IT’S CARTOON TIME! Fashion brands’ collaborations with children’s and adult animations have been a cool trend for a while. However, we’ve seen an unconventional mix involving well-known labels this season. Check them out! Balenciaga’s ‘The Simpsons’ Collection brings the yellow family stamped on T-shirts, hoodies and handbags. The partnership went beyond clothing pieces – a short film was produced and presented at the beginning of the SS2022 fashion show. Balenciaga is known for creating different silhouettes and shaking the fashion world. The French brand LANVIN partnered with DC Comics to bring Gotham City into their SS2022 collection. From Batman to Catwoman, purple and black dominate the collection’s colour palette, covering T-shirts, dresses, bags and footwear. The Balmain universe has been painted pink in collaboration with Barbie. The multifaceted limitededition collection goes beyond physical fashion and is also available in NFT format. An array of footwear and clothing options were created for those who love the iconic doll.

Moschino has a tradition of bringing cultural symbols to their collections. This time, the label got inspired by nursery rhymes with printings of old drawing styles for elephants, giraffes and seals. The brand mastered the concept of funky and in-your-face fashion. 14

The Japanese animation film studio, Studio Ghibli, responsible for films such as Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro, collaborates with the fashion label Loewe for the second time. This season, the animation Spirited Away serves as the inspiration for a dreamy capsule.

Creamy yellow looks great in summer dresses and makes you feel like you’re being hugged by warm rays of sunshine. However, this shade looks best on red or blue skin undertones, while those with yellow undertones look best in bright or darker tones. If you land in the second category, mix your butter yellow with other pastel shades. But if you have a warmer complexion, embrace a total buttery look!

It’s time to shine! Shimmering fabrics and sequinned materials flooded the SS2022 runway shows. This metallic top from Celine can be a versatile option in your wardrobe.

1. Brunello Cucinelli paired its shiny buttoned top with sandy colours – a great way to add a twist to a classic look. Natural hues give summer vibes and we love the wide-legged trousers for the perfect laid-back style. 2. Are you bored of shirts and blouses under your workwear suit? Choose a sparkly top to team up with your tailored wardrobe for some pizzazz. This suit jacket is from Etro. 3. Mini-skirts are super trendy, and if you want to go for a feminine power look, pair your top with this Versace at FARFETCH black mini for a killer nightout option. 4. Double the sparkle when choosing your accessories. These Jimmy Choo flats add extra bling if you want to make a grand entrance. 5. Going for a casual get together? A pair of denims will work wonderfully to complement a sparkly top. Max Mara Studio has a selection of deep blue and light options – opt for a darker tone to look more sophisticated. 6. If the idea is to go for a red-carpet look, pair your sparkly top with a long metallic skirt for a complete shimmering look. Rebel Wilson looked fabulous in this Moschino number. 24

www.ohlalamag.net

OHLALA - Brand collaborations are a trend in the fashion world. Why do you think this is happening even more often? And how beneficial can it be for the labels involved? Tyler Ellis - Collaborations are wonderful because designers/artists with different areas of expertise get to work together to create products that push them out of their comfort zones, allowing the creative juices to thrive. Partnerships also enable brands to expand their footprint by showcasing their work to new pockets of consumers they might not typically have had access to. OHLALA - How do you choose which collaborations will be good for your brand? Tyler - When contemplating a collaboration, the main factors I consider are quality of craftsmanship and design aesthetic. I want to work with people who appreciate and understand luxury and want to create thoughtful and unique works of art. It’s also very important to make sure the potential partner is as engaged in the project as you are to make it truly worthwhile. OHLALA - What made Tyler Ellis and Hamda Al Fahim join forces and create a unique capsule? Tyler - Our views of luxury are the same – we want to create unique pieces focusing on intricate details and top craftsmanship. Brand synergy was there, so we decided to embark on designing a collection of couture clutches in the spirit of true luxury. OHLALA - For whom was this collection created? Tyler – It was created for the international, fashion-savvy woman who recognises and values artisanal craftsmanship and exceptional beauty. These unique pieces are meant to be enjoyed by glamorous women looking for a hidden gem – the extremely rare haute couture clutch – which is difficult to find in the current world of luxury handbags. OHLALA - What is the message behind these creations? Tyler - The clutches are timeless works of art, combining artisanal excellence from both the eastern and western worlds. We chose some of Hamda’s more ornate and traditional embroideries and paired them with my understated, geometric silhouettes, broaching a beautiful balance between our two aesthetics. The satins used on each handcrafted clutch are shipped directly from my factory in Italy to Abu Dhabi, where they are embroidered by hand and then sent back to Italy, where the newly embellished fabric is faceted to our custom-made metal frames/shells. It’s all about the details! OHLALA - What did you learn in this partnership? Tyler - Never rush and make sure you are proud and happy with every design aspect. Delays are not ideal but, in the long run, taking time to build the exceptional product you are envisioning makes it all worth the wait. OHLALA - What key elements and main inspiration can’t be missed in a collection created for Middle Eastern women? Tyler - When designing a collection with Middle Eastern women in mind, I make sure to focus on elevated elegance with eye-catching details. To me, the region embodies sophisticated yet stimulating fashion – a classic, sleek shape with embellishments worthy of a queen. OHLALA - Will we see more Tyler Ellis X Hamda Al Fahim capsules in the future? Tyler - Hamda and I have never met in person. We designed the entire capsule via zoom and email. I’m hoping to travel to the region later this year and visit Hamda and her atelier, where I can truly take in her beautiful work. We shall see what incredible inspiration that might lead to – stay tuned! @tylerellisofficial

Insights

A Moment In Time OHLALA showcases a range of luxurious timepieces and jewellery to add to your ensemble. “Give me the luxuries of life, and I will willingly do without the necessities.” - Frank Lloyd Wright, American architect and designer

P

icture this: you’re wearing a sequined, couture evening gown with a pair of dainty six-inch stilettos. Now a different scenario: you’re wearing a ready-to-wear, printed playsuit for a ladies’ coffee morning paired with studded sneakers. Did you visualise accessories for both looks? Perhaps a layered diamond necklace for your gown with a plunging neckline or a leather strapped watch with a stone-studded rose dial for your romper. If you didn’t, then it’s time to understand (and take advantage of ) the power of accessories – they can transform your outfit – from watches to all sorts of jewellery. The history of watches began in 16th-century Europe, where they evolved from portable spring-driven clocks, which first appeared in the 15th century. Nuremberg clockmaker Peter Henlein is often credited as the first German craftsman who made clock-watches, ornamental timepieces worn as pendants close to the body. However, other German clockmakers were also creating miniature timepieces during this period, which were fastened to clothing. Pocket watches came around in the 17th century and men began to wear watches in their pockets instead of as pendants, though women wore them as pendants right into the 20th century. Watches evolved as accurate instruments to track time only in the 19th 34

www.ohlalamag.net

century. That being said, they continue to be worn as an embellishment. Adorning the wrists of fashion-enthusiasts and style connoisseurs, these pieces of jewellery – with their precious-stone-studded dials – elevate looks in seconds (pun intended). They are a creative platform for designers to express their ideas and showcase their personalities. Jewellery is an intrinsic part of the Bedouin Arab culture; Oriental pearls and precious and semi-precious metals and stones are popular among the locals. Ethnic designs, like the iconic gold coin and those incorporating Arabic lettering and lunar influences are ubiquitous at weddings and traditional gatherings. Arabs have also embraced modern and contemporary as well as international styles. Bespoke and ready-towear timepieces and jewellery – Arabic dial watches, mother of pearl, pendants and signets integrating Arabic calligraphy, soft tassels and beads – that blend both local and global cultural influences are widely accepted. The truth is that we love alluring wearable ornaments in the Middle East and with the latest jewellery and watch exhibitions happening around the globe, such as the Watches and Wonders Geneva, we are professing our admiration for this intriguing and exciting world. We hope you enjoy our selection of beautiful gems and timepieces from the most recognisable brands in the world.

