January is here, which means that 2023 has arrived. I just hope this year doesn’t pass in a blink like 2022 and that the things I promised to work on in the last year (and, of course, didn’t) do become a reality in the New Year. Miss OHLALA has some wisdom to share in this regard.
We start our issue with fashionable pages bringing some winter trends to embrace while the weather is still blowing a chilly breeze outside. We also bring awesome-looking jewellery and watches that can give a sophisticated touch to your outfits.
The beauty pages are filled with the latest launches from Guerlain and Lancôme. We also explored all the beauty services at Dessange Paris Bahrain and had a relaxing and pampering session at Dar Wafa, a Moroccan-inspired spa. We talked to Leslie Garduque, the Founder and Managing Director of Media Circuit, about career, entrepreneurship and what it is like to live in Bahrain.
A new interior design trend is here to stay and we uncover ways of introducing it in your home. Are you curious? Go to our OHLALA Homes pages to find out. Are you planning a wellness retreat this year? We bring three countries offering high-end treatments that can’t be missed.
We dined at Masso, in Adliya, for a journey into the comforting flavours of Mediterranean cuisine. And we start 2023 driving the luxurious new BMW 7 Series 740i, a smooth ride for a year full of new adventures!
2023, we are ready for you!

This month, exciting new lines and collaborations are at the centre of our fashion and beauty round-up.
The jewellery brand Jacquie Aiche has partnered again with clothing label NSF to launch two new limited-edition cashmere sweaters. The designs bring NSF’s unique style, blending Jacquie Aiche’s classic Tribe Eye motif that resonates with the Middle East. Both pieces in the collection have been intarsia-knitted (a knitting technique that involves blocks of colour) in soft cashmere and designed with an easy, relaxed fit that’s perfect for layering. The jumpers come in colours that are reminiscent of the recurring theme in Jacquie Aiche Jewels – Mother Nature. “Since its launch in 2020, our NSF x Jacquie Aiche collaboration has become an everyday essential for our tribe. Our new cashmere layers are comfortable and luxurious and can be worn every day and in every season,” commented Jacquie Aiche, the jewellery brand founder and designer.
The beauty brand Lancôme entrusted its symbolic rose to contemporary French artist Richard Orlinski for a pop art reinterpretation. The Lancôme x Richard Orlinski Rose packaging celebrates the encounter of beauty and art – a multi-dimensional trinity of roses using his electric aesthetic. He often creates animal sculptures in pop colours with his signature faceted style – art that sparks joy. In Richard Orlinski’s hands, the sublime rose is recreated. “It is a rose with many facets: It is feminine, complex, essential. I decided to reinvent it, to give it an extraordinary, unexpected and precious side, like a jewel,” said Richard Orlinski. The design comes in three shades: gold, rose gold and silver. The artist and the luxury brand share roots in the sophisticated French style and craftsmanship and find a new freedom of expression with the creation. Symbolising Lancôme’s savoir-faire and generosity for 85 years, the timeless rose represents and inspires the beauty brand and its innovative lines.
The luxury car brand Rolls-Royce launches Cullinan – Inspired by Fashion, two prêt-àporter collections, the bold Re-Belle and the striking Fu-Shion. These exquisite creations by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective are inspired by vibrant hues and textures seen in the world of high fashion. Each collection includes two interior colourways defined by iconic accent colours: Lime Green or Peony Pink for Re-Belle and Mandarin or Forge Yellow for Fu Shion. Each interior style can be paired with one of two carefully selected exterior looks – either eye-catching or more discrete and understated. “With Cullinan – Inspired by Fashion, we drew inspiration from the world of our patrons – individuals with eclectic tastes who define trends and influence current movements in the fields of art, fashion and design,” says Celina Mettang, Bespoke Colour and Material Designer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
MAX&Co. has launched the latest chapter in its spring and summer 2023 &Co.llaboration series, a partnership with Bandai Namco Europe S.A.S., the company behind the ‘90s fever: the Tamagotchi. Conceived in Japan in 1996, this interactive digital pet and egg-shaped device quickly became a global phenomenon. The Tamagotchi in Paris capsule combines the nostalgia of the ‘90s with typical French style, with playful figures and pixelated graphics applied in eye-catching pieces such as the Breton tees and berets. Beaded and embroidered characters and motifs – including hearts and the Tamagotchi itself – appear across the collection, bringing a twist to tailored cotton shirts and indigo jeans. ‘Eat, sleep, repeat’, the simple instructions for looking after these toys, decorates the back of tees, the front of slouchy sweaters and jacquard collars. The &Co.llaboration capsules are a celebration of the MAX&Co. ethos of togetherness – an ongoing part of the brand’s story.
The footwear brand Malone Souliers has launched The Emily in Paris collection, a collaboration with the romantic comedy television series created by Darren Star for Netflix. Set and filmed in Paris, the series stars Lily Collins as an aspiring marketing executive. Emily in Paris is a show about style, with each key character’s personality communicated through the clothes they wear. Emily is a brand-new shoe silhouette set apart by a striking bow and available in a number of iterations, from evening-ready black and white satin to whimsical pink gingham. Camille is inspired by the character of the same name and Emily’s confidante and guide to all things French. Taking Camille’s elegant personal style as a starting point, the shoe is graceful and purposeful in its shape, with a large, crystallised heart motif on the toe. Mindy, named after Emily’s closest friend and fellow outsider to the Parisian culture, was designed as an eye-catching number embellished with organza appliqué flowers across the toe. There is also a nod to the show’s male characters with a couple of timeless men’s shoes.
Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils the Rendez-Vous Sonatina Peaceful Nature series to keep track of time with a stylish twist.
Swiss luxury watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre enriches its highly coveted Rendez-Vous Sonatina series with three new exquisite timepieces that have been inspired by Asia’s centuries-long artistic tradition of depicting the natural world. Released as a limited edition of 10 pieces each, the Rendez-Vous Sonatina Peaceful Nature trilogy is a joyful ode to nature.
