This March issue we look at SS19 and how you can incorporate the latest trends into that powerful prowess of yours. Speaking of which, take this time to celebrate other woman the way you’d want to be celebrated. Buy them flowers, coffee, or a spa day. Take a girlfriend under your wing and sit down to just listen to her latest struggle with whatever challenging kid-phase, work issue or personal struggle that they are dealing with. Pass along the inspiration you feel from other females. Tell them “Good job!” for juggling so much instead of the tired, “I don’t know how she does it.” Here’s the thing: we know we’re in a special club as females. We’re a pretty intimidating bunch. It’s a sisterhood and there’s a code. Everyone is different, and the best thing we can do for each other is to embrace that and just celebrate who we are. Yes, there’s International Women’s Day, but deem this as the day to kick-start the constant reminder that we should all pause and just compliment one another, for the simple reason of ‘just because’ - all year around. FINDING YOUR FEET To commemorate International Women’s Day we couldn’t help but get things off on the right foot with the beautiful MARY ALICE MALONE, Founder & Creative Director of eponymous luxury shoe label Malone Souliers. Where do you gain your inspiration for your innovative designs? Art and psychology are both personal interests of mine. I find that a lot of my inspiration comes from a blend of psychology, art and where they intersect. I really enjoy evolutionary psychology; how the male-female dynamic has got to be. Were we to approach the basis of its instinct, shoes are fundamentally of sensuous presentation, albeit to the same or opposite sex – an ode to one’s self-admiration and often the wish for its external celebration. I am constantly trying to understand ‘what?’ and ‘why?’ we do, uncovering the elements that make women 22

feel beautiful, and more so. Art is of same inspiration, heavily boding on concepts reflective emotion and meditative intimacy. Tell us about your biggest challenge that you have faced with Malone Souliers and how you have overcome such difficulties. It was hard in the beginning to launch a brand as an unknown in the luxury shoe market that was already saturated with established brands. You have been quoted as saying ‘Comfort is king’, how have you ensured that this vision is showcased throughout the design process in ‘Malone Souliers’s collections’? I design architecturally, and secondly aesthetically. Every line and its final form is considered, each shoe must support to a woman’s form and weight, so much so the position of the heel is exact to a millimeter to ensure that the weight is perfectly balanced, and not thrown out of sync with the rest of the body. Malone Souliers has already gained international status with a whole accolade of icons adorning their feet, such as when THOSE blockheeled Marjorie shoes were worn by Amal Clooney. As a label you have collaborated with British ready-to-wear label Roksanda and French couture house classic Emanuel Ungaro, is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with? Collaborating with others is a beautiful privilege of getting to see and understand another girl, another woman, and indeed another vision. We are actually in talks with some very exciting Ready-to-Wear brands at the moment that I would love to collaborate with, so watch this space. The mule style is what we are known for as a brand, in particular our iconic Maureen silhouette. This has been a favourite from day one. People are more aware of what they are wearing now-a-days and where their clothing is sourced. Do you follow a particular ethical approach throughout your portfolio? We are always mindful of our production process and the impact it has when creating a new collection. What is your plan for the near future, and where do you hope to take the brand in the next five to ten years? Ten years seems very far! I would love to simply continue to do what we are doing and what we do; creating comfortable and beautiful shoes that women want to wear and feel confident and empowered when they do. Since we are celebrating International Women’s Day this month, how would you describe a female who wears Malone Souliers? I design for a specific woman, but only in attitude and embodiment. I don’t care where she comes from - whether she’s a mother or a hedge fund banker, I am more fascinated by a woman who is unapologetically herself. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that not many people are aware of. Before I studied at Cordwainers and became a shoe designer I actually was a furniture maker! What are the key ingredients in your products that make them work? Most of the main ingredients come from science, such as Hyaluronic acid and Retinol which are the two most effective ingredients for skincare today – especially in anti-ageing products. We try to create the perfect mix of these effective ingredients with herbal extracts from medicinal plants, so every product will have the right balance of these two types of ingredients. What is your best skincare advice for glowing skin? I would say, make sure that you exfoliate skin and use a weekly mask, this will help to refine pores and give a lighter and brighter complexion. You should also avoid using water on your skin if you aren’t following it with a toner – water is not pH balanced to your skin, water has a neutral pH of 7 and skin should have a pH balance of around 5.5, therefore every time you splash water on your skin or you rinse your face with water it will upset the pH balance which can cause skin to become dry or sensitive - using a toner after you put water on your skin will help you to maintain a glowing complexion. FIT FOR A QUEEN With Mother’s day around the corner and female empowerment being celebrated this month, I thought it was only fair to treat myself to a beauty overhaul at GLOSS SALON & SPA.

