Editor’s Letter

Ramadan Kareem As the Holy Month descends upon us we shine a spotlight on a selection of our favourite restaurants that feature special Ramadan night offerings where you can sample traditional Arabic fare. In our Ode to Oud feature, we take a journey into an opulent bouquet of perfumes where we discover the intimate secrets of Arabian fragrances and oils, showcasing our top picks of the finest this season. We then embark on a voyage into the world of Amouage in an exclusive interview with creative director, Christopher Chong. Our celebrity scoop this month, Sharon Corr, is best known as the violinplaying member of pop-rock band, The Corrs. She sits down in an exclusive interview with the Ohlala! Editor-at-Large to chat about the launch of her second solo album, The Same Sun, and how her support of equality for women remains as important to her as her music. For your monthly fashion fix indulge yourself in the Alexander McQueen Autumn-Winter 2014 collection – a wild, romantic beauty takes centrestage in Beauty And The Beast. Also turn to our style pages for a sneak preview of the Hoss Intropia collection debuting on the island and how to dress like a contemporary princess. As in the words of our columnist in her illusions of perception, let’s remember to take time to pause this month and feel our faith (whatever that may mean, personally, to you). Let us nurture it and feel the flow of profound faith deeply within our souls – not just for a few moments, or a day or two – but throughout the whole year. Kirsty Edwards-Harris Editor-in-Chief

MISS OHLALA! Escapades of a single 20-something girl... Ramadan commandments

This Ramadan I’ve decided to focus on detox, sleep and saving myself for the summer vacay. I have created a fool proof step by step guide to avoid boredom and over eating during the Holy Month, whether you are fasting or not. By now everyone living in Bahrain knows the traditional resolutions, but here are some more I have adapted in the past few years living here: Step 1 thou shalL not intoxicate thy self. No drinks, no cigs, and no coffee. One month where no harmful substances will enter my body. So goodbye dark circles under my eyes and morning after remorse. Step 2 thou shall cut carbs and sugar from diet. This may be harder than step one, but moving all our meals to the evening also means needing to give up on all those tasty evils - if you want to have a perfect bikini body by Eid that is. Remember sugar is the devil. Try avoid going to too many Ramadan tents because you will be tempted and also will be spending excessively. Step 3 thou shall move thy bootie. It is easy to get lazy in Ramadan and in this heat, one must make bigger efforts to move. I find that shopping is a great form of cardio so a mall a day is a fun activity but do pace yourself when buying because you have a whole month to choose your holiday outfits. Another fun activity is night swimming. It may be too hot to splash around during the day but at night it’s a fun way to beat the heat and keep moving. Of course finding some Pilates, spinning or whatever classes you enjoy is a must – this will also hold you back from over eating if you are already committed to a workout. 26

OHLALA!

Step 4 thou shall catch up on reading. You know all those books on your shelf collecting dust? Well now that you have some down time pick ‘em up and read them- no excuses. Step 5 thou shall start watching a new TV show. You always feel left out when Game of Thrones conversation start heating up and you haven’t ever seen an episode? Well now you have plenty of time to watch it from the beginning and join in! Personally I’m going to catch up on my Grey’s Anatomy - there will be tears this Ramadan. Step 6 thou shall go to the cinema as much as possible. One thing we have a lot of in Bahrain are cinemas and they usually have quite a variety of new movies to choose from. And what better way to spend an evening then watching a 3D sci-fi or a cute rom com (even if all the good bits are censored). Step 7 thou shall redecorate. Now is the time to spend more time at home and do all those things we should have done months ago. Change the curtains, stick those fun design stickers on your bathroom wall, paint your doors red… Get creative! If you follow these steps not only will you be happier but hotter too. Always works for me anyway. Ta ta for now...

The power of giving No one has ever become poorer by giving. We all could do with a little help, and this Ramadan, you can do your bit to put a smile on someone’s face.

LIVING A DREAM

Many of us look for balance. Judith Jawad – wife, mother, grandmother and entrepreneur – has seemingly found that equilibrium in her life. The founder of Artikel and a host of other ventures, talks to Ohlala!’s Karina Lazarraga to find out what it takes to succeed not just in business, but in life. How many of us can actually say this: “There isn’t anything I want to aspire to anymore. I feel fulfilled and I am content with what I have.” Judith attributes her earliest success to the influence of her parents, who modelled perseverance and hard work amidst hardship. “Early on, it was drilled into us that you have to work really hard if you want to achieve something in life. They provided a solid base for me and my siblings to pursue our different interests,” she shares. Tell us about your entrepreneurial journey... Judith Jawad: As proprietor for Galleria Sophia, Artikel and 32

OHLALA!

