A

Editor’s Letter

sk any bride-to-be about planning a wedding and she’ll tell you it’s taking over her life. The administration behind getting this massive party organised requires examining options at least 27 times to find the ‘right’ one – welcome to our wedding issue, perfect timing as bridezilla season is upon us! But believe me, I want you to forgo the typical nightmare scenarios and to keep the fuss to a minimum which is why we have created a spread of not only bridal looks to inspire you but also guest looks that will tick all the style boxes. Speaking of guests, I am firmly in this category, for I am not even close to being a bride – the closest was at my sister’s wedding when I was a happy-go-lucky bridesmaid with two responsibilities: getting all the bridesmaid’s dresses in check and to fan my sister calm if she was creeping towards a fit of vapours. Because she assumed all the responsibility herself, she was washed out by the time the big day arrived but what a fairy-tale affair it was, against the rolling hills of the English countryside; she has impeccably twee taste. Putting a wedding together requires an entirely new skill set – Miss Ohlala gives us her insider knowledge about this. The dress is just the half of it, getting the makeup right is another battle in itself – there’s the tendency to want to look like a different person on your wedding day but Sofia Graniello urges you to keep it simple. Remember, trial runs will put you at ease. Elsewhere in the issue, we shed light on a very important woman in Bahrain at the moment: Anna-Marie Dowling, who comes with a string of hospitality credits to her name. Not only is she the first female general manager of The Westin and Le Meridien Bahrain City Centre but the first ever female hotel general manager in Bahrain. We salute!

Ethereal Beauty Rami Al Ali practically makes dresses fit for a queen. His modern fairy-tale gowns are the heigh of Haute Couture with their dreamy fabrics, billowy flows and exquisite embellishments. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate designer for our bridal issue. We speak to the Syrian born designer about his love for the female form and Moorish artistry What has inspired your SS16 collection? I was particularly intrigued by the decorative Moorish artistry; the details are beautiful and it really got the imagination going. I wanted my collection to reflect the different themes and eras but with a modern twist. I experimented with silhouettes, which capture the feminine figure and also incorporate voluminous, multi-layered skirts to seize the masquerade theme. The juxtaposition of both artistries were intertwined together through the form of art and careful use of timehonoured techniques. Your SS16 collection has that fairy-tale wedding about it. How do your bridal collections differ? Our bridal gowns are lovingly crafted with the most luxurious fabrics and embellishments, the latest bridal collection promises to curate unforgettable moments through the art of couture. What does Haute Couture mean to you? What defines it? It’s a part of who I am and is something I’m passionate about. It is a form of art that allows me to vent my creative energy. I am also a huge art fan and often buy extravagant pieces for my home. 38

www.ohlala-magazine.com

What kinds of fabric are you most drawn to? I used to be more into fluid soft fabrics, more sheered and light, such as muslin tulle and silks. Nowadays, I push myself out of my comfort zone, and work with more rigid fabrics, so I can explore new volumes and structures, such as satin duchesse, brocade and thick organza. Tell us a little bit about the stunning embellishments. How do you see that intricate process through? I like to think that every small detail in every design is made to create a bigger and more beautiful picture, and in this collection, we used and incorporated modern time-honoured techniques in the couture collection to modernise the classic embroidery and make it stand out. What kind of women do you love dressing? I wouldn’t say that I cater to just one ideal. There wasn’t any particular woman in mind when I designed any of my collections. I work with many different women; from younger women who want something more cutting-edge, to the older more conservative woman who is looking for something more sophisticated. I’m doing well with both clients and I like catering to both. When something is beautiful, it’s beautiful and you don’t question it.

