Editor’s Letter The weather is still hot and humid, and it seems that any fresh breeze is still far away from us in this part of the globe. However, on September 21, autumn is officially here, and the fashion world is ready to embrace the cold months ahead with their AW 2021/2022 collections. As fashion addicts at OHLALA, we picked our favourite trends to welcome the new season into our wardrobes and we share them with you in this exclusive fashion spread (pg 34). Our Style Focus pages are also dedicated to the new season’s must-haves. After reading our magazine, open your closet and examine it with different eyes — you might find that a tiring piece is now the new hot pick (pg 14). Still in the fashion universe, we talked to Noof Al Shekar from NS by Noof to learn more about her creative and architectural handbags (pg 42). Our beauty pages bring you the latest ways to improve your unique beauty kit; discover a new blush (pg 50) and an exclusive limitededition powder (pg 54). We went for pampering sessions in two different beauty havens on the island. I got treated to an LPG (an endermologie lipomassage) and nail art (pg 56) while one of our contributors went for a relaxing couples’ massage (pg 60). We also celebrate the industry with our OHLALA Spa and Wellness Awards 2021 — nominations will be announced soon. The desire to enjoy beautiful and exciting things also applies to our food choices. This month, we had an authentic Italian feast in one of Bahrain’s revamped dining spots, and it was one to be remembered in months to come (pg 78). As usual, we ended our journey behind the wheel of a car; this time, we got to drive an imposing SUV (pg 86). “The secret of great style is to feel good in what you wear.” — Inès de La Fressange

To me, glamour is an attitude, a sense of confidence that’s not limited to a time or a place. The Core collection pinpoints the fundamental visual DNA of our brand with three distinct identities that we will reinforce and return to every season. A distillation of our essence. It’s who we are. The Core Collection offers glamour every day – anytime – anywhere. Sandra Choi, Creative Director

CRYSTAL The Crystal has been with Jimmy Choo since the very beginning – it underscores Jimmy Choo’s multi-faceted identity, the brand as a jewel in and of itself. Capturing light, refracting, reflecting, crystal is like a self-contained spotlight. The signature C shaped Crystal buckle is played with for evening and for day, existing 24/7 in the wardrobe of the Jimmy Choo muse.

A 21st century emblem, the Monogram is a celebration of the identity of the brand. The interlinked JC logo has evolved into a signature repeat print. Explored through techniques of jacquard weaving and embossing on leather, giving a confident and elevated hallmark across both casual and formal styles.

The timeless elegance of the Pearl is modernised in exaggerated proportions punctuating product in playful applications including heels, flats, sandals, handbags and clutches. Jimmy Choo is exclusively available at Saks Fifth Avenue, City Centre Bahrain.

Luxe Tee

The Italian luxury brand, Max Mara is completing 70 years of fashion, and has selected seven artists to be printed on seven special-edition T-shirts to celebrate. As one of the precursors of today’s prêt-à-porter, the brand tells a bit of its history with these T-shirts. One portrays the photographic shots by William Wegman of the elegant Weimaraner dogs wearing the Max Mara 101801 camel coat. There are also nautical themed graphics by Brian Grimwood that were in the Max Mara SS 2016 runway show and the graphic prints seen on the AW 2021 catwalk in Milan, inspired by Erberto Carboni’s work. These images swirl in a continuous dance between the past, present and future. The T-shirts are made in pure cotton jersey and feature appliqué panels specifically crafted to enhance each artwork.

Defiantly Feminine

The Parisian fashion house Zadig&Voltaire is collaborating with the Band Of Sisters (BOSS) community in a capsule collection. Born in 2014, the group comprises more than 200 enterprising and independent women from the fields of design and culture. BOSS strives to promote dialogue, sharing and mutual assistance between women. With a strong sisterhood bond, they are committed to combatting violence and inequality. The French painter Natacha Pachal, an active community member who has been collaborating with BOSS for years, has been invited to create the visuals. She uses powerful slogans on the capsule’s styles, like ‘Stronger Together’ and ‘Women boss rules the world’. Two illustrations are featured on a hoodie, a jersey T-shirt and a denim jacket, must-have casual styles that Zadig&Voltaire X BOSS spice up with a colourful arty touch, injecting optimism and a cheerful attitude.

The ball of fire above us is still shining very bright and warming (heating, burning) our days. However, it is time to assess the autumn and winter 2021/2022 trends to embrace the new season in style!

he fashion world has endured the ongoing pandemic. Readapt and recreate were the words of command that designers understood and interpreted in their creations. Some fashion shows happened with safety measures, distancing chairs and reducing attendance, while others opted for just a photoshoot to showcase their new collections. Either way, designers in the four main fashion capitals showed us that they are done with comfort and dull stay-at-home structures. Bold hues and party-ready are the new vibes of the cold season. Brands such as Givenchy, Alberta Ferretti and Paco Rabanne showed

sparkly dresses for that grand event or party you’ve been waiting for since this whole pandemic situation started. When it finally happens, it will be epic, and an over-the-top outfit will be required! But if you want something less flashy, denim is the call, as seen at Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen but use a different approach, cover your accessories in blue jeans. Fancy loafers are the classy touch to your looks in the footwear arena, while fashionable clogs add a folksy element to your casual outfits. Get your wardrobe ready to embrace the stylish trends of autumn and winter 2021/2022.

Love them or hate them, clogs are a retro staple that bring back the hippie vibe of the '70s. The bulky footwear adds a touch of vintage style to your looks, ensuring that your fashion radar is working at its best! They are traditionally made with wood or reinterpreted in rubber.