The watches exemplify a feminine expression of time that celebrates both precision and artistry while also showcasing the decorative crafts that Jaeger-LeCoultre has thoroughly mastered in its Métiers Rares (Rare Handcrafts) atelier: miniature-painting, lacquer work and gem-setting. The use of lacquer, with its incomparable translucence and rich lustre, draws on deep links between Asian craft and European style.
The three new watches feature different dials bearing natural symbols. In a dial of deep blue-green lacquer, a crane soars over a pine tree – a symbol of longevity, happiness and a soaring spirit. A golden-brown dial is adorned with a kingfisher bird and delicately painted branches of a red quince tree – a symbol of beauty, virtue and fidelity. And on a black dial, a vivid, orange-coloured koi fish swims beneath the gently rippling surface of a pond, framed by the branches of a willow tree – a symbol of strength, courage and perseverance.
A delicate oval-shaped ring of diamonds runs beneath the applied numerals, drawing the eye to the painted image and complementing a glittering circle of grain-set diamonds on the bezel and case. Each watch has 160 diamonds totalling 1.86 carats.
All three 38.2mm watches are crafted in 18-carat rose gold cases and powered by the finely complex self-winding Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 735, visible through a transparent sapphire case-back. This movement comes with a chiming complication that rings when the time passes the Rendez-Vous star and a unique day/night indicator developed specifically for the Sonatina.
Completing this elegant mix, each timepiece is embellished with an alligator leather strap that flatters the colour of the dial and is fastened to the wrist with a rose gold folding buckle.
Jaeger-LeCoultre collections are available at Bahrain Jewellery Centre (BJC).

Embody a warrior princess, wearing these luxurious works of art by Fabergé, in collaboration with the award-winning television series, Game of Thrones.
Known for their exceptional jewellery, watches and objets d’art, as well as bespoke commissions for a discerning international clientele, Fabergé is a revered name in the world of jewellery. The maison, in collaboration with Game of Thrones, has launched the first in a series of unique high jewellery collections, offering connoisseurs a glittering world of fantasy – Fabergé x Game of Thrones High Jewellery Collection.
The designs borrow elements from the dramatic sets, costumes, characters and the otherworldly landscape of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Each creation has been inspired by orphan-turned-warrior Daenerys Targaryen’s incredible journey, her passion for her dragons, her ruthless pursuit of the Iron Throne and her ability to use jewellery to reflect her power. The first chapter, called Dragon, features five designs, with each creation limited to just 10 collectible pieces. Black and red – the Targaryen house colours – are predominantly featured.
The Flame Egg Transformable Pendant showcases skilfully designed flamelike shapes delicately set with white diamonds. A visual nod to the dragon is interwoven via the arrow-like tail, which trails from the egg. This tail can be detached, as can the egg, to create a versatile necklace. The matching Dragon Tail Earrings mimic the articulated chain of the necklace.
The Transformable Ear Cuff and Choker are designed in an interconnected style. A pear-cut, responsibly sourced Gemfields Mozambican ruby is set in a rose gold flame in the dragon’s mouth.
Characterising powerful femininity, the Dragon Ear Cuff features pearcut Gemfields Mozambican rubies radiating alongside pink sapphires. The diamond spikes mimic the dragon wing wrapping around, with the dragon itself protectively arching over the ear.
The Transformable Bracelet and Ring are an intricate and articulated creation, where a dragon wraps around the finger and then breathes gemstone set fire, which bursts into a statement bracelet. The bracelet is adorned with colourful gemstones, including Gemfields rubies, pink and yellow sapphires and brown and white diamonds. The ring and bracelet, which are connected via a chain, can be detached from each other and worn individually.

Parure Gold complexion was first launched in 2009. Back then, it already combined the properties of make-up and good skincare. However, with the latest version, Guerlain reinvents this iconic foundation in an 85% rejuvenating skincare-based formula.
At the heart of its composition, created solely with naturalorigin skincare actives, is the white peony, showcased in every dimension from the root to the petal. The flower petal extract acts on the key factors of youth, namely: skin barrier strengthening, hydration and comfort. The root extract – a genuine radiance revealer – makes it possible to obtain an incredibly even complexion and perfect skin texture. Further, a natural-origin mineral filter effectively fights photo-ageing caused by UV rays, offering ultimate skin protection.
Enriched with a hint of 24-carat gold, Parure Gold Skin Matte foundation’s fluid, compact and cushion textures lend your skin an impeccable glow without compromising comfort – no transfer and 24-hour wear with a luminous matte finish. An array of 18 shades is available, more extensive than the previous line.
Reflecting the hint of gold in the formula is the elegant golden-capped bottle made from delicately frosted, transparent glass that is adorned by the product name in golden lettering. The launch is accompanied by the release of a kabuki brush, which presents a new application ritual. Designed ethically, with short synthetic bristles and a classy mahogany-coloured, satin-finish wood handle, it facilitates precise application for a seamless finish.

Alash science expert since 1967, Lancôme merges its skin and lash care expertise to break new ground in the domain of premium mascara. Le 8 Hypnôse combines the lash-revitalising force of eight amino acids concentrated inside a 91% caring black balm, 5% shea butter and 0% wax volumising composition. With the elimination of wax, the re-engineered formula can be easily removed, with no deposit left under the eyes. Further, it’s said that you can achieve visibly strengthened and denser-looking lashes in four weeks. It also offers a solution to women’s common mascara concerns, such as lash loss at removal. The global campaign for Lancôme’s first serum-infused volumising mascara stars two house ambassadors, Amanda Seyfried and Zendaya.
The product, from formula to packaging, has been well thought out. Standing for the number of different types of amino acids, the symbolism of its namesake – Le 8 Hypnôse – is woven into every feature. Marking a design first, both the pure glass bottle and matching ergonomic brush are carved in a figure of the number eight. It also references the virtuous circularity of its 15% recycled glass; the cap is also recyclable, and the wand has a vegetal-origin fibre brush.
Treat your lashes to this three-step luxury ritual: first, apply Lancôme’s fortifying Lash Revitalizing Serum, followed by Cils Booster XL primer for augmented length, volume and curl impact. Complete with Le 8 Hypnôse.
