elcome to our Ramadan issue, which sees us getting our glad rags on and piecing together sparkly ensembles for a host of Iftars across the hotel circuit. When we arrive at this point in the year, we’re both excited and calm. It’s always so fun and foodfilled with an emphasis on togetherness. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t take to the tranquility that Ramadan brings to the work place. After back-to-back events in the Gulf and beyond, packed issues and relentless running around, I, and all of us at Ohlala, need a bit of pause. But, as ever in this business, the show must go on! When it comes to Ramadan style, the phrase: “belle of the ball” rings so true. It’s all about going bigger and better than the last outfit with suitably ostentatious accessories to match – we have you covered in this department quite thoroughly – hello statement necklace.

Letter But for me, it’s all about minimalist chic, where you don’t have to be so loud but still create noise with your outfit. And on the topic of understated glamour, I have become such a cheerleader for abayas recently. I’ve always been partial to modest dressing so when I first came across Bouguessa a year ago, I loved how sleek and elegant the abayas were and how versatile they can be. You could mistake a Bouguessa abaya for a jumpsuit or a magnificent cape. We speak with Faiza Bouguessa about how she is revolutionising the abaya, one collection at a time. The abaya has come such a long way to form a new identity (without compromising its roots) and take on new meaning for women who want to be at the forefront of fashion but still honour their culture in the most sophisticated way. Wishing you all a wonderful Ramadan.

C u tt i n g Ed g e T rad i t i oN The abaya as we know it has evolved. Gone are the days of homogenous wear; traditional dress is in fashion – with a twist. Editor in Chief Georgie Bradley speaks with Faiza Bouguessa, behind the eponymous, Bouguessa, who has revolutionised the abaya to be both urban and luxe

“Bouguessa has democratised long-held tradition and opened it to all”
I
“
“I felt that nobody really gave women who dress modestly any thought”
t’s an abaya?!” I recall squealing in disbelief. Not because what I was looking at was outrageously ostentatious or radical, I hasten to add. But because this particular abaya worn by a model sauntering about in a catalogue-perfect Parisian apartment, was something I’d wear in a heartbeat. The cut was sleek, tailored and form-fitting, without being too shapely around the contours of the body. It was a royal blue velvet abaya, draping so elegantly but with a slight urban slouch giving a modern note. Another model was clad in a sharp boxy suit of a deep burgundy hue (with a partially velvet collar) that hung confidently, showing both modesty and style. This is what Faiza Bouguessa does. She creates abayas that every woman would wear, regardless of their background. She has democratised long-held tradition, and opened it to all. Bouguessa pieces are not defined to one single aesthetic – Faiza likes to play with structure, geometry and flow: “I like to give my 32
www.ohlala-magazine.com
customers options. There’s the choice of wearing belts around the abayas if you want. My clients come to me for an abaya that’s a fashion statement. In my collection there are all types of abayas that can take you from day to night. There are some styles that are easy every day pieces and then there are some that are very eye-catching,” says Faiza. When it comes to the target market, she’s naturally placed an emphasis on the Gulf but for the SS16 collection, she had taken her collection to Europe and therefore felt the need to sidestep a bit. “I went away from my usual aesthetic. I was presenting in Paris and Milan and I felt that I had to make an effort to make it more adaptable to the European market. But for the AW16 [what is shown here] I realised it was better to focus on my market because that’s why I started the brand in the first place – I felt that nobody really gave women who dress modestly any thought.” Faiza has a rich tapestry of culture behind her. Born in Algeria but growing up in France and then living in Dubai has meant Faiza has had a diverse mix of influences for her work; but it’s not as prescriptive as you would think. “My inspiration is very random, just like any other designer. I am inspired by paintings, a piece of furniture, or a trend of the moment within international fashion,” adds Faiza. One trend that is present in the AW16 collection is the nod to pyjama wear that’s taken over the last couple of seasons – the piping details on the shirts and the cream velvet robe-like piece illustrate the hotly adopted trend the most.

