Editor’s Letter And so we’ve reached the middle of the year. Can you believe that half of 2021 has passed? We’re not getting much flying, but time is undoubtedly having a blast in this department! June is our Female Empowerment issue, and we pay tribute to these incredible human beings that are capable of bringing life into this world, caring for this life, and, most of the time, also fighting for a place at the forefront of the workforce. Multitasking while spreading beauty in the world with their style and unique touch. Be it their fashion choices and pretty makeup or their natural warmth and easy smile. We spoke to some fabulous women, and we share their stories with you (pg50). The fashion pages bring styles to inspire your office wear and the warmer days that are upon us (pg12). We also help you to revamp your beauty cabinet – summer is here! Glow up with the most beautiful new makeup lines out there (pg34). Talking about heat certainly makes you wonder how to get through it and make the best of the sunny days. Going for a lavish daycation is the answer that you deserve and need! (pg74). Due to the new rules, some services might not be available, so contact them before you make your plans. They will resume on June 11, subject to Government approval. We also bring our monthly food spread and motoring experience. Enjoy your reading and think about your plans for the six months left of the year. Whatever your resolutions were at the beginning of the year, time is ticking!

For the Love of Time The Celtica Heart Lady is a new watch creation dedicated to the Charriol woman.

28

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Charriol’s Celtica Heart Lady chronograph has a special place at the heart of the maison’s iconic watch collection. The timepiece celebrates bold and sporting femininity that cultivates ‘The Art of Living Differently’ with grace and modernity. The woman that wears this piece is passionate about thrilling experiences and capable of moving from sophisticated situations to more relaxed ones, such as playing her favourite sport. The Celtica Heart Lady quartz chronograph, whose distinctive codes reflect a touch of extravagance and softness, goes right to the heart of the Charriol woman. A feminine woman who is also daring in her choices. The Celtica Heart Lady is an irresistible, iconic creation that symbolises Charriol’s move into high-end women’s watchmaking. Its 37mm steel case, plated in yellow or rose gold and featuring heart-shaped push-

pieces, is complete with white ceramic inserts. The design plays on the contrast between the matte finish adorning the 12 notches on its polished bezel and the polished finish of the case and attachments. The hours and minutes hands run on an anthracite or opaline dial equipped with three oversized tone-on-tone Arabic numerals. The chronograph’s direct-drive seconds hand, the tip of which is decorated with a white heart, brushes over the diamond hour markers that punctuate the dial, echoing the small-seconds disc at six o’clock composed of three openwork hearts. The back case of this detailed timepiece can be engraved to order with a personal message, which will be known only to its owner once the exclusive signature bracelet, featuring six steel cables, is adjusted on her wrist. An additional sign of distinction that adds unique allure to those who consistently combine precision of style and passion for life.

NEW

CHAPTER Maurice Lacroix’s promised new timepiece is finally here. After the launch of the quartz version, this historical model has been given a new, sharper look with an automatic movement, giving rise to the AIKON Automatic and AIKON Automatic Chronograph.

R

enowned for its high-quality designs and innovation, the watch brand Maurice Lacroix has worked on the AIKON to give an unparalleled perceived value to its finishings. For the first time, Maurice Lacroix presents a complete range of AIKON watches with automatic movements: a three-hand model with a date function and a chronograph with day and date. Although based on the design of the AIKON quartz, Maurice Lacroix has created a whole new watch. Impactful Design The AIKON collection is the descendant of the Calypso. This benchmark piece — the brand’s best-selling model of the 1990s — already incorporated the AIKON’s main distinctive features: the integrated water-resistant case, the flat sapphire crystal encircled by the famous six-arm bezel, the M logo in 30

www.ohlala-magazine.com

relief on the leather straps, and exceptionally high-quality production. In 2016, Maurice Lacroix revamped these iconic features with the AIKON quartz. The transformation continues with even more details, more remarkable finesse and increased value. With their dynamic angles and pronounced polished and satin-finished surfaces, the AIKON Automatic models have a real presence on the wrist. They also feature a newly designed flexible five-link steel bracelet. Incredibly soft and supple, it suits all wrists. The AIKON Automatic models are eye-catching, from the bracelet to the case. The energetic, taut curves clearly communicate the modern, masculine dimension imparted to these models by Maurice Lacroix’s design. Crafted entirely from steel, they feature satin finishes, while the edges and six signature arms on the bezel are polished. On the chronograph version, this dynamic continues in the design of the crown and pushers, which are sharp and hexagonal yet smooth to the touch.

Powerful Products The AIKON Automatic presents a diameter of 42mm. Water-resistant to 200m, its steel case is assorted with three dial colours: blue, silver or anthracite grey. These shades blend seamlessly with the five-link steel bracelet or the black, blue or brown leather straps, each decorated with an applied Maurice Lacroix M logo. Both versions come with a subtly bouchonné butterfly clasp to give the owner even greater comfort. The AIKON Automatic Chronograph has an even more robust look. Its large 44mm diameter is the result of its chronograph calibre with automatic winding. Five versions are available from the launch, with dials in one of three colours: blue, silver or black. The models with a silvered dial are enhanced with blue chronograph counters to produce an extremely on-trend panda dial effect. The AIKON Automatic models introduce the EasyChange quick bracelet change system to make the pieces even more practical and ergonomic. You can easily change bracelets to suit your mood, whims or clothing, thanks to its bar with two pins. An Iconic Spirit Launched as a complete range, the AIKON Automatic models are an assertive new addition. Modern and refined yet offering a solid character and highquality finishings, Maurice Lacroix has designed these two new watches as contemporary icons and everyday essentials. Striking from the very first glance, the AIKON Automatic and AIKON Automatic Chronograph are resolutely modern timepieces. Their unique presence demonstrates Maurice Lacroix’s signature design, innovation and craftsmanship. AN ODE TO

WOODY SCENTS The calligrapher Tarek Benaoum collaborates once again with Guerlain to create an exclusive motif for the Absolus d’Orient collection.

