’m not going to tell you that the runways were a revolution this season – sacrilege, I know. But let’s think about it, are they ever as evolutionary as we claim them to be? I and we as a magazine have been guilty of using the words: “The runways were awash with x,y,z new trends” when really it’s simply updated, recycled and rehashed ideas from the past that we repackage and market as something nouveau. Perhaps at this point you’re worried about my credibility as an editor but I can assure you I am going somewhere with this point. I love fashion as much as the next bunny (sorry, terrible… but you got it) and I thrill at the new lines coming in their droves to the shop floors. Fundamentally though, it’s just old style with new appeal – the never-before-worn element, excites us. You do of course get designers who blow us off the FROW with innovative, unusual and incredible costume pieces that instantly earn a place in a V&A style museum and this is what fashion is all about: pushing the boundaries and creating historic work. Even if what we see on the runways each spring has been seen before in another fashion life, the idea of spring brings a renewed sense of self beyond ready-to-wear. Fashion is the external to our internal happiness. It’s a wonderful thing that we have fashion to lift us and bring out the best of who we are. Let’s celebrate the newness of us and thank fashion for always being a constant to that.

Designer of today. A woman who is fluent in the language of art and design, who is not necessarily looking for trends, so much as special pieces to add to her wardrobe and hold onto. I would like to see the Nathalie Trad brand evolve into an all-encompassing lifestyle brand slowly but surely, expanding its reach throughout the years across various geographies. Who approached who for the Nathalie Trad x Rupert Sanderson shoe? What do you feel is Nathalie Trad’s and Rupert Sanderson’s best qualities that allow for a brilliant fusion of fashion? The collaboration with Rupert Sanderson came about during a chance meeting at Paris Fashion Week. We found that the inlaid materials I use on clutches would lend themselves beautifully to the heels of his shoes. And who better to collaborate with than the footwear master himself? Indeed, this collaboration was a great window into the world of footwear for me. I am always looking for ways to expand the realm of possibilities with the materials I use. This collaboration has given me the opportunity to explore new avenues and will hopefully lead to a new direction for Nathalie Trad as well as contribute to fulfilling our longterm goal of building a lifestyle brand offering accessories across multiple categories. What did the creative process involve? Who did what? It was important to allow each other creative freedom, so I worked on different inlay techniques for the heels that Rupert provided and he focused on creating the upper for the shoes. Was the end result what you imagined? The end result is even better than I could have ever possibly imagined! The perfect marriage of design, craftsmanship and comfort. We love how Nathalie Trad’s trademark is found on the block heel. Why the heel? We chose the heels as they allowed us to work with a big enough canvas to allow the inlay details to shine. The heel we picked for this collaboration is sculptural, geometric and modern, hence, represents both our aesthetic perfectly. Has this collaboration inspired you to create your own shoe line? Never say never!

Give me your nail polish for a second, I said, I want to try something. I ended up painting the sole with this red nail polish and it looked much better

i

am meeting Christian Louboutin for a golden half hour – a small wedge of time granted between shoe signings, meal times, a charity gala, sleep, TV interviews and a return flight to Paris. Not your regular run-of-the-mill business trip, but a whirlwind 36 hours typical to the life of a fabulous designer who handles these packed pockets of time with expert ease. God forgive me, but I am wearing black trainers to meet him. What a let-down I think, especially when I catch a glimpse of a studded pair of Oxfords tucked underneath a coffee table, so shiny I can see my reflection in them – presumably worn at his charity gala the night before. Luckily, he’s wearing a pair of (a surprising choice, even to him) Middle Eastern leather sandals (“I never wear sandals, I don’t like them but I just decided to wear them today”) and an unintimidating blue hoodie and jeans ensemble. We settle on a plush beige sofa out on his private terrace at a five-star resort hotel, overlooking the cerulean Arabian Gulf. We sit face to face (he puts on a pair of royal blue sunglasses, but I can feel his warm eyes looking right at me without any self-consciousness despite being a self-proclaimed shy person) while his entourage get on with low-level but busied activity around us without interrupting. He has a small voice but his wit is confidently dry – he notes the absurdity of the cool weather in the region as he gathers his arms and rubs his palms together but his c’est la vie attitude is reassuringly intact. He takes interest in who I am and how I got to where I am. It’s very sobering to see that a man with so much genius, an emperor of high heels the world over, is also very genuine. His shoes have been worn by the most well-heeled members of the global elite and us everywomen, who feel our most fantastic selves when hoicked up in a pair of his stilettos and give a seductive flash of those signature red soles as we take our strong and sexy strides in them. He is remarkably unfazed by the flurry of excitement his work creates