P

atek Philippe has a persuasive track record of ongoing technical advancements that have been happening in their 180 years of history, with over 100 patents. This tradition of innovation is visibly seen in the domain of grand compilations that rank among the special assets of the manufacturer. For the first time, Patek Philippe introduce two of their iconic, ingenious and user-friendly functions together in one watch. The full calendar with day/date/month that requires only one manual correction per year from the Annual Calendar model patented in 1996, and the two time zones displayed in the Travel Time created in 1997 are joined in the newest Ref. 5326G-001 Annual Calendar Travel Time with a new case design. The watch is endowed with the new self-winding calibre 31-260 PS QA LU FUS 24H (eight patents), the new Ref. 5326G-001 Annual Calendar Travel Time shines with a date display synchronised with local time, automatically corrected forward or backwards when the time zone is changed. To provide a noble framework for this unique function, Patek Philippe created a new exterior with a Calatrava case guilloched with the hobnail pattern around its entire flank. It features a charcoal grey vintage dial reminiscent of old photo cameras in fine detail. Aficionados of exclusive design will also find the same dial and case in another watch with the same aesthetic signature without additional functions: the Ref. 5226G-001 Calatrava powered by the self-winding calibre 26-330 S C movement.

With vintage flair, two other models deserve to be highlighted. The Ref. 5320G-011 Perpetual Calendar with three-tiered lugs shows elements of a model from 1945, featuring a new opaline rose gilt dial that emphasises its ‘vintage’ background. And the classic Ref. 5172G-010 Men’s Chronograph, inspired by the 1940-1950 models, shows an opaline rose gilt dial beneath which a classic movement with six patented innovations tracks the time. Following the inspiration from past models, the brand revealed three new versions of World Time watches. This model was launched in the 1930s and a unique feature makes it possible to read the local times of all 24 time zones at a glance. Thanks to an exclusive mechanism patented in 1999, the user needs to actuate the pusher at 10 o’clock to correct all displays in one-hour steps simultaneously. In addition to the Ref. 7130R-014 Ladies’ World Time watch with an olive green dial, Patek Philippe welcomes two interpretations of existing models. The Ref. 5230P-001 World Time combines a platinum case with a blue dial and matching strap for the first time. Its dial shows a new manually guilloched circular pattern inspired by the Ref. 5110 (2000): it was the first watch fitted with the patented World Time mechanism. The Ref. 5231G-001 Rare Handcrafts World Time watch showcases a new map in grand feu cloisonné enamel depicting Oceania and Southeast Asia in the centre of its dial.

Beautiful Blooms The Graff Wild Flower collection combines a fresh perspective and contemporary reinterpretation of the jeweller’s heritage floral motif.

38

www.ohlalamag.net

P

aying a joyful tribute to the English Garden, the Graff Wild Flower collection is modern, feminine and youthful. Untamed femininity, cheerful irreverence and a daring youthfulness lie at the heart of this capsule, highlighting their founder Laurence Graff ’s fascination with the emotional power of gemstones. Delicately designed, these diamond studded creations set in white gold inspire you to explore and freely express yourself. You can wear the pieces singly or in combination with others, as each piece in the collection is distinct but complements the others. A one-of-its-kind bouquet, the Graff Wild Flower collection brings beautiful blooms to adorn your hands, ears and neck – with rings, bangles, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and pendants – each carefully crafted down to the last petal by master artisans. The floral motifs are set in such a way that each petal gently lifts toward the person wearing the piece with sculptural volume and organic asymmetry, creating the illusion of an abundantly blooming garden of fresh flowers. The Graff Wild Flower collection includes four flower styles in different sizes and arrangements, from trios and individual blooms to floral clusters and blossoms laid out in a row. It highlights the brand’s expertise in creating more adventurous jewellery, especially when the jewellery industry was highly conventional. Each jewel is unique, much like the woman wearing it; however, it complements the capsule as a whole, which is why you can wear these signature pieces in any combination, making the Graff diamonds your own. Floral motifs have long been part of the brand’s heritage. For over half a century, Graff has operated at the very pinnacle of the high-end jewellery industry, discovering and crafting diamonds of brilliance and rarity, transforming the brand into a global hallmark of innovation, creativity and craftsmanship. With the Graff Wild Flower collection, they explore a fresh perspective and contemporary reinterpretation of the flower – one that’s wild – free from tradition – and bursting with life. The Graff Wild Flower is a statement of empowerment. We love the Wild Flower Large Diamond Cluster Ring and Wild Flower Diamond Sautoir Necklace – statement pieces that will instantly elevate your ensemble while still retaining the delicateness of a flower – empowered and feminine. A Time to Sparkle These exquisite timepieces and jewels by Chopard are what you must add to your collection of high-end accessories. 40

www.ohlalamag.net

O

ne of the last family-run, high-end watchmaking and jewellery companies, Maison Chopard is imbued with the aesthetic and creativity of master artisans that have steered the jewellery brand at the helm since its foundation in the 1800s. A legacy handed down by founder, LouisUlysse Chopard to his sons and taken over by German goldsmith and watchmaker, Karl-Scheufele, after that. The Chopard brand is renowned for their benevolent entrepreneurial spirit – ‘ethical luxury’ and ‘creative audacity’. Since the 1980s, Karl’s children Caroline and Karl-Friedrich manage the ladies’ and men’s collections, respectively.

Alpine Eagle

Chopard has introduced the Alpine Eagle XL Chrono to their successful Alpine Eagle collection that was launched in 2019. The Alpine Eagle collection is a modern reinterpretation of the St. Moritz watch, the first horological creation by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, in the late 1970s. The flyback chronograph, a first for the capsule, comes in a new 44mm diameter case and is available in three versions – Lucent Steel A223 with an Aletsch Blue dial, Pitch Black dial and a creation which combines Lucent Steel A223 and ethical rose gold with a Pitch Black dial. Inspired by the power of the eagle and the beauty of the Alps, the collection already boasts 10 pieces in two case sizes – small and large.

Happy Hearts Flowers

Featuring two of Chopard’s iconic symbols, hearts and dancing diamonds, the Happy Hearts Flowers capsule comprises a ring, a pair of earrings, a chain pendant and a bangle bracelet. These jewels have five red, diamond-set or mother-of-pearl hearts arranged like petals around a dancing diamond. Fashioned in 18-carat rose or white gold, these luxe pieces embody the generosity of the brand and the ‘bighearted’ woman wearing them.

L’Heure du Diamant

The L’Heure du Diamant collection is reinvented in this luxurious timepiece featuring a new cushion-shaped dial rimmed with diamonds and the maison’s emblematic tree bark-textured white gold bracelet – also available as a leather strap. The ribbon of diamonds encircling the case lights up the delicate mother-of-pearl dial – itself dotted with 12 diamond hour-markers. Further, it’s fashioned using the entirely hand-crafted goldwork technique, which the Scheufele family developed in the 1960s, and the collection’s emblematic crown setting technique allows the diamonds to shine through. The creations reflect the spirit of the town – an ode to its beauty. The city of lovers is where literature’s most iconic romantic story, Romeo and Juliet, was set. The jewels in the collection are made in three colours of gold, having polished and satin finishes. With a contemporary and minimalist aesthetic, the capsule reintroduces the four-petal diamond flower that has been the centre of other collections by Roberto Coin. The repetition of the floral motif is inspired by Verona Arena, an iconic architectural structure in the city.

