It’s becoming quite clear that winter is in its last breath. I have been carrying jackets but barely wearing them and the chilly evening breeze is losing its power. This means it is time to welcome the spring and summer 2023 (SS2023) fashion trends with open arms in this part of the world. We bring a selection of the trendiest colours, cuts and styles to embrace in the upcoming months.

Our beauty spread has must-try products and a pampering session at Talise Spa at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa. We also bring a full report on Dessange’s new LPG treatment. The year is flying by – it’s time to press relax!

We had the opportunity to chat with Chef Tala Bashmi from Fusions by Tala about how Bahraini cuisine influences her creations and how she transforms traditional dishes into high-end dining experiences. Homes trends are a thing – even though they are not as popular and frequent as in fashion – we bring some of the latest ideas in interior design.

In our travel section, we had a wonderful staycation at Marassi Al Bahrain’s newest property, Address Beach Resort Bahrain. A perfect destination on the island to de-stress and enjoy great food with plenty of activities for the little ones. Türkiye suffered enormously with the recent natural disasters that hit the country, but we travelled to Istanbul to support this beloved country and stayed at the marvellous Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus. This month we celebrate International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, and there's nothing better than spending time with the fantastic women in our lives in an afternoon tea. The Ritz Gourmet Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has a great spread and mouth-watering pastries – we went there to check them out. And we end our magazine with a comprehensive driving report on BMW’s latest saloon edition, the 530i.

Happy March!

I SEE FLOWERS IN YOU

Blossom season starts this month and flower prints are the perfect pick! Celebrate spring with a wardrobe dedicated to botanical elements.

Oscar De La Renta went big on flowers this season. We love this look because it mixes different approaches to the motif – blouse, skirt and handbag welcoming spring in their own style, but with something in common.

Floor-length dresses in light-weight materials are perfect for the warm months ahead. CH Carolina Herrera has awe-inspiring numbers in impeccable cuts and textiles.

Looking for a smaller detail? These Tory Burch earrings with a flower design will add a delicate touch to your looks.

This kind of print may not be up everyone’s alley. If that’s your case, you can opt for an abstract pattern just like this Celine shirt.

Most of the time, sophistication lives in simplicity. Modest fashion is a way of wearing simple cuts and less skin-revealing clothes to align with an aesthetic that follows reasons of faith or personal preference. Luxury fashion house Jimmy Choo celebrates the 30th anniversary of the iconic manga Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon with a collection highlighting the brand’s principles of bold individuality, unique imagery and female empowerment. The pieces fuse the visions of two female creatives, Sandra Choi, Jimmy Choo’s Creative Director and Sailor Moon’s creator Naoko Takeuchi. “This collaboration underscores our shared values not just of female empowerment but for fashion’s ability to inspire inclusivity and individuality through personality and self-belief. The notion of transformation via fashion is central to Naoko Takeuchi, and clothes play a vital role in the identity of her superheroines, especially their shoes, the most powerful transformer you can step into,” said Sandra. The Jimmy Choo x Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon collection translates these qualities in a capsule of footwear and accessories themed around the key characters: Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Venus, their mentor cat Luna and, of course, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon herself.

Jewels of Joy

The French jewellery house Messika has designed a special capsule called MESSIKA CARE(S) to help women and children in Lebanon. For each piece purchased from this collection, the Valérie Messika Foundation, created in 2021, will donate 100 euros to the CARE NGO. The goal is to provide monthly basic hygiene kits to help young Lebanese and refugee girls. Valérie, the brand’s Creative Director, chose her iconic motif, the Move and its diamond-in-motion design to compose the creations. For this collection, they come in a smaller size. There are two bracelet designs, one in rose, yellow and white gold and another option with the same gold colours plus diamonds and a diamond cord necklace. The bracelets are available in two wrist sizes to be worn by both mothers and their children – the perfect gift to share, a symbol of attachment and family ties.

Walk the City

British brand Mallet London has partnered with London’s largest transport network, Transport for London (TfL), to create a limited-edition capsule footwear collection. The UK’s capital is home to the brand’s Co-founder and Creative Director, Tommy Mallet, and has already inspired many of the label’s collections. As any Londoner will tell you, the Tube is central to experiencing the city. The Tube map – as we know it today – was designed by Harry Beck and first appeared on the network in 1933. To help TfL celebrate the 160th anniversary of the opening of the Tube and the 90th year of this instantly recognisable design, Mallet has created a monochromatic take on this iconic map, stamping it in two stalwart Knox trainers. The black and white colour options feature the legendary schematic illustration of the network, the black in reflective silver, and the white coming in a tonal whiteout upper. Each pair comes with Mallet and TfL branded keychains, embossed collaborative heels and a lace shroud that doubles as a cardholder.

Pop Partnership

Sports brand adidas and IVY PARK, an athleisure clothing line owned, managed and operated by American singer Beyoncé, through her management company Parkwood Entertainment, have announced their latest collaborative collection called PARK TRAIL. The creations are inspired by the resilience of the outdoors, the spirit of the streets and the possibilities of the future. As with the previous adidas x IVY PARK offerings, this latest drop features distinctive looks with inclusive and gender-neutral sizing in fashion styles, performance gear, footwear and accessories. The versatile apparel looks re-visit classic outdoor styles and interpret them through elevated fabrics, powerful iconography, sequins and camouflage. PARK TRAIL’s footwear elevates well-known IVY PARK classics while adding distinct newness, capturing iconic styles from the adidas archives. Fully convertible backpacks, bags and hats are all crafted with utilitarian accents, including carabiners and fastenings that channel the great outdoors.