This multi-layered textile is the warmest choice of the season. Sewn in different shapes, it traditionally comprises three layers that can be thin or thick, depending on the materials used. DESIGNER

Focus

Architectonic Designs OHLALA spoke to the designer Noof Al Shekar from NS by Noof to better understand the concepts behind her eye-catching clutches and accessories. Come into her geometrical world with us! OHLALA - When did you know that the world of fashion was going to be part of your life? Noof Al Shekar - I always had a passion for fashion, and the idea of having my brand started in 2009. The statement behind my label revolves around jewellery and handbags, the two things women cannot resist. OHLALA - How is your process of creation? What are your main inspirations? Noof - The process starts from the 3D shape of the clutch and then breaks down to the geometric pattern in the brass sheet that shapes the clutch. My inspiration is mainly from architecture and old jewellery. My creations are complicated to construct and bring to life, and that’s what makes them 42

www.ohlala-magazine.com

unique. We use sacred geometry [the underlying geometry in nature] as a spiritual symbol and combine it with semi-precious stones that have the Earth energy to balance each piece out. OHLALA - Your pieces are very architectural. Would you say that this is a trademark of your brand? Noof - Yes, my love and passion for architecture do reflect on my brand. In the beginning, I used lots of Arabic and Islamic patterns to reflect my heritage in my work. However, the more I educated myself about architecture and sacred geometry, the more my pieces took bolder shapes and looks. It became the soul and heart of the brand.

OHLALA - How important are the materials used in your handbags and clutches? How do you source them? Noof - We always use the best material to create a high-end brand. The brass used is all gold plated, and the lining is from genuine leather. We are now launching a new line of sustainable bags using recycled plastic and ocean waste; we have still maintained the brand DNA by keeping the geometrical patterns. OHLALA - You don’t follow trends; instead, you create timeless and eyecatching accessories. What is the formula? Noof - Our pieces are indeed classic and timeless. I believe in owning something unique that will stand out and be with you for a lifetime. Trends are fun and inspiring, but you touch the clients’ sense of fashion by creating unique pieces. OHLALA - You are a mum and an entrepreneur; how do you balance your work life with your personal life? Noof – Well, I started the business after having my first two boys - they are young men now - and I always had so much energy and wanted to direct it into something that represents me and make them proud. Having a niche brand did help as well with the small quantities and limited clients that look for something unique and different. Now they are all grown-up and very supportive of me. The denim designs were all created with the input and cooperation of my eldest son Abdulla who is going to study architecture this year. OHLALA - What is the piece of advice that you would give to all creative minds out there wanting to start their own business? Noof - Start today, start with an idea, dream about it, think about it, and it will be created. Life does happen; don’t let that stop you. Take baby steps, and you

are still moving towards your dream; baby steps are better than no steps. Set your priorities in life and put in an ethical goal, and you will achieve the world. OHLALA - Do you think that being born and raised in the Middle East influenced how you design your handbags and clutches? Noof - Definitely, I am a very proud Arab and Muslim, yet I am a very openminded person and love to learn and explore different cultures and religions. They all have symbols and geometric shapes, making it a very interesting playground to create my own patterns, structural styles and characters reflected in my designs.

Fanning A

Historical Flame The luxury jewellery house Garrard revisits its Fanfare collection and gives a new interpretation to the eye-catching pieces in its new Fanfare Symphony range.

44

www.ohlala-magazine.com

JEWELLERY

H

istory and opulence are part of Garrard’s biography, and expanding one of its most remarkable collections is part of keeping up with tradition and innovation. Elegance and glamour are the words to describe the opera masquerades and their attendees’ outfits. The indispensable accessory of the time, an intricate fan, is the inspiration for Garrard’s original Fanfare collection. They were the height of fashion in London’s theatre district when Garrard opened its first boutique there in 1735. Garrard’s designers revisited these spirited masquerades for the new Fanfare Symphony jewels, adding the symphony of colour unleashed as ladies swirled around the ballrooms in their extravagant gowns. The new collection contrasts the signature coloured gemstones’ vibrancy with the unique beauty of ornamental hardstones. Expanding the theme of colour that infused the original assemblage, the designers opted to work with hardstones for an exciting new range of shades. Mood boards with different combinations of gemstones and hardstones were created, and the most harmonious pairings were selected to compose the new jewels, more than 40 in total. The gemstone and hardstone matchings in the Fanfare Symphony collection are a captivating reminder of this fun-loving period in Garrard’s history. Designed to accentuate each jewel’s primary hue, these are the matchings: pink tourmaline is combined with pink opal; emerald with malachite; sapphire with lapis lazuli; aquamarine with turquoise; yellow sapphire with cacholong; ruby with hematite; and white diamond with mother-of-pearl.

Edit

The new collection keeps the original line’s generous size and strong silhouettes; however, a more stylised Fanfare outline has been introduced. Distinguished by bold flashes of hardstones set to mimic a fan’s pleats, it appears on stylish Fanfare Symphony stud earrings and delicate pendants. Also, asymmetric rings featuring two delicately angled fans, that sit side by side upon the finger for double impact, are introduced in the collection. The Fanfare Symphony jewels are an evolution of the Fanfare collection launched in 2018 which quickly became one of Garrard’s strongestperforming ranges. “The Fanfare Symphony collection celebrates the wonderful diversity of ornamental hardstones, which have such a different look and feel to traditional gemstones,” explains Sara Prentice, Creative Director at Garrard. “The array of new designs brings an exciting dimension to the collection.”

