WEEKEND MAX MARA

Editor’s Letter This month we are focusing on the places where we spend most of our time (at least in the past year) or would love to stick around for more extended period – our homes. We talked to an expert in the décor field to understand what we are doing right and what can be improved, with a list of the hottest home trends in 2021. We also made a selection of home styles that best suit your personality. Don’t miss the opportunity of checking if your home reflects who you are (pg68). And if you are a home décor enthusiast, we bring good news! OHLALA will have a monthly section dedicated to this theme; stay tuned! Our beauty spread is all about new products and makeup lines to upgrade your beauty cabinet (pg38). We also bring a selection of exclusive beauty products that you will find in just one place on the island; curious to know where? Go there and check it now (pg52)! And with summer officially here, we discuss the importance of sunscreen and what exactly is behind this highly recommended product (pg54). We are introducing a new page in our magazine: OHLALA Voices. This monthly section will feature an interview with an interesting personality in Bahrain. In this issue, we talked to an expert in the educational field (pg56). Instead of our usual food review, we celebrate summer with a different concept. Some talented chefs from our favourite restaurants in town share their delicious recipes with us. You know that dish you love so much? You can now reproduce it at home! (pg78). And we finish our journey test-driving a luxurious and fast car (pg86). Enjoy your reading! When we read, we know we are not alone.

New Faces

Tiffany & Co. is introducing three new global ambassadors. Anya Taylor-Joy, Eileen Gu and Tracee Ellis Ross are the new faces of the jewellery brand. The women add their unique beauty to the brand's T1 line campaign, 'Give Me the T' shot by Mario Sorrenti in New York City. "Growing up, I would often wander through the flagship store on Fifth Avenue, imagining myself as a grown woman wearing the bold elegance of Tiffany's signature diamonds. All these years later, to be the face of this iconic brand and to represent the T1 collection is a dream come true," said Tracee Ellis Ross. While the story behind Tiffany T1 remains centred on inner strength and individuality, the breadth of the collection has evolved over the past year to include new bracelet, earring and pendant styles, as well as new 18-carat white gold iterations.

Modern Creations

The German luxury lifestyle brand MCM is all about supporting local talents and empowering women. To reinforce this mission, the brand is collaborating with the artist and singer Hanan Kamal. Reimagining traditions from the Middle East, the artist combines cultural codes along with her take on modern graffiti on a limited-edition collection of five artistically decorated bags that are exclusively available at ounass.ae. A vibrant burst of colour injects fun into every piece with bold expression while keeping culturally relevant symbols such as the crescent moon and the falcon. “This collection celebrates diversity and culture while empowering the new generation to escalate their creative freedom to their highest potential; there are no rules here, and there is no dress code,” says Hanan.

Collaborative Footwear

adidas Originals and the Middle Eastern designer Arwa Al Banawi have partnered to create a new look for the brand’s iconic Forum trainers. Arwa Al Banawi likes to blend traditional tailoring with contemporary perspectives. The Arwa Al Banawi Forum Lo Sneaker silhouette pays homage to her Gulf roots, incorporating multiple perspectives, such as east and west. Composed of a canvas upper with suede overlays and matching leather stripes with hand-stitched embroidery, they come in desert-esque hues. A woven red and white heel cap, inspired by the checkered pattern of traditional Arabian fabrics, serves as an ode to the designer’s origins. You can find them at adidas. com and selected Gulf retailers.

Unique and outstanding jewellery pieces are Chopard’s speciality. The Red Carpet Collection epitomises the brand’s love for films, creativity and eye-catching jewels. 30

C

hopard has officially partnered with the Cannes Film Festival since 1998, and the maison’s workshops annually rise to reinvent the Red Carpet Collection. A demonstration of outstanding jewellery-making ability and a lifelong passion for cinema. This new Haute Joaillerie collection is composed of 74 creations. Paradise is the theme that flings wide open the doors to the palaces of the imagination through a distinctive collection teeming with life. One of the creations features interlacing yellow diamonds aristocratically circling the neck in a choker before unfolding into a second halo of light adorning the décolletage. It is majestically constructed with an exceptional stone: a stunning, fancy, vivid yellow 30.68-carat diamond single-handedly epitomising the opulent splendour of the goldsmith’s wonderland. A snake ring, inspired by the Garden of Eden, flaunts its charm on the finger, while a delicate tsavorite sautoir necklace with a leaf-shaped pendant lights up the chest area. Cradled by the enchanting waves of a sea of sapphires, a dolphin ring depicts these delightful creatures dancing around a magnificent 59-carat oval tanzanite. Caroline Scheufele, the co-president and Creative Director of the house, has also designed a bracelet with a colourful graphic central motif embellished with garnets, tsavorites and tourmalines. Among the Chopard Haute Joaillerie collections, Red Carpet is the one that embodies the ultimate dazzlement, nourished by Caroline Scheufele’s curious and lively view of the world. This collection also highlights the extraordinary work of the artisans who exercise their skills in Chopard’s Haute Joaillerie Geneva workshops, the largest in Switzerland.

