EDITOR’S LETTER
HOUSE OF HOLLAND
I
n today’s youth-obsessed world, just walking out the door, flicking on the TV, or checking your Instagram feed can be a veritable minefield for your self-esteem. Even when you know deep down that you’re scrolling through someone’s highlight reel, it still impacts you in real life. Thankfully, a slew of insanely stylish and savvy femmes in their 60s are breaking the mold with authenticity, honesty, and a zero-face-lift policy. These women are proud of their unconventional looks, disregard trends for personal style, eschew gender conformity for feminism, and exercise their sharp wits, all while they perfect the art of aging gracefully. Their punk-rock attitude is catching on, and luxury brands have taken notice, tapping women in their 60s, 70s, and even 90s for major campaigns over the latest ‘It’ girl and looking at them for inspiration on the catwalks (Glance over to our Style Focus pages!). This made me think about their persona as modelling isn’t the only arena where these women shine. There’s something liberating about ageing, ditching your demons, and accepting the body you’ve been given once and for all and we can all learn a lot from respecting our elders. Allow yourself to be in a sunny disposition, allow your positive personality to shine through, and allow the ageless philosophy of ‘it’s what’s on the inside that counts’ to flow over you... as it is the only thing that truly counts, isn’t it?

A CLASS ACT EMPORIO ARMANI is a hub of individuality that encourages everyone to be themselves; an identity which is characterised by the projection of one’s own personality, finding character, strength and uniqueness in the differences in each of us.
WOMENSWEAR COLLECTION
AUTUMN/WINTER 2018/2019 Post meridiem, all day long. An unrestrained, night-time mood subverts dressing codes, mixing discipline and sparkle. The mood is spontaneous. Everything is mixed up: what is traditionally designed for the evening is worn in daytime, with no need to show off or rebel. Rhinestones draw pinstripes on incisive suits. Classic mannish patterns light up with touches of lurex; metal sequins and small mirrors reflect and multiply the light. The silhouette is sharp: masculine trousers and jackets, fluid overcoats and short skirts are combined following no rules or prescriptions. The logo recurs and remarks, as a print or as a jewel. Accessories amplify and highlight the idea of dressing up as a play of contrasts: rethought cowboy boots are paired with boldshaped bags. Textures and finishes are focal, enhanced by a rich palette of blacks and greys lit up with touches of turquoise, green, and cobalt blue. Night-time seductions, in a metropolitan scenario.
MENSWEAR COLLECTION
AUTUMN/WINTER 2018/2019 The collection has a decisive, urban spirit, with an emphasis on the idea of new elegance: precious but not frivolous. The city wardrobe has a dynamic tone, combining the innovation of the lines with that of the materials. The slender and sharp silhouette is evidenced in small-shouldered, double-breasted suit jackets, worn with flowing trousers, a wool trench coat with technical buckles, and a seamless kimono-style bomber. The outerwear pays homage to the world of mountain hiking and outdoor activities, with curly-haired sheepskin coats and pony-effect goatskin jackets. Surfaces are treated and processed to produce tactile effects: chenille sweaters with fade-out patterns, and jacquards with stylised trees and clouds creating a poetic camouflage-effect on sportswear; butterfly wings flutter like flowers on new tuxedos. The palette is a dense amalgam of greys, blacks and deep blues, energised by the pure white of shirts, the cool tones of greens and blues and the metal accents of gold and bronze. Accessories are functional, but come in refined materials: shoes with sharp lines, and capacious handbags featuring embossed patterns. The latest collection is available at Emporio Armani, Moda Mall. POETIC
ASTRONOMY
Contemplating the vault of heaven, VAN CLEEF & ARPELS dreamed of living in time with the cosmos: capturing the dance of the planets, tracing the constellations and reaping the stars, to live among them day after day. That dream has inspired precious watchmaking creations, in keeping with the Maison’s distinctive Poetry of Time®. Whether illuminating the twelve constellations of the Zodiac or reproducing the movement of the heavenly orbs, their virtuoso mechanisms bring all the magic of the universe to life on the wrist.
THE POETRY OF TIME
Ever faithful to a poetic view of life, Van Cleef & Arpels instills a distinctive dimension into the art of watchmaking: that of dreams and emotions. A blend of inventiveness and fantasy, the Maison’s creations interpret the measurement of time as an invitation to imagine, wander and revel in happiness. The Maison draws from its history and emblematic sources of inspiration to depict the poetry of each instant. New tales of love and luck take their places alongside creations evoking Van Cleef & Arpels’ heritage. Fairies and ballerinas tick away the hours, while the rhythm of nature meets that of the cosmos. Representing the various watchmaking collections, each piece relates a moment of grace and enchantment.

Dazzled by the spectacle of the heavens and stars, Van Cleef & Arpels pays homage to these marvels with its Poetic Astronomy™. A starry sky, the constellations of the Zodiac, the journey of the Sun and Moon, the ballet of the planets: the creations combine the poetry of the heavens and the measurement of time to endow each instant with a unique emotion. Throughout the collections, watchmakers, jewellers and craftsmen deploy their savoir-faire to bring miniature tableaux to life, ushering the onlooker into a world of contemplation and dreams.

