Fiamma’s Muse Muses of Salvatore Ferragamo’s creative director Massimiliano Giornetti, the female generations of the Ferragamo family are the inspiration behind the new iconic handbag, Fiamma – a masterpiece of leather craft.

Fiamma is named after Salvatore’s late daughter Fiamma Ferragamo, the house’s leather accessories and shoe designer for almost 40 years who founded the iconic shoe Vara. The semicircular top handle, designed in a range of five variant sizes, incorporates a functional pocket fastened with a lock that recalls the Gancio, the eternal symbol of Ferragamo’s history and dedication to modern design and luxurious craftsmanship. A Voice for the

World’s Children The iconic Lebanese singer Magida El Roumi partners with Bulgari to become the brand’s first Middle Eastern Humanitarian Ambassador in support of global children’s charity, Save the Children. Ohlala! finds out more...

With donations totalling USD30 million as of this writing, Bulgari’s campaign in championing children’s causes has proved hugely successful. The amount thus far, exceeds the ambitious objective set in 2009, the year when the partnership began with Bulgari and Save the Children.

In their bid to heighten awareness about underprivileged children throughout the Arab countries, the legendary Lebanese soprano and international icon, Magida El Roumi, has accepted to become the first Middle Eastern Humanitarian Ambassador for the campaign.

For her role, Magida – who went to the world’s second largest refugee camp – Za’atari in Jordan last month, visited the charity’s food distribution points, youth centres and sports activities. The singer also saw the Rainbow Kindergarten, one of three pre-schools built by Save the Children with Bulgari’s support, which teaches 6,000 children aged three to five.

“I will strive to bring joy to my surroundings and to the people who are in need of it.

Everything that’s happening is a crime in every meaning of the word. I feel that I have a mission (on her role as Ambassador) and my appointment is for a cause that I truly believe in. I will travel the extra mile and do what I can regardless of the size of my mission,” Magida tells Ohlala!

To raise funds for the initiative, Bulgari have launched a special collection, inspired by their B.zero1 jewellery line, which comprises a custom36

Bulgari’s donation is benefiting and will benefit around 600,000 unprivileged children in 23 countries: Albania, Afghanistan, Australia, Bosnia

– Herzegovina, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Indonesia, India, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, Montenegro, Japan, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Southern Sudan, Uganda, UK and the US. In all countries where Bulgari funds programs, Save the Children works closely with local education authorities and governments, as well as promotes the participation of local communities.

The partnership’s vision for education is that “every child receives a good quality education and learns the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the twenty-first century.”

A special focus is given to teacher training in all education projects funded by Bulgari and to date, over 20,000 teachers have received training worldwide in more than 1,200 schools.

Most coveted Autumn-Winter piece Out of a set list of nominations, my most coveted Autumn Winter piece would have to be Diesel’s Fur Mohawk beanie. Unfortunately they are a seasonal showcase item; an item that isn’t in stores (sighs internally).

One item in your closet that you can’t live without That would currently be my white Lacoste tennis trainers, they add a minimal, yet chic touch to an outfit or look.

Fashion Icon My fashion icon would be a blend of Bryan Boy and Prince Fahad Al Saud (aka Yolo Fahad).

The blend emphasises on the bold statement pieces that each individual tends to pull off.

They both manage to present themselves boldly while looking dapper, and tres chic.

Most admired designer John Galliano hands down. Creating an empire of Dior, and then having to leave it due to anti Semitic comments. But that didn’t stop him, he’s now the creative director of the house of Margiela. He’s iconic, very intact with his detailed work. He evokes that inner doubt or inner question that one may have towards art.

Of Sparkles & Shine In an interview with Ohlala!, Waleed Kooheji, general manager of the renowned jewellery maison Kooheji Jewellery, gives an insight into the industry and what has to be kept in mind when buying jewellery.

First, tell us the inside story – how did Kooheji Jewellery begin?

Waleed Kooheji. It started when my father traded jewellery in a small town in Al Khobar, KSA in 1959, where the oil refinery was and there were several camps in the area. The business went very well, and in 1970, the company began selling gold in Bahrain. The whole look and feel and direction of the business changed in 1977, when the company decided to sell only jewellery pieces ­– mostly diamonds – of high-quality and design. We specialise in wedding sets – of which there are about 300 sets in each of our shops; along with pendants, rings, etc. We have three stores here in Bahrain, and three in KSA, with expansion plans already planned for both countries.