The quintessential jewellery brand Garrard reimagines its Albemarle collection with bold new accents.

he House of Garrard is located in the heart of London’s Mayfair, from where every item begins its journey to creation. This time, the brand is launching a new twist on its much-loved Albemarle collection. The iconic Windsor motif has been recreated by playing with size and proportion in graphic compositions. Alongside pendants, rings and earrings, the eight new Albemarle jewels include ear climbers, ear jackets and, for the first time in Garrard collections, a diamond ear cuff. The diamonds are displayed in contrasting angular formations, while the soft edges create an effortless and elegant feel. The pieces are designed with the concepts of adaptability and versatility in mind, showcasing Garrard’s expertise in crafting transformable jewels. “The reimagined Windsor motif incorporates abstract clusters of round

and geometric shapes, bringing a contemporary edge to the collection. The delicate, asymmetric silhouettes ensure the pieces are suited to every occasion. The creative process was driven by the desire to craft truly versatile jewellery,” says Sara Prentice, Garrard’s Creative Director. The Albemarle collection is inspired by the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara – one of Her Majesty The Queen’s most recognisable pieces. The brand’s origins can be traced back to 1735, and in 1843 it was appointed the first official Crown Jeweller. Ever since, Garrard has played a significant part in contributing to the British royal collection. From Queen Mary’s consort crown in 1911 to the engagement rings of both the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Cambridge, Garrard has crafted some of the most famous jewels in history.

The allure of our surroundings provides eternal inspiration for Mouawad, and its new campaign exalts some of the world’s natural beauty. 34

www.ohlala-magazine.com

T

he azure sky and natural landscapes inspire Mouawad to create its works of art. Concepts such as symmetry and harmony, petal motifs, leaves and flowers and extraordinary gemstones, that are themselves a natural source, influence the jewellery brand. The new Natural Wonders campaign pays tribute to both the beauty of nature and Mouawad creations, taking its setting in one of the Earth’s most incredible landscapes – the desert. The stunning contrast between golden sands and blue skies with scintillating sunrays, compose the stunning visuals. The Miss Universe contestants from Hungary, Germany and Greece are adorned with Mouawad’s high jewellery pieces displaying a combination of different natural beauties. Courtesy of stunning gemstones and exceptional craftsmanship, the pieces emanate an out-of-this-world aura. The sets include the Pure Allure Diamond Suite, a masterpiece that features an array of round, oval, marquise, and pear-shaped white diamonds totalling 112.42 carats. The design expresses the pursuit of a precious dream in an orchestration of scintillating light and elegance that eludes time. The Flaming Iris Diamond, Sapphire, and Rubellite Suite combines some of the world’s most sought-after precious stones – 14.27 carats of diamonds, 31.18 carats of rubellites, and 272.66 carats of sapphires in a unique design imbued with a rainbow-like joie de vivre. Every Mouawad gemstone has a powerful connection with nature and a story of its own. The journey of creating these unique works of art starts by sourcing the most amazing diamonds and gemstones. Through innovation, craftsmanship, and in-house capabilities, the jewellery brand explores new frontiers of artistry, bringing to life incredible masterpieces that are Natural Wonders in their own way. @mouawad

CHANEL introduces a new olfactory scent to its LES EAUX DE CHANEL fragrance line.

T

he LES EAUX DE CHANEL collection was introduced in 2018 and is composed of fragrances inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s favourite places in the world. The first three fragrances released were PARIS-BIARRITZ, PARIS-DEAUVILLE and PARIS-VENISE, followed by PARIS-RIVIERA in 2019. Olivier Polge, CHANEL’s house perfumer, in cooperation with the CHANEL Laboratory of Fragrance Creation and Development, has now orchestrated a fifth olfactory journey – PARIS-ÉDIMBOURG. More than destinations, LES EAUX DE CHANEL are countless invitations to escape for no reason to a dreamy place, be it by the sea or in the countryside. “LES EAUX DE CHANEL were designed as light and refreshing ‘eaux fraîches’. I drew inspiration from the destinations that have strong ties with CHANEL. Each one has left its mark on a fragrance, ” explains Olivier.

