PAULE KA PARIS

Editor’s Letter I’ve just had a major overhaul on my limp and lifeless tresses which have now seen them transform to a midlength bob with more layers, to allow for texture on my inconceivably fine strands. I’m all about low maintenance when it comes to my hair, and I found myself reflecting on the month of love as a way to do something for myself - so here I am - ACTUALLY taking the time rather than just talking about it. Speaking of reflection, I think a lot of people love fashion because it is about embracing their personality through what they wear. I love the transformative quality, the effect that an item of clothing can have on the way people see you and the way you might see yourself. There’s something about the right pair of pants or a fabulous pair of shoes that can bring out a confidence in you that you didn’t realise you had. On a more personal level, the process of finding things that flatter you or others can be a fun experience on its own. Figuring out your colours, the silhouettes and shapes that flatter you, and the things that make you feel the most comfortable is fun for many people in itself. That is all we can do: try things, and see what sticks. Just remember, there’s no one way to go through life. Have fun and live love in the moment.

HUDA’S BEAUTY-BOOSTING SECRET REVEALED! Multi-million followed beauty mogul Huda Kattan rates award-winning liquid beauty supplement PURE GOLD COLLAGEN as her New Year skincare saviour.

With 31.3 million followers on Instagram, when Huda Kattan speaks, people listen. And as health and beauty resolutions are being made the world over this New Year, the beauty mogul and her team at Hudabeauty.com have turned their attentions to beautifying from the inside out – citing a daily dose of Pure Gold Collagen as an essential way to boost their skincare regime. Based on a unique blend of active ingredients, including hydrolysed collagen, hyaluronic acid, borage oil, vitamins and minerals, the awardwinning liquid supplement’s advanced formulations are specifically developed to maintain healthy skin, hair and nails by enhancing natural collagen production and increasing skin hydration as well as elasticity – all of which steadily decrease with age. A long-term fan of the liquid beauty supplement – revealing on her multimillion followed blog back in 2013 that she “Couldn’t live without it” – Huda re-shared her love of Pure Gold Collagen in a recent feature on HudaBeauty. com, whilst discussing ‘The best collagens to drink to perfect your skin.’ “The Huda Beauty team have been trailing these collagen supplements, and to be honest, they’re so delicious we’d drink them without the skin care benefits” revealed Hudabeauty.com. “But the benefits are major too. In a recent UK study, after three weeks of a group of people taking the supplements, skin hydration improved by 12% after three weeks and the appearance of wrinkles decreased by 15%, and 27% after six weeks. The supplement contains zinc, biotin, and copper, as well as Vitamin C, E, and B6, which help boost your metabolism and reduce signs of tiredness in the skin.” Available in three different ranges: Pure Gold for 25+, Forte for 45+ and Active. For best results drink 1 bottle (50ml) of pure gold collagen daily on an empty stomach for best absorption. Gold Collagen are available in Boots and other leading pharmacies 32

PRIME EYELIDS FOR EYESHADOW Use the custom doe-foot applicator and swipe Shape Tape Contour Concealer onto the eyelids blending out with the quickie blending sponge or fingers. GOING GREEN

There’s a natural beauty movement sweeping the globe, as high tech and complex products are being shelved for something simpler. We speak to beauty experts to discover why everyone is switching to more wholesome products.Words, ANGELA BEITZ For the past three years the only hair care range I have used is Rahua. It’s an all-natural hair care range made from Rahua nut oil which comes from the Amazon rainforest. It takes a couple of weeks for your hair to adjust as it detoxes and strips out all the badness from your hair and it takes a while to get used to the lack of foam and lather too, but my hair always feels clean, healthy and strong. It’s a myth you have to keep changing up your hair care range too and I take my products wherever I travel and even to the hair salon as I refuse to “cheat” on Rahua and pollute my hair with anything else! I am officially addicted. I use the Classic Range and it’s available in Harvey Nichols. Natasha Hatherall-Shawe Founder and CEO, tishtash I love Australian brand Sodashi; they use natural ingredients, organic where possible that are ethically sourced from around the world for their regenerative and therapeutic qualities. Their Brightening Marine Mineral Mask will revitalise tired, dull skin and bring it back to life, it’s perfect to boost your skin and it’s a lovely weekly treat. I also love their Body Brilliance Cream to slather onto dry skin and it has an exquisite whipped texture that melts into the skin with a blend of rich Madagascan Vanilla, exotic Ylang Ylang, Patchouli and Jasmine that really hydrates. All of their products smell divine; I’m hooked. Angela Beitz Publishing Director, Ohlala With the growing trend for taking a more natural approach to how we care for ourselves, for the NET-A-PORTER Clean Beauty Kit we edited the best-selling products that take a natural, clean, botanical or organic approach to beauty. It’s what I like to call ‘considered beauty’, as companies consciously choose what ingredients they use and, often more importantly, those that they leave out. Newby Hands Global Beauty Director at NET-A-PORTER 38

