With summer getaways high on our agendas and wedding season approaching perfecting that outfit has never been more important. While the dark depths of winter can feel like a gloomy place, it is the perfect excuse to look ahead to what the year ahead has to offer. It can be tricky to get it right, but we’re here to help you bring those legs out of hibernation. Kick back, relax and peruse through the fashion staples to be seen in this season. And while another few weeks of brisk weather and yet more storms poses a slightly bleak start, we’re already eagerly anticipating our new wardrobe. The good news? Spring kicks off officially this 20 March, and we have been ogling Spring Summer 20 Collections intently. Just as we were mourning the loss of sunshine and rediscovering our fondness for a cardigan, along came fashion week to indulge us in a whole host of drool-worthy fair-weather pieces as brands showcased SS20 in style. However, in this new decade, throwaway trends are becoming increasingly outdated, and we are all looking for clothes that will have a lasting impact within a capsule wardrobe. The Spring Summer 2020 runways were notably more commercial than usual, with a focus on classic legacy buys rather than whimsical and artistic creations, which could potentially fall into the fad or impractical category. Cis for Camisole
In the 19th century a camisole was a waist length undergarment worn over a corset. Generally it had broad straps, and tied at the upper edge with a drawstring. Often it was trimmed with lace or eyelet embroidery. In modern usage, the term may refer to any undergarment worn over a brassiere and ending at the waist. Blouses or tops that are cut in a style similar to the historic camisole are called camisole tops.
Dis for D’orsay Shoe
Refers to any shoe that has a closed heel and toe but which is cut down to the sole at the sides. It can be made with a heel of any type and any style of vamp (front). The style is one of several fashions named after the Count d’Orsay, a fashionable dandy living Paris in the mid-1800s.
Eis for Empire Waist
Location of the waistline just under the bustline. The name of this style comes from the high-waisted styles popular during the reign of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1804-1814).

Ais for A-line
Style line for apparel in which the dress fits at the shoulder or the skirt at the waist and gradually flares out to a wider hemline, causing it to resemble the letter A. The earliest A-line designs were created by Christian Dior in the 1950s.
Bis for Batwing
Sleeve that fits closely at the wrist but widens to be very full under the arm. From the back, the sleeve resembles a cape. Its name comes from its resemblance to the wing of a bat or its similarity to a type of coat worn in the late 1800s that had a cape-like sleeve.
A means of distributing fullness in some part of a garment by sewing a loose row of stitches, pulling the thread, and sliding the fabric along the thread to make soft folds in order to decrease the width of the fabric. n shirring three or more rows of gathers are placed parallel lines to achieve a decorative effect while also manipulating fullness.

The lower edge of a part of a garment that has been finished off with some type of sewing to cover the raw edge. Among the more common types of hems are: plain hem that is turned up and sewn into place; rolled hem used on sheer or delicate fabrics and rolled up by hand into a narrow hem that is sewn with small hand stitches; and faced hem, which is finished with a piece of fabric sewn to the bottom of the garment edge and then turned up to the underside and sewn into place.

Kis for Knit
A knit is a type of fabric that’s created using a technique where yarn is looped around. As compared to woven fabrics, a knit tends to be more malleable and stretches more easily.
Lis for Loafer
Moccasin-style classic slip on shoe that has a slotted strap at the front. The strap is stitched to the front (vamp) of the shoe. If the strap has a coin inserted in the slot, the shoe is called a penny loafer. If it has a tassel at the front, it is a tassel-top loafer. Sometimes a metal chain is fastened to the strap, and the shoe is called a chain loafer.

A hand technique for making small pieces of fabric and trimmings by knotting from two to four or more yarns, strings, or cords into a variety of decorative patterns. Niche fashion caters to only a specific group in society. Types of niche fashion can include gender-blurring fashion, vegan clothing and even haute couture—all catering to a small segment of the community at large.

i A basic shoe style that either laces shut or is closed with some other fastening. Details of styling and cut will vary. Originally, the term was used by shoemakers to distinguish between low cut shoes and boots. Today the major distinction is in the fact that the shoe has a closing.
Pis for Pagoda Sleeve
A sleeve that is shaped much like an Asian building called a pagoda. Like a pagoda, the sleeve is narrow at the top where it fits the upper arm closely, then gradually flares out to become wide at the bottom. The shape is similar to a funnel, and so this sleeve style may also be called a funnel sleeve.

Current fashion descriptions use the term ruching to refer to clothing with large areas of fullness gathered in to form a rippled effect. Historically, ruching was a trimming made by pleating bands of fabric and stitching the pleats in place. These bands were sewn onto various parts of the garment.