Immersed in the great and mysterious Scottish countryside, the perfumer was struck by two characteristic odours: juniper berry and peaty wood. This tension between incisive freshness and warm shadows spurred the idea of a scent with the power of aromatic plants in the tradition of British men’s colognes. He highlighted the lively and distinctive notes of juniper berry and cypress, added a hint of lavender, then chose cedar for its enveloping comfort and vetiver for its earthy and slightly smoky accents. Lastly, he warmed the scent with notes of vanilla and musk. This is how PARIS-ÉDIMBOURG, the earthiest, most androgynous and woodiest of LES EAUX DE CHANEL, became a reality. “It could be the fragrance of a tweed jacket borrowed from a man’s wardrobe that was such an inspiration to Gabrielle Chanel,” tells Olivier. “Like the scent after a stroll through the countryside, it is steeped in the odours of the wild landscape.”

L’Occitane’s all-time favourite Almond Milk Concentrate body cream has had a revamp and is ready to conquer you all over again with its new formula for firmer and smoother skin.

L

’Occitane is a natural and organic ingredient-based cosmetics and well-being products manufacturer and retailer with solid roots in the Provence region of France. The beauty brand has always promised ingredients from native origins that demonstrate its Provençale roots. In its commitment to reducing waste and respecting biodiversity, L’Occitane is relaunching its Almond Milk Concentrate body cream with a new formula and packaging. T

he American singer believes that everyone is unique and rare, and her line celebrates who you are and what makes you different. The brand aims to use makeup to shape positive conversations around beauty, self-acceptance and mental health. Selena’s interest in beauty products started at a young age and, over the last three years, she has channelled her love for makeup into developing her brand. Rare Beauty products are designed for everyday self-expression, and each item has a sensorial story. The brand’s Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner is inspired by a calligrapher and comprises more than 1,000 individual hairs. The complexion products include the Always An Optimist Illuminating Primer, Always an Optimist 4-in-1 Mist, and the Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation & Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer, each available in 32 shades to suit all skin tones. With grapefruit, you either love it or hate it. But with our homemade recipe, you don’t have to worry about the taste; you can apply it to your skin and still get all the benefits. Enjoy OHLALA’s DIY beauty tip for our July & August issue.

rapefruit is one of those fruits that has attractive looks, but the taste is not so great. Its luscious colour does not reflect its flavour and tricks you. Some people won’t eat it at all, some do, and love it, while others only consume it for its healthy properties. When you think of grapefruit, chances are you think of vitamin C. While it’s true that this type of vitamin plays a role in both immune function and skin health, that’s just one of the many benefits. This citrus fruit is also rich in antioxidants, such as beta carotene and lycopene. Antioxidants have been known to help prevent sun damage, increase collagen production, work as a brightening agent, and improve skin tone. Like lemons and all citrus fruits, grapefruit has natural acids that exfoliate dead skin, keeping pores clean and complexion bright. The vitamin C derivative known as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate helps decrease water loss, helping your skin retain moisture and look more supple. A great ingredient to have in your exfoliant armoury to remove dead cells without drying up your skin. Full of salicylic acid, this scrub works wonders on your elbows, knees and heels to fight stubborn rough patches.

OHLALA’s Grapefruit and Sugar Scrub What you’ll need:

1/2 grapefruit, juiced 1 cup of granulated sugar 3 tbsp of grapeseed oil (or any fast-absorbing carrier oil such as safflower or jojoba)

How to make and apply it:

1. Pour the grapefruit into a bowl (preferably a ceramic one, not plastic). 2. Add the sugar and grapeseed oil (or the oil of your choice). 3. Fold the ingredients over with a wooden spoon to combine. 4. Apply the scrub to freshly cleansed skin, and use your hands to massage it into your complexion for about two minutes, gently. 5. Wash it off and carry on with your regular beauty routine. Because this recipe contains fresh juice, it’s best to use this scrub all in one sitting. If you’d like to make your scrub ahead of time, increase the grapeseed oil and add a few drops of grapefruit essential oil to replace the fresh juice. With these changes, it should last at least one week in the fridge. 52

REBECA GONÇALVES ON PEXELS

The hottest months of the year are here, and protecting your skin from harmful sunrays is a summer trend you should keep up all year round.