“The unexpected colour in the lining or the geometry in the cut has brought the best out of the abaya and given it a new identity” In that vein, Faiza designs her abayas in such a way so as to give her clients freedom to build on the canvas of each piece – the unexpected colour in the lining or the geometry in the cut has brought the best out of the abaya and given it a new identity. But how far away from the abaya’s original roots and context will Faiza go with Bouguessa? “I would say the abaya has become more sophisticated over time. I think it’s a good thing because women feel the need to express their personality via style here, at the same time, they still have their strong religious beliefs and they want to respect that too,” notes Faiza. From our perspective, Bouguessa is a breath of fresh air and ticks all the right boxes. www.ohlala-magazine.com

full access June is here and so is the heat. Beauty editor, Sofia Graniello gives you the 101 on how to beat the sticky weather with style
Q: My face is going through a rough patch, literally. What is the best moisturiser out there?
A: The heat can be brutal, but behold Chanel’s latest face moisturiser. Apply day and night for better results – it does wonders!
Q: The weather is starting to ruin every hair style possible. How can I tame the curls?
Q: My eyebrows are all over the place and I’m beyond lazy about getting them threaded. Any tricks on how to keep them in place?
A: Absolutely! Vaseline will be your new best friend to tame the girls. Add a very small quantity to your eyebrows and make sure to comb them. This will only put them into place without any hazardous chemicals.
Q: Heavy perfumes are a bit overrated. I want to mix my perfume department with fresh scents. Help!
A: A mix of flavours never does any wrong. Dab into Laura Mercier’s Tea Menthe Citron collection. Fresh, wild with a twist of je ne sais quoi.
56
www.ohlala-magazine.com
A: Set them free! But if you’re a control freak, braids are royalty at the minute. Mix your style with different styles. Also, add a flower for a funky look.
Q: The heat can be unbearable. How can I achieve healthier and hydrated skin?
A: With Ramadan upon us, eating healthy is key. Stick to plain yoghurt for a light stomach. Add pomegranate, or strawberries to add natural sugar. Perfect to get rid of unwanted spots.

An indulgent iftar We sample the rich delights of the InterContinental Regency Bahrain Iftar – the perfect destination to break your fast

Chic Eats
A
s far as crowd favourites go, The InterContinental Regency Bahrain has a firm place at the top. And with Ramadan upon us, the property is catering to a variety of diners ranging from business communities to families and us – the master eaters and ultimate lovers of fine food. When tasked with tasting a hearty selection of Iftar type food, we jumped at the chance – mainly because this is our favourite time of year, where food and family come together. For starters, before we got stuck into their supreme offering of Arabian cuisine, we were oo-ing and aa-ing over the Ramadan accessories used for the shoot: think twinkly lanterns, rich hues and cute Arabic coffee cups. It definitely put us in the right mood – a very chic affair. From roasted nuts to lusciously gooey dates, we snacked on a delightful mix of typical pre-starter starters before going forth into Chef Mohammed Samara’s Iftar menu. Chef Mohammed specialises in Arabian cuisine, served as though it was from your grandmother’s kitchen, so to speak. He is a convivial man with a heartwarming disposition and a generous want to give. With his nurturing approach (by which we mean, he always wants to make sure you’re in good hands and understand the different types of food) we dipped into the first specialty: falafel with tahina dip. Perfectly crispy on the outside and packed with punch on the inside, it put us on the right track. One thing we cannot resist is Saj with Halloumi cheese and fresh Zaatar. It’s both filling and light at the same time and distinctly Arabian in its flavour and that’s what we love. We then moved onto the Cheese Raqaqat – thin cigar type rolls which had the most flawless crunch and creamy mozzarella cheese on the inside. And then for a final roll, we indulged in Chicken Musakhan, very
oriental in flavour with smooth chicken and topped with tangy spices: delicious. Now when it comes to desserts – during Ramadan no less – there’s no holding back. We have a particular penchant for freshly baked Knafe – this was warm and rose-infused, without being too overpowering. But if there’s one thing The InterContinental Regency Bahrain can do with brilliance, it’s cake. We were presented with three full sized, beautifully concentric cakes that could easily win in a competition: Saffron Mango Cheesecake, Date & White Chocolate Cake and Pistachio & Rose Cake. The presentation alone tasted so good. And when we chowed down each and every one of them, we went to cake heaven. The Iftar menu in full offers something for all. You can expect Grilled Fish with Lemon Butter Sauce, Lamb Okra, Harees and Arabic Mix Grill with Mahalabia Milk Pudding, Crème Caramel and Umm Ali, among loads of other dishes. You can also expect similar offerings on the Ghabga menu but with the addition of Daoud Basha Meat Balls with Pine Nuts and Chicken Madrooba. As far as entertainment goes, there will be a Tanoura show – a customary dance performed at religious ceremonies by listening to music, focusing on God and spinning the body in repetitive circles. And lastly, the Al Sharek Trio will perform Arabic and Turkish music from the 19th and 20th centuries – playing on the oud, violin and percussion – very atmospheric music to go with an Iftar. You can embrace the spirit of Ramadan at The InterContinental Regency Bahrain by heading to Al Riffa Ballroom for Iftar between 6-8pm where it’s BD14++ inclusive of Ramadan beverages. And then for the ultimate Ghabga, make your way to Al Thurayya Hall between 8pm-1am where it’s BD15++ inclusive of two Ramadan beverages. For more information or reservations call: 1722 7777