“Every small detail in every design is made to create a bigger and more beautiful picture. We used and incorporated modern time-honoured techniques in the couture collection to modernise the classic embroidery and make it stand out” How do you want women to feel in your gowns? I want every woman to feel confident and beautiful all the time when wearing my designs. There’s no better looking woman than the one who feels confident in what she’s wearing - she immediately stands out. What part of the female body is the most endearing for you in terms of the way your gowns are cut? I mainly focus on the silhouette of a woman’s body rather than a specific part to bring out the beauty of the dress. Where is your favourite place in the world to unwind in? I like anything with a less city feel, any place with natural surroundings (mountains, forest, beach). Any tucked in small village or countryside. Which city encapsulates your brand’s style? New York and Dubai. 40

esisting feminine and masculine stereotypes and looking beyond current perfume trends, Les Infusions de Prada are the culmination of a reverence for the past, an understanding of our place in the present, and the forward- looking point of view of Prada. They embody the graceful weave of apparent contradictions at the heart of Prada: heritage moulded to modernity, poetry meeting precision, instinct alongside intellect, subtlety together with power, sensuality emphasized by freshness. An infusion is a transformative encounter from which the unexpected emerges, the new and the familiar. A sensory déjà vu. Les Infusions de Prada dare to recollect with the same emotion as a dream – a subconscious memory that is both powerfully subtle and mysteriously compelling. They are a dynamic imprint on the memory that supersedes the original ingredient. Under the creative direction and inspiration of Miuccia Prada, Les Infusions de Prada are blended by perfumer Daniela Andrier: creating a refined collection of fragrances of rare, sparkling character. Each Infusion reveals a distinctive personality. A confident light touch inspiring subtle intensity.

“I was thinking about the confrontation between the beauty of the past and what makes sense today.” Miuccia Prada

“In Les Infusions de Prada there is a rare luxury you don’t often find nowadays. At first they appear to be very simple, as if you were tattooing water with an ingredient, but in reality it is a very complex formula. In a similar way that water must be at a particular temperature to create the perfect tea, the base composition allows the beauty of a flower, wood or fruit to be revealed in a bright and sensitive way.” Daniela Andrier

The collection is composed of six iconic scents. Iris,IrisCèdre,Fleurd’Oranger, Vétiver, Oeillet and Amande. Each Infusion is a poetic interpretation of a single, emblematic natural ingredient. An elegant confrontation of tradition and modernity. Les Infusions de Prada are represented by the institutional codes of Prada. The vintage flacons are adorned with the classic Prada heritage crest, originally designed in 1913 by Miuccia Prada’s grandfather. In a contemporary twist, a coloured film has been moulded to the base of each bottle, tinting the glass and liquid. Each cap is also differentiated by its own colour. The enigmatic complexity and subversive simplicity of Les Infusions embody the transformative allure of Prada.

BridaL Beauty Etiquette

Q: My wedding is on a budget, and so is my “glam squad”. How can I look great on a budget?

Beauty editor, Sofia Graniello answers your burning queries on how to keep it A: Your wedding day is your together for that special day day, don’t forget that. But if your

budget is an issue then go for things that will last all day long. Having your nails on fleek is extra important. Stay gorgeous with this fabulous product with a gel-like and glossy finish that lasts up to 14 days.

Q: Any beauty musthaves for my bridal makeup routine?

A: Chanel takes the prize. Their Rouge Coco Stylo 2016 is an absolute winner if you want an elegant and long-lasting bridal look.

Q: I’m so scared to try new products before my big day, I have sensitive skin, but I’m eager to dab on beauty trends to look extra special.

A: If you want to look extra special look to removing brown spots with facials and sleeping masks.

Q: Should I make beauty appointments for my bridesmaids and myself before the big day?

A: As a bride-to-be you must have at least two options for your makeup need a trial run beforehand. That way, you can decide which one is your favourite.

Q: I am petrified to become an oil stick on my wedding day! How can I control the shine for pictures without stressing over it?

A: Blotting paper comes in handy for these sticky situations. Remember: blotting paper should absorb and eliminate oil, not your makeup.

