November is here and the temperature is finally cooling with the AC taking an evident backburner to its usual around-theclock working pattern. This season can still wreak havoc on your skin, but, as always, we have you covered in our Beauty Column this month. You may have been hearing the word autumnal being passed about like wildfire and I for one can’t get enough of it! You know there’s some words that you stumble across and you just have to repeat, because, well, it’s fun to say? Well, I love what it evokes: cooling weather, foliage, and warm tones. We have two exclusive interviews this issue with the remarkable fashion designer, Stella McCartney showcasing her stunning Winter 2017 collection and also an exclusive interview with acclaimed photographer Michal Pudelka, who has created a unique set of images for the ERDEM x H&M campaign. Now, I’m going to quickly treat myself to that pumpkin-spiced latte that I’ve been coveting all year round, before winter well and truly arrives to spoil such pleasures.

e’d like to take it back to the beginning… do you remember when you first became aware of fashion, or at least when “style” became

a fascination for you? It’s something I have always known, even from the age of 6 or 7... I used to love all the old films. Audrey Hepburn and Doris Day and would get obsessed with the clothes. Annie Get Your Gun was my absolute favourite – I would watch it and go to my mum’s wardrobe to look at her clothes and try them on. Tell us about your latest collection? (WINTER 2017) Faith and love inspire the Winter 2017 collection; I want to reflect the good in people within my work and bring people together in what I do. The collection explores signature Stella classics in a more precise yet effortless way. 32

What would you say is something that is carried in every season of the brand? Definitely that balance between masculine and feminine, it’s a theme that I try to always incorporate within all my designs. How do you think your clothes empower women? I like to design things that allow women to be themselves but at the same time offer something that they might not have thought of or they wouldn’t have dared to do. I want my designs to allow women to feel strong, feminine, sexy and shine; and not just have people notice the outfit but the actual women wearing it.

You have worked very hard to make sure that both your clothes and your company reflect your own ethics – can you tell us more about why it’s personally important to you to keep a sustainable approach? My first job is to be a fashion designer. My first job is to make desirable, luxurious, beautiful clothing and accessories that women want to buy. But I will always take the opportunity to use a beautiful organic fabric. I obviously don’t use any animal skins or furs in my collections which has a huge impact on the planet. My first decision is always based on: can I do this in a more environmental way without sacrificing design, if I can;then there is no reason not to. What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to the fashion industry and how do you overcome some of the challenges this industry brings? What bothers me sometimes about the fashion world is the sometimes lack of morals and that they are not always doing things for the right reasons. If I’m sympathetic, I can say that they sometimes perhaps overlook the reality of the making – maybe they don’t have the information to think about where the leather or fur is coming from but if I’m realistic I think they do and so I guess I get disappointed with their lack of compassion at times. How would you go about putting together your perfect day outfit that would take you from desk to dinner? I think you’ve got to have three staple pieces in your collection. You’ve always got to have a perfectly tailored jacket, perfect fit pant and if they both make up a suit, then great… to be worn together or to be worn apart. You’ve got to have a great t-shirt too! The basics! What is the ultimate trend for you that will always transcend time? I studied after school on Savile Row and tailoring has always been a huge part of what I do, it’s part of the DNA of the brand. The Middle East market is a very fashion-driven society. Are you excited to bring your shop-in-shop to Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain and in what ways, if any, is this opening different to others? I am very excited, it’s definitely an important market for us however I have never been a believer of targeting an area or capitals of the world and separating them off. I think we live in a global age where people read the same magazines, and watch the same TV programmes. Everyone is now more alike due to the internet which has caused the huge communication change that has connected the world. I would not separate the Middle Eastern women, as I do not think they are massively different to a New York or London woman. There are chic Arab women living in Bahrain, in London and in New York, and they travel all over… there is a level of sophistication all over the world. THE COLD WAR Angela Beitz discusses the importance of small skincare changes for the cooler months

You’ve battled a

long summer and now its time to get outdoors and enjoy winter. But in terms of beauty, winter can wreak havoc on your skin the same way that the summer can. So no matter what skincare you are using now you need to change your regime. Small changes will make a huge difference.