BEAUTY Column
On Trend ANGELA BEITZ dissects the top beauty trends you need to know for AW18, from the best make-up looks to the hair styles you need to master, these are the looks you’ll be sure to see this season
A cool change is always welcome after a long, hot summer in the golf and there’s nothing better for beauty lovers than a whole new set of beauty rules and trends. For AW18, make-up looks seemed to be split into two distinct sections. Many make-up artists seemed to emulate the overall trend of a laid-back yet empowering aesthetic that dominated the catwalk and bold looks that are usually seen in summer are also present and make for a striking change.
DARK RED LIPS Get ready to go bold with matte red lips that are a highlight this season with many make-up artists adding drama to collections with ruby, crimson and wine-coloured lips. Powerful and empowering lip shades were seen at Rochas and Alexander McQueen, paired with groomed brows and clear skin.
GOLDEN HOUR Accentuate your eyes with a touch of gold this season for a new take on eyeliner. Many make-up artists swapped black liquid liner for gold, with shimmering gold glitter and gilded pigments a mainstay of AW18. In New York, Ulla Johnson lined the upper lid with gold glitter while Alice McCall used subtle touches of shimmering glitter in the inner corners. 36
www.ohlala-magazine.com
GO NATURAL AW18 collections pointed towards contemporary casual fashion trends and make-up also reflected a more laid-back, modest approach to beauty. All-natural beauty was the theme for many designers and brands such as Lanvin, Loewe, Ralph & Russo and Isabel Marant kept things classic with perfectly groomed looks. Healthy complexions, soft blush cheeks and moisturised lips gave a simple, natural aesthetic, ideal for replicating on a daily basis this autumn.
THE ONLY WAY IS UP Hair trends are kept relaxed and undone with natural, loose texture a main feature on the catwalks for AW18. When hair was styled, updos were a standout trend, with chignons and buns a chic way to keep hair out of the face. At Simone Rocha, models’ hair was side-parted and swept into an elegant and intricate chignon, with pretty plaits twisted to form bow-like details. Carolina Herrera also pinned the hair back, twisting it into plaits and pinning it back.
GRAPHIC COLOURS For some reason, colour is banished whenever winter sets in but this season it has a reason to stick around. The graphic colour trend heroes the boldest and brightest of hues in the most striking of ways. Although, if daring is not your cup of tea, you’ll be happy to know this trend has various intensity levels to suit every comfort zone: Dial it back to just a thick coloured eyeliner top and bottom if you want to ease yourself in.
THE MORE PINK THE BETTER If you have a fear of pink because you think it comes off too girly, it’s time to get over your phobia because this popular colour is here to stay. A trend that’s been trickling into your beauty kit over the past few seasons, now it’s going next level with a triple-threat approach. And instead of feeling overly feminine, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know its letting off seriously sultry vibes. The way to wear the triple pink trend is in tonal hues across your entire makeup palette – on the eyes, cheeks and lips. It will warm up the complexion as we head into the colder months, and contrasts beautifully with a muted winter wardrobe.

RAPUNZEL’S PROTOCOL
ANAHI BROWN gives us the 411 on amping up our lacklustre locks with some nutrients and habits for unbeatable results.
O
h, Rapunzel, let down your hair! Who hasn’t encountered this story and wished to also have Rapunzel’s shiny, strong and abundantly beautiful hair? I mean, I don’t know about you, but I would love to be able to use my hair as a rope, and only she has accomplished this so far. Fortunately, this wish doesn’t have to stay in the land of Happily Ever After. Beautiful hair is an inside job that depends as much on our genetics as it does on our diet and the care we give it. However, in a market saturated by pills, gummies, masks and even potions that promise beautiful hair, sometimes it feels like we’re asking one of the seven dwarfs instead of relying on science. So, let’s talk hair care with facts so we can create our own Rapunzel Protocol to recover, heal, nourish and protect our hair. Furthermore, so that we can achieve its optimal expression and health. These are the best nutrients you can bring into your diet right away:
38
www.ohlala-magazine.com
• Protein: When you think beautiful hair you rarely think about eating a steak; however, proteins are the building blocks for our body, so focusing on consuming good quality options will help your body in creating healthy cells to grow hair from. My favourite source for hair (and nails) health? Collagen, which is an amazing amino acid that we rarely consume and lack terribly. • Iron and Zinc: These minerals are involved in the health and performance of hair follicles (aka where our hair comes from) as well as in tissue oxygenation, growth and repair. How to tackle them? Indulge in Zinc and Iron rich foods like spinach, shellfish, mushrooms and meat. • B Complex: This group of water soluble vitamins play a huge role in cell metabolism. They are all important for our general health, nonetheless Biotin (known as B7, Vitamin H or Coenzyme R) and B5 are particularly relevant in supporting our adrenals, which stimulates hair growth, as well as thickening hair fibres and increasing its pliability, helping it better withstand the wear and tear of life. Want a way to up their intake? Start with eggs, avocados, nuts, dark leafy greens, meat and poultry. • Vitamins C and D: These two fight cell ageing as well as support hormonal balance, so consuming them supports with healthier looking hair that grows healthily thanks to our happy hormones. To get your daily doses, make sure to add bell peppers, citric fruits, kiwis, fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as safely expose yourself to the sun. It’s true that not everyone is genetically coded to have huge amounts of thick Coachella-worthy hair as much of our hair’s texture, quantity and pattern will depend on genetics. However, if you nail your diet and use some of these hacks, you too can have a luscious and healthy mane within your own biology… who knows, you could redefine your own Rapunzel story! @anahibrown.coach