Shield & Protect As the mercury starts to rise across the Gulf, Angela Beitz discusses the importance of looking after your skin and staying out of the sun

I

t’s starting to get quite warm. The memory of wintery desert days are now a distant memory as we brace ourselves for another brutal summer. Which brings me to my favourite topic to get preachy about. Sun protection. You can’t talk to an editor or beauty editor without them mentioning (or shouting) about how important it is to protect your skin from the sun. We are all well aware of how attractive tanned skin is. You only need to take a quick scroll through your Instagram feed to see

several beautifully bronzed people lying on the beach in the Maldives or the Greek Islands. But the hard truth is that spending time out in the sun can be very harmful, so it’s important to keep your skin protected and healthy allyear round instead of baking yourself like a rotisserie chicken. The common skin problems which result from over-exposure to sunlight are melasma, freckles, darkening of existing freckles and darkening of uneven skin tone. Sunlight can cause harmful effects on the skin such as premature ageing, pigmentation and the worst of them all…skin cancer. These issues are seen more frequently and in a more severe way with fairer skins but people with olive complexions still need be careful, particularly with melanoma. This brings me to my second favourite subject. The importance of sunscreen. Using a high SPF factor is crucial here in the UAE. SPF doesn’t refer to the strength of your protection it refers to the time. So, if you’re using SPF 10, you will get 10 times the amount of time in the sun it would usually take for you to burn. If you use SPF 40, you will get 40 times. So, assuming it takes your skin 10 minutes to burn with no protection, using SPF 40 you have 400 minutes protection from that application. If you are sweating a lot or doing a lot of swimming, you need to constantly reapply. SPF 30 should be used at an absolute minimum and I would strongly recommend SPF 50 and even SPF 100 if you are very fair and it’s great to use on your face. Sunscreen and beauty products have come a long way over the years and it’s great to see a lot of foundations along with CC & BB creams that now have SPF. In saying this, these products aren’t high enough in SPF for a day outside or by the beach or pool. Save them for office days when you won’t be outside in the sun as they don’t have the same long-lasting effects that sunscreen does. If the worst should happen and you do get sunburnt you need to get as many antioxidants into your skin as quickly as possible. Products with Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Aloe Vera, Green Tea will help to stop the free radicals that have harmed your skin and help to prevent premature ageing. The best thing you can do is to stay out of the sun and save yourself the drama and get a spray-tan. The nice bronze, glowy type. You’ll thank me for it later in life.

Travel Escapes As the helicopter lifted up from the ground with a shaky

hover against its own gusty air from below, I gulped with a pang of trepidation - our next stop was Monte Carlo – a swift 12-minute journey from Nice’s airport. I was flying with Heli Air Monaco – a 50 flight per day service – to the glitzy shores of Monte Carlo, lined with palm trees, quaintly coloured front doors and steeply-inclined streets. The Principality of Monaco has enjoyed a reputation of wealth and glamour, and my choice of transport to it, only seemed appropriate. The helicopter skimmed over the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, where the sun flared its rays onto the slightly choppy waters giving them a soft glow. The surreal “is this really happening?” moments set in from the outset; as we landed in Monte Carlo a fleet of shiny black Mercedes were waiting for us just off the heli pad – ah, a heli pad, the hallmark of Monegasque life. Winding between low-rise apartment buildings and stand-alone houses with impressive marbling and pillars I caught glimpses of the yacht filled ports as we chartered across the dainty streets. Being such a small place, 499 acres, Monaco feels like a playground for adults – with unlimited funds. What fun.