Designed for equally effortless application yet sculpted results is the Hypnôse Nude Sculptural eyeshadow palette. Its creamy wet formula provides an easily buildable combination of highly pigmented nude shades.
Lancôme presents Le 8 Hypnôse, a unique serum-infused mascara enriched with revitalising elements for luscious, long lashes.
It’s time to heal your skin from the end-of-the-year celebrations and start afresh. Melissa Nazareth explores skincare habits and products to include in your daily routine.
There’s no denying that the festive season takes its toll on our skin; poor sleep thanks to late-night parties, dehydration from lack of water intake, poor nutrition or a diet loaded with sugar. While we don’t regret having fun and making merry, we believe balance is everything. Incorporate these skincare practices and products into your daily routine for a healthy and good-looking complexion.
Who says beauty is skin-deep? A balanced diet is the foundation of good skin. It’s not just what you wear on the outside but also how you nourish from the inside. Eating foods rich in omega-3 acids, which are present in oily fish, has a host of benefits. Omega-3 acids hydrate, retain moisture and reduce inflammation. Fatty fish is also high in vitamin E, an antioxidant, and zinc, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Other superfoods include avocados, tomatoes and bell peppers, all rich in vitamin C, which brightens your skin. Broccoli is rich in vitamin A, which is good for healing and repairing, and green tea is packed with antioxidants. You can also opt for different types of nuts and seeds that abound with zinc, vitamins and minerals.
We can’t stress enough how important it is to hydrate, especially if you’re involved in some form of physical activity, which has its benefits. Drinking water helps refresh your skin, lending it a natural glow. Further, it improves elasticity – more elasticity, less chances of wrinkles, fine lines, puffiness and sagging – and fosters collagen production, offering your skin a more youthful, radiant appearance. It also maintains your skin’s pH balance. Dry skin means enlarged pores, which are easily clogged by pollutants, makeup and dirt, leading to blemishes, acne and pimples. Hydration plumps up your skin, shrinking the pores and making them less likely to clog.
The benefits of exercise on the skin are highly underrated. Physical activity improves blood circulation, which nourishes and repairs cells, causing your skin to glow and look healthy and younger. The effects continue long after your workout session, which is a plus. Exercise is also known to facilitate lymphatic circulation and drainage, which flushes toxins out of your body; the lymphatic system balances fluid levels. There are many indirect benefits, too: skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis are triggered by stress, and exercise is a stress-buster – however, it’s not a substitute for medication. While there are studies that show these skin conditions can worsen due to excessive sweating and clogged pores resulting from exercise, it shouldn’t stop you from hitting the gym or running a few miles – nothing that a good shower and cleansing routine can’t fix.
Cleanse. Tone. Moisturise. Repeat – follow this in the morning before you leave your home and at night before you go to bed. Cleansing rids your pores of any traces of make-up, dirt, sweat and oil built up during the day. Toning removes any sneaky impurities that might have been left behind after cleansing, balances your skin, which may have been stripped of moisture during the cleaning process, and hydrates, refreshes, soothes and primes. Choose your toner based on your skin type and needs. For instance, dry skin would benefit from a hydrating, exfoliating toner and acne-prone skin from an alcohol-free toner with salicylic acid. Topical salicylic acid treats acne by unclogging pores allowing pimples to shrink, as well as reducing swelling and redness. It also helps to get rid of dead skin cells.
Moisturising is the last step. It pays off to invest in good day and night moisturisers. The former protects against UV rays and other damaging factors and the latter repairs and regenerates skin cells. Seal the deal with a final layer of sunscreen during the day – very important!
Under-eye creams and patches are something to swear by. The skin around the eyes is delicate and hence, the first to show signs of ageing. Using eye creams and patches twice a day helps reduce dark circles, puffiness and fine lines. Facial masks are another extra care option to have in your beauty arsenal. There are various types depending on your requirements –moisturising masks for dry skin, clay masks for oily skin, skin tightening, brightening masks and much more. Typically layered under your moisturiser, serums supplement your skin with the good stuff. These days, hyaluronic acid-based serums have become the rage. Naturally produced by our bodies, hyaluronic acid facilitates water retention and lubrication. Hyaluronic acid-based serums supplement elasticity, repair and heal, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and scars. While serums usually contain a bunch of ingredients, including topical antioxidants, retinol, hyaluronic acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) and peptides, there are serums focusing on specific needs, from hydrating and brightening to reparative and renewing. A caveat: most serums can be used daily without causing any irritation to the skin. However, they have acids involved, so it’s best to consult your dermatologist before you use them, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Dar Wafa is the latest spa to hit the island’s wellness scene. But, Liz O’Reilly discovered that it is more than a spa, it is a surprising oasis of tranquillity in the heart of the bustling Adliya district.
Set on the crossroads opposite Fuddruckers, the big ochreorange villa immediately imparts a sense of calm as you walk through the massive, intricate blue doors which, though made here in Bahrain, give a sense of a Medieval Moroccan fortress. The reception area is darkened with deep blue walls and woven lamps hanging from the ceiling as scented candles light the air.
Separated into distinct areas for the various treatment types, I am almost sorry that I have not chosen to experience the Hammam as I catch sight of the Moroccan bath rooms with their traditional Moroccan tiled floors and brass buckets, everything here is done in the classic authentic manner. There are two individual Hammam spaces and a larger group room –I immediately vow to come back with a party of friends.
Beyond the Hammams is the big surprise – a gorgeous tranquil courtyard, complete with pool (there’s even an inflatable camel to bring the fun) which leads onto a stunning rooftop where loungers, floor seating, brass and floaty sheers give a luxurious desert camp feel. This area is available for party use and I, again, begin making plans for a girls’ night.
It’s on this rooftop, with the sounds of Adliya seeming to disappear below, that I am served a delicious Moroccan breakfast of tasty breads with honey and jams, cut fruit and hard-boiled eggs topped with a dusting of cumin, all washed down with hot, sweet, minty tea. I could quite easily stay here all day – and perhaps will at some time in the future – but, for now, I am happy to head downstairs and get down to business.