OVERNIGHT SUCCESS
Angela Beitz speaks to London-based beauty entrepreneur, Maria Hatzistefanis, who founded her ground-breaking skincare group, Rodial, in 1999 by identifying a niche for treatments targeted to specific skin concerns
W
ith a growing global beauty empire, Maria Hatzistefanis’ results-oriented products excite with evocative tongue-in-cheek names such as Dragon’s Blood or Stem Cell Super Food. She has three brands – Rodial, Nip + Fab, and Nip + Man which are now sold across 35 countries worldwide. Today, the cutting-edge products are available in the most prestigious stores around the world, while high profile celebrities such as Kylie Jenner front the brands’ campaigns and this wonder woman has now just written a book, How To Be An Overnight Success. What gave you the idea to write your new book? As my social media following has grown through my @mrsrodial account, I started getting a lot of questions on how to start a business and people asking me for advice. And I thought I‘ve been through this journey of starting a business from a back room at home and have a lot to say. And then every time something crazy happened at work I would think, this has to go in a book. And one day I put it all together, created a story line and came up with the book, How To Be An Overnight Success. What is the secret to starting your own business? An idea that you really, really believe in. It’s going to be hard in the beginning, people will doubt you and it’s easy to lose belief in what you are trying to achieve. You have to be completely motivated and know that you are working towards something you believe in. How did you develop your brand? I did it all myself at the very beginning. I found suppliers, labs and chemists. I worked on the formulations, the packaging the design. When I managed to get Rodial into stores I would pack the orders up myself and go in and sell on the shop floor. Once Rodial started getting traction I was able to expand my team and get an office and take Rodial to the next level. I’m still 100% hands on in the same way I was in the beginning, I just have more support now. How do you juggle work and home life? I work, my husband works, the boys have their school and sports too, we are all busy. I am working on finding a balance and it’s juggling both daily but we try to spend quality time in the evenings, weekends and holidays. What are the most popular products from Rodial & Nip+Fab and why? The global Rodial best selling product is the Dragons Blood Sculpting Gel which was the first product to be launched within the Dragons Blood
range. It is a XXL volumising gel which works to sculpt the face. The Rodial Banana Powder is the best seller from makeup. The Glycolic Pads are the best selling product from Nip+Fab and are truly iconic and loved my celebs such as Kylie Jenner. How did you come up with the names of your products? Customers are very savvy nowadays and they know what ingredients to look for in skincare. Right now I like to be straightforward with the key ingredient in the product, and call it the ingredient. For example the Rodial Vit C line which is quickly becoming a bestselling line, and the upcoming Booster Drops which will come in Glycolic, Retinol and Collagen. What’s next for the brand? Rodial make-up is still a baby and needs more time to grow. My focus is to grow makeup with more global counters- watch this space! www.ohlala-magazine.com

Scientific Luxury American and British Board certified Plastic Surgeon DR.YANNIS ALEXANDRIDES specialises in facial reconstructive and rejuvenation surgery. As a pioneer in innovative cosmetic treatments he was among the first to advocate non-surgical treatments and founded 111SKIN product range. Luckily, our beloved Dessange Bahrain stocks this world-altering line and our skin has never been more grateful. As I get older, I swear I feel like time is flying by faster. I know this is a common thought process, but my word, is it true? I still feel like my 16 year old self who was more concerned about what she was doing with her friends that night than things like bills and what I’ve missed from my shopping list. My fiancé and I had this conversation the other day as well…when did we become adults? Why is “adulting” so hard? But the reality is I’m definitely not getting any younger. I just wish time would slow down a little bit! With every year that passes, I notice different things about my skin, body, and even hair. While I am fully aware I definitely don’t look my age, that number still rings in my ears every time I have to speak it or type it out. I notice the new grey hair - I still don’t have many, but I found one the other day and was like “AHHHHH!”, or the change in my skin texture, or some stretch marks on my hips from weight fluctuation. It’s resulted in me reaching for the anti-aging products a little more often than I would like to admit. A lot of my friends ask me about my skincare routine as I have a plethora of information working in the industry, but I recently added Space Aqua Booster and Space Anti Age Day Emulsion products into my regime and I will never look back. I’m very particular with what skincare products I use because I have extremely sensitive skin, so, this has been an absolute godsend. We’re all prone to dryness and dehydration, especially after what has felt like the hottest summer Bahrain has seen in years. Thankfully 111SKIN’s Aqua Booster certainly packs a positive punch with its concentrated hydrating ingredients increasing hydration levels by a whopping 30%, maintaining this level throughout the day and night. Furthermore, this booster has mild exfoliation effects that increase the absorption and efficiency of this product. The lightweight Space Anti Age Day emulsion is ideal for

dehydrated, combination and irritated skin as it minimises the visibility of lines and wrinkles whilst also restoring volume thanks to its active ingredients. A lot of us don’t know what certain ingredients achieve when they are listed on the back of products, but, one of my favourites is certainly Hyaluronic Acid which naturally occurs in our bodies, but, unfortunately decreases in age. This ingredient enhances hydration and allows for a youthful plumping effect which all skin types can benefit from! Living in the Middle East can play havoc with your skin therefore Nac Y2 - which is a fusion of three ingredients - improves antioxidant levels providing the optimum environment for Collagen and Elastin production and reduces the effects of environmental damage. Not to mention the anti-inflammatory, anti-blemish and repairing properties that Linoleic Acid and Vitamin Complex have as additional miracle workers. Rest assured, these products are your new friend for life. After massaging one pump of this emulsion you will see improved firmness, elasticity and texture as well as combating traits of dullness over time. It’s also not greasy when applied, which I’m truly thankful for as I’m really picky about that factor as I don’t want anything to negatively affect how my makeup applies to my face. I’ve been using it for about a month now and I apply it in the morning and at night and I swear it’s made all the difference in the appearance of my skin, even reducing the dark circles that previously aged my face. My skin has been normal as far as oil goes, and my breakouts have dramatically reduced. You certainly can’t put a price on my new found accelerated confidence so 111SKIN is an investment I will most definitely be sticking to… and stocking up on! If you’re looking for some mind blowing antiageing products then I highly recommend giving 111SKIN a chance as it’ll easily become the core component of your skincare regime. After all, even the Mr has been caught stealing it on occasion... @dessangebahrain