Princess Flower

Inspired by the floral decorations of Venetian palaces, this collection incorporates the jewellery brand’s signature floral motif in an elaborated way. The flower made of small diamonds becomes the focal point of each piece in this capsule. While the petals are made of gold and precious stones, the articles in the Princess Flower collection also exhibit the brand’s characteristic twisted wire detail, which is used in the internal structure to create the three-dimensional frames that hold the flower. The outer part is made of lapis lazuli, turquoise stone, black jade or malachite – a colourful garden of different shades.

Rock And Diamonds

The Rock and Diamonds collection is for the woman who, like a diamond, is strong, unique and precious; her nature is like that of a rock: composite – she is complex and an amalgamation of contrasting qualities. She is energetic and ready to conquer the world with her charm. The collection integrates these characteristic traits. The pieces use three colours of gold – rose, yellow and white – including straight cut lines and shapes but also tassels. Like fluid embellishments, the metal is carved as robust ridges integrating delicately set diamonds, making them sturdy yet feminine – just like the woman wearing them.

A Cultural Icon OHLALA looks at the evolution of Swiss luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet’s avant-garde collection, the Royal Oak, over 50 glorious years.

44

www.ohlalamag.net

L

aunched in the early years of the quartz crisis in the 1970s and early 1980s, the first Royal Oak watch combined sportiness with ancestral know-how, heralding the beginning of a new fine watchmaking era.

1970s

Audemars Piguet commissioned Gérald Genta, a trained jeweller and experienced watch designer, to combine the manufacturer’s unconventional designs and the cultural groundswell of the ‘60s and ‘70s to create the most expensive steel watch on the market. It drew strong reactions, including criticism, nonetheless marking the beginning of a steady commercial success for Audemars Piguet. In 1976, the first women’s model was launched.

1980s

Audemars Piguet’s ‘Quartz’ debuted in 1978; the next 10 years witnessed at least 59 models equipped with six different quartz movements. The brand also played a crucial role in the revival of classic complications; the first day-date model was released in 1983, followed by a new one with multiple calendar functions. In 1986, Audemars Piguet introduced an 18-carat yellow gold timepiece, the first openworked design and the collection’s first sapphire.

1990s

1992 witnessed the launch of the first limited-edition model and the first leather strap. In 1993, the Royal Oak Offshore was launched, eventually giving rise to a new collection. The first openworked women’s models made their debut, and gem set models gained ground – the Royal Oak High Jewellery Openworked timepiece ushered in a new wave of high jewellery timepieces in the early 2000s.

2000s

The brand incorporated the new guilloché Grande Tapisserie dial, which gained popularity as larger watches were preferred. The Tradition d’Excellence cross-collection series combined complications innovatively. The 2000s witnessed the rise of limited editions in collaboration with personalities including Nick Faldo, Sachin Tendulkar and Michelle Yeoh.

2010s

A blend of refined aesthetics and technical mastery permeated throughout the decade, notably with the Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked – Audemars Piguet’s patented mechanism improved precision and stability. Another technical breakthrough was the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, which became the world’s thinnest automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch of its time.

2020s

Forever Young. This decade has seen so far a new generation of 39mm Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin models with increased performance and reliability. The Royal Oak Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon – the manufacturer’s first ever flying tourbillon housed in a 39mm extra-thin ‘Jumbo’ case – will soon be complemented with an additional Royal Oak Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon in a 37mm diameter – yet another first for the brand. @audemarspiguet

Looking Younger Lancôme have long been an authority when it comes to technology applied to skincare formulas. They have recently launched a new product, the Rénergie H.C.F Triple Serum, to affirm this reputation.

W

e are always on the hunt for the perfect anti-ageing product, from treatments to creams; looking younger has never been so popular. In this race, Lancôme has introduced a new high-performance skincare product: Rénergie H.C.F Triple Serum. The innovative elixir reaches the market 30 years after the brand’s Rénergie Double Performance launch. However, this is not an ordinary serum; it has a pioneering formula that unites three previously unmixable active ingredients in one pump – Hyaluronic Acid, C+Niacinamide and Ferulic Acid. In each dose, the active ingredients have the best concentration to work in harmony in one formula. This blending was made possible using the brand’s knowledge in regenerative sciences and powered by 40 years of bioengineering research and an advanced understanding of the skin’s layer-by-layer architecture. The packaging also plays a significant role in enabling these ingredients to be combined. Lancôme’s research team have been reconstructing human skin models in laboratories as an alternative to animal testing since 1979. Over the years, the models have constantly evolved to be more predictive and reliable, mimicking skin in all its complexity – layer by layer. This research offers 48

many possibilities, such as modelling different skin and age conditions to understand the essential role of cellular and tissular interactions related to them. They can also analyse the synergy between potent active ingredients and skin layers in real-time to assess their efficacy on the regenerative potential. With this understanding, Lancôme determined the best combination of active ingredients, calibrated at optimal concentrations, to unlock a new era in high-performance restructuring anti-ageing skincare. Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum combines active ingredients renowned for acting on different signs of skin ageing such as skin volume, wrinkles and dark spots. The three derm-active ingredients used are combined with gluco-peptides from linseed extract, the signature performance engine of the Rénergie range. The serum also comes in three different textures, a creamy option with hyaluronic acid, a light emulsion containing vitamin C derivative and Niacinamide, and a clear gel to stabilise and protect the ferulic acid from degradation. U

sing YSL’s colour expertise and powered by Perso, ROUGE SUR MESURE is a lip colour device that creates exclusive lipstick shades. The possibilities are almost endless. The machine comes with three colour-rich cartridges in four distinct shade families: red, nude, orange and fuchsia. The sleek black device uses artificial intelligence and real-time data to feature a patented motorised system that blends and dispenses a bespoke lip colour.

How Does it Work?

First, you need to download the ROUGE SUR MESURE app and choose your cartridges. Place each selected colour into any three holes and click into place. Experiment as much as you like digitally using the app. When you reach the shade you want, decide how much lip colour you would like to make by selecting your lip size and pressing the Create button. Using the applicator brush, blend the formula, and it will be ready to wear.