What has contributed to the continued growth of your company?

WK. We attribute our success to a number of reasons. Foremost of which is trust and the strong relationships we have built with our clients. One cannot put a price on this – when you love your customers, they love you back. We have earned their loyalty this way.

Any tips when buying jewellery?

WK. Buy with investment in mind. In the case of diamonds for instance, I recommend that you buy larger pieces and don’t skimp on the quality. This assures better value appreciation in the long run and the piece will also be easy to trade if you wish, as diamonds are very high value commodities.

Make sure to ask for a certificate, and look for the standard 4C’s of diamonds – carat, cut, clarity and colour.

What does “fashion” mean to you?

SD. Fashion is for everyday and everywhere.

Fashion is to be elegant in a natural way.

Define luxury…

SD. I think that above all, quality of materials and craftsmanship make a true luxury object.

Why choose fashion? Why Longchamp?

SD. As you know Longchamp is a family business created by my grandfather 66 years ago and currently managed by my parents, my two brothers and I. Therefore I’ve always been exposed to Longchamp all my life and, as a girl and after as a woman, I have always been interested in the leather bag design therefore the idea of joining the company in 1995 came naturally after my own experience at Bonpoint.

What is the brand DNA of Longchamp?

SD. Today Longchamp is an international luxury brand that has maintained momentum and energy across the decades. Our brand’s key words are family, quality and creativity. We have managed through the years to keep a good combination of those and our purpose is to continue to create and take risks.

What kind of woman invests in Longchamp?

SD. Longchamp is not only for the French or European women but for all the women everywhere in the world as the brand is already present in more than 100 countries. The customers appreciate Longchamp for the creativity, modernity and the good quality that is continually renewed.

The Longchamp woman is an elegant woman with French flair, self-confident and brave to face daily challenges from work to family. When I design a new collection, I always have in mind a woman who is active, modern and urban and wants to have fun.

Who are your favourite fashion designers?

SD. Alber Elbaz and Bouchra Jarrar for their dream dresses, Jeremy Scott for its humour and creativity, Mary Katrantzou for her unique talent for printings and Giambattista Valli for his natural elegance.

What inspires you?

SD. My inspiration comes from everywhere; it can be a piece of art, a movie, a landscape, a woman.

How do you select your materials?

SD. We select the highest quality leathers developed by the best tanneries to ensure a level of quality that has been the brand’s motto since its early years. The different Longchamp workshops have maintained throughout the years the same quest for perfect finishing details and materials, making each bag and accessory a unique piece of Longchamp’s know-how. We develop each season new leathers, new canvas, new prints created exclusively by Longchamp. Longchamp is distinguished by the French State with the label “Living Heritage Company”, a recognition rewarding French companies for the excellence of their traditional and industrial skills.

What’s the inspiration behind this season?

SD. For Autumn 2014 collection, I drew inspiration from the Parisienne, a universal muse and style icon defined by her creative spirit, her independence and her natural elegance. As you know, the River Seine divides Paris in two and the Parisienne switches from one bank to the other according to mood and moment and this collection has two themes: the left bank and the right bank spirits.

What are the stand out pieces?

SD. Regarding handbag collections, the new Le Pliage Héritage bag in its luxury version with the leopard print on it is one of my favourite. As for ready-to-wear, the short egg-shaped coat is a real stand out.

What themes can be seen next season?

SD. Freshness and light are the keywords of the Longchamp’s Spring 2015 collection. Vibrant, luminous, optimistic, this is a season dedicated to a woman who lives each day to the full. Two contrasting themes emerge: a palette of cool pastels as pale pink, aquamarine and yellow on one side and bold, saturated shades of red, coral and deep blue on the other side. www.ohlala-magazine.com

What are the signature pieces?

SD. Regarding the handbag collection, the three new versions of Le Pliage Héritage (Mini, Neon and Luxury), the stunning new colour combinations and new designs of the line Longchamp 2.0 and the new line Surf & The City in canvas printed with a trompe-l’oeil motif of knotted ropes in a nautical spirit. As for ready-to-wear, a beautiful sophisticated leopard-print blouson in baby calfskin.

Tell us more about the collaboration with Sarah Morris and specifically the limited edition Le Pliage bag?