Therapist Pamela leads me to the massage rooms, where décor and flooring are more Bahraini in feel, and introduces me to Dar Wafa’s signature – a hot stone massage with a twist. After the hot stones, the body is encased in hot towels. Usually, I would request special attention to my shoulders – like many of us who work at computers, this is an area in which I hold knots and tension –but today, fresh from a weekend of birthday partying, Pamela immediately homes in on my lower back, lower legs and ankles. I’m not as young as I was and enthusiastic, if somewhat inept, dancing has wreaked havoc. Without being asked, Pamela applies the hot stones with just the right amount of pressure to ease my aching muscles and loosen the cramping in my lower back. The delightful scent of lemongrass oil fills the room and her gentle but firm ministrations are just what the doctor ordered. The application of hot towels to finish the treatment seems to confirm that my muscles have indeed been truly pampered and, as I rise from the bed, I stand straighter and virtually ache-free. Next, we move to a second treatment room – if you visit, look out for the wallpaper, it is seriously funky – and I stretch out ready for my facial. Pamela gets to work using products from Docteur Renaud Paris, beginning with a tonic and swiftly moving on to a calming chamomile emulsion. My facial skin is pretty sensitive and the application of the creamy, cool mixture using a large, soft brush feels very comforting. Pamela applies a calming concentrate and eye cream and then uses a machine to very gently exfoliate my complexion and aid the potions in their work. At first I was a little worried about this part of the treatment. As I mentioned, my skin is very sensitive and exfoliation can easily leave me with red marks and bruises. However, my concerns proved baseless, so gentle was the movement that my face was able to drink in all the goodness of the products without a problem.
Steam was used to open my pores and, with the above-mentioned sensitivity in mind, Pamela used a gentle suction to remove any remaining impurities rather than the standard extraction method. And we finished off with a cold laser wand massage to close my pores. This felt amazing and overall, my skin was left refreshed and super soft.
Moving into the hair salon, I was struck by another change of décor, this time to art deco style with pink velvet upholstered chairs and more wonderful wallpaper.
Stylist Jane planned a Nashi treatment for my dry locks and mixed in additional argan oil to help the hair mask do its job. First I was shampooed then the treatment was applied and covered with a plastic cap. As I sat under warming heat lamps to activate the premium ingredients, Pamela returned, along with colleague Manu, and the two of them got to work on my nails.
My finger nails were clipped and filed before being painted a bright, dashing red, and my feet were scrubbed to remove hard skin before my nails were clipped and cleaned.
With my nails looking spotless, Jane removed my hair cover and rinsed away the treatment before blow drying my locks into a smooth, shiny crown. I have to say, my tresses looked and smelled fabulous and even a week later, blow drying is still much easier than before with no frizziness thanks to the Nashi smoothing effect.
By now, I was ready to leave but also sad to go. Dar Wafa, from the floor tiles to the doors, from the brass accents to the vibrant colours and from the range of luxurious treatments to the gorgeous outdoor spaces, is more an experience than a location. You can go for a whole day and enjoy various treatments, pop in for a quick blow dry, gather a group of friends for lunch on the rooftop. The possibilities are endless.
For more information or to book an appointment, please call Dar Wafa on 3222 9925.

@dessangebahrainMax Mara Resort 2023 collection brings a narrative of naïve love accompanied by unique Portuguese artistic expressions. Striking designs for independent and passionate women.
The Italian luxury brand Max Mara has been presenting its Resort collections in different locations and for the 2023 creations, Lisbon was the chosen spot to showcase the new pieces. The contrast between lush green gardens and the concrete architecture of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal’s capital was the perfect scenario to reveal the transitional collection. Artistic manifestations were also the inspiration for the Resort 2023 concept. Natália Correia, a Portuguese intellectual, poet and social activist, is celebrated and revived by this collection. The Lenços de Namorados do Minho, which means handkerchiefs of love, are a Portuguese romantic tradition and a symbol of a conquest ritual. They are a poetic and artistic form used by girls of marriageable age who used to embroider squares of linen or cotton with messages and love symbols to win the heart of their beloved. Floor-sweeping dresses in taffeta fabric and pleats are the perfect medium to express the dramatic melody of traditional Fado music.
Hearts, flowers, ribbons and doves rendered in the sophisticated naïf style (a type of art that is conceived and produced by artists with no specific academic preparation) of the Lenços de Namorados appear in Max Mara’s prints and dressy crystal brooches. Working with local artisans, the brand created T-shirts inspired by the motifs of this tradition, carrying Max Mara’s own lines of love, which, in accordance with custom, begin with a heartfelt entreaty to reach the object of the sender’s affections. Vai Lenço Feliz (Go Happy Handkerchief) is the Resort 2023 message that delivers passion, happiness and power, so intrinsic to Max Mara’s beliefs.
Well-known in the events and creative projects execution market, Leslie Garduque, Founder and Managing Director of Media Circuit, spoke to OHLALA about her successful company and life in Bahrain.
OHLALA – You celebrate 10 years of your company Media Circuit this year. What made you start it and have you gone as far as you expected?
Leslie Garduque - I’ve always been entrepreneurial, idealistic and ambitious. Ten years ago, after being an employee for several years, I had this burning desire to do something on my own. I’ve worked in a lot of agencies and SMEs and the questions that kept running in my mind were ‘If they can do it, why can’t I?’ ‘If they can create a brand and make it work, why can’t I?’ So, after a lot of pondering, I thought I needed to do it. I wanted to try and see if I could make it work. Was I afraid of failing? Oh yes! But I was more afraid of regrets and all the ‘what-ifs’ that would haunt me for the rest of my life. We will be entering our 10th year in April 2023 and I never expected to come this far. Like every other business owner, I hoped to thrive, but I never really thought we would still be around 10 years after opening. I’ve got to say, this was beyond my expectations!
OHLALA – Can you highlight the best moments of company life during these years? What do you think are Media Circuit’s differentials and strongest skills?