Brand Growth

The handbags, footwear and fragrance label BY FAR is expanding its range into eyewear. The first-ever sunglasses collection pays homage to Los Angeles, where the brand opened its first physical retail location on Melrose Place in May 2022. The well-known Italian eyewear manufacturer Marcolin is in charge of giving life to the pieces. “Marcolin’s expertise and capabilities in the development and manufacturing of eyewear are among the critical factors that led us to take this next significant step in the brand’s evolution. We were looking for a partner capable of translating our vision into an accessory that represents present-day style,” explains Sabina Gyosheva, CEO and Co-founder of BY FAR. The collection consists of four styles, all constructed out of acetate and metal, developed using cutting-edge production techniques and incorporating the finest craftsmanship. The sunglasses feature lightweight frames and fine detailing such as mirrored or contrasting coloured lenses, transparent temples and subtle variations of the BY FAR logo decorating the side arms.

THAT SUMMER FEELING

The past two years were marked with pandemicrelated disruptions and cancellations, but the Spring and Summer 2023 (SS2023) fashion shows had a relatively normal schedule apart from London, where there were some changes due to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In New York, Fendi celebrated the 25th anniversary of the brand’s iconic Baguette bag and we saw creations from Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger and Tom Ford. In Milan, there were surprise appearances at Versace, with Paris Hilton hitting the runway and Kate Moss walking for Bottega Veneta. The fashion month ended as usual in Paris with shows from traditional brands such as Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton. Summer is associated with the fire element (and for us living in the Middle East, this is an element we know all too well during the hottest season of the year!) and is associated with joy. Fire energy brings happiness and a warm feeling to our chests. With this in mind, we welcome the SS 2023 collections.

UNLOCKING ELEGANCE

The iconic blue box jewellery brand Tiffany & Co. expands its exquisite Tiffany Lock Collection.

40 www.ohlala-magazine.com
JEWELLERY Edit

New York-based luxury jeweller Tiffany & Co. has announced the global launch of additions to the Tiffany Lock Collection with a new campaign that features global ambassador, Rosé from BLACKPINK (Korean girl band).

Launched in the United States last year in September, the Tiffany Lock Collection was highlighted by the brand as being all-gender with an ethos of no rules, all welcome. Inspired by the power of togetherness and inclusivity.

Signalling a new expression of design and craftsmanship, the Lock Collection pays homage to the jeweller’s illustrious heritage while introducing the latest innovation to the bangle. The elegant swivelling mechanism echoes the functionality of a padlock, an important motif from the Tiffany archives. Expanding on the previous offering, the global launch brings a stylish new selection of rings, earrings and pendants in rose gold to the line, with multiple other colourways debuting later in the year.

The new campaign features K-pop superstar Rosé. The Tiffany & Co. house ambassador is styled in sparkling diamond Lock bangles that highlight the versatility of the designs and the powerful style statement made by each of them.

Rosé embodies the modern Tiffany & Co. woman and brings an energy aligned with the Tiffany Lock’s ethos. Rosé and the male talent featured in the new Lock campaign capture the inclusive spirit of Tiffany’s first all-gender jewellery collection.

Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and has since become an international luxury jeweller acclaimed for its elegance, innovative design, fine craftsmanship and creative excellence.

This month, OHLALA’s editor went for an interesting mechanical massage at Dessange Paris Bahrain – check it out!

44 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Don’t you love when technology finds its way into beauty treatments? I find it very exciting. This month I went to Dessange Paris Bahrain, to try their LPG therapy (a mechanical type of massage that promotes non-invasive treatment that works to contour and smoothen the skin and break down cellulite). I had undergone this treatment before, but now Dessange are the only beauty destination on the island to own the LPG Cellu M6 Alliance Medical, a newer version of the previous machine. I had to try it! I arrived at the reception and Ketut, my lovely therapist, was already waiting for me. She accompanied me to the changing room, giving me a catsuit to put on. All treatments with LPG require this special branded suit that covers the entire body. It is most definitely not very flattering as it shows every little imperfection, but this might be a good reference for the therapist to work on the concerning areas. After putting the very elastic suit on, I moved to the spa area where Ketut was waiting and after a small talk about the treatment, sips of water and a wet towel to clean my hands, we headed to the special LPG room. As usual, the bed was beautifully decorated with a small branch of orchids, a delicate detail. On the walls, I could see pictures of the treatment and the machine that looked more compact than the previous one. The new Cellu M6 Alliance offers a range of treatments that reshape, release, drain, improve, relieve, smooth and tone the body. It works by revitalising the heart of the cell and is 100% natural, painless and non-invasive. It’s highly recommended post-liposuction surgery to help reduce the pain and release the muscles. It is also indicated to treat athletes.

45 www.ohlala-magazine.com
BEAUTY Boutique

I have to confess that I was not so thrilled with this treatment as I remembered it was a bit uncomfortable last time. However, Ketut was emphatic in saying that this latest generation machine was not painful at all. I was not sure I could believe her, but she was absolutely right (of course) – there was no pain! It was actually pleasant.

The device comprises one motorised roller and a flat component (previously, there were two motorised rollers) and is packed with a new Alliance Skin Identity sensor which adapts necessary settings to each client’s skin needs. Before we started our session, Ketut asked me which areas I would like to focus on. Like most women, my fat deposits are in the bottom, thighs and abdomen area. She then added the information into the machine and a 40-minute massage plan appeared on the screen. The movements followed what the Cellu M6 Alliance pre-determined and which areas to concentrate on. As stated previously, I felt no pain. Not only do the directions vary, but also the intensity of the ‘sucking’ system. It does feel like the machine is gently pulling the skin while rolling.

Ketut informed me that for best results, I should do 12 sessions, one every two weeks, and combine this with exercise and a healthy diet. I know this is a basic recommendation. However, when it comes to LPG, it is highly recommended because the massage breaks the fat cells and the exercise helps you eliminate them. Ketut said that the ideal would be to have a massage and then exercise. While lipo-massages can work even if

46 www.ohlala-magazine.com

you don’t do anything, you see faster and better results if you lead an active lifestyle. Good thing that the Dessange Health Club is just a few steps above the spa.