THRILL OF THE SHOP Jayne Green talk to our favourite fashionista Ms. Alessandra Rossi in a fabulously honest face-to-face interview with the Off Season President of YOOX & THE OUTNET.COM
W
omen love the shopping experience. What’s the attraction of online fashion sites when a digital experience takes the emotive aspect of retail away? The digital aspect is game-changing as it allows us to access this experience at any point of your day wherever you are. It is a completely unique experience and it enhances the choices associated with ‘where’ and ‘when’ you choose to shop. What are the biggest challenges of situating yourself as a purely online platform? Being online allows us to expand globally and we can be situated anywhere in the world. It also means that we can expand our brand globally whilst also continuing to serve locally. So, being purely an online platform is more of an opportunity than a challenge. The way in which people perceive online shopping can be a barrier; more so with the older generations as opposed to the millennial generation and people who are regularly online who embrace the benefits of said platform. We must ensure that the quality of service is the same online as it would be for someone walking into a shop and buying a product. The ease of returning products, fast and effective shipping are all tantamount to the success of online shopping and we work hard to ensure the customer will not see a difference in the level of service received. We hope to embrace the philosophy of creating a personal, intimate approach to service which is convenient. The human touch and rapport side of customer service is achieved through live chat and showcasing brands at live events. The alluring tagline ‘Everything Reduced But The Thrill’ is synonymous with the OUTNET and we are indeed thrilled. What is the secret of THE OUTNET’S success? It is undoubtedly the quality of brands and items which we showcase and offer from carefully selected brands; offering the best possible choices for our customer base. We have over 50 designers and around 50,000 styles to cater to everyone’s needs. This sounds huge but in reality our lines have been carefully constructed from the very best that is available on the market at the present time. We also spend a lot of time employing the responses from Customer Feedback combined with the expertise of our buyers to inform our future choices. Our customers are very knowledgeable with regards to fashion and their expectations from high-end products such as ours and they have played a huge part in driving our success and focussing on the quality of our edit and products. Our service and 46

range is second-to-none and the discount is just an additional bonus, but, we don’t feel that it is what attracts our customers, solely. The brand itself and our vision is the secret to our success. A little PR birdie told us about your plans for the OUTNET and we are thrilled. Tell us more about what this means for regional designers across the Middle East. We are constantly scouting the wealth of talent amongst new designers. Ultimately we strive for a unique and global assortment of styles and brands but we want to cater to the local needs and expectations of the customer. Therefore utilising local talent and products is very important in personalising the service for particular groups or regions. Catering to the needs of customers globally is not just about translating the site into the regional language but also making it specific to the needs of the customers in that region. A bespoke service for each region using an informed local team. Does the concept of a discounted product offering make it difficult to maintain premium fashion positioning? The key to ensuring that we maintain our standards of premium fashion lines is that we have a rigorous selection process whilst still maintaining a vast array of choices. We ensure that customers feel they are getting a very good deal whilst still receiving luxury items encompassed with a high quality level of service. With social media dominating marketing do you have any upcoming plans to collaborate with regional influencers? This is extremely important to us and recently at our live event in the Bulgari resort we brought together some of our most important clients and influencers. They chose styles from our Ramadan edit and created content to post online and shared their vision with us based on the products they selected. The process involved us sharing our vision for what we wanted to produce from the Ramadan edit with them. They then chose their favourite styles and showcased these on what can best be described as the everyday, live catwalks which are their blogs and online posts. Influencers play a big part in guiding spending habits in the Middle East region therefore their input and impact is very valuable to us. Where do you see THE OUTNET in the next 5-10 years? The geographical expansion of THE OUTNET is the key to our furthered success and growth as a business. The brand will develop as we are able to become more relevant within the countries of the Middle East but also looking at global expansion beyond this region. Can you tell me an interesting fact about yourself ? I am an Italian living in London and this came quite late in my life. Normally this kind of lifestyle is more synonymous with young people, enjoying the nightlife and the buzz of the city but I am enjoying it very much. It feels like home to me. My colleagues also say that my collection of shoes is crazy and that they wait most mornings to check out what I will stroll into the office wearing next. Shoes are definitely my thing.
FACEBOOK OR INSTAGRAM? INSTAGRAM FAVOURITE BEAUTY PRODUCT? I LIKE BRANDS SUCH AS CRÈME DE LA MER BUT I PREFER TO USE A VARIETY OF PRODUCTS WITHIN A RANGE RATHER THAN STICKING SOLELY TO ONE. THE BENEFITS OF DIFFERENT PRODUCTS SHOULD BE COMBINED. FAVOURITE DESIGNER? I LIKE TO CHANGE MY STYLE REGULARLY JUST AS FASHION TRENDS CHANGE AND EVOLVE. I ENJOY EXPLORING THE RANGES THAT DIFFERENT DESIGNERS CREATE FROM ESTABLISHED DESIGNERS THROUGH TO MORE RAW, YOUNG TALENT. I WOULDN’T SAY THAT MY WARDROBE IS DOMINATED BY ONE DESIGNER BUT BEING AN ITALIAN MY HEART LIES WITH DESIGNERS FROM MY HOME COUNTRY SUCH AS VALENTINO AND DOLCE AND GABBANA. FAVOURITE PERFUME? CREED. @theoutnet / theoutnet.com

