EDITOR’S LETTER

NAM

I actually wore my coat for the first time in what felt like forever last week and I loved it. I love pumpkin spiced lattes and the reflectional period that Autumn always seems to ensue with me. I love the wind beating across my face and watching the recent rainfall. I loved being snuggled up with my cat in my PJ’s watching the recent storms that have catapulted themselves around us. This started to make me truly reflect on what makes me happy and how lucky I am as a person... and how I feel that I’ve most definitely take this for granted. Speaking of overhauls, when it comes to your wardrobe - particularly ones just after fashion week - many of us look to runway trends and street style round-ups in search of inspiration. But one avenue we all go down - whether intentionally or not - is probably sitting in the palm of your hand right now. Thanks to influencers, celebrities and sometimes even our own friends, Instagram is awash with style inspo, whether it’s that new bag that you needed the encouragement to buy or a pair of patent leather trousers that you weren’t sure how to style - the folks on your feed have the answers. While many old-school bloggers started out with just a simple website, the trend now stretches further out onto Instagram, and there are now more fashion “influencers” rather than “bloggers” than ever before. And they’re having an incredible impact on how we dress. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... “Be present!” After all, the experiences and giggles may not be truly captured when you are more worried about how it’s perceived through a lens.

elf-Portrait FALL 2018 COLLECTION

T

he Self-Portrait world is expanding. The fall collection reflects a more complete and layered wardrobe, which is in keeping with the realities of a metropolitan lifestyle; an evolved aesthetic, both eclectic and empowered, has formed. There’s a finely-tuned graphic language at play—one that complements the dynamic spirit of the wearer. A day-to-night uniqueness is apparent, which combines tones and textures to render a singular, confident personality. Occasion-wear pieces are still found, but the suggestion now includes a more relaxed and easygoing attitude for the urbane individual.

Cropped cardigans are worn over outerwear and dresses; toughened leather pieces are balanced with delicate crochet accenting, which either pools around the ankle or gracefully shields the neckline. Geometric forms seem to collapse upon the body, with foulard print shirt-dresses, plaid parkas and flowing drapes on skirts or dresses. It is this juxtaposition of structure and movement that lenses the look of the season. Femininity, utility, and refinement join to create an unorthodox beauty.

MECHANIC

OF NOBILITY

Moynat has long been renowned for the use of innovative and rare materials: the House created the first waterproof trunk in 1854 using canvas coated with gutta-percha, the sap of a tree from Indonesia. We delve into the world of creation and see how Moynat has evolved since its original manifestation.

The artistic evolution of Moynat reached a peak in the 1920s, a period marked by the Art Deco movement. The international exhibitions of 1925 until 1937 were landmarks in the history of modern decorative arts and made Paris into the capital of a new world of art, design, architecture and creativity. Moving away from ostentation, working with new materials and new technologies, 12

www.ohlala-magazine.com

the Art Deco movement is a period that has brought great clarity of line and shape. Clarity of vision, a quest for purity and simplicity combined with an exuberance of creativity and an effervescence of imagination to bring together different fields of artistic effort. It also led to a coming together of architects, painters, jewellery designers such as René Herbst, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Puiforcat, Etienne Cournault and Gérard Sandoz. While modern, sleek, and geometric forms define Art Deco as much as they do Moynat aesthetics, artistic director Ramesh Nair also draws inspiration from the whole spectrum of the arts: a sense of movement from dance, the geometrical shapes from Cubism, the contrast of black and white from NeoPlasticism and a fascination with the mechanical world of Futurism. Each year, Moynat selects an aspect of craft to shine a light on its unique approach: leathers, craftsmanship, surface embellishment. It is time to see how these different materials are held together at crucial points to delineate space in the container that we call a bag. Taking a cue from transformable jewellery of the 1930s, Moynat has adopted the modernist approach to the metallic components of their bags, layering, inlaying and enamelling multiple metals such as silver, gold and platinum with more prosaic metals like brass and treating all materials with the same finesse of technique and workmanship. Closures, clasps, hooks and rings not only make the bag a useful, transportable object but also help elevate it from sober practicality to a dimension of the arts. These mechanisms are often called ‘bijouterie’ (jewellery) in French because of the beauty of the design and their close relationship to sculpture. A special place is given to the mechanics of their closures that are an invisible but passionate part of bijouterie. The Moynat lock, a triumph of artisanal craftsmanship, is the object that, more than any other, links beauty and mechanical ingenuity to life values: to make, to hold and to inhabit a personal space. @moynat