54

www.ohlala-magazine.com

T

he sun is shining more strongly than during the rest of the year, and that’s when most of us remember that sunscreen is a must (though it is actually important 365 days of the year, sunrays are sunrays in any season). But with summertime here, there’s nothing better than to talk about sun protection. SPF is an acronym for sun protection factor; it indicates how well a product protects you from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The numbers that come after the acronym denote the amount of time it takes for the sun to redden the skin. A product with SPF30 will take the sun 30 times longer to burn the skin than if it were without protection. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a product with SPF30 allows approximately 3% of UVB rays to hit your skin, and a product with SPF50 allows about 2%. Why should you wear sunscreen? The ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer, and sunburn damages skin cells and blood vessels; repeated injury weakens skin making it easy to bruise. Also, too much sun exposure causes facial ageing signs such as wrinkles, pigmentation, and texture degradation. And what is UV radiation? It is invisible to human eyes and part of sunlight that includes visible light and heat. The UV rays are divided into three types. UVA accounts for about 95% of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. UVA has a long wavelength that can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. These rays are also responsible for immediate tanning contributing to skin wrinkling and ageing. UVB is partially blocked by the atmosphere, has a medium wavelength, and cannot penetrate deeper than the superficial layers of skin. UVB is responsible for delayed tanning and sunburn. It can also enhance skin ageing and promote skin cancer development. And last, UVC, a short wavelength that is totally blocked by Earth’s atmosphere and not a concern in sun exposure. How should you choose your sun protection? There are two types of creams: sunscreen, made with chemical defences that penetrate the skin and absorb the UV rays before they damage the dermal layers; and sunblock, which sits on top of the skin and acts as a barrier to the sun’s rays. Some sunscreens include avobenzone, oxybenzone and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), ingredients that absorb the sun’s rays. Sunblocks commonly contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide and are often opaque and noticeable when applied to the skin. Most brands combine the two, sunscreen and sunblock, in their formulas to best protect the skin. However, your skin type should be taken into consideration when choosing the best product for you. People with sensitive skin tend to tolerate sunblocks better, while fragrances, preservatives and oxybenzone are not the best picks for allergy-prone skin. Consult a doctor if you have any particular condition. Other important aspects to take into consideration: - Read the labels and opt for a broad-spectrum product (that protects from both rays, UVA and UVB), don’t rely on facial creams that already contain sun protection; most of the time, they don’t have broad-spectrum coverage. - Look for water-resistant products; this will mean that they will be effective for around 40 minutes in the water; you will have to reapply after that. You also should apply it 30 minutes before the sun exposure and reapply every two hours if you don’t enter the water. - There is a myth that if you tan well or have a dark complexion, you don’t need sun protection. Health experts advise that everyone, regardless of skin colour, should wear sun protection. Dark-skinned people might have a higher concentration of melanin; however, that does not mean they won’t suffer the harmful aspects of UV rays such as sunspots, wrinkles and even cancer. - Don’t rely on high-SPF sunscreen alone. Applying sunscreen or sunblock is just one crucial part of keeping you protected. Seeking shade and covering up with clothing, wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses are the other mechanisms to keep your skin free from damage. www.ohlala-magazine.com

AN ACADEMIC LIFE OHLALA is inaugurating this section with a chat with Dr Susan E. Saxton, the Founding President of the American University of Bahrain (AUBH). She tells us her story and all about higher education in Bahrain.

56

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Voices “Motivate yourself and articulate your ‘will’, and then find your way. Show up. Keep going. Don’t stop in the middle!” – Dr Susan E. Saxton OHLALA - Why did you choose to work in education? Dr Susan E. Saxton - I’ve always had a passion for teaching and learning, so the education industry is a natural for me. However, my career has been geared toward the business and innovation side of education regarding startups, turnarounds, building networks of higher education institutions around the world and, of course, setting the standard for leadership, management, and operations required in high-performing institutions. My focus on international education is on building the workforce needed to positively impact communities and societies, supporting the international trade of ideas, goods, and services, and increasing the quality of life for those who need it the most. Education is also a catalyst to cultural interaction, shared best practices, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking – all of which can foster collaborative and creative thinking about our future. OHLALA - What are the most exciting highlights at the American University of Bahrain? Dr Saxton - First, we are lucky to have a sensational campus, built by U.S-based architects Ayers Saint Gross (ASG), which specialises in the student-centred experience. Completing this state-of-the-art campus was a significant milestone that allowed us to welcome the first cohort of undergraduate students in the autumn of 2019. As the first Americanstyle institution in the Kingdom, we are proud to have received eligibility to apply for U.S. regional accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which is the highest quality assurance for schools and universities at an institutional level in the United States. Since the academic year started, I have been very proud of the number of safe and sound activities on- and off-campus. A new Student Council was elected with energetic leadership; we celebrated holidays, along with sports activities like the annual President’s Run; we hosted visitors in online classes and on-campus; we initiated Discover America Week with the U.S. Embassy, AmCham, Microsoft and Amazon; and we implemented a myriad of agreements and scholarships with prominent and highly regarded companies in the Kingdom. And that’s just the beginning! OHLALA - In your 25+ years of experience, what are the achievements you are most proud of? And what were the most significant challenges? Dr Saxton - Since my experience is mainly related to start-ups, turnarounds, initial public offerings (IPO), mergers and acquisition, I’ve been proud to lead institutions to success and help create high-performance teams. I’m pleased to have hired senior officers who have followed me from one position to another for more than 25 years. Of course, when you move