After finishing my body therapy, Ketut shifted to my face. Yes, the LPG treatment can also be used on the visage to rejuvenate the skin by stimulating dormant cellular activity. This therapy smooths facial expression lines, lifts cheeks, fights sagging skin, wrinkles and much more. It boosts collagen and hyaluronic acid, resulting in a firmed and revitalised complexion. The suction device is in a smaller format but has the same concept and follows specific movements according to the desired result. If the body massage was pleasant, the facial one was pure delight. I don’t know if it’s because it activates areas that a regular facial massage does not touch, but it was really relaxing. Ketut finalised it with a moisturiser. I then went back to the changing room, but before I slipped into my work clothes again, I checked my bottom area at Dessange’s big mirror and saw that even with one session, my skin felt smoother and my facial complexion looked tighter. Certainly a result a girl likes to see.

As I was not ready yet to say goodbye to Dessange and the weather was beautiful, I decided to go to the café to enjoy a green juice and my ginger tea (a Dessange signature tea offered after every spa treatment that I absolutely love!). After I finished my drinks, it was time to go home. I am most definitely looking forward to my next visit! With Mother’s Day happening this month, I know exactly what to ask as a gift.

AN OUT OF THIS WORLD EXPERIENCE

There’s been a lot of buzz about the new Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa. Liz O’Reilly got the chance to check out that very spa to see what all the fuss is about.

48 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Heading through the capacious lobby of the hotel, I notice how busy it is, especially for a weekday afternoon. A film crew is shooting footage, glamorous ladies float between tables and sportspeople are out in force.

On the lower floor, which houses the Talise Spa, offering both men’s and women’s sections, Spa Manager Susi welcomes me with a beaming smile and walks me through explaining that there will soon be a hair and beauty salon but for now I am more than happy to spot the 26m indoor pool – Hockneyesque in its sparkling blue oblong perfection with streams of water flowing over metallic tubes. There are steam and sauna rooms at the side plus an experience shower, I make a note of that for next time!

Passing through to, what seems to me, a massive gym – Susi explains that this is just the ladies’ section, the mixed gym is even bigger – I spot just about every piece of Technogym equipment you could wish for from running and rowing machines to weights and elliptical trainers. The mixed facility also has a cycle room and classes.

The spa décor of creams and golds with thoughtful artworks and carved screens is truly relaxing, giving the sense of a restful haven where good things surely happen.

The products used are mostly from local organic brand Green Bar and Biologique Recherche – a world-famous French skincare house whose treatments are based on highly personalised methods. However, today, for my Hammam scrub and massage, my therapist Iin will be using gorgeous oils and scrubs from SENSASIA.

49 www.ohlala-magazine.com
SPA Spotlight

After our mini-tour, I am shown into the Hammam and I can honestly say it literally takes my breath away. A huge circular marble Hammam slab, which must be at least five metres across, sits in the middle of a dimly lit room. Water troughs are strategically fitted around the sides and shower nozzles in a dull, burnished gold add luxury while the whole appearance is almost altar-like. It’s where I imagine the good lady Arwen from Lord Of The Rings or maybe some medieval Nordic queen, would bathe alongside her ladies in waiting. I even find myself speaking in a hushed reverent tone!

The other-worldly ambience is only made more pointed by the feeling of heat – the marble slab, surrounding benches and even the floor radiate warmth. But it’s not oppressive, just all enveloping and strangely comforting. This Hammam area is for one or max two people, so I quickly head through to the personal changing area where my locker offers up a deliciously fluffy robe and rubber slippers – Hammans get notoriously wet and slippery, so safety rather than aesthetics is the consideration here.

Then Iin shows me into the steam room where the 53 degrees Celsius heat, once again, leaves me breathless. Always conscious of my well-being, she leaves the door open while I acclimatise then I settle face down on a bench and prepare to cook!

Iin returns to lather me in black olive soap – the heat and perspiration opening my pores and allowing the precious black preparation to be better absorbed and do its work of deep cleansing my skin.

I’m rinsed down before heading out to the Hammam where Iin has placed a cloth and a small pillow for me to lie on and I now fully appreciate the all-encompassing heat as Iin begins to loofah me from head to toe, sloughing off dead skin and paying particular attention to my many dry patches.

I’m then rinsed again with abundant warm water before being washed down with SENSASIA soap containing red algae and chamomile to remove the dead skin, cleanse and soften.

Iin applies a cool towel to my eyes before shampooing my hair with a deliciously scented concoction containing lavender, more red algae and almonds and conditioning with ylang ylang and rice oil.

Next, my very sensitive facial skin is gently smothered in a cleanser containing papaya extract and almond to clean and soften and this is removed with another cool towel.

Rising from the Hammam slab, I can honestly say I have not felt so clean and totally relaxed in as long as I can remember and I am eager for what comes next.

50 www.ohlala-magazine.com SPA Spotlight

And what comes next is an absolute treat. The massage is called In Your Element, which guests can personalise to their own preference.

For me, Iin has chosen three types of oil: lemongrass and mandarin to relieve muscle tension and energise; lavender and mandarin relaxation oil to calm and reduce anxiety; and Seaside Citrus, a blend of grapefruit, rosemary and lavender to refresh and rehydrate the skin – perfect after all that sweating! Iin uses gentle pressure working one side at a time from my shoulders to my feet and applying a subtle extra strength to my areas of particular concern – my neck and lower back. Now, I must confess that, while I love massage, I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to strong pressure. I also have an old back injury that does not take kindly to being overly stimulated. But Iin is clearly a master (or mistress) of her craft and I actually really enjoy the extra pressure on my sacral area as, without overdoing it, she eases my tightened muscles restoring a greater range of movement almost, it seems, without trying – the sign of true skill.