SD. The House of Longchamp has turned to

the artist Sarah Morris to reinterpret its iconic Le Pliage bag in celebration of the line’s 20th anniversary. Sarah worked with Longchamp on the new collection for over a year, providing the luxury house with challenges to recreate an artwork on leather and nylon in order to arrive at a vibrant, elegant range of bags that celebrate the spirit of Le Pliage and Longchamp. The Sarah Morris collection comprises a colourful Limited Edition Le Pliage bag, inspired by one of the artist’s paintings from the “Rio” series. This leather shopper, produced in just 125 examples, was created in a specific shape: a square, which evokes the canvases that Sarah Morris normally uses for her creations. This bag is crafted in a smooth and sumptuous calfskin, which is extremely supple, allowing it to be folded. All examples are signed by the artist.

As H&M collaborates with designer Alexander Wang, Ohlala! gets the inside scoop on fashion functionality, with their collection of funky permformance sportwear.

What influences and inspires you?

AW. From the beginning, my label has grown very organically, following our instincts in everything that we do. I hope that we can continue to grow in this way. It’s important for me to be as passionate about my job as the day I started my label. I never take my work for granted, and challenge myself everyday to push harder and to go further.

I’m always influenced by things that are very real. It’s about the pieces that you know you want but can’t find, everyday things like T-shirts or jeans that are elevated with wit, humour and experimentation. I love functionality, and for the Alexander Wang X H&M collection, I was inspired by the fabrics and technology of performance and sportswear. To me it’s the most advanced, because these are garments that are worn when the body is in its most active state, and have to outperform and outlast. It was so exciting to work with these fabrics and technologies on this collection with H&M, both for their look and their functionality.

Tell us about the collaboration with H&M… AW. I’ve been an admirer of the H&M designer collaborations for some time. It’s not just the products that they create, it’s also the whole way that they communicate, and turn it into a global event. I’ve attended some of their launches in New York, and talked with Margareta van den Bosch often. This year seemed the perfect time to do it, especially 48

since it’s the tenth anniversary of the designer collaborations, and I’m the first American designer to work with them on a collection.

Can you tell us more about the collection?

AW. The Alexander Wang X H&M collection is based on performance and sportswear, whether it’s pieces for working out, for protection from the elements, or for wearing as part of your normal wardrobe. I personally live in gym clothes, and when you look on the streets, you see people from across the generations and in all walks of life wearing sportswear at all times of the day. I’ve made my first ever athletic performance pieces, such as quick-dry running tops with a hidden message that’s only revealed when worn, and black running shorts with WANG in silver visible through mesh. There are also pieces that take inspiration from sportswear, such as the cutaway scuba dress with multi-straps, or the WANG elastic sports bra. I’m interested in new techniques, and I love pieces such as the sweatshirt that’s foam injected to create a 3D croc pattern, and also the sweatshirts that are embossed with WANG. Then there are the outerwear pieces, which are perfect for urban survival, such as the windproof and water resistant parka that’s seamless welded for a really clean finish. There’s also a full range of accessories, and also an Objects collection of pieces that give the full breadth of the Alexander Wang lifestyle. www.ohlala-magazine.com

H&M is known for its union with famous designers, what’s unique about this one?

MARGARETA VON DEN BOSCH. Each season, we like to surprise our customers with something unexpected, different from anything we’ve done before. Alexander Wang is not only the first American designer we’ve ever collaborated with, he’s also the youngest. It’s great to be celebrating our anniversary with a young designer whose work is looking towards the future of fashion.

Is H&M involved in the design process?

MB. We give the designers as much creative freedom as possible because we want to get the true essence of their brand. After discussion, our role is to turn the collection into reality, sourcing the fabrics and techniques to create the pieces. It’s hard work, but very rewarding and also lots of fun.

What does H&M want to achieve?

MB. H&M’s mission is to bring fashion and quality to everyone at the best price. That’s also the motivation behind our designer collaborations – to show that good fashion isn’t just a question of price. We want to give our customers the chance to experience the designer’s world. Each season it is like a celebration of fashion, with the chance for fashion lovers around the world to get some of the most amazing designs all at an affordable price.

You’ve taken H&M to all new highs as a brand – could you tell us what’s next?