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Summer in Dubai tends to wreak havoc on my mane. I tend to rely heavily on natural hair masks and treatments during this time as the harsh heat and humidity really gets to my colored/ chemically treated dry hair. Although I’ve tried and tested many masks, the Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask from Briogeo is one of the few products that have actually helped with taming the frizz and dryness. I put it on of for 15 minutes after shampooing and the treatment mask restores moisture and natural vibrancy to my otherwise dry and dead locks. Formulated with natural ingredients such as rosehip oil and algae extracts, the mask really does work its magic on my hair by leaving it looking soft, shiny and healthy, until the next wash. Asha Yesudas Communications Executive, The Qode I’m obsessed with anything from LUSH - not only are their products (bath)bomb.com, but, their work ethos is pretty awesome too. Lush are renowned for their fight against animal testing and possess an array of economically friendly initiatives, including naked packaging, 100% vegetarian friendly ingredients alongside their plight of ethical buying - just to name a few. My ultimate product would have to be ‘Hair Custard’ which is a supremely creamy tub of comforting vanilla pod infusion and exquisite argan oil, whipped up into a mouth-watering hair dessert. The layers of softening Fair Trade organic cocoa butter, beeswax and honey are truly the perfect ensemble to style, hydrate and perfume your hair in a hurry. Sensational! LOVE London-based reflexologist PAOLO LAI is flying in for a visit to Gloss Salon & Spa and we couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to talk to this infamous healing mogul. Hello Paolo! Tell us about yourself and a brief overview of what you do. Hello Jayne! I’ve been practicing reflexology for the last 13 years, in London treating lots of different clients with Facial and Foot Reflexology. I love the healing effect of a reflexology treatment. Facial Reflexology is a spiritual facial, helping to reduce stress level and anxiety, due a stressful life. Using pressure points and massage techniques on your face can improve wellness relaxing muscles and the physical tone of your skin - leaving you lifted and glowing from within! During the treatment I use crystal tools - Rose Quartz to add crystal healing to the facial. Sound healing is used at the end of the treatment with sacred Full Moon Tibetan singing bowls, to help reconnect and feel more grounded. Traditional Foot Reflexology has been used for thousands of years by stimulating pressure points on the foot. It will help remove energy 42

blockages that put pressure on the physical body, creating tension, pain and discomfort. It makes you feel lighter, relaxed and extremely grounded. We are excited that you have a range of products and treatments commissioned exclusively for GLOSS SALON & SPA from the UK. Tell us what we should expect. The Moon Mist™️ is bespoke for Gloss Bahrain, alongside a selection of special crystals and essential oils used during Facial Reflexology and Foot Reflexology treatments that are specifically tailored for Gloss’ amazing clientele. You’re renowned in the beauty and wellness industry for your superb reflexology techniques during your esteemed facials - particularly your Crystal Facial where you use rose-quartz tools. How does a reflexology facial differ to a mainstream facial? I call it “LIFTING FROM WITHIN!”... It’s not a cleansing facial, but rather an Holistic treatment using pressure points and massage techniques to reboot the nervous system and improve collagen production whilst also allowing more oxygen to the muscles which reduces fine lines and creates a more even skin tone. Not to mention how it lifts your spirit, reducing both tension and stress levels. The Rose Quartz tools are ‘Gua-sha’ which is a chinese facial tool to further help the tone of the face and provides an additional smoothing effect. Rose Quartz is a powerful harmoniser

HEALTH Files of the body’s energy and its properties work to get us back in touch with love by helping us to remove the emotional wounds. It’s the stone of unconditional love, that’s why it’s perfect for facial treatments - not just this February. Other crystals can also be used during the treatment, in relation to the client needs. What is your favourite essential oil and why? Palo Santo as it comes from South America, where the tree needs to die for at least 20 years, before the oil can be distilled. It has a very sweet smell, used by Shaman for protection during a spiritual journey and it can help with inflammation and reducing tension. Tell us why you love Gloss Salon & Spa and why you’ve decided to collaborate with them as your exclusive partner in The Middle East. I’ve known Gloss for years, and I’ve always wanted to visit Bahrain. Gloss meets my idea of holistic approach in beauty. Not only focusing on the appearance but at a spiritual level. Living a life with less stress ultimately improves someone’s aesthetic and automatically makes them look younger and healthier… but, also to feel it. The MOON MIST™️ was created to improve relaxation, mood and protect. It’s fascinating that it is made every month during the Full Moon. How involved are you in the creation process? The Moon Mist™️ was created to help me during stressful time, because I needed something to spray and let go at problems in life. The moon has a super power on humans, because we are made of 70% water, the moon controls tides and sea level, the same way it can control us. The moon purifies and strengthens the power of gems and crystals, that’s way I place them in water during the full moon to absorb and release their powers. That is the base of the Moon Mist™️, then I add essential oil, alcohol to preserve it and then a pinch of salt for extra protection. The crystals I use change every time in relation to the Moon and what I want I want it to achieve. Different crystals have different healing properties. At the end I use a Full Moon Singing bowl to add sound healing. Stress is unfortunately an everyday factor when it comes to us ladies being social butterflies. Tell us how you de-stress and any words of wisdom you’d like to share with our readers. I practice my own type of meditation with my crystals. When you give yourself some time to let go, to any fear, transform and relinquish from the attachment, focusing on a higher energy you create space to evolve and change. During the change even people around you start changing by you omitting positive vibes. What is the inspiration behind your products? To really help my clients to change and improve their lives because if you don’t love yourself then how can you love anybody else!? We all like to combat ageing and we try to stay Paolo Lai is available at Gloss away fillers and botox as much as possible... TIME FOR TWO THE GULF SPA is self-proclaimed as ‘three floors of pure bliss and ultimate luxury where each detail has been meticulously taken care of to guarantee a memorable and unique experience’, and we can’t help but agree that this is the ultimate tranquil escape this month of love.