COLOUR AFTER FLYING IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST HAIRDRESSERS, TAYLOR TAYLOR LONDON IT WOULD HAVE BEEN RUDE NOT TO BE A FLY-ONTHE-WALL FOR DESSANGE’S LATEST TRAINING SESSION. JAYNE GREEN REVEALS WHAT THE BUZZ IS ALL ABOUT.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

25

SS

antiago Rodriguez is a core member of the International Education team from Taylor Taylor London, ranked amongst the best hairdressers in the world. With over 15 years of editorial and commercial experience in fashion, beauty and music their styling team is at the very forefront of hair styling and education. Their unique collective of hairdressing talent travels the world offering fully bespoke training programs that are tailored to professional teams such as our beloved Dessange in Bahrain. Their courses range from cutting edge editorial looks, to creative colouring and mens technical masterclasses, which are all designed to help develop the latest hairdressing techniques and to help translate the latest trends for clients within the salon environment. As I was ushered in to their hair section I was excited about what magic was going to be unleashed on my frazzled locks. What I found was a refreshingly honest and polite consultation about the current state of my hair; dry and damaged from years of upkeep from a barrage of hair colours. The different patterns of sectioning were divided and conquered to practice a selection of different looks. My Senior Stylist Kate, under the professional eye of Santiago, recommended that they use L’Oréal INOA, a leading no ammonia permanent hair colour range with Oil Delivery System (ODS2) technology, for all hair types. Just to give you a bit of background, they also offer INOA Color Correction service, which is powered by an ammonia-free formula to support ultimate hair and scalp health, can help revive colour that’s become dull and lost its shine, and can even tackle unwanted brassy tones. It’s also

26

www.ohlala-magazine.com

an excellent option if you’re seeking more depth and dimension... your hair that is! Overall, Color Correction can help revive your colour and enhance your best facial features. With the expertise of your hairdresser and an in-depth colour consultation you can achieve your perfect shade that is free from ammonia - it sounds too good to be true, but, I was thankful for their understanding, especially since I want to try and strengthen my hair before my wedding next year. I scouted the facility and nosed in to other ‘models’ consultations who were all experiencing their own transformations. Every nationality, every hair type and all different visions were evident but with the continuous upskilling of Dessange’s staff, one thing

“The hair and beauty world is constantly evolving and that is why we provide continuous education and bring international stylists over at least twice a year. This level of support educates our staff which is not only benefiting them but also our beautiful clients.” - Amie Perkins, Dessange’s Salon Manager

BEAUTY Files “The team at Dessange are very passionate about education and their clients. It is a privilege to be one of their selected hairdressing educators whom they fly in from all over the world to inspire their creative professionals. The Dessange salon has a qualified team of hairdressers, nail technicians, and makeup artists as well as a spa and fitness centre all in one amazing building.” - Santiago Rodriguez was paramount - perfection is guaranteed across the board. Their honesty is forever refreshing and they don’t just say “Yes!” at the thought of an extra dinar. For instance, if your hair is black and you want to achieve that beach blonde hair that you’ve coveted for as long as you can remember, they will manage your expectations and advise you that this is a transitional process that will require a number of sessions to maintain desired results and maintain optimum health of your hair. Anything else would be too much for your hair follicles to withstand. The techniques that Taylor Taylor London were showcasing were truly exemplary. Different hair types require an alternative rotation of techniques since hair cannot be catered for an a ‘one size fits all’ basis. This is the beauty of Dessange at its core as they invest in their staff with nationally recognised qualifications across their fleet of smiling staff. Some salons in Bahrain unfortunately have allowed untrained members of staff to take your hair in their hands without the relevant experience required to provide the necessary insurance that we all deserve on our manes. Dessange truly understand the importance of trust and professionalism to instil confidence in their lovely and loyal clientele and that is why I, amongst others, return time and time again. These ladies have accelerated their colouristic prowess as they set to work mixing their concoctions of hair-dye to achieve the finest in show stopping shades. My INOA service was applied using a combination of different hair shades to allow me to achieve a copper balayage using a dining sectio pattern - which is no mean feat to accomplish in the salon industry, but, alas, Dessange have us covered on all bases. As the brush fell down upon my roots I was expertly told that this technique was chosen to blend and give depth and dimension! This was paired with an Olaplex treatment that helps to repair and strengthen hair during colouring services. This also has additional properties to allow for your hair to be nourished, strengthened while also promoting ongoing softness and shine - and wow, did it shine! Furthermore, this resulted in my impromptu Cheshire cat smile ensuing as it swept across my face

when I looked in the mirror. The transformation was that remarkable my cheeks began to hurt with all the smiling. You owe it to yourself (and your locks) to visit this unparalleled five star facility… yallah! @dessangebahrain www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEAUTY Column

BEST TRESSED A lustrous head of hair is indicative of a healthy life and a good hair care routine is important especially coming into the winter months. Angela Beitz talks through the key factors to achieving strong, healthy strands.