Monaco is home to a clutch of handsome hotels, historically rich and dripping with decadence. At the time I had just finished a breathtaking week in Paris for Fashion Week – my energy levels were down and I needed to luxuriate to get back on track – it’s a fabulously hard life, what can I say? Hotel Hermitage, my home for three nights, sits lordly on a gradient above the main port, overlooking the old-town. The grounds are endless, or rather, deep and layered. The main lobby is of a modest size but with the prestige of crystal chandeliers and elegance in its furnishings. It is said to be the birthplace of a luxury palace where at the dawn of the 20th century, Monegasque architect Jean Marquet built an upscale and luxurious hotel, a neoclassical edifice among orange and olive trees dotting Monte-Carlo, facing the sea. The labyrinth layout hints at The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, minus the twins and the general sense of foreboding – the Hotel Hermitage’s historic soul lingers on every staircase, every inch of the ceilings and the Winter Garden’s iconic glass roof speaks volumes of sophistication – even with its restoration, its former glory is still very much intact. The 278 rooms and 88 suites and 12 Diamond Suites renovated

“Monaco is a packed bubble of extravagance and spectacle” by Pierre-Yves Rochon offer unique comfort, a beautiful blend between ancient and contemporary. Hotel Hermitage perpetuates the chic quality of the Riviera and Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer’s art of entertaining. When I’m shown to my room, it’s as if I’ve walked into legend. The Belle Époque style interiors are intimate, cosy and rich if you’re a lover of luxury, you’ve met your match here. Despite being tastefully modernised, you can’t fault the historical loyalty – it almost feels like a black & white film set where Grace Kelly would be sitting all plumped up in a dramatic gown getting her makeup done against the vastly high ceilings. The nods to neo-classical style give an apt worldly touch to a hotel that has seen its fair share of the world’s glittering stars but also discreet tycoons who come to bask in the fruits of their labour in absolute splendor. The bed, more than your typical King size proportions is exceedingly comfortable. The balcony overlooks the main port and the stacked up city – 76

Monaco has a very tight feel to it but the residents are so warm and happy you look past it. I can imagine drooping over the balcony during the Grand Prix - taking in all the excitement and fervor of the season –is a sight to behold. The twee table and chairs make for a perfect spot for breakfast where you can gaze longingly as the day rises above you – again, the makings of a movie! I was travelling solo but joined a dynamo of Brazilian journalists, also on this press trip, to experience this opulence together. We started off by going on a complete hotel tour – we were even given a map so as to chart our whereabouts, it’s a real complex of a hotel – and we visited the many showpiece suites in this plush property. Among them was the Diamond Penthouse Suite of unparalleled splendor. Each room in this suite is delicately infused with haute-couture tones of taupe, aubergine and gold. You’ve got ample space including: three bedrooms, three living rooms, three bathrooms, two dressing rooms and one playroom for

