This beautiful spectacle led me to digress and mull over the current fashion state we’ve been exposed to over the past years. For the past few summers, it has felt like the same tired trends have kept on resurfacing: Crop tops. Mules. More floral prints. It’s boring enough to make even a lapsed fashion disciple want to seek solace in airconditioned premises until September brings its harvest of crisp button-downs and dreary shades. No more. hesitate for a second at trying out this particular Signature Ritual, aptly named ‘Awaken Facial & Body Guasha’. This was without a doubt, one of the best treatments of my life. I consider myself to have a fairly high pain tolerance, so I prefer a very deep massage, and this did not disappoint. I could actually feel her working the knots out of my back with her hands. But that was just the beginning. She retreated for a moment, returning with a tool that she began scraping up and down my back. ‘Gua’ means to scrape or scratch and ‘Sha’ means sand, because of the sha rash that can come up is like a sand-like texture right on the skin - although, it’s important to note that this is not invasive. The sensation was unlike anything I have ever experienced before. I wouldn’t call it painful, but it was definitely intense, but productively so. I don’t think it’s a treatment that everyone will enjoy, but, hey, as a seasoned spa-goer I’m indeed hardcore. Kitty dug the tool into the muscles of my back, moving it around my shoulder blades and along my spine, applying pressure until the knots that built up over the past months dissolved. I felt better instantly. As she finished the body treatment, I asked to see this “magical” tool that offered so much relief. My therapist showed me a selection of smoothed quartz and I was amazed.

our salon has just opened up at Bliss Lab by Nasser Pharmacy in Seef Mall. Tell us about the inspiration behind Maison De Joelle and how it first came into

fruition. Honestly, I had never envisaged myself owning beauty salons as it was something that I felt was outside the remit of my experience. I grew up in London and worked as a freelance makeup artist. At this point I just wanted to be at the top of my game and be the favourite artist of the beauty editor or the TV channels.I was completely focused on becoming the best of the best and to be in demand within my industry. However, things changed a little after my show took off in 2004. I love to meet fans wherever I am in the world and the question that I found they asked more than any other was ‘Where is your salon?’ Obviously they would see the salons on the show and assumed they were mine. Over time as more and more asked this question I thought ‘Why don’t I have one? I should have my own salon!’ and that is when the brand was born. I can’t stress enough how hard I worked during this period when the salon was being designed and when it was in its infancy. After filming I would spend every minute I could overseeing the finer details. My audience was spread across the region and although my first salon was in Dubai,

almost as soon as I opened, I realised that I needed to create a franchise and find people to help me expand. I now have 13 salons and I’m incredibly proud. Proud for two reasons, one because of the self- sacrifice and commitment it took for this all to happen. I have had to give up precious time with my family and friends and put my own needs aside in place of the needs of the business. The second reason is the fact that I have worked so hard and achieved a lot as a woman. Growing up I had very few female role models who were businesswomen and I hope that I’m inspiring my staff and fans to be the very best that they can, always. How to you implement services into Maison De Joelle? How do you maintain quality control throughout your franchise? I think the fact that we place our image and the quality of our service above profit every time is the key to our success. My partners take the brand because they want to be seen as number one in their country and bringing a brand such as this to their country makes them stand out from the rest. We only hire professionals who have reached a certain level because they are so good at what they do and they don’t have egos or an air of arrogance about them. They are confident in their own abilities but are friendly, warm and kind. I also love to see how happy my staff are working for the brand. It feels incredibly good to come to Bahrain and see the fruits of my labour. What words of advice would you give to our readers who are trying to reach their goals? My unfailing faith in God and the fact that he is controlling my destiny is central to my success. Before I reached the pinnacle of my career as a make-up artist I had nothing, I was working freelance and had hit rock bottom. When I secured the contract with Sony records I knew that God had allowed this to happen for me. It’s undoubtedly that my faith makes me a better version of myself and I want to make those

around me the best they can possibly be. I get beautiful messages from my employees saying how much they enjoy working for me. Even past employees still say how much they gained from working for me. I expect a lot from my employees, but people always say that they are beautiful people inside and out. We love how down-to-earth you are. Tell us something that people wouldn’t necessarily know about you. I am a really good mimic, I love to imitate people especially when they are about to get really crazy. I love to make people happy and this usually makes them laugh a lot. I love to entertain my friends and when I’m telling a story I play out each detail. Regardless of where I am I act out every part with gestures and make my stories really animated. I’m also quite a forgiving person. When I arrived in Bahrain a friend had really upset me with their words. I was so upset because they had made personal comments which I didn’t agree with or care to hear. I confided in my staff but even then I couldn’t get rid of the internal turmoil. Nevertheless, I went to the opening

and no one would have guessed what was going on with me. I’m able to conceal things well. Afterwards, I was so emotionally and physically exhausted that I went back to my hotel and fell asleep with my phone in my hand and I slept and slept. As soon as I woke up I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. Not just with the success of the previous day but with the person who had affronted me before I left for Bahrain. I am able to ‘medicine’ my mind so that I can stay happy and focused and I don’t allow things to poison relationships. The thing I feel I do need to get a grip of is my fear of flying. It’s completely irrational but at no point during a flight do I feel relaxed. I would rather drive for hours rather than take a flight. For example, tomorrow I’m driving all the way to Riyadh as opposed to taking a 30 minute flight. With demand increasing with Maison De Joelle I must try to overcome my fears as I need to fly to maximise my time.