Tilly’s Cafe, I have built up the business over a period of 13 years though Tilly’s Cafe is only eight years old. I’m very fortunate to have the support of my husband. It all started when he needed me to set up Delifrance for Jawad Business Group 15 years ago. After two years when the business was up and running well, I wanted to start my own business – so I began Gallery Sophia, later Artikel was born and eventually, Tilly’s Cafe. Apart from your parents, who would you say is your biggest influence in life? JJ: My husband – he has an acute business acumen and the gift to look at a business and gauge if it’s going to work or not. He’s a great sounding board, he offers wonderful support, he’s level headed and humble. He’s just truly special. How do you face challenges in business? JJ: I stick to my guns. But more importantly, I have a wonderful team. It is very important if you want to succeed in business to have your team on board! Tell us about your leadership style… JJ: I have an open-door policy. I listen to my team. Their views are important and I involve them in decision making, then I take action. Women have proven that they are successful at listening

to people. There has to be respect and courtesy if one is to command loyalty. I am very lucky, I have wonderful staff on my side. What qualities do you look for when hiring people? JJ: You have to look for – and see – the passion in people, look beyond their skills. I had one staff member who stayed with me for 25 years. She started as a housekeeper in my home and became a supervisor in my store when I opened Galleria Sophia. I look for the fire within, which will fuel people into doing their very best, plus I want them to love and enjoy what they do. What career highlights do you have to date? JJ: I think I introduced colour to Bahrain. Before Artikel, there was mostly brown and beige on the island. I put colour back on the map. I also think I brought Christmas to Bahrain through the shop and I am very proud to see the locals enjoy it too. They come in with their families, look and take pictures. It just makes people happy – and that makes me happy. I try to please all tastes and cultures and I really enjoy my work. Artikel, Tilly’s Cafe and Gallery Sophia are all located at Jawad Dome, Just off the Budaiya Highway. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beyond the Boardroom Mona Almoayyed is not only a mother and a wife, she’s also a corporate and philanthropic powerhouse, as well as a force behind many altruistic pursuits. WORDS BY KARINA LAZARRAGA | IMAGE BY GEORGE MATHEW

M

eeting Mona Almoayyed, you get a sense that not only will she be sharing valuable advice – you simply get enveloped by her warmth, welcoming spirit. Don’t be mistaken about her soft side though – for Mona is a lady who means business. The only difference? She does it with a big, big heart. Of the many facets to this woman’s life, Mona fights to improve the rights of Bahraini workers – one of the causes closest to her heart, as evident through her work as the honorary patron for the Migrant Workers’ Protection Society, to help migrant workers achieve their basic human rights in accordance with internationally recognised standards. As managing director, she runs the family firm her father Yousif founded, YK Almoayyed & Sons, and sits on the board of several public companies, including the Bahrain Maritime & Mercantile International. Mona has carved a life that’s something short of extraordinary. Recently, she was awarded with the ‘Chevalier of the France’s Order of the Legion of Honour. Mona was one of four prominent Bahrainis who was given the accolade by HE Ambassador Christian Testot, France Ambassador to Bahrain, in recognition of her and her company’s invaluable support to French companies in the kingdom. She was also listed by Forbes as the twelfth Most Powerful Woman in the Arab World in 2008; ranked third Most Influential Arab Woman in Family Business in the MENA Region in 2013 and ranked eighty-sixth this year with the same title by Arabian Business Magazine. 34

OHLALA!

Mona has been quite remarkable in continuing her father’s legacy. “I love my work and I love continuing to improve what my father started 70 years ago. I want to keep his legacy and pass it on to my children. I am proud to say that as a family, we have managed to grow the company since the death of my father in 1996 by fourfold,” shares Mona. Coming from an entrepreneurial family, you would think Mona would naturally get into the family trade but she says, “When I was studying, I wasn’t too keen in getting involved in business, all I wanted to do was social work. But I eventually chose to study Business Administration because I realised I can both be in business and do charitable causes.” Her benevolent nature stems from her mother’s influence. “She is the family’s Banyan Tree; we all sit under her shadow. She is a role model for me because she is such a giving person,” Mona shares. As for her keen business acumen, she credits her late father: “He was very much ahead of his time, a good family man and he really involved me and my siblings in the business quite early on,” quips Mona. As for her career milestones, Mona is proud to have introduced to her company, a Strategic Management System called the Balanced Score Card, which centres around profitability, customer satisfaction, improving business processes and innovation. On top of these, Mona adds: “We look at employees’ happiness and the overall aspects of the business. It’s important to not go after profit alone. Running a company is like flying an airplane – everything has to function well in order for business to succeed.” To this we say, ‘Keep soaring high Mona.’