With four colour families and three shades each, ROUGE SUR MESURE offers thousands of shade possibilities. The four primary hues were stipulated using Perso technology and designed to appeal to all skin tones from west to east. I

f you’ve never worn a drop of foundation or lip tint in your life, tell us, how does it feel to be God’s favourite? For the rest of us lesser mortals, make-up – be it high coverage or just some tinted primer with lip oil and mascara – is an integral part of our daily routine. The summer months are upon us and we’re slowly but steadily inching toward the hottest time of the year. It’s best to keep things light, which will allow your skin to breathe. “People want to feel fresh and enhance their natural beauty rather than applying layers of make-up,” says Christina Barron, a make-up artist. “For a daily look, a little concealer and some BB cream can work wonders. Pair it with mascara for a wide-awake eye. We all know the humidity and heat can make your make-up run so, primer, powder and setting spray are key.” Mai Almoayed, Founder of The Makeup Manual, says: “Usually, in summer, I suggest going with light-weight foundations for a more bareskin look, especially for tanned summer skin. Then again, it depends on the skin type. If you have flawless skin or few blemishes, ‘no-make-up looks’ are suitable, but if you have scars and blemishes, you might want to choose a slightly thicker foundation to cover up. For a daily look, go with a hint of concealer under the eyes, cream blush on the cheeks, mascara, and clear brow gel – super-fast and easy and it looks simple. I recommend the cream blush as creamy or liquid products keep the skin fresh and moist, giving it a glow.” POUTS & PALLETS Speaking of make-up trends, Mai recommends lip gloss, which is back after years of matte lips taking over. She says: “Lip gloss is part of the contour and highlight effect and makes your lips look fuller. Don’t apply it all over, try only the centre on both upper and lower lips.” There are some colours that simply look better during the summer. Warm tones are your best friend. Christina recommends lots of terracotta and orange. “It’s such a flattering colour for people in the Middle East,” she says, adding that bright blush and pops of orange are all over the runways.

Mai, who personally loves simple colours, says that neutrals continue to be trendy and popular. They don’t hide your features. Instead, they enhance them, making them more beautiful. SUMMER STROBE Highlights and bronzers are summer staples worth investing in whether you’re spending a day at the beach or by the poolside or even for a casual day out and about. Both Christina and Mai recommend using highlighters to get a beautiful glow. Mai says: “Always finish your make-up with waterbased fixing spray. This will turn any powder effect into a dewy, natural finish, and highlight the temples and upper cheekbones.” Focus on areas that reflect light like your shoulders and calves if they’re exposed. The summer heat already puts a lot of pressure on your skin so, having a good night-time routine is equally important. “Micellar water doesn’t just clean but also tones and removes excess oil and dirt,” says Mai. “Follow this with an elixir serum and a super hydrating cream for your face and eyes.” Cleansing, toning and moisturising are the holy trinity of good skin care. Sunscreen or sunblock are a must too; if you’re the outdoorsy type, a higher SPF is better than if you’re a desk jockey, then you can use products with a lower SPF. It’s also important to stay hydrated, especially in our part of the world where air conditioners are the norm. While they offer respite from the heat and humidity, they strip your skin’s moisture. Drinking six glasses of water a day on average will help maintain your skin’s pH balance. Further, it will flush out toxins that could clog your pores leading to acne and pimples. The moisture level in your skin increases elasticity – the more the elasticity, the fewer the wrinkles. If you find water boring, try flavoured or infused varieties – a Middle Eastern favourite, palm water has a host of benefits. A Reinvigorating

EXPERIENCE

We all need to press pause from time to time and allow ourselves to delve into a universe of beautification and relaxation. Fernanda Langhammer visited the Thalassa Sea & Spa at Sofitel Bahrain, where she embarked on a fantastic full-body journey. 54

I

love driving to Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. It feels like you are going out of town, away from busy streets and city centre noise. It gives you the feeling that you’re going to a unique retreat and, best of all, reaching this peaceful haven took me just 20 minutes – one of the perks of living on a small island. My final destination? The Thalassa Sea & Spa at Sofitel Bahrain wellness centre. I parked near the spa’s private entrance. But if you have the time, reach the area through the magnificent hall and gorgeously decorated lobby – it’s definitely worth it, trust me. Just the walk through the resort will elevate your spirits. It was my first visit to the Thalassa Sea & Spa and, before I started my treatment, Melona, my lovely therapist, took me to tour the space. I didn’t know how big it was! It has two floors dedicated to thalassotherapy, beauty and relaxation. With lots of spacious treatment rooms (dry and wet) and two indoor pools, one with heated seawater and the other with sweet water – in the perfect ambience with special lighting and incredible décor. The spa offers male and female spaces with separate and common areas. Even a fitness area facing the outdoors is available for those looking for a complete wellness experience.

Melona took me to the changing room, so I could get into my robe and start my treatments. The changing room is beautifully lit with an impressive dome with abstract floral designs and a glass chandelier. After appreciating the space and inhaling the delicate aromas, I moved to my treatment room to experience the 60-minute HydraFacial therapy that deep-cleans, exfoliates, and hydrates the skin using the Hydra Touch H2 machine. The mechanised tool works with highly-concentrated hydrogen water that releases active oxygen to fight skin ageing. The non-invasive procedure uses a wand that serves as a small vacuum to deeply clean and exfoliate while delivering serums customised to your skin type. I was curious and ready to embrace this innovative technology that would transform my complexion. The machine comes with three different types of solutions called S1, S2 and S3 with their specific purposes. The first step, S1, removes dead skin cells and clarifies pores. In the second step, using the S2 bottle, extraction is the goal, focusing on the T-zone area and blackhead removal. Finally, the third step, S3, is all about hydration. My therapist followed specific movements that started from my chin and went up to my forehead in each step. When I thought she was done, she then moved to a fantastic lymphatic drainage face massage using her hands and Anne Semonin serum. When applied to the face, this massage technique improves circulation, reduces puffiness, refines discolouration under the eyes and drains toxins. I honestly loved this part. The movements were rhythmic, technical and singular. The HydraFacial treatment ends with two other wands that promote lifting and help the serum penetrate more profoundly into the skin. The micromassage stimulates the muscles via a weak electric current to rejuvenate and tighten the skin.

56

www.ohlalamag.net

Even after the first treatment, you can see visible results. When I looked in the mirror, my skin was radiant, and I looked 10 years younger! The fine lines were subtle and my skin texture was incredible – I was really impressed. My face felt lighter than ever and relaxed after every muscle had received a magical touch. The skin was replenished, the colour was more uniform, and it didn’t feel dry anymore. After such a comprehensive and unique facial massage, it was time to move to a different room where Melona would treat my body. The body massage was not planned, but after a week of intense work, tension and stress, I felt like I deserved this extra love. And after experiencing the incredible professionalism of the spa team, I couldn’t miss this opportunity. The therapy started with a warm bath for my feet that were gently exfoliated with coarse salt. I then laid down on a comfortable bed facing down so Melona could work her magic on my back. She was impressed with the knots in my shoulders, right arm and hand (a gift from the previous press week) and prepared a tailor-made session to tackle my specific issues. She applied a combination of Swedish, Deep Tissues and Aromatherapy massages to treat and heal my muscles and nerves and improve blood circulation. Another hour of pure bliss and paying attention to myself. It was, unfortunately, time to leave, but what a fantastic spa day! My experience at the Thalassa Sea & Spa was more than I expected. The environment, the team and especially the treatments, go beyond your regular spa visits. If you are looking for one-of-a-kind therapies and a relaxing and detoxifying escape, this is the place to head to. Now that I found you, I hope to come back soon! FABULOUSLY FACE FRAMING Looking for fuller brows, Liz O’Reilly conquered her fears to try the latest in microblading technology at Dessange Paris Bahrain.