Its dial features the Flower Power symbol – the destination’s emblem.

In Italy, a brand new Hublot boutique is opening its doors in the Tuscan seaside resort of Forte Dei Marmi. The inauguration is marked by the launch of a watch specially designed for the occasion: the Classic Fusion Chronograph Boutique Forte di Marmi. Available in a limited edition of 35 pieces, this 45mm diameter model is notable for its beige case, dial and rubber strap. It is powered by the calibre HUB1143, a chronograph movement with a 42-hour power reserve. Still on Italian soil, Capri is the next stop at Hublot’s boutique in the Rue Vittorio Emanuele, where customers can purchase the Classic Fusion Chronograph Boutique Capri. With a titanium case topped with a ceramic bezel whose azure colour echoes the skies above the Bay of Naples, the model is available in only 30 pieces. The journey continues to Mykonos, in Greece, where Hublot has just unveiled its tenth model dedicated to the famous Cyclades Island. Based on the iconic Classic Fusion Chronograph, this 2021 version marries dark blue with the warmth of rose gold, recalling the island’s breathtaking sunset. A bladed rotor on the dial symbolises the Kato Myli – the island’s iconic windmills.

Arriving in Turkey, a new boutique has opened in Bodrum. The city faces the Aegean Sea, and its sparkling colours have inspired a new 25-piece limited edition Hublot watch. The dial and strap of the Classic Fusion Chronograph Boutique Bodrum are in blue, which is beautifully complemented by the white chronograph counters and strap stitching. The 45mm titanium case houses a Hublot calibre HUB1143 movement. Hublot’s collections are available at Bahrain Jewellery Centre (BJC). @hublot www.ohlala-magazine.com

Mastering Light Givenchy is expanding its commitment to add extra radiance to your skin with its new Prisme Libre Blush. Glow-up, girl! new make-up product will always put a smile on a beauty queen’s face, and Givenchy is doing that by adding a new item to the Prisme Libre line. Conceived in 2006 by Nicolas Degennes, Givenchy’s Make-up and Colour Artistic Director, it started with a loose powder that has proven itself to be an ultimate light source. The powder was then followed by Prisme Libre Skin-Caring Glow, a hybrid foundation containing 97% ingredients of natural origin with a formula that includes a 90% skincare base to act on the skin’s radiance and hydration. Now, the Prisme Libre family is growing with its first four-colour loose powder blush – the Prisme Libre Blush. The new product promises to release colour, boost your glow, sculpt your face and naturally enhance your cheeks with utter lightness. The concept of this blush revolves around the fact that each palette brings four different complementary shades that blend perfectly, creating a new dimension to your make-up. Lasting up to 12 hours, the Prisme Libre Blush comes in six different ranges and their names are a nod to the brand’s couture DNA referencing the finest materials used in the fashion label. Mousseline Lilas and Taffetas Rosé are the best matches for very fair skin types. Voile Corail and Organza Sienne are designed for light to medium complexions, while Popeline Violine and Flanelle Rubis are flattering on medium to dark skin types. For the best application of this 3D-effect blush, Nicolas Degennes gives us some tips. For a sunny effect, add a stroke of your favourite shade on the bridge of your nose. And if a natural but lively result is what you are looking for, sculpt your features by using the Organza Sienne or Flanelle Rubis palettes (depending on your complexion tone) instead of a bronzer. @givenchybeauty

Floral Dream Escape to a joy-fuelled land with the relaunch of Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia. The fragrance is now lingering in an eau de parfum version.

T

he Italian fashion label Gucci is relaunching its Flora Gorgeous Gardenia with a new eau de parfum revealing a more highly concentrated expression of the original eau de toilette. A joyful floral signature, the scent is built around the gardenia flower that can be white or yellow with a strong bouquet. Since the dawn of time, these blooms are said to have been used in elixirs and magical potions. Taking inspiration from the idea that it has mystical powers, the glorious white gardenia note is blended with solar jasmine grandiflorum absolute. The modern floral signature is introduced by a cheerful pear blossom accord, which encourages wearers to burst with joy, while a touch of brown sugar accord adds a delicate sweetness to its sillage. The revamped packing portrays a new elongated bottle with lacquered pink glass and a shiny gold cap. A painting of colourful flowers, created by artist Vittorio Accornero for Gucci in 1966, stamps both the bottle and outer carton. The fragrance campaign brings Miley Cyrus, a versatile artist that represents a generation driven by authenticity and self-expression. “Who says that someone with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude can’t live in a world of flowers and embody the Flora universe?” says Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s Creative Director. The #FloraFantasy campaign is a journey through a candy pink world, inspired by Japanese anime and filled with pop references. @guccibeauty 52

Guerlain’s Terracotta collection has been reinvented with two new and exclusive limited-edition powders. Bring on the perfect light!