The three iconic woody fragrances,Santal Royal, Oud Essentiel

and Patchouli Ardent, get a packaging revamp, that revolves around a reinterpretation of Guerlain’s emblematic G, by visual artist Tarek Benaoum. In 2019, for the fifth anniversary of Santal Royal, the calligrapher reinvented the House’s iconic bee bottle. Now, two years after their first meeting, Guerlain and Tarek have come together again for a new collaboration on the Absolus d’Orient collection. Thierry Wasser, Guerlain’s Master Perfumer, created the fragrances as an homage to the most beautiful Oriental raw materials. The two creators, one that speaks the language of smells and the other of calligraphy, give these Arabic inspired scents a deep meaning, embracing culture, heritage and tradition. The fragrances are a celebration of woody notes throughout the Absolus d’Orient collection. Between shadow and light, Thierry’s creations require an intimate understanding of the ingredients. Before designing each composition, the master perfumer dives into each raw essence to explore its scent and soak in every nuance. Thanks to this complete understanding of the raw material, he can then amplify its quintessential nature and highlight its richness as well as the 40

www.ohlala-magazine.com

beauty of its wood grains. The sumptuousness of sandalwood. The complexity of oud. The depth of patchouli. Santal Royal plays with the contrasts between a luminous bouquet of jasmine and rose, deep leather and sandalwood notes and an oud accord. Oud Essentiel radiates its deep and complex fragrance with smooth notes of rose, leather and incense in a powerful aroma. Patchouli Ardent offers a luminous, bright and vibrant play on patchouli that is energised with pepper, and marries rose absolute with a majestic accord of musks and leather. Tarek also enhances the noble woods using gold-coloured pigments that emanate pure light to reveal the wood’s sombre shades. Through elegance and sophistication, the artist’s creations reveal contrasts and bring out the raw beauty of these natural materials.

The Power of Touch When we were finally allowed to be pampered again, this editor was lucky enough to be treated to a relaxing massage at Dessange, her favourite beauty spot in town.

42

T

he excitement of going for a massage again is difficult to express in one word. I will try to describe this amazing feeling by taking you on each step of my Organic Olfactory Massage at this fantastic urban spa, impeccable salon, and state-of-art gym. By now, I am sure you already know where I’m talking about – Dessange! Yes, spas are open, and this beloved destination is offering its signature massages once again. However, only if you have your ‘green badge’ (to prove that you’ve had your two vaccine doses and 14 days have passed after the second) ready to be shown at Dessange’s reception. After that, your temperature is checked and the health protocols filled. I was then accompanied to the changing area and given my own locker where I could find my personal care kit. A fluffy robe (the fleeciest I’ve ever seen), a pair of soft disposable slippers, shower cap, Dessange personalised bag and a few other cute things that you might need. I got ready and entered a private area where you find the spa’s treatment rooms and stunning facilities. My therapist, Ercie, and Joie, the spa manager, were waiting for me with beautiful

and welcoming smiles. Both the ambience and the warm reception put me in the mood to disconnect from the world outside and focus on myself. At the spa area, you need to fill a treatment consultation card with your personal information. With this in hand, the therapists get to know you better and prepare the best treatment for you. Joie wanted me to embrace my experience fully and suggested that I use the facilities before starting my massage to warm up to the whole ‘me-time’ session. First, I took a shower to remove any impurities and clean my skin to enter the Jacuzzi. The warm water, calming atmosphere, with low lights, and the enticing smell were definitely doing their job. Ercie suggested that I move to the steam room for 15 minutes, then go to the cold (freezing) pool across from the Jacuzzi. I have to confess that I am a bit claustrophobic, and I didn’t last the 15 minutes. So I, unfortunately, missed the benefits of this kind of treatment. I also had to leave the sauna experience for another time (if I ever feel comfortable in a closed humid place). She then suggested I return to the Jacuzzi, and I was more than glad to comply and stay there, relaxing every muscle in my body.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

43

It was time to head to the massage room, and I couldn’t wait any longer. I was eager to relax fully (I was already halfway there with all the ‘Jacuzziing’ and the chilled feeling). Ercie explained that the Organic Olfactory Massage was going to take 90 minutes. Can you imagine having 90 minutes just to yourself ? No phone? No emails or kids calling ‘mummy’? I was over the moon with the idea. The treatment objectives of this specific massage follow an aromatherapy process that combines breathing and healing techniques for pure relaxation. The therapist uses essential oils paired with massage oil and crystal stones placed at the client’s chakras to improve and rebalance her body and mood. And here I can tell you that this massage is not focused only on your body but also on your whole being. It pairs sensations with proper pressure in specific areas. Ercie told me that the massage is done with three different oils, and I should smell each of them to choose one. The idea here is that your sense of smell will determine what you need the most. My senses selected the uplifting one, which is composed of grapeseed oil that contains high levels of vitamin E, helping to reduce cell damage from free radicals. It also has lemon essential oil that mitigates stress when used aromatically as a massage oil. And orange blossom essential oil indicated for mental relaxation and relief for anxiety and nervousness. I guess I did pick the right oil without even knowing this was its purpose. Ercie then proceeded to put this oil on the burner to create a whole ambience dedicated to this uplifting mission. This is a full-body massage, so get ready for 90 minutes of an actual state of relaxation. Ercie has a calming nature; while she talks, you already feel that you should tune-up to this kind of vibe. The soft music and Ercie’s touch put me in contact with my own being. She moved as if she was dancing in a series of motions that made me wonder how many hands she acquires during this process. Everything is well-choreographed, and you feel involved in this parallel world where you are the only one that matters at that moment. The only problem that I see in this journey is that it ends. Yes, to my sadness Ercie has other things to do, and I have to go back to phone, emails and never-ending mummy calls. However, I go back to my reality (I have to say that you need some time to re-adapt to the fast-paced lifestyle), feeling at my best! Re-energised and ready to face my everyday life with relaxed muscles and mind. 44