58

I

t’s no great beauty secret that eyebrows frame the face and if you naturally have reasonably thick, well-defined and shapely brows, you can count yourself blessed. But many of us suffer from over plucking, a strong sign of misguided youth trying to emulate our celebrity heroines and fashion icons. Others simply have sparse or misshapen brows or something that, to us, just doesn’t look right. That’s the case for me. Though I’ve never been an over enthusiastic plucker – or threader or waxer for that matter – I’ve always felt my eyebrows are just too far apart on an already, in my opinion, overly wide forehead. I am very fair. The sun, and, dare I say, age, have taken a toll on my naturally red hair. And, in recent years, I’ve noticed my usually light brown brows taking on more than a hint of almost white, making the gap between them seem more pronounced than ever. Of course, there are various ways to get around this, such as tattooing. But, to be honest, I’ve seen some hideous examples of this – the spectacle of women with giant dark slugs plastered across their browlines would surely deter any reasonable person!

www.ohlalamag.net

59

So, I’ve always been a pencil girl. However, therein lies a problem. I can start the day with perfect-looking, manicured brows but, thanks to a combination of high humidity, very dry skin and more than a little gentle glowing from the heat, they don’t stay that way for long. I have been looking into the technology of microblading for quite some time, so when an invitation came to try the process from an establishment as prestigious as Dessange Paris Bahrain, I jumped at the chance to put my eyebrows – and, indeed, my whole face really – into their very capable hands. On arrival, I was shown to the changing rooms and donned the uberfluffy, luxuriant white robe (of which my colleague, Fernanda, always waxes lyrical) and was taken into the spa area where microblading specialist, Uulkan Samieva, introduced herself and immediately applied numbing cream liberally on both my brows, encasing them in thin plastic wrap to enhance and speed the 30-minute numbing process, before sitting with me to describe what was to come. Microblading is a form of cosmetic, semi-permanent make-up performed using a manual (not a machine) disposable handheld tool, composed of very fine needles resembling the shape of a blade, to hand draw each individual hair and then implant the pigment into the skin. Uulkan inquired about my desired shape, which I had already sketched, and explained that she would first map out my new brows using fine thread coated with pencil pigment. She would then make one pass over with the ‘blade’ to make the initial cuts to form the feathery strokes that so strongly resemble individual hairs. Then, after applying more numbing cream, she would make a second pass to implant the pigment.

60

www.ohlalamag.net

BEAUTY

Boutique

She showed me the colour she had chosen which, hallelujah, was very, very close to my natural shade. Then I settled on the bed and she proceeded to measure the correct position – nostril up and then string taken outward via the arch to the tip – for my new brows. The effect when seen on my skin looked very similar to a technical drawing and confirmed that I was indeed somewhat lacking in the central area. I had some qualms about the shape of the inner corners, requiring rounded inner edges rather than square, but Uulkan swiftly brought her trusty pencil and showed me how she would adapt the shape to my preference. And then, we were ready to start. I must admit, I am not a particularly brave woman and having suffered the agony of eyeliner tattoos some years ago, I was kind of dreading this part. But, I honestly need not have worried. It would be dishonest to say the blading sensation was pleasant but it certainly wasn’t anything like I had expected. More like the snapping of an elastic band on the wrist and over so quickly that I barely registered it. In fact, the application of the second coat of numbing cream before the next session, was much more uncomfortable and, again, since we were quickly onto the pigmentation round, the stinging did not last long. The pigmenting felt as mild as the initial blading and I was actually able to relax, which was a great surprise to me. Literally, before I knew it, it was time to face the music – or, in this case, the mirror. I experienced a minor wobble; you know that moment when you’ve had a professional hair or make-up session and are desperate to see the outcome but are almost too scared to look? Well, that’s how I felt. The eyebrows are such an important part of the face and it could have gone horribly wrong – perhaps I over or under estimated the colour, maybe I would

hate the shape. I will, now, admit that I’d purposely kept my bangs long in anticipation of disaster and those thoughts flashed through my mind in the matter of seconds it took for Uulkan to hand me the mirror. And the result? What can I say? Wow, just wow! Even with the blading and colouring so fresh, I could immediately see I had finally got the brows I’ve always wanted and honestly couldn’t have been happier. At work the next morning, my colleagues, who had been pre-warned of the dire consequences of laughter, were fulsome in their praise saying what a big difference my new eyebrows make. At dinner with a friend a couple of days later, she asked what I had done. She knew there was something different and I was looking better but, so subtle was the effect, that she couldn’t put her finger on it – exactly the reaction I was looking for. Maybe you will think I am going over the top here, but I can truly say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY NEW BROWS. The tiny blade strokes actually do look just like real hair. Even now, two weeks later, every so often, I catch a passing glimpse of myself in a mirror and am amazed I now have eyebrows that are visible and shapely, even from a distance. And yes, I did get that haircut a couple of days later, so now I can show them off with pride. OHLALA

Voices

Skilled Vision Creative minds bring beauty and meaning to the world. Branding consultant, creative director and designer, Tina Prior, speaks with OHLALA about her career and gives some branding tips.

64

www.ohlalamag.net

“Brands need to talk less about themselves and more about the things that matter to the people they want to reach.” – Tina Prior OHLALA - When did you discover that you wanted to work in a creative area? Tina Prior - As soon as I could draw. I spent most of my high school years in the art rooms. OHLALA - Can you briefly discuss your career path, highlighting the main events? Tina - I’m Australian, and I studied Visual Communication at Sydney College of the Arts. While at university, I felt an affinity with British design, so I moved to London and worked there for almost 20 years. I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some of Europe’s leading brands, such as Nespresso, Vodafone, O2 Mobile, Unilever, BMW, Porsche, the British Royal Family and The British Foreign Office. Highlights include being promoted to Creative Director at award-winning branding agency Lambie-Nairn, and later being appointed as one of the first female creative directors to the Board of FutureBrand London. My work has been published in the British Design & Art Directors Awards Annual on three occasions. My involvement with Zain brought me to Bahrain, where I have been a resident for eight years and working as a branding consultant, creative director and designer. OHLALA - Branding is an essential aspect for big and small companies. What do you believe are the key elements that help create a strong identity? Tina - Today, we need to think of brands as 24/7 media channels that provide valuable information and entertainment to their target market. Gone are the days when brands were considered to be logos that appeared on tactical advertising campaigns. Customer loyalty and retention are at an all-time low because the power of choice is in the palm of the consumer. OHLALA - What should a brand consider when hiring a consultant to help them build their businesses? Tina - The most important factors to consider when hiring a consultant or agency are the following: 1. Who will actually be doing your work? The strategy, the creative concept, the design. Often at the larger agencies, initial meetings are carried out by agency management or directors but, in reality, the accounts managers or junior designers end up doing the work.

2. The most effective brand communications are a combination of science and art, so every creative idea needs to be underpinned by a clear strategy for reaching your target market. 3. Big ideas don’t require big budgets or big teams. The days of high-end film production and luxurious budgets are over. Responsiveness and relevance win engagement. OHLALA - What are the things that you think should be avoided? Tina - Brands need to talk less about themselves and more about the things that matter to the people they want to reach. OHLALA - What are your plans for the future of your company, Unthink? Tina - Having spent most of my career in large network agencies, I prefer to work as a consultant, so I can give clients my undivided attention. I have a flexible way of working and business model, where I am the key person in each project or account, but bring in other professionals from Bahrain, Dubai, London, Australia. These are experienced colleagues, with particular expertise. Collaboration is key, both with clients and other industry professionals. OHLALA - Bahrain is a place where many different cultures meet. Do you think this characteristic makes it a favourable or trickier environment for companies to thrive? Tina - Bahrain is evolving into a cultural melting pot, which has been the natural progression for all major cities in the world. The fusion of East and West is culturally enriching and offers more business opportunities. OHLALA - What are the things you like the most about Bahrain? Tina - Arabic design and culture are fascinating to me – from Arabic calligraphy to textiles, fashion, ceramics and jewellery. I see the dichotomy between a small population and a group of highly educated, well-travelled people who do business all over the world. Extraordinary! My perfect day in Bahrain would consist of breakfast at The Green Bar Cafe at Bahrain Fort, followed by the Annual Bahrain Fine Arts Exhibition or a wander through Bahrain Museum.