Leslie - The company has a lot of best moments. Most of the time, these moments are linked to difficult projects that we’ve managed to complete beautifully and successfully. The greatest ones are those times when we’re all bone-tired and weary and then a client comes up to us and commends us for a job well done. Hearing those gratifying words makes all the hard work and sleepless nights worthwhile. The team is comprised of like-minded and extremely hardworking individuals who have positive mindsets and who don’t dwell much on problems but instead on solutions. After handling a gazillion projects in the last decade, I think I have to say our key role, more than being project managers or event organisers is as problem-solvers. We need to provide solutions as fast and effectively as we can to whatever problem/issue/concern will arise in the course of the project.
OHLALA – You are a woman of many talents and have done many projects. However, what are the ones you liked the most?
Leslie - We offer a lot of marketing services but the service that I particularly love to get involved with is events. I’m very hands-on with every aspect of event management. I love conceptualising and creating event plans. And I especially love it when plans get approved and we get to execute them successfully.
OHLALA – You and your team put together amazing events and beautiful displays. It seems all glamorous, but what actually happens behind the scene?
Leslie – Five-letter word: CHAOS (lol). People only see beautifully finished products. But behind those glamorous events or setups are tons of hard work, arguments, revisions, stress, anxiety, tears, mini-heart attacks (laugh), sleepless nights and Thermos after Thermos of coffee and power drinks.
OHLALA – Sometimes, you handle different projects simultaneously and deal with last-minute changes. Can you tell us your secret to keeping them happening successfully?
Leslie - Three things: (1) Presence of mind. There’s a bigger reason why we’re hired to manage a project/event, it’s because the client will throw everything at us (the good, the bad, the ugly) and we’re expected to quickly cope/adjust and solve whatever was thrown our way. (2) Composure. Clients panic, we can’t, at least we try not to show that we are panicking inside too. We are there to reassure them that everything is going smoothly (even when we know our installation is running late and our caterer did a double booking). No matter what is thrown our way, we need to put on a smile and reassure the client that we can handle it. (3) Grace under pressure. We cannot break down and fall apart. Even when stress levels are high, we should be able to manage projects calmly and properly.
OHLALA – As an entrepreneur leading a company that thrives in its sector, how do you see the importance of having women leading businesses in different fields?
Leslie - It’s great to see fellow women leading and excelling in different fields, especially in this part of the world where women weren’t previously given the same opportunities as men. I don’t think I’m a feminist but I believe in gender equality, not that men and women are equal in every sense, because I think there are things that men are physically equipped to do better than women and vice-versa. But at least equality in economic and social opportunities and resources. I think that for a society or community to thrive, gender discrimination should not be encouraged. I’m glad that Bahrain is taking steps to empower women in society.
OHLALA – You love cycling. How did this passion start?
Leslie - Blame it on the pandemic. For the first time in the last decade, I finally had spare time to adopt a hobby. And when all that we were allowed to do were outdoor activities, I thought I’d pick a sport that I used to love, cycling. I’m not really a hardcore cyclist but I do it as my form of workout – and well, it works!
OHLALA – What do you like most about Bahrain?
Leslie - The freedom and the convenience. Most people have the impression that because we’re in the Middle East, we have a lot of lifestyle restrictions. I used to think that until I got here 15 years ago. I then realised Bahrain is not what people thought it was, what I thought it was. It’s an open country which provides its citizens and residents with many lifestyle choices. The country is not restrictive and embraces all religions and cultures making it a mini-cosmopolitan centre. I think Bahrain is a country that unconsciously grows on you. I’m the perfect example, it grew on me.
“We cannot break down and fall apart. Even when stress levels are high, we should be able to manage projects calmly and properly.”

With the new year, you might feel the time is right to give your home a fresh look and what could be better than going for the latest market trend: curves?
Trends are everywhere, from new gadgets to construction and when it comes to home interiors, it’s no different. But how long do interior trends usually last? Studies show that they typically span a decade or two, if they are strong and appealing enough. Decorating a home is not like changing your wardrobe twice a year. Homes have the specific purpose of keeping us warm and safe. We like to go back to a place that is familiar – we tend to build a nest. This means we actually appreciate finding our personal space unchanged. We create memories and associate them with the rooms and elements that transform our houses into homes.
While in the ‘90s, minimalism was only a niche for the likes of architects and experts, in the 2000s, thanks to more affordable products (from places such as IKEA), minimalism spread into the majority of modern homes. For more than 20 years, product developers, architects and interior designers have been favouring simplicity, sleek lines and neutral palettes over ornamentation, busy patterns, pendants and swirls. Even in some cultures that embrace a more vivid style, minimalism has found its way into people’s personal spaces.
As per the dictionary definition, minimalism is a lifestyle involving a reduction or simplification of one’s material possessions that frees one to lead a more intentional, purposeful and spiritual existence. That’s what has been happening in our houses (and lives) for the past 20 years. It’s worth remembering that trends pass, so we opt for what is simpler and more established. However, it might be time for a big change with a new home interior choice that’s all the rage: curves!
Curves are one of the latest interior design elements that have been gaining popularity for a while and can be incorporated into different styles. We can finally embody playful round and arched elements into our homes, that are currently full of straight lines, sleek designs and squared shapes. Rounded lines bring joy and can add an exciting touch. This trend emphasises softness, fluffy cushions, comfortable shapes and silhouettes that are at the same time bold and comfy.
If you’re not convinced that you like round shapes, you could introduce a few pieces to your décor and see if you enjoy the effect.
Start with small, simple accents like coffee tables, ottomans and chairs. You could also give wallpapers a try, wall stickers or circular mirrors.
Test The Water: Purchase small items that can easily mix and match with the elements you already have at home. Think about the colour pattern you follow or fill that empty space that has been calling for something and that will benefit from a round shape.
Then re-think your living room – the centre of your home. A cosy curvy couch could definitely be the main protagonist of the space. Imagine sitting on a soft cloud, just like cuddling up in a warm hug. It’s also time to buy a big, rounded rug, a bold statement that brings the rest of the elements together.
Keep In Mind: The space will have a different flow compared to a room with a square or sectional sofa. A rounded sofa cannot be pushed against the wall. It’s better to account for some extra room to be able to walk round it. If you want to introduce this kind of curvilinear piece, you need to understand that they take up more space and are a bit more cumbersome.