Happy Hair, Happy You! Since February 2020, the pandemic pretty much took our pampering havens, beauty salons, away from us for a while. To visit one of the best after such deprivation brings another level of happiness. OHLALA’S Layal Al-Mahmoud experienced the house of hair experts, the famous TONI&GUY.

G

ladly acting like models, we entered City Centre Bahrain and headed towards a big name in the world of hair care that implies trust and quality – TONI&GUY. Walking in, you are received with a warm welcome that uplifts your mood on the spot. A swift registration process, temperature check, apply sanitiser, and follow all Covid-19 precautions and within a couple of minutes, we were shown to our seats. The place is not huge; but you can certainly feel the luxury and discipline. While I wanted to go for a short and smooth look, my daughter made a perfect model for long, thick, curly hair. We had a professional consultation with two of the salon’s top experts and the decisions were made; it was a cut for me and an Intense Boost Treatment for my 14-year-old. I adore short hair but would not trust just any hair stylist to give me a

boy cut! At TONI&GUY, and in the hands of the senior stylist, Clint, I was relaxed and assured. He explained what he was planning to do and made sure I was okay with it. His talent has been evidenced with every compliment I have since received from friends and strangers alike. I walked out a happy client, indeed. Curly hair, on the other hand, can be a challenge. We were desperate for a smoothing treatment that could ensure easy handling without compromising the beauty of the curls. Taking the advice of the knowledgeable stylists, we steered away from heavy treatments which are not recommended for under 16s and instead opted for a purely organic treatment that can be applied monthly to minimise the dryness naturally and diminish the frizziness via hydration, repair and restoration. A recommendation I highly appreciated as a mother, placing the well-being of my daughter to the forefront.

BEAUTY Spotlight Intense Boost is a well-designed treatment from KeraStraight, a star product at London Fashion Week. It is a combination of a protein mask and a moisture mask. A marriage that gives the hair softness and shine with zero chemicals. Amen to that! The process took about two hours from the hair wash until the Instagram photo before leaving. The protein mask was applied to clean hair generously, after which, the hair was blow-dried to help seal it in. Then came the Soufflé from Label.m, the house brand, to loosen up the curls a bit, while the Rescue Crème finalised the treatment by repairing, hydrating, and protecting the locks. Luxurious or average, let us admit that we are all emotionally attached to our salons. At least, I am. I feel lost when a salon I like closes and I have to search for another one. It is like relationships, they take time. And you might never find ‘the one’! Well, trust me, at TONI&GUY you will be in talented, experienced and good hands indeed at a very reasonable price. A knowledgeable and friendly team that is ready to satisfy your hair desires. It might be the ‘one salon’ for you! Book your next hair appointment now and try it yourself. Nail care is also available. (The spa services will resume on June 11, subject to Government approval). For more information or to make an appointment, please call TONI&GUY on 1700 1700 and 1701 1701.

SHINY DIAMOND ON PEXELS

What category does your makeup or skincare fall into? And what is the difference between them? OHLALA explains what is behind the brands in your beauty cabinet.

48

T

he cosmetics industry has been going through a significant change in the past years. The demand for products that aren’t too synthetic and, often, concern for the well-being of animals has changed how things are done in the beauty world. According to Statista, the global market value for natural cosmetics and personal care positively increased from almost USD34.5 billion in 2018 to roughly USD54.5 billion dollars expected for the year 2027. The market has changed, and new terminologies and classifications have been added to product labels. Formulas have been adjusted. Well-known brands have transformed their products to cater to this public demand, while new brands have conquered this growing market. We untangle their nomenclatures, so you can understand what is really behind the products you buy. Organic Cosmetics The primary criterion in obtaining organic cosmetic certification is the proportion of natural ingredients in the final product, which must be at least 95 per cent. The second criterion relates to the ratio of those natural ingredients that are also organically produced. They must make up at least 10 per cent, but in some cases, all the natural ingredients are organic.

BEAUTY Column Cruelty-Free Products labelled cruelty-free mean that no animal went through painful testing for the brand to be released in the market. However, this category is quite tricky. Since 2009, tests on animals for cosmetics ingredients have been banned in the EU under the Cosmetics Regulation. However, to sell their products in specific countries which do require this form of testing, companies need to hire a third party to carry out the tests. So, if you want to support brands that don’t have this practice, you must research a bit further and see if they sell in markets that don’t run under this kind of regulation. Also, if the brand belongs to a bigger group, you might want to skip it because the product you are purchasing may not be tested, but others in the group portfolio might. You can go to: www.crueltyfree.peta.org/ or access www.crueltyfreekitty.com/list-of-crueltyfree-brands/ to research if your beloved brand is animal friendly.

Product based on Natural Ingredients In this category, up to 99.99 per cent of the ingredients are natural. The majority of the components must be of natural origin for a product to fall into this category.

The truth is that if you are looking to embrace one type of cosmetic, you must research what is behind it to see if it really falls into the category you are looking for. Even after many rules, there isn’t a universal labelling style, and they can be confusing.