When Wolfgang Came To Bahrain & Loved It When a celebrity chef comes to town, what better way to showcase the country than a day trip around Bahrain? We took to the streets with culinary extraordinaire Wolfgang Puck, who was visiting his acclaimed restaurants at the five-star Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay...
If you’ve been keeping up to
date with the in the waters around Bahrain, and a look at local tradesmen social scene in Bahrain (and our instagram!) then you’ll and the art of getting a good deal! One memorable find has to know that last month was quite a special one. We started be the baby shark, which fascinated Chef WP too. It was great May with a wonderful visit from Celebrity Chef Wolfgang to see a world-renowned chef sharing some of his tips, and Puck (WP), who was in town to catch up with the team picking up new knowledge, of different seafood from the local at his three restaurants - CUT, re Asian Cuisine and Blue fish market! Moon Lounge - located in the stunning Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Little did Chef WP know that we had arranged to give him a little taste of local life in Bahrain, 9.45am. Spice Souq & Tea Stop with a day trip to visit some of the island’s best foodie and cultural hotspots; here’s all the fun from behind the scenes A short drive down the road and we’re at the bottom end of the #WolfgangLovesBahrain tour! of Manama Souq, an area which is packed with spice shops
selling a huge variety of seed and powdery condiments to liven up your cooking. Chef WP mingles around the many 9am. Central Market pyramid mountains of different spices, casually smelling and tasting the ones that peak his interest. In the end, we As we’re driving to the lively central market and Chef WP get a bag of turmeric, red chilli powder, and garam masala is all smiles, taking in the surroundings through the car – all of which Chef WP makes use of in his restaurants back window. Before we arrive at the bustling market, he tells at the Four Seasons Hotel. us: “Bahrain is different. Everything is more liberal here It’s already hot outside, so we decide to take a pit stop and people are so nice and welcoming.” Out we hop for our at a traditional, local café. Kasab Restaurant is covered in first stop; the fish market. black and white pictures depicting Bahrain’s past. We show Chef WP and his team get stuck right in, coming face-toChef WP what Bab Al Bahrain looked like in the 1800s, as face with more than just hammour, as the market offers them he waits for fresh bread and daal, which he savours with a an insight into both the many different species of fish found cup of karak chai. www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Perhaps the most memorable part of the visit was when he picked up an Oud and, honestly, played it like a pro. Everyone in the room was impressed”
12noon. Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre We just had to show Chef WP some of Bahrain’s traditional crafts and industries that have become a legacy for the country; the collection of workshops at Al Jasra were a perfect introduction. We stopped by the basket weaving, mat making, artisan, textiles, woodwork and pottery workshops, where Chef WP was able to get a first-hand insight into each practice. Perhaps the most memorable part of the visit was when he picked up an Oud and, honestly, played it like a pro. Everyone in the room was impressed… even the lovely Bahraini man whose workshop it was! It’s safe to say that apart from learning more about Bahrain’s rich heritage, Chef WP picked up a great new skill in playing the Oud.
1pm. Lunch at Freej Bin Rashdan Where do you take a chef who has prepared the menu for the Oscars for more than 20 years now? (no pressure). You go local! We head to Muharraq and stop off at Freej Bin Rashdan where Chef WP and his team experience an authentic taste of Bahraini food and hospitality. From using rose water to clean their hands, to having a go at preparing khubz (bread) in a traditional clay oven, and trying a number of Bahraini breakfast and main course dishes, Chef WP and crew discuss flavours, ingredients and cooking methods around the dinner table. A couple of dishes that stood out for them included the Madhruba and the Khubz with Mehyawa (fermented fish sauce). So much so that after we sipped down our Gahwa (Arabic coffee), we made a quick pit stop at a local grocery store to pick up some Mehyawa, Khubz flour, Nakhy (chick peas) and Bajeela (parsley). 66