Designer

Focus

and is unperturbed by industry events like fashion week too for that matter. It’s not that he doesn’t care, it’s just that his priorities lie in the nuts and bolts of the shoemaking process. He’s so intent on treating shoes as stand-alone pieces, he never designs them to match clothes. “While I am drawing, I always draw the woman naked. The only time I would think of clothes is if I am collaborating with another designer, otherwise it’s just about the shoe” he explains. Christian has designed a staggering 20,000 shoes. It seems incredible to think that there can be 20,000 differences in a pair of shoes but Christian has a simple philosophy behind his genius. “If you have a vivid mind, enthusiasm and a love for what you’re doing, it can be done. If you love to speak, you can speak for 100 years, if you love to dance you can dance for 100 years,” he says. One constant in all 20,000 designs though, is the iconic red sole. The story behind this trademark feature is just as cosmic as you might think. “Years ago, when the first prototype of a colourful Andy Warhol-inspired Mary-Jane shoe I designed arrived while I was in Italy, I thought it looked very good – but, the drawing looked better and I didn’t understand why? The drawing had more pop. At one point, I turned the shoe so the heel was facing me and the sole was black and suddenly the entire shoe became black despite having many colour. It was a huge percentage of black that didn’t exist in my drawings. The model who was trying on the shoe was actually painting her nails in a strong red colour in that moment and I said to her: ‘Give me your nail polish for a second, I want to try something.’ I ended up painting the sole with this red nail polish and it looked much better,” he recounts. And

that’s how the iconic red sole came to be. Contrary to what you’d expect, the requests he gets from celebrities are remarkably uncomplicated. Madonna, Lady Gaga and J.Lo have extravagant personas to uphold but typically, it’s not about the shoe for the specific occasion. “If it’s for an award show for example, it will never be a slide heel, because it might fall off as they go on and off stage so it’s more about being practical. They want to look good but they don’t want to have to think about what they are wearing because the agenda of their night is about their cause, not the shoe,” he explains. The Middle Eastern aesthetic never shies from attention. Christian has been coming back and forth to the Middle East for years and loves the “extreme and impressive makeup and hair” that women sport. He’s designed many one-off, exclusive pairs of shoes for the market in the past and sets “earthy colours with gold” as the perfect palette for Middle Eastern women – “gold goes very well with the sun”. Naturally, Christian is a shoe fiend. “I like every kind of shoe. My shoe closet is very organised too. There are two sections for sneakers, the black shoes are together, spikes are together, embroidered shoes are together and espadrilles are together,” he says. But when asked about his clothes collection, he struggles to list his favourite pieces – he doesn’t invest much in collecting any one piece except “ties and bowties. I have hundreds of them but I barely wear them, but I still keep collecting!” Instead, his collecting habits lie in native American art like masks and dolls or sculptures. “I love small, detail-oriented pieces like Persian Miniatures. I don’t collect art, I like three dimensional things. Oh [a little laugh] I collect houses too, I have to be careful with that, it’s a very bad addiction!” www.ohlala-magazine.com

Kim Kardashian

Visits Dubai Professional makeup artist, Sarah Ulhaq, gives us the scoop on Kim Kardashian and Mario Dedivanovic’s grand beauty conference that was held in Dubai. The beauty guru was present at the Master Class for all things makeup where she was answered her most burning beauty questions.

M

ario, do you have any advice for anyone who wishes to become a top make-up artist? Assists other make-up artists; pay your dues, clean brushes, hang around anything that you think you can learn from. Back stages are gold mines of information. How easy is it for a make-up artist to make it as a household name? The industry has changed, before you had to be willing to sacrifice more time in order to achieve anything. Now it’s become a thing that many come and go before you even realise. So, in order to get noticed, you have to be creative, be consistent, and be patient. Kim, how did you and other celebrities choose makeup artists? We use contacts from people we’ve work with in the past and personal references, but sometimes we just look on the internet and see who is doing something that we like. It’s not always a numbers game of who has the biggest fan base; sometimes it’s who is the most unique and whose style works with what we’re looking for. Kim, why have you stuck with Mario for so long as your MUA? We started pretty much together in the industry, and he’s not just my MUA but also more like family. He understands and respect personal