around and spend a lot of time travelling, it’s always challenging to balance work and family life. While challenging, I’ve been lucky to be in roles that brought me a great deal of job- and self-satisfaction. I’ve also been blessed with a family that has supported me in many ways and is proud of what I am doing. Especially now in the Covid-19 era, there are many challenges requiring fortitude and persistence to overcome. I am content with how we have managed to deal with the adversities and how our team has made opportunities out of obstacles. OHLALA - As a woman who has conquered a lot in your career, what advice would you give to other women starting their career journey? Dr Saxton - First and foremost, I would recommend making yourself open to as many learning experiences, challenges and opportunities as possible. Show up at different events and occasions, and venture outside of your comfort zone. Seek out mentors you respect and value, and observe them – and, above all, never stop learning. Take some risks and test resilience; make some errors early on, so you bounce back smarter than before. Build skills and store them in your mental tool kit to pull out when you need them. Think strategically and operationally, regularly express your mission, purpose, values, and priorities, and then measure your performance. When I was growing up, there was a saying about overcoming struggles: “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. Motivate yourself and articulate your ‘will’, and then find your way. Show up. Keep going. Don’t stop in the middle! OHLALA - What are your favourite things to do on the island? Dr Saxton - Bahrain is a country I can happily call a second home, and being on campus with the AUBH community is what I enjoy the most. I also love to join my Monday night running group and sports friends, who I get to see from time to time. And I especially enjoy learning about Bahrain’s history through the many wonderful friends I have made in the last two years. As the Founding President of AUBH, I’m particularly pleased that the Kingdom has been enthusiastic about the concept of an American-style university that is, and will become even more, part of the fabric of Bahrain with its beautiful past and promising future. OHLALA - If you hadn’t taken the path into the educational field, what other route would you have followed? Dr Saxton - Though I did not have a traditional education-related background, I have managed to find and stay in a role that leveraged all my skill sets, degrees and interests. I don’t think I could have planned this from the start, but I’m sure happy that I’m here now!

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE

HOME

As we tend to stay indoors more during the hotter months of the year, we turn our attention to this magical place that we call home.

D

ifferently from other countries in the world, in the Middle East summer is when we spend most of our time inside our homes. The pandemic has just increased the amount of ‘at home’ moments. And because we are spending more time in our nests than ever, making them cosier and reflective of our mood, style and personality can be a hobby or a mission over the following months (if Covid-19 hasn’t put you in home improvement mode already). We talked to Marilia La Marca, an Italian architect based in the Middle East, to learn more about home décor and how to improve our spaces. We have to start by understanding that everyone is different and has a unique style and taste. “It’s exciting when I enter a space, and I can immediately recognise the owner’s passions. It would be best if you weren’t shy to add your personality to your home. If you love travelling, why don’t you highlight it in your décor? Create a wall with floor to ceiling maps and interesting pieces coming from each place you have been,” says Marilia. Transporting some of your interests into your home decoration is a way of adding a unique touch to some of the fast furniture you might have, or to your fullyfurnished expat lifestyle. Not only will this make you feel more at home when away from your ‘real’ home, but these are also small details that will make you happy. Even when you don’t know how long you are staying, investing in your present life is imperative. If this is your country or if you have created long-established roots here, your personal interests can grow more extensively and become the heart of your home decoration.

Things to be Avoided Always avoid extremes. Homes loaded with too many things can be translated as messy and confusing and might not reflect a calm place that you want to return to. Especially in the challenging days that we are living in, we need a space that gives us serenity and peace, reassuring us that all will be fine. On the other hand, rooms that are too minimal and without enough functional elements can give you a feeling of solitude, a cold and uncomfortable place. We go back to the essential point of looking for balance when putting your space together. And, as in the fashion world, don’t shop by impulse. “One of the biggest mistakes that I see is that people tend to go to home stores or even when they are online shopping, and they randomly buy some pieces because they fell in love with them,” says Marilia. “When they arrive home, they realise they don’t match or go along with what is already there.” A way of avoiding this kind of situation is to take pictures of your home spaces or even create a floor plan. You can check the images to be sure about the colours and have an idea of the available space.