THE CREAMIER, THE BETTER

If you only make one change to your skin-care routine, change up your face wash. Swapping a foaming cleanser for a creamy one is a valuable step to help skin adjust to colder, drier weather. This will ensure you don’t strip your skin of valuable oils as you cleanse. Typically cream or oil-based cleansers are your go-tos and they will still work just as well to get remove make-up and get your skin clean.

SHED THAT SKIN

Exfoliating is so important in winter and this means both your body and your face. The combination of dry air and hot showers will really take all moisture out of your skin so it’s super important to scrub away the dead skin cells at least twice a week. You can also mix your cleanser with a small amount of exfoliator for a more gentle scrub if you are prone to redness or sensitivity. Fresh skin cells are better able to absorb products, giving you more bang for your skincare buck and get will get that complexion glowing.

LOAD UP ON SERUM

There’s nothing better than the feeling of liquid serums sinking into your skin, especially if you’ve been doing exfoliating as I just mentioned above. If you’ve never used a serum before its basically a lightweight moisturiser that penetrates deeper into your skin by delivering active ingredients. I love a good Vitamin C serum followed by an Anti-Ageing serum especially when applied before bedtime so it can do its thing while you get your beauty sleep. Rosehip Oil is also another favourite and the organic ones are the best.

HYDRATE

Look for products that are designed to hydrate and will feed your complexion with moisture for 24 hours. You may also need to switch to a heavier cream especially at night so your skin can rejuvenate itself. It’s essentials to use hydration masks also (twice a week is perfect) and be sure to slather on body cream as soon as you step out of the shower. Trust me, your skin will thank you for it. 48

TREAT YOUR TRESSES

It’s easy to forget about our hair during the cooler months but our locks need moisture as well. The wind and dry air can really wreak havoc, not to mention the dreaded static that winter can cause. Hair masks that repair and lock in moisture used twice will week will help to create shiny, healthy tresses along with using a serum after blow-drying. Mositurising and hydrating shampoos and conditioner will also help to soothe dry hair.

A trip to the Maldives

is always a special treat with the soft breeze, azure water and the ability to strip away any stress or worry. This is not my first time in the Maldives and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing how coming back a few years later conjures up lots of lovely memories and familiar feelings so quickly. Located at Noonu Atoll, roughly a 45 minute sea plan ride from Male airport, Velaa Private Island is like no other in the Maldives and boasts some spectacular features that really make it stand out from the rest. These include but are not limited to an amazing teppanyaki restaurant and wine cellar in a futuristically designed tower, a snow room, a six-metre-high climbing wall and even a golf course. I arrive at the pier of the resort via the seaplane and am greeted by the lovely hotel staff who are super warm and professional, yet laid-back. Upon arrival I am offered a fragrant and fresh towel and the choice of bubbles, fresh juice or sparkling water. Its these very small, chic touches that make the stay so special. But in saying that what makes this resort so unique and why should come here instead of other places in Maldives? It comes down to the seamless and top-notch service and the luxurious nature. Velaa have done a stellar job of seamlessly developing luxury villas without spoiling or taking away from the natural beauty of this 52