URBAN DAYCAY
Jayne Green heads to the exclusive island Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay to indulge in the ultimate ‘cosmopolitan oasis’ and sink her toes into their astounding white shores. Four Seasons is without
a doubt a favourite of many, and it’s easy to see why. Just fifteen minutes from our airport and situated in the heart of Manama - with its recently opened blonde beach and peppermint-hued sea showcasing the impressive Arabian Gulf skyline, this privately owned beachfront resort welcomes anyone seeking a celestial get away. The designer of Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is the same designer as Burj Khalifa in Dubai - Skidmore, Owings and Merrill so there is no wonder why the awe inspiring detailing forces you to admire such grandeur from the moment that you drop your car off at valet. The interior design of the suites and rooms mirrors the surrounding environment with a soft palette of beige, green and gold that mimics the colours of the greenery on the island. Whilst the stunning outdoor swimming pool area and secluded beach set within the 500,000 square metres of reclaimed land means never having to scrabble for a sun lounger or sumptuous cabana. Designed in intricate detail, The Spa at Four Seasons Bahrain Bay is the second largest in Four Seasons’ portfolio. Encompassing four interconnected buildings woven together with pathways and gardens featuring modernities that meld clean, contemporary design with local tradition and materials. The stylish spa is filled with light and surrounded by exotic gardens, trees 58

and pools. I was guided by experienced therapists through the beautifully designed hydrotherapy circuit at The Spa; an aromatic steam room, a chic salt inhalation room, invigorating jacuzzi with water jets and cool mist room, not to mention their vast indoor pool. All of which allows for maximum benefits prior to your treatment therefore we would highly recommend that you arrive early. Such an eponymous brand certainly know a thing or two about wellbeing: focusing their treatments on the holistic and spiritual, as well as the physical. Their aptly named ‘Pearl’ treatment rooms provide a polite nod to the heritage of Bahrain where pearling trails were formed in abundance. My therapist, began with a soothing foot cleanse and massage, explaining that my Energising Massage would include hot stones with a little bit of stretching. My shoulders were extremely knotted prior to this treatment and I’m glad for my therapists rhythmic hands to provide the ultimate deep tissue technique. Prior to treatment I was offered a selection of oils to choose from, I chose the ylang-ylang and grapefruit infused argan oil due to its mood-enhancing and restorative properties. After I lay face down for the body massage, my therapist started kneading the coconut-sized knots

in my neck and shoulders into submission using said pure, fragrant oil. This aromas began to calm my mental state and I allowed myself to ‘shut-off ’ for once… It certainly did the trick! Emerging from the treatment in a state of serene somnambulism, I could do nothing but retire gracefully to one of their post-treatment relaxing areas, where I was served ginger tea and dates. Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s seven restaurants offer an opportunity to scoff your way round the world without leaving the resort, however, I decided on their authentic mediterranean restaurant ‘Vento’ which is ideally situated near the outdoor pool area. Vento channels a sophisticated beach club vibe to showcase Italian cuisine amidst other evocative dishes. By day, with its rope infused decor and its tropical setting is a laid-back beachside restaurant serving fresh seafood and cuts of meat. By night, soft lighting illuminates decoratively carved, intimate seating areas swathed in mountains of soft cushions. After a gastronomic feast of Sauteed Jumbo Prawns and Double chocolate lava cake there was only one thing for it - a lounging session at The Beach! Mesmerising azure blue seas and pristine white sands awaited me curving along the private island’s sun-drenched southern shore, the Hotel’s 160-metre expanse of white sand offers a full spectrum of world-class amenities and seaside activities, making it the perfect summer retreat for all the family. I admonish you to indulge yourself with a Thai Coconut Fruit salad whilst you sunbathe, expertly crafted by Executive Chef Kim Hyung it innocently showcases itself as the ultimate refreshment - perfectly instagrammable and deliciously quench-thirsting. Just like Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay where you will drink in every moment.

