Captivating Immortality Marchesa Luisa Casati, the Italian aristocrat and one of the most legendary and artistically represented women in history, inspires the new CH Carolina Herrera handbag Collection.
The genuine Denver leather exterior characterised by its soft texture and flawless appearance is contrasted by the structured, linen-lined interior, which contributes to the modern, clean aesthetic of the Casati collection. The bags are marked by the names Marchesa, Luisa and Stampa hidden on the backside of each style making them each unique in design.
An icon and constant source of inspiration during the first few decades of the twentieth century, Casati’s extravagant lifestyle, bold fashion statements, and eccentric personality captivated some of the most influential artists and designers of the era including Léon Beask, Paul Poiret, Erté and Giovanni Boldini. Considered to be the world’s first female dandy among the European high society, Luisa Casati was the muse for both renowned portraits and innovative collections, satisfying her desire for immortalisation. In the same vein, Carolina Herrera takes inspiration from Marchesa with the new accessory collection. The colour tones inspired by the modernist movement are masterfully combined in this collection which, like this particular character, is destined to be an inimitable, one-of-a-kind legend.
Each feature a golden rectangular closure providing a common visual thread for the three different sizes, and gives a nod to Marchesa and her love for extravagant, suggestive jewellery.
“I want to be a living work of art.” ~ Marchesa Luisa Casati

Designers are now venturing far and wide into graphical inspirations, with patterns and different abstract designs using bold urban colours. Designers like Celine, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs are going all out, with powerful colours and accessories. For this look, I have chosen the patterned dress and jacket from Michael Michael Kors Spring collection, and paired it with bold blue heels and the white Selma bag from MMK. The plain bag and shoes allow the dress to be centre of attention, whilst the colours compliment the outfit. To complete the look, accessorise with a bold red iphone cover by Tory Burch and green mirror sunglasses by Michael Kors.

Floral, natural fabrics, khaki colours, animal prints and skins are on-trend this season. Brands such as CH Carolina Herrera use floral and earthy colours, whilst in keeping with the signature brand identity of elegance and femininity. Celine Spring 2014 has some subtle and neutral unique pieces that can complete any outfit. With this look, the plain neutral skirt gives the outfit balance being the “in-between” garment, which separates the wild and exotic leather, and the floral print. The Celine bag uplifts the outfit with its pop of colour.

Canvas of Dreams
Each of her works are episodic – a transcription, if you will, of a day in the life of the inspirational artist, Rula Khoury. WORDS BY Karina Lazarraga, IMAGES BY George Mathew

ordan native Rula Khoury’s brilliant figurative compositions of colour are spontaneous and structured, moody and bright all at the same time. Her figurative works are powerfully constructed pictures, great in their clarity. But, her strong point as an artist also lies in the elegance of her abstractions. Rula has a gift for creating compositions around beautiful, sensually drawn lines – skilfully delineating shapes on the canvas, while creating a substantial character within the entire work. What seems to naturally evolve out of her abstract swirls result in representational images that sometimes meld into her figurative technique. “I never plan my work,” shares Rula. “I let my emotions and my mood guide me. Like anything in life, I take decisions and never look back. If challenges come my way, it’s how I deal with them that makes me a much stronger and wiser person.” With her art, Rula has the same discipline and principle; following the same rule when deciding whether her work is complete or not: “When I feel good about my painting and like what I see in front of me, that’s when I decide that it’s done. “When I start painting I think about the energy that gets reflected in my work. I believe in energy and that good artwork reflects positive vibes that embrace optimism. This gives me a sense of motivation – it lifts my spirit and leads me to magical places of art fantasy,” she adds. During the artist’s teenage years, she worked mostly with watercolours, oil and charcoal; but then less than eight years ago, she began using acrylic: “When the brush strikes the canvas, my thoughts materialise into actions and this requires moments of peace and tranquility. Unfortunately, when you’re a mother, these moments are limited. With two active children, I don’t have time for details. I loosened up by leaving details on the side and loved that the paint had a life of its own! Every stroke is flawless and bold,” expresses Rula. www.ohlala-magazine.com