Homes

he living room is known as the most important room in the home, besides the bedroom. It’s the middle ground between the outside and in, your private and public life. It’s where you read and watch television with the family while slouching on the couch, but it’s also where you welcome your guests and look dashing and presentable. And with the coming of summer and the lifting of all restrictions, it’s time to think about rejuvenating this crucial space. We spoke to Sophio Jokhadze of Sophio Jokhadze Interior Design to give you the best advice.

Desperate Measures Being indoors for two years has seen the living room being converted into a myriad of other spaces, including the office, the exercise room, and the mini playground for the children. And much of that is here to stay. Indeed, as we are slowly getting back to pre-pandemic norms, an attitude of embracing the new and more flexible hybrid lifestyle carries on. Hence, we need to think differently about how to adjust.

Lay it All Out “The living room reflects the personality and lifestyle of inhabitants and, as a shared space, it’s important to design it properly,” says Sophio, who believes the most important thing to consider is the layout. “Every space has a limit; it’s all about priorities and balance. Space itself dictates what to include and how to arrange items. For every living room, comfortable seating and the right size television with the right distance from the seating area are important to consider,”she adds.

“When demand is to have more things or activities in one space, I believe more storage solutions need to be considered. Sometimes rearranging the whole space or building hidden storage solutions, can solve the problem. And when that is not enough, transformable furniture and furniture with storage are a plus. “To add an office space in a living room, for instance, select a table that is not too wide and can work as a console or sofa table. You can also invest in a sofa-cum-bed, or a sofa with storage drawers, as well as decorative boxes and baskets as storage solutions. But remember not to overcrowd the room. Space is luxury,” Sophio reflects on this matter. Comfort is Key Speaking of sofas, these are probably the most important items in the living room. They are fluffy, they are soft and, most importantly, they are comfortable, which is exactly what we look for in a living room. “When buying a sofa, it is crucial to check the seating height, the depths of the couch and the distance to the back, based on your preferences. If the sofa is deep, it may require you to get more cushions, if it is too low, it may not be too comfortable. The most important part of the living room is the seating area, so make sure to take your time and invest in the right pieces. “My personal preference for a living room is to use an L-shaped sofa combined with a few armchairs, which I believe gives more comfortable and diverse seating options,” adds the interior designer. Screen Time The television has, over the decades, become a key accessory in the living room. And due to its large size, it’s even more imperative to think carefully about where to place it.

“Consider a longer wall where you can create a unit by placing the television in the centre of a wall and shelves on one or both sides. The wall with the television creates an accent in the room. You can consider a special finish or different shades of paint to add to the aesthetic. Additionally, hanging the television on the wall can save space for a console where you can place speakers and décor items. On the other hand, placing the television on a console means you can move it around in the future. It’s all about personal choice,” says Sophio. Blinded by the Light For curtains and blinds, the interior designer recommends having two layers for more flexibility. A blackout can help block the sunlight during the day if you want to watch some television or create a cosy space, and a thinner fabric can be great as they allow light to enter the room while providing you with some privacy. Curtains give a classier look, while blinds give the room a more modern feel. Whatever you choose, she recommends having a remote control setting for the ultimate comfort. In terms of lighting, it’s essential to use different types. “Consider having table lamps, floor lamps and maybe some accent wall lights, as well as dimmable ceiling lights,” says Sophio. Accessorize A living room would not be complete without accessories. Not only do they beautify the space, but they also make it more welcoming and add that little bit of extra spark and shine. “Accessories add accent and interest, and they can fill up shelf space and corners. Pay attention to the colour scheme, size, functionality and materials,” she adds, recommending art pieces and vases, as well as plants. For larger spaces, add a big decorative rug.

TREASURE

ISLANDS Summer is finally here, and Amal Sarhan discovers some sunny islands for you to explore.

TRAVEL

Escapes

W

ith the onset of the hottest time of the year and the simmering heat, we head towards the Mediterranean for sunshine and cooler waters. But instead of going to the mainland, we head south to the islands that bejewel its neckline to discover the offshore paradises of some major European countries.

MALTA

Malta

Known as one of the tiniest nations in the world and home to luscious beaches, this paradisial island is brimming with things to do. We start at Mdina, the old district and ancient capital of the island, the name of which is familiar to us due to its Arabic root meaning ‘city’. Entering this part of the island is like going back in time. Vast residences and high walls meander through the area, with small beckoning doors leading to expansive houses. Head towards Valetta, the island nation’s capital and a popular location. Visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens built in the 1560s with magnificent archways and a flower-ringed fountain in the middle. The gardens are the highest point of the old city walls, with a terrace offering spectacular views of the Grand Harbour, the ‘Three Cities’ of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, and the shipyards below. Any beautiful city will have those little nooks and crannies that are simply charming. Merchant Street is the place for that in Valletta. For foodies, head down to Republic Street, crammed with petite eateries. The Triton Fountain is a big square where one can spend time strolling around. One of Valletta’s gems is the St. John’s Cathedral Museum, a majestic 16th-century monument considered one of the finest exemplars of Baroquestyle architecture in the world. Another gem is the Casa Rocca Piccola, the 16th-century palace of a Maltese noble family with highly luxurious interiors and intricate furnishings, fit to dazzle the richest of sorts. The Teatru Manoel is another magnificent building with beautiful architecture, built in the 18th century. Catch Othello or Requiem for Juliet on May 13 and 27, respectively. For museum and art lovers, visit the Museum of Fine Arts, the Malta Postal Museum and Arts Hub, the National Museum of Archaeology, The Knights Hospitallers, The Museum of Russian-Maltese History or the Palazzo de la Salle.

SARDINIA

Sardinia, an Italian island to the west of the mainland, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Visited as a summer destination, it is well-known for its pristine beaches, clear waters and majestic coastal areas. The island is also known for its Nuraghe, ancient edifices built during the Nuragic age. Cagliari, the capital, is a beautiful old town mazed with colourful houses and dotted with palm trees. Located on the island’s southern coast, it is also home to the Spiaggia del Poetto, one of the longest beaches in Italy at 7km – for those who want to head straight into the water. The Il Castello district, in particular, is fascinating, lined with beautiful architectural residences and towers, all of which belonged to the city’s aristocrats. While you are there, pass through the Via Stretta, one of the narrowest streets in town and a quiet little treasure with blooming flowers and plants. Stroll through Quartiere Villanova for a walk through a paradise of green and visit the Palazzo Regio, the royal palace built during the Aragonese occupation. Il Duomo di Cagliari is a 13th-century Roman Catholic church built by the Pisans of the Pisa Republic. The church was added to, and renovated over the centuries and incorporates Pisan, Baroque, Gothic and Romanesque styles. The centre attraction is the ambo of Ambo de Guglielmo, a pair of pulpits built in the 12th century. Next, head to the island of Saint Antonio, but don’t forget to pass by the salt pans. As you reach the island, stop at the capital, Saint Antonio City, and visit the Linen Museum as well as the Ethnographic Museum to learn about the rich culture. Another stop is the Museo del Mare e dei Maestri d’Ascia, a museum of shipwrights, and the Catacomb di Saint Antioco. Visit the Villaggio Ipogeo Grotte, a labyrinthine underground village made of previously Punic tombs reused as homes by the lower classes of the island as it got repopulated. 80