’ll be honest, I’m one of those girls who doesn’t wash their hair too much, prefers it to have that ‘scruffy’ look (probably doesn’t look as good as I think it does) and I’m currently writing this as I sit with wet hair as I’ll most likely not move until its dried itself off. So what on earth would a girl like me want from Gloss Salon & Spa, a multi-faceted beauty salon in Juffair? Saying that, once I actually had a sneak peek at the place, I got a little bit excited. After all, I’m a big fan of self-

care so if it means I don’t have to wash my own hair for once, that’s great news. When I entered the salon I have to say, I was really impressed - I mean look at it, it’s stunning. I walked in and was greeted by their owner Sheikha AlAnood Al Khalifa, owner of Gloss Salon and Spa who created the concept, and her therapist and stylists who are ever-so-polite and attentive. And when the first thing she asks me is “Would you like a cup of coffee?” - I was sold, especially since they stock it exclusively from Nomad Urban Eatery. First on my beauty list was some waxing treatments, which were ridiculously overdue and wouldn’t look out of place in Jumanji, but hey, it’s been Winter for what feels like forever. I was a bit apprehensive about whether or not my pain threshold cold hack my legs and armpits being waxed, but, I needn’t of worried. Virgie was so efficient with the hot wax she made it a painless experience. You ladies HAVE to try this hot wax, they have strawberry, chocolate and gold flavours. Talk about a five star service! I’ve recently had my hair trimmed and girls, you all know that feeling when you first get it trimmed and you feel like you’ve lost all of your length...well I’m still mourning the loss of that length - so I didn’t want anything that would make it look shorter. Poor girl, I had purposely not washed my hair for days because I knew I was coming to Gloss but I’m sure she’s had worse, right?

He had done exactly what I asked, whilst also providing me with an overview of what my hair needs to ensure it steers away from being lacklustre. Stefan achieved the perfect ‘wavy-but-nottoo-wavy’ look so that my just past-shoulder length hair turned into a bob. I actually felt like my hair was too good for the rest of what was going on that day. Sometimes I’m so caught up in wearing the same clothes, going through the same routine with my hair and makeup and not really bothering to get dressed up too much that I forget what it’s like to be a little more ‘glam’. And the end result? I loved it, honestly. So, next time I’m off out for brunch, an event or treating a loved one...I know where I’m heading. The treatment bed was vast and I didn’t feel, as I have during so many other spa visits, that I was teetering on the edge of a narrow platform. The piece de