Travel Escapes children with two terraces offering a panoramic 360 degree vide of the port. The classic touches are balanced with contemporary finishes (cutting-edge technology) that make it uber special. When it comes to dining, Monte Carlo is the centre of gastronomic greatness. In the four days I was there, there wasn’t one meal which wasn’t of Michelin standard. Dinner at Le Vistamar by Chef Joel Garault on the first night proved to be the best entry into the amazing offerings at this property. This restaurant is devoted to culinary art as well as home-grown goodness. Chef Garault sources his vegetables, fruit and herbs at the Condamine Market in Monaco, all provided by a local farmer. Each dish came meticulously prepared with flair and grace – my Hake fish gambero rosso from Genoa gulf/fennel was particularly smooth to cut into and was subtle and fresh in flavour and was my first foray into this member of the fish family, a real treat. With its idyllic setting overlooking the sea, you can’t go wrong here. For a tipple before lights out, I sauntered to the Limun Bar, located close to the lobby. It’s an intimate and elegant space decorated in pastel hues and is a prime venue to unwind after dinner. When it comes to spas, I cannot call myself a novice anymore. I have had my fair share of experiences that can only be likened to heaven-state. I was booked in for a Cryotherapy experience and a massage at Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo. The former left me with the most exhilarating feeling – I felt exhausted and energised in one go. You enter two cold chambers, one at -60 degrees and the other at -110 degrees (this is said to be the temperature in space) and you quite literally freeze. I managed to get through two whole minutes before my brain was about to explode. The experience is said to procure relaxation and reduce stress, I can also add that it gives you a youthful glow afterwards – all that freezing gives you a renewed freshness. I then headed to the treatment rooms for a soothing massage in a white washed, calming set up. Stress doesn’t stand a chance at Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, it’s supreme. You can also enjoy a light lunch at the health restaurant, L’Hirondelle, on its sun-dappled terrace. My meal was luminous in colour (prawn fritters, mango carpaccio, avocado tartar with fresh tomatoes, ponzu dressing) and a complete knockout in taste. Beyond Hotel Hermitage the Brazilian journalists and I whisked around the coast of Monte Carlo to visit other Société des Bains de Mer properties, namely the famous: Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel. These choice properties are in the high-rolling heart of the hotel circuit and are ludicrously luxurious in every possible sense. If you want to soak up the sun in the summer months, these hotels offer the perfect getaway experience, taking care of your and your every want and need. We also had a nine (nine!) course meal at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort’s Blue Bay restaurant by Chef Marcel Ravin. As far as sensory journeys go, this one was on overdrive. Among the standout dishes were: roasted racks of lamp coated with homemade lard and honey as well as the Elsa soufflé with Sicilian almonds. It was impossible to get more out of the Monte-Carlo dining experiences – ah, what a struggle to have. Monaco is a packed bubble of extravagance and spectacle. I highly doubt I will ever be a true Monegasque, but this extraordinary trip gave my mere mortalness an exciting jolt into a world like no other. www.ohlala-magazine.com

At the helm of hospitality

Anna-Marie Dowling is an accomplished woman. She has worked her way up in the hospitality industry from waitressing to housekeeping to being the first female General Manager in Bahrain for The Westin and Le Meridien Bahrain City Centre. This is her first foray into the Middle East and with just a few months behind her, she’s already blazing a trail 82

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Power Woman

“Yesterday’s successes are not tomorrow’s guarantees” “Oh she’s amazing, so on it,” we’re told by a member of senior management, as we wait in The Westin Bahrain City Centre’s plush Mezzanine Lounge to chat to the woman of the hour. AnnaMarie Dowling has breathed fresh air into the world of hospitality. Being the first female General Manager of a hotel in Bahrain alone is deserving of praise; but when meeting Anna, you know straight off the bat she hasn’t lionised that status for herself. She greets us with a sure hand-shake, a knowing smile (the one woman to another kind) wearing a sharp monochrome A-line dress with perfectly coiffed hair. She looks at home – she’s been on the island for a few months – but it clearly suits her. “I’ve been so taken by how friendly everyone is here and how they invite you everywhere – in London it takes time to get into those social circles, here it’s instant.” Anna’s entry into hospitality came during her formative years, without beating about the bush. She did a hands-on catering course at college for two years and then went straight into the industry. “When I left college I joined the Holiday Inn, working in house keeping – 16 rooms a day (taking 30 minutes per room). It was really one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever done! Just pushing the trolley is hard work!” she recalls. “I convinced the Holiday Inn to put me on the in-house training program – in today’s terms that’s an apprentice program – so I spent the next two and a half years working on the ground floor at every department, working as a receptionist, in reservations, the kitchen as a chef, in banqueting setting up meetings – I did it all.” But this isn’t a prerequisite ask of every aspiring General Manager – “GMs usually get a degree in hospitality and then go onto a graduate training program and then come up through the business that way.” Anna’s backstory is uniquely thorough. Her grounding across the board in how a hotel runs makes for an understanding GM – we’re sure her muscle memory kicks in all the time. As far as hospitality credentials go, Anna’s CV has edge. Working on over-drive at the Sofitel at London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 for three years is proof of her mettle. “You never knew what you were going to face – any day. If Heathrow went into meltdown and we had no rooms available, we had 2000 sleeping bags available to use in the ballroom. We’d also have instances where we had to produce a buffet for 300 people with 30 minutes notice!” The guest