boundaries; when it comes to his craft I trust his judgment because quite frankly he knows what he’s doing. Kim, in your opinion how has the makeup industry changed since Mario first started? There is this whole new wave of artists that can learn so easily from makeup classes such as these, from social media, instagram and much more. Beauty Column A new season is so exciting and a great opportunity to give your beauty look and regime a revamp. This season, make-up and beauty has taken a new turn and is now less about strong trends and more about what suits you. The look is also much more natural which we think is perfect for spring/summer especially here in The Gulf where summer is so hot and it’s a bit much to be layered in products. But before you think natural is boring don’t fret. Colour took centre stage on the eyes and the lips, with glossy pouts, glittery and electric hues on the eyes all spotted backstage. Nails and skin were pared-down but chic, with the natural and radiant feels. But the best advice for SS17 beauty is showing your own personality and playing up your good points. You might want to avoid buying that new matte lipstick or contour kit.

Over-Stencilled Brows Say ta-ta to eyebrow stencils and harsh pencils. It’s all about natural and slightly untamed brows this season. All you need is some clear brow gel and an eyebrow brush, adding a little brow pencil into any gaps and you’re ready to go. You should always be able to see the hairs of your eyebrow, especially on the ends. This look is so much easier and natural!

Harsh Contouring I love a good bronzer as much as the next girl but it’s all become a bit too much. The chiseled, contoured look that is super popular got a lot of attention thanks to the Kardashians but this season is better replaced with softer, strobe-like accents. Go for soft bronzers, light strokes and a small dab of highlighter and blush.

Out With The Old Angela Beitz advises you to wipe your slate clean for the new season and tells you which trends to say goodbye to this year

58

www.ohlala-magazine.com

While we won’t see braids falling off of the beauty surface completely, SS17 runway shows indicate that they will likely take a back seat to edgier, slicked-back ponytails, half-up, halfdown styles and knots in the upcoming season. Think crisp, cool power-looks that are super polished. Meanwhile, the soft waves that were popular for 2016 are being replaced with uneven, and slightly messy curls. Pump up the volume with a texturising paste or sea salt spray, working upward and outward.

Too Much Matte We’re not swearing off matte lipstick altogether. That said, the new trend is definitely high-shine. Scoop up a clear gloss and wear it by itself for a more natural look, or coat it over your favorite matte or cream shades for added dimension. Just like matte lipsticks, matte eye shadows are taking abackseat this season. Opt for a wash of metallic over the eyelid or get creative with one a neon shade.

Bare Face Ready With heavy make-up looks now gone it’s a great time to invest in your skin. Bare faced beauty that glows from within is easy you just need the right skincare. Your routine should include an exfoliator, hydration and moisture, and ingredients like Glycolic acid, Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Gluthatione, Collagen and Vitamin C for all-round care, leaving you with skin ready to bare. Ramp up your regime with serums and sheet masks for glowing, healthy skin.

Call Of The Wild There are desert escapes and then there’s Salalah in Oman. An exotic blend of lush foliage and arid beauty. We stayed at Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara and experienced a world away from the wider Gulf – bliss

61

Travel Escapes It started off in true style. Business class, a lounge and

ultimate comfort. We went off to Salalah via Dubai with Fly Dubai where we were pampered with sumptuous business class seating, wonderful food (we had prawn machboos, from a selection of four international dishes) and a Wifi connection that could easily rival the speed down at sea level! All in all, the start of our trip was smooth, easy and comfortable – the perfect way to prepare for a luxurious trip ahead. As we touched down in Salalah, we were super impressed by the airport, it was modern and much bigger than we expected, they are clearly planning for the future, which is great to see. The moment we stepped off the plane, the Omani hospitality was on overdrive and made us feel so welcome. We’ve often been told that in the entire GCC, the Omanis are famously warm and hospitable and we can definitely attest to that – if not more.

“The beach was uninterrupted for as far as the eye could see” As far as drives goes, the journey from the airport to the resort was seamless and beautiful. Salalah has so much greenery on offer, far more than we expected but also, a unique blend of lush foliage with arid beauty – something we are not always privileged with on our shores. There’s a real natural vibe about it too, as if we were on a tropical island. The resort, is a sight to behold. Situated in the heart of the perfume capital of Arabia, Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara is a playground of culture, history and adventure for inquisitive travellers, whilst empty white-sand beaches, shady palm trees and sun-kissed waters cater for those who wish to unwind. From historic forts and citadels, endless dunes and untouched beaches to soaring mountains, vibrant bazaars and lush coconut and banana plantations, this spellbinding Omani enclave oozes colourful stories intertwined with history and legend. We were welcomed by our own dedicated butler who handled the 62