A basic dress style that has simple, straight lines and does not fit close to the body. Very popular in the 1960s and in other periods when unfitted styles are popular. One innovation in this style in the 1960s was the incorporation of a diagonal dart running from the side seam to the bustline. In comparison, a sheath is a simple, straight, but fitted dress in which vertical darts, bust darts, and shaping from side seams provide the fit.
Tis for Tie Dye
A method of decorating a garment or fabric by tying string or other material around pre-selected areas in order to prevent dye from being absorbed by these areas. The unprotected area takes up the dye, the tied area does not. To get multicolored effects, the fabric can be tied in other areas and dipped in another colored dye. This process can be repeated as often as desired.
Uis for Unstructured
A garment that is unstructured means that it has no structural design support such as boning and padding. An unstructured garment, when hung, should drop instead of appearing stiff.
Vis for Vintage
Fashion items that are at least 20 years old are considered vintage. The act of buying vintage can be seen as the most environmentally friendly way of buying fashion. And if something has been in pristine condition for the past 20 years or so, it would probably last much longer.
Wis for Watteau Back
The back of a garment in which box pleats are placed at the center back and the fabric released by these pleats falls loosely to the bottom of the garment. The name of this style derives from Jean Antoine Watteau, a French artist of the 18th century, in whose paintings women wore dresses with this design feature. The name was not applied to these designs until the 19th century.Today the style continues to be popular, especially in nightgowns and robes.
Xis for X
In fashion, X denotes a collaboration between two brands. It is incorrect to refer to the X as ‘by’, since in a collaboration, there shouldn’t be one party that’s more significant than the other.
Yis for Yoke
A yoke is a shaped pattern piece which forms part of a garment, usually fitting around the neck and shoulders, or around the hips to provide support for looser parts of the garment, such as a gathered skirt or the body of a shirt.
Zis for Zip
A zip is a fastener formerly known as a clasp locker, is a commonly used device for binding the edges of an opening of fabric or other flexible material, such as on a garment or a bag.

Amongst these was the White Rose high jewellery suite - a magnificent creation that harks back to a unique and royal gift from Garrard’s rich heritage. Inspired by the setting of the Cullinan V diamond for Queen Mary in 1911, the White Rose is centred around a pear-shape diamond surrounded by a series of radiating white gold lines. Showcasing the versatility of Garrard designs , the diamond centre can be detached and worn as an elegant and delicate brooch. Sitting alongside was the Kensington suite , consisting of a necklace, earrings and ring, all magnificently set with yellow and white Asscher and round cut diamonds. Also on display was the Albemarle Abstract suite, comprising over 30 carats of white diamonds; an exception creation and a true embodiment of extraordinary heritage and stories that the House continues to represent. In an international exclusive preview, Garrard was also delighted to showcase its new 2020 collection, Aloria. The exhibition featured
everything from exquisite diamonds and rare gemstones, as well as elegant timepieces and gold jewellery. Guests experienced Tiffany’s innovation in high jewellery first hand, with ingenious designs by Chief Artistic Officer, Reed Krakoff, taking center stage. Platinum pendants resembling hydrangeas with custom-cut round diamonds of over 39 carats is only a small example of the brilliance the showcase displayed. The iconic Butterfly necklace also made an appearance, with its platinum and cushion-cut morganite of over 11 carats, pink sapphires and diamonds totaling 52 carats, giving views and an inside look into the intricacies of Tiffany’s exquisite craftsmanship. The exhibition also displayed incredibly rare diamond rings, including designs by one of the most iconic and revered designers, Jean Schlunberger. His timeless Bird on a Rock clip and diamond bracelet afforded visitors a glimpse into the artist’s legendary ingenuity and his ability to transform nature’s wonder into objects of mesmerizing beauty.