I

’m a proper stress head. Always have been, always will be. It’s something I’ve been working on over the years, but at the moment, I’m aware that my constant social calendar is subliminally freaking me out. Sometimes, you just need to take time to switch off and chill out, something I’m not great at doing. Something I had considered trying a few times, is escaping and treating myself to a little bit of a massage. My partner and I have done spa days before and the massages always leave you feeling so super relaxed. There’s something unique about going to a spa close to home that can offer a pampering experience. That’s why I was so excited to try out The Spa at The Gulf. On arrival I was handed a glass of detox water (always a promising start) and given a little tour of the spa. The first thing I noticed was this place is like a TARDIS – I wasn’t expecting so many treatment rooms! The place was so welcoming and was an oasis of tranquility. Soothing music was piped out and all the rooms are dimly lit and relaxing. Plus the scent of all the lotions and potions in the air really add to the comforting atmosphere. After our tours we were told a little about some of the treatments that they offer. They have something for everyone, any age, any sex, whether you’re looking for an absolute rejuvenation or just a little 46

With skincare partners including the organic brand Green Bar, Natura Bisse and Shiffa Gulf Spa offers a wide array of facials and skin treatments suited to your skin type, including special time for couples. They also offer a range of body treatments, from massages, scrubs and wraps. After our talk, we chose the Detoxification Package where I indulged in a Shiffa scrub, Green Bar aroma therapy massage followed by the Natura Bisse Vitamin C facial. This is in addition to the usage of the thermal facilities which allowed me to experience at first hand the magic they can do. Eager to get some stress busted, we changed into our fluffy robes and disposable underwear before we enjoyed the sauna and steam room infused with various essential oils. After this, I tottered away to shower off and get dressed in a doughy daze. All I can say is, their therapists have magic hands. I only realised how much tension and knotting I get in my shoulders when I’m having a massage, and there was plenty of it to work away at! My skin was severely dehydrated and had fallen guilty of a dull tone therefore I was recommended Natura Bisse the Vitamin C facial that smelled as wonderful as you can imagine using a variety of specialised serums, toners and moisturisers. I came out glowing both inside-and-out as the experience is so relaxing and the products are so amazing. The relaxation zone is the perfect final touch as I was served organic tea and gourmet cookies whilst sinking into the beds kitted out with own personal duvet, which hugged us as if we were on cloud nine. DECADE OF DESIGN

We speak to the man behind the eponymous SAKS FIFTH AVENUE, BAHRAIN as he spotlights what it means to be the Senior Division Manager of such a global brand. Introducing the man of the decade, MARK ASFAHANI. 60

H

“We have worked with so many local talents over the past 10 years where they have grown now to become esteemed regional brands, which is amazing to watch.”

ello Mark! Over the last decade, how do you feel that your role as Senior Division Manager for Saks Fifth Avenue has evolved? I moved to Bahrain in 2008 a month before Saks Fifth Avenue opened its doors. The experience and learnings that I have received has added so much to the person that I am today. On a personal level, Bahrain is where I got married and I now have two beautiful kids - it’s home now for me. On a professional level, so many members of the team started in 2008 and are still working with me in 2019 making us feel like Saks is our second home and not just a place of work - this is a true testament to Saks Fifth Avenue as a brand. The brands we have seen in the store have changed over the years, either due to the change in our local guests’ fashion appetite or taste because we removed brands trying to make space for new and updated ones, or because we try and accommodate new and updated brands, making the experience so much better. We have worked with several local talents over the past 10 years where they have grown now to become esteemed regional brands which is amazing to watch. In your personal opinion, how important do you consider fashion trends? Do trends have any importance as all? I wouldn’t say all fashion trends hold importance, however, what I consider important are the new fashion trends that are picked up on in the region. I would also consider the new fashion trends that have become quite strong in past years versus previous years where they weren’t seen on the runways or labelled as trends. These trends can give us a feel for the shift in culture and the general public’s lifestyles and values. The relatively new trends like athleisure and sustainable fashion are great examples. Working in the frontline of such an eponymous luxury department store opens your eyes to the evolution of fashion. Has catwalk fashion lost its connection to what people wear from day-to-day too much? There have always and will always be looks that are show stoppers, more for the catwalk and celebrities than for everyday wear. These over the top and mostly unwearable looks serve several purposes like showcasing the designer’s creativity, technical skills, vision for the brand and of course for publicity. Within the overall show and collection will be more wearable pieces and key trends that will trickle down to the stores. At the end of the day brands create products that people want to wear - it’s a business of lifestyle at the end.