have previously covered, the real strength of Rula’s body of work are the myriad shifts and nuances that transform her creations from piece to piece. Whether they are charcoal drawings, sculptures made of clay or acrylic and oil paintings infused with collaged bits of paper or in some cases, copper; Rula is committed to refined balance and precise execution to produce works that one can truly delight in.
“The real strength of Rula’s body of work are the myriad shifts and nuances that transform her creations from piece to piece.”
‘Fearless’
Growing up in an ‘art-friendly home’, Rula’s parents brought her to museums and cultural shows, exposing her to classical music from a very young age. She does her best to do the same now for her two children – at times bringing out her canvas and encouraging them to draw or paint alongside her. Rula’s palette noticeably changes as she is moved by her experiences, current events and surroundings: blue tones and black are replaced by yellows and bright hues, but undoubtedly at work in each painting is a complex and sophisticated perception of colour and its quality. Beautiful examples are the paintings, ‘Harmony’ and ‘Fearless’ – the latter, a poignant account of one’s journey from being in the dark and moving towards delicately shifting space and light. While some may argue that this is nothing more than a repetitive theme that other artists

heikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa was appointed as the first Minister of Information and Culture in a GCC country in 2008. ndefatigable and dynamic, Shaikha Hind bint Salman Al Khalifa is an entrepreneur, visionary and inspirational leader. Holding various business roles as well as lead positions in several charitable societies, Sheikha Hind also heads the Bahrain Chapter of the Business and Professional Women Club which recently marked its first anniversary. The newly-formed Club, which is a branch of the International Club present in more than 95 countries, is comprised of twelve women entrepreneurs and professionals; and aims to provide support to Bahraini women in the fields of training, skills-building as well as help in creating arts and handicrafts, as one of their tools to provide economic support. Her Excellency Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, the Minister of Culture, who has patronised the project since its inception, has dedicated a training centre at Al-Jasra as headquarters for the Club’s activities – where they develop activities and events to serve several
segments including job seekers, the jobless, local talent and creative people with limited income. The Club, which is also supported by Bahrain Development Bank, also serves as an ‘incubation centre’ for skills development in Arabic calligraphy, photography, video shooting, farm planning, sewing and cloth tailoring. They also hold workshops on ceramics, pottery and waste recycling. There is also a central kitchen, which serves as culinary training centre. In celebration of International Women’s Day, Sheikha Hind praises the work that women around the world champion in their daily lives. She credits her mother, Sheikha Lulwa Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa (who herself gave tremendously in support of various charities in the kingdom), for being the woman that she is today. “She was a great example of an empowered woman and she inspired everyone around her. From her, I learned that to feel empowered, you have to have perseverance, dedication and belief in what you do, and to never give up.”

Who do you consider your female icons? RM. For me it’s about strong females who are confident in their own ability to succeed. They seize opportunity with their can-do attitude and never tread on anyone else’s toes. They would include people like Dale Murray, Yasmina Siadatan, Emma Jones in the UK. I also really love to meet Joanna Shields, who is leading Tech City in UK. Any helpful tips when starting a business? RM. Find a mentor, especially if you’re a start up. It’s so important to have some structure and guidance around you in the early days to ensure you stay on the right path - I truly believe it’s one of the most under-utilised support tools. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Iconic Women of All Time
Coco Chanel
Quite a trendsetter during her time and one of the most innovative fashion designers in history, Coco Chanel was instrumental in defining feminine style and dress during the twentieth century. Her ideas were revolutionary; often taking traditionally male clothes and redesigned them for the benefit of women.
Usually reserved for their male contemporaries, these women (just a few of the many) – great leaders, warriors, visionaries and humanitarians – have managed to reach their rarefied place in history to shape the world as we know it today.
Joan of Arc An unlikely heroine at the age of just
seventeen, she led an army, saved a people, died stoically and was sainted rightfully. Joan of Arc inspired a revolt against English occupation, successfully leading the French to victory at Orleans. Her subsequent trial and martyrdom only heightened her mystique.
Katharine Hepburn
With sixty-two years of the most intelligent acting ever to grace the big screen, Katharine was an iconic figure of twentieth Century film; winning four Oscars and over 12 Oscar nominations.
Queen Noor
Florence Nightingale She restructured nursing
Jordan’s Queen Noor has used her talents to positively impact the world throughout the course of her life. An international humanitarian activist, she is an outspoken voice on issues of world peace and justice. Her work includes conflict recovery and peacebuilding focusing on the Middle East, the Balkans, Central and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
and helped turn it into a respected profession. One of her most remarkable efforts was to overhaul the British military health care system. Nightingale used statistical analyses to identify unnecessary deaths due to contaminants during the Crimean War.
Marie Curie
Mother Teresa Margaret Perhaps the most famous woman of the twentieth century right up to her death in 1997, is this small, frail-looking nun, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia; Devoting her life to the service of the poor and dispossessed Mother Teresa became a global icon for selfless service to others. Through her Missionary of Charities organisation she personally cared for thousands of sick and dying people in Calcutta.