GET REGULAR TRIMS

Regular trimming preserves length, while getting rid of split ends caused by environmental damage, such as physical stress or hot tools. If left too long split ends can work their way up the hair shaft and create dry, brittle and fragile strands. Waiting too long in between trims, means you’ll have to sacrifice length when you do eventually get your hair cut.

DO A WEEKLY TREATMENT

A weekly deep-conditioning treatment, is important for all hair types and essential particularly in this environment as we are exposed to strong sun, dry air and air-conditioning. If your hair is coloured, fine or curly it’s even more important and you can even do the treatment twice a week. Pay particular attention to the ends as thats where your hair is most fragile.

SHAMPOO WISELY

When it comes to choosing a shampoo and conditioner, look to sulfatefree and paraben-free formulas that aren’t as drying to preserve moisture and be sure to also choose the right products for your hair type Massage the scalp while lathering to increase blood flow and stimulate the hair follicles, which promotes growth.

CHECK YOUR DIET

The healthiest diet for your hair is one that is based on real, whole foods and mostly plant-based. Foods rich in iron, zinc, vitamin C, B vitamins, and omega-3 are most commonly linked to stronger and longer hair. Stock up on foods includes seafood, beans, spinach and eggs for protein, leafy greens for vitamin C and wild salmon and nuts for omega-3 fats.

TRY A SUPPLEMENT

Biotin is the go-to when thinking about hair supplements, but most people already get enough biotin in their diet. BioSil is worth a try which contains ch-OSA, a trademarked combination of essential nutrients and minerals, that’s clinically shown to increase hair thickness, making it more resilient and shiny. And more than a few backstage experts and supermodels swear by Viviscal, a popular hair-growth vitamin that also contains silicon, along with amino acids and horsetail extract. 36

S MIND FULL OF PRESENCE Anahi Brown spotlights how we can all benefit from powering our days with Meditation and we’re already feeling productive.

low down. Take a breath. Catch yourself in the now. Are you well? Are you happy? Many times, we go through life rushing and running, taking shallow breaths on each step we take, not engaging fully in what it is that we’re living through, what we’re feeling, what we’re creating; that is until it’s too late. How many times have you put your head on the pillow at night, only to realise that the whole day has been a full blur. Colours, faces, tasks, thoughts. All completed, passed by, all left you drained yet unfulfilled, almost as if they never happened at all. This is what Mindfulness combats: a notion that busy, stressed and overstretched is synonym of status and achievement, the myth that Busyness means Business. Now, you might be rolling your eyes right now and thinking: “I am TOO busy to book time for meditation. I mean, who has time to sit and do nothing?” to which I can easily answer this: Most high-achievers, shakers and makers do, because they KNOW that committing to that time of doing nothing is precisely what helps them accomplish more. Don’t believe me? I can easily drop names and names of the countless celebrities and entrepreneurs who, in between fittings, extensive workout sessions and billionaire board meetings, sit down for anywhere between 20 and 60 minutes each day and focus on filling their minds with presence in the now, moment by moment, using meditation to fuel their greatness. Between the countless benefits that a mindfulness practice offers are: - Decrease stress and lower cortisol levels in the body - Enhance mental health and cognitive performance - Improve emotional self-regulation and response - Improve hormonal health and immunity - Lower heart rate and blood pressure - Increase life satisfaction and a sense of wellbeing In fact, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs have been among the most researched and reviewed protocols in the Psychological and Neurological field in the last decade, with countless studies and peer reviewed experiments that show how engaging in what experts call Formal Practice for only 20 minutes each day for 8 weeks does to our brains and bodies. The MBSR programs have been proven to be ideal in preventing relapses in depression, as well as offering great relief tools for patients struggling with chronic illnesses or pain, as well as other challenging conditions. It’s superpower? Shifting the attention from the noise of the to-do’s or the immediate emotion and the story we elaborate about it, to the full experience, detaching from it and noticing judgment as we validate it, fully present. By slowing down, we empty our brains and hearts and begin to process fully and move on. If this sounds like exactly what you’re looking for as you prepare to close 2018 on a high note, there are apps like Headspace (headspace.com), ‘Unplug: Guided Meditation’ (you can download it from ITunes) and Calm (calm.com) which offer amazing beginner programs to get you started. So remember, the next time you’re connected to a big emotions or feeling completely stressed and drained, before you react, stop, take a deep breath in, and create a mind full of presence to go back towards a peaceful mental space. @anahibrown.coach

TRESSES When Nancy Twine launched her hair care line, Briogeo, at cosmetics retailer Sephora in 2013, she was the youngest African-American woman ever to have her products grace the beauty giant’s shelves. Angela Beitz talks to her about her launch into the Middle East.