So relaxed am I under her expert touch that I actually doze off! All too soon, it is time to wake up and change back into my street clothes but not before heading to the relaxation room – more shades of soothing cream with golden bead curtaining – for a delicious lemongrass and ginger tea accompanied by almonds and fat, juicy dates.

I can honestly say, I have not enjoyed an afternoon this much in a long time. Just writing about it a week later has brought a huge smile to my face and it’s made all the better by the fact that my skin, after all that sloughing and scrubbing, still feels amazing. What more could a girl ask?

Colour blocking in tangerine, army green and canary yellow are blended with neutral tones. Bold printed pieces are the highlight, painting the brand’s essential shirtdress and an oversized kaftan-style dress in silk twill with a geometric pattern featuring Carolina’s 2020 initials and contrasting striped trims – perfect for the sunset hour. While the weather is not so warm, A-line short jackets in wool and linen-blend twill and a merino wool oversized sweater are great to pair with a midi-skirt for a woman on the go. Fit-andflare business wear styles with refined looks in monochrome white and black and an oversized black cape with a striking white Insignia motif complement this versatile collection. When it comes to accessories, the Blasón bag, handcrafted in Mocán leather, stars in the collection. This iconic bag can be worn over the shoulder or carried by hand and will elevate any look. A versatile Ficus suede Poncho bag with Carolina’s initials and the miniature Doma Insignia bags in pops of colour are stylish items to accessorise a look that transitions from day to night. @carolinaherrera

FOOD THAT TOUCHES THE HEART

Tala Bashmi is the driving force behind Fusions by Tala at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa. We spoke to her about representing Bahrain on the global culinary scene.

62 www.ohlala-magazine.com OHLALA Voices

OHLALA – What is your first memory of food that was beyond just enjoying it or disliking it but had a deeper meaning of understanding it? How old were you when you realised you wanted to follow this career path?

Tala Bashmi – I was 17 when I realised I wanted to follow this career path. However, I didn’t completely commit until I was 23/24 years old. My memories of food are linked with comfort. I realised at a young age that food is enjoyed and shared over all different occasions, whether happy or sad. It’s something that bonds and binds people from all walks of life together.

OHLALA – You’ve trained at Cesar Ritz Colleges in Switzerland and were exposed to a variety of international cuisines. How important is it to you to create dishes that reflect your Middle Eastern culture? How do your roots influence your cooking style?

Tala Bashmi – It is very important for me to represent a region that I see as under-represented on a global scale, especially in terms of fine dining or elevated cuisine. I think we come from a rich culture and heritage in terms of food, ingredients and spices, so sharing that with the world is beautiful. I grew up eating dishes from many cuisines and what is important to me is to cook with Nafs (an Arabic word that means with your own touch) or with your soul, as we would say in English, and make it taste good first and foremost. I cook food I like to eat and enjoy eating myself and I try to share that with my guests.

OHLALA – You mentioned that you are on the path of developing a Middle Eastern food renaissance. What do you mean by that? What exactly do you intend to achieve?

Tala Bashmi – Our cuisine has always been viewed as comfort food and perfect for sharing. What I try to do is to revisit dishes I’ve grown up with and add my trained touch in terms of technique and style while maintaining their true essence. I aim to share my story, our flavours and ingredients in an open exchange of culture and cuisine with the world.

OHLALA – Food can bring back childhood memories and a profound feeling of comfort. What is the dish that takes you to a happy place? Do you offer it in your restaurant?

Tala Bashmi – There’s a dish called Chebba that we would get from

my grandmother every Friday – a prawn dumpling cooked in a tamarind sauce. It’s unique and distinctly Bahraini, one of those dishes that transports me to memories of my grandmother from the moment it hits my tongue. This dish is currently part of my eight-course tasting menu, where I guide my guests through my culinary experience.

OHLALA – Food also has the power to create new experiences and memories. How do you balance elements of innovation and tradition in your creations? How do you innovate without losing sight of your roots? Is there a formula that you follow or is it pure instinct?

Tala Bashmi – There are several formulas. Some dishes I keep very true to their core and change very little, like my Chebba dish. While in others, I try to completely reinterpret, study the origins and see how I can reshape that dish while preserving its soul and flavour.

OHLALA – How important are the ingredients in your creations? What spices would you carry to a desert island?

Tala Bashmi – Ingredients are key to what I do at the restaurant. I make frequent visits to the farmers’ market to ensure I utilise the best seasonal ingredients this island has to offer. And to a desert island, I would take salt, coriander seed, bay leaves and black limes.

OHLALA – You have been recognised in the region with the Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards. In Bahrain, you have proved yourself with Fusions by Tala, a reference in high-end cuisine. What else do you want to conquer?

Tala Bashmi – It would be beautiful if we were able to take Fusions by Tala to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list (which is actually composed of 100 restaurants), to showcase what we do among some of the most mentally nourishing restaurants that exist right now on a world platform.

OHLALA – As a Bahraini, what do you like most about the kingdom?

Tala Bashmi – The generosity and kindness of the people in Bahrain are unmatched. I think it is one of the island’s greatest characteristics, along with our rich culture, heritage and history.

GO BOLD AND GO HOME!

Interior design embraces trends, not with new collections every season (as happens with fashion), but a few new concepts become more popular every year. We bring some of the 2023 trends worth exploring to revamp your home – we anticipate that maximalists will be pleased!

64 www.ohlala-magazine.com
CHATTELS & MORE

OHLALA Homes

BULKY MARBLE

Marble tops are usually used as thin pale surfaces, but things are changing and now we see statement, chunky marble pieces conquering the hearts of many. The altered approach to this material creates a bolder effect. You can have a broad marble vanity top to hold your washbasin or thick kitchen countertops and tables. However, not only has the width become a highlight, but this statement element is also coming in different colours, with lots of veining and patterns imparting a retro feel. The trendy shades and types are funky marbles in Irish green, red Rosso and Levanto marble, red Travertine, Calacatta Viola and many deep black hues. Your countertops will become the eye-catching element of your bathroom and kitchen.