You’re ready to embrace it for life and are free to play harder: it’s time to introduce built-in statements like round showers, built-in bookcases or archways. We already have sharp-edged lives – it’s time to smooth out the corners and sweeten the setting (ambience).
Do Not: Houses still need to be practical and store as much as we need since we are inclined to accumulate. Don’t go too far: rounded walls are fine in a shower or a statement-decorative element. Do keep in mind: 90-degrees walls are the most functional and practical way to organise our stuff. Standard rectangle-shaped furniture doesn’t fit against a curved wall. Incorporate it, but always in moderation.
“Thanks to its numerous natural atolls, the Maldives is one of the world’s primary destinations for ocean life experiences.”
There are few locations on the planet that measure up to the breath-taking beauty of the Maldives. This ancient island nation is renowned for its sapphire blue waters, powdery, white beaches, green tropical forests and golden sunshine. This month, thanks to Nova Maldives, OHLALA spent four magical days and nights in this extraordinary part of the world.
Positioned Southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres from mainland Asia, The Maldives is an archipelagic country, formed by 26 natural atolls, consisting of 1,192 islands. Nova is located on South Ari Atoll, a mere 25-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport. This scenic flight, although very comfortable, was too short to take in the full splendour of the surrounding views. By the time we touched down on the clear waters alongside the wooden jetty, we were relaxed and ready for our refreshing island adventure.
To ensure the most comfortable and relaxing of experiences, Nova offers an assortment of accommodation types to suit all tastes. From cosy Beach Villas to a two-bedroom Beach Residence complete with private pool, the island resort has something for every requirement. We were happy to be housed in Beach Villas complete with Jacuzzies. These uber comfy and stylish locations provided home bases for us to kick-back and unwind whenever we desired. Overlooking the open ocean, it was a pleasure to simply sit and absorb the view from our private decks or from the temperature controlled Jacuzzies.
Complete with king-sized beds, plush bedding, in-room high speed internet, flatscreen HD televisions, along with Apple TV, we wanted for nothing over the four days in our lavish accommodations.
During our time on the island, we were thoroughly spoilt by our hosts, not least through the abundance of delicious dishes we were served throughout our stay.
Soul Kitchen’s wide-ranging, mouth-watering menu is rivalled only by the incredible views on offer and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute we spent in this friendly and relaxing environment. Open from morning to night, this superb eatery offers generous buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Flames is another ‘must mention’ restaurant. This fine-dining location offers some of the freshest and most succulent ingredients you could hope to find on your plate.
Featuring everything from local fish, seafood and meat to delectable vegetarian-based options, the talented chefs ensure every dish is grilled or prepared to absolute perfection.
Mizu is a picturesque overwater teppanyaki restaurant that offers a firstclass menu of ocean delights. Pair this exceptional food with enchanting Indian Ocean views and you have an almost unrivalled dining location.
Fortunate enough to experience the culinary magnificence this venue offers, we were taken by the delightful tropical flavours, created from fresh local ingredients and served by the most attentive and hospitable of staff members.
A little later in the evenings, the nights truly came alive. The vibrant Wink provided all guests the opportunity to meet their fellow visitors, to hold lively conversations while enjoying cold beverages or a late meal. At this venue, we experienced some of the very finest hookah we have ever sampled, as well as some foot-stomping local rhythms. As music lovers, we were truly impressed by the talent and energy exhibited by The Kabans. This local cabana band rocked the crowd with their lively music and spirited performances, often causing us to get to bed far later than originally intended.
Thanks to its numerous natural atolls, the Maldives is one of the world’s primary destinations for ocean life experiences. The diverse local flora and fauna includes sea turtles, dolphins, whale sharks, manta rays and beautiful coral reefs that are home to thousands of species of fish. During our unforgettable stay, we were lucky enough to experience various ocean adventures in one of the most breath-taking aquatic environments.
There’re moments in your life when you must stop and appreciate the adventure of it all. This was certainly the case as we headed off on our Indian Ocean sunset trip. Along with the already spectacular nature of our surroundings, we were privileged to spot dolphins playing in the water less than 50 metres from our boat. Witnessing a flawlessly beautiful sunset whilst appreciating these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is a moment we won’t soon forget. Nova is a natural island and the sea’s gentle giants such as whale sharks and manta rays reside in the surrounding waters all year round. We had a further ocean-bound adventure in the form of a sunset fishing excursion. Golden trevally, red bass, coral trout, rainbow runners, reef fish, along with a variety of tuna, are all sought after prizes in these waters. Whether you want to be actively involved in the fishing process or simply relax and enjoy the views from the water, the choice is yours.
Aquaholics is the name of Nova’s watersport centre. If you’re looking for excitement, relaxation, outstanding ocean views or the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local marine life, this is the place for you.
Aquaholics offers snorkelling options along with an extensive range of scuba diving experiences. An array of beginner and advanced courses as well as private diving experiences, of various lengths and makeups, are available. A broad range of equipment is also on offer to rent. We got to experience two hours of snorkelling in the almost unbelievable underwater world around Nova. The vibrant colours combined with the warm waters and abundance of sea life, including whale sharks and manta rays, made the entire experience seem somewhat surreal and it was tough to leave this submerged Shangri-la at the end of the adventure.
One of our favourite moments at Nova was the Eskape Spa experience. On offer at this idyllic venue is an assortment of massages and treatments, specially designed to relax and rejuvenate the body and the senses. The Maldivian Ocean Dream Massage is the signature massage, and it’s easy to understand why. As we indulged in this stress-stripping activity, on a tropical island, with the promise of more luxury and adventure to come, we couldn’t help but wonder if traveling experiences could get any better than this.
As difficult as it was to leave Nova Maldives at the end of our stay, we took with us a wealth of unforgettable memories that we’ll always treasure. We would like to thank all Nova staff members for both their kindness and attentiveness. They were the heart and soul of this one-of-a-kind adventure.

Wellness retreats have become a popular alternative to customary luxury vacationing. Lawson Misquitta explored some of the best places around the globe to relax and take care of your health.
Every year, it could be considered necessary for us to take a step back and take some time off from our hectic lifestyles to allow us the chance to relax and recharge.