40

www.ohlala-magazine.com

N

ot many people would consider taking the leap of faith from a high-paying Wall Street career into the risk-laden world of a natural beauty entrepreneur, but Nancy Twine, ‘green beauty

expert’ and founder and CEO of Briogeo Hair Care, did just that and quickly discovered her true calling. Twine didn’t simply set out to make natural shampoos and conditioners, free of harsh chemicals and ingredients: She wanted to develop products that actually worked as well as every competing brand on the market, natural or otherwise. Briogeo is now the fastest-growing hair care brand at Sephora and is on track to earn $35 million in retail sales in 2018. Relying on her traditional, modest roots and deep passion for clean beauty, Nancy vacated her position as Vice President of the Commodities Sales division at Goldman Sachs, to follow her dream of becoming a natural beauty entrepreneur. What inspired you to start Briogeo? Briogeo was inspired by my family tradition of formulating personal care products from scratch at home, using recipes passed down through generations. In an effort to cut costs in supporting a tribe of eight, my grandmother developed her own soaps, lotions, and hair care products using only kitchen essentials, which became wildly popular throughout the community in West Virginia.

“It’s the number one best-selling shampoo and conditioner right now. I think in terms of natural products is about awareness, so many products are filled with parabens and things you don’t need.” Would you say your grandmother is your biggest inspiration? Absolutely, she gave me the knowledge behind clean, beautiful products and this set in motion a desire to inspire women to be mindful of health and wellness. I saw that there was a really big opportunity for a brand to really own that category in hair care because unlike skincare, makeup and body care, there was really no one doing what we’re doing now, which is bridging the gap between truly clean hair care products and high performance. How does it feel to be stocked in Sephora? It feels amazing and it really is such an honour and it has been a real game changer for me. They are such an incredible retailer and a prestigious brand and they have been so supportive. Its hard when you are a new brand and it’s been amazing to actually go into the stores in NYC (where I live) and see people shopping the brand. What is the most popular product and why are natural products so important? Typically, our masks is our number one best-selling product, but we just launched a really new innovative collection, which was our

Superfoods collection. It’s the number one best-selling shampoo and conditioner right now. I think in terms of natural products is about awareness, so many products are filled with parabens and things you don’t need. I know in this region there are also issues with water and hair loss and that on its own is a big enough issue without adding unwanted chemicals to your hair. Foundation in Paris, he is certainly in good company Speaking about his challenge of being an artist in the GCC, and specifically Bahrain Ahmed Alqasim has previously gushed that “Bahrain has some of the most talented artists in the Gulf.” He has forever remained hopeful and stayed strong in his belief that more support will come to local artists in the Kingdom who truly work hard and show that they deserve the support and the opportunities - which we wholeheartedly agree with. Furthermore, he stated that the world is such a small place now and independent artists have so many channels to distribute their music worldwide. Thankfully he’d set up their own professional studio, Likwid Studios, which allowed him and his band members to comfortably write and compose music and later record it without the pressure of paying an hourly or daily rate to any local studio. That also gave them the opportunity to record their own music the way they wanted to without having to resort to finding a production company which may pay for the recording expenses, but will certainly have a say in the production aspect of the music. Well, his time and dedication have most certainly paid off with the platform of Bahrain Jazz fest 2018 providing him the necessary recognition. @bahrainjazzfest

DARING, DREAMY AND DEFIANTLY DIGITAL

Another strong young lady in all her vibrancy and talent – there’s a good reason why Hala AlAbbasi is spotlighted this month. Shabana Adam talks to the Emirati Digital Artist and Calligraphist about creative spark, representations of modest life and the connection between fashion, religion and art…