TRAVEL Escapes pristine location. The property is perfectly maintained and is simply breathtaking. Service is personalised with a butler assigned to each guest who will take care of your every need and privacy is also a big factor with the resort hosting a lot of VIP’s and royalties but you would never know as everything kept very discreet. Velaa’s mantra is all about moments and whether you are playing golf or diving the experience is exclusive to you which really adds the luxury element of your stay. Each villa, house and residence has its own pool and own private bit of beach which again showcases luxury and privacy. The rooms are super elegant and combine natural materials and Maldivian inspired design features, as well as private courtyards complete with outdoor bathtubs and rainforest showers. We oved the thatched roof and the turtle paintings (Velaa meaning turtle). Every couple of years the resort shuts down for a period of time so that there can be small renovations and maintenance so you can only imagine just how well kept the resort is. I was then prescribed their Detox Program which would benefit my body type and the ailments that had been displayed from the results of my assessment. I was advised that the chef was preparing a healthy lunch based upon my specific dietary requirements and I decided to enjoy my meal in the privacy of my villa. However, I did have the option to eat my healthy lunch at one of their restaurants, European and Khaleeji fusion Saffron or international a la carte restaurant Rimal. My taste-buds were thankful for the food that was promptly delivered. My hunger pang was no more after I enjoyed my starters of lentil soup and avocado salad with poached prawns. For my main entrée I basked in the delight that was mouth-watering steamed salmon which was accompanied by a selection of freshly steamed vegetables. Their detox drink ‘Recharge’ definitely put a spring in my step with their perfectly blended beetroot and rosemary fusion. After my tasty lunch I returned to the largest spa in Bahrain to commence my bespoke three-hour program that included a detox body scrub, lymphatic drainage massage and a facial. This was absolute bliss and exactly what I needed. Late afternoon I was made to feel like a VIP when I continued with my wellness detox activities by completing Aqua Zumba in the private indoor pool-area with a qualified personal trainer. This was great fun and I will definitely be including this in my exercise regime. After a blissful sleep and a long lie-in, I enjoyed a healthy breakfast in the confines of my villa wearing one of their plush dressing gowns and slippers. After a full day of relaxation and making the most of my unlimited use of complimentary fitness facilities and their water therapy garden my partner then checked-in and joined my staycation. He’d heard amazing reviews about Asian restaurant Keizo, but, had never had the privilege of eating there so we decided to round-up my staycation with our evening meal there. This really was a breathtaking moment as we sat down and cast our eyes over the lake with the reflection of the tiki-torches providing the perfect backdrop for our coveted romantic setting. You cannot help but awe over the presentation of each dish that is brought to your table. Keeping with the restaurant theme each meal was served Japanese style which further added to the authenticity of the Asian restaurant. After harboring our food babies, we ended up in a food-induced coma as we passed out on the extremely comfy luxurious king-sized beds. During check-out we both agreed that Al Areen Palace & Spa never fails to impress no matter the occasion and further noted that is always leaves a lasting memory with all the attributes of a dear friendsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; embrace. ABOUT ELSA Born in Beirut, Elsa’s passion for design and jewellery came naturally. Growing up surrounded by creativity, her brother Assad Osta co founder of couture brand Azzi & Osta and her Mother, Gisele Aouad, a renowned Lebanese actress, their artistic influence was embedded in her. From the rich souks of Beirut where jewellery is woven into the everyday fabric of life, to the heirlooms found in her Grandmother’s jewellery box, each element was absorbed by the ever-curious Elsa. Lying face-down sounds luxurious only when admiring a lively exotic green plant, floating on a bed of sea shells under the sound of serenity; like a whisper to your soul, a reminder that you are alive and worthy of such a treat. As we enter through the revolving glass door, and we swift right working our way towards the SPA, we absorbed the grandeur of the whole place, the high ceiling, the ever tall doors, it is majestic! We arrived early and the SPA director was kind to meet us at the SPA’s designated lounge, happy to explain the concept of the Parent-Child Bonding SPA experience. A choice of one from three different treatments: ‘Relaxed Us’ is an amazing soothing massage, ‘Beautiful Us’ is a facial tailored to suit young skin, and ‘Glowing Us’ is a full body indulgence. All treatments stretches over a dreamy 45 minutes that will leave you and your precious children at the age of 5 to 16 wholeheartedly relaxed. We filled a quick one-page form to express any medical concerns and identify the level of pressure that we would prefer. Then, off to the room; on one side is a relaxing area with a bathroom, massage beds on the other side, and a changing area falls in between. Firstly we unloaded our outfits to plunge into the luxurious comfort of the SPA robes, then, we spent a few minutes in the relaxing area; I had a sweet cup of green tea with homemade cookies while my daughter enjoyed a glass of fresh juice, along with some premium quality fried apricots. Eager to have her first SPA experience, my daughter did not want to waste time, so, we informed our therapists that we were ready. We moved to the

