With not many sporting events happening lately, the anticipation of the Winter Olympics 2022, taking place in Beijing, is growing even bigger. Planned to start at the beginning of February, the competition is less than a year away. Total Bliss Having shied away from the salon for many, many months, Liz O’Reilly experiences a taste of indulgent paradise at The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Bahrain.

ith so many salons and spas only offering Covid-limited services at the moment, I have to admit it has hardly seemed worth the journey. So, my trip to The Ritz-Carlton Spa is both much anticipated and, if I’m honest, much needed! I am met at the entrance by my therapists, Betty and Leah, who offer a smiling welcome behind an impressive amount of personal protective equipment – their uniforms are encased in an outer suit and faces bear masks, goggles and a visor. We head off to tackle my seriously neglected feet and hands. And, showing absolutely no sign of censure, despite the rough skin on my feet and dehydrated hands and nails, Betty explains that all products used are either from ESPA or Natura Bissé. Both brands are cruelty-free and vegan, quite a big area of concern for me. Ruby red rose petals are scattered throughout the treatment room and even in the water where I lower my feet (underwater lighting also changes colour) as I sink into the chair. Now, excuse me for going off on a tangent but this chair really does deserve a substantial mention. Regular massages were my thing before the pandemic and their absence has grieved me sorely for the last 12 months. So, to say I am excited by the ‘bells and whistles’ massage chair would be something of an understatement. No gentle undulation here. Oh no, this is almost a fully-fledged masseuse encased in black leather. It pummels, it kneads, it pushes against various muscle groups and it’s the best substitute for the real thing that I’ve come across. So much so that I repeat the 20-minute programme three times! (Much to my therapists’ amusement.) 48

SPA Spotlight I’m also impressed by the attention to detail from Betty and Leah who make sure to check my preferred length and shape before starting on my nails. I usually hate having my cuticles clipped. Nine times out of 10 it results in pain and bleeding. But these two are mistresses of their art and before I know it both nails and cuticles are knocked into shape without me feeling a thing. Relaxation oil is rubbed into my arms while my legs are treated to a salt scrub to remove dry skin before being gently massaged with a hydrating potion of lavender, rose geranium and rosemary. Afterwards my skin feels amazing and the application of polish on my finger and toe nails completes the treatment before I head to another room for my facial. Betty recommends I go for the ESPA Age Defying Facial and I couldn’t agree more! Years of living in the sun, a youth spent under sunbeds and various other lifestyle factors have left my complexion needing all the help it can get and this promises regeneration with a lifting and plumping effect. Betty begins with a gentle cleanse using hydrating cleansing milk followed by toner to remove the last vestiges of dirt clinging to my pores. It’s a shock that both substances are cold (particularly as I am luxuriating on a heated treatment bed) but within seconds my skin is welcoming the soothing feel of the lotions and Betty’s gentle strokes across my face. I’m quite concerned about the next stage, a scrub, otherwise known as a refined skin polish. My face is pretty sensitive and scrubs can be a little overwhelming, but I needn’t have worried. Again, Betty is gentle and applies minimal pressure, so I am barely aware of the benefits I’m receiving.