MB. There are always so many new developments at H&M. It’s been really exciting to see the launch of H&M Studio, especially with the show we held during Paris Fashion Week, and the launch of the newly expanded H&M Sport. There are many developments too with our move towards more sustainable clothing with our Conscious Collection.

There are various big plans coming up – we’ll let you know as soon as we’re ready to announce them!

Process of creation

DANIELA ANDRIER

Translating Tomas Maier’s vision of a meditative seaside interlude into a unique olfactive experience evoking the essence of the Italian coastline, master perfumer Daniela Andrier precisely illustrates the elements into different accords – the result – the complex and the alluring fragrance, Bottega Veneta Knot.

The collaboration

Daniela Andrier. When I read the story that Tomas Maier [creative director at the Italian luxury lifestyle brand Bottega Veneta] wrote as the inspiration, I immediately thought of my childhood. This story really touched me because it revived some cherished memories.

I used to spend my summers close to the part of Italy that Tomas Maier talks about in the story. I remember the Tuscany region, the seashore, the terrazzo floors; the heat coming from outside, mixed with the freshness of the sea, this whole ambiance.

All those things that had their own particular smell that I could never forget: the clean white sheets smelling of lavender soap, the mothballs, which have this really particular smell, sort of clean, hot/cold, indole smell. It is a very complex smell to describe but at the same time extremely particular and unforgettable.

The structure

DA. In general, I prefer to work on short structures. I don’t like to use more than I need, this is how I was trained in fragrance www.ohlala-magazine.com

DA. The real creation is done with the first idea.

It is difficult for me to explain how I come up with a fragrance. Those are very fragile moments because I am 100 percent in the story. And everything becomes very evident. If the story touches me, if I like it, it becomes like an instinct, an intuition, it comes naturally and it becomes impossible afterwards, to explain why I did what I did and how.

A fragrance is such a poetic way to transmit things. For me, creating a perfume is my way of communicating, to tell a story I love.

Can you tell us about the material you like to use and how you like to use ingredients to develop fragrances?

DA. I don’t have favourite ingredients, that is too limiting for a perfumer. I guess a perfumer has “periods” during which they use one or more ingredients more than others. I’m always looking for new inspiration. It’s about making new associations of ingredients. In this case, for Knot, all the ingredients came together to create what I would call this “poetic alchemy”.

What touched you about the story?

DA. Besides the olfactive descriptions, what I loved about the story is its mystery. In this story, there is a wait, almost suspense. I liked the ‘unexpected’ aspect of the story. Who is that woman? What’s going to happen to her? Is the bed made?

Unmade? Is she alone? I love that unexpected, mysterious aspect of the story and I feel like this is what the fragrance reveals.

How would you describe the Bottega Veneta perfumery?

DA. Bottega Veneta is a perfumery House that tells a poetic story, but not one that is expected, or already heard.

What is specific about Knot?

DA. Although it is sensual and very feminine, Knot is luminous, fresh. It differentiates itself in the sense that it doesn’t carry a stereotyped vision of feminine sensuality, but something more glowing, ageless.

Do you see a Bottega Veneta signature?

DA. The fact that it is always Tomas Maier who is writing the story can be considered as the signature. We can see it as a common thread to all the Bottega Veneta fragrances.

Now, all Bottega Veneta fragrances are extremely different from one another, but what they have in common is that they all have their own identity; each one of them has a very recognisable signature, none of them following a trend.

First I take a five-minute soak in the 34°C pool to prep me for the treatment that lay ahead. I was then led to the Turkish Hammam baths – deemed the largest on the island. The lights were dim and the atmosphere was relaxing with a really soothing scent in the air. Wrapped in a muslin robe, I lay on the warm marble slab as warm water was being poured down my entire body.

After a good scrubbing – from the face to the tips of your toes – this gets repeated and then you are methodically doused with fragrance infused-water designed to just make you melt into blissdom. The following vanilla hair treatment and honey mask left me feeling refreshed with a lingering fragrance on my now soft skin.