CORSICA AJACCIO

Corsica is a French island threaded with mountainous regions and outlined with petite coastal towns. Apart from its azure waters and sandy beaches, it is most well-known for being the birthplace of the infamous Napoleon Bonaparte, who led the opposition in the French revolution and thereafter became the head of the French Republic. It is ironic to discover how one of the fiercest and most dominating figures in world history could come from such a peaceful and paradisial island, is it not? Stop by Propriano and grab some lunch in any of the restaurants on Napoleon III Avenue. You can make a short visit to the church nearby and admire its bright colours and architecture. If you are looking to cool off, head down the road to the Plage de Propriano, then aim for the city of Ajaccio. Visit the ancient citadel on the beach and catch the Petit Train d’Ajaccio for a 45-minute ride around the city. Don’t forget to stop by the Maison Napoleon to learn about the emperor’s childhood on the island. For art lovers interested in some quiet artistic contemplation, head towards the Museu Fesch, a palace museum established by Napoleon’s uncle featuring a range of European art. The Guides du Palais, YellowKorner Ajaccio, and Galerie L’Academie are all impressive artistic treasure boxes to explore. Stop by the Chapelle Imperiale to enjoy its exquisite interiors of light blue and gold to end your visit.

THAT’S AMORE An Italian food affair is what OHLALA’s Editor and her dining companions experienced at Meisei Italia.

M

eisei has been a celebrated dining spot at block 338 for many years and has established itself as one of the best and well-prized Japanese Fusion destinations on the island. Over the years, they kept innovating and now, this beloved eatery has created a whole new concept – Meisei Italia. Overall, Meisei is spread over three floors. The ground floor is where the Japanese creations come to life, and the rooftop is the place to enjoy a great lounge experience. The Italian concept, Meisei Italia, has taken over the first floor. The atmosphere is welcoming with comfy chairs and we sat in an area near a window that allowed us to peek inside the kitchen. We were welcomed by Chef Fabrizio Molendi, an authentic ‘Chef Italiano’ from the Tuscany region, who created the Meisei Italia menu. You can clearly sense that he is passionate about cooking, but mostly, he is enthusiastic about his key ingredients coming straight from his homeland. Tuna is from Sicily, pasta from Napoli, burrata from Puglia, olive oil from Tuscany, and the list continues. Traditionally, the famous focaccia is medium-thick, soft and crunchy outside. However, throughout Tuscany, you can also find a thin and crispy version, and that’s the type that Chef Fabrizio served us. The baked dough was paired with delicious olives and caperberries and simply baked with salt and olive oil.

After eating every crumb of this delicious bread, we refreshed our palates with two types of salad, the Finocchio e Pompelmo and Nizzarda. The first is composed of fennel, grapefruit, almonds and honey citronette dressing. While Nizzarda, a French dish (Niçoise salad) with an Italian twist, comes with iceberg lettuce, eggs, cherry tomato, cucumber, Taggiasca olives, tuna (from Sicily), anchovies, basil and citronette. I don’t have the habit of eating fennel; however, the salad was crispy, well-balanced, and spot-on. Meanwhile, my dining companions fought over the tuna chunks in the Nizzarda salad. The next dish is a must-try in any Italian diner – pizza! We had the Funghi Freschi with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, basil and a generous amount of fresh mushroom, and Napoli, with tomato cream, garlic, oregano and anchovies. The dough was thin and crispy, yet soft even with plenty of toppings (I can’t really explain this magic). The tomato cream was a spectacle apart, it had such a smooth texture and was not acidic at all. The first antipasti was the Vitello Tonnato Antico: veal, tuna, capers, anchovies and eggs, a mix of complex flavours that agreed to work well together. The other was the Polpo Grigliato Sulla Crema Di Patate, made with octopus, cream of potato, paprika and tomato confit. According to my dining companions, it was cooked to perfection and the star dish of the night. Authentic Italian restaurants have Primi (first course) and Secondi (second course) on their menus. The first is a selection of pasta dishes, and the second brings one type of protein as the main ingredient. Our Primi options were the Calamarata Sulla Crema Di Pomodoro and Linguine Sul Mare. Calamarata is a thick tube of pasta that was surrounded by a sauce that mixes cherry, Datterini and San Marzano tomatoes, garlic and basil. The Linguine pasta had prawns, mussels, squid, and sea bass accompanied by Pachino tomatoes (a tomato species specifically grown in Sicily). Each seafood sample was cooked to a perfect texture, and the dish had the right hint of the sea to it.

84

www.ohlalamag.net

The Secondi were Branzino all’Acqua Pazza, a traditionally baked sea bass with an Italian touch of tomato, garlic, basil, celery, capers and Taggiasca olives. And the Costata Di Manzo Alla Fiorentina, a very tender Black Angus beef sliced, seasoned with salt, pepper and thyme and accompanied by baked potatoes. There was not even one slice left – it disappeared from the plate as fast as it arrived. To end this gastronomic journey, we had three desserts. The Italians, Tiramisu (the well-known ‘dolce’ made with mascarpone and coffee) and Panna Cotta, a vanilla dessert served with strawberry sorbetto. And the Spanish Crema Catalana, a lighter version of the French Crème Brûlée. They were all delightful, but the Panna Cotta always hits a soft spot for me, and at Meisei Italia, it was light and left a delicate vanilla taste. Italian cuisine is humble and straightforward. However, even a tomato sauce has its secrets. You need to mix the correct types of tomatoes and cook them in different ways to achieve the ideal texture and flavour. And that’s what I believe is the biggest trick of Italian cuisine. The dishes are simple, but the quality of ingredients and patience make this food so unique when prepared by the hands of true connoisseurs. If you feel like stepping into an authentic Italian restaurant without leaving Bahrain, Meisei Italia will transport you through an explosion of original flavours. Giving Your Body a Break

Inspired by the end of Ramadan, Victoria Kruse, a wellness mentor, brings tips on intermittent fasting and a delicious energy bar recipe.

A

86

www.ohlalamag.net

s I sit here writing from the Maldives, I’m thinking about the lessons we can take from Ramadan (or ‘Ramazan’ as we call it over here) that has just finished. Regardless of whether you have any religious or spiritual affiliation, Ramadan is a time of fasting and reflection. And these are concepts that have gained a lot of traction in the wellness community. Intermittent fasting in itself is nothing new, I’d like to talk about how it’s been embraced by the wellness community and its benefits for your body and mind. In Ramadan, the fasting lasts from sunrise to sunset. The duration depends upon your location. In Bahrain, as in the Maldives, that means around 11.5 hours of fasting. With intermittent fasting, the non-eating period tends to be a little longer – up to 16 hours of fasting is recommended. However, unlike during Ramadan, you can still drink water or any zero-calorie drinks during the no-food period. If you fast for 10 to 16 hours, you give your body the opportunity to turn its fat storage into energy, releasing ketones into the bloodstream to encourage weight loss. However, it is essential that you do it correctly. Here are some of my tips for successful intermittent fasting: - Don’t undo all the good work you’ve done by overloading your body with junk food when you break your fast. If you load up on high-calorie food during the non-fasting window, you probably won’t notice any weight loss. - Make every calorie count by picking nutrient-dense foods that are rich in protein, fibre and ‘good’ fats, such as fish, nuts, eggs, avocados and lean meat. This will help regulate your blood sugar and ensure you’re not depriving yourself of nutrients. - Break your fast gently at first with some small portions of healthy food. Otherwise, you might feel a bit queasy after fasting for so long. - If you know you’re easily tempted by unhealthy snacks, use them up, put them out of sight or give them away before attempting to fast so you won’t lose your determination. - Avoid strenuous activities – light exercise like yoga is perfect. - Stay hydrated, drinking plenty of water. People doing intermittent fasting often find fasting overnight easier since they are asleep for a big chunk of the fasting period and therefore not feeling hunger pangs or thinking about food.