Mead
The tireless anthropologist believed a major purpose of her work was to share information about different cultures. Perhaps no other scientist has been as effective a communicator as she was, delving into numerous complicated, controversial issues facing the world: bioterrorism, genetically modified foods, infectious diseases, renewable energy, climate change and sustainability.
Testing the old adage that a woman’s place was in the home, Marie was a penniless student so she worked as a governess and tutor while pursuing her dream of becoming a physicist (unheard for a woman in the nineteenth century). She eventually became one of the first women to receive the Nobel Prize and the first person to win it for two separate categories.
Aung San Suu Kyi
During the unrest in Burma in 1988, the military violently suppressing dissent, Aung San travelled extensively throughout the country, speaking and demonstrating for democracy. Sentenced to house arrest in 1989 without a trial, she received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1991 whilst being incarcerated. When freed in November 2010, she had been imprisoned for 15 of the previous 21 years.
Amelia Earhart
Achieving a number of firsts as a female aviator, Amelia is an icon to women around the world. At 40, she had become the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, the first woman to fly nonstop across the US and the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross award.

Lisa Stansfield After a period away from the musical limelight, multi-million selling artist Lisa Stansfield is back with a new album just released and a European tour to follow. Ohlala!’s Ben Whittaker caught up with the Brit Award winner from Lancashire, England, to discover what has motivated her return.
ing one of the biggest hits of the decade with All Around The World and the album it came from (Affection) going on to sell over five million copies worldwide. The 90s were equally successful for the young artist from England, although unlike many of her contemporaries, her output was not that prolific and whilst the critics continued to praise her work, chart success proved more elusive. By the turn of the millennium with six albums under her belt, Lisa Stansfield took a break from music to focus on the other love of her life, acting. But as 2014 gets underway, the singer-songwriter returns with a new album, Seven, and a European tour that is set to bring her back into the limelight.
A
nyone who can remember the eighties will no doubt be nostalgic for a time that saw TV dominated by the likes of Hill Street Blues and Minder and musicians such as Michael Jackson, The Human League, The Police and Wham! All sharing space at the top of the music charts. And for those purists who bemoan the demise of music today one should not forget that this decade also threw up “classics” from Tight Fit, Joe Dolce, Jive Bunny and Renee and Renato! Still, one artist who certainly made her mark in that era and also for the next two decades to come was Lisa Stansfield, enjoy48

Celebrity Scoop
“I have never been a prolific writer – seven albums in 20 odd years is probably testament to that,” Lisa Stansfield declares as we begin our interview. “But the thing with me is that I won’t do anything I don’t want to and it has to be right to really grab my interest. “Seven has been a long time in the making. It’s been a work in progress and part of the reason for the delay was that I didn’t feel that there was a niche my style could fit into for a while. That has all changed and I sense the moment is right, now.” Whatever the reason, the recent resurgence of 80s artists making comebacks certainly had something to do with it and the sound of that decade is certainly in vogue again. “Technically I’m more a girl of the 90s, I actually released Affection at the tail end of 1989 but I was certainly a product of the 80s.” Stansfield was always interested in music and her career began in 1980 when as a 14 year old she won the singing competition, ‘Search for a Star’. Citing the likes of Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson as some of her biggest influences growing up, it wasn’t until her association with Ian Devaney and Andy Morris as the band Blue Zone in 1984 that things began to take off in a serious fashion. “I featured on a song called People Hold On and after this the three of us decided to focus on my solo career.” When Affection and subsequent single All Around The World came out in 1989 it provided her with global recognition and was the launch pad for huge musical success. “It was an amazing time for me but it didn’t come without a lot of hard work. That’s what a lot of people seem to forget when they go into this industry. It is above all else a business. Of course you go into because you are creative, you enjoy it and you have something to say, but at some 50