check in process in the villa. During the check in process itself we had a relaxing welcome foot soak which we were told is a Thai traditional welcome – not your everyday welcome, that’s for sure, but it was a special touch nonetheless. The resort’s interiors boast traditional elements incorporating a communal seating area originally used to greet guests with Arabic coffee or tea, dressed in bright kilim fabrics and soft cushions. Recessed walls, once used to store supplies, are adorned with local antiques and artwork, with lanterns scattered throughout to create a peaceful ambiance. The use of symmetry is also an important feature throughout the grounds with raised black-stone water features mimicking the ancient falaj irrigation system running towards important focal points, the ocean and the lagoon. The stunning entrance arches embrace the beauty of Islamic

architecture to complement the natural landscape and the palm trees, imitating the curve of their graceful branches. The arch was designed for structural and functional purposes and is a key feature of this type of architecture, but it is now predominately used for decorative purposes. The arch features throughout the hotel, with the most spectacular examples found in the lobby and the spa, helping to create an authentic atmosphere. That night, we indulged in a seafood buffet dinner at Sakalan – a mix of local and Asian flavours, adhering to the overall of the hotel. Sakalan, which translates to ‘The Land of Frankincense’ is an all-day dining restaurant, with open kitchens and deli counters serving an array of cuisines from near and far. Breakfast greets guests with lavish choice – freshly baked bread, croissants and homemade jams alongside pita, creamy hummus and shakshuka. For lunch and dinner, guests can enjoy dishes from around the world, fresh sushi and authentic Arabic to fiery Indian and contemporary Western, all set by the infinity pool. The next morning, we took to a 10km run along the unending beach. We really appreciated the natural beauty of the coast where we saw so much wildlife. The beach was uninterrupted for as far as the eye could see. The hotel has no competing hotels either side, so it has a monopoly on the stretch that goes for miles and it makes it feel that much more exclusive. Later that day, we took to a tour of the Land of Frankincense Museum and Al Baleed Archaeological Park with Salalah Guru. Located within a short distance from the resort, the 60 hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site features ruins of an ancient city which dates back to 2500 BC and was the centre of frankincense trade. Just inside the park is the Land of Frankincense Museum with a comprehensive view of the history and cultural heritage of Oman as well as maritime legacy across the centuries. It added a lot of flavour to our experience overall and was filled with interesting stories. We closed the day with 30 minutes of yoga on the beach which calmed our mind and soul, against a gorgeous polychrome sunset. This was followed by Dining By Design on the beach. Surrounded by flickering candles, couples can enjoy a choice of connoisseur menus served by a personal chef and villa host in a secluded beach or garden setting for the ultimate dining à deux experience. A day by the pool is always our fast track to unwinding, and of course, when an infinity pool is involved, life becomes that much more sweet. What’s more, is this relaxing morning was followed by a trip to the spa – one that lasted many hours. Anantara Spa takes guests on a holistic journey to restore strength, beauty and balance to the body, mind and soul. Featuring five suites alongside separate male and female wet areas, relaxation areas, Thai massage suite and nail spa, and guests can experience a range of treatments in total privacy with the highly skilled therapists. Harnessing precious ingredients such as frankincense as well as bananas, coconuts and pomegranates from nearby plantations, each treatment has been designed to renew from tip to toe, whether it’s a stimulating body polish, therapeutic massage, replenishing wrap, radiant facial or ancient Ayurvedic treatment. In all, the Anantara experience in Salalah is nothing short of fantastic – from the breath-taking villas to the all-encompassing nature, this trip was faultless and we cannot recommend it enough. City Slicker Think Manama is old news? Think twice. Downtown Rotana is perfectly placed near the souk and is full of character. We checked in for a luxury weekend stay and fell in love with the capital all over again