and 118 white and brown diamonds. Dangling from the neck in rectangle and circle from a bold white gold chain, a statement-piece necklace boasts 360 emeralds and 146 white and brown diamonds. Sculpted for queens of resplendence, Pomellato also introduces its white gold Iconica choker, entirely covered with diamond pavé for a high-shine finishing touch. Smooth to the touch with gem-setting mastery, the shimmering choker incorporates 1,706 diamonds for a total of 25.8 ct. of true preciousness. A voluptuous 3.9 ct. Brazilian emerald cocktail ring in white gold with 328 white pavé diamonds embracing its bright green central stone, which twist design dances with sensuality. Never to be outdone, magnificent Tango clinks as a necklace with sculpted white gold links, as it combines over 2,920 pavé diamonds for a grand total of 65.3 ct. of sparkling perfection.
POMELLATO 2020 COLLECTIONS
Iconic traits from signature Pomellato collections are evidenced throughout the precious display. Among them, the beloved, ever-iconic Nudo ring in both maxi and classic sizes, each shining brightly with hand-cut deep blue doublets such as London blue topaz, agate, turquoise gemstones and precious diamond pavé. The same Nudo parure is presented in pink quartz and pink chalcedony with brown diamonds. The Nudo sautoirs feature masterful double-sided Clessidra-cut gems, dangling asymmetrically from delicate, often adjustable chains in rose and white gold featuring sky blue topaz with chrysoprase or pink quartz with pink chalcedony and pavé diamonds to add a highshine splash to the necklace, worn doubly or singly around the neck. For a more daywear look, the same colored gems are set onto the Nudo lariat necklace in rose and white gold, with pavé diamonds and an ingenious hidden circular clasp that acts as a feature of the necklace. The brand new Fantina collection includes a voluptuous diamond-edged ring in rose gold or white gold and 61 diamonds, to pair with a cuff bracelet of the same sensualcurves design (133 diamonds) and bold pendant earrings of 134 diamonds, topped off by a spectacular statement piece tear-drop pendant that features 59 diamonds or 150 diamonds set in the white gold version. For two layers that reveal both Pomellato’s goldsmith and diamond prowess, the Milanese maison presents a parure of rose gold in the form of an Iconica two-layer ring – one of gold and one of 32 diamond pavé gems. To complement, a shining solid gold bangle accentuated by a small 18 diamond circle accent, or, in a reverse design, with the pavé diamonds set into the entirety of the bracelet with 251 pavé diamonds. Instead or as well, Iconica drop earrings shimmer from the ears encrusted with 136 pavé diamonds, to complete the look.
With its Sabbia collection, Pomellato was exquisitely inspired this year, producing several pieces that play on the volume of its simple circle or rectangle design. The new bracelet with mesh gold links seems to almost recall a precious ‘chain mail’ design, graced with asymmetric circles of precious pavé, as 539 brown, white and black diamonds render the wearer truly unforgettable. To match, the choker necklace incorporates 970 diamonds of similar hues with a sassy circle clasp design that drops behind the neck. Four circles of diamond pavé are encrusted atop the finger in a fantastic ring with 111 diamonds in total. As complement, the necklace version combining white, brown and black diamond circles and rectangles can be singly, doubled or even tripled around the neck, depending on the look. For more musicality in movement, the sautoir pairs with any other piece from the collection, featuring 225 brown, white and black diamonds held by multi-sized chain links of eccentricity. Spectacular drop pendant earrings low from the lobes with 606 black and brown diamonds that fade to white – almost like precious charcoal dipped in the snow. With Tango, Pomellato demonstrates its gem-setting mastery in a white gold ring with 126 smoothly-set diamonds. For the wrist and neck, a matching bracelet (915 diamonds) and necklace (2021 diamonds), with shimmering pavé set into each diamond chain masterpiece. Revealing the colours of its true nature, Pomellato displays brightly coloured bracelets, each set with 744 gemstones of either chromo tourmaline, red spinel, blue sapphire, purple sapphire, ruby or emeralds.

Water is “the source of life” and, in our mission of protecting the environment, water plays a crucial role. According to a joint report by the World Health Organization and UNICEF last year, 785 million people still don’t have clean water close to home. After joint ventures with multiple non-profit organizations, such as the Clean Water project, the Reef Restoration Foundation or the Coral Restoration Foundation, this Oris travels to Siberia with a mission to protect the world’s largest reserve of freshwater, the deepest lake on Earth with a depth of 1,642 metres, which also contains a staggering 20% of freshwater on Earth: Lake Baikal. Some 300 rivers flow into Lake Baikal, and it’s home to thousands of species of endemic plants and animals. But it’s under threat from man-made pollution, much of it created by careless industries. For this reason, Oris has started a partnership with the Lake Baikal Foundation. Sales of the watch will help raise funds in support of “Point No.1”, a Lake Baikal conservation project run by the Scientific Research Institute of Biology at Irkutsk State University that’s also the longestrunning and most detailed environmental watermonitoring project in scientific history. “Point No.1” is supported by the foundation.

Naturally, as a watch dedicated to a project of this nature, this new edition is based on a dive watch, the classic, technical and robust Aquis Date model – which has been revamped in 2017. For the occasion, the base model is the men’s version, with a 43.50mm diameter stainless steel case, brushed and polished. The unique features of the Oris Aquis Lake Baikal Limited Edition are the dial and the bezel, which have been made using the colours found on Lake Baikal when it is frozen. In this instance, the ceramic bezel’s insert is presented in polished dark blue with an engraved 60-minute diving scale. Even more noticeable is the gradient dial, which is “frozen” light blue in its centre and dark blue on the edges. The dial features metallic hands and applied markers, all filled with Super-LumiNova. DON’T WALK AN UNEVEN LINE
yeliner, specifically, can really perk up your peepers when wielded properly. But, on the flip side, it can also really drag down your makeup look when used incorrectly. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind before you grab that eye pencil or liquid liner.
While no one is calling for absolute perfection when it comes to your eye makeup, there’s a fine line between sophisticated and sloppy. Jagged, uneven eyeliner can ruin an otherwise good look. The biggest offender is liquid liner as it requires an ever-sosteady hand and it can be quite the challenge to apply smoothly. Of course, it also delivers a strong, fluid line which means drama in spades. To keep a liquid liner straight, avoid tugging at the outer corners of the eyes. When you let go of the eye, the line will appear distorted. Plus, that tugging over time can lead to wrinkles. On the other hand, a pencil or gel product is far more forgiving if you’re in a rush.
DO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLOUR If you’re stuck on black eyeliner only, then you’re missing out on a range of hues that can really boost your eye colour. For example, a brown shade is a less harsh option that creates a softer, more subtle effect. A deep, jewel-toned eyeliner such as an emerald green or sapphire blue can work wonders to bring out the colour of your eyes whereas a white or nude eyeliner on the lower lid works to brighten the eye, creating a refreshed, awake appearance.