resistance was one solitary red rose placed delicately on the crisp white pillow. Pure decadence and sophistication. The properties of the oil and the infrared device promote circulation and expel toxins - something that everyone can benefit from. In turn this boosts the immune system which means that this treatment is useful for both people with existing medical conditions and those suffering from something more common such as muscle tension. My body was encompassed in an overwhelming relaxed state as my therapist worked her magic on each section of my body; kneading out the knots that had accumulated on my somewhat lethargic frame. The tension surrendered to the pressure of my therapists meticulous movement and technique as it succumbed to an higher level of comfort. The heat from the Onnetsu Wand complemented the deep-tissue massage perfectly and eliminated by body from any remaining strain - this wand is actual magic and will become a regular staple in my well being regime. It’s important to note that during the consultation stage you can discuss your preference of pressure. The carefully directed massage followed by the application of the wand was both stimulating and relaxing. Usually massage treatments create a sense of relaxation or invigoration but this treatment genuinely generates a sense of wellbeing in addition to this and my body felt cleansed and refreshed. The Onnetsu Treatment was a revelation to me, in that I had not expected it to have such positive, immediately evident effects on my entire body. Undoubtedly repeating the treatment regularly would be beneficial in order to maximise its effects and make lasting changes to existing medical conditions. However, it is definitely worth experimenting with it as a standalone treatment. As I entered the restaurant the styling immediately struck me. It is best described as a modern interpretation of a chic 70’s lounge. The ceiling with its irregular tessellated panelling and gold, velour and marble completing the theme. The furnishings are retro in the most contemporary way possible and provide diners with the option to create large communal seating areas with fitted leather benches spanning much of the perimeter of the restaurant. Perfect for larger groups wanting a convivial dining experience. The speciality menus offered to large groups will fuel the most intense corporate dialogue or create an inclusive, fine dining experience which will thoroughly delight clients, colleagues or employees alike.The menu is best described as Asian fusion, although the cuisine is innovatively unexpected and immersive. Dishes are curated from around the globe to create an eclectic menu bursting with vibrancy and originality yet still playing host to some familiar favourites. The appetisers were presented in the most sophisticated, precise way emulating the Asian style that inspires all elements of the menu. Steamed Edamame served traditionally with sea salt and Fresh Salmon surrounded by a moat of jalapeno dressing tantalised the palate and made us eager to explore further. The Duck Gyoza presented with a moreish dipping sauce provided another choice where conversation and discourse were not halted in order to devour the contents of the platter. The fact that the dipping sauce was presented in a rectangular dish which was large enough to be communal as opposed to personal stresses the restaurant’s commitment to providing a bespoke service tailored to the needs of business clientele. Piles of crispy deep fried squid and heaped, mixed leaves with shaved vegetables and wafer thin parmesan are delectable. The sense of theatre was evident throughout

CHIC Eats but the arrival of the sushi, sashimi and maki ‘tower’ was a real ‘wow’ moment. The mist created by the dry ice on arrival to our table emphasized the icy freshness of each morsel. Bento style boxes and sushi mats gave a nod towards both the construction and the heritage of this dish. The assortment was presented with delicate elegance, adorned with tiny edible flowers. The oriental crudité encased in sesame sushi rice looked too good to eat … Well, almost! In addition generous slices of fresh salmon, tuna and Japanese eel were cooled on a hunk of glistening ice. The variety, vibrant presentation and superbly high quality ingredients make this a show stopping choice. Once again the expertly sourced ingredients combined with innovative seasoning and spices make the likes of Corn-fed Baby Chicken served on a griddle hot plate so memorable. The title ‘Fish in a bag’ is both incredibly accurate and an absolutely glaring understatement of what this dish represents. A generous piece of Sea Bass steamed with burnt tomatoes, olives and herb dressing cooked to perfection and served in the bag that has retained every ounce of succulence and flavour.

The variety offered by the menu choices is extended into the dessert menu which will not fail to please every palate. The bespoke packages offered to larger groups, maximise this. Playful treats combines three of the Chef ’s most divine creations, this time including and array of delights including a pistachio chocolate bar with pistachio ice cream, along with a colourful rainbow display of macarons and seasonal fruit. The petit four are indescribable. You will just have to taste them for yourself! The meticulous attention to detail, innovative flavours and stunning presentation makes this a destination for all but particularly for those wishing to bring together clients or colleagues and impress them, not just with the business being discussed but the sense of theatre created as you dine. The levels of service, the comfortable, eclectic furnishings and the menus which will please all make this the go to venue to be, to see and be heard. If the phrase “All work and no PLAY” was true in this scenario then that would make for a little less fulfillment on the dining scale in Bahrain, but, thankfully PLAY is here to reign and be the perfect business partner all year round. @playrestaurantbahrain 78

Congratulations on being crowned number three on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Can you describe for us the four hands dining experience that awaits guests at Mahonia? 80