Next, a dry skin brushing machine is passed over my face to slough off dead skin. This is a slightly weird feeling but not unpleasant and it’s quickly followed by another application of cool toner before we move on to the main events. First, ESPA Regenerating Face Oil is applied to my skin and gently rubbed in using circular strokes to target fine lines and wrinkles. And, wow, I can immediately feel my face drinking it in. This is followed by the application of the Tri-Active Lift and Firm Mask and, if it’s possible for the skin to sigh in relief, this does the trick! Another round of cleansing and toning follows before my face is slathered in Optimal Skin Pro-Serum, to maintain the PH balance and hydration, followed by 24-hour Regenerating Moisture Complex and sun protection. I leave feeling refreshed with my skin looking better than it has in an awfully long time – an effect that is still evident 24 hours later. March is the month to celebrate mums and all women in the world for International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day. And a great way to show your admiration is with feel-good gifts, such as a spectacular beauty day at Dessange. As a mum myself, I got to experience Dessange’s Mother’s Day Package 1, which includes a classic manicure and pedicure, organic hair treatment and blow-dry. I am a working mum, and women like us don’t really get the luxury of turning off life, so we can enjoy being treated like the queens we all are. Instead, everything and everyone else comes first in our lives, long before ourselves. During these tough days that we are going through, there’s nothing better than to relax in the trusted hands of Dessange’s attentive staff. All the materials used are disposable and all the hygiene measures are in place. I started my day being spoiled by the lovely ladies Jeany and Ashvita, the duo worked on my pedicure and manicure, respectively. Jeany asked me to wash my hands as soon as I arrived and requested me to pick the colours I wanted for my fingers and toes. I asked for her opinion and she said that because it is still winter, I should go for a dark colour for my feet and a lighter tone for my hands. I promptly followed her advice and, because grey is one of Pantone’s colours of the year, I went for that. I just love the nail station, the long wall with all possible colours that go beyond your imagination and the big and comfy chairs, specially designed for the best experience for a simultaneous manicure and pedicure. While I waited, Joanne’s angel hands massaged my shoulders and I thought I was in heaven! After washing off the mask, it was time for the most perfect blow-dry ever. It may be the treatment that left the texture of my hair softer, or Priyanka’s wonderful skills or even the magic of this place, but for sure my, usually unruly, curly hair was bouncy and picture-perfect. Cosy and semi-private, we joined the hotel on a Thursday night for the launch of the latest sushi menu that has been made available from Thursday through Saturdays throughout March, from 6pm to 11pm. Perfect to unwind and relax to, with an interesting collection of selected beverages, sushi nights at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay will undoubtedly leave your eyes gleaming with satisfaction and excitement throughout your entire visit. Presented with the special menu, there was absolutely nothing on it that we weren’t ready to try! Starting with the Japanese Crab Salad, the freshness of the ingredients used immediately took us by surprise from our first mouthful. Comprised of loaded crab sticks, crunchy cucumbers, avocado and drizzled in a mildly spicy creamy sauce, it was love at first sight with this one. With the ingredients perfectly complementing one another. As quoted by one of the chefs we caught dashing by: “Japanese, but spicy enough to be appropriate for this part of the world”.

“Presented with the special menu, there was absolutely nothing on it that we weren’t ready to try!” Going for the 20-piece Sushi Platter was an experience of its own! Loaded with salmon nigiri and ebi sashimi, the raw fish was not only finely prepared but also presented and assorted in a beautiful manner, making the entire culinary journey delightful. The night was far from over and the surprises were still coming in – the platter also contained California Rolls and Shredded Crab Rolls that were authentic, expensive in taste, and delicious, all in all. Coming back for a second round of the Shredded Crab Rolls, this was hands-down one of our favourites from the entire menu. Drizzled in spicy homemade teriyaki sauce, the crispy fried crab and grilled unagi roll combination were not only delicious but also a sight for your eyes when appreciating the craftsmanship of the unique platter. Without a doubt, a must-try!

Another one of our favourites, that slightly took us by surprise, was the Tempura Soft-Shell Crab Roll. One of the chef ’s specialities, this grand dish comprised of just soft-shell crab, avocado and crispy rice cracker – at the end of the day, simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication, which is exactly what these rolls made us feel! All in all, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay never fails to deliver a good time, from whichever part of the hotel. Taste of Thailand After a morning in the spa, what could be a better ending to all that pampering than an al fresco lunch at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain’s Thai Lounge where great weather and great food are the order of the day?

rriving at the venue we’re greeted by smiling staff and a gentle breeze coming off the sparkling sea, which the lounge overlooks. We seek out a table in the sunshine and close to the grill, from which delicious aromas are wafting. Almost immediately we are served with Phra Ya Nang, a delightful, sweet and refreshing mocktail that combines blackberries, lemon juice, rosebud syrup, honey, and passion fruit and comes with a paper straw – eco brownie points. Chef Rerkden Paensurin has decided to showcase his talents with a selection of his favourite dishes and we’re all too happy to start with the seafood salad. There is hammour, cooked to a perfect firmness, big juicy prawns, mussels and more with a generous helping of greens, shredded carrots and tiny, hot red chillis. The dressing of sugar, lime, chilli and fish sauce is both spicy and sweet and serves well to lift a good dish to the level of memorable. Next up is Chicken Tom Ka, a favourite Thai staple done very, very well. Chunks of white meat float in the unmistakable broth of creamy coconut milk infused with ginger, galangal and lemongrass with a generous portion of mixed mushrooms and kefir lime leaves. The flesh is tender and the perfect combination of flavours is both sweet and salty – just as it should be. A surprise awaits as chef arrives with fried rice, served in a hollowedout pineapple. A feast for the eyes and a really fun IG pic, if you’re that way inclined. Loaded with baby corn, spring onions, red peppers, and small, sweet tomatoes, the addition of the onions adds 70