ometimes the ideal sunshine-glow effect on the skin is better achieved with the help of the right make-up.Guerlain is introducing these limited-edition powders to play with the sun’s light on the face. Terracotta Light Bloom and Terracotta Sun Bloom capture the fresh glow of daybreak and the soft warmth of the setting sun. Terracotta’s organic-shaped compact reveals two sunny, blooming powder flowers infused with subtle golden shimmers and either a delicate pink or a coral centre. Terracotta Light Bloom captures the energy of the rising sun, promising all the radiance of the daylight. It brings the fresh, dewy pink light of a summer dawn. Guerlain’s bestselling N°3 shade is enhanced with a delicate pink centre and fine golden accents for a radiant blush finish in

this powder. The Terracotta Sun Bloom has taken inspiration from the end of a summer’s day when the sunlight dims and the horizon fills with gold and amber reflections. This compact is also a twist on the brand’s N°3 shade, but, in this option, the centre comes in a coral tint and an array of gold shimmers that reproduces the intensity of a stunning sunset. The compacts can be applied all over the face or in touches to veil the complexion with sunlight. When the shades are mixed, they warm the skin and enhance the natural glow of a tan. If you opt to apply separately, the blush tones highlight cheekbones. Terracotta Light Bloom and Terracotta Sun Bloom create a made-to-measure illuminating effect. Shades and strength can be altered to suit any mood.

OHLALA’s editor Fernanda Langhammer embraced another blissful day at this haven of beauty and relaxation called Dessange. 56

www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEAUTY Boutique

D

o you know that comforting feeling of going to a place ‘where everybody knows your name’? That’s how I felt when I stepped into Dessange for another beautification experience. It was nice to see that the place was bustling with ladies happy to have their looks improved and back to their routines in the health club. Of course, all under strict safety checks by the friendly and patient staff at the reception. Joie, the lovely spa manager, was waiting for me and ready to share all about the treatment I was about to experience. Dessange is always up to date with the latest innovations in the beauty and health areas, and I knew I would try something exciting once again. I couldn’t be more curious when Joie introduced me to my therapist, Chenda, and she handed me a full-body suit called endermowear (a personal and opaque item of clothing specifically to be used in the lipomassage). She then asked me to put it on and prepare for my LPG (an endermology lipomassage) session. As I knew I was going to have a massage that would transform my body, I gave it a good check in the

changing room’s full-length mirror before putting the suit on. In the spa, Chenda gave me a form that needed to be filled with personal information and a specific request about the areas I would like to concentrate the massage on. For me, the critical parts are the most common ones, the whole hip region and stomach. The LPG is a 100% non-invasive mechanical massage that stimulates the natural breaking down of fats. It helps you get rid of cellulite, tone and smooth the skin, promotes slimming, firming and skin tightening while increasing blood flow and lymphatic drainage. The balance between the production and elimination of fat is a natural process involving slimming cells (adipocytes). Despite ideal personal health practices and regular physical activity, the process of storing fat tends to increase over time. This results in the appearance of excess fat and cellulite. This patented slimming technique reactivates the fat release process (lipolysis) to erase localised fat and imperfections. LPG’s mechanical stimulation triggers deep biological responses such as reactivation of fat release, collagen and elastin production.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

57

After learning about this incredible treatment, it was time to lie down on the spa bed and enjoy 35 minutes of intense massage. The session is done with the help of the LPG equipment that seems to suck your skin and is applied by the trained and certified hands of Chenda. The machine has different programmes that are chosen according to your consultation and problematic areas. I can’t say it is a relaxing massage. Still, after you get used to the suction and the therapist’s movements, it becomes pretty enjoyable — mainly when you can use your imagination and picture your fat being sucked away. You will really achieve the best results after six to eight sessions, but I can honestly say that after one, I removed my suit and gave that check in the mirror again, and my skin seemed tighter and smoother. I know I had only a glimpse of the treatment and that it gets better and better in each session. However, I was happy to realise that it is possible to achieve a better version of my body with the proper massage, allied to a healthy lifestyle that includes good food and regular exercise. After this body improvement session, it was time to move to the bright and comforting area of the beauty salon where Amy, one of Dessange’s senior nail specialists, was waiting for me. Hand sanitisers and the constant habit of washing my hands have destroyed my nails and cuticles, and they were screaming for help. Amy is not only an expert in transforming your nails, but she is also a nail art connoisseur, and that’s what I was going to get, total care and uniquely styled nails! For a long time, probably since the early 2000s, I have been filing my nails in a square shape, never changed — until now. Amy gave my hands a complete makeover. She made my nails round in a pointy shape (the ones we see on Instagram and dream about) and treated my hands with a paraffin glove. The paraffin hand treatment consists of a disposable glove with warm melted paraffin where you insert your hands in and leave for about 15 minutes, the necessary time to harden. 58

www.ohlala-magazine.com

It helps to make skin supple and soft, adding moisture even after its removal. It also eliminates dead skin cells and has an anti-ageing affect. Everything my exposed and badly treated hands needed. They also offer the same paraffin treatment during a pedicure. Can you imagine this warm and hugging feeling on your feet? Definitely coming back for this, adding to my wish list right now! After experiencing this deep moisturising treatment, it was time to apply some SolarOil (a natural blend of jojoba oil, sweet almond oil and vitamin E) highly recommended by Amy. My nails were now ready to

be painted in a summery design. The colours were luminescent yellow, white and pink, taking the shape of ladybugs, butterflies and checks; the result was harmonious art – each fingernail with its unique motif. I was ready to put on my best swimsuit and show off my improved curves and colourful nails. And that’s how another day ended in beauty heaven for the editor here, a very well-enjoyed one that I hope you also get to experience. Get your body, hair, nails and spirit (because the treatments go beyond physical appearance) transformed at Dessange.

THE POWER OF

COMMUNICATION

We are driven by inspiration, and this month we talked to Zahraa Taher, the founder of FinMark Communications, to reinforce our belief that one should follow their passion to thrive.