Date Macadamia Bars Dates are a traditional way to break fast, and they are very high in sugars. Blending them with good fats from nuts and coconut oil gives your body long-lasting fuel, and the salt helps to rehydrate. 1 cup Medjool dates ¾ cup macadamia nuts ½ cup ground almond ¼ tsp salt ½ tsp ground ginger ¼ cup coconut oil ¼ tsp sea salt flakes for topping (optional) Place all ingredients into a food processor and blend them until smooth. Place them into a 20x10cm tin pan and press firmly. Sprinkle sea salt flakes on top. Refrigerate until firm and cut into bars. @victoria_maldiveswellness

THE 2022 GENESIS G70 SPORT GENESIS HAVE SECURED THEIR STATUS AS REAL CONTENDERS IN THE LUXURY SPORT SEDAN SEGMENT.

A

s recently as 2017, South Korean car giant, Hyundai Motor Group, launched the Genesis brand, with its first standalone model, the G90. Created to go head-to-head with already highly successful luxury car brands including Mercedes, BMW and Lexus, its creators had high hopes for this new label. Today, Genesis seems to have established itself as a real contender, already having produced popular SUVs like the GV70 and GV80, luxury sedans including the G80, along with sports sedans such as the G70, and even an all-electric crossover in the form of the GV60. This month, thanks to the team at Genesis Bahrain, OHLALA magazine got the opportunity to thoroughly inspect, as well as to test drive, the 2022 Genesis G70 Sport. EXTERIOR Always excited to experience something new, we were eager to lay eyes on the new G70. With its athletic lines and robust stance, this vehicle gives a first impression of both elegance and power. Even when turned off, this car looks like it’s mere moments away from surging forward. The first striking exterior feature to capture our attention was the chrome Crest Grille. Inspired by the Genesis emblem, the Crest Grille, along with the double lines of the LED Quad Lamps, set the tone for rest of this beautifully crafted vehicle; the Genesis badge itself sitting like a jewel in front of the elongated hood. At the flanks, the bold lines of the G70 extend effortlessly from front to rear. Underscoring the short overhangs are 19inch alloy wheels, complete with G-Matrix rims and red brake callipers. New air vents, designed for aero efficiency, work with the overall aerodynamic nature of the exterior design, to reduce wind resistance. A low-slung roof featuring a wide sunroof contributes to the stylish look of this sporty sedan. At the back end, LED Quad Lamps, a fashionable rear diffuser and dual exhaust tips coated in black chrome, finish of the external design in style. The Genesis name is also proudly displayed on the boot lid in large silver text, letting everyone know who just left them behind.

“This beast of a machine can surge from 0-100km/h in under five seconds and produces a top speed of almost 270km/h.” www.ohlalamag.net

INTERIOR Turning our attention to the interior, we were welcomed by the distinctive red, multi-adjustable, sport-styled seating of the driver-orientated cabin. The stunning interior of the G70 is available in various colours, allowing owners to put their personal stamp on the design. The flawlessly crafted steering wheel, complete with system controls, felt perfect in hand, increasing our desire to get out onto the road. Upmarket materials, garnishes and finishes have been used throughout the G70, solidifying the model’s deluxe status. Our favourite design detail would have to be the swirl patterns located on the aluminium trims of the metal floor pedals. Space wise, there is plenty of leg, head and shoulder room in the front, with the back offering slightly tighter quarters for passengers. However, the ergonomic seat design provides a comfortable ride nonetheless. Storage wise, the G70’s boot offers 10.5cu.ft of space, enough to fit two medium suitcases. This area is greatly increased with the 60/40 split, rear seating folded flat. TECHNOLOGY The G70’s updated infotainment system now features a 10.25-inch, highdefinition touchscreen display, that protrudes from the otherwise smooth surface of the dashboard. The display can be split to show several features simultaneously, including GPS, media and weather. This infotainment system is not only compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but automatically updates, ensuring your version has the very latest multimedia software and map information. Additional features include a 12.3-inch 3D Cluster, a built-in wireless charging pad, a head-up display and an exceptional sound system boasting 15 Lexicon speakers and Quantum Logic Surround technology.

92

www.ohlalamag.net

PERFORMANCE Making our way out onto the roads, we could instantly feel the car’s powertrain urging us to press down on the pedal. The G70 Sport houses a 3.3-litre, V6 Twin-Turbo, petrol engine that produces up to 365hp, and 376lb-ft of torque. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, this beast of a machine can surge from 0-100km/h in under five seconds and produces a top speed of almost 270km/h. Not only did we find the G70 Sport to be uber responsive and full of power, it also proved to be one smooth ride. With four driving modes to choose from, namely Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Sport+, this all-wheel drive vehicle will handle everything from a school drop to a competitive lap around a racetrack. A combination of precise steering, great traction control, a finely tuned suspension and the Brembo Braking System, all ensured we were always in complete control of the driving experience. In truth, it was hard not to enjoy the envious glances of other motorists. SAFETY & DRIVER ASSISTANCE FEATURES Safety and assistance wise, Genesis have made sure to include a vast array of features, specifically designed to ensure your safety. These include, but are not limited to, forward-collision warning, auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, Electronic Stability Control, a 10-airbag system and so much more. One feature we have to give special mention to, as this was the very first time we experienced this technology, is the novel Blind-Spot View Monitor. When you signal left to change lanes, the rev counter on the instrument cluster turns into a screen, providing a clear view of your left side blind spot. The same happens when signalling right. This works through the use of the surround view cameras located on the bottom of the side mirrors. OUR VERDICT The Genesis G70 Sport is an exceptional luxury motor vehicle. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but offers comfort, power, precision and impressive technology. For more information or to book a test drive of your own, please call Genesis Bahrain on 1712 1121. @genesis_bahrain

My Precious

Diamonds are considered a girl’s best friend. However, jewellery has been part of humanity much longer than Marilyn Monroe’s iconic line in the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Broadway production. As we all know well, accessories have the power to transform a look and add character to an outfit, expressing our unique personalities. Jewellery is acknowledged as a universal form of adornment that has been spotted since prehistoric times. Men and women have been wearing earrings, rings, necklaces and more in almost every culture and region of the world. Even before any communication amongst them was as easy as nowadays or even possible when it comes to many, many years ago. It shows a deep connection between human beings and objects that they consider precious or that are filled with significance. For many centuries, jewellery has been used as an emblem of status, wealth, nobility, rank, religion, and other representations. Gemstones can also be used as tokens with intrinsic meanings. Diamonds, for instance, represent purity, unity and love. Ruby shows power and prosperity, while emerald is filled with hope and rebirth. They are likewise linked to the zodiac signs and are known as birthstones – wearing them is thought to bring good luck and protection. Wearing beautiful jewels and gems definitely represents more than profound social expressions. They can be a symbol of femininity, elegance and confidence. No matter the reason why you choose to wear certain jewellery (maybe an emotional heirloom or you might be looking for a best friend?), these adornments are part of our lives, and they will certainly not go anywhere – anytime soon. Choose your favourite piece and embellish yourself.