H

ala AlAbbasi’s instagram profile is a gallery of bold colours and strong images; portraits of women, depictions of summer in the Gulf, and plenty of iconic imagery that exudes an overwhelming sense of fun and positivity. “Beauty and nature inspires me,” she says. “When I start to draw, I allow myself to be guided by the work which is in the process of being born. I have confidence in it. I do not think about it. “The hours on each artwork differs and depends on the style of the design, and the details which I dig into to create the final result. It took me years to get to where I am now by practicing art everyday,” Hala explains. It’s important to highlight that Hala’s creative side is a result of a type of art that has been around since the 1970s, and various names have been used to describe it. For the sake of modern day, we’ll go with Digital Art. This is where an image is predominantly computer generated, scanned or drawn using a tablet. Hala mostly uses her iPad Pro and Apple pencil as well as the Procreate App to produce her illustrations and portraits. She also utilises vector-drawing software with Adobe Illustrator by using the pin tool and shapes, which are outlined and can be filled with various colours and patterns. This tends to produce a harder edge or graphic look for her professional work. The process might be a cool and contemporary one, but the philosophy is still one of a traditional artist. “When it comes to the tools and techniques, I would say that art is not about the tools used to create it, but the vision, message, or emotion of the artist who can express their idea through lines, form, colour, pigmentation, composition and rhythm,” Hala says. “The artist can combine different features, effects, techniques and media to create their own unique vision.” If you’re new to the world of Digital Art, don’t let it intimidate you. The images are just as beautiful and daring, in some cases even more so, than a traditional pencil drawing or painting. Colour is more vivid, expression is deeper and there’s a whole new dimension added to something as simple as a portrait. “Digital art is like any other art,” Hala tells us. “It’s just created by using different tools than the more traditional arts. It took me years to draw everyday and experiment with different styles until I found what I love the most. www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Spotlight Q: Do you remember the very first piece of art or illustration that you created – what was it and how did it make you feel? A: During my childhood years at school, I remember when I first started to use the mouse on the computer to draw with Paint. I drew three girls and I loved how it made me feel, as it was a real hard challenge to put all of my focus and control on it. When I did the first one, I wanted to do more. Deep down I believed in my skills and abilities. I was always interested and I explored with different drawing applications and used adobe photoshop for the first time back then. I was obsessed to learn more and grow. I simply enjoyed every little process with every little detail I made. I knew then that I never wanted to stop. I wanted to embrace myself and let my passion and love for digital art drive me wherever it was going to take me. Q: What would you say to people who think that women who choose to dress modestly are not “free”? A: Modest fashion isn’t limited to Muslim women; it’s also popular internationally. Modest fashion shows love to women and speaks awareness and wisdom to others when it comes to covering up to feel comfortable and accepted within most communities. It feels great to be able to dress in a modern yet stylish and beautiful way that brings confidence to be more fashion-forward. The biggest brands and fashion companies have started to launch hijab and abaya collections within their clothing lines in the last two years. Muslim women can now express themselves freely. Dressing modest for women shows self-respect and love of each one to others, and lets them get creative freely without being judged by others. Q: What advice would you give to up-and-coming, young, budding illustrators or Digital Artists? A: I believe that every artist has their own creative ‘truth’ which I think matters the most. It’s about taking many tiny baby steps to achieve and maintain quality and continuity. It’s about commitment and dedication. It has to do with inhaling and exhaling. Getting in depth, letting it be with no expectations. What I love about art as a form is that it has no limitations or restrictions; art is a total freedom. Any beginner illustrator or digital artist has to start from somewhere, experiment with drawing apps, electronic brushes and tools that help you to translate hand motions, cutting and pasting to create a new look and pose real challenge to those who explore these new digital avenues until they grow internally to be extraordinary. @haluulie

58

www.ohlala-magazine.com

“So I decided to focus on the digital side of my artworks, because that is what reflects me the most, and I also enjoy it so much,” she continues. “When it comes to the digital world, I feel like it is much less restricted than conventional mediums for artistic integration and manipulation. “Moreover, moving in between reality and the digital world gives me a push to do more and be more, it gives me hope and joy and all I want is to reflect this to others. It’s my gateway, and it’s my freedom,” she adds. Hala is not only challenging critics in the industry who believe that digital work has a lack of connection to an audience, she is also championing a form of art that is often overlooked by putting her own stamp on it, whilst living a free lifestyle driven by choice. She often draws portraits of women, random faces, (she even produced our incredible cover) as symbols of beauty and strength. “Women in general, they inspire me the most,” Hala shares. “They reflect the real beauty and real power and strength in this world. I look for the depth in each woman, which can be found in all of us. Thriving women give meaning to life, and add hope to this world which reflects my purpose of creating artworks centered around them.” A refreshing perspective and one of the reasons why we chose Hala as our arts spotlight this month is, of course, to learn more about her opinions and experience of modest living as a young, Arab artist. It’s interesting to find that Hala, like hundreds of thousands of Muslim women everywhere, views modest fashion as a form of expression that boosts confidence. “Modest fashion gives me more options of clothing and to be creative in how I put together my outfits,” she says. “I now think outside the box and have developed an individual sense of style. It gives me the ability to dress in what I love but to add my own artistic twist to keep my outift elegant and simple, which in turn allows me freedom to express myself publicly.” When asked: how would you describe the connection between fashion, modesty, religion and art? Is there room for them all to exist side by side? Hala says: “If there is one thing that connects all four, in my opinion, it would be freedom. The freedom of choosing and matching colours, patterns, materials and styles and to be who you are as a woman. “Fashion and modesty reflect the world around it, and it could be for anyone which can be perceived and interpreted in a myriad of ways. Although, Muslim women who dress modestly are highly visible both on the streets of modern cities and in the media,” she adds. “When it comes to all four, it is important to reflect the beauty of modesty by being inspired by art, religion, and fashion.” Back to Hala’s creative flair, her love of digital art began at an early stage in life, and even back then, it was something about the vivacity of the images that stirred her. “I remember as a kid, I would always pay attention to graphic,” Hala recalls. “They were a reflection of what I loved and my thoughts. The look, materials, quality, colours and feel were so desirable to me. I would observe and study the colours, patterns, design and illustrations and soon enough I wanted to discover the digital world to create what I love the most,” she says. Hala’s energy is becoming of her work. She is unapologetically a digital artist, a thinker, a celebrator of life and a staunch supporter of women in all their forms – fierce, vulnerable, outspoken or shy – and you get to see this through her dreamy images. Alongside the modest lifestyle movement there’s a growing artistic revolution taking place – one that is challenging conventional art forms and garnering the attention of people in the Gulf and beyond. Hala is a part of this cool, unbound, self-determined 21st century crusade, and it’s time for the critics to sit up and take note!