My therapist Betty recommended I dip myself in the cold pool. I hesitated only slightly (the pool’s temperature was set to 12°C) but then I very happily obliged. In I went for a two-second Signature Body Treatment:

Ingredients (serves 10} 800 g White quinoa 20 Cherry tomatoes 800 g Baby spinach Half a bunch of Spring onions 200 ml Apple vinegar 400 ml Olive oil 800 g Gouda cheese 300 g Panko Breadcrumbs 200 g High quality dates (No pip) 50 g Pine nuts 2 Eggs 200 ml Balsamic reduction

Method Soak the quinoa in cold water for ten minutes, then gently cook quinoa in vegetable stock on a low heat for approximately 12 minutes, being careful not to overcook.

Strain and dress with a little olive oil, salt and pepper.

Slice the spring onions very finely and add to the cooked quinoa.

De-pit the dates and slice thinly while lightly toasting the pine kernels.

To prep the spinach carefully remove the stem from each leaf, this leaves you with a more delicate texture to the salad.

Cut the Gouda cheese into small cubes then dip in the egg wash and coat with panko bread crumbs.

Deep fry the coated Gouda cheese cubes till they have melted in the middle and are golden.

Halve the cherry tomatoes and lightly dress the spinach leaves with a mix of the apple vinegar and olive oil.

Plate your quinoa and top with the spinach and cherry tomatoes, place the crisp Gouda cheese cubes around the quinoa and garnish the plate with the sliced dates and toasted pine kernels.

Finally, finish with a touch of balsamic dressing.

So what’s new about the Series II? Design-wise, very little, as Rolls-Royce feel that their current creation is already as good as it can be, and only minor changes were required to freshen up the new model. They wouldn’t be wrong in thinking this way, as the Ghost has been the driving force behind a huge increase in total units sold for the brand worldwide since it was first released back in 2009.

However, the Series II does now feature the same impressive satelliteguided gearbox that was featured for the first time in the Wraith. This gearbox is fed information from the Sat-Nav to predict upcoming road types, such as motorway, country lane and twisting mountain road, for example, and calibrates the gearbox for optimum performance on that particular type of road.

Does it make a difference? We couldn’t tell you, as the technology is not about speed or power, but more about smoothness and refinement. Therefore, if you’ve noticed any change, the system has failed to do its job. We noticed nothing!

Billed as “a less formal, more contemporary and dynamic expression of Rolls-Royce luxury”, the Ghost represents the driver’s alternative to the Phantom, which is most often chauffer driven.

Having driven both we can definitely say that the Ghost is less formidable than the Phantom, being smaller in most dimensions,

and therefore more manageable.

We say ‘less formidable’, as the Ghost is still no compact car. At well over 17 feet long and almost six-and-a-half feet wide, it’s still bigger than other premium luxury barges like the S Class, A8 and the XJ. Powering the Ghost is Rolls Royce’s monstrous 6.6l twin-turbo V12, which puts out almost 600hp and 780Nm of torque, so despite weighing around two-and-ahalf tonnes (depending on bespoke custom options), it’s still no slouch. It’ll hit 100km/h in just five seconds, and reach a limited top speed of 250km/h.

The wonderful thing about British country lanes is the scenery. The notso-wonderful thing about them is the traffic. Get stuck behind a slow moving car, and you could be part of a tailback for many miles. Which we were. For almost an hour.

At this point, we gave up telling ourselves that we were still enjoying the luxury of the car, and started making moves to get past.

Thankfully, the queue shortened until there were only three cars in front. We saw a space, weighed our options… and floored it!

And something very strange happened.

You see, normally, when you plant the accelerator in a highpowered automatic vehicle, several things occur. First, there is a pause, as the gears change down several notches to get the revs up and maximise power. Then there is a massive roar from the

engine, and with a lot of vibration and drama the car surges forward and after a couple of seconds you’re going very fast.

Now go back and delete everything from “First…” to “… drama”, and you begin to get the idea of what the same experience in a Rolls Royce feels like. As I pulled out and floored it, I noticed in the distance a bus coming the other way. I was already committed, and felt there was enough room.

A high-pitched squeal from the passenger seat indicated that my co-driver did not agree. However, about two seconds later we were back in our lane with room to spare, and I was left wondering what the hell had just happened!

You see, there was no pause, there was no roar, and certainly no drama. I’d pulled out, the car had simply, silently, and instantly surged forward with unbelievable pace, and glided back into the left hand lane before I’d even had time to ponder whether it was a good idea or not.

It was just all so… effortless! It was truly the strangest sensation, or lack thereof. And this is exactly what the Rolls-Royce Ghost, or any Rolls-Royce for that matter, is all about. It’s not about action and drama; it’s about luxury. Nothing else. Just pure, unadulterated luxury.