Thank you! This accolade was really unexpected, it’s flattering and a big responsibility too - we are still overwhelmed by joy. For the dinner at Mahonia, guests can expect an eight-course menu that I’ve created with Chef Pronzato. The menu, paired with grape, will include different signature dishes inspired by the menu at Mirazur. What are you most looking forward to about visiting Bahrain – how do you anticipate the food scene to be here? This will be my first visit to Bahrain, so I’m very excited to try and discover its unique cuisine, the flavours, colours and produce. What makes your style of cooking and presentation stand out? My style of cooking is influenced by the location of Mirazur and my inspiration comes from the surrounding environment, the mountains, the sea and my garden. We are lucky to be in Cote d’Azur, right in between the French Riviera and the Italian Riviera, the region known for its mild climate and orchards. I’ve spent many days finding the local farmers and fishermen who work respecting the traditions and the earth. This way I can let the produce I use express the best. I try to couple flavours that mutually enhance each other to create unexpected taste explosions, to challenge and excite my guests, and make something which works perfectly together. People travel to Mirazur to discover the flavour landscapes of this region, and I hope to bring the essences of the Cote D’Azur on a plate. How would you define fine dining and is that the term you would use to describe your calibre of cooking? I think fine dining restaurants are all different styles, but they share similar characteristics - such as the attention to detail, service and the perfect execution of dishes. This is what I do, take care of the details and execution to give our guests a unique experience.

CHIC Eats You’re a busy man – travelling the world and sharing experiences, visiting special events and running a restaurant - do you still enjoy the grind? Yes of course, it’s my passion! Cooking is what I am: I could not be anything else. I am also passionate and extremely proud of the produce, capturing the very best from both France and Italy, and marrying the two together to create beautiful food. Bahrain is a relatively small country, what made you decide to come to Mahonia restaurant to collaborate for a Four Hands Dinner? I’ve been to Emirates a few times, and fell in love with the culture, delicious food and produce. I’ve also heard good things about beautiful Bahrain, but never had the chance to visit before. Sawsan (Mahonia’s owner) has dined at Mirazur and we’ve met on a couple of occasions since. It was a lovely opportunity when she invited me to collaborate, and coincidently my ex Maitre’D Saif works in Mahonia too and told me what an exceptional restaurant it is. I thought it was the perfect moment to go and discover! Let’s take it back to the beginning – can you share with us the story of your early culinary career… It’s quite unusual… I decided that I wanted to cook when I was 20 years old, which is considered a late beginning in the industry. Sometimes a crisis can be dangerous but sometimes it’s a blessing and leads to a great opportunity! In fact, when I had to decide what I first wanted to do as a job, I was confused, I couldn’t find my way. I tried to follow in my dad’s footsteps as an accountant, but as with every job you must find passion in what you do, and this wasn’t the case here. I also tried to pursue a literary career, but that wasn’t for me either. It was my sister who reminded me of the pleasure and happiness I used to feel as a child when I used to cook with my grandmother. That memory turned out to be a real journey back to rediscovering myself and my true passion. Cooking is what I am; I could not be anything else. What inspires you to keep cooking after many years in the food industry? My garden, the beautiful location of Menton and my different trips around the world. What’s the greatest honour or compliment you’ve received as a chef? The greatest compliment for me is when my guests say it was the best food they have ever tasted, that it evokes childhood memories and lots of emotions. Food needs to transmit beauty and emotion in order to give a true unique experience! Going into 2019 and after having accomplished so much up until now – do you still have any resolutions to make come true over the next year and if yes, what are the goals? The challenge is to always remain consistent and to always push myself (and my team) to surpass the expectations of our diners. You cannot become complacent. Any advice for young budding chefs? he Porsche brand is synonymous with class, performance and sheer automobile driving pleasure. Over the last 70 years, their master craftsmen have created unforgettable vehicles such as the 1968 Porsche 917, the 1986 Porsche 959 and the classic 1994 Porsche 911. Any car manufacturer who can lay claim to machines of this calibre is doing something consistently right. But how do Porscheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest offerings compare with these iconic creations? We at Ohlala got the opportunity to thoroughly inspect as well as to test drive the Panamera GTS and needless to say, we were far from disappointed. We were officially handed the keys for the Panamera at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where we immediately began to inspect every line, curve and feature of this fine-looking machine. At first glance, the GTS made us smile and upon closer inspection we began to appreciate the true beauty this vehicle had to offer. It was obvious that the new Panamera