demographic was so diverse at the Sofitel London Heathrow that Anna already has already come armed with the knowledge of the regional market. The level of business at The Westin and Le Meridien Bahrain City Centre has a different dynamic to it – being attached to mall gives rise to challenges but also a great attracter for business. “It’s not as relentless as it was at Heathrow but we’ll be at 100% on the weekends and then it will drop but then get events like F1 where we’re at capacity again,” notes Anna. “I don’t accept mediocrity.” A terse statement; one that makes us think of an iron fist in a velvet glove approach to maintaining standards. These businesses are complex, the client base have huge expectations and working in a hotel is physically demanding – Anna has a special affinity for people at the ground floor of the business, the heart beat of the entire operation – for without them there is no service. Working between two brands – The Westin and Le Meridien Bahrain City Centre, means she’s adhering to different ethoses. “The Westin is all about wellbeing and having a healthy outlook whereas Le Meridien is more about art and culture and discovering the local area. Our staff has to move between the two so they’re well equipped with the brand language that applies to each. Our Saudi Arabian guests are more aware of Le Meridien as there aren’t many Westins, so one of the challenges we are facing is educating our guests about its recognition as a luxury hotel.” With a string of projects in the pipeline, Anna has her work cut out for her: “I always say whenever there is a new General Manager, everyone has a new job because no two General Managers are the same. The team has to adapt to you and vice versa. I always make sure every department is valued, recognised and appreciated.” She leaves us with a potent point, one that succinctly reveals her unrelenting determination: “Yesterday’s successes are not tomorrow’s guarantees.”

Anna Checks In My favourite hotel is The Ritz in London, which I love but I have to have a second, The Taj Palace in Mumbai, it’s just so iconic. That hotel has a huge soul. Three items I couldn’t travel without are my iPhone, sunglasses and a good moisturiser. My favourite way to unwind in a hotel is a trip to the spa. Most women would say that! My idea of paradise is relaxing in the sunshine with no phone, because my work life is hectic. I keep fit by running – I usually do the Saturday exercise class in the Mall. My favourite place in the world is Hampshire. I love the sense of belonging when I go home. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Time & Care

A trip to the gynecologist can be a daunting task. We are oft confused about what to ask and how to address the issues at hand. Bahrain Specialist Hospital’s Head of Gynecology and IVF and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Minimal Invasive Gynecology, Dr. Murat, talks about his nurturing approach and why women should not suffer in silence

Talking about our lady parts can produce a string of nervous giggling. The world of gynecology tends to leave us a bit red-faced and confused – it’s a delicate subject with intricate detail that can alienate us. But visiting Dr. Murat at the Bahrain Specialist Hospital will instantly put you at ease, safe in the knowledge that his extensive expertise (having worked in some of Germany’s leading hospitals) will debunk myths and give you a comprehensive and clear analysis what you need to know. Dr. Murat is a man of many disciplines. He is also a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Consultant as a Gynecological Oncologist at the hospital. He is also a certified gynecologist doctor in the region to carry out robotic surgeries – used for highly sensitive and complicated and gynecological oncology cases, which is carried out complete laparoscopic or robotic without major incision. An expert in advanced laparoscopic surgeries, and handling cases of women’s cancers as well as performing minimal invasive surgeries, Dr. Murat has brought the international standards of expert gynecological care to Bahrain, making Bahrain Specialist Hospital the first in the region certified to carry out laparoscopic key-hole surgeries, as an accredited center from USA; “Center of Excellence for minimal invasive Gynecology” as the first international recognized minimal invasive center in Bahrain. Dr. Murat says that in a recent survey, “we learned that more than half of SRC’s center of excellence designees al around the world not only maintained patient satisfaction – but improved it! They also experience benefits such as less hospital stay, less complications, less recovery time. Since receiving the Center of Excellence status, our annual number of surgeries has doubled, the incidence of serious surgical complications has decreased by a factor of three to four times and patient follow up attendance improved significantly, among several other 84