HEART’S HIDEAWAY Finishing schools, exquisite watches, bank accounts, clocks, chocolate, cheese and the safe haven for the Von Trapp’s in the ‘Sound of Music’. We explore sensational Switzerland… A wise lady once said that it’s tough to find a place not to
like in Switzerland and even upon arrival, I was immediately smitten with it’s beguiling qualities. There was only one place which could possibly be our starting point; iconic, notorious, the epitome of cool... The Geneva Montreux Jazz Café located in the Arrivals Hall of the airport. Brimming with memorabilia and unique contemporary touches the café allowed us the opportunity to explore a little of Switzerland’s heritage, musical and pop culture whilst devouring a delicious pasta bowl garnished with delectable parmesan. After a short transfer we arrived in Lausanne. It is easy to say that Lausanne could be heralded as the epitome of tranquillity and indulgence. The cobbled streets and historic architecture combined with the lakeside vistas make it the perfect hub for indulging in cultural, gastronomic and sporting pursuits. The Olympic Museum gives a fascinating insight into the country’s sporting heritage displaying an array of memorabilia and modern, interactive installations. The Royal Savoy Hotel’s ornate cornices and plaster work embraces its heritage whilst giving way to contemporary design statements such as graphic chandeliers piercing the space in steel and glass. Gentle, delicate wrought iron branches woven with fairy lights, suspended alluringly. This variety and veracity for stretching the limits of design, whilst cherishing classical splendour has brought the Savoy not just to life but into the 21st century. The sepia toned photographs displayed throughout the rooms and public areas have captured the hotel’s Art Nouveau heritage which still runs strongly throughout the soft furnishings and décor. Rooms are decadent and luxurious. With thoughtfully selected additions such as Bvlgari cosmetics and state-ofthe-art technology the guest bedrooms are both nostalgic and cutting edge chic. The lake area in Lausanne exudes a holiday vibe with families barbequing by the lake, swimming and strolling the lakefront. Trendy bars such as ‘La Jetee de la Compagne’ provide places for locals and tourists to gather, mix and mingle. Leaving the lakeshore on the Belle Epoque Paddle Steamer afforded us spectacular views of the expansive lake and Alps beyond as we set to anchor in France. The quality of the food on board was a pleasant surprise. A selection of the finest
antipasto, cheeses and spit roast meats was followed by the most indulgent chocolate mousse which not only lingered on the palate but was one of the culinary highlights of our trip. I awoke full of eager anticipation of our exploration of the old town, the trendy Flan area, the farmers market and speciality food stores which nestle within the cobbled streets. Lausanne combines Swiss Alpine charm and architectural splendour. ‘La Ferme Vaudoise’, a speciality food store was brimming with the bounty of the region. This included cheeses, ham, cured meats and nutty rye breads. In addition the ‘du vin’ we sampled is considered some of the most delicious in Europe but is not exported and so can only be enjoyed within Switzerland’s borders. The stunning Brasserie de Montbenon played host to our luxuriant lunch. The variety and quality of French inspired cuisine was phenomenal. Moules frites, delicate Vol au Vents and handmade Ravioli accompanied staples such as snails and roast pork. The terrace
“I awoke full of eager anticipation of our exploration of the old town, the trendy Flan area, the farmers market and speciality food stores which nestle within the cobbled streets” with its canopies and canvass umbrellas provides diners with the perfect space to both see and be seen. After a leisurely afternoon spent exploring the sights and delights of the lakeshore and town we readied ourselves for our visit to the iconic Beau -Rivage Palace and the Café which shares its name. The décor exudes simple, classic sophistication. Open booth style seating, candelabra styled chandeliers and high ceilings enhancing the sense of grandeur. The restaurant menu was designed to highlight the technical expertise of the chefs’ but also their inventiveness and use of local, high quality products. perfectly alongside more adventurous, dynamic dishes such as scallop and Salmon Carpaccio, whole baked Lobster with delicious Al Dente pasta, Zucchini Flower stuffed with Pike and Crayfish Sauce and King Prawns with Green Papaya. It is no wonder that The Hall of Fame is brimming with royalty and all manner of celebrity. Including Nelson Mandela, The Jordanian Royal Family and Prince Albert of Monaco. I’m more than confident to trust their esteemed opinions! And so to the final leg of my voyage of discovery around Vaud region, the Swiss canton along Lake Geneva, Vevey and more specifically the Grand Hôtel du Lac. Vevey and more specifically the Grand Hôtel du Lac. The Hotel is an eclectic mix of styles of décor which even individually would be splendid but when combined, in this setting , achieve nothing short of magnificence! Filigree and floral chintz, original tiled flooring, vaulted ceilings, windows swathed in heavy drapes and detailed, hand crafted wallpapers illuminated by grand crystal chandeliers suspended above. During my time around Lake Geneva I have come to the conclusion that Switzerland is about the best of everything and in terms of lodgings Hôtel du Lac would challenge the best of the best. After spending a morning being expertly tutored by Michelin Starred Chef Mr. Thomas Neeser. We proudly surveyed the delicate entrees and amuse bouche that we had constructed. Vivid flourishes of colour, contrasting textures, unique seasonings and flavours transformed familiar dishes into those worthy of accolade. A fascinating insight and more importantly a delicious treat for anyone, not just self-confessed foodies. As we surveyed the menu at La Veranda within Grand Hôtel du Lac we did so discerningly following our culinary master class. 64

The afternoon uncovered more of Switzerland’s fascinating history. Following another charming cruise aboard the Paddle Steamer ‘L’Italie’ we made our way to Chillon Castle which was once a highly important strategic military location and is now the most visited historic attraction in Switzerland. Montreux is synonymous with Jazz and all kinds of music but has hidden depths. Visitors can meander and mosey through the covered markets and take a ride on the funicular. As we turned every corner yet another charming experience or sight greeted us. Ze Fork with its enviable lakeside setting in Vevey was the piece de
resistance. The philosophy of Ze Fork is to embrace the idea of Trilogy. Three interpretations of the same product or theme. This may include foie gras or pork or themes such as ‘The Lake’ or ‘The Farm’. Each mouthful tantalised the senses and just as you were beginning to think you had tasted the best version of each product… the next interpretation bettered the last. Absolutely magnificent, inventive and unique. My final morning was both highly educational and also hedonistically indulgent. Meeting with the notorious Dr Burgener who has spent over twenty years creating a portfolio of high tech skin advancements and beauty remedies as well as Spa’s in Europe and the Middle East, most notably in the Four Seasons Dubai was fascinating. The Swiss very much take an holistic approach towards wellbeing and so it seemed very fitting to embrace this and turn our attention to ‘treating’ our insides at Läderach. Again, the tour gave us a fascinating insight into the heritage of chocolatiers and the industry they have created, although by far the highlight of any trip to Switzerland, for chocoholics like myself, was the chocolate tasting and crafting session. The unctuous slabs that we carefully handcrafted and then devoured were brimming with the bounties of the region and beyond. It’s safe to say that if you plan to travel extensively over the next few years then you should be cautious about visiting Switzerland. The reason? I doubt that any other region or country could compete or indeed compare as it is true that once you have visited Switzerland you will have been spoiled for anywhere else. It truly is the epitome of perfection...everywhere. www.lake-geneva-region.ch www.ohlala-magazine.com