“It’s important to not go after profit alone.”

s the co-founder of 90s global sensation The Corrs, Sharon Corr is no stranger to success. From 1990 until 2006 the Irish band released five studio albums and achieved multiplatinum status that saw them topping charts and setting records all over the world. When the band decided to take a mutually agreed hiatus, many of its members pursued solo careers, with Sharon Corr releasing her own debut album – Dream Of You – in 2009. With her second solo album The Same Sun due out this September and first single, ‘Take A Minute’ already receiving favourable reviews and considerable airplay, I asked Sharon whether she came across the notorious second album syndrome whilst writing her latest recording. “To be honest, if anything this was easier than Dream Of You just because I had already done it and kind of knew what to expect. I also had a lot more I wanted to say. “This was a very organic process for me and because I love writing it was always a pleasure rather than a chore. – both for the artist and the audience – and every individual song reflects something of where I was and what I was experiencing.” With that in mind, what were the influences behind the first single, ‘Take A Minute’, a song that has a very “Karen Carpenter” feel to it, against the backdrop of a very laid back, summer sound. “It was a strange discovery for me because as a child I grew up listening to the vocals of Karen Carpenter and when we first recorded the song it was quite amazing to discover something of that sound emerging from the mike! The track does have a summer feel to it and it does fit in quite nicely for the time of year!” In many ways if ‘Take A Minute’ possesses a light and uncomplicated feel then the next planned single ‘We Could Be Lovers’ is a more immediate, earthy track that is a sultry take on forbidden love. “The main theme of ‘We Could Be Lovers’ is about infidelity from a woman’s perspective. Most of the songs about love are from the man’s position and I wanted to write something that had relevance for all us women. “It’s a completely different scenario for a woman – especially one with children – and I wanted to explore that with this song.” On the subject of gender differences, does she feel there is a certain disparity among the sexes when it comes to the music industry? “I think there are divisions created by gender in many areas of life not just within the music industry. “I am an ambassador for the Ending Poverty Starts With Women campaign, which seeks to highlight that treating women as equals is key to tackling global poverty. It’s a charity that is close to my heart as it calls on men and women to use the power of their voices to make a difference. Regrettably, on the world stage, poverty has a female face.” One aspect of modern life that has evolved since Sharon and her siblings first made it big is the rise of the Internet and the phenomenon that is social media. Is she a big fan and is it now a prerequisite for any aspiring new artist? “That’s a difficult question. There’s no

doubting that social media is an important component of modern music – in fact in many ways it has an impact on most aspects of life – but I’m not a big advocate of it’s allconsuming potential. “Of course I use Facebook and Twitter but I’m not one to broadcast my every move on these platforms and I sometimes question why people need to dilute an experience by introducing posts or tweets to an event. It has its place but too much of anything is probably not a good thing.” With the album set to launch in September, does she have a tour planned to support it? “I do have several gigs planned throughout the UK in September. I still love performing and it’s something I’m looking forward to again. There’s nothing quite like a live stage to give you the opportunity to really connect with your fans. I can’t think of anything more thrilling than engaging with people who are there to share the music you have written.” So if there was one person you could perform with on stage with, who would that be? “Robert Plant. Without a doubt. I’d be ready to get up and perform with him any time he is ready,” she laughs. As a mother and wife, outside of her career, what does she do to occupy herself ? “I have many interests beyond my own career. I really enjoy going to gigs – although I always feel an inclination to get up on stage myself – I’m not very good as a member of the audience! “Of course I love being a mum and cooking and trying different foods is something I enjoy. I also really like cinema and I’m a huge fan of Ang Lee’s movies.” So will we ever see her make the full transition from music to movies? “I’m not so sure about that,” she smiles. “Loving something doesn’t always mean you can adopt it as a profession. I think I’m content staying with what I am good at.”

Sharon Corr is not your average pop star. She is charismatic, talented and impossibly attractive but also possesses an elegance absent from many of today’s artists. She is also refreshingly articulate and honest about the profession she has been involved in for over 20 years.