NATUZZI ITALIA AT WESTERN FURNITURE

Essential Considerations Now that we know how to add elements to make our home a special place, we need to understand how to create the whole ambience as a nice place to live. “Be attentive of proportions; it is important to create a nice equilibrium between empty spaces and furniture,” highlights Marilia. If you pack your home with lots of big furniture and all sorts of decoration without creating some empty areas, it will feel cluttered. It is all about balance in life! Another key tip is to use soft neutral tones and contrast them with decorative elements that standout, such as a colourful abstract painting on a neutral background. The eye-catching element can be a striking sculpture, a nice rug or even a lounge chair. When creating the feel of your home, try to choose one style and stick to it in the whole house. If you opt for minimalism, make it clear in every room. Consistency is vital to sustaining the tone you want for your home.

OHLALA Insights Other small suggestions include: change the pillow covers, add a nice pot with one big plant for a splash of green or add a distinctive lamp to the area for a warm light or even just light a candle to achieve the same feel. If your home allows, move things around, change the placement of your furniture or interchange the spaces, this will also give you the feeling of a new scenario. In terms of adding a statement accessory to your home Marilia suggests: “I personally think that a nice rug does the trick. A nice big rug brings everything together. Your sofa, coffee table, lamps and pillows, they will all be connected through the rug.” Her last words of wisdom are: “Your interiors need to reflect your personality; otherwise, we risk having all the same impersonal spaces. And be surrounded by what you love; these items will give you positive vibes, every single day.”

CALLIGARIS AT WESTERN FURNITURE

#stayhome The movement that started with the pandemic has made us realise that home is the place to be. But how can we create a more comfortable and pleasant space? “Bring some greenery inside, try to recreate an outdoor garden indoors or create a relaxing corner,” says the architect. To make this space ideal, she says that rule number one is to make this particular area near a window to connect with nature; it would be even better if you have a patio outside. You can create a beach feel with a carpet made with natural fibres and some colourful pillows. “Maybe during sunset, you can dare to crack the window open for a while to let some fresh oxygenated air blow inside. I know that when it is 50 degrees outside, you need to be brave to do that!” she adds. If you want a simple change, create a new ambience without a total revamp. An easy way is to add some horizontal lines. They give you an immediate coastal atmosphere, refreshing the style. Horizontal lines are known to provide you with tranquillity and help your body and mind relax. They recreate the warm feeling of looking at the horizon. For the opposite effect, vertical lines are the best option for offices and gyms where you need a burst of energy and rhythm.

Mid-Century Story This style is relatively modern and probably the most common interior design style out there at the moment. It combines the comfort and warmth of traditional elements and the clean aesthetics of a contemporary style. Colours: Warm neutrals are commonly teamed up to dark brown and taupe. Vibrant shades are not very popular in this style. Persona: If you like to mix and match things, this might be the one for you. Vintage Touch This style is complex and unique. It is composed of furniture that marks a well-defined time in history. However, it is not only about antiquity. Some modern furniture can be inspired by past designs and bring the same trait with a twist. Some characteristic styles from the ‘50s, ‘60s or ‘70s, for example, can be reinterpreted but still carry the features of that specific period – an ode to old-world charm. Colours: This depends on the period that the furniture was inspired by. But frequently tones of beige, dark blue, maroon, green, teal and peach can be spotted in vintage designs. Persona: If you like this kind of style, it shows that you might be a complex person yourself. And you are determined, motivated and, deep inside, a perfectionist.

Nippon Lines This style is all about creating a calm and harmonious atmosphere with Japanese Zen-inspired aesthetics at its core. Natural and soft light along with open spaces and some key-décor pieces that show off this theme reflect this interior design. This style also brings a sense of balance. Colours: Appeasing tones such as white, grey, beige, soft pink and green are paired with black accents. Persona: Best suited for people who are simple, positive, organised, energetic and cerebral. They may also have an issue with cluttering and hoarding, preferring to maintain a minimal lifestyle.

Nordic Reigns Scandinavian designs celebrate simplicity, minimalism and functionality in all their aspects, be it in people’s homes or as a way of dressing. Clean lines and fuss-free furnishings comprise this kind of interior design concept. This style also prizes empty spaces and the facilitation of natural light into the rooms. Colours: White, warm grey and crisp blues. Persona: People who identify with this approach are usually friendly, outgoing, have a great interest in culture and are simply elegant.

ETHAN ALLEN

Palatial Aura Reviving tradition, this concept combines classic and ethnic styles with some modern elements. Intricate designs, curves and patterns are frequently added to these homes. Lights and mirrors reflect the grandiosity of this interior design. Different textures and the use of printed fabrics and frills are also featured. Colours: Dark shades of burgundy, navy, brown and black contrast with pale hues. Persona: People who like tradition and are rooted in their culture like to style their homes with grand furniture and decoration. They can also display some traits of introversion but are usually highly efficient.