SHINY DIAMOND ON PEXELS

Natural Cosmetics These products are easy to classify, as 100 per cent of their ingredients must be natural, with no artificial additives.

Vegan These aren’t made with any ingredient derived from any animal origin, such as honey, beeswax, collagen, and lanolin. They are replaced by materials derived from plants or minerals. However, be aware that not all vegan cosmetics are necessarily cruelty-free.

hroughout much of history, women had fewer career opportunities than men, but some found a way to stand out and forge a path to create their own space, opening the way for others to follow in their steps. Women such as Marie Curie, who, after finishing her high school diploma, had to enrol at the Flying University, a college that welcomed female students, but was constantly changing locations to avoid detection by authorities. At that time, it was still illegal for women to receive higher education in Poland. She later moved to France and, together with her husband, developed the theory of radioactivity at the beginning of 1900s. She was the first woman to receive a Physics Nobel Prize. In the sports’ arena, we highlight Mildred Zaharias, better known as Babe, who teed her way onto the golf scene in 1934, when she was the first woman to play in an all-male PGA Tour event (the world’s premier membership organisation for touring professional golfers). To this day, Babe holds the record for the longest winning streak in golf history (male or female), a feat she accomplished between 1946 and 1947. Have you heard of the Ladies Professional Golf Association? Well, it was Babe, along with 12 other female golfers, who formed the pro tour in 1950. Recent notable names include Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away last year. An attorney, judge and associate justice of the Supreme Court, she was committed to the principle of equal justice under the law that transformed the legal landscape in the United States – mainly for women. She was one of nine women in a class of 500 students at Harvard Law School and finished at the top of her class when she graduated as a transfer to Columbia Law School. Even with high grades, she struggled to find employment and it was only in 1963 that she became a professor at Rutgers Law school, where she started to combat gender discrimination. She was a life-long and relentless fighter for civil rights. When looking into history, you find many more names on different fronts, Catherine The Great, Jane Austen, Sojourner Truth, Ada Lovelace, Edith Cowan, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, Amelia Earhart, and so many others. They are all an inspiration to the heroes we have today, be they successful in their modern careers or in their support for other women. Just look around; you are sure to find more amazing and empowered women than you can count on two hands. Whether the someone you look up to is a famous name or even a friend or family member or just someone you have admiration for, like your own mother. This month in OHLALA, we’ve selected a few women in our country that have made significant achievements in their fields. Explore the following pages to get to know them a little better.

Huda Mirza LIVING LIFE AT ITS FULLEST Life is composed of all the experiences we go through, in the personal and work areas. Huda Mirza, Director of Talent & Culture at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, shares how she embraces these two aspects in her life, as one.

52

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Insights “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, one must be brave enought to initiate.” – Huda Mirza

OHLALA - Tell us a bit about yourself and how you reached the position you are in today. How was the path to arrive here? Huda Mirza - This opportunity made me realise that everything has to be valued, and I am very blessed to have this life. Speaking of me, I would describe myself as a keen observer, a very passionate and well-motivated person. I always look to things with a positive perspective. It is said that difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. So here I am as Director of Talent & Culture in one of the renowned Accor properties – Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. As a leader, I lead by facilitating open communication and bringing out the best in every Heartist (a special Accor programme made for employees). I lead by delegating and making others better. As it is said, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, one must be brave enough to initiate and put effort to achieve his/her dream. I never let myself go down the path of glorying in my success, as I always believe that life begins at the end of our comfort zones. OHLALA - What have you achieved that makes you the proudest in your career? HM - Being the Director of Talent & Culture, I feel proud to be the helping hand and voice of around 250 Heartists who are dedicated and motivated towards the organisation’s growth. I work on the basis that: “There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed,” as said by Woodrow T. Wilson. Kindness and courtesy towards my Heartists is my motto. My most significant work comes when I get to assist them. OHLALA - How do you feel about having conquered so much as a woman? HM - I go hard for what I am passionate about. Patience and fortitude conquer all things despite gender. All things are difficult before they become easy. I have learnt what is worth waiting for to have come this far. I love the Marilyn Monroe quote: “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” OHLALA - Is there any woman that served as an inspiration to you? HM - I take Michelle Obama as my inspiration. I believe in her saying: “No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women

and deprives itself of the contribution of half its citizens.” Besides her, I truly admire Malala, a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize Laureate. I respect her bravery. OHLALA - What’s your motto in life? HM - My motto is never to give up and keep trying. There is a famous Japanese proverb, ‘Vision without action is a daydream’. I work for a cause, not for applause. I believe if you look for good things, they will increase. I love living in the moment and work with a happy and joyful heart and free mind. OHLALA - How do you balance your personal life and work? HM - There is no such thing as work-life balance; it is all life. The balance has to be within the self. Every time I get home, I see my family cheered up; their energy strengthens me. Family is my priority no matter what. No one on their deathbed ever said that they wished they had spent more time at the office. We should never get so busy making a living that we forget to live. Time spent with friends and family brings me happiness, which ultimately shows results in my work. OHLALA - What do you do that allows to you disconnect from work? HM - Quality time with my family is the greatest break from my work. Besides, I enjoy hobbies of reading books and travelling. During my leisure time, I invest time in myself. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own to-do list. OHLALA - What piece of advice do you give to young ladies out there starting their careers? HM - Never doubt yourself, don’t let anyone question your capabilities. You, as a young lady, have more confidence and belief in yourself to show the world. Working hard for something you don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something you love is passion. Always have the courage to pursue your passion. The key is not to prioritise what’s on your schedule but to schedule your priorities. Some mistakes are worth making for your career; never be scared of failures.