An Ode to Oud History of Arabian fragrances

Perfume is thousands of years old; the word ‘perfume’ comes from the Latin words ‘per fume’ which means “through smoke”. One of the oldest uses of perfumes comes from the burning of incense and aromatic herbs used in religious services. Perfumes began in Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. The first logged perfumer was a Mesopotamian female named Tapputi, she made perfumes from flowers, oil, and calamus. Then introduced was the ‘Book of the Chemistry of Perfumes and Distillations’, which was written by the Arabic Chemist, Al-Kindi. This book was written in the ninth century and contained more than a hundred recipes for perfumes, fragrant oils, salves, aromatic waters and substitutes or imitations of costly drugs. The book also described 107 methods and recipes for perfumemaking, and even the equipment for making perfumes, like the alembic.

Exclusive Ingredients

Fragrances were mostly based on plants, the roots, blossoms or leaves of henna, cinnamon, turpentine, iris, lilies, roses, bitter almonds etc., which were soaked in oil and sometimes cooked. The essence was then extracted by squeezing, and the oil was added to produce liquid perfumes. Most of the perfumes have more than a dozen ingredients. This is the most authentic method of creating perfumes. Most of the Arabic perfumes highlight one note, like Oud oil which is all Agarwood, 52

OHLALA!

Let’s walk into the opulent world of perfumes, where we discover the intimate secrets of Arabian fragranes and oils.

Attar, which is flower extracts and Mukhallat is a mixture of substances like amber, musk, rose and jasmine with or without oud. The higher the concentration of Oud, the more expensive they are. The Fragrance Family chart includes four basic fragrance families: Floral-Sweet, Citrus-Fruity Fresh, Oriental-Spicy, and Woody-Chypre.

Arabic Perfumes & Oils

Arabian perfume and fragrances are 100 percent natural with no preservatives or water, which makes them strong and last longer. Oud is the most expensive and smells heavenly, woody and balsamic; it surrounds a warm aura of bitter sweet and woody nuances. Perfume Oils are the concentrated form, and the perfumes are made from the oils. Floral perfume oils are made from floral

plants and smells like flowers, Oriental perfume oils, are made from spices and sweet aromatic plants and Arabian perfume oils are made from varying aromas, like woody, spices, musk, and floral.

Select your scent

The choice of perfume depends on the aroma you prefer. But there are few guidelines you can follow to choose the perfect fragrance. Spray it on a card first, after five minutes, smell it again, see you if you like it. Knowing your skin type is essential; if you have dry skin, the scent will dissipate more quickly, so a highly concentrated perfume will last longer on you. Choose a perfume according to the season, occasion or mood, to uplift your soul. Try floral or fruity during the day and shift to Oriental blooms at night. Strong aroma scents go well with cooler weather and lighter ones are better in warmer weather.

Adorn yourself

For optimum performance, perfume should be dabbed onto your pulse points; centre of the neck, behind the ears, inner wrists and behind the knee, as well as on the knee and elbows for a longer-lasting aroma. Avoid rubbing the perfume on the skin, as the heat will dissipate the scent. For a lighter scent, try spritzing the perfume into the air and walking through it, also spray onto your hair. Apply petroleum jelly to your skin, on the places you’ve sprayed the perfume, as this will make the scent last longer. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Oud Amber

Oud

Intense by Du Bois

by Gucci

The new Oud by Gucci arose as a curiosity for worldly travel by Frida Giannini, Gucci’s creative director – who took a special interest into our region and our cultures fragrance rituals. The new scent interprets ancient ingredients from the East in a modern and iconic way. The new fragrance was created with a natural and very unique source of Oud, specially cultivated and purified just for Gucci. The opening notes of the fragrance contain pear and raspberry, they then meet the vibrancy of saffron and then follows the introduction of the Bulgarian Rose and the Orange Flower. Enhancing the deep sensuality of the Oud at the core of the fragrance are ambery, musky notes and of course Patchouli, a true icon of Gucci scents. The Patchouli gives the fragrance a modernity that differentiates it from the traditional Oud we all know and love! Available at FACES