Whether travel was by land or sea, man perforce had to call upon the experience of generations gone before to ensure his safety, but sea transport was always perilous for many reasons. This is a journey of Classical and Medieval Islam narrated by people who lived those days; they will tell us their impressions about the cultural, material and commercial significance of the Classic Ships of Islam, their role in the life and interaction of coastal communities; the long tradition of seafaring in the Indian Ocean and seaborne exploration – the route to China. BUON APPETITO The Gulf Hotel Bahrain has a strong line up of Middle Eastern and Far Eastern inspired restaurants and so it seems fitting that the highly acclaimed Michelin Starred Chef Giancarlo Perbellini brings a taste of Europe, like no other, to the line up at La Pergola by Perbellini.
G
iancarlo Perbellini has been a force in Italian cuisine for many years. Born in the Verona Valley he has clung to his roots as an Artisan Chef and gains much inspiration from his roots in the rural tradition of cooking where the land and its produce dominates. It is no surprise that he has crafted his dishes, service and presentation to such a height that he has gained a plethora of Michelin Stars across many of his restaurants. It is only fitting then that he chooses an icon of gastronomic variety and quality such as The Gulf Hotel to revitalise La Pergola restaurant and embrace it as part of the Perbellini stable. As we walked into the restaurant the fusion of simplicity and luxury immediately struck us. As we were to discover this was a vein running throughout. The décor was minimalist but sophisticated . The lighting features which ran throughout the restaurant with circular patterns cut out of dark wood illuminated from behind creating unique light boxes and panelling. Crisp white tablecloths, gold rimmed plates and delightfully heavy cutlery all gave an indication of the quality of things to come. The selection of Anti Pasti was inspiring and yet reassuringly familiar. Shrimps, Carpaccio and Calamari Fritti fulfilled our desire for traditional Italian staples whilst carrying with them unique additions such as hazelnut oil, horseradish cream and fried capers. The showstopper was without doubt the Roasted Rose Veal with boiled eggs, tuna cream and capers. No normal mind would be able to envisage such flavours being such a culinary triumph for the palate. One of the things that most frustrates Italians about non-Italians is their inability to treat pasta as anything other than a main dish. It is designed to fit seamlessly between a starter and main course of either meat or seafood. At La Pergola the inspirational ‘Primi Piatti’ pasta and

risotto dishes take age old traditional staples and give them an injection of modernity. Chickpeas with burrata foam, shrimp and tangerine reduction would never have graced a farmhouse or fisherman’s table. However the core techniques and tastes lie firmly rooted in Italian heritage. Spaghetti with an elegant ‘pomodoro’ sauce, linguine Allo Scoglio and homemade ravioli are all executed in such a way that you could be sitting either in a homely farmhouse kitchen or, as we were, a high end chic eatery in a bustling hub of business and leisure. As our ‘Secondi Piatti’ arrived the aromas which rose from our platters caused us all to inhale a little more deeply. The presentation of the Fillet of Angus Beef with indulgent smoky mash potato and the Crispy Escalope with tomato mayonnaise further highlighted the theme of simplicity and luxury. Exquisite produce, innovative flavours presented with elegant simplicity. As the plates were cleared barely a morsel was lef; we simply had to finish every last bite. In addition La Pergola offers a select range of pizzas which, as one would expect, use the minimal number of quality ingredients to deliver authenticity but also contemporary flair. The conclusion to dinner arrived in the form of Affogato and a delicately crafted meringue bombe. Indulgent gelato served with piping hot espresso was, again a true mouthful of Italian heritance. The interactive element of seeing the frozen quenelles drenched in coffee begin to melt, creating the ultimate café crema was special to say the least. The deep purple berry coulis was the perfect contrast to the crisp, crumbly meringue and the balance of flavours was sublime. One of my favourite Italian proverbs about food reads ‘A tavola non si invecchia’ which literally translates to “At the table with good friends and family you do not become old”, and as we left La Pergola we did so feeling that, actually, we had add a renewed sense of our culinary life! @lapergolabyperbellini / www.gulfhotelbahrain.com 78

Showcasing over 20 new additions, LINKS promises to delight you with mouth-watering bowls, succulent grills, and delicious dishes that all come premixed with LINKS’ unforgettable vibe. With the cosmopolitan and urban visual direction that is already present, it only makes sense that LINKS gave its menu a beautiful face lift too. The food innovation that has been developed is like no other, showcasing classics with a twist of style that only LINKS can accomplish. The menu also embraces the South African palate with exciting new additions of a sometimes surprising nature, such as South African Malva Pudding and...wait for it... ‘Cheesy Garlic Snails’ from their Lounge Menu - I’ll let that one sink in for a minute - but, honestly, these little fellas are incredibly moreish and an absolute must-try! The culinary journey doesn’t end there and lovers of sumptuous cuts of meat are not forgotten as the menu maintains its renowned carnivorous stance with the most delectable of marinades that are succulently rubbed such as, Sirloin, Tenderloin and a selection of ribs, not forgetting the all too popular certified Angus Beef T-Bone that has already taken international markets by storm. Inspired by Executive Chef Paul Gindra’s travels across Shanghai and Beijing, comes the Ramen section of the menu, complete with an unparallelled infusion of ingredients are the tender Hoisin Glazed Tofu and Crispy Roast Duck selection - which luckily all come with a handy bib! Flavourful ‘Power Bowls’ have also been introduced which are all the rage in major foodie capitals across the world - yay! With a number of interpretations that have become a staple, continuing trend and remain as the perfect social food for the dedicated foodie, it is no surprise that LINKS have given the public what they want. The culinary journey doesn’t end there and lovers of sumptuous cuts of meat are not forgotten. Bahraini elements are apparent across the menu such as Lamb Shank Ouzi and Grilled Hammour which are inspired by Middle Eastern aromas and spices. Speaking of seafood, the Rose Harissa Grilled Octopus with celeriac and bean puree, peppered wild spinach and polenta fries was a personal favourite of mine and cooked to absolute perfection, as expected. 80