66

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA Voices “Communication is the backbone for both the corporate and social world.” – Zahraa Taher OHLALA - Tell us a bit about you and your path to creating FinMark Communications. Zahraa Taher - I am a proud Bahraini who was educated in local schools and joined Bahrain University to study Civil Engineering. Since I was a kid, I was very active in many school activities, and I used to work as a volunteer every summer in different places. All the various opportunities I had helped me build many skills and experiences, especially when dealing with people and communicating. When I finished university, I had the chance to travel with my young brother to Pune, India, to continue my studies, and I can say this was where I felt I was transformed. It was a great experience. Over the years, I had lots of good mentors, one of them was John Wade, the Advisor to the Minister of Labour at the time; he suggested that I should explore the area of Public Relations (PR). This was not really a well-known career in the late '90s. I thought it was like a clearance officer, but when I read about it and joined a small PR agency, I knew that this was really my passion. It was something built into my system since I was a kid. So, I worked in the agency doing both PR and events management until the day I was approached by an investor to start an event management company in Bahrain, this was in 2002. I started the company with the support of one of my colleagues, built it from zero. In a few months, it became one of Bahrain's most active events management companies, then it started serving the region. I hired many young people, trained them, and worked on most of the large events in the Kingdom, such as the opening of the Bahrain Financial Harbour, the laying of the foundation stone for Tala and Marsa Island, the official opening of the Bahrain Chamber and many others. In 2009, I felt something was missing; I was not fully satisfied. This was when my entrepreneurial spirit was born. In 2010, my business partner and I established FinMark Communications with offices in Bahrain and London, and our journey of success started.

OHLALA - During this pandemic, what have been the most challenging moments you have been through? Zahraa - The pandemic actually helped us to discover new potential skills and ideas. FinMark Communications was the first company in Bahrain to hold a totally virtual regional event in March 2020, for 300 local and regional delegates, to celebrate the 50th Jubilee of Awal Women Society, which was a significant milestone for both the society and for Bahrain. Yes, it was challenging as we did not have the experience, but we came up with the idea, and we implemented it and learned a lot. The biggest challenge during the pandemic for all the businesses was to survive and, thank God, due to our strong foundation and the tremendous support from our government in Bahrain, we endured the most difficult times.

OHLALA - How does FinMark Communications create a differential for its clients? Zahraa - FinMark Communications offers international-standard services to our clients, with a local touch. My business partner, Laila Danesh, is an American who has worked in global markets and runs our London office; I have always worked in local and regional markets. In our field, it's essential to know how to communicate and understand what is really acceptable, or not, locally. Still, at the same time, it is also important to have international practices. Many international firms open offices in our region, but they really do not invest in developing the local talent, and many local companies have the talent but do not have the experience in working in international markets, so we complete each other, and we serve our clients in the best way possible.

OHLALA - You breathe the seriousness of the corporate world; what do you do to disconnect and relax? Zahraa - I have a great and supportive husband and family, and we do lots of activities together. I have friends from all stages of my life, primary school, high school, university, previous jobs, neighbours; I keep a close relationship with them and always arrange for group gatherings and adventures. Covid-19 did not stop any of that; however, we had more virtual meet-ups during the tough times. I have two girls; one is 15 years old, and the other is five years old, and I like to be involved in their lives as much as I can and do activities with them. I also love to travel, and I try to exercise as much as I can. I do not believe that work in the financial world should take over my life. Everything has its time, and to be a happy person, I should do my best to find the balance, even if it is very challenging.

OHLALA - How important is strong communication in the corporate world during crisis times? Zahraa - Communication is the backbone for both the corporate and social world. In April 2020, FinMark Communications held a very important webinar for the members of the American Chamber of Commerce and others, highlighting the importance of communicating during any crisis. We encouraged all our clients to start speaking to their different target audiences. When you do not communicate steadily and consistently, people begin to speculate. I should also highlight that over-communicating is also not advisable. There should be a clear strategy for all conversations. OHLALA - What do you think is the key ingredient to build a successful business? Zahraa - Patience, satisfaction, thrive to excel, and mostly not to think of how much you are making at the beginning, but how much you are investing in laying the proper foundation for your business. That will help you survive complex and challenging times.

Weaving the

Wind

As light and engaging as a fragrance, the Azzi & Osta autumn and winter 2021/2022 collection takes you to a world of haute couture in a bottle. The Azzi & Osta haute couture autumn and winter 2021/2022 inspiration started with a trip to the International Perfume Museum in Grasse, France. The vast universe of essences was the perfect place to imagine an ethereal and dreamy collection. At the museum, one of the things that caught the designers’ attention was the world map illustrating the origin of each flower, each plant extract – osmanthus from Japan, pine needles from Canada, sandalwood from India. The map draws attention to the different territories, climates, civilisations, and cultures that can intersect in a perfume’s composition – so many hands, so much work, so many communities, so many talents in one single flask. Georges Azzi and Assaad Osta saw in each perfume a choral masterpiece. The idea of this worldwide collaboration to obtain the most subtle, the most abstract product possible obsesses these two nature lovers. In the light of climate change, it also reassures them that if humanity can join hands to create beauty, it can also save the Earth. The designers wanted to materialise the lightness, volatility and pervasiveness of a fragrance. They also wanted to contribute to species protection, which resulted in the creation of feathers without feathers and fur without fur. Just as perfumery uses artifice to replace or refine rare essences, the designers pipe the organza and assemble it into moving ears of wheat on a ready-to-fly stole. A swirl of tulle, gauze and silk organza invaded the workshop, followed by a custom-made floral fabric, printed in 3D with verbena and patchouli. A new material is also introduced: raffia, a natural and renewable fibre inspired by the baskets and straw hats of the flower pickers. The palette is as soft as the heart notes that linger on the skin when the brighter tones have evaporated.