A new addition to Du Bois’ Prive collection, which draws inspiration from the Orient, Oud Amber Intense is redolent of a spicy, citrusy opening of bergamot, tangerine, black pepper and cinnamon. Flower, fruity woody notes of neroli, rose, blackcurrant and patchouli infuse the heart and held together with an amber accord. This mélange enfolds the senses at the end with musk and Du Bois’ signature 100 percent pure, natural Oud. Because of Du Bois’ commitment to using only sustainably-sourced ingredients, the fragrance has also been endorsed by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and five percent of the proceeds from the sale of the fragrance goes to the foundation. Embark on a voyage into the world of Amouage, courtesy of its creative director, Christopher Chong. Ohlala! finds out more about the inspiration behind the new beguiling scent in this exclusive interview. His vision has made Amouage into one of the great perfume houses globally. With last year’s release of Fate Woman and Fate Man – ‘the first cycle of the Amouage narrative’, now comes Journey Woman and Journey Man – the second cycle, which delves into creative director Christopher Chong’s life and is subtitled ‘Portraits of a Life’. “This is the beginning of the cycle where I, as a creator, come to the front of the stage – to draw on life experiences, the places I have been and to form a dialogue with my customers,” he shares. Creating ‘Journey’, Christopher says he was inspired by two cultural elements from his early years: Shanghai Deco and Chinese film noir. “For me these have a special meaning because they were my childhood entertainment. a journey for him & her “While Journey for Man takes an intrepid leap into the unknown, Journey for Woman is a quiet, observing traveller that first lays out a path,” says Christopher. Journey Woman is very Deco featuring jasmine tea, saffron, cypriol, and osmanthus, which provide the Eastern details on the solidity of the Western foundation of honey, cedar, and tobacco. For gents, Journey Man unspools the reel of larger than life accords of sichuan pepper, neroli bigarade, juniper berries, along with the tobacco and cypriol. “Our lives play out in fragments. I make sense of mine by drawing elements from my experiences and morphing them with other art forms to define, articulate and transcribe my world within the compositions of these fragrances,” he quips. And so for Christopher, and for Amouage… the journey continues.

immigrated to America from Hong Kong when I was six, there wasn’t much for us to do. My parents had to work and they couldn’t afford babysitters, so we had to stay at home and watch TV – and that’s how I got exposed to all these different kinds of films,” he recalls. With this early exposure to film and his myriad of experiences, Christopher weaves distinctly Western elements into a rich Eastern undertaking. Reflecting his personal odyssey and metamorphoses through life, he wanted to give his new creation an Oriental feel. “When we start a journey, the one thing that we always need is some kind of direction. So I thought of a compass and you see this on the circles that are on the boxes. Instead of being translucent, this time the bottles have that Chinese lacquer effect,” he explains. OHLALA!

T

his new ‘user-friendly’ Ferrari cabrio claims to offer Ferrari excitement alongside the practicality of boot-space, a two plus two seating configuration, and the added efficiency of a turbo. Does it deliver on all fronts? Ferrari has traditionally favoured big displacement in V8 and V12 naturallyaspirated engines, because the power delivery is instant and linear, and there’s no turbo-lag. However, global shifts in demand towards cars that are more efficient have prompted Ferrari to respond with this, the California T, where the ‘T’ is for turbo. With such a big change, there’s bound to be some nervousness on the part of Ferrari, as they endeavour to win over the purists. In the pre-drive technology briefing they went to great pains to explain the technology that made this new turbo-charged engine just as good as the V8 in the outgoing California, if not better. They needn’t have bothered. This new engine is, to put it quite simply, a masterpiece. Turbo-lag? You’d need to have

64

OHLALA!

some kind of electronic device to measure it, because it’s unnoticeable to the human brain. And indeed, Ferrari did have an electronic device, which measured it (and a graph to show the results), and it proved that the power delivery is only a few milliseconds slower than the old California’s V8 thanks to the twin-scroll turbo charger. The new V8 also produces 560hp to the old one’s 490, and 755Nm compared to 505Nm. This means that the California T will accelerate to 100km per hour in 3.6 seconds as opposed to 3.8, and on to 200km per hour in 11.2 seconds compared to 13.8. Top speed is also up by four to 316km per hour.

The racy growl of that new Ferrari V8 is just as delicious as you’d expect, and the slight scream of the turbo enhances rather than taints it.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva drives

The point is that this new engine provides more power for 15 percent less fuel, without compromising on performance and without noticeable turbo lag, which basically makes it better than the outgoing California, whatever anyone else says! I took the California T out for a two-hour spin on my own along some of the most beautiful winding country roads I’ve ever seen, and had something of a moment to myself. I’ve simply never enjoyed a drive quite so much in my life! This was only partly due to the stunning Tuscan scenery. The vast majority was down to the eminent driveability of this beautiful car. I’ve never driven a car so hard and so fast along unfamiliar winding roads, whilst still feeling completely at ease and relaxed. What little oversteer I experienced was corrected with a flick of opposite lock, and understeer… well, there was none! In comfort mode, the chassis soaks up the bumps and potholes of an uneven road with finesse, but in sport mode, the California T manages to tighten everything and produce more grip, without making the ride jarring to the point of discomfort. And the ESP interferes less in Sport, allowing for a tiny bit of sideways fun. Track mode I reluctantly left alone on these unfamiliar roads, as it turns the ESP off completely, and I don’t yet trust myself enough with someone else’s Ferrari! The racy growl of that new Ferrari V8 is just as delicious as you’d expect, and the slight scream of the turbo enhances rather than taints it. So there you have it; the Ferrari California T delivers in practically every way I can think of. It’s comfortable and luxurious, and therefore perfect for driving around town or for road trips. It’s practical, because it has four usable seats and enough boot space for shopping or luggage. Despite all this, you still get that special Ferrari excitement with the adjustable chassis and that glorious turbocharged V8 for when you want to open her up and let loose. And, it’s absolutely beautiful! What more could a girl ask for? www.ohlala-magazine.com