www.ohlala-magazine.com

67

Downtown Rotana stands out tall in Manama. The

modest skyline is punctuated by the property’s unique architecture and design. It’s got an unassuming position within the business district but there’s easy access nonetheless. Coming up into the hotel driveway, the concierge swiftly took the keys off us and took care of the car. We were then ushered to reception for an even swifter check-in. Everyone in the hotel knew our name (very impressive considering the amount of staff throughout the hotel) and made us feel personally welcomed. We whizzed up to the 18th floor of the hotel to our top-quality Premiere Twin Room where a fruit platter and a pyramid of Arabic desserts awaited us on the table – it’s the small touches that count! The room is full kitted out with all the TV gizmos and gadgets you’d need – the room has a warm aura about it – above one of the twin beds is a boldly stencilled flower while the wall next to the desk area is painted a dark teal colour next to the overall beige palette. The height of the room gave us a reassuring amount of sound-proof quiet, away from the hustle of the souk down below. Although we did enjoy the sensory experience of the souk from way above – the night-time light twinkles made for a very romantic setting too. The bathroom was modern with a standing rain shower, L’Occitane en Provence bath products and a full set of vanity accoutrements. Overall the room is full of form and function: stylish and well thought-out to make your stay as comfortable and as fuss-free as possible. We normally don’t take corridors into account or even offer any comments because let’s be honest, a corridor is a corridor but at Downtown Rotana, the corridor from the elevator to the room was incredibly wide and spacious – so much so, we made a point to mention it each time we walked down it. There was something so luxurious and plush about it– either side of the corridor are floor to ceiling windows that offer double aspect views of Bahrain’s Financial

“It’s contemporary in style with simple clean lines in the furniture but there’s still oodles of character” Harbour and sprawling Manama. After settling our belongings in the room and freshening up, we went to Flavours on 2 for one of the most revered brunches in Bahrain. We have to admit, we already knew what this brunch was all about and how much it’s been a talking point around the island for a while now but you can never get enough of a great thing, can you? So, in true brunch style, we took our time to enjoy the plethora of fabulous food. The venue is super attractive and fun with a dynamic colour scheme of green and many other swatches – the floor to ceiling picture windows of the street show you Manama in full splendour. The brunch is as comprehensive as it gets; just when you think they’ve ticked all the boxes ( Japanese, Indian, Korean, International, French, British) they throw in an element of surprise to really draw you in (hello quiche and suckling pig!) We went for a hearty and highly varied plate of lamb chops, paneer, potato gratin, sushi and stir-fried vegetables. Desserts come in full force, on their own ‘island’ style

table. The Umm Ali is ummazing quite frankly, it’s very bready and creamy and is the perfect tummy pleaser on a winter’s day. After catching a few winks on our sumptuous bed, we went down to the 9th floor to Bodylines for a much-needed (especially after the spectacular amount of food at brunch) aromatherapy massage. Bodylines has a peaceful atmosphere, aided by the unobtrusive lighting and warm staff. Our therapist took a tough and soft approach to our massage by starting off with Thai style strokes, to help get rid of our knots and then she slowly kneaded her way through our body to relax us. One full hour of this pampering experience prepared us nicely for a trip down to the City Lobby Lounge for some afternoon drinks. The City Lobby Lounge is an absolute delight as far as lobby lounges go. The space is calm, elegant and comfortable. It’s contemporary in style with simple clean lines in the furniture but there’s still oodles of character. We sipped on a coconut hot chocolate and an immunity booster green juice packed with fantastic energy-giving ingredients. Although we couldn’t possibly get through the entire menu, it is necessary to note that it is incredibly extensive and varied to suit any craving and we are sure it’ll serve as a great spot for a meeting or friendly catch up. The next day after an uninterrupted sleep, we went back to Flavours on 2 for both breakfast and lunch. Although the emphasis with Flavours on 2 is on Friday brunch, this all-day dining venue has it all, and with each day the live stations have slightly different options, so it’s never predictable and thus more exciting. We highly recommend this slick city property as it ticks all the boxes from location to F&B to wellbeing to comfort, it’s a hidden gem in Bahrain.

Tune In:

Hello Fashion TV The first fashion and lifestyle TV channel in the world has landed on our shores and we are so pumped for what is to come. We speak with FTV International’s Vice President for The Middle East, Romain Saint Gilles about what we can expect from this momentous move.

How exciting that you’ve come to Bahrain! What do you think of the fashion and party scene on the island? I’ve always felt Bahrain has a very interesting base for fashion brands and designers like Noon by Noor or Sofia Al Asfoor. But there’s been a missing national platform to spotlight and support these talents - this will be one of my missions here. I also believe Sophia Jawad is doing interesting work to pick up European young fashion designers in her multibrands store in Bahrain. I really like Bahrain’s lifestyle as a bridge between tradition and modernity - you can find great A list F&B locations too such as Bushido, Asia de Cuba and The Ritz Carlton. It’s an incredible mix of different cultures. Bahrain is an indispensable centre point, for culture, business and leisure. What is the core essence of Fashion TV as a channel? FashionTV is a global 24/7 TV station focused on fashion, beauty and styles, the biggest fashion and lifestyle cable network in the world. Since day one, FTV features the most updated fashion and lifestyle trends from around the world, including exclusive reports on famous houses such as Dior, Cavalli, Armani, D&G. FTV covers all fashion weeks around the world focusing on Paris, Milan, London, New York, Tokyo and Sao Paolo. Our FTV viewers meet 70