OUTSIDE IN 76

As we finally begin to anticipate a drop in temperatures, we can look forward to the open windows and garden evenings of late summer, a time when our indoor and outdoor living spaces become one. This month, we’re looking at ways to bring the outside in with style, while preparing for the chillier months ahead.

WEST ELM

Up The Wall Walls don’t have to be white! It’s a simple statement but one so many of us forget, particularly if living in a rental property. At the base level, go for a painted feature wall. For this scheme, anything from teal to a rich dark green would be perfect and, if you go for a plain painted wall, it’s the ideal space to showcase some gorgeous pale artwork. One big picture works really well but a large wall will also welcome a series of smaller prints or even 3D pieces grouped together. Step it up a notch and choose one of the many stunning wallpapers that are around at the moment such as Madagascar Leaves from Boråstapeter, Kejsarkrona by Arne Jacobsen or Protea by Emma J Shipley. With fantastical designs like these, it’s tempting to leave the wall space to do the talking but don’t be shy of placing selected pieces of furniture close by such as metallic or painted shelving to add a slightly industrial feel. Go all out and commission your own mural. This is not as hard as it sounds since local artists are often more than willing and very able to interpret

Going Green The first option when putting together a garden-style room is always plants and, if you’re blessed with high ceilings and a large living room, embrace the idea of ‘the more, the merrier’. You can get away with an abundance of flora in all shapes and sizes and, sticking with the time-worn clichés, it can also be a case of ‘the bigger, the better’. Think ceiling-skimming Monstera in interesting pots, ignore the usual brass or plain ceramics in favour of something different, perhaps a hessian bag or aged copper-look. You don’t have to forsake the giants if your room is smaller, simply pick one large plant and then accompany it with some smaller companions. And, if you’re not keen on the hassle of caring for houseplants, you can still achieve this look using some of the very realistic synthetic options that are now widely available.

your ideas, from a simple floral pattern to a full-on statement piece. The result will be stunning and truly exclusive. Or, if you really want to bring the garden into your living space, look into constructing a living wall. You’ll spot these in restaurants and hotels but there is no reason they can’t be adapted for an individual space. Warm It Up As the months progress, we’re likely to feel the need to warm the atmosphere at little. It’s a great excuse to shop for luxurious throws and pillows in eco-friendly wool, angora, cashmere, heavyweight crushed velvet or even faux fur. If your furniture has a bold pattern, it’s best to keep these plain and classy and choose colours to either tone with or contrast to your feature wall. However, if your main furniture pieces are plain then you have the choice of either simple block colours or patterned options. You can either drape them over the back of the furniture or fold neatly in a welcoming pile in a basket but whatever you choose, remember these are accent pieces, don’t let them takeover the room. The Fun Factor Yes, we appreciate the ethos of high design and recognise its appropriateness in formal settings. But, for a family home, there’s always room for a little fun. Try one of these fabulous hippos and you’ll be adding a unique piece to your home (each one is different) at the same time as doing some good. They’re made from discarded flip-flops by Ocean Sole, a Kenyan social enterprise project that removes trash from the oceans and coastlines and makes art to support marine conservation, while creating employment. This scheme also lends itself to a touch of steampunk sassiness, so why not add some industrial-inspired pure cheek. This lamp is a handmade, upcycled creation but there are plenty of options available from lighting and design stores. www.ohlala-magazine.com

The OHLALA team was treated to an Italian journey of the palate at the revamped Mondo, Taste of Italy restaurant at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa.

78

www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHIC Eats

G

ood food and good company are two of life’s simplest yet greatest pleasures. The company was guaranteed and knowing the menu in question was going to be Italian, we had no doubt it would be an unforgettable evening at Mondo. The kitchen is orchestrated by Chef Raffaele, originally from Sicily, who calls on his Italian roots to provide all the authenticity an Italian restaurant needs. He is also responsible for choosing the ingredients that are used in his kitchen, from the organic olive oil, from a small Italian farm where he personally knows the owner, to the original imported tomato sauce and flour used in his dishes. Besides having Chef Raffaele to make sure everything is genuinely Italian; Mondo has received a complete revamp and is now expressing a modern yet cosy and family-driven atmosphere. The star of the place – a Neapolitan brick oven that travelled all the way from Italy to make sure we can get a legitimate Pizza Napolitana in Bahrain. We arrived at the restaurant at the end of a busy week and were happy to be pampered by Mondo’s friendly team. The enhanced grape drink served to us was organic and vegan from an Italian vineyard in Puglia. An enjoyable blend that was perfect to pair with our food choices. As all memorable meals start, we had a selection of appetisers that are a must-have in every Italian menu. The Burrata Pugliese was a buttery and creamy ball of mozzarella also from Puglia, accompanied by charred bell peppers, olives and delectable eggplant and basil sauces that added a hint of intense flavour to this oozy, melting cheese perfection. The Carpaccio of Angus Beef melted in the mouth and was made of marinated rare Angus beef, rocket leaves, capers, Parmigiano shavings and a touch of precious truffle oil, which added a distinct flavour. The Octopus Salad was composed of thin octopus slices, green leaves, crispy capers, cherry tomatoes, olives, orange, EVOO (when olives are crushed into a pulp without any chemicals) and lemon dressing. And to please the plantbased diner, the Carpaccio di Verdure made with seasonal, marinated and fireroasted vegetable carpaccio that had an explosion of flavour, highlighting each vegetable in the composition.