COLOUR OF THE YEAR

Pantone is an international authority on colours, and they select a hue to reign every year. For 2023, Viva Magenta (a mix between red and violet) is the chosen one. The bold hue and its variations have been an inspiration to many designers and you will spot it in many areas, such as fashion, beauty and, of course, interior design. It has a chameleon effect when white, grey or black additions are used for tint, tone and shade differences. From Viva Magenta, you obtain Terra Rosa, rusty pink, brownish tones and a magnificent palette of warm colours. You can paint a wall in this shade or add accessory elements to your rooms.

LOOK UP

It is common to see one wall painted in a different (usually vivid) shade as a focal point in a room, but the trend now is to paint the ceiling – just the ceiling! You can still paint the whole space if you want a dramatic effect, but adding colour to the highest wall in a room is more intentional and allows your eyes to flow into the whole area and notice more details. If you choose a dark shade, it will give the sensation that the ceiling is higher than it actually is.

WELCOME NATURE

Biophilic design is a concept that aims to increase connectivity with the natural environment through the use of direct or indirect elements of nature. The trend incorporates sinuous shapes inspired by organic items and invests in open areas to welcome the outside in. Not only do furniture and spaces attract a connection with mother nature , but also materials such as cotton, wood, terracotta, marble, ratan, ceramic, linen and raw texturised surfaces are used to compose interior design perceptions. Another way to bring nature indoors is to add plants in clay vases, hanging greenery and vertical gardens to your décor. Plastic and industrial products are banned!

UNIQUE SLABS

Handmade ceramic tiles are attracting a lot of praise, mainly the precious ones made by tile artisans (yes, they still exist), where all the steps from mould to firing and glazing come to life by a slow artisanal process, and no tile is exactly the same as the other. It celebrates the quintessential beauty of imperfection. The only downside to them is that they are undoubtedly costly. However, if you still want the artisanal look, you can go for the industrial ones that carry a rustic finish. Why should you use them?

To obtain a tridimensional effect and add organic texture. Venture to treat a wall or the hall floor area with handmade tiles – they will become the undiscussed protagonist of the space.

MOODY ROOMS

As the name suggests, these interiors invest in a dramatic atmosphere and use a dark-hued colour palette, but not specifically black. This style mostly uses sombre shades of greys, greens, reds and blues. The biggest fear of going for this style on the walls (and ceiling) is that it will make the space look smaller, but that’s not entirely true. Deep colours help blur the lines between the walls, making the room seem bigger because you can’t really identify where a wall begins or ends. Why go dark? The area becomes classy without much effort and there’s a distict touch of wow! It adds drama and elegance while giving character to your space and a mysterious vibe that you don’t get with lighter palettes. It also provides a sense of intimacy and a relaxing feeling (lighter tones are full of energy). It helps create that cosy vibe we all look for in our homes.

A JOYFUL

FAMILY ESCAPE

The weather is getting warmer and there is no better time to explore one of the newest resorts on the island. Fernanda Langhammer spent a lovely time at the family-friendly Address Beach Resort Bahrain.

Escapes

What is the best thing to do in Bahrain with kids? In my opinion, it is to go for a staycation! My son recently had a school break and we headed to the latest sensation in town, Address Beach Resort Bahrain located at Marassi Al Bahrain. I’d heard a lot of buzz around this new property and we had to check it out.

I live on the other side of the island, so driving there was like a short road trip. The day was sunny, the music was good and the traffic was light. When we arrived, we were greeted with a special welcome drink and my son was gifted a personalised colouring book and pencils while Bidisha was checking us in. The reception area is bright and beautifully decorated in tones of beige and blue. On the ceiling, a collection of leaf-shaped glass chandeliers looked like an art installation – simply stunning. In no time, we got our room key, a cute wooden card, and lovely Febronia accompanied us to the sixth floor. The room was absolutely fantastic! It was composed of a spacious bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, a guest bathroom and a massive living room with a round table and comfortable sofa and chairs, everything tastefully decorated.

Before heading to the balcony to soak in the uninterrupted view of the crystalline Gulf waters, my son spotted a teepee tent and went straight inside. What an awesome touch! While he was exploring his ‘new home’, I noticed a card welcoming us to the resort, signed by the Address’ General Manager, Ricardo Vale – chocolates, macarons and a fruit basket accompanied the message. So much care and attention, the perfect start to our mini-holiday. The space also had a modern minibar and a Nespresso machine. The drawers were filled with snacks, cups, mugs and all the necessary amenities. For those who love organised spaces, each item fit perfectly in tailor-made compartments – I loved that.

70 www.ohlala-magazine.com LOCAL

We finally reached the balcony and the view was breathtaking. In front of us was the vast sea; on the side, we could see an amazing pool and the rest of Marassi beach. We wanted to enjoy the view, so we sat on the balcony’s comfy chairs, sharing our amazement at the place and how lucky we were to be there.

We started to feel hungry, so we changed into our swimsuits and went down to grab a quick lunch at The Restaurant (surprisingly enough, that’s the name of the eatery) – they also have The Garden and The Lounge. The space was ample and gorgeous. We chose a table near the big windows to have a peek at the ocean while munching our food. The beige cushioned chairs and sofas had green detailing that matched the massive cream, blue and green carpet. There were big white vases with planted trees all over the place and the ultimate detail: lots of small glass pieces hanging from the ceiling, similar to the ones at the reception but on a smaller scale, adding extra oomph to the room.

As we were not very hungry, we opted for the artichoke and avocado salad with cherry tomatoes and parmesan. The artichoke was grilled and balanced with crispy green leaves and soft avocado. It was the first time my son had tried artichoke and he absolutely loved it. We also ordered some vegetable dim sum. The parcels were very light but full of flavour. We decided we had had enough of staring at the sea and it was time to enjoy the beach.