celebrities and popular models face-to-face, on and off the stage. From the Oscars to the Red Carpet at the Cannes Film festival - watch out for the upcoming FTV event at Bushido - March 30! What do you hope to cover on the scene in Bahrain? Our major mission is to dedicate our TV channel to promising fashion designers. Our objective is to set up a cross media/event platform to emphasise Bahraini designers through a global audience. FTV reaches 1 billion viewers on six continents. We will not only cover but we will initialise productions of local Fashion/art /models by scouting events with major local partners. Do you have any favourite hotspots in Bahrain already? As I was born in the South of France, close to the sea, I’m always very drawn to sea views and outlets! You will find me around the beach at The Ritz Carlton or at Bushido, Trader Vic’s, Moda Mall, The Domain, there’s such a variety in Bahrain, it’s amazing. I was also at the Asia de Cuba opening last month which was fantastic! Be sure to head to Bushido Restaurant & Lounge on March 30 for the first FTV event in Bahrain

Italians Do It Better Oliveto’s Bahrain are offering up dining with a difference. We indulged in a beautiful spread of Italian fare while we sat in and amongst thoughtful artworks On the front of the menu at Oliveto’s Bahrain, there’s a telling prologue, if you like. It states that on April 4 2004, when the first Formula One Bahrain was inaugurated, Oliveto’s Bahrain, also opened. Speaking to the longevity of its popularity and success, this fine dining Italian restaurant is a firm favourite and has gone from strength to strength over the years and proves that a restaurant is like fine wine – it gets better with age. Upon entering Oliveto’s Bahrain, the expansive entrance and dining area has a sleek and uber modern feel to it. With a library of contemporary literature, art books and social commentary, this space is intelligent and well thought out. The grey and black palette is lifted by the colourful artworks by local artists (which change every couple of weeks) placed around the dining tables – some tables have traditional seating while others have sofas around them and it makes it feel like a restaurant cum living room. The menu is traditionally Italian - but without the casualness that is usually associated with the cuisine. This is fine dining Italian at its best. To start with, we took to a Burrata Alla Genovese – the artistic presentation saw a handsome slab of Burrata cheese spilling over a small bed of bruschetta and a perfect line up of cherry tomatoes with a delicate dome of tomato confit and basil pesto. The Burrata was lovingly soft and slippery, packed with punch and offered a creamy freshness. No matter how many Italian restaurants we have been to, the experience isn’t complete without sampling the Burrata. We also had the Vongole Alla Marinara, sautéed clams which were served in a deep clay-pot looking dish with a very generous portion of clams 78

www.ohlala-magazine.com

swimming in sauce. Moving onto mains, we kept to seafood. The first dish was the Capesante ‘Coquille St. Jacques’ which saw a string of pan-fried sea scallops sautéed and wrapped in beef bacon strips on a black chalk board. All we can say is, these scallops are a direct route to happiness. The texture and taste of the scallops can make you melt. There’s nothing missing in this dish as the scallops are stacked up with a base of potato, olive oil drenched bruschetta and topped off with a cherry tomato. All your food groups are covered and it’s fantastic. Then we went in for the star of the lunch. The Cernia Al Sale, is local baby hammour covered in rock salt and is oven baked. It’s brought out on a trolley – it’s that huge, a full fish – and is a beauty to look at. Our waiter cracked the salt shell to reveal the moist hammour and started to creatively garnish our plate with vegetables and placed the hammour around it. It was wildly flavourful with strong and exciting prickly touches of salt throughout. The highly anticipated dolce involved a classic and luxuriously rich Tiramisu, circled in a coffee powdered Oliveto’s ‘O’ and then a stylishly put together Pannacotta All ‘Ameretto consisting of almond flavoured pannacotta with salty chocolate crumble and a dollop of ice cream. This was pleasantly light and tasted exactly right. The experience is beyond your typical Italian joint, it’s far more sophisticated and elegant on all fronts – through the décor, the menu options and the slick service – here’s to it being an institution of Italian fare. Spa Days There’s no better way to unwind than having a full day at a spa. Luckily for us, there are plenty of luxury spa spots in Bahrain. We indulged in a pampering session of massages and other equally thrilling treatments last month courtesy of ART Rotana’s Bodylines Spa