Like many things in life, there is too much of a good thing when it comes to eyeliner, especially if you’re painting too much product on the lower lid. Overdoing it with a thick line under the eye is too bottom-heavy and can actually make your eyes look smaller rather than enhancing them. You’re also more likely to end up with undereye smudges if you go this route. Better to swap the dark, thick liner for a lighter line and a subtler shade of taupe or light brown. And avoid using liquid liner on the bottom lid, too; it’s just too dense and will be dripping down your face by midday.
As much as we’d like to tell you that there is a miracle way to make your eye makeup and eyeliner stay perfectly in place from morning until night, at the end of the day, you will still have to reapply and touch it up. For an extra dose of staying power, waterproof gel liners are often your best bet for liner longevity, especially for the bottom lid. They also have less chance of smearing or running. Hermès, the luxury French fashion house behind the iconic Birkin bag and logo jewellery collection, has announced its first foray into makeup with the launch of Rouge Hermès, a brand new lipstick line. I feel very comfortable with the beauty team and Nicolas Degennes is a very special human being. Do you remember when you first discovered the Givenchy brand? If I remember correctly, the first time I laid eyes on a Givenchy collection was when I entered my agency and my agents were working on models for the new fashion show – it was amazing. I instantly wanted to walk for the brand... and I eventually did! What does wearing makeup mean to you? Makeup offers infinite possibilities. Most of the time, I just want to be myself. I don’t like my everyday makeup to be too showy. There are excellent tools available to achieve a natural, yet enhanced, look. It’s important for me to be able to recognise myself in the mirror. What makes women beautiful? Their self-assurance, definitely. In my professional experience, what makes women stand out is their approach to life, what they believe in, what they think of their everyday existence. There are no universal beauty criteria... Women’s beauty comes in different forms, and working with Nicolas has made me want to discover more of this beauty. His portraits of Asian women from his shoots in Asia are absolutely stunning.

Can you describe your beauty routine? I’d say my routine is quite minimal. For the daytime I like to keep it clean: a bit of Teint Couture Everwear Concealer wherever is needed (usually jet lag asks for some under the eyes!), highlighter on the top of the cheeks, eyelids and a touch on the nose, and some brown golden loose powder on the cheekbones for that sunkissed look. Lashes curled and a touch of mascara Volume Disturbia. That’s all for a healthy and natural glow. For a night look I usually stick to terrain and nude tones that go well with my olive skin, creating a light smokey eye, then maybe a strong red on the lip, or I play with a more unexpected colorful lip. I think the more you play around with the different products, the more you discover how they can be used in creative ways. And for your lips, what is your favorite Le Rouge colour? It’s so hard to choose. I love the classic Le Rouge but I think Le Rouge Deep Velvet has some of my favorite shades from all the products that have been released lately. I love the classic, timeless, strong red Le Rouge L’Interdit No.333 and some more bold and innovative ones such as Le Rouge Deep Velvet No.37 Rouge Grainé and Le Rouge Night Noir No.1 Night in Light. The texture that
I love most is definitely Le Rouge Deep Velvet. I think it is revolutionary in a way because I have not seen a product that is able to hold this texture for so long. You can get this texture in the market but it will dry out your lips and won’t be long lasting, making you re- apply many times throughout the day. I love that it lasts, moisturises and has a very unique finish to it while doing all that. What makeup tips can you share with us? Of course I have learned a lot from watching Nicolas and his team! Especially about preparing the skin, because we always follow the same routine before every shoot. For instance, before doing my makeup, his team applies a moisturising mask to my face, which gives me an incredibly luminous complexion once the makeup is on. After the base has been applied, the skin grain is literally transformed. It’s things like that, like learning how to thoroughly moisturise your skin before applying makeup, using the right methods to apply the products, and sometimes even knowing how to apply them differently for a more surprising makeup result. @givenchybeauty / @ndegennes

fter a hectic week I thought I’d treat myself to a few hours of rest, relaxation and pampering, and where better to save me from my incredulous week than at The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. From the minute you walk through the door you are greeted by warm, friendly staff and an ambience of serenity and peace enthralls you. For me, this is the perfect combination allowing me to immediately feel at home, and thus let myself unwind, which is ordinarily no easy feat. 58