Diva drives

Petrolhead Pretty Our resident Diva Driver, Lisa Speed, is extremely excited about some of the exclusive models that will be hitting Bahrain’s shores in the coming months. So if you want a car that truly stands out, be sure to read on and get yours booked!

T

he good news for Bahrain this July can be summed up in four beautiful badges, namely Audi, Bentley, Maserati and Rolls-Royce. Each of these prestigious brands is bringing something to the market that has me extremely excited, so please allow me to elaborate. First off, we have Audi, who have further jazzed up their model range with a special promotion on these stunning exclusive metallic finishes on the A7 five-door coupe. I love a nice eye-catching metallic paint-job as long as the colour is right and it’s done well, and these 2015 A7s are the perfect example. The promotion is only on for a limited time, with a limited number of models available, so if you really want to stand out and enjoy the high levels of luxury and performance of an Audi A7, then go along to the showroom and find out more, sooner rather than later! And the next piece of good news comes from Bentley, who recently re-entered the world of motorsport (a world they used to be very active in, in days of yore), with their jaw dropping Bentley Continental GT3 customer car, which stormed to victory at the second round of the Blancpain Endurance Series at Silverstone, the first UK race for Bentley in 84 years. As impressive as the Conti GT3 is, however, you wouldn’t want an extreme racer like this as a daily driver, not least because it isn’t road legal! Enter the Continental GT3-R. The most extreme GT the prestigious British brand have 66

made, the two-seater is hand built in Crewe and finished by Bentley Motorsport, with a retuned version of Bentley’s race-proven, high performance 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 developing 572 bhp and 700 Nm of torque. Together with a 100 kg weight reduction and shorter gearing, the Continental GT3-R is the fastest-accelerating road-going Bentley ever, capable of reaching 100km per hour from a standstill in just 3.8 seconds. I’m currently begging them for a demo to review, but with only 300 of these extremely exclusive models being made, I think it’s a long shot… And whilst we’re on the subject of exclusive

models, let’s take a look at the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale Centennial Edition (try saying THAT quickly after a heavy night at Trader Vic’s!). This special model will be powered by the same 460hp 4.7-litre V8 as the GranTurismo Sport, and will come with exclusive three-layer paint schemes, amongst other unique features. We can confirm that only ONE of them has been earmarked for Bahrain, so if you want a truly-one-of-a-kind ride, call Euro Motors now! And finally, yet more exclusivity comes from Rolls-Royce, who like to demonstrate their incredible levels of bespoke coachbuilding skill by releasing limited-run special editions every once in a while. This latest one, the Waterspeed Collection edition, will only have 35 examples made, and Bahrain has been selected as one of the few dealerships globally to offer it! It was created to commemorate Sir Malcolm Campbell setting the world water speed record of 126.32 mph in a Rolls-Royce-powered Bluebird K3 hydroplane boat on Lake Maggiore in 1937. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Real-World Diva Drives Ohlala! talks to the true Diva Drivers of Bahrain, with this month featuring businesswoman and entrepreneur Wiebke Buelow, who drives around town in her midnight blue Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. 300sl-Gullwing

So Wiebke, where are you from, and what do you do? I’m from Stuttgart, in Germany, and I’m a shareholder and sales and marketing manager for a fine jewellery company called Gemme Couture. My friend started it up a few years ago, and she was looking for an investor to help her expand the business, so I came on board about a year ago. What was the first car you ever owned? My first car, an Audi A3, I didn’t actually own, because it was a company car. But the first car I ever bought was a Smart Fourtwo Cabriolet, which I absolutely loved! I was living in Frankfurt, and needed something small, compact and practical, but also fun, and the Smart was perfect. Of all the cars you’ve owned, what was your favourite? When I left Germany for Bahrain and sold the Smart, I decided to go for something I had always wanted, so I bought a gorgeous BMW Z3, which was an amazing car. But now you have the Jeep? www.ohlala-magazine.com