Rovaniemi, the capital of the Finnish Lapland is an urban oasis amidst the Arctic wilderness, where culture, wild activities and fairy tales come together. Home to an eclectic – and unusual – array of museums. Some offer the opportunity to belt out a karaoke tune, others to shoot a digitised moose. Culture thrives in many mediums in the city; they even have their own chamber orchestra. The Arctic Circle runs through the southern end of Lapland; I journeyed along its axis, to the city of Rovaniemi with a population of 60,000, reindeer not included, making it the largest population hub near the Arctic Circle. It’s no wonder that Santa himself has chosen the city as the location of his post office. Beyond Mr. Claus and Rudolf, Rovaniemi contains several other noteworthy cultural treasures. Along the river and around the city are 70 lean-to shelters that can be freely used by those who want to roast sausages and marshmallows over an open fire or enjoy other outdoor snacks. The Corinthia London in Whitehall Place is the perfect choice and captures both style and substance for its guests. Built in the late nineteenth century and situated at the end of Northumberland Avenue directly across the Thames and from the London Eye, this hotel is the perfect location to discover all of this vibrant city. Everything is well within reach with Oxford and Regent Streets just a short walk away and and even shorter walk to Trafalgar Square and The National Gallery. Whilst staying here, all the must-visit spots are literally on your doorstep yet inside the hotel you feel relaxed and a world away from all the hustle and bustle of the busy city. While the hotel is truly opulent, it also manages to mix elegance and character giving off the vibe of a stylish boutique hotel with both warmth and history. You won’t be able to avoid the stunning Baccarat chandelier in the lobby lounge with its 1,001 crystals sparkling overhead in the Crystal Moon Lounge where traditional afternoon tea is served. This area is buzzing with both hotel guests and people here for meetings and high tea and it boasts a great atmosphere. This is a truly beautiful part of the

hotel with a quaint florist off to one side of the entrance selling the exact floral arrangements that are dotted around the hotel. Staff are sophisticated and welcoming and nothing seems too much trouble; our check in and baggage was handled brilliantly and they were very helpful in giving us any directions or help necessary. The Corinthia’s 294 rooms, including 40 suites and seven two-storey penthouses, are decorated in gorgeous, contemporary hues with high ceilings and large windows and are simply some of the smartest looking hotel rooms we’ve seen. There is so much attention to detail put into the rooms and the décor; we especially love the small touches. The rooms are tastefully styled in warm tones mixed with bold hints and provide the perfect balance between the history of the hotel and the modern feel of today. Space is abundant in even the smallest room which is a novelty for a London hotel. The marble bathrooms are a real feature of the hotel and are spacious and luxurious with a built-in TV at the foot of the bath and high-end ESPA branded toiletries are replenished daily. There is also a huge rain shower, and heated floor and towel rack for the chillier months. This is the perfect place to rejuvenate and to take a long hot bath after walking around the city all day. The dishes were both innovative and surprising, and the meal can be likened to that of an artistic performance. We genuinely tingled with anticipation. Executive Chef Brian Becher and co all employ the very best of local produce and ingredients to create a one-of-a-kind culinary journey, that is indicative of Wolfgang Puck’s very ethos. This new menu is launched at Eid alongside its renowned Dim Sum Brunch which introduces diners to the skillfully crafted selection of Asian bonne bouche without feeling overwhelmed by overflowing platters and countless stations. The brunch showcases the way in which the team employ top notch ingredients and extant technique to produce a variety of steamed buns, pan fried oriental classics and noodle dishes - perfect for diners wanting to sample an array of delights for an impeccable day out. The sublime surroundings and breathtaking view sets the tone for what is about to follow. As we sipped on our handcrafted muddled mocktails we were presented with Stir Fried Chicken Lettuce Cups that danced alongside Thai chilli and Cilantro shavings to provide the perfect unity. I couldn’t help but quite literally ‘digin’ with both hands to the moreish spectacle that befell me. I must say. Crispy Rice Salad with Jumbo Lump Crab seasoned with Thai Basil, Roasted peanuts and a splash of Nam Pla vinaigrette was served and it proved itself as nothing short of exceptional! Known for its sweet taste and hearty texture, the meat from the blue crab is a true taste sensation. The premium grade crabmeat is indeed ‘Jumbo Lump’ which consist of whole lumps of white meat from the body of the crab with absolutely no shell or cartilage. The Mr and I devoured every final morsel as we smacked our lips and refrained from licking the dishes further. There is nothing ‘typical’ when it comes to this gastronomic hub - you’re forever guaranteed a fabulous meal no matter the occasion. There’s a real delight in the honest and unpretentious dishes that are served by their knowledgeable staff.