After changing into my swimming costume I was enrobed in a luxurious white gown and I deposited my belongings in an electronic locker, allowing my feet to snuggle into the cloud-like slippers. The Spa’s vast array of facilities, treatment rooms, saunas, pools and salt room ensured that my soul was well sustained throughout my visit. My journey started in their salt room and trust me, this is not just a trending spa fad as the benefits of salt therapy are wide-ranging. Salt levels affect our cell activity, energy and blood sugar levels. The calming and detoxifying effects can support the immune, nervous and lymphatic systems. I unwound here for 10 minutes before jumping into their steam room and then finally their whirlpool. This pool has a range of pulsating hydrotherapy jets to stimulate your circulation and blood flow, but, more importantly it elevates your relaxed state to additional heights. I’d highly recommend that you arrive early to your appointment to enjoy these facilities prior to your treatment as it really makes for the ultimate experience. As I showered I couldn’t help but acknowledge that each element is so thoughtfully organised and designed to make guests feel cherished. Lounge areas are also tailored to the individual needs of each client. You have the option of a variety of lounge areas in which to unwind prior to your treatment or to enjoy the afterglow, whether that be basking in the lounge illuminated by bright sunshine or the peaceful sanctuary of a more dimly lit relaxation area.

At this point you could have knocked me over with a feather as I felt that I was personifying the very meaning of ‘zen’, but the surprises kept on coming! After this initial insight into the spa and its repertoire, nothing could have calmed me for the next wave of relaxation. I was further welcomed and escorted off to one of their treatment rooms that was beautifully prepared and ready for my arrival by their senior therapist Olga. Now, this lady is incredible, as is the treatment. After our consultation, we delved into more delectable enjoyment as my Anne Sémonin’s Precious Pearl Ultra Lift facial commenced. This particular facial is revered for its anti-ageing, regenerating and radiance enhancing properties to benefit even the dullest of skin. Here I was treated to an entire array of natural, beautifully scented products from the Anne Sémonin range. Starting with a Botanical Milk facial cleanse, the laminaria seaweed and hazelnut oil allowed for any impurities to be removed easily. Next up, was the Botanical Toner with deionised water and witch hazel concentrate that gently toned, soothed and rebalanced my temperamental skin. Now, this next stage of the process is truly impressive as they combine three different peels into one powerful mask; chemical, mechanical and biological elements from fruit acids, marine extracts and enzymes for that refined yet glowing complexion. The good times didn’t stop there as my skin drank in their Firming Intensive Complex Essential Oils that is enriched with a concoction of some of the most powerful essential oils to leave your skin feeling refreshed, firmer and fully moisturised. part was beautifully hedonistic to the senses. Olga ensured that every stroke and product used was to optimise and complement my specific skin type, including a series of comprehensive lifting and drainage massage techniques to uplift my tired complexion. The accompanying shoulder and decolletage massage ensured that any tension that had been built-up over the working week was deliciously unravelled over the course of the next hour and a half. This ultimate wrinkle-fighting spa facial treatment restores the skin’s lack of firmness and tone leaving your skin and face contours in top condition. I honestly felt like I could cut someone with my chiseled cheekbones post-treatment! The Super Active Serum is a natural resin or myrrh that plumps wrinkles and fine lines, whereas the marine spring water further firms and hydrates that will have you looking like a teenager again. Living in Bahrain we all know the heritage of pearls and its presence in historical trading, but not everyone knows the beauty properties that they also encompass. With soft supple hands that just melted into my skin my therapist had clearly been well-trained, knowing exactly how much pressure to apply on different parts of my face to stimulate collagen and give me that coveted youthful glow. I was sinking into a semi-conscious state and feeling wonderfully pampered. The sensitivity in my neck, and the large knots in my shoulders were now reduced greatly and I’d felt very different to the woman who walked through The Spa doors only a couple of hours ago!