positive developments. The constant improvement of our service processes and the focused commitment among our professional staff has enhanced our delivery of medical care and improved our patient outcomes.” Dr Murat’s medical credentials are beyond impressive – and thanks to the wonderful technology available at the Bahrain Specialist Hospital, you can wholeheartedly put your faith into seeking the most thorough treatment. “We are providing the state of the art medicine of the highest world standard – advanced surgeries and diagnostic options,” says Dr. Murat. The main problems that Dr. Murat deals with are in the simple or complex fibroids, endometriosis, gynecological cancers and hysterectomy arenas, but with the aforementioned Center of Excellence for minimal invasive Gynecology, this has built up a stellar reputation for both Dr. Murat and the hospital whereby even patients who are not residents of Bahrain come to the island for treatment. That’s really saying something. What makes Bahrain a medical haven for most of us is the time and care that every patient receives. Dr. Murat takes a gentle approach, putting the patients’ needs first and gives his undivided attention – a hallmark trait of Bahrain’s medical services versus Europe’s – you are always given the time of day here. We can certainly attest to the fact that in Europe, you are very much a number and are out of the ever spinning revolving door as soon as possible but at the Bahrain Specialist Hospital, your needs are seen through. Dr. Murat is highly intent on making sure his patients are wellinformed and understand their body and address problems when they need to. Dr. Murat has carried out around 2000 laparoscopic surgeries yearly, as well as having worked on high number of breast cancer cases, such as high number of surgeries on women’s cancer in well known centers in Germany. He is all about giving options and solutions - and with his soft-spoken nature and open mindset, he is pillar for his patients.

The Porsche 718 Boxster The hugely successful Boxster gets a new name and a new engine, so is it stillthe same small sports carwe’ve cometo know and love?

T

he first big news for the Boxster is the name. Instead of having separate Boxster and Cayman families, the two are being brought together, both in terms of name and shared chassis and engineering, under the same 718 family. So, think Porsche 718 in the same way you think Porsche 911, only add ‘Boxster’ for the cabrio and ‘Cayman’ for the coupe. Which brings us to the next major change, which is the engine. The 718 number designation isn’t random. The original Porsche 718 was a famous and successful racer that ran from 1957 to 1962 boasting a flat-four engine. Porsche are obviously at great pains to remind everyone that four cylinders can be good as the Boxster and Cayman purists lament the departure of the six-cylinder engines! That’s right – the Boxster range (and presumably the soonto-be-announced Caymans) now come with 2.0 and 2.5 litre turbocharged flat-four-cylinder engines. So how good is the new engine? Well, if you know Porsche, you know that they never take a step backwards, so as expected, there is more power, more torque, more speed and yet more efficiency across the Boxster range. As expected, some of that lovely racy growl is definitely lost along with the two cylinders, but I think that most people are overreacting. The new sound isn’t by any means a bad one – it’s still a racy sounding Porsche! And as I mentioned, it’s faster than the outgoing Boxster. The Boxster’s 2.0 litre engine puts out 295hp and 380Nm of torque, 88

www.ohlala-magazine.com

compared to the outgoing model’s 261hp and 280Nm of torque. This means a 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds with the PDK Sport Chrono package, is 0.8 seconds faster than its predecessor. For the Boxster S, the 2.5 litre engine puts out an impressive 345hp and 420Nm of torque, making for a 0-100km/h sprint of just 4.2 seconds, 0.6 seconds faster than before. The last major change over the previous models is the introduction of the rotary ring drive mode selector with the Sports Chrono Package. From this you can select the ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’ settings we know from previous models. However, what it also features is the ‘Sport Response Button’, which came to be known at our press event as the ‘Fun Button’. Once pushed, this button instantly adjusts the drive train for maximum acceleration for 20 seconds, for overtaking and so on. When you push it, the car instantly shifts down and throttle response is maximised, turning it into a lairy beast for a few seconds. You can either wait 20 seconds for it to time out, or press the button again to switch it off. To drive, the new Boxsters are still the beautifully balanced, agile and driveable sports cars they’ve always been, and the new steering and brakes are a marked improvement. In normal running mode, the ride is comfortable enough to make for a daily driver, though the same old lack of storage space still makes it a better city run-around or short day-tripper than a long-distance tourer. All in all, Boxster fans needn’t be worried about the outgoing six-cylinder engines – the new 718s are an improvement in practically every way!