other side of the room where we got our feet gently scrubbed and rinsed with lemony warm water. Four different oils are available for you to choose from; the first is based on the relaxing lavender flower and a blend of other herbs, the second is a special mixture aims to awaken your body’s hidden energy, the third is citrusy with aromatic mandarin, and last-but-notleast their basic non-aromatic oil for those of you who prefer to smell like your own perfume or maybe add the earthy deep scent of Oud for an additional charge. Previous horror stories of visits to other salons in the Kingdom had left my confidence blinkered, but, this Salon, Spa and Health club has restored my faith in the beauty sector. Not everyone is blessed with Twiggy eyelashes and I for one have very sensitive eyes, so, I was weary as to whether or not I would be an ideal candidate for YUMI Lashes which is an eyelash enhancement treatment. Whilst enjoying my complimentary cappuccino I filled out my pretreatment consultation form and discussed my concerns with the beauty therapist in which I was assured that I would be fine. Now, it’s important to know that YUMI Lashes is not your traditional perming, which is what many lash-enhancing treatments rely on. YUMI Lashes uses the very latest advancements in beauty technology to accentuate the natural eyelash, and, therefore the eye itself. This revolutionary technique does not merely curve your lashes but gives them length, height and volume, giving the appearance of having longer and thicker lashes. What is more, YUMI tint gives you the ability to enhance your natural complexion and beauty through colour that compliments your skin tone. Many people have converted to this method on account of previously being obsessed with fake eyelashes or lash extensions which can damage your natural lashes. I lay down on their comfortable therapy bed as my therapist cleansed my eye area and then she started her magic. My treatment lasted around 45 minutes and I wasn’t agitated for even a second. During this period my under-eye area was treat to the application of coenzyme Q10 gel pads, which have anti-aging properties. As my eyes were closed during the procedure my therapist kept me updated on what she was doing at every stage and I was thankful for a moments peace away from my usual hectic schedule. After all, It’s always nice when you can have some impromptu shut-eye throughout the day. Now, I must share with you that I’m all for the au natural look, but, I cannot leave, and more to the point, will not leave the house without mascara. This is for fear of scaring passers-by, so, to glance at myself in the mirror and be in awe of my own lashes was nothing short of astounding. Is it even possible to have lash envy of yourself? Honestly ladies, this treatment is an absolute game-changer and has put a positive turnstile in my beauty regime. To keep my eyelashes at peak flutter I invested in their Keratin Mascara

which strengthen and conditions my lashes whilst also acting as a primer before using black mascara. It also protects your lashes from the elements including and more aptly in this region, sand! The YUMI Lashes effect lasts between eight to twelve weeks, which is the natural life cycle of an eyelash. The only homecare advice is to not get them wet or wear mascara for 24hrs. I’m now 3 weeks’ post-treatment and I am forever getting interrogated as to what mascara I’m using… I’m proud to say that I’m not using anything. This has proved to be more of a pick-me-up than I had previously envisaged. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and in this case it’s most definitely in my eye…lashes. Before I left Dessange some pretty bottles caught my eye and I queried what they were used for. I was politely told that they were Natural Pigma colour optimiser shampoos, and, since I was in need of a refresh of my dulling colour this certainly felt like fate. Deciding to further treat myself to a refresh of colour was also a no-brainer, after all, the treatment itself would only take a maximum of twenty minutes’ dependent upon my desired intensity. I lay back at their sink as they washed my hair with shampoo and I was once again relaxed. Of course, they were extra careful so as not to wet my lashes. After shampooing, they towel-dried my hair and generously applied Natural Pigma on my lifeless locks. Once the time elapsed, it’s at this stage that they add a little water and start to lather like a regular shampoo. This was followed with conditioner as normal. I was brought over to their express blow-dry station where they coiffured my hair around bristle brushes resulting in a glorious display of perfect bouncy waves. This makes me envious that I cannot do such a technique at home, alas, I can continue this treatment at home as they retail the product range. They have 6 different colours: Blonde, brown, copper, black, red and chestnut. All of which can be mixed and customised for each of their clients. My face must have said it all as I glanced upon the transformation that had taken place. Dull and lifeless locks were exchanged for a vibrant and glossy mane, in less than 45 minutes. We’ve all been there visiting that nightmare salon, you know the types, when you find yourself nodding along politely declaring that you’re happy with said results, when in fact you’re dying inside? The Secret Life of