Mary -Justine WOMEN FOR WOMEN When women support each other, incredible things happen. And that’s what Mary-Justine Todd, Founder and Executive Director of Shamsaha, practices every day.

54

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Insights “Being alone during a time of need might be one of the worst things that can happen to someone.” – Mary-Justine Todd OHLALA - Tell us a bit about yourself and how you came up with Shamsaha? How was the path to arrive at this non-profit organisation? Marie-Justine Todd - While living in New York City, I was a volunteer at Columbia University Hospital’s rape and violence crisis response programme called DOVE. During my time as a crisis advocate, I ultimately became the President of the Advisory Board, learning in great detail how the programme functioned. I left NYC and embarked on an Eat Pray Love-style adventure, taking me through many countries and eventually to Bahrain. I kept with me, however, the small programme manual from DOVE. I started poking around and found that, although there were many great organisations in Bahrain, there were no crisis programmes for victims of abuse. So, with the help of my husband and many Bahraini women I met along the way, we launched Shamsaha’s full-scale operations in 2016, making it the first and only domestic and sexual violence crisis response programme in the Middle East. OHLALA - What have you achieved that makes you the proudest since Shamsaha was created? MJT - Women are hurting. People are suffering. And being alone during a time of need might be one of the worst things that can happen to someone. So, I am most proud of the help we have provided for women who otherwise might have been totally by themselves. I am pleased that in a country where it has never been done before, we have managed to bring together hundreds of women, expatriate and Bahrainis, to help thousands of women during what may have been one of the most challenging moments of their lives. OHLALA - What do you think was the biggest challenge you had to face? MJT - Most definitely financial challenges. I started Shamsaha with nothing more than an idea for a programme, hope to do something good, and less than BD300. But over the last five years, we have gone from just me working out of my living room to a 220sq/m office [sponsored by Harbour Towers West], eight staff members and 140-plus volunteers, with thousands of women served. But it didn’t happen without great struggle and great partnerships. And now we are launching our regional expansion programme, hoping to make our services available to potentially millions of women over the coming decade throughout the GCC for the first time. OHLALA - Speaking of Shamsaha’s expansion programme, tell us more about your partnership with the L’Oréal Fund for Women? MJT - As part of L’Oréal’s ongoing efforts and commitment to supporting women’s rights, the L’Oréal Fund for Women has partnered with Shamsaha to help our mission to protect, advocate, and empower women in Bahrain and

across the GCC. We are working on expanding Shamsaha’s crisis programme services, virtually and in-person, to the UAE, KSA, Oman, and Kuwait. We will also utilise the sponsorship from the fund to streamline the further development of our soon-to-be-launched mobile application. The app will facilitate emotional, logistical, and informational support to domestic and sexual abuse victims across the region. OHLALA - Is there any woman that served as an inspiration to you? MJT - My mother passed away this year on March 15. Because of Covid-19, I could not be with her during the last year, or even in the final months of her life, since her nursing home was on a total lockdown. Watching my mother die over WhatsApp was the hardest thing I have ever had to endure. But as I contemplate her life and what she has given to me over the years, I have come to realise that nobody served as a better role model than she was. She taught me to be kind and to be bold. She taught me that I could do anything I wanted, and that no country was too far and no person was too different. She taught me to treat people with dignity and respect and always, without fail, to be honest. I would not be a fraction of the person I am today without her steadfast model of an ethical and principled person. OHLALA - What’s your motto in life? MJT - CTW – change the world! OHLALA - What do you do that allows you to disconnect from work? MJT - The best thing that helps me, and I believe has the potential to help many people, is spending time with my dog. I think that we have a great deal to learn from animals, and spending time with them helps human beings connect to the natural world and reconnect with aspects of ourselves that sometimes get lost in this digital age. I also teach yoga, so about five to six mornings a week, I am doing or teaching yoga from my home-based studio. This helps a great deal to disconnect. OHLALA - What piece of advice do you give to young ladies out there starting their careers? MJT - Remember that nothing comes easy. And nothing is ever as easy or perfect as it looks on social media. Whatever it is that you want to do, or to be be it a lawyer, an international aid worker, a mother, a mechanic, a mountain climber, it will take work. Don’t take shortcuts. Don’t get illegitimate online ‘certificates’ and assume that looking good on Instagram is enough. Do the work that is required to become highly qualified. Know your trade and be prepared to work hard. Play the long game – not the short.

Nazia Mustafa

Starting a fashion brand is a challenging task. However, Nazia Mustafa, the owner of Vestire, tells us about her fruitful story.

58

OHLALA Insights

“My advice is to be passionate about what you do; this is the key to success.” – Nazia Mustafa

OHLALA - Tell us a bit about yourself and how you reached the position you are in today. How was the path to arrive here? Nazia Mustafa - I am a fashion curator and owner of Moda Vestire (a multibrand conceptional boutique) and Vestire, my fashion line. My journey is a long one. I started my carrier back in India with a boutique fusion concept there, and then we moved to the Middle Eastern market in Bahrain. OHLALA - What have you achieved that makes you the proudest in your career? NM - When people start recognising our unique products made with this fusion outfit concept, and yet at very competitive prices, they leave their positive testimonials and good customer feedback. These things make me feel proud. OHLALA - What do you think was the biggest challenge you had to face? NM - The biggest challenge for me right now is meeting our clients’ expectations and our cost control. OHLALA - How do you feel about having conquered so much as a woman? Is there any woman that served as an inspiration to you? NM - The fashion field is a very competitive one, and it isn’t easy to thrive, but I am pleased to have a growing brand and see it expanding. And of course, without any doubt, my biggest inspiration is my mother.