Before reaching the sand, there is a hut where you can get towels and they have a big pot of Sum Bum sunscreen SPF 50, in case you’ve forgotten yours, plus tissues, hand sanitiser and Evian Facial Spray. Satish, one of the staff members in charge of the beach area that day, asked if we wanted some beach toys and my son couldn’t have been happier, a bag with buckets, shovels and rakes – we were all set to build our incredible sand castle. The seawater was a bit chilly, so we went for a walk and discovered three big swings by the beach. They were so much fun! We spent a long time playing on them before deciding to go to the pool. The wind had decided to blow stronger, so diving in the temperature-controlled water was like entering a warm bath on a chilly day.

LOCAL Escapes

Sunset colours started painting the sky; we then moved to our room to clean up. My son soaked in the bathtub for almost an hour while I chose the shower. It had two options, a fixed sprinkler on the ceiling or a moveable nozzle on the wall – I opted for the first. A well-stocked selection of Italian brand Lorenzo Villoresi Firenze toiletries was at our disposal. In our best outfits, we chose a different table at The Restaurant. We opted for a booth-like style for more privacy. The place had different lighting from the day; it was more intimate, giving us a cosy feeling. Smiley Tshering came to take our order. We started with the Falafel Beet Vegan Bowl with roasted carrot, pearl couscous, kale, pumpkin seeds and tahini dressing. The falafel was marvellous; it had the perfect crunch outside and was warm and soft inside. My son went for the Margarita Pizza, which was regular-sized and he ate almost the entire circle; that says more than words about how perfectly thin the dough was with plenty of cheese. I went for the Pappardelle Alla Norma with roasted aubergine, tomato sauce and ricotta, a divine dish with the right balance of sauce and pappardelle. It seemed simple, yet it was full of complex flavours and different textures for a comforting bite. Joy, one of the restaurant managers, tempted me to try the house’s signature pina colada, so I had to go for it. To my surprise, it was transparent with a refreshing taste and an artsy look. It was time to rest and my son couldn’t stop talking about how soft the bed was until he fell asleep a few seconds later. We woke up, and the first thing we did was open the curtains. The morning sunlight hitting the ocean was all the sign we needed to head down for breakfast. We both had avocado toast, poached eggs and a plate of seasonal fruits. The bread basket came with freshly baked pastries and I didn’t resist. The croissant was flaky and light, just delicious!

72 www.ohlala-magazine.com

It was time for my spa treatment. We went to QIX Club, the resort’s kids’ club, so my companion in this staycation could play while I was getting pampered. The space is full of toys, books and even a video game. Monitored activities run from time to time and my son was excited to participate in the outdoor scavenger hunt. I left him with the lovely YangChen, knowing he would have loads of fun.

The Spa at Address is a calming space to leave all your tensions behind. I went for the Cellular Recreation Facial, a natural therapy tailored to each guest’s skin needs. It uses active ingredients and organic products from the Team Dr Joseph brand. Karma, my therapist, started the session with the foot ritual, where my feet were washed in a copper bowl with salt and ginger scrub. We then moved to the bed, which had a very soft towel and I simply forgot about the world outside. She started by cleansing my face, applying toner and giving me a pressure point massage. She then turned on the steamer, used a gentle scrub afterwards and after cleaning my face, it was time for serum and a comprehensive lifting massage. She then applied a mask and left it acting for a while. After removing it, it was time for the moisturising, eye and lip cream. I spent a few minutes sipping a soothing peppermint tea in the relaxation room. When I was ready to leave, I picked up my son from the kids’ club, where he indeed had a blast. It was time to return to reality, so we packed our things, made some thank you notes and headed downstairs. We had a wonderful time and are looking forward to going back with the rest of the family. Address Beach Resort Bahrain will certainly see more of us in the near future!

TRAVEL Escapes

There are many magical places around the globe that travellers long to visit. However, there are a few that stand out in people’s minds due to the abundance of history, culture, architecture, beautiful weather and amazing cuisine they offer. Istanbul, in Türkiye, is one of these places. This beautiful and colourful metropolis is the only city that straddles both Europe and the Middle East, making it simultaneously a European and Asian city. We were invited to experience this bucket-list destination for four spectacular days and three unforgettable nights by the five-star hotel Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus.

Our Arrival

As soon as we disembarked our flight, we were greeted by a hotel delegate and whisked away to our five-star accommodation. On route, we caught a sneak peek of the splendour awaiting us in Istanbul. This breathtaking location, with its grand architecture, an assortment of mosques, vibrant colours and rich history, was enough to keep our eyes wide open in sheer awe at all the splendour to be discovered.

“The panoramic views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait that welcomed us on the rooftop enhanced the feeling of wonder that accompanies the experience of an exotic new location.”

The Rooms

Arriving at Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, courteous and professional staff were on hand to welcome us and attend to our every need. We were soon booked in and heading to our respective suites. We all agreed it had to be one of the friendliest and most efficient airport-to-hotel-room experiences we’ve ever had.

All 553 guest accommodations, including suites, are of exceptional standard – we had the pleasure of inspecting numerous types, including rooms and a variety of luxury suites.

I was booked into the beautiful King Deluxe Room and couldn’t have been more pleased with my corner of the hotel. This stylish and modern space offers all the amenities you could need for a comfortable and pampered stay. With its king-sized bed, soundproof windows, free wi-fi, Nespresso machine, 40-inch LCD TV and a Turkish-style bathroom complete with rain shower, I couldn’t have felt more content.

The Cuisine

The Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus ensured we were delighted in all aspects, especially when it came to meal times.

The Summit Bar & Terrace

On the first evening, we were invited to attend a meal at the Summit Bar and Terrace, located all the way up on the 14th floor. The panoramic views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait that welcomed us on the rooftop enhanced the feeling of wonder that accompanies the experience of an exotic new location.