GTS has been significantly upgraded in a number of areas, including the appearance of the exterior with its black trim and badging. The GTS is also equipped with impressive 20-inch Panamera Design wheels as standard. The elegant interior of the vehicle houses only the very finest of materials and handcrafted finishes as one would expect of a Porsche. It features hallmark elements of black Alcantara and anodised aluminium, adding to the striking inner appearance of this luxury sports car. The overall design of the cabin was very impressive with all elements ensuring not only extreme comfort but also practicality. Some of the state-of-the-art innovations to be found in the GTS include the digital Porsche Advanced Cockpit, as well as assist systems such as Porsche InnoDrive with both adaptive cruise control and optional rear-axle steering. A remarkable feature of this car is the headup display that can be configured by the driver and projects all relevant information directly into oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s direct line of sight, in full colour. This feature is truly a novelty and gives the Panamera driving experience a futuristic feel. www.ohlala-magazine.com

We savoured the lengthy drive to Durrat Al-Bahrain, which gave us time to really appreciate the near perfect performance of the new Panamera as it effortlessly cruised along any road placed in front of her. We decided to hold off on any limit pushing at this stage as we knew our final destination would provide the ultimate environment to push the Panamera as far as we possibly could. After a quick cappuccino, we headed for the historic site of the Riffa Fort, where we could not help but ponder over the progress man has made from the historical construction of such structures to the intricate design of the GTS. Anxious to get the full engine experience of this Panamera, we headed for our last stop of the day. Before long, we found ourselves on the tarmac of the Formula One track, ready to experience the Porsche Panamera GTS in all of its glory. As the light changed, pressure was applied to peddle and bodies were thrust back against seats. The four-litre, V8 biturbo engine proved to be a thing of beauty as the vehicle hurtled forward at an ever increasing, seemingly unstoppable pace. The 460 hp of output and a maximum torque of 620 Nm combined with the standard sports exhaust system, ensured this car sounded as good as it drove. It powered from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds and we soon reached the top speed of 292 km/h. Not too shabby for a car weighing in close to 2.5 tonnes! There were no interruptions in tractive force as power is transmitted to the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system by the eight-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox. For a large sports car, the Panamera could certainly move and we pushed all of her capabilities to the limit. We found the deceleration of the braking to be most impressive as well as the grip and feel of the car on the corners. We were fortunate to have another run on the track after the sun had set, which served to highlight how consistently the GTS performs under different track conditions. By the time we arrived back at the Porsche Bahrain showroom, we were fully satisfied we had pushed the Panamera as far as we possibly could. Mothers! Each and every one of us has their own perceptions and experiences of the term motherhood, whether that’s as a child or indeed a parent. Some mothers have a biological attachment whereas the bond with others is purely emotional and nurtured amongst being developed due to the care and unconditional love that they offer. We all have a mother in one form or another but some of us have two or even more, work mums, football mums, aunties who feel like second mothers; they come in all shapes, sizes and forms. For many of us (including myself) this is another fine example of expectation and reality never quite marrying. At least, not for any length of time. There may be the odd fleeting burst of brilliance where the planets align and you feel triumphant, you’re actually doing a brilliant job as a mother...and then, ‘BANG!’ It all collapses like a Jenga Tower and you’re back to square one. The best part is that you then pick up all the pieces and start over again. This time with more determination and resilience that the tower may teeter but it will not, and I repeat, NOT topple. Just as you are mastering motherhood, honing it to a fine art even, you are thrown a curve ball … teenage hormones! It is a never ending cycle of trial and error of triumph and disaster but with the most exhilarating, glorious moments each time around. Motherhood isn’t just a series of jobs and chores but is also about being a role model, a teacher , therapist, disciplinarian and protector. Each day mothers wear so many ‘hats’ that choosing a fitting uniform or outfit for a mother would be an impossibility, although a ‘flack’ jacket and seemingly bottomless handbag would be essential! They may follow a variety of philosophies and approaches , employ techniques and tools but all have the same goal or outcome - to produce a much better version of themselves in the form of us, their children. I could leave you with a prophetic thought or quote about doing the best for our children, what defines motherhood or unconditional love but, no, I think JD Salinger, author of The Catcher in The Rye when he said, ‘Mothers are all slightly insane. It’s about channelling that insanity into fun, compassion, empathy and joy… in theory at least !