FLOWERS Ohlala interviews acclaimed photographer Michal Pudelka who has created a unique series of images for the ERDEM x H&M print campaign, playing with the idea of family portraits. The evocative images were taken during the shooting of Baz Luhrmann’s short film for the collaboration where super models joined the actors in a series of group shots, adding an extra dimension to the ERDEM x H&M world. How was it shooting the ERDEM X H&M campaign? It was such a great experience to be able to collaborate with such talented artists as Erdem and Baz Luhrmann, all under the hands of H&M. Aside from it being a very captivating project in general; the working process felt authentic and creatively charged. What was it like shooting on location? How did you create the world in it for the print campaign? It’s very natural for me to shoot on location; it’s something that is very familiar and inspiring for me, it’s a thread that runs through the vast majority of my work. The main inspiration for the campaign as a whole, of course came from the world that Baz created for ERDEM x H&M and I also worked with Erdem’s brand vision and concept to design the print campaign. We thought it would be great to do a modern take on classical family portraits, creating characters in ERDEM’s world and allow for the eye to travel. I did some drawings of how I imagined this world to look and we went from there. Can you talk about the lookbook shoot: what was the inspiration for these images? What did you want to convey? The lookbook images are part of a bigger collective project, including my print campaign and also the film by Baz. The idea was to stage a room in our family house where the campaign and film is also shot. Light in the images is a key element since we wanted to stage a more intimate and family like feeling. I really like to add elements of surprise and surrealism in my images and thought of details to enhance the atmosphere, for example the flowers being handed to our model from out of frame, I wanted to retain the essence of what a classic look book should be, but with a twist. How was it working with the ERDEM x H&M campaign? Erdem has a very strong sense of brand identity and brings to the collaborative table a great amount of ideas, vision and care. The collection itself really spoke to me, as there’s a huge amount of detail in the pieces themselves, from the tailoring, to the prints and embroidery, it’s also really cool to see ERDEM expand into menswear for the first time. 70

So when we heard about the unveiling of the all new S-Class at Al-Haddad Motors, we were more than keen to take part in the proceedings and to be handed the keys to such an impressive creation. The new S-Class range comes complete with a variety of models to choose from. Our focus was on the beautiful Mercedes-Benz S450. It is obvious only the highest quality materials have been used to put this mechanical masterpiece together. When absorbing the splendour of the exterior there were so many features to appreciate, we had to take our time working our way around the vehicle. Beside from the overall, picture perfect, sleek body design, many individual elements caught our eye. New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are an obvious inclusion, along with the new radiator grille sporting three twin louvres as well as vertical strips, complete with a high-gloss black finish. The freshly designed, sporty front bumper has pronounced air intakes and adds to the 76