CHIC Eats It was time to try the most popular dish in Italian cuisine – pizza! And we couldn’t be more excited to appraise the creations of Chef Raffaele and his Neapolitan brick oven. We tried three different flavours. Margherita, with its simplicity and spot-on mix of tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and basil. Our favourite of the evening, which had one of my dining companions gasping with delight – Tartufo, made with buffalo mozzarella, Parmigiano, generous fresh shavings of black truffle and Porcini mushrooms straight from the Italian grounds. And Pescatora, a tomato pizza with calamari, mussels and prawns with a touch of EVOO and oregano – a must-order for seafood lovers. The dough is exactly what you expect when having pizza as a delicacy; it has that charred flavour from the oven, perfect puffed-up crust and precise texture with not a hint of doughiness. In the pasta feast, the consistency of the pasta was at the excellency level, not too al dente and far from being too soft. They were just perfect! And we had a good selection to taste. The variety went from simple yet extremely well-seasoned Penne Arrabbiata to Linguine Vongole prepared with clams, EVOO, chilli, cherry tomato, and garlic. Highly recommended by my dining companion, the Truffle & Ricotta Ravioli was definitely a winner. The thin, firm, and well-structured pasta packets were filled with ricotta and fresh black truffle prepared in butter sauce and crispy sage. A dish that got an ovation from the entire table and that you must try when dining at Mondo. Of course, we cannot forget the Risotto ai Porcini which was just the comfort food we were expecting. Beautifully creamy rice richly infused with plenty of parmesan and a generous serving of Porcini mushrooms. Absolute bliss.

The food kept coming, and we kept enjoying every bite. The Carne (meat) and Pesce (fish) arrived, first the Tagliata Prime Rib-Eye with blistered tomatoes and chimichurri sauce that did justice to this fine cut, starring the meat’s succulence. The beef was followed by the Island Style Seabass, giving centre stage to an oven-baked fish with ultra-thin slices of herby potatoes, Heirloom tomato and an earthy and minty touch of thyme – a very traditional dish that was extremely tasty and also beautiful to look at. To finalise this banquet, we delved into the dessert selection. The famous Cannoli originated in the Sicilian city of Palermo (with a Sicilian chef, it was a must-try), was crispy and filled with sweetened ricotta cheese, candied lemon and orange, pistachio and chocolate drops. A mandatory pick for Cannoli enthusiasts. At Mondo, the vanilla panna cotta is called Espressisimo. Yes, it is made with rich Italian coffee in the form of espresso jelly and coffee granita. Even those that don’t particularly like coffee will fall for it as evidenced by one of our party who found the unadorned panna cotta to be a delightfully creamy treat. And last but not least, everyone’s favourite, the Semifreddo al Limone, a semi-frozen lemon cake, with almond and pistachio crust, summer berries and berry coulis, was the perfect combination of sweet and sharp, an interesting texture combination and a gift to our palates. We also highly recommend trying the cucumber and mint granita that gives you a wonderful and refreshing sensation after satisfying your cravings for an authentic Italian Osteria experience. The food at Mondo was the exact delight you look for when dining out; now, it is on you to find the best company to fully enjoy some of life’s simplest pleasures. Who said that clean eating has to be boring? Learn with Victoria Kruse how to eat well while thinking sustainably.

V

ictoria Kruse is a sustainability and wellness mentor. She was born and raised in a small town in New Zealand, surrounded by nature and rich biodiversity, and has always eaten homegrown and seasonal food. She is a chameleon with many talents and much knowledge to share. She worked in numerous fields before reinventing herself through learning and experience to become a mentor for sustainability and wellness in the resort industry. Falling in love with a resort general manager led her on an adventure through Asia Pacific’s top hotels and to her current dream destination, The Maldives, where she has had free rein to develop her current resort’s holistic approach to wellness and sustainability. As the creator of the ‘Wellness Your Way’ initiative, Victoria has developed recipes and shared with guests her philosophy of eating well for health and a more sustainable planet Earth. Sustainability and the importance of taking care of our planet have taken on a more significant role during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it is an important topic for discussion. Victoria grew up in a small town and had a childhood that included homegrown vegetables, freshly caught fish, and farm bought eggs and meat. “My family were early proponents of sustainability initiatives, well before sustainability was a buzzword,” she says. In her household, her mother used to save plastic wraps to reuse, and her father repaired anything that was broken in the house, and she adds: “fate forgive us if we ever ripped gift wrap on presents, we had to remove the tape carefully so it could be used again.” All these details from Victoria’s childhood helped to form her ethos as an adult; work hard, look after things, fix problems, nurture nature and care are some of her tenets. Transmuting these ideas to her life now, she shares some attitudes we can implement as responsible custodians of the planet we live on. “As a resort, we have taken some conscious decisions that we believe are small but significant steps forward,” she says. “We chose to select our suppliers based upon factors including how they treat their animals, from incubation to despatching.” It is essential for them that the food they serve does not contain hormones or antibiotics. And also, that the animals that are consumed lived as nature intended, eating the foods that are natural to them, such as pasture grass for sheep and cows. The fish are caught in a way that means stocks are sustainable for years to come and that the local population, that relies upon them for their diet, also has access to sustainable stocks. “We also recently released what we believe to be the most ethical burger available in the Maldives. It falls into my personal eating lifestyle - ethical, local, gluten-free, homemade and keto,” says Victoria. 82