Even though this is done at lightning speed you are never at a position where you feel rushed, rather you feel incredulously catered for and pampered in the acute time that you have squeezed into your calendar. After all, we are all guilty of not finding the time to find some ‘me time’, and creating an abundance of excuses, but no more! Your time is precious and here at Dessange they value that time. Truly living up to its name, Al Areen Palace & Spa is a spectacular sight without even setting foot into the gorgeous Arabian architectural mastery. Providing you with space for relaxation and privacy, the hotel grounds mirror Arabian Elegance from the swaying palm trees to the design of the villas. Upon setting foot in this luxurious and serene place, it is almost hard to miss the fact that Al Areen emulates an aura of magical and mystical far away Arabian lands. Bordering the spectacular grounds of the Al Areen Wildlife Sanctuary, Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park and the Bahrain International F1 Circuit, the resort is a perfect retreat that spans over 131,000 square meters. There is an authentic atmosphere of tranquility, distinct luxury and exclusivity to meet the needs of their sophisticated client base. I had decided to treat myself to an overnight staycation in one of their seventyeight intricately decorated private villas; the first luxury in-villa styled hotel in the Kingdom of Bahrain. As I was shown around my 740sqm of paradise I couldn’t believe my eyes at the two king size bedded rooms, outdoor showers, private majilis (accommodating up to 10 guests), steam rooms and dining room. My hedonistic journey commenced as I was introduced to Gossip @ Al Areen which allows for a special breakfast followed by spa treatments for ladies. The pastries were so beautifully presented I couldn’t help but capture that all important instagram moment. Ladies, the next one is Saturday 14th March from 8:30am to 1:30pm, so, get the girls together and enjoy a decadent day full of high tea, manicure and foot massages… girly giggles guaranteed. After check-in I allowed myself to unwind in the private villa making use of all the facilities. Later I immersed myself in their bath that truly epitomises the meaning of luxury. So much so that I’d even brought a bath bomb in anticipation of this delight. After a day of girly bliss, my husband joined the staycation after he had finished work. Once we’d freshened up, we were escorted onto an artfully painted golf-buggy from the pre-arranged buggy-service that is available and chauffeured to Keizo, a romantic setting with picturesque views of the lake alongside the whole resort. You couldn’t help but take in the surroundings where everything is decorated with a delicate flourish of lights. The interior itself when we walked into Keizo is something of grandeur and is simply mesmerising. Our evening host warmly welcomed us and proved very attentive and escorted us to our table within the Keizo tent. This really was a breathtaking moment as we sat down and cast our eyes over the lake. Their in-house violinist further amplified the ambience providing the perfect backdrop for this coveted romantic setting.
You cannot help but awe over the presentation of each dish that is brought to your table. Keeping with the restaurant theme each meal was served Japanese style which further added to the authenticity of the Asian restaurant. The kanafeh prawns were truly the highlight for us and we admonish you to visit at once! After harboring our food babies, we ended up in a food-induced coma after we walked back to our villa we passed out on the extremely comfy luxurious king-sized beds. A personal butler is allocated to you on arrival to cater to all of your needs, be it to arrange for a buggy, in-room dining or to arrange an incredible floating breakfast in your private pool. Trust me, this was such a beautiful touch when I woke up from a blissful sleep and wanted to make the most of the sunshine and my surroundings - a unique experience that everyone must try. If you don’t want to take the plunge, you can arrange to enjoy a healthy breakfast in the confines of your villa wearing one of their plush dressing gowns and slippers, or visit Keizo and enjoy their bountiful international buffet breakfast with dishes from around the world. After a full day of relaxation and making the most of my complimentary use of the largest Spa and Wellness Centre in Bahrain, I couldn’t help but fall in love with Live Your Life’s, Al Areen Spa & Wellness’ Ice Igloo and also the largest hammam in Bahrain. The Igloo is a one-of-a-kind facility in Bahrain - the unique and refreshing experience helps boost blood circulation. Rubbing fresh ice on your body lightens your skin whilst also enhancing your circulatory system, so it comes as no surprise that it is highly recommended for those who wish to address a specific cellulite-prone area! After such an immersive day I decided on pampering myself further. After all, it’s only fair that I make the most of my staycation and maximise my time here, right? My certified therapist through a variety of pressure and technical strokes unknotted me and alleviated the stress that I was allowing to burden my posture. At one point, I could have swore that I fell asleep as I was so relaxed. The aroma of essential oils filled the air and cocooned me. You truly do not realise how beneficial and important a massage is until you realise the difference posttreatment where you reap the rewards. I hadn’t noticed how stiff I was or how dull my pain was until the pressure was alleviated. You can also indulge in a variety of wellness and detox activities such as Aqua Zumba in the private indoor pool-area with a qualified personal trainer if you wish, but this visit I was all about immersing myself into full relaxation mode. The golden fixture that encompasses the ceiling is breathtakingly stunning that it is no surprise that this is host to an array of weddings and events. Al Areen Palace and Spa is the perfect wedding destination and backdrop for those lifelong memories and special photos. Since I’m forever guided by my stomach next up on the lunch agenda was Saffron restaurant that serves Khaleeji and Indian fusion cuisine. After tucking into some fresh bread we were presented with two of their signature dishes; Mixed Grill and Bamboo Biryani Rice with Chicken. The grill was served with a selection of mixed mezze accompanied by the delectable mixture of kofta, chicken and lamb cutlets. They really know how to tenderise and marinade their meat, I must say! Now, I am not exaggerating when I say this but this is the best biryani that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. The sauce danced over the tender chicken so beautifully I could cry tears of joy. One cannot talk about this dish without also mentioning the presentation where it is unearthed from a bamboo device… perfect for that Instagram boomerang moment! EXPERIMENT 9 For Spring/Summer 2020, IAM MAI introduces a collection inspired by the simplicity of structure. The graphic lines of a staircase defines ‘Experiment 9’, where the sequence of stairs is reflected through the creative use of pleating. Shot at the dynamic location of Al Safa Art and Design Library, a platform that stems far beyond a traditional library, IAM MAI’s SS’20 collection exudes unconventional styles procured from traditional silhouettes. Merging structure with shadows is portrayed through the art of pleating fused with asymmetrical patterns in pleated light taffeta. Meanwhile, playing with the way the sunlight falls on structured elements is brought out with metallic dotted chiffon in matte and glossy finish. A strong colour palette featuring earthy tones of stone and black is fused with delicate shades of white, light blue and faded pink. While introducing a glaze-effect silk blend organza emphasising the clarity of each design. Voluminous culottes, skirts and tops feature hints of tonal dressing while double layer dresses are introduced for a feminine touch. Experimenting with minimal colour blocking, unique details lie in Mai’s incorporation of hidden belts and pleated sleeves. A R T I S T R Y FUSIONS by Tala are self-proclaimed ‘enemies of the conventional, the foes of mediocrity, those that create upon the plate’ and we couldn’t agree more.
T
he Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention and Spa is one of the most fascinating resorts I have had the pleasure of visiting as it is a spectacular series of structures and levels which house an array of microcosms showcase the very best in cuisine and entertainment from Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Vast lobbies and lounges adorned with sculpted marble and glistening chandeliers lead on to host some of the 10 restaurants that The Gulf Hotel proudly boasts. The most exciting gastronomic addition as of late is undoubtedly Fusions by Tala. Vivacious Bahraini Head Chef Tala Bashmi is at the helm of this culinary venture and is proving herself as the catalyst behind the international fine dining aspect of modern Middle Eastern cuisine. Tala is a passionate woman who is evidently very disciplined in her art which is no surprise as she trained at the Culinary Arts Academy, Cesar Ritz in Lucerne, Switzerland and showcases said expertise in abundance at Fusions by Tala. The décor is earthy and stripped back-to-basics in the most sophisticated and modish way. Table tops are crafted from slices of wood with sleek glassware and cutlery adorning them. Distressed plasterwork and industrial light fittings illustrate perfectly the theme of fusing contrasting elements just as the menu