The Khanfaroosh with almond cake, saffron syrup and arabic coffee ice cream once again highlighted the skill and vision of the Chefs and the scope of their continuously elevated ‘performance’. Are their dishes instagrammable? Yes. Is this my favourite restaurant in Bahrain? Undoubtedly. Should you go? Yes, yes AND absolutely...YES! A fusion of flavours further met with my taste buds as we were introduced to the Steamed Local Sea Bream. A banana leaf acted as a hammock to this marvel bathing the fleshy morsels amidst pickled onion and mint chutney. Growing-up with a Mother who is a chef has definitely allowed for an appreciation to high quality ingredients and fresh produce over the years; something that unfortunately is a bit, well, hit-and-miss across the culinary scene in Bahrain… especially when it comes to meat. Alas, the search for the perfect lamb is over and with a mouthwatering Malaysian Curry massaging and marinating the lamb shank, well, my dreams have been answered. Having been marketed since 1901, this label has had over 115 years to refine its automobile offerings and to ensure they are a cut above most other vehicle manufacturers. We at Ohlala have had the privilege of test driving many different Mercedes models over the years and have yet to discover one that lets down the extremely high level of excellence that everyone has to come to expect from the brand. Thanks to the great team at Al Haddad Motors, we were able to add one more Mercedes model to our list, namely the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE 43 Coupé. Upon our initial exterior inspection, we were immediately impressed by the aggressive stance and muscular shape of this SUV. The expressionism of the vehicle is displayed through features such as powerfully modelled wheel arches and broad shoulders. In the GLE 43,

The three-dimensionally modelled sports grille emphasises the front end and 21” light alloy wheels embody both power and vitality. Illuminated aluminium-look running boards assist in easy entry and exiting of the vehicle. The bonnet is highly contoured and perfectly framed by the finely designed LED High Performance headlamps whilst the flawless finish of the rear end is complemented by the AMG spoiler lip and two-pipe exhaust system. We found the overall design of the exterior to be sleek yet imposing and could not wait to see what the interior held. As expected, the inside of this vehicle speaks only of luxury and sophistication. The seats are electronically adjustable and come complete with memory function. The COMAND™ Infotainment system helps the driver to monitor and control the various features of the vehicle navigation, entertainment, driving systems and vehicle settings. Data is displayed in high resolution on the centrally positioned, fine glass, 20.3 cm screen (diagonal) display. The innovative touchpad facilitates intuitive operation using finger gestures, which we found to be most useful and easy to operate. Slipping into the back, we discovered the four-door coupé design allows for three passengers to sit comfortably in what is the widest rear seat in the GLE’s class. The split seat backs can be folded down to create up to 60.7 cubic feet of carpeted luggage space, the largest of any coupé in the world. The Panoramic sliding sunroof is yet another great feature that adds to the already impressive internal setup of the GLE 43. The entire interior is complimented by the ambient lighting provided throughout the vehicle. As we started the 3 L – V6 Cylinder Engine, we could not help but smile at the sound of this potent machine purring like a lion. The master technicians at Mercedes have developed an engine that offers 390 horsepower at 5500 to 6000 rpm with 520 Nm or torque at 1800 to 4000 rpm. The result is one powerful vehicle capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and holding a top speed of 250 km/h. Not only does one have plenty of speed on offer with this Mercedes, but an incredibly smooth ride thanks to the automatic transmission, complimented by the sense of control provided by the grip and handling of this sturdy vehicle. The various driving modes on offer ensure maximum performance is available in a variety of environments. As one would assume, Mercedes-Benz have assured the occupants of the GLE 43 are kept safe at all times on the road with the inclusion of multiple advanced safety features. These include Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Pre-Safe™ Plus, Distronic Plus™ and an available Parking Assist Package complete with its Surround View System. It’s probably more difficult than ever to live in a simple meaningful way. There are so many distractions, temptations and high tech gadgets intended to make life easier, but, in actual fact probably cause more confusion and complication more often than not! We adorn ourselves with designer brands and endeavour to be voguish - which is not to say that this is wrong. However, I think people of a certain age hark back to times when life was more simple and more of our time was spent focused on relationships and activities which are all but lost in modern society. ‘Virtual Life’ which is found throughout social media has become more significant and influential than real life. Even the majority of news and literature is accessed through digital medium. There comes a point where we have to strip this down and focus our behaviour in a different way. For many people it’s far easier to be generous with money than time or affection. We neglect relationships or become too focussed on our own aspirations and needs. I and me take president over you and us. So perhaps it’s time we all did an audit of our conduct . Do you take time to listen to people that matter? Do you prefer to stare at a screen rather than your partner or loved ones ? Is checking Facebook your first thought as you wake up? What proportion of your life is spent helping someone else ? Has what you have become more important than who you are ? If any of these resonate with you perhaps it’s time to start a metaphorical ‘fast’ each day where you starve yourself of social media or abstain from everyday demands and focus completely on loved ones. Simplifying your life might allow you to focus more acutely on what is important and prioritise. Hopefully the outcome will see simple pleasures intensified , generosity will take over not just fiscally but spiritually and emotionally. Caring