THE 2021

MASERATI LEVANTE MASERATI STRENGTHEN THEIR STANDING IN THE LUXURY SUV SEGMENT WITH THEIR LATEST GENERATION LEVANTE. 86

M

aserati have been in the premium car manufacturing business for over a century now and show no signs of slowing down. Having entered into the luxury SUV segment only a few years ago with the Levante, this prestigious brand has ensured that every new generation model is more impressive than its predecessor. We at OHLALA were delighted when offered the rare opportunity to test drive the new Maserati Levante, compliments of the proficient team at Maserati Bahrain, a test drive we are sure to remember for many years to come. The moment we laid eyes on the new Levante Gransport; we were in love. This new generation model is a beauty to behold, and we took our time slowly inspecting the vehicle, taking in every magnificent detail. At the front end, the imposing grille, inspired by the Alfieri concept, is accentuated by the flow of the front wings which in turn emphasise the shape of the engine compartment lid. The powerful Full LED headlights converge with the Trident symbol sitting at the centre of the grille like a precious jewel. From the flanks, the Levante’s feline-inspired headlights point the eyes towards the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, seamlessly following the shape of the side windows. The muscular rear shoulders give this model its distinctive Italian style, whilst the profile of the SUV is defined by a swaged line running the full length of the vehicle. This line veers away from the signature side vents at the front and fades over the rear wing, defining its muscular shape and emphasising its underlying power. The profile view is completed with sporty 21-inch, light alloy wheels, complete with Trident design neatly integrated into the spokes. At the rear, the car is finished off perfectly with its stylish roof spoiler and dual twin exhaust system.

Slipping inside the interior, we were greeted by the Levante’s breathtaking Italian flair as well as the effective automatic four zone climate control. Feeling more like a first-class lounge than a car’s cabin, all the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout the vehicle are of a premium standard and no expense has been spared in the creation of this deluxe environment. The comfortable heated and ventilated leather front sport seats, with wraparound shape for extra support, are multi-adjustable and fitted as standard in the new generation. The Levante range is now equipped with Maserati’s sport steering wheel that enhances the model’s sportiness and when coupled with the brushed steel sport pedals, recreates a sports GT setting. Thanks to the long wheelbase, there is a generous amount of space on offer throughout the vehicle with plenty of leg, shoulder and head room for all occupants. The luggage compartment has been designed to hold up to 580 litres, a total drastically increased with the rear seats folded down. There is also a 12V power socket in the luggage area, along with three more sockets inside the cabin. To ensure you, as the buyer, can express your own style, Maserati are providing a total of 28 interior colour combinations as well as contrast stitching options on the seats and headrests to select from.

The Maserati Levante boasts a highly intuitive interface unit, namely the Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC Plus). The tastefully designed dashboard and centre console have been created to perfectly house the 8.4-inch capacitive touchscreen, the cluster of drive mode buttons as well as the ergonomically designed rotary control and air suspension switch. The instrument panel is reminiscent of the layout in the Ghibli and Quattroporte models, complemented by ambient white lighting. Stunning aluminium and chrome finishes underscore the classy nature of this car, whilst the Harman Kardon Audio System with eight speakers provides the soundtrack for all your luxurious adventures. The new Levante is powered by a three-litre, twin turbo petrol engine that delivers 350hp and 500Nm of torque from 1,750 up to 4,750rpm. This combined with a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox, translates to an acceleration of 0-100km/h in around 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 251km/h. Everything about this vehicle felt fast and efficient. The traction control, stateof-the-art air suspension system, superior cornering ability as well as the uber responsive braking system, place you in firm control of the driving experience. A host of safety, security and assistance features are fitted as standard to always ensure the wellbeing of you and your loved ones. We at OHLALA cannot sing the praises of this outstanding premium SUV loudly enough.

“Feeling more like a first-class lounge than a car’s cabin, all of the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout the vehicle are of a premium standard and no expense has been spared in the creation of this deluxe environment.”

MISS Ohlala

THE POWER OF CLOTHING HOW DOES YOUR MOOD INFLUENCE YOUR OUTFIT, AND HOW CAN YOUR CHOICE HELP YOU FEEL BETTER?

ALYSSA STROHMANN ON UNSPLASH

Even if you are not aware, your mood directly influences your choices when getting dressed in the morning. A study conducted by Professor Karen Pine, from the University of Hertfordshire in the UK, found that what a woman chooses to wear depends heavily on her emotional state. They also learned that the item most wear when depressed is a pair of jeans. One hundred women were asked what they wore when feeling down, and more than half of them gave this answer. Women also revealed that they would be 10 times more likely to wear a favourite dress when happy (62%) than when not feeling as joyful (6%). The psychologists concluded that the strong link between clothing and mood state suggests that we should get dressed in clothes that we associate with happiness, even when feeling low. It is a way to trick your brain and uplift your mood. “This finding shows that clothing doesn’t just influence others; it reflects and influences the wearer’s mood too. Many of the women in this study felt they could alter their mood by changing what they wore. This finding demonstrates the psychological power of clothing and how the right choices could impact a person’s state of happiness,” says Professor Pine. This means that even if you are not feeling your best, you can count on your wardrobe to help you feel happier or present yourself to others in a more upbeat state — just as a smile does.