2.30pm. Return to Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay We’re back in the CUT restaurant kitchen, and it’s been a long, hot day so far. Yet, Chef WP, is still full of energy and, much to our delight, he decides to whip up some Bahraini-inspired dishes using some of the ingredients we’ve picked up along the way. First though, we gift Chef WP with his very own traditional ghutra and egal, and in no time he’s got it on! As for the cooking, Chef WP makes khubz from scratch and fills it with mehyawa and his own touch of baby tomatoes and Parmesan cheese. He then cooks Hawamer fish using the local spices and some veggies we picked up earlier. Taste test: delicious. Australia is a magical place that falls on many people’s travel wish list but it isn’t exactly very close to the GCC, or anywhere for that matter. In saying this and even though it’s a decent 14 hour plus flight from the Middle East, imagine arriving after a long flight to this view of Sydney. The Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney is a five-star hotel located at the historic area called The Rocks. It’s within walking distance to Circular Quay, the CBD, Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and the luxurious hotel offers harbour views from every guest room, no matter which room option you choose. On arrival we had our own private check in allocated to us and even though we were early, our room was ready, so we dropped off our bags with the concierge and got stuck right into the advantages this hotel has in terms of location. As we had arrived on a weekend, we were lucky enough to experience The Rocks Markets, just a five-minute stroll away, vendors

We were booked into a Horizon Opera House City room and it was spectacular. These rooms showcase amazing views of the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay, where ferries come and go throughout the day. The rooms feature modern design and furnishings for a relaxing stay with soundproof windows, plush duvets and signature bed linens. We had a corner gorgeous suite with floor to ceiling windows looking out to the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and even all the way towards Pyrmont. We had a Super King Size super soft bed, spacious living room, a grand bathroom, with a tub right up against the window looking out to the view. We really loved the large marble bathroom with a 74

A light breakfast is served every morning, offering a perfect spread of freshly baked breads, hot buffet, teas, coffees, pastries, fresh organic yoghurts, fresh fruits, & muesli. The best thing about this breakfast was that it wasn’t over the top, a small but quality selection. Coffee, tea and juices are available all day with a wonderful afternoon tea served from 2pm, offering sandwiches, tea, coffee, juices, scones and a variety of small cakes, perfect to put your feet up with a cuppa after a long day of sightseeing. Evening drinks and canapes are served from 6pm-8pm, the perfect excuse for a drink before heading to dinner. There is also access to more than 2,000 digital newspapers and magazines plus complimentary water and seasonal fruits delivered to your room. That evening we were booked for a dinner for two at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Altitude. Located on the 36th floor, with floor to ceiling glass windows not only did the view wow us but the service, the food and beverages completed our experience. The outstanding Sydney Harbour views accompanied the finest contemporary Australian cuisine. An 18-person private dining room is available for more intimate gatherings. The restaurant has won many awards including “Three Chef Hats”, Gault&Millau Sydney Restaurant Guide. The signature dishes from their experienced chefs are crafted with meticulous attention to every detail and presented at your table. This is definitely one of the highlights of the hotel and well worth a visit. The next day after breakfast, we walked down to the Ferry terminal and got a ferry across to Taronga Zoo and we spent most of the day at the Zoo looking around. Upon our return to the hotel we were booked in for a 60-minute signature massage at the Hotel’s CHI Spa which was a fabulous treat after a long day walking around. When we got to the spa, our host pushed open a huge secret door which lead into the long hallway of the spa.The host got us seated and offered a relaxing herbal tea, with a selection of green and chamomile already brewing. The treatment room was really spacious with a super soft comfy massage bed, light music playing and beautiful oriental scents. The ambiance was very relaxing and we couldn’t wait for the massage. The therapist worked hard on our tired and sore muscles and it was the perfect fix after lots of walking and a long haul flight. That afternoon, feeling fabulous after our massage we were booked in for our complimentary High Tea for two in the Lobby Lounge. The lobby is wrapped with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and features extravagant views of Sydney. It is an ideal place to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink while listening to lounge music. On our arrival we were served with a glass of fizz. The beautiful high tea had delicate and light, scones, finger sandwiches, cakes petit fours and the service was simply fantastic. Other things near to the hotel to go and see include: the Botanic Gardens, rooftop at the Glenmore Hotel, The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, Hyde Park, Kirribilli Markets, Oxford Street, Paddington for shopping, Darling Harbour a short 15 mins walk away from the hotel ), Sydney Aquarium ( which is also in Darling Harbour ) and Manly and Watson’s Bay by ferry. We can’t recommend this hotel enough for its perfect views of Sydney, delicious food, excellent service and gorgeous rooms. It’s well worth the long flight! www.ohlala-magazine.com