here does. The restaurant offers views across the Bahraini skyline, both inside and at their seasonal terrace. Whichever backdrop you decide on it will prove the perfect setting for intimate dining, business gatherings or indeed, any catchup with friends and family. Chef Tala runs an open kitchen which adds an additional layer of difficulty to any busy service. Organisation and seamless teamwork of the five positioned here are essential to create a professional fluidity as dishes are constructed as diners look on, and Chef Tala executes this vision seamlessly. The philosophy is creating an immersive atmosphere so that guests are included in the composure of each dish before devouring it. This method is reflective of the honesty component that flows throughout everything here at Fusions by Tala. A dedication to sourcing local products from the various produce markets across Bahrain and a mix of modern and traditional techniques such as a charcoal grill which finishes off dishes perfectly as they are taken from the sous-vide. Contemporary techniques prepare meat and fish exquisitely alongside traditional methods that exude that authentic bite and taste, especially that of the charcoal grill that can also utilise wood dependent on the desired cooking fusion. As we were shown to our table we were presented with a hot towel infused with lemon grass enhancing the experience from the first moment. Simple touches of finesse such as this throughout the meal left us feeling spoiled and content. This concept is further reflected in their Liquid Courage menu with the artisanal approach to the muddled drinks and mocktails. Signature crafts are housed in an array of mixology based talisman, such as a bird and an apple further amplifying the immersive atmosphere. We decided on Chef ’s Surprise Five Course Tasting Menu which includes rare ingredients and hidden surprises. Let’s begin with their bread selection - that included some gluten free rice bread - that paved the way for our tasting extravaganza. The Bahraini bread with fennel seeds was

the perfect vessel with which to load the Date Molasses butter with its sweet and salty notes. Presentation is carefully thought out and not at all expected. The butter was presented in a dish which looked like a highly polished coconut shell further highlighting the natural undertone of everything here at Fusions by Tala. The presentation of each dish exudes raw, natural tones and aspects whilst reflecting the artistry and heritage of Bahraini culture throughout the fresh ingredients. The vibe here is unpretentious and the key component is to enjoy food to its very core. The most luxuriant and flavoursome chicken liver pate was served with dates and caviar which proved the perfect accompaniment to its delicious chicken skin. Next up, we were served an off-the-menu delicacy of Sous-vide egg which was adorned with squid ink crumble, Japanese mushrooms (two types - shimeji white and brown) and truffle foam. It looked so intrinsically beautiful that we had to admire it for a minute or two before devouring it. Despite the fact that we did not want this to come to an end the introduction of a palate cleanser before the main course was inspired. Pomegranate and mint sorbet prepared us for our next tantalising treat. As described on their food menu, The Main Event comprises a selection of Sea, Land and Earth elements, or rather dishes for you to select. As we had chosen the Tasting Menu we left it up to Chef Tala’s creativity. We were not disappointed. As the Tikka was served, the aroma of tender meat filled the air. The seared cuts of beef tenderloin were complemented perfectly with the different composition of foie gras, khubiz, black lime and also edible activated charcoal. My dining partner and I continued to converse in ramblings of ‘ooo’ and ‘ahhs’ with every moreish bite. This was certainly
my dining highlight and I advise you all to try this delectable icon. All good things must come to an end and that it did with their Sweet Finale. There was certainly no protruding bottom lips when the Baklawa arrived! As it plumed its filo encasement garnished with edible gold, the saffron ice cream, mango and orange blossom intertwined in its sweet culinary melody. Since releasing their very first production automobile, the Prototype 356, in 1948, this German vehicle manufacturer has gone from strength-to-strength and provided us with a multitude of ever more impressive offerings over the decades. Most recently, the brand has released the 2020 model of the already highly prized Porsche Macan S. We at Ohlala recently received the privilege of test driving this new version, compliments of the great team at Porsche Middle East & Africa FZE. As expected from Porsche, the new streamlined 90