In times of social media (especially Instagram) do you think differently about Saks’ design layout and the impact it might have in a photo or a video? The experience is everything at Saks, and nowadays every moment and every experience is shared on social media. We surely create memorable “Instagrammable” moments at our events and activities. The visual experience in the store itself is social media worthy as we keep the windows and display areas refreshed with the latest collections, trends and styles. Several beautiful new shop-in-shops like Valentino, Givenchy, Pleats Please and Jimmy Choo have opened as will our new beauty department with a completely new look and exciting brands to capture. Staying true to the brand’s DNA is crucial to retain the same feel and experience in any Saks that you would visit globally. Saksfifthavenue.com is now shipping to Bahrain and we are enthralled. Fashion shopping: online or in a store, and why? Online shopping is a way of life now. Time is the scarcest commodity. Customers are not limited anymore to online or instore and in many cases are doing both at the same time. However online shopping is now a fact of life and any company who doesn’t understand the importance of having the omni-channel experience for its clients will no doubt fail in the future. Our clients won’t adapt to our ways of doing business but we have to adapt to theirs. Online shopping comes in handy quite a lot when I’m looking to compare products or looking to buy from a brand that is not available in Bahrain. If you are asking me for my preference, it’s definitely in store. First of all, I am able to touch the actual product, see the quality and try the fit to be confident of my purchase. I also get to take it home that same instant rather than waiting for the delivery and dealing with the hassle that sometimes comes along with it. Second, and at times more importantly, is the experience and the service that I receive in a store that comes not only from the way it looks but from the salesperson - I like the human interaction. What collections/designs of designers/brands do you consider interesting in-store? Why? It’s difficult to choose as each brand has something different and interesting to offer within each collection. Off-White is a noteworthy brand, it’s relatively new and extremely hot with many items selling before they hit the shelf. The founder Virgil Abloh appeals to the new generation and brings contemporary cool wherever he collaborates.

OHLALA Spotlight

How would you describe your own individual style? I would like to think of myself as a classic dresser, one day you will see me in my three piece suit, a pocket square and a tie with cufflinks, and others I’d be in my blue jeans bright colour loafers and other days I would be in my heavy metal t-shirt, ripped jeans and converse shoes. Like many people, style is an expression of mood for me. We’ve all been guilty of a fashion faux pas over the years. What fashion sins have you committed in the past? I attended a very important meeting in NYC with a brown shoe on the left foot and a black shoe on the right. On a serious note, fashion is a form of expression of the culture at the time that it is introduced and it needs to be either relevant and commercial or adventurous and game changing, and it all depends on how good you are in hiding your pictures from years ago. How would you describe the fashion scene in Bahrain based upon your observations over the past 10 years? I would have to say that year upon year it is becoming more saturated, with most luxury brands now available in the Kingdom. Saks Fifth Avenue played a big part in introducing key names in the luxury fashion industry over the past decade even up until today with the likes of Saint Laurent Paris, Balenciaga, Chloe and Givenchy to name a few. People’s appetite for fashion I believe has also grown and they have become more open to experimenting with the latest trends. Additionally, from a local 62

offering of fashion brands, Bahrain is home to many extremely talented and successful designers, be it of accessories or ready-to-wear or bags. Tell us why our readers should visit Saks Fifth Avenue this Valentine’s. It’s a chance to gift a loved one with something unique and exclusive, our sales staff will offer expert advice and assistance making sure that they choose the ideal gift. It’s also the perfect place to shop for oneself to look extra special for the evening. @saksme / saksme.com

ALL-SUITE GEM

The Merchant House, Manama, Bahrain, part of the Campbell Gray Hotels group, is one of the most interesting new additions to the charming city of Manama. Designed for both business and leisure,

the allsuite boutique hotel features 46 suites, each with an open-plan kitchen and dining area, as well as open-plan sitting rooms featuring a dining table, writing desk and lounge area. With Bahrain’s traditional economy based on pearling, fishing, boatbuilding and import trade, the juxtaposition of the city’s pearling past and its oilrich future is everywhere to be seen, with the old-meets-new design of The Merchant House a fitting tribute to both the country’s rich heritage and its forward-thinking outlook. Sleek and modern, The Merchant House offers serene respite from the bustling outside world. That said, there’s nothing minimalistic about the striking design. Buckets of character seep through its every nook and cranny, while splashes of colour hint at the technicoloured world outside,

with the multi-sensory souk mere minutes away. The area behind the souk is typical to many older downtown areas in GCC cities, overflowing with small shops selling everything from nuts to mobile phone accessories. The hotel’s interior design is based on a tangible sense of place relating to the location and the cultural significance of the Bab Al-Bahrain area that is weaved into the clean, contemporary look. The Merchant House is an eclectic new establishment, the creation of which is in itself a form of cultural expression – as diverse as the society that it is a part of. Bringing Campbell Gray Hotels’ special brand of hospitality to Bahrain, hotelier Gordon Campbell Gray is understandably proud of his latest project. REGIONAL Escapes

SPLASH OF LIFE

Step away from the regular - your Aloft Palm Jumeirah adventure awaits on the Jumeirah archipelago. With a Rooftop restaurant with 360 degree view of Dubai Skyline, your senses are well and truly catered for. Vibrant and delectably eclectic.