CONSTRUCTIVE CREATION MÖVENPICK HOTEL BAHRAIN overlooks the sparkling waters of the ARAD BAY LAGOON but no look no further than the dazzling array of decadence at their Friday Construction Brunch.

The company brand is built upon the principles of

efficiency and simplicity and swift seamless service. Both the brand itself and specifically the Movenpick Bahrain exemplify this and the Friday Construction themed brunch is another shining example of embracing simplicity blending it with the finest of ingredients, products and topping it with flawless service. The expansive Al Murjan ballroom plays host to their ‘Construction’ themed Friday brunch. Construction may not immediately strike you as something synonymous with fine culinary experiences but the brilliance of this is in the detail. The hotel has underwent an incredibly ambitious renovation project which was decided would become a feature rather

than a flaw. The legacy of this forms the core of the staging within the ballroom. The enduring quest for sleek service within fabulous surroundings has not been compromised by the experience which now enhances the Friday Brunch buffet. The décor takes industrial chic to a whole new level but is on point with a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ attitude which makes fun of what could have been a truly disastrous situation. Scaffolding poles and boards, wheelbarrows, hard hats and a smattering of spanners, screws and hammers adorn the stations around the ballroom. It is a truly unique and refreshing brunch backdrop. The fayre is the finest of international favourites. Seafood is served with both elegant simplicity allowing the natural

flavours of the sea to dominate and with delicate sauces and spices which further complement and enhance this. Mövenpick’s ability to present and prepare seafood in the most authentic way never ceases to amaze me. One might expect that king fish, squid, oysters, shrimp might be the centre piece, the highlight of any dining experience but are one of many ambrosial offerings. The freshness and variety of salads is phenomenal, all presented as if they provided lunchtime sustenance for weary plasterers and bricklayers who have hung up their hard hats and high visibility jackets as they devour them. They provide a healthy option, an exceptional appetiser or side dish to accompany some of the decadent Middle Eastern and Mediterranean mains. The array of textures and palate of colours employed across every station indulges the senses enhancing the overall experience. In addition to the Oriental and South Asian spicy soupcons such as cauldrons of coconut curries or tantalising Thai treats, diners can also feast upon expertly charred roast meats matched with traditional accompaniments and freshly prepared sauces. The brunch not only affords diners the opportunity to experiment with an array of cuisines and styles of cooking, but, the quality of each station borders on being the best of a la carte standards, therefore those who hark after a ‘traditional’ three or five course meal will also leave feeling satisfied. The value and variety of a brunch with the innate quality of bespoke, signature dishes reminiscent of fine dining scenarios elevates the Construction themed brunch above most others. The live DJ and continuous entertainment creates an ambient setting for couples, corporate gatherings and groups. Amalgamated seamlessly with this is the family orientated Henna artist and balloon sculptures which occupy tiny hands and minds. A superb selection of elixirs and bubbles from both the grape and grain are yet again a cut above the standard expected of a brunch. Mövenpick have ‘constructed’ a truly fabulous Friday evening not to be missed! For information or reservations, please call +973 17 460000 @movenpickbh 62

TANTALISING TASTEBUDS LA VINOTECA BARCELONA’S Buena Vida Saturday Brunch has arrived as the epitome of ‘living your best life’, with its new dining portfolio and its atmospheric charm, it’s no wonder it is a Manama must.