Y

ou’re never at a loss of spa treatments on our island. From Saar to Sanad to Amwaj, you can drop in to any salon or spa (because you’ll find one every 50 meters) and the likelihood of getting a treatment right there and then is high. So, let’s be honest here lovely readers, we are super spoilt because the access and availability allows us to be. But beyond your run-of-the-mill spa treatments in Bahrain, you do get the exceptional variety too, ones where you should block out your entire day because doing anything but relaxing is non-negotiable. How can you possibly do any form of menial work when you’re in a total state of zen? One such example of heavenly spa experiences exists at ART Rotana on Amwaj islands. This resort hotel with its sea-facing view rooms is an elegant and romantic getaway from the city. The service stays on the right side of attentive and sincere, the food and beverage outlets range from Italian to Steakhouse which come highly rated (by us of course) and recommended for their top-quality ingredients and masterful chefs from all over the world. Being a resort, the emphasis on wellness is strong here. This resort begs to be enjoyed lying prone on a sun lounger beside the pool or the palmfringed, white sand beach. So, we took to their spa on a weekday (lucky us, you say) to discover the true meaning of relaxation. Let us walk you through the kind of treatments you can indulge in… We love facials. Who doesn’t? Yes, you might feel a bit red raw after it 82

but the long-term benefits make it worthwhile. The spa’s unique facials cater to all skin types and offer that all important ‘me-time’. And for all of us constantly trying to fight gravity and the ageing process (you’re still beautiful don’t worry) we recommend the Visible Brilliance Facial. This anti-aging face and eye treatment instantly firms, rejuvenate and plumps up the skin whilst reducing dark circles from around the eye contour. This superior treatment is further enhanced by a luxurious hand and arm massage, and destress scalp treatment for the ultimate in the scientific skin-therapy. After a treatment like this, you’ll be beaming off the walls with glow and shine. Equally too, we recommend, as per our experience, the Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience. The treatment name alone should sink your soul into deep relaxation. This customised aromatherapy experience uses carefully applied pressures and techniques to encourage a healthy well-being for the body and mind. There are several signature oils to choose from, formulated with natural plant and flower oils with wonderful exotic scents and powerful therapeutic benefits. This treatment works from your head to your toes, it will dissolve away all of your stress and tension held in every part of your body leaving you feeling recharged. We definitely felt all of the above and were taken such good care of from the time we arrived to our sad but inevitable departure. ART Rotana’s spa is the resort’s finest and main draw for its serene atmosphere and rejuvenation qualities – we loved every second of it. The Visible Brilliance Facial is 75 minutes long and is BD59. The Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience is 60 minutes long for BD35 or 90 minutes for BD45. For more information or to book a treatment call: 1600 0111

The New Generation Porsche Panamera Turbo

A

lthough we like to consider ourselves somewhat seasoned professionals when it comes to test driving luxury vehicles, we admit to initially feeling slightly intimidated when handed the keys to the secondgeneration Porsche Panamera Turbo. This car has such a presence to it, the excitement hits long before sliding into the driver’s seat. The new and improved design creates a stylistic link to Porsche’s iconic 911. With its pronounced shoulders, aesthetic flanks, beautifully sloping roof line, LED headlights and larger wheels, the ultimate sporty look has been achieved. This is no small task when considering we are talking about a four door saloon. Longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, the front-end design of the Panamera has been overhauled and is now complete with a crossbar in the radiator grille emphasising the car’s width. An arrow-shaped bonnet adds to the commanding presence, hinting at the power lying beneath. LED rear lights which include four-point brake lights are interconnected by a narrow LED strip which results in a unique night Porsche has design. Upon entering the car, it took a few upgraded and moments to absorb the spacious and futuristic merged elements layout of the cabin. Everything about this car screams class. From the luxury upholstery of superior to the neat and convenient layout of the dashboard console, our eyes could not take technology, in all of the impressive details fast enough. comfort and This super saloon car feels years ahead of the previous generation and everything performance to is new. The geniuses at Porsche behind create a truly the design have updated all safety and convenience features, which revolve around wonderful the clear and intuitive user interface. Having driving gotten rid of many of the buttons previously found up front, the new touchscreen interface experience. is like that of a smartphone or tablet, which contains practical features for controlling the vehicle, front and back. The standard 12.3” digital display has razor sharp quality and one immediately feels more in control of the experience. One is even able to control the car’s air vents and spoiler through the console. Ambient lighting as well as a 3D high-end sound system from Burmester, add to the already ample list of extravagant features. The general layout of the interior is capacious with individual seats for four people. The rear doors have been extended making climbing in and out far easier. The soft 84