This was my first impression of Aloft as I moseyed through the lobby and into the Re:mix lounge area. It will feel like walking into the coolest converted loft in New York or that friend with the apartment you just adore, but, cannot replicate. Open shelving with carefully selected bric-a-brac and a dynamic use of colour both in the upholstery and décor makes ALOFT unique and enticing. The philosophy behind Aloft is one of stepping away from normality and what is expected particularly on The Palm. It has an ‘easy-breezy’ attitude which immediately instils a sense of calm and relaxation in guests. It is elegant and hip yet not fussy and formal. Guests are encouraged to find their own style. I was more than happy to accept this mantra. My room was light and bright with the signature beds adorned with crisp white bedding making them incredibly inviting. The vivid accents of colour which made up the spectrum of the rainbow and then some, have been brought into the styling of each room too. Ochre and Turquoise provide a nod to the views outside of the Gulf and the sandy fringes of the palm fronds. The amenities provide everything necessary for making your stay comfortable and convenient. The rooms offer a level of real luxury but in a very contemporary way. On further exploration the pool area dazzled me. Love at first sight. The loungers are presented in an array of sunny, vibrant colours and the clear waters of the pool mirroring the gulf beyond are breathtaking. Vast day beds with sun screens mimicking that of an infant’s pram which could be drawn over you to shield you from the harshest rays were pure decadence. The private beach area was a combination of the best of the Caribbean and the French Riviera. Parasols, brightly coloured bean bags and luxuriant loungers would all ensure that you wouldn’t stray far from here. Lay back, relax and unwind whilst becoming engrossed in a good book or simply watching the world go by.

“The loungers are presented in an array of sunny, vibrant colours and the clear waters of the pool mirroring the gulf beyond are breathtaking.” So after a long day of finding your own style and enjoying that of the hotel you will require sustenance and some form of libation. WXYZ Bar complete with stained glass partitions and the one and only Azure Blue Bar, complete with high stools upon which guests can perch and admire their surroundings is the perfect spot to start your evening. Undoubtedly your next port of call should be Luchador, the in house Mexican eatery and rooftop bar. The inside is impressive enough with long exposed beams extending across the width of the interior of the restaurant. Deconstructed chandeliers and industrial exposed bulbs blended perfectly with traditional Mexican patterned fabrics and colourful murals, once again taking this far away from the regular or indeed the norm. Please prepare yourself for the open bar area though. The design features are so incredibly clever that you don’t notice them; the effect that they create is what strikes you. The glass backed bar allows guests to take in full length views of the Palm and the iconic buildings on other fronds from their high stools whilst sipping something one of the mixologists has concocted. The chill out area with voluminous low sofas and lanterns invite you to venture outside and stay as long as you wish. Once you have taken in all the bar areas has to offer and you remember your appetite, then the abundant selection of types of guacamole including salmon and chilito or the zesty , fresh ceviches will certainly complement the fruity margaritas you may have chosen to accompany the dishes. Fish, Beef and Lamb Tacos or indeed their Taquitos provide bountiful bundles bursting with flavours and spice. Each dish mirrors the light, easy breezy approach at Aloft. In addition the hotel offers an all day eatery East Seaboard and also a kiosk which provides healthy snacks for those on the run or who simply want to make the most of the pool and beach areas throughout the day. Aloft is just what it has claimed to be “One step beyond”. Beyond the regular and the conventional particularly that of The Palm area of Dubai. It is not a home away from home but rather the opportunity to enjoy escapism and relaxation in the most vibrant of settings. @aloftpalm www.ohlala-magazine.com

ello Anna! Can you give us a little history of how you got to where you are today, as a Complex General Manager of two prestigious hotels? I wasn’t academically gifted as a child and in all honesty I probably spent too much time talking at school. The results I achieved in my O-Level examinations were mediocre and it was mostly down to the fact that my parents were so keen for me to study A levels so initially I chose this route at college. During this time I began waitressing in a local hotel and I absolutely loved interacting with people in this way. After a few months, it was clear that this was the path I wanted to take and despite the fact that my parents were not keen, I chose to switch to a BTEC course which was much more suited to a career in the hospitality industry. During this time I got as much experience in a variety of areas as I could. Shortly after completing my studies my parents relocated from Yorkshire to Hampshire. My first job with Holiday Inn was with housekeeping and I had to clean 16 rooms a day! This gave me an insight into how valuable each element and department is within hotels. Guests are demanding, regardless of the standard of hotel and ensuring these standards are met, if not surpassed is so important. I was then accepted onto the in-house training programme and spent time with every department. It provided such valuable experience and gave

“Difficulty and adversity breeds creativity and the role of the leader is to keep everyone working for the same common goal. Everyone has doubts and days that aren’t so positive but it’s overcoming that which is the important thing.”