PORSCHE REAFFIRM THEIR PRESENCE IN THE LUXURY SUV SEGMENT WITH THE 2020 PORSCHE MACAN S. exterior of this five-door luxury crossover SUV is sublime. Its flowing lines and curves ensure the entire body looks magnificent, providing a visual harmony of power and panache. The Macan’s latest facelift includes a threedimensional rear LED light bar that extends across the width of the vehicle, giving it an overall wider appearance. At the front end,
the newly shaped LED headlights are fitted as standard whilst the car bonnet, designed to wrap around them, adds a novel touch. The Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), used to control light distribution, is offered as an optional extra. The standard dual, double exhaust system is another feature that hints at the performance capabilities of this outstanding vehicle. The Macan’s chassis has been overhauled to ensure maximum comfort and overall efficiency. DIVA Drives intelligent all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system. These tyres have been designed with superior capabilities to ensure ultimate performance on the roads. The Porsche Active Stability Management (PASM) active damper control system, heightadjustable air suspension with optimised rolling pistons and new shock absorber hydraulics, as well as Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), are all available as optional extras, and have been designed to improve the model’s driving dynamics and handling even further. More than impressed with the outer beauty and functional design of the Macan S, we turned our collective attention to the interior. We sighed as we slipped into the comfortable front seats, instantly enveloped in a sense of luxury and relaxation. Throughout the interior, the designers have used the highestend materials and trimmings with every finish highlighting the perfection of their
craftsmanship. The front seats are heated and cooled and allow for pre-set settings for both the driver and front passenger. The rear seating offers a decent amount of leg and head room, whilst the cargo area provides ample space for an entire family’s luggage. The optional GT sports steering wheel, borrowed from the Porsche 911, feels great in hand. The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system comes complete with a 10.9inch, full-HD touchscreen and includes, as standard, navigation, mobile phone connection, two audio interfaces and intelligent voice control. This system can be adjusted to suit an individual’s personal preferences. Having completed our internal inspection, it was time to engage the ignition. The new Porsche Macan S boasts a freshly developed 3.0 litre turbocharged V6 engine and it sounds superb. This high-performance machine delivers 354 hp (260 kW ) and has a
maximum torque of 480 Nm. This translates to a top speed of 254 km/h and when equipped with the optional Sports Chrono Package, can shoot from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. Pretty impressive for a vehicle weighing in at 1870 kgs. Weaving along the roads, we found the Macan S to carry its weight very well, providing a comfortable, well-balanced, agile and efficient performance. Importantly, the designers have managed to reduce the vehicle’s emissions to ensure it is friendlier to the environment. The performance of the 2020 Macan S is strengthened by its impressive handling, ample traction and superior braking system, ensuring the driver is in full control throughout the duration of the drive. These components along with an array of safety features allow one to feel at ease knowing the safety of you and your loved ones have been at the heart of the design of this family orientated vehicle.

If women were really born with a maternal instinct, we would see birth rates stay the same through the years. Even the feminist movement of the 1960s and ‘70s that expanded educational and workforce opportunities for many women shouldn’t change which women decide to be parents. But childfree adulthood has been on the rise since then. What we think of as maternal instinct comes from our culture rather than our nature. Children – and girls in particular – are taught from a very young age that one of the most important things they can do when they grow up is to become parents. A web search for “girls’ toys” and “boys’ toys” quickly reveals that parenthood is girls’ domain. Perpetuating the myth of maternal instinct harms all women, whether they have children or not. Women who choose to have children are told that it’s the most important thing they do. It is no accident that pressure on mothers to intensively nurture their children increased at the very time more women began working outside the home. As women’s labour force participation grew, their share of the work at home did not decline. Instead, women became subject to an ideology which holds that good mothering means labour-intensive mothering. While mothers are pressured to intensively parent, women who opt out of parenthood are treated as social pariahs. We’re told that the most important job any woman can hold is motherhood, that childfree women are selfish, and even that they’re bad for society. Nevertheless, some women do feel compelled for reasons they cannot always articulate to have children. And, in the absence of an easy explanation, it’s understandable to believe that natural instinct is the reason. But the more we look into it, the more we find that’s not the case. This month, let’s recognise the women who have opted to take on the difficult work of good mothering by giving them credit for their choice and their efforts. Our gratitude will be appreciated much more than were we to discount motherhood as what happens naturally without their intentional effort.