Miss Ohlala

Will you marry me?

The concept of a stress-free wedding may seem like a fantasy, but it is not impossible. Miss Ohlala shares her expert advice for your big day

Organising a wedding is a bit like planning the arrival of a baby. There is an overwhelming amount of information on the web and everyone wants to chip in with their advice on how you should do it like they did. Here are my personal tips on what I consider important to bear in mind when wedding planning. Priority number one is the venue. Once you have booked your venue, everything else should fall into place. Make sure you have a recce of potential places and don’t be rushed into a decision, however don’t leave it too late as the good places do book up fast. Don’t be tempted to book somewhere so luxe that you can’t afford to feed your guests. But before you book your venue you need to determine the number of guests. Culling the guest list is a difficult task, so don’t attempt to do it when you or your fiancé are stressed. Start as you mean to go on when it comes to controlling your parents and your parents in law, or any other family member who is treating it like it is their wedding. So if you don’t want to invite your aunt X who never has a nice word to say about you, then don’t invite her (or just conveniently forget to send the invite out). It is your wedding, and you should be in control. Similarly, you are not obliged to ask all your best friends to be bridesmaids. If you have a friend who is mortally offended because you haven’t chosen her as a bridesmaid, then she’s probably not a great friend. And remember, you are not going to be able to keep everyone happy and take into account everyone’s opinions whilst organising a wedding. There are likely to be some tears along the way. We argued over when the speeches should take place, and who was going to collect the cheese, so it could have been much worse! Make sure you send out a “save the date” to ensure that everyone you want to be there can make it; there are some great electronic options for these. Gone are the days when invitations were only sent out a maximum of 6 weeks in advance, as our calendars are all too full nowadays! Next, focus on choosing a dress that reflects your personality and that you will still like when you look at the photos in twenty years time. Take the time you need to shop around but don’t leave 106 www.ohlala-magazine.com

it too late to order one, otherwise your favourite designer’s order book will be full up. Do enlist a couple of close friends to give you their honest opinions. And don’t leave your accessories until the last minute. A fabulous pair of powder blue shoes or a hand embroidered head piece and veil to match your dress can really make the outfit. On the big day, don’t underestimate the importance of keeping your guests fed and watered. Especially if you have older guests, you can’t expect them to stand around waiting for you to have your photographs taken for hours before they are able to sit down and eat. Try to include some personal elements into your wedding, whether it is table names and decorations that reflect you and your fiancé’s lives (such as places you have visited), homemade favours or a curated playlist. These personal touches will really make your wedding special for you and your guests. DIY decorations or enlisting the help of friends and family to create decorations can be fun and will save on expenses. Don’t ask your fiancé too many wedding planning questions as he will quickly tire of them. Save up just the important decisions for you to discuss together, and try to ask him when he’s in a good mood. I also suggest you delegate the honeymoon planning to your fiancé, as you will have your hands full and it will give him something to be in charge of. No-one likes a bridezilla so try not to be too much of a diva on the day. Get organised with checklists etc before your big day and then you can really enjoy it. Try to sit back, relax and enjoy every moment rather than fussing over minor details. If it is getting all too much for you or you don’t like making decisions, consider hiring a wedding planner or eloping. But don’t lose sight of the fact that, at the end of the day, it is just a party, and people just want to have fun.