It’s all augmented with the unbelievable bespoke options that are available to any buyer of a Rolls. A tour of the factory in Goodwood revealed an incredible host of craftsmen, engineers and experts that come together to create a Rolls-Royce vehicle.

Each one is a work of art, and each owner is considered part of the family, welcome to visit the factory to see their car being put together if they so choose. As I said, a Rolls-Royce isn’t just a car, but a way of life, and I’m glad that I was able to experience that way of life, even if just for a couple of days!

Lisa Speed has been twiddling her thumbs this month as it’s been pretty quiet on the automotive front, so this time her ramblings are somewhat random…

don’t know what happened this month, but the proverbial tumbleweeds have been blowing through my office for the last two weeks! Yes there has been news, but it’s been about as interesting as watching the tumbleweeds – new car rental shop here, new corporate fleet there (yawn!).

In fact, tumbleweeds would’ve been more interesting, because at least I’d have been like, “What the hell!!! Are those tumbleweeds??? What are they doing in my office? Where did they come from?” Etc. As is usually the case when I get bored, I went shopping. Not window shopping, but desktop shopping, trawling through the many PR emails I get from the automotive brands, and it did dig up a couple of interesting items.

First off, whilst shopping I found a bag for shopping, the BMW i Urban Mega Shopper.

Made from sustainable and modern materials including leather tanned using olive leaves and a felt-look fabric made from recycled PET (whatever that is), it also doesn’t look half bad.

Might have to drop by the showroom to see if it matches any of my outfits.

Then I found this Bentley smartphone,

by Vertu. Now, I do love Bentleys, but on the other hand I’m something of a critic of Vertu – I just can’t see how a phone maker can offer the same thing as any other smartphone, and yet charge ten thousand bucks for it! I mean, how much difference can a slick leather case and some branding make? However, if you can afford a Bentley, you can afford a Vertu, and it would be quite cool having the matching phone and car. You KNOW I’m all about matching accessories…

On a completely unrelated note, I did come across something extremely cool happening over in Qatar next month as part of the Ayjal Youth Film Festival – the premiere of a documentary by LebaneseCanadian filmmaker Amber Fares charting the lives of a group of female street racers in Palestine’s West Bank. In this exclusive Ohlala! interview, we capture a glimpse into the mind of one of Lebanon’s most novel personalities, Michel Elefteriades, who possesses a larger than life persona.

You founded MusicHall... What is unique behind the concept?

Michel Elefteriades. MusicHall is not just a theatre venue, and it is much more than a club. It is an experience in itself, a live music stage representing a new and unique concept; very short live musical acts unveiling talents from around the world in a series of staged eclectic performances ranging from Rock to Latin, Gipsy, Middle Eastern, Jazz and much more, using the best technologies in sound and light equipments, in addition to refined gourmet menus.

How do you decide on the performances you showcase?

ME. The common denominator is talent.

Wherever the artists come from, whatever musical genre they play, they are some of the most talented artists you will ever come across.

We have to ask about Nowheristan. Can you give us a brief introduction about it?

ME. The concept springs from the unorthodox belief that many of our sacred and established truths, are in fact falsehoods that we have imposed 86

on ourselves: borders, identities, nationalisms, economic divisions and so forth.

Nowheristan is the first step on the way leading to Everywheristan. This clichéd name was chosen intentionally to generate excitement around a new vision aimed at solving the contemporary social, economic, and political difficulties that face us today.

What has changed in terms of development in Nowheristan?

ME. Nowheristan has been growing a lot in the past couple of years. Many anthropology, sociology and political science scholars have been devoting their works and focusing their theses and doctorates on Nowheristan.

You staged a show in Bahrain recently; tell us more about this experience...

ME. The show was especially tailoured for an international insurance company, Trust Re’s, twenty-fifth anniversary. It was a fiveact ethno-opera based on the four basic elements of nature: fire, earth, water and air, and the fifth one dedicated to ‘Trust’.

We gathered musicians from all around the world: China, India, Greece, Lebanon, Italy, Russia, etc… who all performed songs related to the element they were representing.

Finally, for the last act, I composed an original song, which was performed by all the artists together on stage.

What future plans are there for MusicHall?