an extra layer of flavour. A topping of cranberries and flaked crab meat is, literally, the cherry on the cake taking an already flavourful combination to the next step. And alongside the rice comes what, for us, is the real star of the day – Lobster Pad Thai, with a difference. Rather than scrambled eggs, the noodles are encased in a wafer-thin egg dome, the lobster, its shell laden with chunks of battered meat, sitting proudly atop with crunchy chopped peanuts to the side. This dish is a meal in itself with plenty of crispy vegetables, including spring onions and red and yellow peppers, tucked throughout the noodles and the lobster cooked to perfection – tender white meat, almost crumbling on the tongue. We could say “more please” but the portion was definitely big enough for two and would make a satisfying sharing lunch even with no accompaniments. Lastly, among the savouries, we can’t resist the tempting aromas rising from the grill and choose to sample the lamb chops. They come with a generous serving of vegetables which we, by this stage, have no space for but admire, nonetheless. Tender and juicy, the chops do not disappoint with a lightly herbed crusting giving way to a succulent middle that melts in the mouth. Dessert is the famous Thai dish of sticky rice with mango and coconut ice cream. What can we say? If you want to finish your meal with a smile, this is it. The rice is so gooey, we initially have trouble splitting it between us, but the almost toffee-like taste and consistency is worth this little bit of ‘hard labour’. Our verdict, al fresco dining as you imagine it from all those holiday brochures we’re not using at the moment. Sun, sea breezes, great food and a special nod to the DJ for a super-chilled set that features one of my all-time faves.

We at OHLALA have always been huge fans of the brand and this month, thanks to the friendly and professional team at Al-Haddad Motors, we were given the opportunity to experience the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and, yet again, we were more than impressed. As soon as Mercedes-Benz’s new flagship vehicle came into view, we could see that the exterior design of the new S-Class is that of a classic sedan, one that boasts perfect proportions. At the front end, a bigger-than-ever,

high-status radiator grille draws the eye, complemented by front headlights that house a unique LED signature. With a short overhang, long wheelbase and a balanced rear overhang, the new S-Class looks as powerful as it does graceful. With 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and optional flush fitted doorhandles that pop out as you approach the car, the flanks are no less than stunning with a single crease running across the length of an otherwise smooth surface. The rear lights have intricate LED detailing with chrome accents, whilst real exhaust pipes are present in the dual exhaust setup. As we entered the vehicle we felt as if we were slipping into a first-class lounge. Firstly, the soft seats are extremely comfortable, supportive and situated higher than we expected, giving us a commanding view of the roads. The cabin seats can be adjusted in a multitude of ways, all via sensitive capacitors on the door. With no less than 19 individual motors used to adjust your seat, no matter your size or shape, you are sure to have one comfy ride. The steering wheel is beautifully designed, feels great in hand and is full of capacitor buttons, allowing the driver to have complete control over the functions and systems of the vehicle without taking their hands off the wheel. In the rear, the almost hidden controls on the doors operate the side and rear windows. The seats are multi-adjustable and very comfortable with massage functionality and microfibre headrests. As in the front, ambient lighting features on the doors glow red or blue depending on weather you are turning the temperature up or down. An Android tablet fitted in the central console

can be removed and used to surf the internet or watch movies. Built-in rear seat entertainment is present on both sides, as well as an optional fridge behind the centre consol. There are plenty of USB ports and cup holders throughout the car, as well as wireless charging options and even a set of wireless, noise cancelling headphones. Once out on the road, we got to play with the second generation MBUX learn-capable system. This system is more digital and intelligent than its predecessor, with brilliant displays on up to five large screens, in part with OLED technology. The 3D driver display allows for spatial view at the touch of a button for the very first time and a real three-dimensional effect is achieved without the need for 3D glasses. The head up display shows details such as current speed, the speed limit, road markings and more. It warns you when you are

straying out of your lane and, when you select augmented reality, actual arrows appear on the road in front of you, directing you where to turn. We have never experienced technology like this in any car we have test driven before. Performance wise, our model S-Class boasts an S 500 4Matic petrol engine that produces 2999cc with 320kW of power. It can surge from zero to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds and has a regulated top speed of 250km/h. It’s brilliant suspension system alone is enough to earn this car awards and combined with a fantastic braking system, responsive handling and technological assistance second to none, this is one classy and capable vehicle to drive. In truth an entire article could easily be written on each and every feature of this vehicle and you would still have to experience it for yourself to truly understand what this magical creation is capable of.