Our first culinary experience at the hotel was memorable as we were spoilt with scrumptious dishes from around the world. The Japanese options at this venue were exquisite and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, along with the bird’s eye view of the city.

Manzara

On our second evening, we were once again treated like royalty, this time with an invite to the brand-new Manzara restaurant. Once more, we were gifted with breathtaking views of Istanbul, including its historical peninsula. At this fine-dining restaurant, we witnessed exceptional chefs preparing dishes in an open kitchen. Boasting a delicious menu of culinary masterpieces from various Mediterranean cultures, it wasn’t easy to choose from the large assortment of dishes on the mouth-watering menu. Ultimately, it didn’t matter what we selected, as all the food was prepared to perfection and we had a truly enjoyable evening filled with feasting and laughter.

Monet Lobby Lounge & Patisserie

Throughout our stay, we had access to the Monet Lobby Lounge, a delightful venue offering a peaceful and quiet environment, along with an assortment of traditional Turkish coffees, teas, cakes, cookies and a wide selection of chocolate. Over our four days, we took advantage of this special space, where we could have some relaxing time, chat about our trip plans and enjoy the incredible art adorning the walls.

AFTERNOON TEA DELIGHT

Embarking on a journey of indulgence, Apple Sharma headed to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, to taste its renowned afternoon tea and take a chance to chat with the new pastry chef.

80 www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHIC Eats

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, so if you are looking for a special way to spoil your mum, look no further than the legendary afternoon tea at the Ritz Gourmet Lounge. Offering a touch of elegance and sophistication, it’s the perfect treat to celebrate the occasion.

Quintessentially British, an afternoon tea experience involves enjoying a variety of mini fares in the form of delicate sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, but on occasions I do crave something decadent and chocolatey. So, when my colleague and I received an invite to try the afternoon tea at the Ritz Gourmet Lounge, I ignored my rule of ‘sugar-free weekdays’ and gave in to my cravings.

The Ritz Gourmet Lounge is as inviting as its afternoon tea menu. Inspired by the Belle Epoque period in French history, the décor and ambience are reminiscent of a chic Parisian salon de thé, complete with luxurious Napoleon chairs and sofas featuring floral upholstery. As we took our place in a cosy corner of the lounge, the first thing I noticed was the elegant table settings, immaculately arranged with fine china crockery featuring pretty floral motifs.

A feast for the eyes and senses, our afternoon tea comprised a threetiered platter, offering an array of savoury and sweet delights. Let’s start with the bottom tier. The spinach quiche was a standout, with a buttery crust and perfectly seasoned filling. The croque monsieur, a classic French sandwich, was given a gourmet touch with its layers of ham, cheese and béchamel sauce. The mushroom and cheese mini croissant was flaky and buttery, while the falafel wrap was a refreshing departure from the Frenchinspired items, with its perfect blend of spices.

81 www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHIC Eats

Moving on to the middle tier, the sandwiches were simple but wellexecuted. The tuna and mayonnaise sandwich was light and fresh, while the chicken and mayonnaise was hearty and satisfying. And, of course, the classic egg and mayonnaise sandwich did not disappoint.

Gearing up my taste buds for the pièce de resistance, the top tier of the platter offered a selection of colourful, sweet petit fours. These mouthwatering morsels of mini gateaux were devoured within minutes and hit the sweet spot perfectly.

No afternoon tea is complete without scones, which were simply divine. We had three different varieties to choose from – classic plain, raisin and date. Served warm with a side of clotted cream and jam, they made a perfect pairing with a cup of tea.

Just as we were feeling scrumptiously satisfied, we were introduced to the man behind these delicious fares, Executive Pastry Chef Devopriyo Gupta, who surprised us with a fantastic lineup of his specialities. First up was the raspberry and white chocolate pastry. The sweetness of the white chocolate perfectly complemented the tartness of the raspberries, making for a heavenly combination. Next was the macaron ispahan – an exceptional delicacy. This delicate pastry featured light and airy macaron shells filled with a luscious rose, raspberry and lychee filling. For pistachio lovers, the pistachio ganache and pralines pastry is a musttry. The rich and nutty flavours of the green nut are expertly balanced, making for a truly indulgent treat.

Moving on to the white chocolate and blueberry pastry, this sweet and tangy dessert was bursting with flavour, with a classic white chocolate and blueberry pairing that never fails to satisfy.

The honey cake was a true showstopper, with its 10 layers of sponge cake and dulce de leche cream. Expertly executed, each layer of sponge was perfectly moist and the cream added a rich and decadent flavour.

82 www.ohlala-magazine.com

For those with dietary restrictions, the pecan caramel bar is a glutenfree option that does not compromise on taste. The Jivara milk chocolate mousse with sponge and caramel layer was expertly crafted, with the pecan adding a delicious nutty crunch.

The mandarin square is another fruity delight, with its orange confit and whipped ganache filling. The full citrus flavour of the orange makes for a refreshing and light pastry option.

Last but certainly not least, the chocolate hazelnut bar was a true work of art. This eggless pastry featured an almond sponge and crispy feuilletine mixed with milk chocolate, all topped with a chocolate crèmant, milk chocolate chantilly, caramelised hazelnut and 22-carat gold leaf. A truly decadent treat.

Chef Devopriyo surpassed all our expectations with this enormous selection of delicacies. With a keen eye for detail and a love for chocolate, he speaks passionately about his creativity and love for pastries. Taking inspiration from local spices, Chef Devopriyo has created some unusual desserts in the past, including zaatar, black lime, as well as saffron and date ice creams. “I love the flavours of these three ice creams and sometimes I make dark chocolate mousse with zaatar, which go very well together,” he says. He takes globally classical dishes, infuses them with local ingredients for a Bahraini touch, and uses the word ‘glocal’ to describe them. Talking about his personal favourite, the chocolate hazelnut pastry, he adds: “I love hazelnut, personally. Firstly, it’s eggless and I’m a hardcore chocolate lover.”