classy appearance. The elegant curves of the sedan’s sides flow to the rear where new LED lamps and three horizontal pairs of fibre optics finish off a truly well designed body. The interior more than matches the high standard set by the exterior. It is immediately obvious how much attention to detail and love of craft has been put into the design. From the open-pore woods to the leather trimmed doors and dashboard, only the very best of everything has been used. A new widescreen cockpit, wood-leather steering wheel and a panoramic sunroof come as standard in the S450. The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has always been associated with successful names in the world of culinary excellence, and with the relatively new Cantina Kahlo this theory has only proved to be a continuous reality. We abandoned our car at the front of the luxury hotel and immerged into the lobby through a revolving door. Straight through the security check-up and out to the pool side. We could have drove further and parked few steps away from the restaurant’s entrance but we did not regret the few minutes’ walk at the heart of such a beautiful landscape! A few tables were already occupied on the terrace overlooking a peaceful lake, but, we preferred to be seated indoors. We opened the door and beside the gorgeous Orchid arrangement in the centre of the entree, the delicious smells were so appealing I felt hungry already. We’d been escorted to our table beside the live band and by the window. Our waitress was the loveliest lady, initially she explained the different corners of the buffet and helped us with the menu from which we were able to pick whatever items took our desire. The restaurant is not vast, but, it is the perfect size for a cozy gathering, it felt like someone’s own lake house. The green color is dominant with an array of paintings decorating the walls I believe is mainly inspired by the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.The three corners of pure deliciousness are attractively arranged. Of course the soup and salad station had a big bowl of guacamole that screams “Eat me!”, I must say, I visited this corner so many times! I tried the tortilla soup while my companion fell in love with the beef soup. The taco station was rich with two kinds of rice, three choices for the filling, beef, vegetarian, and chicken tacos. You choose one and the chef will happily heat up the soft taco bread, add some cheese if you may like, top it with the filling of your choice, then help you figure out the best sauce: coriander, tomato, pineapple, maybe add a bit of onions or fresh cilantro or some red cabbage?! We ordered our drinks and started a discovery journey of Mexican flavours. The sweet corner had a variety of desserts, but, to be honest I couldn’t care less after I noticed the chef frying churros on the spot. Oh! with chocolate or cajeta (caramel) sauce, it is ultimate 78

happiness manifested on a plate. From the menu, we had to try the ceviche, it bypassed our expectations. And for our main course, we decided to try the ribeye steak with spicy bacon, rice and banana chips. This is a great choice for meat lovers, tender, juicy, and the taste was amazing. I was also intrigued to order the grilled Portobello mushroom with cactus. This was a simple straight forward dish, two Portobello mushrooms grilled and topped with grilled pieces of cactus and finished with a sprinkle of cheese but the taste was anything but simple. The cactus is a lot like artichokes, a very good choice for vegetarian guests and a perfect combo with the steak. Mexican cuisine has just won a new venue on our lovely Island of Bahrain, Cantina Kahlo at the The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. Ohlala is partial to fine dining and after hearing rave reviews about the wide selection of delicacies available at Gallery Café’s recently launched Afternoon Tea, well, we just couldn’t resist heading to Gallery 21, Block 338 for ourselves.

o find you the very best afternoon tea in town, we’ve done the decent thing and sampled Gallery Café’s post-lunch, pre-dinner institution. Walking into Gallery cafe you are hit with delicate furnishings, creative lighting features and mosaicked flooring that wouldn’t look out-of-place in an art gallery. We challenge you to walk in and not mutter “wow”. We were warmly greeted by our smiling waitress who showed us to our comfy seat and handed us their beautifully simplistic menu. No matter what time of day your hunger pang starts Gallery Café have you covered. From breakfast through to late night dining they offers a range of freshly prepared savoury and sweet treats from their in-house bakery complemented by signature coffees prepared by master baristas. A delectable array of international plates is also available from their a la carte menu, from traditional breakfast dishes to hearty sandwiches and crisp salads through the ‘Flavours of the Orient’ specialities. Guests with a sweet tooth can sample a large selection of daily patisseries, tarts and gateaux from the display showcase. We settled on the quintessentially British-inspired Afternoon Tea for two that is served Sunday to Friday, 3pm to 6pm, at the reasonable cost of 16BD++ for two people, inclusive of two hot beverages per person. My Bahraini friend was very pleased with the polite nod to Arabic cuisine with the Mohmmara and Asparagus Sandwich being included within the savouries section. Our afternoon tea arrived in a debonair grey bedside drawer which was a quirky extension of their European themed surroundings. Few things photograph better than this array of delectable treats and after collating an incessant amount of social media content I allowed myself to finally start. However, this then begged the question of what I would indeed sample first? I settled on the Cucumber Sandwich and I was impressed by the freshness of the bread that had come straight from their inhouse bakery. There is nothing worse than a stale roll to eradicate the grandeur of afternoon tea, that’s for sure! Although, I have to say my favourite savoury was most definitely the open faced roast 80