My husband insisted I get an SUV, simply for the safety and security they offer on the roads here. So I said, if I’m going to get an SUV, then at least it’s going to be a fast one, so we got the 5.7l V8. And I love it! It’s comfortable, luxurious, and it really goes when you hit the pedal. And even though it’s big, it’s still easy to drive and manoeuvre. Why did you choose the Jeep over all the other options? To be honest, it’s the amount of car you car for this price, compared to a Land Cruiser, or the VW Touareg, which are far more expensive, and with less options for the money. The options this model, the Overland, has are great. The ventilated seats are the BEST in this weather! And at the end, I have to say, I like the look and feel of it. If you could have any car in the world, what would it be? Oh, that would definitely be the classic Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. It’s the most beautiful car in the world! (Good choice!)

Get the Party Started!

The 14th of July will be one big party as the Bastille Day celebrations get underway to commemorate the French Revolution. For most, the occasion is marked by watching the procession down Champs Elysées and afterwards, hopping on a quick metro ride to the Eiffel Tower to take in the spectacular fireworks display. Cue mass celebrations up and down the country!

T

he French took their first steps towards democracy in 1789 when crowds of angry Parisians stormed the Bastille, a prison that symbolised Royal authority. Its fall was to cause that of the tyrannical monarchy and the creation of the modern French nation. Moves to write a constitution for the new republic led to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 26 August 1789, the precursor to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948. Today Bastille Day is a wonderful mix of pomp, ceremony and uninhibited fun. Every single village, town and city in France has its communal meals, dances, parties and firework displays so nobody misses out. The festive atmosphere and merrymaking start early and go on until late into the night. Everyone should spend at least one Bastille Day in France. 68

Bastille Day Traditions Several traditions make up the festivities for the French national holiday, but the biggest one is the parade on the ChampsÉlysées in Paris which takes place every year on the morning of Bastille Day, when a parade makes an impressive showing of all the branches of the French military. The French are renowned for their cuisine so no French holiday would be complete without a lavish and utterly delicious meal. In some regions of France it is customary to have a picnic on Bastille Day, but in most places, families head home to enjoy a nice leisurely meal in the middle of the day. A modern day addition to the celebrations is the magnificent fireworks displays which are done in many regions of France. In bigger cities, you can expect to enjoy a patriotic fireworks display in the evening such as the one by the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

CANCER

For some time you have been the object of an admirer’s affections and whilst you’ve been holding back your emotions, this month is going to see your feelings shift and it becomes increasingly difficult to ignore the obvious chemistry between you. In truth, you are inexorably drawn to them on a very deep level and your emotional path may already have more than just an element of destiny about it. There is something different at work here that has captured more than just your imagination and although you can often be prone to unrealistic romantic diversions, this is certainly a substantial possibility. On the career front, you’re going to see your workload increase due to additional responsibilities being passed your way and whilst you are industrious enough to take the extra commitment on board, just make sure you are financially rewarded for the effort.

Giovanni reveals your destiny …

CANCER At-a-Glance

Those born under the sign of Cancer are often imaginative people who can think out of the box and apply their talents well in business. They also possess an innate power of intuition, often relying on their gut instincts to carry them through any major issues. Sensitive and loyal, they make excellent partners in a relationship and are always supportive of their “other-halves”. They demonstrate great admiration for their loved ones and are amongst the most sympathetic and caring of all the Zodiac signs.

Leo

The number one issue for you this month is health and if you’re suffering any kind of back problem, use July as the platform to try and put things right for the future. You haven’t been feeling yourself for some time now but ignoring or refusing to accept the situation won’t make it go away. The solution lies in the hands of a professional and also perhaps a little change of life-plan on your part. As for relationships, try not to distance yourself too far from a partner because they may be feeling neglected at the moment and you may need them on your side more than ever soon.

Virgo

The last few months have been very difficult for you and a lot of this has to do with complications within the family and a particularly aggressive relative who seems set upon disrupting the balance of your tight-knit relationships. However, you’ll find yourself turning the corner in July and you can look forward to a new attitude in your thinking that will go some way towards correcting the problem once and for all. On the relationship front, a new romance could spring up from a chance meeting through work and you will feel yourself lifted and excited by the prospect of a fresh love affair entering your life. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Capricorn

Aries

Aquarius

Taurus

Around this particular time of year your sign really tends to come into its own because of your natural affinity with Cancer, so you have a great deal to look forward to this month. You have seen yourself slowly change over the last few weeks and for the first time in literally ages someone close to you has brought out another side of your personality: one which not many people have seen before but a skin that suits you and you fit into very comfortably. This is really you at your best. It will reap rewards in many more areas than might first be obvious.