“You have to learn to be selective. If you say yes too many times to too many things people will stop asking.” point – whoever you are – the bottom line is going to come into play. That’s part of the trick of keeping yourself grounded.” So what were the themes behind her new album Seven? “Some of the themes will be familiar to a lot of people but this album reflects a very personal part of my life because it is about someone who falls in love, loses that love and then finds it again. It centres a lot on the general turmoils of a relationship from a woman’s perspective.” And as a woman, has she found the industry a tough environment to work in? “As I said, music is a business and gender doesn’t really come into it – at least it never really has for me. My experiences have always
been quite positive and I think that if anything, there are more women in positions of power in music now than at any stage before. “The ‘fan facing’ space is populated by some great female artists and behind the scenes that is just as evident. Of course image and appearance – with the rise of the Internet and YouTube – is more important than ever and I don’t think we should shy away from taking advantage of whatever we have to achieve recognition. As long as what you are doing isn’t hurting anyone I can’t see the problem. With music occupying such a big space in her life, what prompted Lisa to take a break from her career and turn to acting? “I’ve always loved to act and as a performer on stage you are always acting in some form. From around 2005 until last year I made several movies and did some TV and really enjoyed the experience. It is something I would like to do more of but only if the right part comes along. “I do get sent a lot of material but I’m only going to say yes to something that really grabs me. I have a motto and that is you always need to be prepared to say no. In fact if I could give anyone a single piece of advice to anyone looking to make it in this business it would be always say no before you say yes. Seven is out now and the first single “Can’t Dance” is available now on iTunes. www.lisa-stansfield.com www.ohlala-magazine.com

For a sassy smokey look, apply a darker, charcoal grey shadow towards the outer creases of the eyes. Make your eyes pop by applying a bold hit of silver shadow on the inner corners. 4. For that added glitzy look, apply an extra thick black eyeliner on your upper lashline. 5. Finish the look by swiping a few coats of mascara on the upper and lower lashes. 76

Audi A3 Sedan Compact luxury with knock out looks to boot
words by Josephine Marshall, Images by George Mathew
T
his month I had the pleasure of getting to road test Audi’s new A3 Sedan. The premium German brand has been producing its popular sporty A3 range since 1996. In fact I was a proud owner of one of the early models of the A3 hatchback, so I was very curious to see what the luxury brand’s first foray into producing a sedan in the A3 line would look like. The

answer is simply sensational. With smart styling, a seriously classy interior and excellent driving dynamics Audi has produced a compact sedan that still retains the sporty edge we have come to expect from the A3. The vehicle sits low to the ground, with the striking lines of the car accentuating a sense of width and strength to the exterior body. The roof is curved and there is a very sexy integrated boot lid spoiler, which accompanied by the two-piece taillights further highlights www.ohlala-magazine.com
the low, wide, sporty appearance. All of this is enhanced by the hallmark Audi front grille proudly displaying those four interlocking rings we have come to associate with luxurious and stylish automobiles. Sharp and stylish, the interiors ooze quality at every turn. From the gorgeous soft leather seats to an automatic sun roof, big easy to read dials and the dual zone auto climate control with rear-seat vents, this is a beautifully ergonomic and comfortable ride for both driver and passengers alike. One of my favourite features is the centre dashboard, which is telescopic and folds seamlessly into the wrap-around dash, hidden away when not in use. The 5.8 inch colour screen is generous in size and is very intuitive to use, enabling you to easily control all your navigational and audio functions. Talking about the audio capabilities, you will have no trouble cranking up your favourite tunes with the eight-speaker MMI audio system, SDHC card reader and USB input at your disposal. Wonderfully spacious, you can easily accommode up to five passengers within the Audi. Of course the main point of difference with this newest release A3 is the inclusion of the boot, which is very generous and practical in size, with a roomy 425-litres of boot space. If you are having a “With smart styling, a particularly heavy seriously classy interior and shopping session, the excellent driving dynamics back seats can fold Audi has produced a compact away increasing the storage space to a sedan that still retains the very handy 880-litres, sporty edge we have come to proving the boot is not expect from the A3. just for show but has