OHLALA - What’s your main goal in your career? NM - To make Vestire a global brand. OHLALA - How do you balance your personal life and work? NM - In the Asian and Arab culture, family is the social fabric, and it’s the same for me. The support of my husband and cheerleading of my children has helped me scale heights that I didn’t think were possible. At the same time, my independence taught my children to respect and heed women’s talent as I work side by side with my husband. OHLALA - What do you do that allows to you disconnect from work? NM - During the weekends, I dedicate my time to my family and friends, with no business during these days of the week. OHLALA - What piece of advice do you give to young ladies out there starting their careers? NM - My advice is to be passionate about what you do; this is the key to success. In the fashion field, more specifically, I would say that you need to find out who your competitors are. You need to learn how to follow the fashion and retail calendar and be realistic about your customers, who you are designing for. And last but not least, learn more about the business itself, what is behind the designs.

Rahma Shirazi WORLD OF GEMS AND GOLD Jewellery is imprinted in her DNA, and Rahma Shirazi, a director at Bahrain Jewellery Centre and founder of RAZ, knew since she was little that creating beautiful pieces was in her future. 62

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Insights “Be passionate about what you do so that it becomes your daily pleasure.” – Rahma Shirazi

OHLALA -Tell us a bit about yourself and how you reached the position you are in today. How was the path to arrive here? Rahma Shirazi - I am a director at Bahrain Jewellery Centre (BJC) and the founder of my own jewellery line, RAZ. My work consists primarily of taking on commissioned pieces as well as launching an annual collection. Jewellery is very much in my blood; as a young girl, I enjoyed spending time at Bahrain Jewellery Centre, the family business established by my late father in 1978. Growing up inside this industry and having a passion for artistic creation paved the way for me to pursue my studies at Central Saint Martins - University of the Arts in the UK, where I received my BA in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing. I then continued my studies and became GIA-certified in Coloured Stones, Diamond Grading, and Jewellery Rendering. Additionally, I completed an intensive course in stone setting at the School of Gemmology and Allied Studies in the UK, and I have been happily creating ever since. OHLALA - What have you achieved that makes you the proudest in your career? RS - There are many things that I have achieved so far that I am truly proud of. For one, I am incredibly proud of the trust and relationships I have built with my clients and jewellers in the industry. Another aspect I am proud of is that I am always true to myself and my designs, despite what is currently trending in the market. When it comes to my pieces, colour is an essential factor for me. I love using a combination of playful hues to create a twist of modernism with a classic touch. Minimal metal is key in my work, and my pieces are made primarily in titanium by artisan manufacturers. I am genuinely proud when people come to recognise the distinguished identity of RAZ that I have worked so hard on. OHLALA - What do you think was the biggest challenge you had to face? RS - I don’t find myself drawn to the typical or expected ways of creating jewellery. I have great appreciation for quality craftsmanship and using traditional techniques in ways that differ from the norm. I love to see how my clients interpret my creativity as original artisanal pieces that are appreciated and cherished. Being different and finding the balance between old and new techniques challenges me to represent my art through my jewellery. Respecting my clients’ requirements and preserving their stories through my work but still allowing myself to maintain my identity and style in their pieces is my greatest challenge.

OHLALA - How do you feel about conquering so much as a woman? Is there any woman that served as an inspiration to you? RS - Every woman is able to achieve her dreams, and I believe limitations are a thing of the past. There are many inspiring women, especially in Bahrain, who are leaders in their field. By all these women excelling in what they are best at, they have been able to achieve their goals. With this being said, I think we are surrounded by inspiring and hardworking women who motivate us with their qualities each and every day. OHLALA - What’s your motto in life? RS - “So many things are possible just as long as you don’t know they’re impossible.” – Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth. I believe that nothing in life, no matter how complicated, challenging, and out of reach, is impossible. Everyone can make their dream come true if they are persistent. The key is to be passionate about what you do so that it becomes your daily pleasure. OHLALA - How do you balance your personal life and work? RS - It has never been an issue for me to find a balance between work life and personal life. I have somehow managed to dedicate time to both without compromising one over the other. OHLALA - What do you do that allows you to disconnect from work? RS - I can’t really disconnect from my work as I enjoy being creative and I am constantly seeking and absorbing inspiration on a daily basis in one way or another. However, the best way to disengage from work is to spend time with my family when I solely focus on them. OHLALA - What piece of advice do you give to young ladies out there starting their careers? RS - Part of the process is always to learn and grow and make mistakes along the way. Discipline is necessary to achieve your goals. You have to be accepting of failure to succeed. Strength comes from picking yourself up after the mistakes, and that is when progress is made, and goals are achieved. I have made decisions that weren’t necessarily perfect, but every experience has pushed me to learn how to work hard independently, accomplishing my dreams as a woman.

Essence Nature has been an inspiration to many designers and Middle Eastern brand By Dana Al Ansari celebrates the peacock in the new collection. By Dana Al Ansari’s latest collection is called Grace, a fusion between elegant simplicity and unique inspiration. The new pieces have been created around the colours and beauty of peacocks. The peacock symbolises self-expression, integrity, love, and pride translated onto clean silhouettes catering to the hot days of spring and summer. Flowy kaftans and two-piece sets with capes give a whimsical touch to the line. While statement details such as high collars and ruffles are fused with thick lines in contrasting shades, emphasising the splendour of simplicity. The colour palette depicts nature at its best through shades of walnut, olive, forest, peacock blue and royal blue, blended with tones of amber and plum – an ode to the natural hues found in the peacock’s habitat. The collection stays true to By Dana Al Ansari’s signature style of understated elegance. The Grace creations exude modern femininity through delicate shapes for an easy-going yet sophisticated look.