beef and I have to be frank with you, this is the nicest beef sandwich I have had the pleasure of tasting in Bahrain. The horseradish alone exasperated its sheer perfection. Vegetarians needn’t miss out on this afternoon experience as Gallery Café have other options available. Similarly, the freshly baked traditional English raisin scones with clotted cream and jams were perfectly paired with English tea. We had such a giggle and we couldn’t help but put our little pinky fingers to the elegantly high ceiling. If you haven’t had the privilege of trying one of their signature freak shakes then I admonish you to do so at your earliest convenience. The Chef ’s selection of desserts had my sweet-tooth going into a blissful state of mind and I couldn’t help but let out a coo when I witnessed that they’d brought us a Chocolate Happiness mini freak shake. This is a dreamy concoction made-up of white chocolate ganache, milk, chocolate ice-cream, whipped cream, brownie, marshmallow, Nutella & Maltesers. Absolute food goals right there! Now, I know that that makes it sound a very girly affair, but, it’s pretty obvious that food-lovers of all genders will enjoy the likes of their smoked salmon quiche and egg truffle sandwich, and, of course, an assortment of macaroons. HOW YOGA MIGHT BE DESTROYING OUR SEAS... Not being one to embrace the recent athleisure trend, Miss Ohlala now has an environmental reason to get us out of our synthetic activewear and back into the timeless fashion classics that she champions.

I realised recently that my environmental knowledge is seriously outdated. I’m ashamed to say that I had no idea that plastic fibres from washing machines end up in the sea.I’ve resolved to increase my marine environmental awareness, and in the spirit of “every little helps”, below are a few of my personal action points. By now I’d hope most people know about microbeads, the brightly coloured tiny plastic balls that forward-thinking countries have banned from rinse-off face washes and other beauty products because of the threat to marine wildlife. However, recent seawater studies report having found high concentrations of microfibers (smaller than microbeads) which originate from our wardrobes. Plastic microfibers, released after yoga pants and other synthetic clothing is laundered, ultimately finding their way into wastewater systems and the ocean. Aside from reducing purchases of non-synthetic clothing in the first place, rinsing your gym kit in cool water rather than putting it in the washing machine after every use, could reduce microfiber pollution, save water and prolong the life of the clothes. It might not be very glamorous to wash your gym kit as you shower post-gym, but from experience it’s proving quite effective! Seafood eaters may consume between 1 – 30 pieces of plastic a day, this doesn’t include the microplastics we breathe in, drink or eat because they settle out of the air into our food. Plastic breaks down into smaller pieces often consumed by the smallest marine life. The plastic then works its way up the food chain, potentially causing problems for fish and the humans that consume them. By declining a plastic straw, lid or cutlery, you can reduce the amount of 98

unnecessary single-use plastic (#singleuseplastic). Nothing’s worse than watching your toddler build a beautiful sand castle, only to decorate it with washed up garbage. Or relaxing on a beach, and then coming face-to-face with some cigarette butts. According to a quick Google search, cigarette ends can take up to 10 years to degrade which I find astonishing.