70

www.ohlala-magazine.com

me a great grounding in all aspects of hospitality. I then worked in hotels in Plymouth, London and Slough. Again, they offered me very different but very valuable experience. The hotel in Plymouth was much slower in pace with lots of Coach Parties arriving daily. The London Metropole was another massive learning curve for me before I moved on to the Slough/Windsor Marriott as assistant Food & Beverage Manager. In order to progress within this industry it takes determination and dedication. I knew that I was going to be the General Manager of a five star hotel, this was always my goal. I finally achieved this at the age of 32. Working with Carl Leaver (then General Manager of Slough/

Windsor Marriott at Heathrow) was a real turning point in my career. He instilled in me the importance of being able to manage effectively through delegation. You have to trust and empower your team effectively in order to get things done. This period also showed me that encouraging resilience was and is incredibly important and that sometimes facing rejection and learning how to deal with setbacks and move on is vital. Tell us about your challenges and how you’ve been able to exude resilience in the face of adversity throughout your career spanning over 20 years. Being in a senior leadership role demands resilience. The time I spent with Café Royal preparing for the place to close down meant that I had to instil resilience in the staff who were facing redundancy. This resilience would allow them to move on and progress in their careers. Equally, the time I spent commuting between the hotel I was managing in Jersey and overseeing the inception of a boutique hotel in Surrey taught me how to rise to the challenge rather than giving in to adversity. It was hard work but once again such a valuable experience and showed me that I could still perform exceptionally well even when I was pushed to my limits. Difficulty and adversity breeds creativity and the role of the leader is to keep everyone working for the same common goal. Everyone has doubts and days that aren’t so positive but it’s overcoming that which is the important thing. What is the secret to the continuous success of The Westin and Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain properties? We are constantly looking at how we can develop all areas of the hotels. We focus on the management and the staff and ensure that the workplace is a positive place for all, regardless of their role. This is reflected in the standards of service within the hotel. We take care of our associates which means that they are happy to be here and in turn take pride in their work. Our Guest Relations Team love to create ‘Wow!’ moments whether that be personalised magazines or creating family trees for guests. We use service and personal, emotional connections to keep guests happy and to compete with some of the newer hotels in the city. Developing our digital strategy and ensuring we work together as a close knit team are also our two key priorities. Are women still entering into this industry? What advice would you give them. I feel that this has never been a better time for women to enter this industry. Hospitality as a whole has a dedicated focus on encouraging more women to develop into senior leadership positions. Therefore particularly in the Middle East opportunities for women in hospitality are more abundant than they have been in the past. Previously wanting to be a successful Senior Leader and raising a family was a stumbling block for a lot of women but companies are trying to ensure a balance can be found and providing greater opportunities for women in leadership. We at the complex are very committed to the development of women in our hotels. With the constant influx of social media, is it more challenging today to showcase what makes your property unique? How does this affect day-to-day management? With social media I think it’s about creativity. We’re always trying to think of how we can change our posts and social media content. We always try to add value and think about how we can try to tell a story and engage interest. Bloggers play a valuable role in promoting the brand

“The chefs are superb and I think the quality of food speaks for itself. The menus are rotated so that even regulars will enjoy slightly different experiences each time they visit.” and the hotel and it’s important to us to highlight the signature features of the hotel to them when they visit us. A big challenge for us over the next few years is engaging more fully with the Arabic market in Arabic, and trying to do our social media videos in Arabic. We always need to think about additional ways in which we can expand our audience and therefore our market. With a combination of eight F&B outlets in your portfolio is it challenging to compete with so many great stand-alone restaurants in Bahrain? We have a unique position here because being connected to the mall means that guests often don’t always want to leave the hotel again to dine therefore our competition lies within the mall as opposed to other restaurants in the likes of Adliya. The themed nights at Le Méridien are almost always sold out every week due to the fact that they have a following now. We have found a niche market here and this is very important. At one time hotels found it easy to attract diners to their restaurants because the only places with licenses were hotels, but over time hotels have had to raise their game as more and more competition has opened up in the market. I particularly like the Seafood Night and the Friday Brunch in Baharat. We have an amazing brigade of chefs and I think the quality of food speaks for itself. The menus are rotated so that even regulars will enjoy slightly different experiences each time they visit. Our Chefs also love to come out and speak with the guests which enhances the experience. You house the largest hammam in Bahrain, which is certainly no mean feat! Tell our readers why Heavenly Spa by Westin is the ultimate indulgence and why they need to visit. I think we have focussed on the service levels and created a really serene environment. When guests arrive they are greeted by the team who endeavour to create a ‘Zen’ experience. You will leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. The selection of treatment rooms is second-to-none and you can spend the whole day there being pampered. How do you feel about your transition of moving to Bahrain? I feel extremely blessed to be working here in Bahrain and the past three years have been incredible for me. Bahrainis are very inclusive in their culture and because it’s a small place it is very easy to settle here and become part of the community. Both Dubai and London can be faceless and it can be difficult to feel included and at home. This is why I feel so happy to be working here and feeling such a part of the community. @westinbahrain / @lemeridienbahrain www.ohlala-magazine.com