Overall, the afternoon tea concept at the Ritz Gourmet Lounge is nothing short of exquisite. The attention to detail in both the presentation and execution of the food is impressive, and the elegant ambience of the lounge only adds to the experience. These are no ordinary pastries, but rather, decadent treats that will leave you wanting more. We highly recommend it for a chic eat or an elegant Mother’s Day treat.

THE NEW BMW 53I XDRIVE SALOON

OHLALA SPENT THE DAY IN THE BMW 530I XDRIVE. A HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER VEHICLE IN THE MIDSIZED LUXURY SALOON SEGMENT, AND FOR GOOD REASON.

88 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Having test driven almost a dozen different BMW models over the years, OHLALA is yet to experience a creation from this German car manufacturing giant that does not meet our approval.

This month, thanks to the exceptional team at Euro Motors, we were given the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the latest-generation BMW 530i xDrive Saloon.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The 530i showcases an exquisite sporting style, highlighted by its bold lines and clean surfaces. At the front end, the uniquely shaped kidney grille, framed by a single-piece surround, is wider and taller than its predecessor. This centrepiece drops down into the front apron, emphasising the length of the shapely hood.

The front end also features full-LED headlights, complemented by the two U-shaped daytime driving light sources, situated alongside one another, forming a contemporary-looking light graphic.

At the sculptured flanks sit 20-inch light-alloy wheels, underscoring the athletic stance of the new 530i. At the back end, the tail lights add an additional visual impact with their L-shaped graphic and black edging. We found it very interesting how both the rear and brake lights have

been expertly integrated into a shared light fixture with a predominantly three-dimensional external lens. Further adding to the sporty nature of the vehicle are the stylish, free-form trapezoidal tailpipe finishers.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Slipping into the electronically adjustable front seats of the 530i, we were greeted by an interior that effortlessly combines modern elegance with a driver-focussed cockpit design. This captivating combination not only provides the perfect environment for comfortable long-distance travel but the setup for sheer driving pleasure.

Wherever our eyes settled in the new 5-Series cabin, they were met with precise craft and high-quality materials. In our test model, the black surfaces of the instrument panel were trimmed in the optional Sensatec, enriched by contrast stitching in a classy shade of brown. Additionally, the buttons located on the centre console were surfaced in high-gloss black. A generous feeling of space is evident throughout the 530i, with plenty of leg, shoulder and headroom available for up to five occupants. Further adding to the practical nature of the vehicle is the 530-litre luggage compartment, with its hands-free opening and closing tailgate. Its capacity can be greatly increased with the 40:20:40 split rear seats folded flat. This is achievable through the mere touch of a button located in the boot.

INFOTAINMENT & CONNECTIVITY

The infotainment system of the new 530i features a standard 10.25-inch Control Display, designer controls on the centre console and conveniently arranged multifunction buttons on the sports steering wheel. We found this practical system to be of exceptionally high quality and responsive to commands.

The latest-generation 530i contains the BMW Operating System 7 that incorporates both the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus, along with the optional Live Cockpit Professional. These features, along with an array of additional digital services, assist the driver in multiple ways. We were once again impressed by the cloud-based BMW Maps. It calculates routes and arrival times almost instantly and provides real-time traffic data, at short intervals, amongst other handy features.

The 530i also provides full smartphone connectivity, Google Assistant, Bluetooth/wi-fi interfaces, a head-up display, a multimedia system, BMW Intelligent Personal Assist, along with Remote Software Upgrades.

SAFETY & ASSISTANCE

Alongside the multiple standard airbags fitted throughout the vehicle, BMW have included various driver assistance systems in their saloon. These include cruise control with brake function and the Attentiveness Assistant. The optional Driving Assistant is a camera- and radar-based driver assistance system that offers additional features. These include lane departure warning, lane changing warning with blind spot detection, front collision warning with brake intervention, rear crossing traffic warning and rear collision warning.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

Our test model 530i xDrive Saloon was powered by a four-cylinder, inline petrol engine featuring mild hybrid technology and coupled with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. This setup produces a capacity of 1,998cc, an output of 252hp and a max torque of 250Nm. All this power enables the 530i xDrive to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.3 seconds and to attain an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. We were excited by the way the BMW xDrive system maximises traction and handling stability. Furthermore, the effective braking system always managed to tame the abundance of power on offer, adding to the sense of ultimate control this remarkable car provides.

OUR VERDICT

Featuring beautiful interior and exterior designs, responsive driving performance and plenty of both comfort and assistance, you simply can’t go wrong with this four-door luxury saloon.

The Time Is Now

Miss Ohlala reflects on the principle of change.

The first day of spring is marked by the spring equinox, which this year falls on March 20 for Northern Hemisphere countries. The equinox is when the sun crosses the plane of the equator towards the relevant hemisphere (North in this case), making day and night of equal length. After this astronomical event, this part of the globe begins to tilt more towards the sun, resulting in an increasing number of daylight hours, with early dawns and later sunsets. The season symbolises new beginnings, a new chapter and the opportunity of changing things. It’s when animals, plants and flowers come out of hibernation. It is also a well-known period for spring cleaning, which means deep cleansing, tidying up a place (especially homes), and getting rid of things you don’t use or don’t really need. According to Chinese beliefs, it is a chance to clear away not only physical clutter but also a cleansing of the mind, to let go of regrets and mistakes. This year, Ramadan starts on March 21 or 22, coinciding with this period of transformation –meaning there is no better time to connect with yourself and others. A moment to stop and reflect on your everyday actions. Maybe it is a good time to start volunteering in an elderly home or orphanage, reading for them or engaging with charity initiatives and making it a regular occurrence to bring more meaning into your life. Or change small things such as eating more vegetables or trying a new food before saying you don’t like it or even just stop complaining – now is definitely the best time!
