EDITOR’S LETTER During the Holy Month we have provided a round-up of some fashion favourites for you as well as a whole host of skin care, hair and beauty secrets for you to enjoy whilst we are still indoors. We are also super thrilled to land an exclusive interview with the biggest name in the beauty industry at the moment with none other than Charlotte Tilbury herself! With four “official” seasons (fall, spring, resort, and pre fall) and several arbitrary ones in between, the fashion calendar is pretty much impossible to keep up with. Even when you feel like you’ve finally figured out your wardrobe, that period is over, and there’s a whole new round of trends to account for. And for Muslim women who dress modestly, there’s also Ramadan to consider, but, as always we have you covered. This time always loans time to reflection and I’ve found myself contemplating what I want from my life and career. Not to mention, social distancing which has forced me out of my comfort zone in so many ways. Alone we can do so little, but together, we can do so much! Even the smallest human encounters are special and I’ve found that I’m getting closer to loved ones and catching up with family more. Even though guiding my parents through the realms of video calling and the 21st century has proved interesting at times, it just shows how resilient we all can be when we are in this together. Although we’ve been staying home for what feels like forever, we couldn’t help but let our minds drift back to our previously pampered selves at MOI BELLA Beauty Lounge in the heart of Riffa.

’m a busy bee at the best of times. Always have been, always will be. It’s something I’ve been working on over the years, and the current lockdown situation hasn’t helped which had me reminiscing hard about my pamper session at Moi Bella Beauty Lounge from a couple of months ago. Sometimes, you just need to take time to switch off and chill out, something I’m not great at doing. Something I had considered trying a few times, is escaping and treating myself to a little bit of a pamper. There’s something unique about going to a spa away from home and that’s why I was so excited when I first visited Moi Bella Beauty Lounge. The unassuming entrance and the traditional heritage style architecture brilliantly conceals the delights which lie within Moi Bella Beauty Lounge. After you utilise their valet service you are exposed to an abundance of luxuriant, tranquil, ornate spaces waiting to be discovered. The most unique and thoroughly overwhelming aspect of Moi Bella would have to

be the abundance of lobby and treatment areas which are all individual and exquisitely styled in this ladies-only paradise. The main lobby with marble floors and elegant illumination is accessed through huge carved wooden doors. This creates such a sense of grandeur and pays homage to the original use of the space - which was the owner’s former childhood home! The high ceilings are a complimentary fixture to the ongoing vivid colour scheme and opulent choice of fabrics throughout its illustrious interiors. There is a traditional aesthetic with intricate patterns running throughout all of its elements, but in a minimalistic capacity. Further highlights include the tessellated lighting around the archways and the subdued glow created throughout. Chandeliers and orbs crafted from glass provide a further fusion of ancient and modern elements.

BEAUTY Spotlight On arrival I was handed a glass of detox water (always a promising start) and given a little tour. The first thing I noticed was this place is a labyrinth of luxury – I wasn’t expecting so many treatment rooms! The place was so welcoming and was an oasis of tranquility. Soothing music was piped out and all the rooms were dimly lit with a variety of relaxing components. Plus the scent of all lemongrass in the air really added to the comforting atmosphere. After my tour, which also included showcasing their beautiful nail section, a little princess pampering area and a separate hair salon I was told about some of the treatments that they offer, including bespoke treatments for people of determination as well as wheelchair access. They really do have something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a makeover or just a little (or a lot of !) pampering. They offer a wide array of facials and skin treatments suited to your skin type, including specialist signature treatments. Not to forget, their expansive gym, outdoor pool and fitness studios. After my consultation with their senior therapist I decided to select some of their signature treatments; a candle massage, scrub and a Cleopatra Bath should surely do the trick. After all, I deserved to be pampered, as do all of you! Eager to get some stress busted, I changed into my fluffy robe and disposable underwear ready for the commencement of my relaxation journey. Prior to my initial treatment my therapist cleansed my feet as part of a welcoming foot ritual in their main lounge area. This area filters in an incredible amount of natural light with earthly elements of foliage and stones further amplifying the serenity of this experience. As I then made my way to my treatment room I was allocated the Opal treatment room - each room is named after a gemstone here. No stone is left unturned when it comes to Moi Bella’s attention-to-detail. As I lay face down I allowed the sensual scent of ylang-ylang and its powerful relaxation properties to envelop me. As I drifted away I couldn’t help but be impressed by the uniquely soothing and relaxing benefits of this warm candle massage. When lit the candles provided an intoxicating aroma that melted into a warm sumptuous massage oil. The warm oils were then drizzled over the skin and massaged with deep relaxing strokes to melt away tension and delicately nourished my skin. This made for an unparalleled holistic effect. Next up, on my pampering agenda was my body scrub that took place in their hammam area. It’s important to exfoliate before the Cleopatra Bath to allow the beneficial properties of the milk and essential oils to effectively penetrate your skin. The product used for exfoliation highly depends on your own skin type and preference, however I decided on the cherry and almond infusion which further elongated the sensorial elements of my prior treatment with an elevated aromatic aroma. During the scrub my therapist gently directed me, lifting my arms and legs as necessary to really get into those areas I frankly was unaware required exfoliating - this was thorough, but not intrusive in the slightest. After this, I tottered away to shower off and got dressed in a doughy daze before moving to their incredible Cleopatra Bath. I implore you all to try this particular treatment as I couldn’t help but delve into the luxurious level of ingredients