Paella “Paella is probably the most well-known dish from Spanish cuisine and the most-satisfying dish to prepare since most people love it! Although it looks a very complex dish, paella is easy to reproduce at home.” Juan Luis Pérez Chef de Cuisine at Salero Restaurant

Ingredients 70ml olive oil 150g baby squid 150g cuttlefish 150g shrimps 80g white fish

100g clams 100g mussels 4 peeled garlic cloves 50g frying green pepper 50g white onion

0.25g saffron 3g smoked sweet paprika 100ml white grape (optional) 400g diced ripe tomato 160g paella rice

700ml fish broth 20g green peas 4 lemon wedges Sea salt flakes White pepper powder

Method - Heat the paella pan on medium heat. Add 2/3 of the olive oil and heat it. Add the squid cut into rings followed by white fish and cuttlefish cut into approximately 1cm cubes. - Cook the seafood lightly until its golden, this will give more flavour to the dish. Remove the seafood from the pan and set aside. - Add the remaining olive oil into the pan and add the garlic until it’s golden brown. Add the finely chopped pepper and onion, let them caramelise on a medium heat. Add some saffron and paprika. - A cooking tip is to use a wooden spoon to stir. - Pour on the white grape and the diced tomato. Reduce the heat and let the veggies cook slowly until they reach a marmalade texture. If necessary add some water to bring moisture to the veggie base. - Once you’ve achieved the right texture add the seafood back into the pan. Mix well and then add the rice. Ensure that all rice grains are soaked with the mixture of veggies and seafood to incorporate the flavour. - Flatten all the ingredients in the pan, pour in the fish broth and season with salt and pepper. - From that point, it is essential not to mix the ingredients anymore. Bring it to the boil and reduce heat. Simmer for around 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can pop it in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius for the same amount of time. - After 20 minutes add the clams and mussels to the paella, spread green peas and let it cook for another five minutes. - Once the rice is cooked remove from heat/oven and let it set for five minutes before adding the lemon wedges to garnish. 82

Gemista (Greek Stuffed Tomatoes) “After living for more than 16 years in Greece, I love Greek food. And I love cooking this cuisine when I am not cooking in Attic. Gemista is one of my favourite summer dishes to prepare at home, perfect to share with family and friends. An icon of the Greek culinary tradition. It is absolutely delicious! This recipe has been passed from generation to generation and today I share it with you. Just try it and enjoy this flavour of Greece.” Leonardo Garcia Head Chef at Attic Restaurant

Ingredients 8 tomatoes 1 onion 1 garlic clove 1 leek 60ml olive oil 1 tbsp granulated sugar 300g glutinous rice 1 chicken bouillon cube 400g ground beef

100ml water 1 lemon 1/3 bunch dill 1/2 bunch parsley 1/2 bunch mint 500g potatoes 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp butter Salt and pepper to taste

Method - Remove the stems from the tomatoes and cut the top part to make a kind of ‘lid’. Carefully remove the flesh from the tomatoes, using a teaspoon, and reserve. - Preheat the oven at 180 degrees Celsius in fan mode. - Place a deep pan over heat, let it get hot and add the olive oil. - Add the finely-chopped onion, garlic and leek. - Add the rice, bouillon cube and ground beef. Mix with a wooden spoon and break up the ground beef; add water, lower the heat and season with salt and pepper. - Chop the tomato flesh and add to the mixture in the pan. Sauté for 10 to 15 minutes, until all the moisture evaporates. - When the filling is ready, remove from heat. - Add the finely-chopped dill, parsley, mint and the juice of the lemon. Taste the filling and make sure is well-seasoned. - Before you fill the tomatoes, drizzle the interior with some olive oil and then season with salt, sugar and pepper. - Fill the tomatoes to the rim, cover with their ‘lids’ and set aside. - Place a pan over heat and let it get hot. - Peel the potatoes and cut them into wedges. Add the olive oil, pepper, salt and butter. Sauté until golden. When ready, distribute in the baking pan among the stuffed tomatoes. - Drizzle everything with olive oil, cover with parchment paper and then aluminium foil. - Bake for one hour, remove coverings and bake again for 20 to 30 minutes, until golden. - Serve on a plate, adding the stuffed tomatoes, potatoes, fresh herbs and mint leaves. - You can also add some feta cheese, dry oregano, olive oil and bread. 84

