, we were welcomed by an ultra-luxurious and functional interior design. This spacious three-rower is a family-friendly SUV with plenty of space to seat seven people comfortably. It features quilted, saddle brown, semi-aniline leather furnishings, complete with masterful, double-stitch contrast accents and piping.

The ergonomically designed ‘zero gravity’ front row seats are eight-way memory and power-adjustable, feature in-seat massages, offer plenty of both comfort and support and provide a commanding view of the road ahead. The second-row features captains’ chairs – standard with the Autograph trim level. The first two rows of seating have embossed seatbacks and rich open-pore wood accents. The all-new QX60 features INFINITI’s new InTouch 12.3-inch Interactive Display touchscreen that provides access to all infotainment features, including full smartphone connectivity with both wireless Apple CarPlay and USB-based Android Auto.

An INFINITI 12.3-inch dynamic Meter Display is paired with a crisp 10.8-inch head-up display that provides important information to the driver without eyes having to be taken off the road. The 2023 INFINITI QX60 combines intuitive technology and impressive driveline dynamics with an award-winning 3.5-litre V6. This highperformance engine is coupled with an all-new nine-speed automatic transmission and produces 279hp and 350Nm of torque.

The all-new, direct coupling, intelligent all-wheel-drive system is another significant upgrade and almost instantly engages whenever it detects wheel slipping. INFINITI’s Active Brake Limited Slip functionality can brake individual wheels to redirect torque to the wheels that cannot secure grip instantly. The result is ultimate control in even the most challenging of driving conditions.

According to Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” That is an important reflection for societies and a crucial element in the study of history. But when applying the same concept in our own lives, it can teach us a lot about ourselves.

Repeating actions is not necessarily a bad thing. Reflecting on past situations can help you avoid the not-so-good ones and reinforce the positive events. So, what is the best way to do it? Here go some ideas:

- Make a list of the things you’ve done this year that you are most proud of and take note of the things you are not so keen to repeat.

- Tidy up your space and put in evidence objects that bring good memories. It can be a recent trip souvenir or a gift from a beloved friend.

- When it comes to your wardrobe, get rid of clothes that bring you bad juju and wear more often the ones that give you joy and are associated with good feelings.

- 2022 was a year of re-discovering social gatherings, so print out some of your best moments and frame them or put them on your fridge. We usually gravitate to old photographs, but it is important to have the recent past close by to show you that you have been living your life at your best. Sometimes we think that only situations from many years ago were good and that it is not really true.

Your past has led and shaped you to where and who you are today. However, no matter what you discover while digging into it, please don’t forget to be kind to yourself.