and feel at peace. My skin was severely dehydrated prior to these treatments and I had fallen guilty of a dull tone, but not any more! I came out glowing both inside-and-out as the experience is so relaxing with the products and the expertise of their staff providing exemplary services are truly amazing. Day 2: Shield yourself from the sun If you need to go outside during the day be sure to use sunscreen, however try to avoid long spells in the sun as UV rays can cause skin damage. that my hair needed a heavy dose of SOS. My barnet seemed to be in limbo with greasy roots caressing my scalp yet still being overly dry and sensitised throughout my lengths. This is when I was introduced to the world of clarifying shampoo that purifies the scalps, removes all residue and product build up, whilst also renewing the hairs hydro-lipid film – to keep your hair fibre both hydrated and in optimum condition. I was prescribed Phytodess Saro Shampoo which acts a botanical cleansing base with its coconut and saro essential oils. Honestly, the beeswax scent fills the air as you apply this to lengths and ends onto dry hair, massaging in

strand-by-strand. The compliments don’t stop there as you can’t help but have a feel-good factor from using this with its whopping 99.9% natural origin ingredients. Apply this on dry hair before shampooing and then you leave this concoction on your hair for a minimum of 15 minutes, but you can further benefit from its deep conditioned qualities by steaming your hair at home. You can wrap your hair with a clean plastic bag or a shower cap as your body temperature is enough to create the desired heat required. Then, when it comes to removing the product, without wetting your hair first, proceed with shampooing using PHYTODESS Saro shampoo to dry lather. Then when it comes to actually rinsing your hair you can do so with cool water to close the hair cuticle and leave it looking extra shiny. Also, what better time than now to let your hair dry naturally and avoid unnecessary heat and styling? If you don’t like to leave your hair too wet you can always air dry it 80% then leave the rest to dry on its own. Heat is a huge factor in drying the hair out, so I was recommended to try braiding my towel dried hair for a few hours as once you remove the you’ll have perfect beach waves. Honestly, it’s little hints and tips like this from Dessange that make you feel part of a wider community as they are genuinely invested in looking after you and your beauty needs - forever going that extra mile! deep end and selected their highest tier - Set Menu C. After sunset we received our delivery in the most sophisticated manner. The driver and concierge arrived in a luxury vehicle that exuded Four Seasons’ exclusivity. Arriving in insulated packaging to retain its heat and freshness, they certainly arrived in style. The multitude of dishes themselves were presented in a decadent and fittingly luxuriant way. There was no need to decant from the vessels they supplied as they looked sufficiently impressive for any Iftar gathering at home. A personalised greetings card was adorned with Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s iconic structure which was a subtle yet heartwarming touch.

CHIC Eats Four Seasons itself. The Oriental Mixed Grill was unique and toyed with our taste buds. It drew us away from the Persian spicing of other dishes and was ludicrously tender and juicy. The Hamour Harra was unique and subtly spiced so that the delicate fish was not overpowered. Ultimately choosing which of the main courses was the most delicious was a little bit like being asked to choose your favourite child; each had their own special qualities. Shish Taouk and Kofta provided a sense of familiarity along with fruity Moroccan Lamb Tagine which could have been cut with a spoon. The Chicken Biryani and Assorted Mahashi were expertly constructed and added vibrancy to our feast. The richly creamy Lasagna Bolognese was an unexpected but much welcomed addition to the menu. Satisfying and authentically Mediterranean. We even enjoyed some of these mains the following day by heating them in the oven, as opposed to the microwave so as not to hinder the taste, and they were fabulous.