ME: We have plans of expansion, namely in London and the US. We are also currently in the negotiations phase of opening a MusicHall in an African capital.

Inspired eye Photographer Waleed Al Abbas has put together a roving catalog based on something seemingly simple – people. The emotions they evoke, and his interest in the nuances of daily life and what they ultimately reveal – are captured in his captivating body of work.

rom the age of 16, photographer Waleed Al Abbas has since created an incredible body of work. None of his photographs are monotonous, not only because of their human interest, but aesthetically. None are redundant: not only are the figures different, but the play of black and white changes from photograph to photograph, and keeps our eyes moving within the photograph.

Even with his coloured shots, there is nothing matter of fact about them, however factual they may be. He seems to constantly invite the viewer to compare and contrast figures and photographs.

Waleed loved documenting the trips and precious moments he shared with his family, with his first digital camera in 2003, a Canon Powershot 3.2megapixel. So what does he look for when he looks into a lens? “It’s the expression in people’s eyes.

which he stumbled upon whilst exploring the alleyways of Manama. The Bahraini artist shares, “One day while I was on a photowalk in the streets of Manama, I stumbled upon an old ruined house. My photographic curiosity led me to go inside the house to see what lay inside. As I entered, I discovered an amazing photo location. Inside, I found a lot of doors located at the ground terrace. Because of the atmosphere of the place, an idea clicked: I would do a photoshoot that would revolve around the choices we have in our life, and that we have the freedom to make these choices.

I also wanted to touch upon the boundaries that hinder us from making our choices and walking the path of our true selves.”

Waleed, who currently uses a Nikon D800E camera, loves to capture the emotions of people. Providing an insight into his process of taking pictures, he says, “The best time is when I start talking to people and I let them know that I intend to photograph them. They then start talking to me about themselves, their lives and the stories of the places they love. I enjoy the times when I roam around the old cities like Manama and Muharraq – documenting the places and the people who are on the verge of vanishing.”

A photographer’s ultimate joy is to provoke an emotional response from the viewer. Waleed does it so well through his photographs.

He surely is one of the most promising photographers to watch out for.

Education is a right every child must be afforded. Julia Jefferson, founder of the Multinational School, set out on a mission to achieve exactly this. Ohlala! finds out more...

W

hen Julia and her family first arrived in Riyadh in 1996, there were several excellent international schools in the city but with extremely long waiting lists, an entrance testing and a refusal to accept children with learning difficulties or who didn’t speak English. Their youngest child with Aspergers was not accepted by any school. So they decided to set up their own school, where every child would get the support and the challenge they need to reach their full potential.

From that dream, came the Multinational School-Riyadh, which currently has 1,500 students aged two to 18, and is considered one of the top schools in the region. The Multinational School-Bahrain opened in September 2013 and is now home to more than 400 children.

Tell us about your teaching methods and programs...

Julia Jefferson. The Multinational School is unique due to its policy of accepting students who need a bit of extra help and teaching them in a class alongside their mainstream peers. We have special programs and staff in place for those children that require supported learning; programs that extend the curriculum for gifted and talented children; and an intensive English as an Additional Language program for students who don’t have English as their first language. We’re also committed to academic excellence in our schools where we have achieved some of the highest levels for IGCSE and A-levels in the world.

How do you measure whether your programs are successful?

JJ. We are rigorous in our ongoing assessment of our schools and the programs we offer; including parent and student surveys. Last year’s assessment of the Bahrain campus showed a high level of 94

What’s your view of education today?

JJ. Education needs to keep pace with technology advancements with a view to anticipating changes in the skills that may be required for jobs in the future. Our role as educators is to anticipate these needs and ensure that we nurture our future leaders in whatever areas they have greatest potential, and that they achieve their ambitions.

Can you share a short anecdote with us?

JJ. We had a student who enrolled at our school in Riyadh at the age of 12 who had spent most

of his life at home because the rare times he had been at school had been disastrous. This boy barely spoke and was heavily sedated. He engaged in an intensive programme run by a dedicated team working closely with him. Within a year he was attending mainstream classes with minimal support, and communicating enthusiastically with his peers. He spent six years at our school and managed to achieve good results within the IGCSE programme.

These are the types of students that make me so passionate about education, and in particular the programmes we run at our schools.

How many schools are there currently?