Spas play a special role in providing a space where we can go and soothe our bodies and minds. They offer therapies that promote physical, mental and spiritual healing, which are essential aspects that contribute towards a healthy lifestyle. A wellness retreat is usually structured around providing guests with a relaxing holiday that includes the benefits of a wonderful spa but also pays specific attention to helping them improve their overall health and well-being.
Wellness retreats aren’t a particularly new phenomenon, but in recent years they have comprehensively developed into a diverse offering spread across the globe, with specialist retreats working to provide a reprieve from modern life’s trials and tribulations. The retreats offer a unique and valuable venue for individuals, couples, families and groups to seek a healthy refuge from the fast-paced lifestyles so prevalent in contemporary society. At these relaxing and empowering havens, guests can nourish and revitalise their bodies, minds and psyches to attain or regain elevated levels of personal wellness.
Well-being is innately personal; hence different locations offer choices that enable guests to tailor the experience to suit themselves and their needs.

Iceland is the least-populated country in Europe. Abundant natural beauty is found around every corner owing to its unparalleled scenery, wideopen spaces and vast untouched wilderness areas. Iceland sits atop active volcanic regions at the edge of the Arctic Circle. Visitors can discover active volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, glaciers, ice fields and fjords as part of the natural terrain.
Iceland’s location on the top of the world also ensures it’s among the best places to witness the northern lights or aurora borealis. These spectacular celestial wonders are commonly seen from September to mid-April. The country is equally rugged and tranquil and serves as a perfect sanctuary from daily distractions back home, making Iceland perfect for a wellness retreat.
A remarkable advantage of Iceland’s geothermal nature are the naturally heated pools found across the country, each situated in a unique environment, making them a must-visit for first-time travellers. With centuries-old proven healing treatments through Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, India is one of the most popular global destinations for a wellness break.
Ayurveda has become an inspirational part of wellness tourism. It combines Ayur (life) and Veda (knowledge), which translates to the science of life or the science of healing. Ayurveda seeks to combine lifestyle with dietetic modifications which are aimed at stimulating the constitution of our bodies to bring about balance, which further allows individuals to learn the importance of self-care or self-healing.

Ihave always loved Masso but I must confess I have not ventured to that corner of Adliya since Covid sent us all running for the safety of our homes. So, I am interested to see what has changed and what’s stayed the same.
The Provençale-style interiors are as welcoming as ever, crisp linens and sparkling glasses and silverware let you know that you are in a high-end establishment while outside a newish area resembles an Italian market street with fairy lights adding to the ambience as guest chatter and laughter fills the air.
At our table, home-baked focaccia with sundried tomatoes, bread buns with olive butter swirls and grissini all served with a sundried tomato paste set the scene for the evening. Each mouthful of bread tastes better than the last and we have to stop ourselves over indulging, mindful of the feast to follow.
The first of the ‘Small Bites’ to the table is Smoked Short-Rib Croquettes with Black Truffle Dip. These have a crispy coating and the meat is meltin-the-mouth tender. The truffle flavour is gentle, not overpowering, and perfectly complements the almost gamey richness of the beef.
Mushroom Arancini is the first standout for me on a menu which looks set to offer a whole range of excellence. The crunchy exterior of the rice balls yields to a beautifully comforting interior of mushroomy, truffley goodness topped by mushroom puree and embraced in the hug of a cheesy sauce. The perfect combination of flavours and textures, I could easily eat the whole portion myself but these dishes are made for sharing and my dining companion is equally impressed.
Up next, the Aubergine Salad makes an interesting appearance encased in a domed rye flour cracker decorated with daubs of goat cheese mousse, sun-dried tomatoes and mint leaves. General Manager Enrico gleefully demolishes the dome at the table to expose the goodness below. The aubergine caviar, so familiar in this part of the world, smokily roasted and mixed with olive oil and the oh-so-important aromatics that impart its distinctive flavour, is accompanied by a delicious mix of edamame, green beans, sugar snaps, goat cheese crumble and sesame dressing. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the freshness and bursting flavours of the vegetables is one of the things that puts Masso in a class enjoyed by just a few restaurants on the island. Executive Chef Steeven Gilles informs us that the vegetables are all imported from Europe and, in fact, virtually all his ingredients are sourced overseas to ensure that outstanding quality.
The one notable exception is a dish that is a complete revelation to both myself and my dining companion – an avowed foodie. It’s Creamy Burrata with marinated cherry tomatoes, tomato sorbet and basil oil. And the big difference here is that this is actually Bahraini burrata, made in the Kingdom from a herd farmed in Zallaq. I have to confess that I didn’t know this deliciousness even existed. Ridiculously creamy with a light, buttery flavour, the outside has a delicate firmness while the inside veritably oozes and, without wishing to offend, my dining companion describes it as ‘an almost religious experience’. I don’t think I need to say more!
Soon Enrico is back at our table with an enormous baked seabass which smells absolutely divine. Ever the showman, he makes a performance of rolling back the skin in one single flourish and then expertly debones it at the table before serving us the delicate flesh. Accompanied by an exceptional sauce of basil, saffron, rocket and butter, I have seldom eaten something so simple and at the same time so deeply satisfying. The fish is cooked to perfection, the flesh firm but yielding and the sauce is so expertly judged that there is absolutely no need for further seasoning, which for me is very unusual. Alongside the fish, we are served Truffle and Mushroom Tortellini and I am in a small corner of heaven as I sample the al dente pasta drenched in a delicate mushroom cream and basil oil. If ever two flavours were the perfect combination, these are it. The truffle lends the dish a very considered sense of luxury and I am sorry that I do not have space for more than a few of these delicious small parcels – each a complete gastronomic journey in itself. We are spoilt for choice on the desserts and opt to share the one dish that, if it’s on the menu, is always my first choice. Crème Brulee is one of those concoctions that, alone, can test the calibre of the cook. Get it wrong and the cream separates but get it right and it is oh so very, very good. Unsurprisingly, as with absolutely everything else we have eaten this evening, Chef Paul Gardin, Masso Executive Pastry Chef's version of this dish is spot on. The vanilla subtle but making its presence felt, the burnt sugar topping crunchy and sweet. Yes, we are already full and planning just a spoonful each… famous last words. The food at Masso silenced two women who had not seen each other in months. A higher accolade, I cannot give. I strongly recommend that you try it for yourself.