close door feature is a novel one. The back seats come with multiple electronic adjustment options and all seats have multiple massage selections, a great way to ease stress throughout the busy day. So how does this piece of automobile art handle on the roads? In one word, immaculately! With four modes to choose from, namely Normal, Manual, Sport and Sport Plus, any and all terrain becomes a joy to navigate. Even at high speeds, we felt in complete control. The car feels glued to the road, even on tricky bends. The throttle is delicate and the gearbox very responsive, whilst the steering is precise and sharp. Able to go from 0 – 100kph in only 3.6 seconds and boasting a top speed of 306kph, we couldn’t help but smile as the power of the acceleration forced our bodies back into the seats. The acceleration is matched in quality by its extremely effective breaking system, which adds to the vehicle’s feeling of complete safety. With the new twin-turbo engine providing 550hp output, combined with the brand’s first eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission, not only is far more power available, but a significant reduction in both fuel consumption and emissions. The Panamera Turbo utilises its Porsche Traction Management (PTM), which is a permanent, fully variable all-wheel drive system. When tuned to the specific driving situation, PTM sensors continually monitor wheel speeds and provides perfect performance on dry roads as well as in wet conditions. One can feel completely at ease when transporting loved ones. Long stretches of road seemed to roll by in mere moments and when stuck in congestion upon our return, we remarked how we had never been so comfortable in a traffic jam. The makers of this luxury sedan have achieved something quite special with this automobile offering. They have combined the expected magical presence of a Porsche with extreme comfort, superior technology and ultimate driving control. With so many features still to discover and experience, handing back the keys was no easy task. For more information or to book a test drive call Porsche Centre Bahrain: 1745 9911

Miss Ohlala

Back To The

Beach

Miss Ohlala provides the perfect tips on how to keep your cool with your beach chic wardrobe this summer What could be easier than throwing on a bikini, grabbing a towel and heading to the beach? In fact a lot of women have a real fear of bikini season. It can be hard to feel confident and glamorous when you’re lying on the beach on a baking hot day, in a swimsuit with no makeup on, and with flyaway hair plastered in sunscreen. So here are some of my tips for a practical beach chic wardrobe that will boost your confidence: • Do pick a bikini or one-piece which suits your shape and complexion. If you have a wardrobe of muted colours, swimwear provides a golden opportunity to try out bolder hues and braver patterns. If you have pale skin, avoid white and opt for flattering hues such as coral pinks or cobalt blues. Nautical stripes are always in fashion when it comes to swimwear. • Before you change into your swimwear, cover yourself with a high factor sunscreen and let it sink in. Then ensure you top up at appropriate intervals throughout the day. This helps avoid unsightly burn lines where you have not applied sunscreen right up to the edge of your swimwear. Sunburn is not cool so be careful! • Do follow my grandmother’s advice and procure the largest sunglasses you can, with adequate UV protection, to fight wrinkles. And don’t forget to wear a large-brimmed beach hat to protect your face. Eugenia Kim’s sunhats with witty slogans are delectable. • Flip flops are the only practical footwear for the beach. Although I must admit I do like the current trend for pompom sandals. • Keep accessories to a minimum to avoid looking like an extra from 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Dynasty. Leave the rocks at home and stick to bohemian chic bracelets or layer long, delicate, chain necklaces. • Don’t bother washing your hair before heading to the beach. Tousle and texturise your hair with dry shampoo and texturising spray for all day beach waves. And use a UV protection hair spray if your hair is inclined to get damaged. • Carry a big straw tote or basket with your belongings in. Water resistant zipper pouches are really useful for storing items separately and to ensure your sunscreen doesn’t leak over everything else. • Bring a kaftan or maxi dress to throw over your swimwear in order to make a stylish dash to the cocktail bar or the bathroom. • Pack rose water or a facial mist to spritz over your face and keep you refreshed. Bring a micro makeup bag with waterproof mascara, bronzer/ highlighter and lip gloss to help you achieve a seamless beach to cocktails transition. • Try to avoid looking at mobile devices for the entire time you spend on the beach. Take a good book or magazine with you, relax and enjoy the sounds of waves lapping on the shore.