T

he restaurant has recently reconstructed its iconic Saturday Brunch by injecting vibrant new dishes and drinks. The menu itself, glowing golden yellow, immediately transports you to the land of salsa and sangria. The décor extends throughout the restaurant and into the garden area, with deconstructed wine barrels forming the shell of booths for intimate dining. The garden, complete with mismatched grey and white Spanish tiled flooring climbing greenery and the image most synonymous with the Mediterranean, olive trees, is so enticing. Spanish culture encourages diners to embrace the philosophy of “más” - or more. More variety, more flavours and more courses! The Buena Vida brunch enables diners to savour Spanish staples whilst also incorporating the best of other cuisines such as a diverse variety of South American dishes. The delightful part is that this brunch is provided as table service and dishes are freshly prepared to order. The tapas style starters allow diners to sample five dishes ranging from seafood to salads. Succulent Gambas (shrimp) in a fiery yet fragrant chilli infused garlic sauce complemented perfectly by a zesty ceviche of mixed seafood. You may choose to stick to the fishy theme and sample the Sea Bass or their Crispy Calamari which are presented simply with delicious dips to accompany them. However, the Lamb Skewers and Beef Meatballs in a rich tomato sauce should not be overlooked. Greek salad garnished with crumbly feta perfectly offset the paprika infused, nuggets of pan fried chorizo. The options are endless, Huevos Rotos - potatoes, egg and chorizo

“The platters and dishes used to present each course add authenticity to the event. Rustic cookware, skillets and slate platters blend the traditional with the modern mediterranean.” and the Eggs Florentine both added a ‘desayuno’ - breakfast vibe to the brunch experience. The platters and dishes used to present each course add authenticity to the event. Rustic cookware, skillets and slate platters blend the traditional with the modern Mediterranean. The main courses were served to the backdrop of live performances of lilting Latin beats and melodies. Guests are enveloped by the intoxicating Latin vibe adding another element to the flavours of the Paella, Charred Sirloin Steak and Spatchcock Chicken. As with the starters, each main course is freshly prepared and delivered to guests within the convivial atmosphere of the restaurant itself or Al fresco in the garden. Whereas guests may enjoy a range of rations to start, the main body of the menu very much focusses on a number of stand alone signature dishes which exemplify the best of Spain, South America and the restaurant itself. Simple presentation mirrors the minimalistic approach to seasoning and flavours which allows the ingredients to shine. The steak was seared perfectly and the quality of the beef was what dominated the dish... each bite proved itself as mouthwatering. Fruity Spanish elixirs and familiar Italian Aperitifs alongside exciting Spanish twists on traditional brunch offerings complemented each course perfectly and were constantly replenished by the attentive hosts. The time to select a sweet finale was upon us and it was so refreshing to be presented with something that was neither miniature or bite sized as is so often the case at the brunch dessert stations. The Chocolate Brownie was perfectly fudgy and deliciously decadent. Traditionalists opting for the Crema Catalana will be wowed by the level of texture in the form of a delicious garnish of crumbled biscuit and a slab of pistachio biscotti. I am afraid to allow my mind to revisit the Banana and Nutella Fritoroll because simply mentioning the sumptuous combination oozing from the crepe - like jacket, wrapped around them makes my mouth begin to water. Flawless and totally fulfilling in every way. These creative conclusions will leave room for ‘nada mas’ – nothing more. Whether you are with family, friends or colleagues any of them will surely agree that the brilliance of Buena Vida is in the quality ingredients and the simple yet elegant construction of the dishes. or those of you who were not aware, Infiniti is the luxury vehicle division of the Japanese car giants, Nissan, and they have been providing the motor vehicle market with evermore impressive offerings over the past 30 years. The popularity of this brand has been increasing significantly in recent times and for very good reason. We at Ohlala were fortunate enough to secure an opportunity to test drive the all-new 2019 Infiniti PR QX50, complements of YK Almoayyed & Sons. Having test driven great Infiniti vehicles in the past, we were most excited to get behind the wheel of their latest design. From the moment we laid eyes on the vehicle, we found ourselves nodding at each other in approval. The best term to describe the exterior of the QX50 would be ‘powerful elegance’. The signature doublearch grille has been expanded in size and its deeper mesh adds a more aggressive feel to its demeanour. Although this car is a thing of beauty, the presence of this vehicle lets you know it is far more than just pretty face. The aerodynamically efficient exterior has remained true to the QX50 Concept as well to its QX Sport inspiration, and the result is what can only be described as a confident looking SUV, with deep character lines and an overall look of premium quality. This is definitely an SUV that will turn a few heads on the roads. The advanced level of craftsmanship continues inside the vehicle, with an 78

The designers have provided exceptional attention to detail and the materials and finishing touches of the cabin are simply stunning. These include open-pore wood accents, tailor-made leather stitching and beautiful quality surfaces. The interior is very spacious for both driver and passenger alike and its asymmetric layout has a user-friendly and relaxed feel to it. The second row of the QX50 houses sliding and reclining seats constructed with premium fabrics and comfort-focused support. There is plenty of leg and head room, ensuring everyone in the vehicle has a comfortable experience. The boot offers 65.1 cubic feet of cargo space including a hidden underfloor bin. The size allows one to fit a full-size baby stroller lengthwise without having to fold down the back seats, whilst the motion activated liftgate enables easy loading and unloading.