Taking the

Maharaja Express The best way to visit India these days is to travel there through flavours. And that’s a guaranteed journey when dining at Nirvana, located in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, as this editor describes her food expedition to this dining spot. How often do you have a weeknight out with your loved one or friends? For me, that’s close to never. However, I know a couple that, no matter what, Tuesday nights they go out, just the two of them, and enjoy some good quality time together and recharge to end the week in good spirits, always accompanied by good food. This is something I would like to incorporate into my life, be it with my husband or good friends. The Indian restaurant Nirvana at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, was the best choice to start this new tradition.

76

www.ohlala-magazine.com

I believe that good food can improve anyone’s mood and make everything better. As Indian cuisine enthusiasts, my husband and I were thrilled to head to this much-awarded restaurant. The weather was not as pleasant as we would like, and sitting outside was not an option but, as vaccinated residents, we got to dine inside this lavish place. The décor is a mix of grand Maharaja style and cosy sofas in tones of red. The lighting adds intimacy to the ambience – perfect for a date night!

CHIC Eats The eatery’s amazing staff greeted us. Ali and Sangharsh made sure we were well taken care of the entire evening. I have to admit that we were over spoiled by them and by the maestro of the show, Chef Mahipal Singh. We started our dining journey by ordering our drinks. The menu at Nirvana brings exotic options infused with Indian flavours that we were eager to try. We went for their mocktail versions of some regulars to taste the different elements. Ali surprised us with Chatpata Madira, a mix of lemon juice, ginger ale and Indian spices. The eye-catching detail was the green chillies split in half that played with our taste buds and that I am sure will become a common ingredient in our drinks from now on. The refreshment reminded us of a sophisticated version of a mojito. The other drink we had is called Gulabi Sharaab and came with a red petal inside, giving us a hint on one of the ingredients – rose syrup! It also had apple and orange juice and a tropical fruit punch. It was on the sweeter side, but an excellent pairing to the food that was about to start arriving at our table. The first entrée, the Mango and Avocado Salad, was refreshing, but not the regular style you find in many places during summertime. This appetiser has secret ingredients, the distinct spices from Indian cuisine. You might think they would clash with the freshness of the main ingredients; however, their marriage is a very successful one, giving a sparkle to your taste buds. The second appetiser of the night was the Chowk Ki Tikki, a pan-fried potato and pea patty served with tamarind sauce. Again, the dish surprised by the perfection of the flavours; it does give you a hash-brown kind of vibe, but imagine all the beautiful colours that the Indian culture has and apply this visual concussion to your palate. And because Shuruaat (appetisers) are never enough, we tried the Jheenga Til Tinka, a deep-fried Gulf prawn, tossed in sesame seeds, accompanied by sweet chilli sauce. The prawn was crunchy on the outside and moist inside, just as it should be.

77

CHIC Eats It was time to move to the main dishes and, as per the row of mouthwatering starters, we knew this would be a feast to be remembered. I love Dal, a popular Indian dish prepared in many different ways, using different types of lentils or peas. We were served the Dal Tadka, made with yellow and black lentils, cooked with herbs and spices, served with a dash of cumin, garlic and coriander seeds. What I liked about this Dal is that it doesn’t contain dairy and is way lighter than some other versions. My husband, on the other hand, loves seafood and went for the Erha Kari, prepared with Gulf prawns simmered in a creamy coconut curry tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves. According to Chef Mahipal, it’s one of Nirvana’s best-sellers, and my husband had no doubt why. The mix of spices and the subtle touch of coconut delivers a balanced yet remarkable blend of flavours. However, the star of the main dishes selection, in my opinion, was the Bhindi Do Pyaza, fresh okra cooked with baby onions, tomato and flavoured with Indian spices. Okra is an overlooked vegetable in western cuisine and I find it challenging to cook and deal with all the slime, but Chef Mahipal and his team know what they are doing, and the dish was spectacular. We couldn’t leave without trying some of the desserts that you only find in outstanding Indian restaurants. We picked Rasmalai that consists of poached dumplings of fresh cottage cheese immersed in sweet milk sauce, my husband’s favourite Indian dessert. The texture of these soft white cushions that melt in your mouth cannot be compared to any other type of sweet; it’s unique and a must-have if you haven’t tried it yet. And if you are acquainted with this kind of cuisine, you must know Kulfi, a traditional pistachio flavoured ice cream that, at Nirvana, is dressed with rose syrup.

78

www.ohlala-magazine.com

It was time to wrap up. We thanked the whole team profusely for their attention and exceptional service, not to mention the delicious food. The eatery is one of the 13 dining destinations at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, which means that we have a few date nights ahead of us to try them all. We hope to be back soon, very soon! Stay tuned! In the last week of June at Nirvana, you will be able to enjoy the Mango Masti, a mango festival, with memorable dishes created to celebrate this creamy and sweet fruit. In this special menu, you will find salads such as Aam Ki Chaat (mango in spicy dressing flavoured with lime and coriander) and Aam Aur Lobster (lobster sautéed with mango on a bed of lettuce). In the dessert arena, creations such as Aam Ki Rasmalai (cottage cheese dumplings thickened with milk and mango) and Aam Aur Sabudan Kheer (mango and sago pudding) are the ones to look forward to.

(Dine-in services will resume on June 11, subject to Government approval).