been designed with practicality in mind. So we have sporty looks, one very classily appointed interior, and practicality, the next big question is how does it drive? The answer is extremely well. The car has been engineered using very light materials for the body and underpinnings and the 1.8-litre engine, which starts at the push of a single button, is extremely responsive providing a very zippy ride. Audi have your safety concerns covered too with this car. The A3 comes with rear parking sensors, auto headlights and wipers, cruise control, seven airbags, electronic differential lock, anti-slip regulation, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and electronic stability control. Overall, I found my time with the new Audi A3 Sedan to be super fun! The car is full of lots of little luxurious touches, making you feel like you are driving something really special. It successfully manages to merge practicality and fashion. With its knock out good looks, compact body, power on the road and competitive price, it is an excellent entry level vehicle into the luxury car market and is sure to appeal to the smart, classy lady who is looking for both looks and performance.

HOROSCOPES
Happy Birthday
Aries
You are an independent personality – often best suited to working on your own and at your own speed (which is usually fast) – but with this trait also comes a great degree of responsibility. This month you might find the need to actually admit you require the help of others when it comes to an issue at work, much to the surprise of those close to you. You have found yourself under a great deal of stress recently and the truth is that certain pressures you felt you could deal with are proving too difficult to shoulder alone. To succeed you are going to have to change your methods.
Ms Pisces
Giovanni reveals your destiny … Scorpio
Taurus
You will find yourself in a celebratory mood this month and there are many things you have to be happy about – especially where a work project is concerned. It seems that the success you have been aiming for has been a long time coming but finally, it turns up just when you need it most. From hereon out, things are unlikely to ever be the same again. On the relationship front, there could be a healing process for you and a partner to work through and this may see the pair of you taking some time away to unfamiliar surroundings in an effort to resolve matters.
Gemini
You have been suffering through a period of stress in your life just recently that has stemmed from issues at work but has since impacted on your personal situation as well. This month you need to learn how to be selfish because for too long you have put the needs of others above your own. If your job has become too much to handle then consider a change of career because if you’re honest with yourself you need something to put that spark back into your world and it makes sense to start at the root cause.
Cancer
It’s fair to say that when it comes to confrontations many Cancerians are not good at asserting their opinions on others. This month you may upset a few people with your failure to make a stand in a fairly awkward family situation and it might be that you will come to regret this later on. Your reticence to speak your mind might have something to do with not wanting to rock the boat but it looks as if the time has finally come for you to review matters because taking a ‘back seat’ all the time is starting to wear a little thin.
Leo
It’s hard to resist the temptations put before you this month and whilst you know you are getting in over your head, it doesn’t seem to be enough to dissuade you. However, in the quieter moments you should consider