The next few weeks are set to be a period of reflection for you as you come to terms with past actions, which still snap at your conscience from time to time. You will also be give the opportunity to make amends and if you feel you have been unfair in a situation then now is the time to resolve the issue. If you leave it too much longer then it may be too late. On the home front concerns over finances could force you into having to take out a loan. Just make sure you don’t underestimate on the repayments otherwise you could make matters worse.

Sagittarius

Pisces

Gemini

Libra

You will have some difficult emotional issues to deal with over the coming weeks, especially where a sick relative is concerned. You may be forced to make some awkward choices but you have to remain resolute in your thinking if you are to succeed with your ultimate aim. Romantically, your affections towards a distant love remain foremost in your mind but as he or she does not share your affections, your obsession could be doing you more harm than good. It might be time for you to accept some harsh truths and move on. Being stuck in an emotional rut will only hold you back.

Try not to over exert yourself in the next few weeks because you may not realise it but your recent fitness obsession could see you pushing yourself too far, leading to more harm than good being done. It’s one thing to keep yourself trim but another to push aside all logic in pursuit of a level of perfection that is unattainable so try to slow down before you do yourself an injury. On the home front a child may need a little more of your attention than usual because a problem at school is causing them to worry and this is hurting their progress.

Scorpio

You have been through a torrid time of late but hope waits around the corner as you put the worst behind you this July and get your head above water. Whilst there isn’t going to be a magic fix to everything immediately, you’ll start to see improvements in your life, mainly in the workplace where you’ve encountered a majority of the obstacles. An opponent will finally be exposed and your situation will be vastly improved following this. On the family front, try to take some time out for a young child who is really desperate for your attention.

You have been putting in a great deal of hard work to improve your career prospects over the last few months and whilst you may be reaping the rewards, there is still so much more you can achieve. Others may be taking the credit for what you have done so you need to assert yourself and claim not only all the recognition but also the financial gains that come with it. In matters of love, you have never probably been closer to the person dearest to your heart as you are right now, so if you sense there is something wrong with your partner, don’t be afraid to ask what it might be.

After a fairly strenuous June you can look forward to a little relief in July and the prospect of a long holiday will never have looked so inviting. Consequently, put some time aside to get away from it all and just relax. You’ve really been stretching yourself over the last few months and although you might not realise it, your batteries are nearly on empty. You won’t be able to go much further even if you want to. There isn’t much point to having made great achievements in your career if you don’t allow yourself time to appreciate them. If you have been feeling down recently then you will be pleased to read that things will look up for you over the coming weeks – even if you can’t see it at the moment. Your main concerns are likely to be about career and the home, with both in a bit of a mix up. You need to make a couple of strong decisions for July and then ensure you stick to them. Things have been moving along well but you may be so close to matters that you just can’t see that. By the time August arrives it will be a completely different story and then the fun can really begin. You may have been warned against entering into a relationship with a particular individual but your decision to ignore the advice and follow your own mind could end up dumping you in hot water. It seems the rumours reaching you about a loved one were correct and your life is about to suffer a complete turnaround. The stability you thought you were enjoying will be shattered and the fallout could seriously hinder previously planned travel arrangements. You will do well to negotiate what is likely to be a tricky July.

Faith

The Ohlala! resident philosopher offers her take on the illusions of perception…

How many of you have noticed that faith comes in degrees, sometimes it is there in full force, you can feel the dedication within yourself, the power, the drive, you feel grounded and secure, no matter what happens, no matter what is thrown at you, you just have this deep profound faith in the belief that you have. The faith and belief, flows strongly through your veins and you can feel it deeply within your soul, the tiniest inkling of doubt is nowhere to be found. The faith is through and through. Those are the times we need to be aware and observe how it works, so we can replicate it. Then we have those moments where faith seems to have taken a back seat in a far away corner for some reason, and asking or willing it back is a challenging task. Before we know it our minds are preoccupied with “Let’s stop for a moment everything but faith and doubt and feel our faith.”

90

OHLALA!

emerges to take its place. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a recipe for continuous faith? Or if we at least had the ability to conjure it up at will. Faith all year round or just on special days, or when we feel we are stuck in a rut and create faith to help us go through it. When do we really have faith and when do we sort of forget and only use it when we feel the need to? How does faith really work? Can we have faith all the time or does faith have a seasonal timetable and come and go like happiness and all our other emotions? Let’s stop for a moment and feel our faith. Where is it located, how does it feel? Let us nurture it and feel its flow. Not just for a few moments, or a day or two, but throughout the whole year.