The 2021

McLaren GT THE NEW MCLAREN HAS MADE A STATEMENT IN THE SUPERCAR SEGMENT WITH THE LATEST MOTOR VEHICLE MASTERPIECE. 86

www.ohlala-magazine.com

T

his month, the team at OHLALA was afforded the privilege of test driving the latest McLaren GT, compliments of the outstanding team at Kanoo Motors. Despite having put some of the most prestigious sports car brands through their paces over the years, this was the first time we were fortunate enough to get behind the wheel of a McLaren. Having read and heard so many positive reviews about all the previous models, we had huge expectations for their new GT, expectations that were soon exceeded. As soon as the McLaren GT came into view, we were taken with its elegant yet powerful presence. Constructed predominantly from aluminium, this model boasts a bespoke MonoCell II-T body structure which includes a carbon fibre rear upper structure that contributes to the vehicle’s superlight design. In fact, the new GT is more than 130kg lighter than its nearest core competitor and hundreds of kilogrammes lighter than some other cars in the segment. At the fabulous front end, the signature ‘hammerhead line’ runs horizontally across the nose, emphasising the sleek, jewel-like LED headlights. The front splitter reflects this refined line and serves to generate peak aerodynamic pressure at its centre-point, ensuring optimal airflow over the bonnet’s crisp contours. Despite being a supercar, this model has an underbody clearance of

110mm, ensuring it is capable of dealing with all urban situations. Sporting extra-long front and rear overhangs, the GT’s body measures 4.7 metres in length, with long, graceful lines flowing from bonnet to boot. Seven-spoke cast alloy wheels complete the vehicle’s sturdy stance, whilst gloss black roof, side sills, cantrails and rear bumper, along with the satin black exterior upper window all add touches of class to an already impressive design. At the backend, muscular rear fenders, an integrated fixed rear wing, a large diffuser and prominent exhaust tailpipes, ensure this car looks phenomenal from every angle. The supportive seats of the cabin have been optimised for long-distance comfort, with perfect padding as well as superior back and neck support. Once inside, we were surprised by the amount of space on offer within the vehicle. Despite the Grand Touring nature of this McLaren, the car has clearly been designed for comfort on long journeys, gifting the owner with the very best of both worlds. The stunning interior layout has been constructed from the very finest of materials, with every last design detail having been treated as a priority. Hidden-until-lit ambient lighting brings a soothing feel to the environment and compliments the Carbon Black Nappa leather seats. The instrument panel has been beautifully positioned with every control, button and switch being perfectly placed for easy access.

“As soon as the McLaren GT came into view, we were taken with its elegant yet powerful presence.”

DIVA Drives The new GT houses the most sophisticated infotainment system available to date from the marque. The McLaren Infotainment System II is amongst the fastest operating in any vehicle thanks to its 10-core processor. The seven-inch touchscreen’s tailor-made display has been inspired by the control systems of luxury private jets and offers crisp and clear graphics second to none. The 12.3-inch TFT screen is positioned directly in front of the driver, providing essential vehicle information at a glance. All-in-all we found the system to be very efficient, informative and user-friendly, helping us to always feel fully in charge of the vehicle. Another feature we feel must be mentioned is the surprising amount of storage space in this new GT. A 420-litre luggage area below the tailgate is large enough to accommodate shopping, a travel bag or even a full set of golf clubs. This area, combined with a further 150-litres of storage space at the front, ensures this McLaren can accommodate up to 570 litres, making this model very practical for everyday use. As we started up the new 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged McLaren M840TE V8 engine, we knew we were in for a treat. The seven-speed SSG transmission enables seamless acceleration and, along with the launch control feature of the new GT, allows this beast of a machine to surge from 0-100km/h in a mere 3.2 seconds and from 0-200km/h in just 9.0 seconds. Flaunting a top speed of 325km/h, there are few other sports cars that could challenge this raw power. As we made our way along the roads, we marvelled not only at the superior traction control, suspension configuration, braking ability and overall handling of the vehicle, but at the beautiful sound of the engine as it instantly responded to our every command. Additionally, the inclusion of a wide range of Driver Assistance Technologies as well as safety and security features, ensures you will be well looked after wherever you decide to roam. The new McLaren GT is amongst the very best vehicles we have ever had the privilege of experiencing and we strongly recommend that anyone looking for a beautifully designed, technologically superior, performance-orientated yet practical vehicle should contact Kanoo Motors.

MISS Ohlala

I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN ACCORDING TO THE DICTIONARY, A WOMAN IS AN ADULT FEMALE PERSON. IT DOESN’T SAY THAT THE PATH TO BECOMING THIS WOMAN IS MORE COMPLICATED THAN IT LOOKS. Can you imagine a world where you have a written guide on how to be a woman? A step-by-step on how to react or behave when dealing with life’s many challenges? The book The Art of Being a Woman by Alexandra Adomaitis discusses the topics modern women have to face. The author interviewed women of different ages and ethnicities to get a broad perspective on various issues relating to the female gender. Not exactly a guide, but an eye-opener to the task of being a woman in today’s world. One aspect that haunts the modern woman is how she feels pressured by society and herself to be the best mum, best wife and have a successful career. Not everyone will have that. And the ones that do, often end up compromising on something. And there is also the fact that you might not be someone’s wife or mum or even have a corporate career, and people will judge you for that as well. However, there are a few things that you can try to remind yourself of during the course of your life:

MAKSIM GONCHARENOK ON PEXELS

- Don’t ever forget how capable you are. Force and strength are inside you, find them and don’t let them go. - Doubt yourself, but make sure you have a strong support system that will make you re-focus and help you through. - Acknowledge your achievements. It doesn’t matter how small or big they are; you are the only one measuring them. - Be yourself. Even when it seems wrong. There is no one better at being you than you are.