JJ. There are currently three schools, Multinational School-Bahrain, and Multinational School and Ishbilia Kindergarten in Riyadh.

What are your future plans?

JJ. In the Multinational School-Bahrain, we plan to open Year Nine (the first year of IGCSE) in the 2015-16 Academic Year and further develop our Adliya campus’ sporting and classroom facilities.

Lace Up for a

Cause

The American Women’s Association (AWA) invites you to walk (and run) for charity in support of various beneficiaries in the Kingdom.

An event everyone can enjoy and participate in, the American Women’s Association (AWA), is once again hosting the CTT or Cherry Tree Trot – one of the oldest and largest charity events in Bahrain. Held every two years, the gathering is organised to raise money for 35 charities, which the AWA supports in the Kingdom.

The CTT is a fun day-out happening on December 13, where the primary event is a two-kilometre race for the mentally and 96

physically challenged children and adults who will be supported by students from leading private schools and adult volunteers.

To be staged at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, there are also three, five and eight-kilometre runs for able-bodied participants. A three-kilometre walkathon is also organised for those who like to take things a little easier, such as families with baby prams.

Proceeds from the CTT will be used to replenish the AWA’s Community Service Fund, which is used to support the 35 charities in Bahrain over the next two-year period.

Children ages six to 12 can enter the 2K, whilst ages 13 and up can join the 3k and 5k races. The 8k race is for those aged 15 and over. Adults and children can take part in the walkathon; and spectators are welcome to come (no fees involved).

“Since AWA’s beginning in 1974, the focus has been on charity, friendship, and cultural understanding. The Cherry Tree Trot began in 1981 and is the pillar of AWA’s Community Service endeavours. It is made possible because of the generous commitment of time and service by the Chairpersons and volunteers who work for ten months to coordinate the many aspects of this event. As the CTT occurs only once every two years, we anticipate that 2014 will be equally well attended and successful!” says AWA President Lisa Wahba.

In 2012, AWA realised a record 24 centres participating, with almost 600 joining the race. In addition, there were close to 200

volunteers including sponsors; and the 2k, 3k, 8k, and walkathon race participants, and spectators to total approximately 2,000 attendees on the race day.

With the eve of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women upon us, Ohlala! reports on this very real world crisis of epidemic proportions.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Receiving recognition by the United National General Assembly, November 25 was chosen to commemorate the Mirabal sisters, four political activists against Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961), three of whom were ordered brutally assassinate in 1960.

The Situation Violence against women takes many forms – physical, sexual, psychological and economic.

These forms of violence are interrelated and affect women from before birth to old age. Some types of violence, such as trafficking, cross national boundaries. Women who experience violence suffer a range of health problems and their ability to participate in public life is diminished. Violence against women harms families and communities

This month, UNiTE #OrangeDay will focus on ‘Creating Safe and Empowering Public Spaces with and for Women and Girls’.

Violence against women is not confined to a specific culture, region or country, or to particular groups of women within a society. The roots of violence against women lie in persistent discrimination against women.

Up to 70 per cent of women experience violence in their lifetime.

Women aged 15 to 44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, car accidents, war and malaria, according to World Bank data.

Violence by an Intimate Partner The most common form of violence experienced by women globally is physical violence inflicted by an intimate partner, with women beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused.

A World Health Organization (WHO) study in 11 countries found that the percentage of women who had been subjected to sexual violence by an intimate partner ranged from six per cent in Japan to 59 per cent in Ethiopia.

Several global surveys suggest that half of all women who die from homicide are kil ed by their current or former husbands or partners.

Sexual Violence It is estimated that, worldwide, one in five women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime.

Sexual Violence in Conflict Sexual violence in conflict is a serious, presentday atrocity affecting mil ions of people, primarily women and girls. It is frequently a conscious strategy employed on a large scale by armed groups to humiliate opponents, terrify individuals and destroy societies. Women and girls may also be subjected to sexual exploitation by those mandated to protect them.

“Honour killing” In many societies, rape victims, women suspected of engaging in premarital sex, and women accused of adultery have been murdered by their relatives because the violation of a woman’s chastity is viewed as an affront to the family’s honour.

Discrimination and violence Many women face multiple forms of discrimination and increased risk of violence.

I applaud leaders who are helping to enact and enforce laws and change mindsets.