The-Rolls-Royce Dawn Open-air motoring simply doesn’t come more luxurious and elegant thanthis –we presenT the drop-dead gorgeous Rolls-Royce Dawn
A
t first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking the Dawn is merely a drophead (that’s ‘Rolls -Royce speak’ for ‘convertible’) version of the Wraith coupe. However, you would be very mistaken. This is because, rather than simply cutting the roof off of a Wraith, Rolls-Royce have redesigned the Dawn from the chassis up to be the perfect cabriolet. This has resulted in an 80% difference between the styling and shape of the Dawn and the Wraith. On the Dawn, the door lines are higher so that you sit lower in the cabin and experience less wind-noise, as well as adding to the aesthetics of the car when the roof is down. Plus, rather than go for the easy option in terms of soundproofing and body rigidity and give the Dawn a folding hard top, Rolls-Royce insisted on using a fabric roof for its classic aesthetic, which involved some serious engineering wizardry as they also claim that, with the roof up, the Dawn is as silent inside as the Wraith. 82
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Without sound-measuring technology we can’t attest to this, but we can say that the Dawn is as silent as you’d expect from a Rolls-Royce, and also as smooth and sublime. With the roof down, it’s entirely possible to have a conversation without raising your voice even at highway speeds, such is the design of this gorgeous drop top. However, the Dawn does share some elements with the Wraith; the BMW-derived chassis also seen in the Ghost, for example, as well as the 6.6l twin-turbo V12 and the impressive satellite-guided eight-speed transmission that automatically selects the ideal gears for you depending on the road ahead. As a result, the driving experience doesn’t noticeably differ from a Wraith – at the end of the day, you’re talking about two supremely comfortable, luxurious and powerful cars that are designed to offer the most refined motoring experience humanly possible. That is what defines a Rolls-Royce experience, and it’s the same across their range. The transmission is so smooth you aren’t even aware of gear
changes, and despite the size of the engine, only a faint rumble is heard even when you press the accelerator hard. Though the Dawn does feel big, it is surprisingly fast and agile. Don’t get me wrong, it’s never going to feel at home on a racetrack, but it accelerates with gusto, and pulls its considerable weight around corners well, thanks to the massive amounts of grip from the huge tyres. Parking it is also a doddle, thanks to an excellent all-round parking camera that helps you slot into spaces with ease! However, if you’re looking for excitement, you’ve come to the wrong car – unless, that is, you’re excited by soft leather, premium wood panelling and elegant design. Rolls-Royces are designed to be effortless, refined and relaxing, rather than thrilling or adrenalinepumping. The Dawn offers a broader appeal than the Phantom Drophead, as it’s more of a driver’s car than a limousine, and yet still offers that glorious Rolls-Royce luxury. Rolls-Royce call the Dawn ‘the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever made’. We’re not inclined to disagree with them… www.ohlala-magazine.com

Miss Ohlala
Be my guest
Ever the hostess, Miss Ohlala explains the ups and downs of having visitors come to stay I love having people to stay but... I honestly would prefer it if they left after a maximum of four days. It doesn’t matter whether they are family, close friends or strangers, I just don’t have the tolerance levels to put up with anyone invading my personal space for long. And if I had a gate house or separate cottage (unfortunately not), I would put them up there. Don’t get me wrong, I bend over backwards to make sure my guests are enjoying their stay. And I take pride in making it comfortable for them and cooking good food. I spent so many hours deliberating over spare room furniture and linens, much to my husband’s despair, that it has become a household joke. My husband rolls his eyes at any new household furnishing and rhetorically states: “I suppose that’s for the guest room?” The main problem is that I am terrible at mornings. I am fine if no one speaks to me before I’ve had my morning cup of tea in bed followed by a cappuccino, but I am not sociable before the caffeine kicks in. And when you have people staying you have to make small talk over breakfast. Also, I never know whether it is acceptable to greet people whilst you are making an early morning cup of tea in a dressing gown. Add to that I am very short sighted so I can’t see their face properly to have a conversation 106 www.ohlala-magazine.com
if I haven’t yet put my contacts in; which clearly I can’t do before I’ve had a cup of tea, as that would be in the wrong order. Whether you put your socks on before or after your trousers (my husband and I argue about the proper order for such things), everyone has a morning routine, like it or not. Guests disturb that delicate balance. Sometimes my husband likes to eat macaroni and cheese leftovers for breakfast, but he can’t do that while my mother is staying as she would be horrified. And we can’t leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight otherwise she will be up at the crack of dawn doing the washing up like a cleaning fairy, and that makes me feel guilty. And why is it you need to take out the rubbish, restock the bathroom stationary and run the washing machine three times more than usual, even when you have only one guest staying; it just doesn’t make mathematical sense. Now I fully appreciate that there are bigger issues in life and this problem clearly lies with me being too uptight and requiring more patience. I also appreciate that I am very lucky to have wonderful friends and family... but I still would rather they come to stay for lots of short breaks! The good news is that as it’s now too hot, so no one will want to come and stay again until September. The irony is that I’m missing them all already!