The cold mezze included staples such as Tabouleh, Fattoush, Vine Leaves and Hummus which were accompanied with warm, fresh, pillowy Arabic Bread and sumptuously sweet Bahraini dates. The Muttabal and Potato Harra showcased the skill of the team of chefs with their seasoning techniques. The elevation of such simplistic dishes provided new realms of taste in a way that made the quality of the ingredients truly shine. The Lentil Soup was hearty and comforting. The Punjabi Samosa had layers of flavour providing pleasant heat spice-wise as well as being the perfect temperature to devour upon arrival. Cheese Rolls, Kebbeh and Spinach Fatayer were balanced and offered the perfect balance for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Perfect for a larger family gathering where diners have varying palates and persuasions. The main courses included in this set menu were equally show stopping. When we at Ohlala were offered the opportunity to test drive the 2020 Volvo XC40 T4, compliments of Motor City, we quickly accepted and soon found ourselves in the presence of this impressive, compact luxury SUV. The XC40 is a sophisticated looking vehicle, with a powerful stance accentuated by bold lines, gentle curves and quality finishes. Its youthful design exudes confidence and ability whilst maintaining the commanding presence held by an established performer. This car has a very attractive profile that highlights both the macho and

exclusive feel of exterior. The 18-inch alloy wheels add to the XC40’s imposing appearance and along with the aerodynamic spoiler, give the vehicle a sporty flair. The firm yet comfortable leather seats complete with pillow headrest welcomed our bodies into the cabin area. The 2-Zone Electronic Climate Control and panoramic sunroof are both options to deal with those hot summer days. The rear seating offers enough space for three people with ample leg and head room on offer throughout this SUV. Three top tether points are provided to fix children’s car seats. There are two cup holders located at both the front and the back of the vehicle and the rear seated passengers have access to their own air vents. The boot is spacious with a holding capacity of 460-litres, plenty of room to fit luggage, strollers or any other cargo. Once out on the tarmac, the XC40 T4 soon proved itself to be more than a pretty face. This model comes with a 2.0 litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that produces 252 hp. We found the steering, cornering and braking abilities of this model to be superb which ensured we felt safe throughout the experience.

Adding to this feeling of security are the numerous safety features for which Volvo has been so highly praised. These include a Blind Spot Information System, a Pilot Assist System, City Safety, Run-off Road protection & mitigation, as well as Cross Traffic alert with brake support. This constantly monitors the driver’s surroundings for potential hazards, such as other vehicles, pedestrians, or even large animals, that could potentially cause an accident. These systems will safely intervene as soon as an imminent collision is detected, and will even guide the driver safely back onto the road if they detect the vehicle drifting off-course. everyone could use a little help looking their best. From virtual weddings to work meetings, we all suddenly have to be on camera in our homes. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been optimising my own video chat setup: from knowing where to sit to get the best light, to choosing the right microphone, to just staying comfortable. It’s best to start with lighting because that will dictate where you are sitting. Open up your blinds and let the natural light pour in, but don’t let all that light hit your back. I recommend having your largest light source either right in front of you or no more than 45 degrees away from directly in front of you. Also be aware that your screen can be a large source of light, so adjust your screen brightness, too, especially if you are taking a call without natural light. A bright screen can blow the highlights on your face out, making you look more like Casper the Ghost than a video calling champion. One of the best parts about working from home is getting to wear sweatshirts and sweatpants all day, but that may not be the right move for a video call. Dress how you would for an in-person meeting, and make sure to follow your workplace’s dress code. You don’t need to do anything extra, like put on makeup if you don’t wear it normally, but it’s a good idea to present a reasonably good appearance. It’s best to avoid patterns or stripes which may be distracting on camera. It also doesn’t hurt to have good posture. Be attentive and engaged during the call. As tempting as it is, try not to do any other work or read articles or send emails. Don’t look at your phone and don’t eat! Try to look into the camera when you talk. If you look at yourself or others on your screen, it may look like you’re looking at something else. When you’re not talking, make sure you’re paying attention to whoever’s speaking or sharing their screen and that you’re looking at any materials you may need to reference. Again, others can see where you’re looking. As a courtesy to others, please keep your mic muted unless you are talking. You might be used to your neighbour’s midday living room party, but no one else is! Finally, there is one, and only one, acceptable camera angle: head-on and at eye level. Your table is almost certainly going to be lower than your face, and that means people are going to get an unflattering look up at you. Use a set of books, a stool, or a higher table to make sure your camera is at the same level as your eyes. You don’t want people to feel like they are looking up or down at you. Now, go out into the virtual world looking and feeling flawless.