As our attention shifted to the performance of the vehicle, once again we were not disappointed. The QX50 has introduced what could possibly be described as the most innovative combustion engine currently on the market. Like two engines in one, it can shift seamlessly between performance and efficiency ensuring one has complete control over the driving experience. The impressive VC-Turbo engine produces 268 hp and 380 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm, whilst boasting the fuel economy of a 4-cylinder engine. This translated into a powerful yet smooth driving experience that allowed for us to completely relax as the kilometres effortlessly rolled by. The handling, cornering and braking system of this vehicle are exemplary and filled us with complete confidence in the vehicle. Perhaps even more important are the safety feature of this QX50. This car has been designed with the safety of you and your family in mind. Safety features include Forward Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Steering Assist, Advanced Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention and Distance Control Assist. The Head-Up display projects key details on the lower windshield helping to keep the driver engaged and informed. All of these features ensure that all occupants are in the safest environment possible when on the busy roads. By the time our test driving experience was over, we found it rather painful to hand back the keys. Our only real consolation was that we were sure Infiniti will continue to produce premium quality vehicles and that we will hopefully get to test drive them in the near future.

NAMSHI

MISS Ohlala

? E X U LAX L

MISS OHLALA SHARPENS THE BLURRED LINES ON FASHION STANDARDS IN TODAY’S SOCIETY SURROUNDING SPORTS LUXE. Fashion seems to be constantly pushing limits and crossing boundaries. It’s a mixture of innovation and recycled ideas that keeps new season lines fresh but that also ensures they have an element of familiarity. Should the inclusion of sports and fitness inspired pieces in many different forms across the collections from workwear to occasion wear be applauded or discouraged? The Manhattan sidewalks of the 80’s were pounded by city workers who pioneered the suit and sneakers look. Secretaries, Doctors, CEO’s and Shop Assistants alike donned uniforms and suits with running shoes in order to make their commute a little more comfortable. Practicality initially taking president and starting a new fashion trend that would grow and leech throughout all elements of society. Catsuits, leg warmers, tracksuits and baseball jackets have all been leaders in the fashion stakes at different points during the 80’s, 90’s and now. However, has something that was based on practicality now metamorphosed into innate laziness and slack standards with regards to how we present ourselves? Many fine dining restaurants, nightclubs and hotels insist that guests and clients adhere to a dress code. No place for sneakers or T-shirts without collars and shorts as they are distinctly frowned upon. However, across the pond in Hollywood or on the Cote D’Azur models, actors, singers and writers combine haute couture with leggings, training shoes and dri-fit technology on catwalks or red carpets. So, should standards be relaxed to match new socially accepted trends? Or should we uphold tradition and ensure that expectations remain high? 98

www.ohlala-magazine.com

This seems to be a commentary on changes not just in fashion but society as a whole. At one point businessmen and women would not have ventured into the office without a collar, jacket or tie l, or to coin a phrase... without being ‘suited and booted’, but now companies encourage a more relaxed approach with dress down days. Certainly in warmer climes such as this traditional dress is favoured over western convention. So it seems that perhaps there is a place for evolution in terms of social expectations regarding appearance and presentation. Throughout history fashion has reflected the modes of society combined with practical necessity and methods of adhering to social expectations. In Victorian England ankles and shoulders were covered, waists were pinched and bottoms accentuated. Men would not venture outside without a hat, gloves and tie. This reflected standards and expectations which simply don’t apply in the modern age. We have evolved and perspectives have shifted as ethics and morals have advanced and expanded. Shabby chic and industrial finishes with exposed brick work and rough edges have replaced sharp edges and immaculate finishes. Therefore it seems that blending casual accessories or styles with formality has become the norm. Rather than being lax or lazy incorporating sportswear or casual pieces is a very deliberate choice with a lot of thought given to it. Instead of illustrating slipping standards it might actually represent more attention to detail and an asserted effort to reflect modern social conventions within fashion. Lazy or Modish? Slapdash or chic? That’s for you to decide and ultimately dress accordingly … but forever fabulous!