LINKS’ innovative drinks menu presents a superb offering of whites, reds and bubblies; inspired fused drinks and also refreshing spirit-free drinks too! ith so many car brands on the current market, there are few that have managed to set themselves apart from the rest, as well as to demand respect with the mere mention of its name. Volvo is one brand that has managed to accomplish this. Producing cars since the late 1920’s, this Swedish vehicle manufacturer has consistently produced respected offerings over the years. They now hold a status usually reserved for cars with a much higher price tag. When Motorcity invited us to appreciate the new Volvo XC40, we accepted without a moment’s hesitation. The small SUV segment is rapidly increasing in popularity and looking at the lines of this new Volvo XC40 compact premium SUV, it wasn’t too difficult to work out why. With muscular lines and a bullish stance, this vehicle looks like it is ready to take on the world. It is not a bulky car; it merely looks like it has been designed for performance and it has to be said that its size, shape and stance just look comfortable on the road. The sleek yet solid design has youthfulness about it, yet maintains the established presence that all Volvo vehicles manage to command. The 19” 5-spoke, black, diamond cut alloy wheels help to display the class and road capabilities of this vehicle, 86

whilst an aerodynamic and colour matched spoiler adds a sporty touch. The front and rear skid plates enhance its powerful appearance whilst the door mouldings give the exterior a more exclusive look. We found the interior to be even more impressive. The first feature that caught our attention (besides from the amazingly comfy leather seats complete with pillow headrests!) was the 3-spoke sports steering wheel. It is covered in the finest soft leather with a “silk metal” décor panel. It has a fantastic feel to it one that urges you to get onto the road. The ingeniousness of the interior design is obvious when looking at the new storage ideas. There are functional storage spaces in the doors and under the seats as well as a special space for phones, including inductive charging, a fold out hook for small bags, plus a removable waste bin in the tunnel console. The 2-Zone Electronic Climate Control guarantees your comfort and the cooled glove box is a novelty. The panoramic sunroof is yet another feature we appreciated. The XC40 houses the Sensus Navigation System that is fully integrated into the vehicle and allows one to connect to the internet for a greater navigation experience. With this simple and easy to use system, one can enter destinations on the navigation via voice control, or through either the touchscreen buttons or buttons on the steering wheel. A voice provides you with driving instructions well in advance of each new direction. Smartphone integration consists of both Android and Apple CarPlay, allowing you to use

your smartphone safely and without any hassle. The voice function helps you to read and write your messages and to access contacts in your phonebook. Once out on the road, the feel of the 2.0 turbocharged, four-cylinder engine was exactly what we had hoped for. Producing 252hp, this car certainly has enough power and the all-wheel drive system gives one a sense of control in all conditions. This smaller sized SUV not only possesses a good turn of speed, but handles corners superbly and boasts a perfectly responsive braking system, whilst the 8-speed transmission ensures a very smooth ride. As fully expected from Volvo, they have placed a huge amount of attention on its safety features. The host of safety systems includes a Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Blind Spot Information System, Run-off Road protection and mitigation as well as Cross Traffic alert with brake support. This constantly monitors the driver surroundings for potential hazards, such as other vehicles, pedestrians, or even animals, that could cause an accident. These systems will safely intervene as soon as an imminent collision is detected, and will even guide the driver safely back onto the road if they detect the vehicle drifting off-course. By the time we returned to the Motor City showroom in Sitra, we understood why this good-looking, high-performance, safety first vehicle deservedly claimed the 2018 European Car of the Year Award.

MISS Ohlala
HOUSE OF HOLLAND
FASHION FRENZY MISS OHLALA TALKS ABOUT THE CONTROVERSY OF FASHION IN THE MEDIA AS OF LATE AND WEIGHS UP SOCIETY’S LEVEL OF BODY SHAMING . “Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it!”... is there? The shockwaves that were caused recently when a 5ft 3 inches tall 300 lb model adorned the cover of a very famous fashion magazine were felt throughout the industry, social media and dinner tables around the world. Was this due to her size? Was it to do with the potential health issues associated and glamorizing this? Were people in awe of her ability to ooze sex appeal despite being over double the average weight for a woman? This peaked my interest to muse about the implications of the fashion world and society as a whole. Within every faith the general consensus is that God loves infinite variety and man emulates this in the different forms he takes. However, in some circumstances , such as fashion, there is a necessity for regularity and a standard form. Models must provide a blank canvas upon which ‘artists’ can adorn textures, shades, vibrant hues and styles according to trend and season. Voluptuousness or obesity have never been something which has played a part in the world of haute couture where Size 0 reigns supreme. This may be down more to designers and stylists requiring this uniform figure in order to make ranges and new season lines for shows. Is it therefore more to do with logistics and business rather than a statement about body type or size? Although it can be damaging to create such unattainable physical icons, such as those in the fashion world, it can also be equally unhealthy to suggest that someone who is at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and stroke should be heralded as a role model. Words such as ‘acceptance’, ‘celebration’ and ‘embrace’ pin balled around social media and news programmes and the debate that ensued was a fascinating insight into sizeism and how different groups are perceived in society. Naturally the usual suspects wagged fingers in the direction 98
www.ohlala-magazine.com
of lifestyle and fashion magazines, suggesting that a variety of shapes and sizes was just as important as colour or ethnicity. Fashion will always be about striving for the ideal in terms of design and quality. Models must be chameleon-like and be able to change their skins according to the designer or range. It is also imperative that there is a consistency and ‘standard’ with which designers can work. There are parameters set which allows them to showcase their work to the very best of their ability. Although this does not mean that the industry is suggesting that everyone should adhere to these parameters. Just the professionals whose job it is to bring fabric to life! Should we embrace difference and variety? Of course ! The problem comes when people go a step too far and create an issue when they are actually trying to dispel one. In trying to highlight something positive, due to lack of thought it becomes something negative and causes outrage instead of celebration or acceptance. If only it was as uncomplicated as Madonna originally suggested …