f we are fortunate enough, every now and again we get to experience something truly exceptional. This was the case for us at OHLALA magazine this month when we were handed the keys to the new Bentley Continental V8, compliments of the outstanding team at Bentley Motors Bahrain. We drove to the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay to enjoy the scenery of the bay area. This was the first time we have gotten behind the wheel of a genuine Bentley and we knew we were in for nothing less than an amazing ride. From the moment the Continental came into view we were smitten with this strikingly beautiful coupé. The Glacier White exterior paintwork served to highlight the sleek and smooth contours of the vehicle with the sharp, super formed lines, running the length of the 4,850mm body, enhancing all of the stylish details. These modern details include the elliptical quad tailpipes, the discreetly placed V8 badge on the fender and the eye-catching 20-inch, 10-spoke, painted alloy wheels. These wheel spokes have been arranged in symmetrical pairs, giving them a fancy look and adding to the car’s already exclusive presence. The wheels are further enhanced by the optional carbon ceramic brakes with either black or red callipers. Special mention must go to the stunning headlamp design, inspired by the finest cut-crystal glasses and featuring the latest LED Matrix technology. Inside the GT, a single hide colouring of your choice awaits you, in our case, a Newmarket Tan colour throughout the cabin provided an understated

elegance that exuded both class and style. The contemporary Crown Cut Walnut veneer adorning the V8 fascia comes as standard and perfectly complements the rest of the interior. The 20-way adjustable leather seats are perfectly stitched and offer a level of comfort and support we have rarely experienced before. The heated, three-spoke, hide-trimmed steering wheel sits perfectly in front of the driver and feels great in hand. The pure comfort of this deluxe coupé is greatly enhanced by the ample head, shoulder and knee room on offer throughout the Continental. At the heart of the dashboard is an advanced, fully digital, driver-orientated instrument panel and the optional Bentley Rotating Display that features a 12.3-inch touchscreen housed in a three-sided unit. We found this system to be exceptionally responsive and user-friendly. Plenty of additional swanky features are located inside this luxury vehicle, just waiting to be discovered. As much as we loved taking in the aesthetic beauty of this exquisite coupé, we were most excited to get out onto the roads to see what it had to offer under the bonnet. As soon as we engaged the ignition, the sound of the 4.0 litre twin-turbo engine brought a smile to our faces. Combined with an eight-speed dual clutch transmission, this engine can produce 404kW of power at 6,000rpm and 770Nm of torque at 2,000 – 4,500rpm. What this means is that the new Bentley Continental GT V8 can surge from 0 – 100km/h in a mere 4.0 seconds and boasts a top speed of 318km/h! On top of this, it is one of the smoothest rides you can ever hope to experience.

DIVA Drives When tackling the tarmac in the GT, its passive chassis, with a pre-set balance between ride comfort and handling, ensures you can take on any corner with full confidence. The air suspension uses three-chamber air springs, further improving the comfort of the ride. The Active AllWheel Drive system varies the front-to-rear torque split depending on the driving situation, with the Continental GT V8 using rear-wheel drive as much as possible during normal driving for optimum efficiency as well as a more spirited performance. We found the Electric Power-Assisted Steering to provide superb feedback to the driver and, coupled with a variable rack, it ensures an increase in manoeuvrability whilst maintaining outstanding stability. The Bentley Continental GT V8 driving experience was nothing less than sublime and we can honestly say we have never had a more enjoyable driving experience. The master craftsmen and craftswomen at Bentley have included a range of safety and assistance features to ensure each and every trip you take is as safe and convenient as possible. These features include Adaptive Cruise Control with City Assist, Active Lane Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Parking Assist, Rear Traffic Warning, front and rear hollow, lightweight anti-roll bars and multiple airbags just to name a few. If you are looking to experience a pinnacle of automobile achievement, we can only encourage you to contact Bentley Motors Bahrain. MISS Ohlala

WHAT IS HOME? SUCH AN EASY AND DIFFICULT QUESTION TO ANSWER. IS IT PEOPLE, A SPECIFIC PLACE OR THE MEMORIES MADE DURING A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME? There is a proverb that says that home is where the heart is, and it means that no matter where you are in the world, your home will always be located inside of you. Home is that warm feeling of being loved, a particular smell, the beat of a song or a place to refer to. In our own way, we all understand it. History says that this proverb has been present and used in the USA since the 1820s; however, it has never been so fitting. The improvement of travel options and the creation of the Internet have made moving around and living abroad more accessible than ever. The world has become smaller, and the reference of a home is not one necessarily easy to connect with, mainly for children who grow up having an expat lifestyle. And if parents have different nationalities, it is even harder for them to connect with one country or the other. Which makes ‘home is where the heart is’ an important motto. A home provides security, control, belonging, identity, and privacy. It is also a gathering place to spend time with family, friends, and even with yourself. So no matter if you have lived your entire life in the same area or if you are 1,000s of kilometres away, it is essential to create a cosy and lovely harbour wherever you are. Make the best of your shelter, and don’t forget to keep your home concept always in your heart.