AS LONG-TIME FANS OF THE BMW BRAND, OHLALA WAS DELIGHTED TO SPEND THE DAY IN THE 2023 740I LUXURY SALOON.
BMW has firmly established itself as a car super brand. This vehicle manufacturing powerhouse has become one of the world’s most recognisable labels thanks to more than a century of premium car production. They have tirelessly pushed the envelope in all areas of design and delivery, developing dynamic and sporty vehicles jam packed with high-performance technology, cutting-edge innovations, and a vast array of both driver assistance and safety features. This month, OHLALA was fortunate enough to get its collective hands on the new BMW 740i, compliments of the exceptional team at Euro Motors.
Approaching the 740i for the first time, we were struck by the car’s potent presence. Exuding a sense of exclusivity, refinement and pure power, this latest creation from BMW is nothing less than a picture of aesthetic perfection.
The front end of the new 740i is almost menacing in appearance, looking as if it wants to growl at you. The combination of its illuminated, chrome BMW kidney grille sitting proudly as its centrepiece, along with its twopiece, split crystal headlight units, ensures there is no doubt this car is a proud member of the luxury segment.
The forceful presence of this premium saloon continues at the flanks with its sleek yet powerful lines running from tip to trunk. Light tinted glass, black side window trims, aluminium panels, black door handles, along with 20-inch aluminium wheels, are all fitted as standard on the 740i, further contributing toward the car’s imposing demeanour.
At the rear, stylish LED brake lights and a modish twin dual exhaust system provide additional touches of class to an already outstanding exterior design.
Slipping into the ultra-comfortable, supportive and multi-adjustable front seats of the 740i, we were greeted by the most luxurious and remarkable cabin we’ve experienced in a BMW saloon to date. All materials used throughout the car are of a superior quality. Combining open-pore wood, stainless steel, glass and high-end fabrics, with intricate ambient lighting elements; the 740i’s interior is sure to please even the most discerning car critics. The full-width backlit dashboard, named the Interaction Bar by the brand, combines interior lighting, decoration and operation functions. This new 7-Series model houses the striking BMW Curved Display fully digital screen grouping, now featuring additional My Modes.
“Exuding a sense of exclusivity, refinement, and pure power, this latest creation from BMW is nothing less than a picture of aesthetic perfection.”
Furthermore, the brand is fitting modern models with the exceptional multi-sensory vehicle experience, the BMW iDrive 8 Infotainment System. This latest generation exhibits major upgrades in the user interface, natural voice recognition and cloud-based machine learning. Add the latest version of the BMW Head-Up Display, along with the enhanced capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assist to the equation, and you have one of the most capable configurations available on the market. One of the more unique elements of this new 740i is the 5.5-inch touchscreens located in the door handles. These allow occupants to control their seating position, their individual climate zone, the audio system, along with the available Theatre Screen entertainment display. This magnificent 31.3-inch widescreen display provides ultra-HD quality and 5G connectivity. A standard 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkens surround sound system further enhances the audio capabilities of the car. Yet another novel design element of the 740i is the futuristic looking Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof with LED threads. Space wise, the new 740i is both longer and wider than the previous generation, meaning ample leg, shoulder and headroom for all occupants.
When it came to the on-road performance of the 740i, we were not disappointed. The 2023 model houses an Inline 6-cylinder, mild hybrid (48V), BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine. This mechanical monster generates 380hp along with 540Nm of torque. This translates to a 0-100km/h time of just 5.4 seconds and an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h.
With an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, a superb suspension system, a responsive braking system and plenty of grip on the corners, the remarkable performance of this 7-series saloon epitomises sheer driving pleasure.
The designers at BMW have ensured the new 740i is equipped as standard with an impressive range of safety and driver assistance features. These include, but are not limited to, Front Collision Mitigation, Frontal Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Tyre Pressure Warning, Driving Monitoring Alert, and a backup camera, along with a multitude of airbags located throughout the vehicle.
We loved everything about this car. From the imposing yet refined exterior design to the immaculate and futuristic look of the interior, the designers have not put a foot wrong. Add in the advanced technology, entertainment, safety and assistance systems, and you have a top contender in the luxury sedan segment.

When reading business and psychology reports, we understand the importance of planning. It has been proven that we tend to get things done and reach our objectives successfully when we actually plan first – making it specific and time/place-dependent.
According to psychologytoday.com, a series of studies from E.J. Masicampo and Roy Baumeister demonstrated that committing to a particular plan for a goal frees up cognitive resources for other pursuits. This means that in addition to helping us be more successful in achieving a specific intent, planning lets us get on with other stuff too. From the moment a plan is made to transform that one goal into reality, we make room for others to concretise. If well outlined, you can create short, medium and long-term plans and have them all working out the way you envisioned them. You just need to have a clear idea of what you want and look at it, even if it is a small project, with a plan well sketched. Lewis Carroll once said: “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will lead you there.”
Here are some of the reasons you should start planning today:
- First and foremost, planning helps you achieve your purpose.
- It helps you set your priorities.
- It makes a big task look smaller. No one should attempt to conquer a huge task directly. If you plan it and break it down, it will look like tiny bits of jobs and be more achievable.
- It makes the process clearer.
- It makes you more efficient.
- It helps you deal with crossroads and find alternatives.
- It builds your confidence.
- It helps you accept imperfections.
- It eliminates regret.
- And finally, it leads you to success. The whole meaning behind planning something is to succeed.
A new year full of possibilities is right in front of us. Have you planned what to do with the 365 days waiting for you in 2023?
Perched on the pristine coast of the Persian Gulf amongst historical royal territory, a refined fortress rises up from the earth like a beacon of joy and light to guide the way into the new generation of hospitality in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Believed to be the former heart of the Dilmun Empire, the archipelago of Bahrain is a historically diverse and colorful destination that we lend from to create Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa.