PISCES
Life often has an uncanny and independent way of unfolding, no matter how hard you might try to impose your own will upon it. Many of you may experience this first-hand in March when a recent business meeting that was planned with one agenda in mind actually unfolds into something completely different. You will feel as though you have discovered a new sense of energy and purpose and this will prove to be the catalyst for some very successful developments that take you down unexpected paths. Believe in yourself because you will need to be confident if you are to truly succeed. Don’t allow any elements of doubt to creep into your plans.
PISCES At A Glance
Those born under the sign of Pisces are often seen to be imaginative and sensitive, with a compassionate and kind outlook on life. Their positive outlook on life and all around good nature makes them selfless individuals – intuitive and sympathetic to those around them. They make excellent friends and are always willing to lend a hand and they also make intense and loyal partners. On the career front, Pisceans make excellent writers and their communication skills allow them to work well in social environments.
just who might be hurt by your actions – especially if your behaviour were to become public knowledge. On the work front, a job offer in another department could prove the lift you need to take you out of an otherwise stale environment but just make sure the terms and conditions are suited to your longterm requirements.
Virgo
Some time ago you were approached by an admirer with the invitation to go out on a date but at the time you decided against the idea. Since then, much has changed in both your life and the life of the other person concerned and a forthcoming encounter will see you reconsidering your earlier decision. Whether something is going to develop remains to be seen but there is definitely a sense of renewed romance in the air. On the health front, a previous back problem could resurface and you should make an effort to get proper treatment this time around.
Libra
You have been feeling a little under the weather and drained of your energy and it seems that whilst you might not be prepared to admit it, you’re not quite yourself from a health perspective and you need to visit the doctor to sort this issue out. You shouldn’t see this as anything serious but it is a problem which needs to be addressed and you might be surprised to discover that what ails you is connected to something from your past. On the money front, you will need to reassess your spending plans for the next few months to come.
You may be in for a bit of surprise this month where a work colleague is concerned and if you’re not careful, the fallout could leave you with a significant amount of egg on your face and suffering a drop in respect from those you have to spend time with on a daily basis. It’s no secret that Scorpios often have a high opinion of themselves but in this particular instance your ‘self admiration’ could come back to damage your credibility – especially if you abuse your position. Play fair or you will have little room for complaint when the tables are turned.
Sagittarius
These are difficult times for your sign and you may have been forced to shed many tears over family concerns in recent weeks. Unfortunately, matters are not set to come to a head until the start of April and although you might feel you are prepared for what could lie ahead, it’s going to prove a difficult path to travel. On a more optimistic note, the opportunity to rekindle a past love will present itself to you and whilst you may not be in a position to recreate what once was, a brief visit to a time in your youth could help boost your confidence for the future.
Capricorn
The next few weeks are set to be very troubling for you when it comes to relationships and there is every likelihood you may be considering a trial separation because things between you and a partner have become strained. It could be circumstances; it could be other factors that you haven’t even addressed but whatever the reason you need to clear your head and set yourself back on course otherwise you may find yourself drifting aimlessly. You need direction and perhaps some time in your own space is the only way you’re going to find it.
AQUARIUS
You will be feeling that you have not had everything your own way of late and this month might reinforce that as you find yourself fighting a losing battle for change in the work place. Your sign is a very giving one and not often prone to stubbornness but if you do feel strongly about your position then don’t back down too quickly. It might mean you have to fight your corner a little harder than you would have liked but if you can achieve what you want because of it, then it will prove beneficial in the long run. OHLALA! 113

World domination “What would the world look like if the roles were switched around, women at the top, all key positions in the world held and governed by women, what would the world look like, how would we be different?”
A
s women, can we compare ourselves to a man? The televised media, books, magazines social norms etc. portray a woman in a certain way, and there are countless books on comparisons between a man and a woman, but can we really be compared? Can we compare two totally different phenomenon with each other? Why the need for that comparison? Should we accept that comparison? I understand that we are raised into a paradigm either male or female and with it come certain behaviours but are those really our behaviours, or are they part of the created reality of what a woman is supposed to be. What is it to be a woman? Of course we can have children and are then a mother and we are caring, sensitive and nurturing and we can multitask, taking care of the kids, the man, remind him of his commitments, make house and basically be there all the time. We are the wife, the mother the daughter and the sex symbol. But is that a woman? That is a definition of a man. A car seemingly looks good if there is a beautiful woman in skimpy clothes parading around it. Perfume, makeup, etc sells better if there is a woman attached to it, or the symbol of femininity. But is that a woman? What made me think was, we have International Women’s Day. One day to think about our struggle for equality, inspiring change, and 114 OHLALA!

most importantly equality but are we not doing that every day in a man’s world, should we not be aware all year round; to strive to be free and express ourselves as we would like to. Proud and whole, a woman, a life giver, to explore, to be entrepreneurial without a man’s comments of the illusions of superiority. What would the world look like if the roles were switched around, women at the top, all key positions in the world held and governed by women, what would the world look like, how would we be different?