ROMANTIC RENDEZVOUS

At PLUMS, expect the unexpected as each dish is constructed to have levels of flavour and differing textures to titillate and intrigue diners on an impeccable culinary journey.

T

here is little doubt that the nation most synonymous with love is France. The capital proudly boasts the title The City of Love and this has been cleverly transposed into the finer details of the Valentine’s experience at Plums. The restaurant itself is the epitome of chic and sophistication. Demure and decadent at the same time. The décor is the perfect blend of minimalism and luxuriance. The vibrant, lush fabrics used to upholster the sofas and the shots of colour injected via table linen and scatter cushions prevent the minimalist theme from becoming clinical. The clean lines and quirky angular bucket style seating is perfectly complemented by the more intimate ‘nooks’ which create spaces for private dining. The bowler hats suspended above diners create a talking point, as well as a lighting feature simply delightful. The Objet D’Art scattered, in the most thoughtful, deliberate way around the restaurant elevate the dining experience beyond anything I have had the pleasure of encountering before. After a benchmark had been set like this I was delighted to discover that the Valentine’s Dining experience surpassed my expectations. The beauty is most definitely in the detail, the crisp white napkins presented as love letters sealed with red rose petals, a touch of romance and a theme which was continued throughout the impeccable presentation of their perfectly executed dishes. Plums have ensured that the menu provides a suitably hedonistic experience with the finest of ingredients and cutting edge culinary techniques. The brimming bread board with rustic batons and slices

“The flavour was intense and each morsel literally melted in the mouth. The infusion of rose water provided a respectful nod to the location. Magnifique!” of fresh, crusty bread, the perfect vessels for dipping into the trio of butters; truffle, chilli and plain. The Amuse Bouche was nothing short of splendid, Oyster adorned with Beetroot-Ginger Jelly so delicately decorated that it resembled a tiny work of art. Almost too good to eat, almost! It was tantalising and teased my palate, making me keen to try the next indulgent offering. The Risotto with tender Green Asparagus and Strawberry Foam once again encapsulated the finest of french classical technique and the spirit of romance. The Lobster prepared in a gratinated style with a dusting of pink to enhance the sense of occasion was luscious and so flavoursome that it seemed impossible to surpass it. As we were presented with an array of steak knives, ranging from rustic wooden handled blades which could have been taken straight from the set of Game of Thrones through to razor sharp surgical instruments. My companion and I opted for the English and French steak knives whilst we waited expectantly for the arrival of our medium-rare Chateaubriand to arrive. The presentation was once again, classically French, minimalist with emphasis on the quality of this prime cut of beef. The flavour was intense and each morsel literally melted in the mouth. The infusion of rose water provided a respectful nod to the location. Magnifique! The Apple plucked straight from the Garden of Eden, the most perfectly presented sharing dessert was delectable and heightened the sense of conviviality and intimacy. The symbol of the original love affair of Adam and Eve was the perfect conclusion to this Valentine treat. The notion of ‘amour’ was encapsulated in every element of the menu and the fabulous surroundings at Plums. There are few techniques and modes of cuisine which can top that of classical haute cuisine, therefore when spoiling your significant other heading to Plums for the Crème de la Crème of Manama is an absolute must! #RCMemories indeed! @ritzcarltonbahrain www.ohlala-magazine.com

MASERATI LEVANTE S GRANLUSSO MASERATI HAS ENSURED ITS CONTINUED SUCCESS WITHIN THE PREMIUM SUV MARKET WITH THE EXCEPTIONAL LEVANTE S GRANLUSSO.

W

hen it comes to luxury vehicle design, there are few manufacturers that can compete with the Maserati brand. This statement is proven through their continuous bold and beautiful designs such as the new Maserati Levante S GranLusso. Maserati entered the SUV market in recent years where the original Levante models soon proved to be a huge success. Their latest offering is set to improve on their now already established foothold in the premium SUV market and we at Ohlala Magazine were most excited to thoroughly inspect their latest offering. The exterior of the GranLusso clearly showcases the Maserati DNA throughout. The imposing signature grille has been designed to make an immediate visual impact and pays homage to historical Maserati models such as the Tipo 60 Birdcage. The muscular shape of the vehicle’s shoulders gives it a distinctive and attractive style that only the Italians can provide. The streamlined nature of the overall design is accentuated by the flow of the front wings, emphasising the shape of the engine compartment lid and running into the headlight surrounds at the frontend. These effective headlights feature both Bi-Xenon and LED technology. The silhouette of the Levante moves from its feline-inspired headlights along the side of the car to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar. The result is a coupé look that is enhanced by the frameless doors. The side profile is defined by a swaged line

82

www.ohlala-magazine.com

that runs the entire length of the car that highlights its muscular shape and emphasises its underlying strength. All-in-all, the exterior construction of the vehicle appears flawless as one may expect from such a revered automobile brand. It is upon entering the vehicle however, that one begins to feel like royalty. The interior boasts an aluminium and chrome finish with a high gloss Erable trim that is simply stunning. The extremely comfortable heated and ventilated, standard leather seats can be further enhanced with the dualcolour leather option and customers can personalise the interior according to their individual tastes. A total of 28 interior colour combinations ensure you are not only driving one of the finest vehicles on the road, but also one that is customised to your specific preferences. The dashboard and central console have both been redesigned to accommodate the 8.4” Touch Screen, the cluster of drive mode buttons as well as the brand-new rotary knob and air suspension switch. This proved to be a very handy setup that assists in ensuring the vehicle’s features are accessible to the driver. When it comes to internal roominess, this car is top-class. The rear seats easily accommodate three adults, with more than enough leg and head room for all, thanks to the ergonomic configuration of the seats. The luggage compartment of the Levante S has been designed to provide a large and versatile load space of 580-litres. That is enough to for any family trip to the airport. The standard power tailgate opens and closes automatically and has a

special anti-pitching function that immediately stops the closing procedure when an obstacle is detected. The real excitement of the day began when the ignition was engaged. The Levante S GranLusso houses a V6 twin-turbo GDI petrol engine designed and manufactured by Ferrari. With 430 hp @ 5570 rpm and 580 Nm of flat torque in “sport” mode, this Maserati is capable of powering from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 264km/h. The feeling of this large machine surging effortlessly forward was exciting to say the least made all the better by the thought of the eco-friendly nature of this new generation of Maserati engines. The ZF AT8 – HP70 gearbox ensures comfort, faster gear shifting, better fuel consumption and reduced noise, vibration and harshness, resulting in one smooth ride. The Levante S features a stateof-the-art braking system that deals superbly with its high performance, guaranteeing full control for the driver. Several driving modes ensure your vehicle is functioning at its very best in any environment. Not only is this car a beauty inside and out, but is also one of the safest vehicles to drive on the roads. Features include Hill Holder, Hill Descent Control, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Blind Spot Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Rear View & Surround View Camera as well as Park Assist. In a nutshell, this vehicle ticks all of the right boxes when it comes to safety, performance and presence and is a worthy contender for the top of the premium SUV segment.

“The feeling of this large machine surging effortlessly forward was exciting to say the least made all the better by the thought of the ecofriendly nature of this new generation of Maserati engines.”

MISS Ohlala

I DON’T LIKE IT … I LOVE IT MISS OHLALA IS FEELING RATHER LOVING THIS MONTH AND DEPICTS THE TRUE MEANING OF THAT INFAMOUS WORD. When American romance novelist and screenwriter Nicholas Sparks wrote ‘The best love is the kind that awakens the soul; that makes us reach for more…’ he was speaking about the love shared by two people, however, this statement could apply to so many scenarios and situations which involve love in any one of its many manifestations. In a changing society, governed by social media where social conventions and morality are constantly shifting and evolving how do we perceive love and how does it impact upon the way we choose to live our lives? Some feel that without trust, love cannot flourish and be enjoyed to its full potential. The ability to open one’s heart without reservation is surely down to that sense of security. This applies to both friendship and other relationships where all bonds are built on trust and without it you have nothing. When trust is broken a sense of fear creeps in and to quote one of American Filmmaker George Lucas’ finest creations ‘Fear is the path to the dark side, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering’. So is trust the defining feature of love? Commitment, passion, affection, intimacy and honesty evidently ensues and I am certain you are adding to the list as you read this. 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

PAULE KA PARIS

Unconditional love is surely a constant which exists whether trust is broken, feelings hurt or neglected and expectations left unfilled. To love a child or friend unconditionally without any expectation of recompense or any defined boundaries which can not be crossed must be an exception to the ‘rule of trust’? Therefore, the most pure form of love does not require trust? ‘A Love Supreme’ the title of a fanzine, but equally a statement of the power of emotion linked with devoting oneself to a sport or indeed a past-time. This requires commitment, selflessness, enjoyment and passion just as a friendship or relationship might. The tears of a sportsman as they stand aloft, adorned with a medal or sash, listening to their national anthem illustrates this strength of emotion. This love for their sport and the pride associated with it as they represent their team or country. So pick your favourite statement about love and stick with it …. ‘Love is all we need’, ‘Love is patient’, ‘Love is an act of faith’, ‘Love knows no boundaries’, ‘Love makes the world go round’, ‘Love Yourself First ’ or my personal favourite, ‘Love conquers all’
